Not great.......2005-08-20
I'm always a fan of Exalted's setting, and Waggoner's pacing is solid. But the writing is lousy. The dialogue reads like something out of my 6th grade D&D game and the plot is kinda goofy. A good editor would have improved this book enormously.

Book Description
Catherine Sanderson seems to have it all: a fulfilling career helping immigrant women find jobs, a lovely home, and a beautiful, intelligent daughter on her way to Smith College. What Catherine doesn’t have: a father for her child– and she’s spent many years dodging her daughter’s questions about it. Now Phoebe is old enough to start poking around on her own. It doesn’t help matters that the mystery man, B.J. Johnson–the only man Catherine has ever loved–doesn’t even know about Phoebe. He’s been living in Africa.
Now B.J., a renowned newspaper correspondent, is back in town and needs Catherine’s help cracking a story about a female slavery ring operating right on the streets of Atlanta. Catherine is eager to help B.J., despite her heart’s uncertainty over meeting him again after so long, and confessing the truth to him–and their daughter.
Meanwhile, Catherine’s hands are more than full since she’s taken on a new client. Atlanta’s legendary Miss Mandeville–a housekeeper turned tycoon–is eager to have Catherine staff her housekeeping business. But why are the steely Miss Mandeville and her all-too-slick sidekick Sam so interested in Catherine’s connection to B.J.? What transpires is an explosive story that takes her world–not to mention the entire city of Atlanta–by storm.
From the New York Times bestselling author of What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day . . . comes another fast-paced and emotionally resonant novel, by turns warm and funny, serious and raw. Pearl Cleage’s ability to create a gripping story centered on strong, spirited black women and the important issues they face remains unrivaled.

Good Story.......2007-03-04
I have several of Pearl Cleage books, but have yet to read any of them until one of my book clubs pick this one for our read. I didn't finish it before our meeting, but I finished it afterward and it was a very good book. A little slow but good. I will have to read my other books by Ms. Cleage.
Sister Hood overcomes all.......2007-01-29
I enjoyed this fast paced, easy to read novel with characters I felt that I really knew. I was ready to drive around the city to find these locations mentioned since the book made them so real to me. I love a good plot and this one fooled me all the way!
Babylon Sisters: A Love Story Without All The Mush.......2007-01-26
Pearl Cleage does it again! She successfully puts into words those emotions that are all too common to most of us. Surprisingly, she is able to speak not only for the women characters, but for the men as well. Babylon Sisters is a love story without all of the mush. What I liked most about this book was the complexity of the characters - they have layers and the more you find out about each one, the more believable the character becomes. This book would make a great birthday gift to a friend. If you're a fast reader you can finish this in one weekend.
a good story, well-told.......2007-01-10
I loved this book, on many levels!
I'm a white woman in the Midwest, whose reading tends towards mysteries and gory thrillers, or travel- or food-related fiction and non-fiction. I was looking for something "different" and "light" to read over Christmas, so a book by a black woman about black characters in Atlanta, dealing with "women's issues" and immigration sounded interesting. (See the editorial reviews for story line.)
The mystery thread was engaging (even without anyone getting murdered!) as were the minor plot lines. I was afraid the "single-mother" and "romance" themes might be too sappy, but they weren't.
The glimpse of 'black culture' was interesting and "natural". I liked the characters; you'd be lucky to have them in your circle of friends. It was refreshing to see well-educated, affluent black characters.
There were references to books I've heard of but not read, so I'm now interested in seeking them out (e.g., the one that plays in role in the storyline).
The author's style was so enjoyable. Her turns of phrase were pleasing and the pacing of the chapters made it hard to put down. This was a good story, well-told. I plan to read more of her books.
Outstanding, Something out of the Ordinary .......2006-04-22
This is my first Pearl Cleage book and it won't be my last. The story doesn't have the typical urban fiction storyline its got a lot more to offer. The end is far from predictable. The chapters are short and the book is a quick and easy read. Cleage kept things moving from the beginning to the end. The book offers everything romance, drama, and a good discussion of immigration politics. If you want something out of the ordinary read this book.
The book is about Catherine Sanderson an advocate for immigrant woman and her daughter seventeen year old daughter Phoebe. The relationship between Phoebe and her mother grows rocky when she fails to reveal who her father is. But the main story line is about Catherine and her new job for Miss Mandeville. While working for Miss Mandevile Catherine learns about a female slave ring. Things quickly heat up as she uncovers more and more about immigrant women being sold and used as prostitutes.

Book Description
Paul Di Filippo is one of Science Fiction's finest short story writers, wild, witty, exuberantly imaginative; Babylon Sisters and Other Posthumans is a generous showcase of his strange, transformative, and powerful Hard SF visions. The fourteen stories collected here are glimpses into the most fantastic possibilities of human evolution-biological, social, and cultural. From a New York split into warring walled enclaves, to the destiny of our species as a strain of virus, to an Africa made over by nanotech messiahs, to a future Earth protected by half-alien angels, to wars of liberation from what we have always so tragically been: these are only some of the awe-inspiring transitions to be found in Babylon Sisters. Read here of rebellion by books against their librarian, of cosmic destiny remade by stellar lunatics, of disorienting ventures beyond the boundaries of the human; discover here the perverse and terrible dangers of the age of posthumanity.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully Inventive SF.......2006-06-18
This book was a real pleasure from start to finish. Di Filippo is an incredibly versatile writer. The end result blends genetic engineering, mind control, social organization, and erotics -- really, it's impossible to describe, but it's always incredibly entertaining. You don't know what to expect from one page to the next. I've read a lot of SF and fantasy, and would definitely give this work my highest recommendation!

Truly original.......2007-03-10
I had purchased this book many years ago and was on here checking to see if it was still in print. I have a hard time believing that the one reviewer on here actually read it. This book shows how to experience our spirit by moving from our physical (and hence emotional and spiritual) center. The Chinese call it the Dan Tien while the Japanese call it the Hara. I find nothing New Agey about this title. It is chock full of ancient quotes and movement routines. I am unaware of a book on this subject that so fully compiles this type of info, has a solid, practical tone, and is mystical at the same time. This is a workbook as well as the best movement meditation book I have ever read. Did I mention that it is fun, too?
mix and match ideas.......2000-12-14
A reference book for highschool .Overpriced at $41. original price $14. Please check the price before buying it. Meditation in action.I see yoga postures with added footsteps, backed by chakras with psychological inputs. Nothing original. Same story all over.
Excellent source for movement meditation!.......1997-06-04
The author has really compiled a wonderful collection of suggestions for movement meditations that have really helped me understand that meditation can be an "in body" experience. I found myself really appreciating my own body and the deep connection to spirit that these experiences lend

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous recipes and marvelous presentation!.......2000-06-26
This book is even good reading... its humorous little anecdotes, sprinkled among the recipes and photos, reveal little-known facts and add even more vibrancy to the tone of the book. All of the recipes that I have tried (about 15) have turned out beautifully, with my guests begging to know from what restaurant I bought the take-out! Greek with Gusto has de-mystified what was to me formerly a very foreign cuisine.
Great authentic flavors and lower-fat healthy eating........1999-08-20
These recipes are very usable and the flavors are wonderful. I love Greek food and now I can make it at home. I really appreciate the lower-fat focus that these recipes have. Greek friends rave about this cookbook -- they're the true experts and it has passed their taste tests. The food photos are clear and very appealing. The illustrations and commentaries also make it terrific to read.
Fantastic, easy-to-follow recipes.......1999-03-30
I have made several recipes in this book and have had complete success with all of them. I love the illustrations and the step-by-step instructions. Anyone can make delicious Greek food with this book!

The Bizarre History of Isaac Merritt Singer and His Sewing Machine.......2007-08-11
A nice Biography of Isaac Singer, his Sewing Machine, and the Company that made him wealthly.
When Henry Ford was in diapers, Isaac Singer was starting the company that revolutionized not just sewing, but the retailing of manufactured products.
Singer created the first installment purchase plan, and created the first nationwide distribution system via traveling salesmand, and stores - in virtually every town in America. This book tells how it happened. From the pre-civil war inventions, through the vicious patent battles of the 1880s, the book lays out Singer's role in the manufacturing of the sewing machine. Singer's revolution allowed women to add hours of time to their lives, distilled from the former drudgery of hand sewing of clothing - and all household linens... Women instantly recognized the freedom inherent in the use of the machine, and Singer made it accessible by inventing the installment plan. For pennies a month, a woman could purchase what was then, and incredibly expensive item (The first machines sold for $100.00 and more - ). By the 1890's, over a million machine had been sold. Shortly after the turn of the century, Singer built the tallest building in the world (at the site of the World Trade Center), but his private pecadillos made him pariah in New York, where he had many mistresses, children, and, even more than one wife at one time! He moved to Paris to avoid the publicity, and died overweight, and still a reprobate!
An interesting, and little known (today) history of a company that had a huge impact on the history of this country - and especially the lives and development of women!
It's not the best written work, but a good quick read, and interesting!

Book Description
The true role of this splendid, tragic figure. Cagliostro, was a Mystic, Mason and adept at magic, alchemy, and psychic healing. He died at the hands of the Holy Roman Inquisition. Although much has been written against Cagliostro, Trowbridge, through his meticulous researching, comes up with an all together different picture. "The object of this book is not so much an attempt to vindicate Cagliostro as to correct and revise, if possible, what I believe to be a false judgment of history." Contents: The Power of Prejudice; Giuseppe Balsamo; Cagliostro in London; Eighteenth Century Occultism; Masked and Unmasked; The Conquest of the Cardinal; Cagliostro in Paris; The Diamond Necklace Affair; Cagliostro Returns to London; "Nature's Unfortunate Child.
Customer Reviews:
A Tragic Life Maligned by the Media and Dishonorable People.......2004-05-14
According to Trowbridge's investigations of Cagliostro, he was a compassionate man with a gift of healing. He never charged for his medicinal cures and treated the poor as well as the rich. He also had great psychic abilites and was a staunch supporter of Freedom and Freemasonery during the time of revolution in Europe. I couldn't help but be depressed when I read how horrible the media and the press of his day were to him. It reminded me of the times we are living in now...how our media and press have just lost all sense of reasoning and are scandalous and malicious in their barbs and words. Just like in Cagliostro's time when people were fighting for freedom the press crucified him... I found similarity in our "current war on terror" and the unmerciful attacks from the media on America's struggle in protecting our freedoms. Over and over again Trowbridge sites examples where Cagliostro's character was attacked, lied about and maligned....history just keeps repeating itself. This book even made me squirm with thoughts about my own book I have written and the fact that someday somewhere some media person with the power of the pen or televsion might set out to destroy or discredit my reputation and teachings. If nothing else this book reminds me how little humanity has changed. This book documents the injustices and deliberate persecutions of a good and gentle man and his wife. In the end it utterly destroyed them. Trowbridge also reveals to the reader the wonderful and amazing abilites this man had as he was often compared to the Comte de Saint Germain. Besides a new historical account of the man it is a revealing look into human nature during the 1700s when so many were fighting and striving for independence and freedom.
A controversial caracther under the spotlight of History.......2003-08-17
For many years Cagliostro has been confused with Joseph Balsamo, a notorious Sicilian scoundrel. His life has been disparaged in such a blemishing way that it has been hard to find out what is true and what are his enemy's reviles. Through the spotlight of Trowbridge one is able to shed some lights on this uncommon character. He is no saint, but he is far from being the devilish creature his enemies named him. A book worth reading!
A controversial figure in the spotlight.......2003-08-16
Most of the books that were written about Cagliostro labels him as the king of liars and a scoundrel. Due to several facts in his life, Cagliostro has been confounded with Joseph Balsamo, a Sicilian rascal. Trowbridge shows us in his fine book that its impossible that Cagliostro could have ever been Balsamo, even though he is quite straighforward to paint us a caracther that sometimes is brilliant and other times is a pathetic human being. It's worthwhile reading about such controversial figure brought to us by Trowbridge's spotlight.
Valuable to any Rosicrucian or Freemason.......1998-09-03
This book covers some of the important achievements and events in this contraversial person's life. Some believe him to be an incarnation of St. Germain. Others condemn him as a vile trickster. Read the facts and decide for yourself.
