    Book Description

The multi-layered allegorical masterpiece that prefigured the rise of National Socialism. A teasing lightness of tone pervades this fable-like short novel about two lovers who, during a summertime idyll in the Swedish countryside, encounter a crying young girl running for her life from a children's home run by a sadistic headmistress. The lovers take the girl back to her parents, but the fact remains: the mistress's grip gets more crushing every time one of her charges tries to slip out of it. Catsle Gripsholm is one of the undisputed classics of modern German literature-a parable of devastating beauty and malice, as exuberant and lyrical in its descriptions of nature and pastoral innocence as it is bitter and undermining in its contempt for the Nazi regime that forced the author into exile, publicly burned his books, and persecuted him until his early death.

It's hard to translate such a book from its original language (German) yet a fine job has been done.

5 out of 5 stars A marvellous classic love story........2000-02-03

Tucholsky shows that he can write in a gentle, almost pastel-colored style. A marvellous book, well worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars great stories, but collection lack cohesive feel.......2004-11-10

I fell in love with the character, Sonja Blue, in Collins's MIDNIGHT BLUE, so finding this collection was very exciting for me. For the uninitiated, Sonja Blue is an unhappy and unstable vampire who has dedicated her afterlife to killing vamps and other monsters. She's tough, stronger than most vamps because she can walk in daylight, and completely punk rock. But she has a dark side, the `other', who is like a split personality, appearing and creating chaos in Sonja's otherwise orderly existence.

Nancy Collins is a great writer. She really takes you into the story and makes you care for the characters. The only reason I'm not giving DEAD ROSES five stars is because I thought this collection wasn't as cohesive as it could've been. It was more like reading a file of journal entries on Sonja, than stories that took you from point A to point B. If you are new to Collins and Blue, I would suggest reading MIDNIGHT BLUE first, just so you can get a better feel for what's going on.

If you like vamps, comics, punk rock, strong women, monsters, good writing, or all of the above, you should pick up this book. You won't be sorry.

3 out of 5 stars Silver Threads Among The Graves.......2004-08-23

Nancy Collins may not have originated Southern punk vampire stories (if you will admit that such a thing exists) but she has played a key role in the development of the genre. Her narratives are more pithy and less meandering than Poppy Brite and Caitlin Kiernan (who is heir and grand master to all of them). Sonja Blue is in many ways a comic book style character. Made a vampire unwillingly, full of anger, she has set about destroying the monsters of the world. The monsters like her.

She is conflicted struggling much like a dark Angel to keep from giving into the evil that has set up a home within her, she lurks on the edges of society defending it against the predators, even as she wonders whether it is worth saving. There isn't a lot of hope in Sonja Blue. Even in Nonesuch, the longest story in this collection, the prospect of a society where pretenders and humans can live together is poisoned by the knowledge that it is a flower in the desert, and not a pretty one.

For the most part these tales tell of Sonja Blues quirky kind of justice which sometimes destroys a monster lurking on the street and at other times shatters the fragile beauty of old death. The narrator is sometimes Sonya, sometimes another character, and sometimes Collins herself. Because the book is drawn partially from existing storys and part from new material, the writing style seems a bit inconsistent. Collins remains a matter-of-fact writer throughout, rarely getting lost in excessive prose.

I found the book half satisfying. It falls short of some of Collins other work (Sunglasses After Dark and In The Blood, for example). It you are looking for the best introduction to Collins' work try Midnight Blue, which collects all the early Sonja Blue material. This collection is a bit more for already made fans, who can tolerate the unevenness to get to the juicy bits.

4 out of 5 stars The continuing adventures of Sonja Blue.-.......2002-12-19

"When you keep the hours that I do, you often find yourself in other people's stories."

      -Sonja Blue

With the exception of "Knifepoint," which takes place before she was "born," and "Cold Turkey," which provides telling insight into her "otherness," the words above perfectly capture the tenor of the remaining stories in this collection, which feature Nancy Collins' vampiric vampire killer, Sonja Blue, as a cynical, world weary adventurer, who, when she's not hunting her own kind, is cleaning up her little corner of the world, a la Clint Eastwood's "Man with No Name." In "Tender Tigers," she rescues a child from her abusive stepmother, an ogre; In "Vampire King of the Goth Chicks," she gives a vampire wannabe his comeuppance; "Variations on a Theme" finds her in James O'Barr's "Crow" universe; "Some Velvet Morning" features her in her "angel of vengeance" mode, hunting down one of the oldest of her kind; finally, in "The Nonesuch Horror," she teams up with the werewolf sheriff of a remote western town to rid the hamlet of an unwelcome visitor.

Always the pro, Collins makes each of these pieces work, milking her themes and situations for all they're worth. Doing so, she delivers a handful of solid entertainments that should inspire longstanding fans to revisit her worthy Sonja Blue novels, and those new to her work to sample them for the first time.

        Book Description

In this new, excellent detective novel, Lnia Guiu, the detective/protagonist of Study in Lilac and Antipodes, again cracks the case, this time of a woman's missing daughter, but not without the usual contretemps, tension, and riddles, as well as good humor. A desperate mother searches for her daughter, Jlia. Lnia takes on the job of looking for her in Mallorca, her last known whereabouts, but no one there knows anything. But Lnia suspects that her informers are lying. A Castilian song with its deformed version in Catalan provides a clue, and little by little she unravels the mystery, but she pays a price: a destroyed car, a sprained ankle, a finger in a cast, and a beating or two... With lots of action and lots of emotion, there is no doubt that it is an Oliver novel. In Blue Roses, Lnia has reached the level of the best current detectives, like Sue Grafton's, for example. She is now prepared to take on strange and difficult situations: mixtures of magic and sex, hatred and tenderness, fantasy and action. Maria-Antnia Oliver has done a good job of consolidating her protagonist's character. Blue Roses is a solid literary product which will please both Lnia Guiu fans and those who enjoy high quality works of detective fiction.

You've seen the "Doctor Who" TV series--now experience the original "Doctor Who" novels and audios! This third volume in the I, Who series continues to detail and review the last two years worth of "Doctor Who" novels and audios, with story summaries, top ten lists and a heap of humorous categories. Written by Lars Pearson (Wizard, ToyFare, InQuest magazines), with a cover by comics superstar Gene Ha (Top Ten), this book also features an Uber-Timeline that attempts to place more than 450 "Doctor Who" stories (TV, novels and audios) into a single, glorious history.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Doctor Who novel/audio guide.......2003-07-22

This is the third volume in Lars Pearson's 'I,Who' series of reference books that provides details and reviews of Doctor Who books and audios. It also covers the Bernice Summerfield spin-offs (Bernice or 'Benny' was a companion in the 7th Doctor range of books published by Virgin in the 1990s). I have zero interest in Benny, so I avoid reading those sections. However, the Doctor Who material makes up the bulk of the book and makes it well worth purchasing.

As with Lars' previous volumes, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I don't always agree with the reviews but I can't deny that they are entertaining. Each synopsis is extremely thorough. I always find myself reading about a book I've already read and being reminded of details I missed the first time around or just plain forgot about.

This is the only series of books available that provide thorough and entertaining reviews of Doctor Who spin-off stories..and thankfully they are so good that there's no point in anyone else trying to publish similar guides. If you are a serious fan of Doctor Who books and/or audios, then these books are an essential purchase. I hope that we see many more volumes in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to Doctor Who spin-offs.......2003-11-24

Since Doctor Who ceased production as a television series, the adventures of the Doctor have been continued in book and audio form. In the early 1990s, the book arm of Virgin started a range of novels featuring the seventh Doctor called 'The New Adventures' which was eventually followed by books featuring past Doctors called 'The Missing Adventures'. When the TV Movie starring Paul McGann was announced, the BBC took over the book licence and commenced publishing two series of books referred to by fans as the EDAs (Eighth Doctor Adventures) and PDAs (Past Doctor Adventures). Big Finish Productions entered the picture and produced an ongoing and successful series of original audio plays featuring Doctors five, six, seven and eight.

This book is the second volume of Lars Pearsons guide to these spin-off stories, and his reviews are detailed and opinionated. Best of all, they are written in an entertaining style that makes for easy reading. This is an improvement on the first book which featured illustrations that had little relevance to the text (understandable in a way as Lars obviously didn't want to upset the BBC by using trademarked images) and a number of typos.

Essential reading for fans of original Doctor Who fiction and audio dramas.

This book is a must for Who fans who haven't been able to keep up since the tv series ending. Pearson divides each review into several sections including ones titled sex and spirits, things you need (essentially discussing the sci fi technology in the story), character developments etc.

The reviews are written in a laid back style which not only tells you the gist of each novel/audio, but also makes it enjoyable and funny at times.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended study of Zen.......2007-02-19

Dr. Benoit provided the Western world an excellent collection of insights into life based on his study of the earliest Zen/Ch'an teachers, Western psychology and, I'm sure, personal suffering. These were essays in the true, original sense of the word: attempts. Each chapter pretty much stands on its own as a new effort of understanding. It represents a considerably deeper view of Zen than is popularly circulated. Benoit brings the necessity of self-knowledge to the mix of energetic meditation and satoris that people associate with modern Zen, and he provides hard won clues as to what self-knowledge really can consist of. It is a study of partiality. We are, unknowingly, dreaming our lives. The psyche is steeped in conditioning of all sorts that it mistakes for objectivity. Among these conditioned beliefs masquerading as objectivity are those that assert that we are free, that we have the power to improve ourselves, that our perpetual failures are personal faults. Zen is not or ought not to be a self-improvement program. All this personal improvement stuff is symptomatic of the illness not the cure. There is above us, beyond the reach of personal ambition, a healing goodness that is trying to find us.

Graham Rooth's apparently rather free translation is excellent. The original translation was at times unnecessarily difficult, involving made-up words and requiring knowledge of clinical psychology beyond what most of us have, and reminding one painfully at times of the well- educated, French academician. Graham Rooth seems to have fully understood the author's purposes and communicates them quite well. This is the type of material that requires a long digestion. It's not the type of book you can read once and get. It's one of those rare books that is about something Real, the real possibility of inner transformation, and so it is of great value, especially in this bizarre world of empty, soul-less distractions.

5 out of 5 stars zen for the modern world.......2006-05-04

great text explaining the philosophy and practice of zen in the modern world. Sometimes the explanation is complex, not sure if this is due to the difficult translation.

        Wonderful translation...

4 out of 5 stars Challenging and important........2005-08-27

This new translation of Hubert Benoit's work constitutes one of the most important, and challenging, books ever written on the nature of Zen and its relation to human psychology. Graham Rooth is to be congratulated for giving us a better translation of Benoit's classic work. And Sussex Academic Press is to be congratulated for publishing this collection of Benoit's work in a single volume.

Benoit unpacks the teaching of Hui-Neng in terms of modern psychology (and its relation to classical metaphysics). However, this unpacking unfolds over several hundred pages of dense analytical work in which Benoit sometimes shifts his perspective and amends his conclusions. This book requires both patience and determination.

My suggestion is to first scan through this collection and establish a reading map for further, in-depth, consideration. Read this work selectively, one small part at a time, reading those parts that make the most sense, first. This book is not easy to understand --like Zen itself, it challenges the way you think. However, once you get a foothold, it is a book that you can return to for many, many years.

For serious students of Zen, this book is one of the most important and valuable books ever written. It is well worth the struggle that it will require.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Starter Book.......2007-02-10

A little long on the history of scroll saws but still very interesting. Well put together and relitively up to date on equipment. The only scrollsaw not shown is the new Delta saw. Great book for beginners but there is something in this book for everyone. Very well documented lots of how-to photos.

            5 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied!.......2007-01-27

This book is very informative and a must have for all those interested in learning to use a Scroll Saw.
I was very pleased with this book and would highly recommend it. It is very thorough and covers all the bases concerning Scroll Saws such as history of the saw, saftey tips, how the saw works and much more useful information.

            Synopsis (quote)
The world's leading scroll saw expert offers a masterful comprehensive reference covering the equipment, materials, and artistry, from time-honoured methods to critiques of the latest machines and accessories. A bestseller in its classic first edition for 15 years, the guide's massive technical updates and new sections make an even more valuable contribution, with simplified instructions on ways to apply the latest innovations and how to make the best projects from the past even better. Sections on current models and major parts of the scroll saw; accessories; how to select a saw; blades, speeds, & feeds; safety techniques & guidelines; patterns & layout; scroll-sawing basics; stack-cutting & cutting thick wood; sawing thin & small stock; compound sawing; inlay work; marquetry basics; fine fretwork; appliques & overlays; joinery; sawing plastics; sawing metals; segmentation & intarsia; finishing basics.

The synopsis above says it all, but what it doesn't say is how readable and informative it is. I first saw the early edition of this book at my uncle's, and spent the entire evening engrossed in it, to the dismay of my wife and aunt, but delight of my uncle. Subsequently I purchased the new updated version, and was pleasantly surprised at how many of the modern saws were included and appraised. Although American, so are the majority of the designs in your major Hardware Store (even if they're actuallly produced in China or Taiwan).

The history of the scroll saw is given, with plenty of pictures of the various makes, showing improvements and simplifications to the basic design. Then we get the theory and mechanics of scroll sawing and why some designs are better and/or more or less expensive than others - what you get for your money, in short.

The book manages to avoid the trap of 'designs that any idiot can make', instead detailing the whole gamut of techniques, blades, jigs and materials to enable one to produce anything from the simplest to the most complex, professional-looking piece of work.

Loaded with hints, tips, Dos&Dont's, this is a must-buy for all woodwork/filigree enthusiasts. *****

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!.......2003-01-26

I haven't touched my Scroll Saw since High School (10+ years). I wanted to fire it up again and do a little more than cutting letters out of plywood. I bought this book primarily because it looked pretty extensive and was recently re-published. It mostly covers technique and has no patterns for stupid schlock like owl napkin holders. This book shows you what you can do with your saw from simple to complex. If you are a beginner or looking to increase your skill, this is a must have.

                                  Book Description

Wim Wenders's fascinating and often moving account of his experiences helping one of the masters of modern cinema make his final film.

In 1983 the world-renowned filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni suffered a physically debilitating stroke that left him severely aphasic. While mentally alert, he had, but for roughly a dozen words in Italian, lost the ability to speak and to write. He was able to draw--but only with his left hand. None of this, however, could extinguish his creative drive and he was determined to continue working. Eventually he managed to convince financiers that he was still capable of making a film as long as there was another director on the set to interpret his drawings and nods of the head. Thus in the spring of 1994, with the internationally acclaimed German filmmaker Wim Wenders signed on as co-director to calm concerned insurers, he began filming Beyond the Clouds.

My Time with Antonioni is Wenders's diary of filming with "the maestro." With insight and respect, he recounts the experiences--both good and bad--of striving to bring to fruition Antonioni's cinematic vision.

5 out of 5 stars On psychology of movie making.......2001-05-02

I enjoyed reading WW diary primarily for the insights to the personal struggles of the director working with somebody who is his master. Book is full of slight and not-so-slight overtones on the relationship between two men; sadness at the realization that "Beyond the Clouds" in all probability will be Antonioni's last movie; impossibility of filling in the personal artistic content for the other artist. I was amazed on the technique which Antonioni is unfortunately left with after his paralysis - finger gestures and a few disconnected utterances. I would recommend this book to a student of cinema; and also to the lover of biography genre.
