2 out of 5 stars Too small to be easy to read.......2006-11-04

I did not check the content yet since it is for a girl birthay present, but it is possible a condensed edition, because the others "La Edad de Oro" that I knew were a lot bigger books.

5 out of 5 stars It's an educational children's book.......1999-01-25

This book is soo good. I grew up on it as a child in Cuba and it's just as I remember it. Marti was not only a genius but loved children. Adults can benefit from reading the book. It's thought provoking.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book by the world's finest poet........1998-09-13

Jose Marti was an amazing man. Poet, writer, revolutionary hero - his poetry is heartbreakingly beautiful and his essays on human dignity and courage eye-opening. It's only a shame that most Americans cannot understand his words.

Anyone who can understand Spanish and hasn't read this amazing little book is truly missing out.

It's time that someone translated this treasure into other languages so much more of the world can learn to cherish it.

5 out of 5 stars A life-changing book.......1998-07-16

"La Edad de Oro" is a classic book for all Cuban children; imagine George Washington having edited and written a magazine for children and collecting its few issues in one volume. During his exile, the Cuban patriot and author Jose Marti edited a children's magazine in New York. He included classic stories he had translated from other languages, his own poetry and articles dealing with history or current events. A fighter for Cuba's independence in the 19th century, Marti's perspective was that of an anti-colonialist and champion of justice. That being said, it's not difficult to see why this would be a life-changing book for many children (as Marti hoped it would. After all, he was concentrating on children as a way of turning out future adults who would also champion liberty and justice). Some of the stories have a decidedly Victorian outlook but so many are full of a fire for justice that could politicize young readers. His account of the conquest of the Am! ! ericas by the Spanish is unforgettable. I first read this book in its original Spanish version when I was five or six and it changed me forever. Call me a bleeding-heart liberal, a card-carrying pinko...whatever...but I believe so many of the causes I'm interested in (anti-nukes, social justice, anti-poverty, etc.) came as a result of Marti's having opened my eyes to racism, capitalism, colonialism and a yearning for liberty when I was young. And my parents thought they were giving me a nice little storybook! He surrounded his stories about freedom with stories about magic fish and poems about a girl's little pink shoes with the intention of turning out a generation of socially conscious Cuban kids. What a genius!

5 out of 5 stars Apuntes tras su estudio.......1998-08-25

                  Book Description

Edward E. "Doc" Smith's visionary Lensmen series of stories began in 1934 in the pages of Amazing Stories, and when it finished in 1948 it was universally recognized as the greatest space opera yet written. In telling the tale of a cosmos-spanning battle between good and evil, the Lensmen saga encompassed two entire galaxies in collision, each home to a primordial race of nearly limitless power. On one side were the Arisians, uplifting agents of wisdom who had taken it upon themselves to mentor the younger races and steer them towards the enlightenment they called Civilization. On the other were the Eddorians, embodiments of crushing efficiency and unthinking obedience who had woven together a vast web of tyrannies called the Boskone, through which they plotted the enslavement of all life. As their greatest weapon in the fight against the Boskone, the Arisians created the Lenses -- almost-living complexities of crystal that released and amplified their wearers' latent psychic powers. Those chosen for this honor were called Lensmen, and as the leaders of the Galactic Patrol they formed Civilization's spearhead against the Boskone. Within the Žlite ranks of the Lensmen was an even more rarified Žlite -- the four Second Stage Lensmen, one from each of the races which the Arisians had chosen as the most capable defenders of their galaxy. It is one of these Second Stage Lensmen -- the Velantian named Worsel -- that David A. Kyle chose to headline his first authorized sequel to Smith's Lensmen canon: The Dragon Lensman.

As The Dragon Lensman opens, the Boskonian conspiracy seems to have been vanquished with its defeat at the great Battle of Klovia, and the victorious Galactic Patrol is busy re-orienting itself to face the new challenges of policing a galaxy instead of defending it against a ruthless invader. Among those adjusting to the new reality is Second Stage Lensman Worsel, the legendary warrior/scientist famed for his intelligence and dedication to the fight against ignorance and evil. Like all of his species, Worsel resembles the mythological dragons of old Tellus (Earth), with a sinewy, ten-meter-long body covered in scales and boasting great wings and terrifying claws and teeth. But Worsel's real strength is his mind and its unmatched psychic abilities, concentrated and focused by the Lens shining among his many eye-stalks. And it is the intuition bred of that power that now draws Worsel to the Velantians' incredible archive, the 18-mile-wide artificial moon known as the Planetoid of Knowledge, where he feels certain something important is waiting for him.

He is right -- but what awaits him on POK is more than he bargained for, and before long Worsel and his fellow Lensmen are racing against time to confront a threat that almost no one had thought possible: machines becoming self-aware and battling against organic Civilization, their calcuating computer brains invisible to any kind of psychic detection!

To counter this new menace, the Dragon Lensman finds himself hurtling through space to rendez-vous with the one Lensman who understands robots well enough to strategize against an inorganic uprising -- the mysterious Twenty-Four of Six, whose knowledge of machines turns out to be deeper and more hard-won than even Worsel could guess.

Soon it becomes clear that Civilization will need every bit of that knowledge, and more besides, to face the enemies that are now revealing themselves. For behind the overt power there lurks a vastly more dangerous covert one, and to defeat it Worsel will not only have to challenge the worst fears of his race, but also discover the secret of the young Lensman with whom he must entrust his life -- a secret that will shake the very foundations of the Galactic Patrol!

                  1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-06-19

With E.E. Smith long gone, the readers who loved his Lensman series could only hope for an addition like those that followed Dune. Dune's sequels followed (even explained), in perfect style- the original series.

This book breaks E.E.'s style and technology so blatantly, it can only be called a Lensman book by virtue of licensing, and the names of the characters. Smith created whole technologies, within the constraints of his era's science. This book breaks all the technological parameters set by Smith. In "Dragon" we have high-tech AI when, 20 years later in the REAL series, the computer at Grand Base on Tellus is still "Kicking out (punch) cards". This just does not fit.

If you want to return to the worlds of Tellus and Klovia, where Lensmen guard the galaxy, men were men, and girls were girls, this book is NOT for you. The short story "Doomed Lensmen" (google the name to find copies online) does a much better job FOR FREE.

Someday, I hope the Smith Estate has the wisdom to commission someone of Kevin J. Anderson's ability (who wrote the 6 new Dune novels). Then we can REALLY go back and enjoy the 20 years between "Second Stage Lensman" and "Children of the Lens".

3 out of 5 stars Almost about Worsel........2005-06-01

This is billed as a continuation of the Lensman saga, and a story about Worsel. The first is true; the second isn't.

In this era of Star Wars: Expanded Universe, and endless Star Trek novels, not to mention the Brian Herbert's prequels, and pre-prequel Dune novels, you get used to other people wanting to build upon others ingenuity. Occasionally, as in the case of the novelization of Revenge of the Sith, and in ST:TNG "Q-Squared," you get surprising winners. However, most of the time, to books read like a mediocre episode of the series.

It is not that Kyle has big shoes to fill. Rather, he has quirky shoes that are several decades out of style. You can forgive Doc Smith for writing pulp because he was a bona fide pulp writer. Kyle, however, has a better soul, prose, and style that does not flow well with Doc Smith's.

In some ways, this is an improvement. Doc could get word and awk-"wordy" at times. The pacing was too quick at times, and the breezy slang can be like reading another language. This slows the modern reader down.

I think Kyle has only two problems. One, he tweaks the Lensman continuum too much. With 29 of 6 not getting the regenerative treatment that was already established "Second Stage Lensman," it was a hefty discontinuity. Since this is a main character, it did not seem believable.

Then there is the problems of el-sike, a purely Kyle invention which doe not flow out of the original Doc cannon.

Second, you could feel the influence of other SF in this book-Pok reminded me of the Death Star, Arrow-22-a here-and-gone character-was Hal 9000 with a stutter.

The last and biggest problem is that this story is not about Worsel, but about Kallatra. The Old Snake is the point of view character, but he is not the main character, in the same way that Holmes provides the POV, with Sherlock the main charter. The resolution of the plot hinges upon Kallatra. Consequently, she steals all of Worsel's potential thunder. The Snake is more of a mentor (no pun intended), with Kinnison and Mentor being redundant beings.

I find Kallatra a very disturbing character. She appears out of nowhere, is the central being to the plot, and undergoes an agonizing near death with the entire Galactic Patrol and Lensman Corps looking on in awe. In short, she is a MARY SUE character.

So . . . if you are a die hard Lensman fan, buy the whole trilogy to round out your collection. But do not expect the same type of book. It is an easier read, but not as good a story.

4 out of 5 stars almost as good as E.E.Smith.......2000-10-30

I just finished reading The Dragon Lensman, and though it was not as satisfying as the first six books of E.E. Smith's Lensman Series, it was still fantastic reading.

I had started reading it before, but laid it down unfinished. Then I discovered Z Lensman, read it, enjoyed it, then came back and read Dragon.

I do suggest, however, that you read Dragon first, then Z second, as Z builds on some of the events of Dragon, then, of course, read the Rigellian version.

If you love E.E.Smith's books, as I do, then definitely read David Kyle's three Lensman books, written from the points of view of the other three Second Stage Lensmen.

Words cannot express the value of this book.
This book is a must for anyone who is interested in the dark feminine and the psychology of the feminine. The book consists of essays, written by different authors, mainly about their personal experiences and their introduction to the dark feminine. This book provides information about the goddesses, which is not easy to find in other books.
While reading this book, I was drowned to places, stories and tales that transformed my learning into pleasure. This is one of the books that effects the mind, but also fills the heart, the boundary between science and religion.

I am always leery of male authors writing about the
                  dark feminine.

One of the best books I have read on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Mostly about the Black Madonna.......2005-01-05

9 out of the 16 essays are about the Black Madonna. There is one essay on Lilith, one on Kali, and one on the Morrigan. There is a poem by Clarissa Pinkola Estes about Guadalupe. There is an essay on Mary Magdalene. A further two are from the christian perspective. This book is a mix of the religious and the jungian. It has essays by artists, pschoanalysts and priests. It works. The most valuble essay for me was "The Dark Irish Goddess Morrigan" by Sylvia Brinton Perera--it was worth the price of the book.Despite the fact that this book is skewed a bit toward the chirstian perspective--i still enjoyed reading it.The authors were most interesting when they spoke of their own spiritual and psychological journeys in relation to the Dark Feminine.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for Jungians.......2003-11-08

Dr. Gustafson has brought together a wonderful collection of essays on the dark feminine by a wide spectrum of noted authorities. There are also some great photographs. Anyone interested in Analytical Psychology, mythology, religion, ecology and the Shadow will love this book.

                    Book Description

Handsome full-color photos, informatively labeled line drawings, and an enlightening text show how to identify antique chairs, tables, bureaus, case furniture, coffee pots, teapots, silverware, candlesticks, glassware, and porcelain pieces according to the historical period of their origin. The key to identification lies in recognizing an era's representative shapes and matching them to the antique being examined. Fine examples of European and American craftsmanship spanning three centuries are shown and discussed, starting in the mid 1600s and progressing to the 1930s. Illustrations show how basic furniture styles were derived by copying and scaling down the dominant architectural shapes of the day, and how artisans in different countries then added their own distinctive touches. The authors advise collectors on what to look out for when buying an antique, then tell how to detect any repairs, and know whether or not a repair affects the piece's value. Historical periods discussed in detail present detailed information on the Baroque to Rococo (mid 1600s to late 1700s), the Chippendale story, Neoclassical style, the Machine Age, and Art Deco. All historical chapters contain a Shape Identifier section, clearly illustrating the period's dominant lines and shapes. Beautifully photographed room settings capture the mood of each period. More than 400 full-color photos and drawings.

This book is an excellant source book for someone who does not know alot about period details. I learned alot from the book and while I work with antiques everyday I do not see these types of items that often. The book focused on museum quality pieces, not things the common man would find in most antique shops. I would still recomend this book, it is beautifully put together, cohesive and a pleasure to read.

This book is a little more advanced than the author's earlier books, but not much! It must have been written before the advent of Prower Pro and Fireline (fishing line) because she recommends using nylon beading thread. Bugle beads WILL cut through nylon thread in time because of their sharp edges. Though most of the designs in this book have a Native American 'flavor', there are other designs as well. Easy to understand instructions, and except for the porcupine quills, readily available materials.

                      Book Description

What is driving communication and what are the real challenges facing designers today?

Whereishere, an unprecedented print-website concept that presents a radical new take on both these issues, breaks from the orthodox approach to understanding two dimensional design.

The authors focus on what they see as being at the heart of modern communication: the designers search for identity. Both book and website offer a provocative combination of images and typography.

Leading graphic design studios are represented including Bruce Mau and Cranbrook Academy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Help for understanding Bergman.......2002-05-01

I took an Ingmar Bergman class, and I therefore had to watch a lot of Bergman films as well as analyze and write about them. Many of Bergman films as many know are sometimes very hard to understand. However this book cleared up so many things for me in the films. The fact the book is mostly Bergman commenting on his own films is great, so you don't have someone else trying to interpret someone else's mind. I you need or want to better understand and enjoy Bergman's works, get this book!!
