In the annals of great literature, Malta's one potential claim to fame is that it might have been the location of Calypso's island in The Odyssey; apart from that, this tiny, windswept island midway between Italy and Libya makes itself scarce on the fictional front. But Nicholas Rinaldi brings it front and center in his remarkable second novel, The Jukebox Queen of Malta, and if his descriptions of the place leave you cold, his characters won't. Set during the early years of World War II, the story begins with the arrival of American soldier Rocco Raven, late of Brooklyn, during an air raid. While running from an attacking Messerschmitt, Raven is rescued by Jack Fingerly, a shadowy character who may--or may not--be an Army intelligence officer. To Rocco, a car mechanic in civilian life with a taste for Melville, Nietzsche, and Edgar Allan Poe, nothing about Malta makes sense--except his feelings for Melita Azzard, the eponymous heroine whom he meets during one of the incessant bombings that punctuate life on the island:
There was a freedom to the way she moved, a confidence and self-assurance. She paused to look up as yet another Stuka swept by, this one trailing a plume of black smoke from its fuselage. Then she looked back, over her shoulder, and saw him coming along half a block behind her.
Though the romance between Rocco and Melita is at the heart of the novel, Rinaldi has more than wartime love on his mind. His island is a marvelous place populated by unhappy pilots who get promoted every time they're shot down; repairmen who have turned jukeboxes into a wartime industry; old men who dream of a "Greater Malta" composed of an annexed Italy ("Sicily we don't want, it's too full of thugs and mafiosi. Rome we give to the pope, but the rest of Italy is ours"); and ordinary people who carry on their quotidian lives in the midst of not-so-quotidian carnage. There's a dreamy, disturbing quality to this novel, as though Catch-22 and Alice in Wonderland met and married. Rocco blames it on the island: "Malta was doing this--everything shifting, turning, uncertain"; the reader, however, knows better. This jewel of a novel owes everything to Nicholas Rinaldi's tilted imagination and considerable prose talents. --Alix Wilber

Book Description

The Jukebox Queen of Malta is an exquisite and enchanting novel of love and war set on an island perilously balanced between what is real and what is not. It's 1942 and Rocco Raven, an intrepid auto mechanic turned corporal from Brooklyn, has arrived in Malta, a Mediterranean island of Neolithic caves, Copper Age temples, and fortresses. The island is under siege, full of smoke and rubble, caught in the magnesium glare of German and Italian bombs. But nothing is as it seems on Malta. Rocco's living quarters are a brothel; his commanding officer has a genius for turning the war's misfortunes into personal profit; and the Maltese people, astonishingly, testify to the resiliency of the human spirit. When Rocco meets the beautiful and ethereal Melita, who delivers the jukeboxes her cousin builds out of shattered debris, they are drawn to each other by an immediate passion. And, it is their full-blown affair that at once liberates and imprisons Rocco on the island. In this mesmerizing novel, music and bombs, war and romance, the jukebox and the gun exist in arresting counterpoint in a story that is a profound and deeply moving exploration of the redemptive powers of love.

life and love during wartime in malta set during the germain bombardments of the island country. a good read

3 out of 5 stars Humor in wartime........2002-06-21

This was a light-hearted humorous story about Malta during the Second World War. Nicholas Rinaldi successfully moved the reader through a number of quirky characters whose motivations were shaped by the uncertainty of the war. There was an addicted gambler, a clumsy pilot and of course Melita the heroine - a spontaneous beautiful Maltese who captured Rocco Raven's heart - the stranded American soldier whose devotion to duty became an obstacle to his relationship with the heroine.
The book is funny and it brought out the chaos and the craziness of war amidst the resilience and the resourcefulness of the Maltese, the expatriate business people and the military personnel that defended the island.
The writer gave the reader an excellent description of nightlife in Malta, which was incomplete without good food and various American wartime music. And one got an overview aerial combat in Rinaldi's depiction of warplanes that constantly pounded the island with bombs.
The writer, I believe, tried too hard to mimic Catch-22 by the late Joseph Heller, who incidentally wrote praises that the publisher placed on the jacket of the hardcover. While I would put Catch-22 and Rinaldi's book in same class, I would place The Jukebox Queen of Malta a couple of rungs below Heller's masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars The madness of love amidst the madness of war........2002-02-04

Melita Azzard is a forthright Maltese girl who delivers and services jukeboxes. Her resourceful cousin Zammit collects the makings of these jukeboxes from the rubble of bombed out buildings in 1942 Mslta and transforms them into objects of beauty and artistry.

That is what Nicholas Rinaldi has done with this novel. It is a beautiful tapestry constructed from the fragments and debris left over by engagements of war and love.

Rocco Raven, a young, impressionable Brooklynite inserted into the chaos of Malta during an air raid in 1942 feels as if he has fallen through the looking glass instead. He cannot find his superior officer, instead falling under the influence of a very shady captain in the American Army intelligence corps. They, along with one other intelligence officer, constitute the total American presence on Malta. The other main military presence is that of a contingent of British pilots trapped in a very Catch 22-esque sort of duty—each time one of them gets shot down and survives-he gets promoted. Rocco sees-and falls for—Melita, and is swept into the chaos of life on Malta during the war helping out with the jukebox business when not trying to do his intelligence work and/or trying not to get sucked into the various shady deals his superior officer is embroiled in.

Rinaldi does a masterful job of truly developing the characters, the scene, the sense of unreality that was wartime Malta. The love story is genuine and moving. The wartime shenanigans of Rocco’s superior are just zany and dangerous enough to capture our imaginations. And the chaos, tragedy and farce that is modern warfare is in full evidence throughout the novel.

This is a truly great book. Read it.

4 out of 5 stars Authentic and absorbing.......2002-01-01

The atmosphere created by Nicholas Rinaldi in this novel is authentic: this was Malta in WWII, when there was constant bombing, little food and a common desperation that led to individual acts of heroism, ingenuity, folly. Having lived in Malta for 27 years, the scenes, characters and dilemmas created by Rinaldi reawakened in me a kind of nostalgia; reminded me of the steadfast, ingenious Maltese: their seige mentality, pious irreverence and black humour. The writing is crisp, immediate and evocative, with passing references to literary and historical stuff, emotional and psychological stuff and religious and philosophical stuff: but it is never heavy, overbearing or dry. This is an engaging novel that entertains while it makes the reader wonder (because it is obvious the history on which it is based is real) how the human spirit experiences, endures and lives to overcome. There are insurmountable obstacles facing the characters in this books. There are classical juxtapositions of characters and scenes. There are locations that suddenly take on personalities of their own, taking charge and dominating the story. That's Malta for you: its history, presence, size and improbabilities arrest the heart. In this case, it made an author stay and write on. I found it hard to put down, and will find it hard to forget.

4 out of 5 stars marvelous!!!.......2001-08-11

I thoroughly enjoyed this story...a wonderful blend of drama, tragedy, romance and humor...the kind of story I love. Sometimes I didn't know whether to laugh or cry! The love story between Rocco and Melita was "real" - based on war-time passion and uncertainty - a reaching out for love and hope in the midst of devastation and sorrow. My heart went out to them. The wonderfully colorful characters were interesting and fun...the main and sub-plots were intriguing and kept me page-turning late into the night. I was sorry to have it end.

5 out of 5 stars Dredd + Zombies = One drokking hell of a ride........2006-09-01

Though I agree with the other reviewer here that Judgement Day isn't the best introduction to the world of Judge Dredd, I have to say that this book is one of the most entertaining story arcs of Dredd (from 2000AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine, the story ran in both issues simultaneously) ever.
In a nutshell, it's the judges of Mega-City One and the other Mega-Cities worldwide trying to get through a zombie apocalypse. Pretty basic premise, really. Oh, it has all the trappings of what we've come to expect from the dark, gritty yet satirical future of Judge Dredd, make no mistake. Garth Ennis crafts a fun and exciting story that you won't soon forget, citizen!
(and the art is excellent, too, let's not forget that)
If that's not enough, we are treated with a guest appearance from everyone's favourite Strontium Dog, Johnny Alpha.
So, what are you waiting for? Give this trade paper back a read. If you've never read Dredd or 2000AD before, there's no need (What am I saying? Go read 2000AD!). Anyone can jump in to this book and have a blast from beginning to end.

3 out of 5 stars Not a Good Introduction to Dredd.......2006-06-11

As a lifelong Dredd fan I have to say that this graphic novel, although reasonable, is not the best introduction for those who may be less familiar with Dredd. I urge people to get both 'Judge Dredd: The Pit' and 'Judge Dredd: America' before moving on to other Judge Dredd titles. Both of these titles are available through Amazon.com, although only from 3rd party vendors. Oh, and for goodness sake forget that you ever saw Stallone's Judge Dredd movie. The real Dredd has a lot more depth, and there's an important message in the Dredd stories that has relevance to our modern life, especially in the wake of September 11 2001.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth plowing through the slow beginning!.......2005-05-02

I almost put this book down after the first few chapters. I found the character of Anna to be unbearable at first (I know she's supposed to be this way, but I found it difficult to read about her) She has absolutely no conscience or feelings. She lies and steals. She only cares about herself and as her brother Rowan says, "It's as if she's not human."

But I read on, regardless of not liking Anna. Thank goodness I did, because this book would become an absolute page turner! I must admit that I like to "cheat" and peek ahead to see how the book ends. Even with doing this, I still found the end to be an absolute surprise, as the plot is so full of wonderful twists and turns. After reading the final chapter, the postlude, I was aghast at how the story turned out. All I can say is wow!

It turns out Rowan was correct. Anna isn't quite human at all. Living in a futuristic society (the 1990s!), Anna and Rowan cannot leave their home without consulting with a computer that allows them to go ahead. One day, in an act of rebellion, Rowan goes to a department store without consulting with the computer. He sees Anna there, but when confronted by Rowan, this girl does not know Rowan. Is it possible that Anna has a twin? What is going on?

As a librarian trainee, I am looking forward to booktalking this book and I sure hope that other people check it out. It's well worth it!

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome.......2002-11-14

I read this book for the first time about 17 years ago. It actually began my love of reading. It is an incredible novel about the future & the dangers of cloning. Anna is such a real & believeable character. Her brother knows there is something different about her & does not like her. Once he begins to see her clones in public places, he rallies to her side & tries to help her discover why it is that she is so different. Great story & definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I loved This Book.......1999-01-31

I am fifteen now and read this book when I was about 11 or 12. I thought the book was great and still own it. The plot was very interseting and I would recomend it to any young readers, especially those who like science fiction.

5 out of 5 stars VERY ENTERTAINING AND ENJOYABLE.......1998-05-26

This book is written for a juvenile audience, I feel. I read it first when I was about 12 and again several more times throughout my teen years. I love this book. It is about Anna, a misfit within her own family. She is not like them and does not resemble any of them. She lives in a futuristic society where everyone has to type into computers (they are everywhere: malls, libraries, in every home), where they are going before they go there. The computer will then give them permission to go. One particular day, Anna decides to go somewhere with her brother and does not type it in. Her and her brother get separated in the store and he searches for her at length. He walks up to a young woman that looks identical to his sister and mistakes her. Anna finds out about this and there is a confrontation with the parents. Apparently, the mother willingly allowed scientists to inject a cloned egg into her of a famous person (I believe another scientist). This is why she does not look like her family. When the authorities find out that she did not type in where she was going and that she did indeed come into contact with one of her clones, they encourage her to go to a special hopsital/hotel of sorts. Alot of weird instances happen here. But I won't give it away. I highly recommend this to young adults, and even some older ones that would enjoy easy reading and thought provoking fiction. I LOVE this book!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting View of Cloning.......1998-02-02

Anna to the Infinite Power is a fairly interesting story. Anna is but one of many clones of a scientist, created to complete her work. A nice story albeit a bit unscientific (a clone remebering the originals death?!?) A nice plot with interesting characters, and not an over emphasis on the scientific and ethical questions on cloning. Written way before this entire debate too.

11 year-old Anna Hart, human calculator, seems to have some problems dealing with people; she also has a few problems like kleptomania, and being amoral.

One day Anna does not consult her INFAT (a computer that tells her whether it is safe to go to locations) and sees her doppelgänger at a clothing store and she decides to investigate; this will lead her to a secret about herself and a person once known as Anna Zimmerman.

We notice through the story that her brother Rowan goes from hating Anna to helping and maybe even likening her. This could lead to lifesaving situation for the whole family.

An exotic looking and mysterious substitute music history teacher from school, Michaela Dupont is not helping; if anything she seems to be aggravating the situation (or is she supposed to be guiding the child to some end.) Anna at first suspects Michaela of being evil.

There is a lot of danger and mystery to the story. Stranger still is that Anna seems to becoming more human. You will find your self kibitzing during potential escape scenes. In the end you decide who the good guys are and who the bad are.

A movie based on this novel is "Anna to the Infinite Power" by Mildred Ames. The Novel and movie are closely aligned.
Dina Merrill as Sarah Hart
Martha Byrne as Anna Hart
Mark Patton as Rowan Hart
Jack Gilford as Dr. Henry Jelliff

If you find this story intriguing then you may want to read the Replica book series by Marilyn Kaye, starting with "Amy Number Seven."

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Nuggets of Ratzinger Insight!.......2006-06-11

While not the most original work in the field of Dogmatics and Catechetical work, this is a concise and approachable book that would serve nicely as a reference guide for those who find the official Catechism too dry or difficult to read. What is nice about this volume is that there is Catechism reference numbers that correspond to the subjects Pennock addresses at a given point in the book for those who wish to research further.

Having looked at many "Introductions to Catholicism" in order to better recommend books to those inquiring about a simple reference book to better understand their faith, I have found that this works well as both an introduction to Catholic faith and as an introduction to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The simple Question and Answer format allows for this book to be "taken it at your own pace".

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Presentation.......2005-11-19

"Meditation for the Day" books, in my life, usually only make it to mid-February. Ten years ago I easily and readily followed this one all the way to December 31. I highly recommend it now not only for that purpose, but as a fine introduction to the theological insight of the new pope.

It cannot be stressed enough, of course, that Papa Ratzi is, was, and shall always be an intellectual. He will not be everybody's cup of tea, but if in doubt, try him -- he is worth the effort. These excerpts are very carefully chosen to highlight some of his best and most evocative writing. As much of his writing appeared only in obscure theological journals, this was obviously no small feat. The German nun who put this together deserves great credit. Each nugget is perfectly rounded off at either end, most no longer than a page. And each is, indeed, a thought -- not an ecstasy, rant, or podge of pietistic mumbling -- elegant and clear. And indeed food for a following day's thought, something that will stick with you.

Ratzinger's voice, of course, is post-Vatican 2; the Christian community is a recurring theme. But it is often enough linked to the greater body of pre-existing Catholic teaching on the sacred mysteries that the council was supposed to merely restate in a modern idiom, not alter. Some may tire of a certain scholarly bent, a lack of tough confrontation with either you or the whole bad world. No, he is no Father Corapi -- nor has he the studied largescale dynamics of a Sheen. There is a certain cloistered air to the meditions, for sure. But their strength is in an unaffected grace, beauty in clarity, and certain conviction. If not shouted from the mountaintops, Ratzinger's meditations are quite obviously so part and parcel of him he probably repeats them in his sleep. Simply, this is another of those little books that had unique value whether or not the writer held any high ofice, much less the papacy.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Text for Both Tarts and Tortes.......2004-07-04

Nick Malgieri is one of the two or three most commonly referenced baking writers in modern American books on pastry (what the French call patisserie, as opposed to bread baking or boulangerie). The others by my informal survey are probably Maida Heatter and Flo Braker, with Lindsey Shere a close third or fourth. Before reading this book, `Perfect Pastry', I was at a loss to see the basis for his influence. His more recent book `How to Bake' is a great book of recipes for cakes, cookies, pies, tarts, bread, pizzas, muffins, and the like, and I use it as my `go to first' book when I want to try something new, and I have never been disappointed by the recipes I found therein. But the book is nothing but recipes. There are none of the whys and wherefores I always rate so highly in books such as the outstanding `The Secrets of Baking' by Sherry Yard. In `Perfect Pastry', I have found much which justifies the high regard in which Nick Malgieri is held by his colleagues.

Before I can intelligently rank this book, it is important to spell out where it fits into the world of books on patisserie. There are at least two different scales along which a pastry book may fall. The extremes of the first scale range from `strictly recipes', which you will find in books by Gale Gand and David Lebowitz to very high in teaching and explanation content as in this book and Sherry Yard's `The Secrets of Baking'.
The second scale ranges from highly specific content such as `cookies', `cakes', `pies', `fruit desserts', `chocolate', or even `cupcakes' to very general books. `Perfect Pastry' is intermediate between the general and the specific, as it covers pies, tarts, cake sponges, cake decorating, and cake filling, but it does not cover much about cookies.

Malgieri's concentration on pastry, cake sponges, and cake icings and fillings in this volume is a very, very good thing, as he covers this subject and allied matters such as ingredients to a depth I simply have not seen elsewhere. This book comes in a very close second to Sherry Yard's book as my favorite source of instruction on pastry. Yard's book may win by a nose because it is more fun to read and some explanations have a greater depth than you will find in `Perfect Pastry'. On the other hand, Malgieri's book covers a somewhat broader scope. His discussion of ingredients such as fruits and nuts alone is worth the price of admission. The third excellent pastry book I have recently reviewed is Flo Braker's `The Simple Art of Perfect Baking', which shares many of the excellent qualities found in `Perfect Pastry' with which it shares the distinction of being recently reissued with new editions. Malgieri, Braker, and Yard all approach pastry with some variation on the `master recipe' approach.

It is instructive to see how each of them teaches genoise. Malgieri takes the most general approach when he classifies genoise as one of the several different kinds of sponges that may be built into cakes. Braker separates cakes into butter and sponge cakes. Yard presents genoise as one of her basic master recipes, as a model for the general technique of foaming. No three recipes are the same. Malgieri's plain genoise is the simplest and least rich, with no butter, but slightly more sugar than Braker. Yard provides an option to use from two to eight ounces of butter. All use cake flour. Both Yard and Malgieri give weights for all major solid ingredients in English units. Braker gives weights for the same ingredients in metric units. My opinion on this is that if you are just starting out to weigh baking ingredients, go metric. It is much easier to scale recipes up or down using metric measurements. In their descriptions of the basic genoise method, all three are slightly different, but Braker and Malgieri's methods are more similar to one another than they are to Yard's description, although I am certain that all three methods will produce superior results. Braker's method is the wordiest, covering details on how to sift dry ingredients and crack open eggs. She is also the most helpful in giving you notes to be well prepared to execute the procedure in an effective manner. Malgieri's description covers baking in both round layer pans and in sheet pans, very important for genoise, as one of it's principle uses is in rolled desserts such as jelly rolls and Yule logs. Malgieri gives the most precise instructions on how to detect if the baking is done for both round and sheet pans.

Sherry Yard gives only four (4) applications, with some variations, of genoise rounds or sheets. Braker and Malgieri both give about 23 different variations. There is a fair amount of overlap, as both cover the usual chocolate and fruit applications, but there are also differences. If your heart is set on making a Yule Log, then you will need Malgieri's book. The organization of the recipes is somewhat different. Braker has all 23 together in a single chapter, while Malgieri's appear to be intermixed with other types of sponge cakes.

If you want an excellent book for learning a lot of different pastry techniques at a very reasonable price, get `Perfect Pastry' by Nick Malgieri in paperback. If you want a lot of well-esplained recipes for many of the same pastries, get Flo Braker's book. If you want a really good read about understanding pastry making, plus excellent recipes, get Sherry Yard's book. If you are a compulsive baking book collector, please get all three.

It is evident that of the three authors, Malgieri is the professional teacher. His book is the best text for baking techniques, Braker gives the best standalone recipes, and Yard is the deepest and most fun to read.

`Perfect Pastry' is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An intensive overview and great kitchen companion.......2002-04-04

Nick Malgieri has done it again. I have nearly all his cookbooks and they are all winners. In "Perfect Pastry," he gives not only superb, basic recipes (and some that are not so basic), but he concentrates on imparting his many years of experience to the reader via techniques and calm, sure guidance.

Having trouble making flaky piecrust? Malgieri calms you down and gives you the tools to start fresh. Want a fresh spin on a brioche? Malgieri has them here in spades. I haven't tried every single recipe in the book, but I've made many of them and have yet to be disappointed.

What really shines through here is Malgieri's intelligence and his people skills. It's clear that his experience as a pastry teacher at Peter Kump's cooking school in Manhattan gives him a voice of authority and a sense of purpose and confidence. He is a master at relaying information in a manner that is not only clear and concise, but that makes it sound--well, not easy, perhaps, but definitely doable. This kitchen classic is aimed at every cook from beginner to professional chef. If you enjoy baking, you could hardly ask for a better book of recipes or a better culinary reference on the topic.

5 out of 5 stars I use this book frequently!.......2000-06-08

When I get ready to bake something, I generally consult this book first. It is organized well and provides all the basic techniques (as well as some advanced ones), that I need for probably 75 percent of the baking projects I do. Even if I don't use Nick's recipes I use the techniques that are in the book. The techniques are explained well, with good pictures to support the text (or vice versa). I also can make my own creations built on the building blocks in this book. I even take the ideas, recipes, or flavor combinations from other sources and modify them so they use Nick's techniques or proportions or components.

98 percent of everything I've tried from this book has worked and tasted good (usually very good or excellent). This is a cookbook classic.

3 out of 5 stars Get it for the pictures, not the instructions.......2005-08-19

This was one of my first beading books. I was going to try lots of these designs, of course with twists because I can't just copy a design. Well, when I got into it, I found that the pictures were useful to get ideas from (all designs have color photos) BUT the information wasn't all that helpful. It has instructions like make a peyote band to whatever pattern you like. Then for the closure, make a little peyote loop that the end fits into. Try it. I dare you to make the watch stay on your wrist for more than 5 minutes. I dare you. After making several loops of various sizes, I ended up developing a velcro closure, but the bugs aren't out of that yet.

1 out of 5 stars Colors are all off.......2006-01-20

I have had this book for a few years and went to pull it out for a furniture project. I attempted to do the mahogany finish and went out and bought $100 worth of supplies that were suggested in the book. I even tore out the page with the paint colors on it and took it to my paint store.

After applying the glaze as suggested it didn't look anything like what is in the book.

It looked terrible and not even close to a mahogany color!

So disappointed. I do faux painting of different styles and am a very creative person so it isn't that I am not capable of a simple project as this.

I would suggest if you buy this book and attempt any of the projects to come up with your own colors to use and not follow what is in the book.

      Very disappointing!

5 out of 5 stars Decorative Painting for the Home.......2001-01-09

This book is good resource guide for faux painting with water base paints and products. Each process is well instructed though pictures of the finished technique, related color samples, tools needed and product recipes. Faux techniques covered are from your basic sponging to granite to marble to wood effects. A great book for beginner faux painters, but also terrific resource for decorative ideas. If anyone is looking for a comprehensive guide to faux painting, you not go wrong with this book.
