Mary Shelley's short children's tale, Maurice, or the Fisher's Cot, remained undiscovered for 200 years. It's a charming enough story about a stolen child who is eventually reunited with his parents, but taken on its own merits, Maurice is far more likely to appeal to Shelley scholars than to modern-day children. Fortunately, its publishers recognize this and have sensibly included a fascinating introduction by Claire Tomalin--indeed, the introduction is longer than the story itself. In it, Tomalin describes the circumstances under which the manuscript was rediscovered (in a trunk, in a palazzo, in Tuscany) and its authenticity verified:
We were greeted by Andrea and Cristina Dazzi, and offered coffee. Then the manuscript of Maurice was brought out and laid in front of me on the table: an alarming moment because coffee and manuscripts must not occupy the same space. Once we had separated them, I found Maurice exactly as Cristina Dazzi had described it.
Tomalin then goes on to relate the unhappy life of its author from her impulsive elopement to the continent with the then-married Percy Shelley through the early deaths of three of her children and the unorthodox relationship between herself, her husband, and her sister--who may also have been Percy Shelley's lover. So riveting is the preface to Shelley's short story, in fact, that a more accurate title might have been An Introduction by Claire Tomalin with a Long-Lost Tale by Mary Shelley.

Included in this slim volume are two versions of Maurice; one is "corrected and slightly modernized for ease of reading." The other is a facsimile of the original with Shelley's lineation, pagination, spelling, corrections. Read in the context of the author's own unhappy experience of losing children, her fable of a child regained resonates poignantly. This is one lost tale we're glad was found. --Alix Wilber

Book Description

In the fall of 1997, in a palazzo in the Tuscan hills north of Florence, a small booklet sewn into paper covers turned up in a long-unopened crate of old letters and other documents. It bore the title "Maurice" and an inscription: "For Laurette from her friend
Mrs Shelley." Investigation proved it to be a story written by Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, a story presumed by scholars to have been irretrievably lost soon after its composition in 1820. It is here published for the
first time.
Written two years after her great gothic novel, Maurice dates from a period when Mary Shelley, still only twenty-two, was deeply sunk in depression. She had eloped with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley at sixteen, borne him four children and seen three of them die. Thus, though Maurice is basically a charming moral tale written for a child--the daughter of a close friend--it betrays a vein of melancholy, beginning with a funeral and concerning a boy who has lost his parents. Even the happy ending has a sad twist.
Claire Tomalin--the distinguished biographer of, among others, Jane Austen and Mary Shelley's mother, Mary Wollstonecraft--was personally involved in the authentication
of the rediscovered manuscript. She here contributes a comprehensive and fascinating
introduction that explores the literary and
psychological importance of the story and investigates the hitherto obscure histories of the two extraordinary families whose lives it touched.

4 out of 5 stars Biography and a Story.......2005-07-11

Mary Shelley was such an interesting person, as indeed many around her were. And yet, for all that, she has been totally dwarfed by her one famous novel - 'Frankenstein' - but even here it is not really Mary Shelley. The novel firstly became famous - not as Mary Shelley's story but as a theatrical adaptation. And since then films have built on and obscured the original genius of 'Frankenstein'.

Surprise, surprise - Mary was a lot better than that. She was a very talented and perceptive writer. There are some recommendations below. 'Maurice' is a beautiful story full of pathos and the regrets of life where it seems impossible to award benefit where it is due without splashing it to where it doesn't belong, or to deliver punishment where it's due without - in the same way - delivering negatives to others who do not deserve it.

The biographical information about Mary Shelley and about 'Maurice' itself is a fascinating story and certainly adds to what is really a very short story - justifying publishing it in a single volume.

Other recommendations:
Mary Shelley - Transformation
Mary Shelley - Matilda
Mary Shelley - Frankenstein (if you haven't read it you may be surprised)
William Godwin - Caleb Williams (Godwin was Mary's father)

My friend offered me this book to read. It's an amazing work. I read the acutal story and then went back and read the introduction and all the accompanying material. The story itself is cute and definately for children. Then you read the intro and all of a sudden you realize that there was so much more that went into the story than you imagined. I highly reccommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Mary Shelley for kids.......2000-08-23

This tale is a far cry from Mary's most acclaimed work, Frankenstein. And why not? It was, after all, written for a little girl, and therefore not intended to house any complexities. It is a simple story, broken into three small parts in the fashion of popular adult stories of Shelley's time, and is a tad on the predictable side. It reads almost like a fairytale, with the stolen child reunited with his parents (who happen to be well-off) by pure chance. Despite the story's lack of surprises, I still found it wonderful to settle back into the familiarity of Shelley's writing style with a new text (as will most who have researched her). "The Fisher's Cot" will also appeal to Mary Shelley fans because of the introduction by Claire Tomalin at the very beginning. Tomalin does a good job of setting the scene that the story was written in so that the casual reader will be able to enjoy not only the actual story, but the story behind it as well. Overall, if you're a Shelley fan you definitely should get this book. If you're not, I politely suggest that you review all your options first.

5 out of 5 stars The Cherry on Top.......2007-05-20

"Lord of Stormweather" is the seventh and final installment in the very good "Sembia" series of novels. This time, the emphasis is on Tamlin, the heir to Uskreven fortune. The book is written by Dave Gross, who wrote Black Wolf (Forgotten Realms: Sembia series, Book 4), in my opinion the best book of the series so far.

I just loved this book from the very beginning to the end. This novel offers more substance than some trilogies, and course of events makes you flip page after page. Gross shows fantastic control over the flow of the book, finishing chapters with cliff-hangers, then moving to other characters and plots, just to return to that particular cliff-hanger after a chapter or two. You simply can't find a dull page in this novel. Author's style is detailed and rich, subtly reminding you that you are in the Forgotten Realms page after page. The novel is also bursting with veiled and unveiled witticisms. In terms of character development, Tamlin gets fleshed out to become one of the most complex characters in the world of FR. All of the other protagonists from earlier books of the series play a prominent role in this closing novel. Villains are equally interesting, with one recurring villain from "The Black Wolf" given a new dimension. Fantastic. Plot-wise, Gross somehow succeeds in weaving intrigue, mystery, magic, love, ambition and treachery flawlessly together.

Now comes the part where I write about the things I didn't like about a novel. In the case of this particular one, I have only one complaint. It was only 300 pages long. A pity. I could've effortlessly read a 1000 more.

To put it short, a magnificent novel to end great series (Five good, one mediocre and only one weak book). Better than Black Wolf (Forgotten Realms: Sembia series, Book 4), believe it or not. One of the best books ever to come out of WotC publishing. Make absolutely sure that you don't miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great end novel.......2003-04-10

Ignore all other editorials! This book is excellent! While, obstensibly, it is about Duece, the firstborn son of Thamalon Uskerven it actually involves the entire Usk family.

LOS neatly wraps up the Sembian series and sets up a new novel that will be released in 2004! While some things are left unfinished as there are new series coming out involving Erevis Cale and Tazi, so if you are looking for closure with them forget it! As for Thamalon the elder, Shamur, Tamlin, and Talbot we do see completion.

The book also brings back some old characters from Gross's earlier Sembian novel, Radu and Chaney. Centering on the evils of the Hulourn and Drakkar and a fiendish plot to eliminate the heads of the merchant houses. There are plenty of evil murders to go around as well as a mystery involving Tamlin.

The tale is paced quite nicely, and just when you get involved in one portion of the tale you are swept into another. This book is a definate improvement over Gross's previous novel BLACK WOLF. While Wolf was good, this novel really does what it sets out to do, and manages to entertain all the way through.

3 out of 5 stars Leave This One Behind.......2003-03-24

The storyline driving the plot - the heads of the Uskevren household are mysteriously abducted and it is up to the young heir to rescue them - is worthy and appropriately epic. The setting of the book is interesting and thoroughly exotic. The main villain - the Sorcerer - appears to be mysterious and convincingly evil. It seems as if Dave Gross assembled all the requisite pieces for an enjoyable fantasy Forgotten Realms novel. However, they say appearances are deceiving and this once-promising book is a prime example. The plot constantly refers to events that happened in previous books in the series (Sembia) without ever explaining the context in which they are used. In addition, the plot moves forward haphazardly with random events happening to a host of random characters at seemingly random times. Gross adds in quite a few plot twists, which are ill-advised and poorly justified. Finishing the book brings about little satisfaction and I found myself questioning whether I had read the whole book over a bottle of tequila; that's how unexplainable some parts of the story still were to me. In the end, this book is still suitable for those must-read, die-hard Forgotten Realms fans (such as myself), but casual fantasy readers should not even bother to scan this book's back cover.

    1 out of 5 stars You're no Philip K. Dick........2005-01-22

Ugh. This type of book is something Philip K. Dick does -way- better. The whole misplaced identity and 'tyranical' government thing is just handled so poorly here.

The attempts at philosphing are such poor straw-man scenarios (Do you want your government telling you where you can go! Don't give out any personal information!). And the whole multiple identity thing is just chunky.

At least Dick kept you in suspense as to which identity was valid, and made you care/humanize with the poor guy. This book is nothing more than a cheap execuse for Mr. Hogan to expouse on how much he hates government intrusion (yet I bet he'll complain if the roads aren't plowed).

I really regret picking this up, I don't regret putting it down.

2 out of 5 stars Started out ok, but devolved into a worthless piece of crap........2004-12-18

When starting this book, I thought the premise looked pretty interesting and I had read other things by Hogan, so I thought it might be pretty good.

It started out a little slow, but once it got going, it seemed like it was going to be ok. Several times there were plot developments that made me think, this is really going to pick up now, but it never really did. Fairly early on in the story, I thought of something that I thought would have been an interesting twist for the end, but later events led me to discard it as a possibility. However, when I got to the end, what I had thought of did turn out to be the twist. Even though events in the story made it difficult. Which was made worse by an entire section of the book that tried to explain how the events unfolded without offering anything of value to the story. Add to this a protagonist who was completely discarded halfway through the story, an abrupt unsatisfying ending, and you get a pretty worthless book.

I wouldn't recommend this book. If you want to read something by Hogan, try Inherit the Stars instead.

5 out of 5 stars P.K. Dick, eat your heart out.......2004-11-16

I completely enjoyed this book. Its a story like Total Recall
with strange twists of personality exchange, but gripping from
start to finish. Its also an interesting future, where the US is
a totalitarian state and eastern europe a libertarian utopia
(hence the Prometheus award the book won, which honors best
libertarian fantasy). The political elements are believable
and don't hit you over the head. The plot does.

    4 out of 5 stars Good sci-fi book.......2004-07-31

This book is a good sci-fi read. It has a bleak vision of the future in where America has adopted an almost 1984 Orwell feel to it and freedoms are routinely violated all in the name of protecting resources and believe it or not, Asia and Russia are the the lands of opportunity. Throw in a dab of mystery and government intrigue and a man with amnesia and five months missing from his life and you have a great story.

This is the first book I have read from this author and I am looking forward to reading more. I recommend this novel to anyone who likes mystery and sci-fi.

4 out of 5 stars Multiplex Man is outstanding.......2002-09-21

As most of the other reviews have noted, James P. Hogan here presents a somewhat unevenly written story. However, that being said, there is a class of reader (such as I) that really appreciates clever sf and surprising plot twists.

Multiplex Man does have its moments of annoying polemics so frequent in Hogan's work. However, the incredible entertainment of this book easily makes reading it well worth while. Towards the end I couldn't put it down; the adventure was so exciting, the explanations so satisfying.

If you have difficulty finding this out-of-print book, a little Web searching can reward you with this gem.

        Book Description

This story begins on the subtropical island of Mauritius where a rare stamp is discovered. The owner returns to London, has the stamp expertized and then plans to personally deliver it to the Gallery auction house in Washington D.C. Word travels quickly through the world-wide philatelic community. Some collectors of rare stamps begin conniving to buy it from the owner before it is auctioned. The climax takes place when the characters below intersect at the Gallery - like Rick's American Cafe - only to find the stamp has been cleverly snatched. In pursuit of her hobby, Virginia Couvert visits a prestigious auction house to view the exhibit of a newly discovered rare stamp, Mauritius #1, the one penny orange. She has entered the field of philately, populated mostly by men. A chance meeting there with Roger Essay, an engineer, sets the stage for adventure and romance.

Before the rare stamp is auctioned off, Stanley Roulette, whose collection of British stamps rivals the Queen's, must get this stamp to complete his collection. Andre Setenant dashes to the U.S. auction to add this rarity to his collection of errors.

When the rare stamp is cleverly snatched from the auction house, Roger is drawn into a web of mystery that shrouds the theft. His extraordinary computer skill becomes the key to solving the mystery of the stolen stamp. He must also find out if the beautiful and elusive collector he ardently pursues is the thief herself.

Romance, mystery, and intrigue surround the action in the novel, from the discovery of the one penny orange on the remote Indian Ocean Island of Mauritius to its disappearance at the Gallery in Washington DC.

Stamps are now respectable collectibles. Prices of rare stamps are comparable to prices for paintings and antiques. A Swedish stamp with a color error recently sold at auction for $2.3 million. The rarest of all Hawaiian stamps, a 2-cent Missionary sold for $660,000. That stamp, incidentally, was featured in the movie "Charade," with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

              Description:
Global Internet traffic growth continues to create a bandwidth demand in the telecommunications network. As 100 Mb/s Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet LANs are widely installed in enterprises, Intranet bandwidth grows quickly. With the active adoption of ADSL and cable modem broadband accesses in the SOHO and residential markets, these markets generate more data traffic as well. Current telecom carriers predominately use SONET/SDH equipment to 'aggregate' data traffic in the MAN network (Metropolitan Area Network) before accessing the Internet backbone network. Because of the intrinsic limitations of SONET/SDH equipment in transporting data traffic, especially in terms of bandwidth scalability and provisioning efficiency, there is a need to find a broadband access solution that can overcome these drawbacks. The emergence of Gigabit Ethernet technology provides benefits that the SONET/SDH equipment lacks. However, Gigabit Ethernet also presents some shortcomings. The deployment of different access technologies leads to different implications and byproducts. The purpose of this paper is to help telecom carriers evaluate and plan their future broadband MAN access strategy by employing the fuzzy MCDM method. An empirical formula can rationally examine the practicability and usefulness of this method. Results revealed that SONET/SDH technology scored higher than Gigabit Ethernet technology with regards to MAN access for future broadband service.

                Book Description

The Anchor Bible offers new, book-by-book translations of the Old and New Testarnents and Apocrypha, with commentary.  This volume on The Wisdom of Solomon as been prepared by David Winston, Professor of Hellenistic and Judaic Studies and Director of the Center for Judaic Studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California.

The Wisdom of Solomon is a long and subtly poetic work placed in the mouth of "wise" King Solomon.  It blends biblical thought and Middle Platonism.  David Winston thoroughly analyzes the book, presenting the philosophical situation clearly and putting forth evidence to suggest that the work was written later than is commonly supposed, during the reign of Caligula (A.D. 37-41), and by a single author.

Because of its exclusion from the canon of scripture used by Jews and Protestant Christians, The Wisdom of Solomon has been neglected by biblical scholars in general.  Dr. Winston's commentary is the first to thoroughly cover both previous research and recent developments such as the Qumran scrolls, papyrus discoveries in Egypt, and new knowledge of ancient Iranian religion.  It is a major contribution to the study of the apocryphal literature of the Bible.

4 out of 5 stars The best of the Apochrypha, well researched.......2007-09-09

This is the most fascinating of the apochryphal literature, I think, and Winston does a great job with it. I must confess that the Anchor series is my favorite commentary series. I would love to see an "Anchor Bible" - a whole Bible of these great translations, with great footnotes.
Winston sees a great deal of Neo-Platonism in the text. This might be debatable and might not sit with everyone but I think he may be at least partly on track. At any rate, the book will give you much to chew on. I quote him in my book Bible Shockers! (bibleshockers.com) where he gives the background of an obscure passage in Job 10:10.

                3 out of 5 stars Good scholarship on a not-so good text.......2000-07-23

Of all the Apocrypha, I must say the most forgettable may be the Wisdom of Solomon. The Platonizing of Judao-Christian religion was VERY detrimental to it's spiritual growth, and sadly; this document was a big contributer. However, it's influence on the Catholic Church and Mariology is VERY interesting and so it deserves a look. Many points to the scholars who devoted great time and effort to getting to the bottom of this much misunderstood text.

Kitty Morse grew up in Casablanca, and through her extensive network of family and friends, she accumulated expertise in the cuisine of the entire Maghreb: Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco. In this part of the world, banquets called diffas are long affairs which include heaping platters of couscous, aromatic tagines or stews, and exquisitely spiced dishes like feather-light Bisteya, a kind of pie often filled with pigeon. Meat, fish, and poultry are eaten, but most of the time, meals center on legumes like lentils, grains, and heaps of vegetables. Some of these dishes require seasoning with preserved lemons, fiery harissa, or a Tunisian blend of ground coriander, caraway, garlic, and chili powder which is called Tabil. Morse opens by showing how to make them all. There are recipes for a meatless Harira, a delightful Cauliflower and Zucchini Salad, and Tunisian Mechwya. There are also grilled peppers, several crustless Tunisian quiches, Foul Mudamus, a stew of fava beans with olives, plus a variety of couscous dishes and breads. Vegetarians will appreciate the complex flavors and brilliant colors of North African food. Those who eat meat will not miss it, thanks to the rich aromas and satisfying heft of Morse's dishes. Photos by Deborah Jones display the beauty of this traditional cooking. Menus will help you organize memorable meals, and mail-order sources can supply needed ingredients wherever you live. --Dana Jacobi

5 out of 5 stars Inspires you to cook.......2004-10-14

Cookbooks seem to be the rage today. What used to be almost biblical - black text on white paper - has now transformed into stylish coffee table books that you wouldn't dream of bringing into an active kitchen. That's probably a good thing too; few of those recipes are very interesting or authentic. This book is very different. I still won't bring it into the kitchen, but I love to cook with it. The photography is beautiful and the recipes are excellent. Unique methods and ingredients are clearly described with substitutions for some of the more elusive kitchen gadgets or components. The recipes cover every meal and it should give you a good "taste" of North African cuisine.

This is a great cookbook. I'm so glad I bought it. It has a whole bunch of different couscous recipes, a number of moroccan tagines, appetizers that are quite yummy and salads. A variety of spices are used which lends itself to foods that have a nice depth of flavor. Each recipe has a brief intro that tells about the food and gives additional tips. Its a fun cookbook with great recipes. I highly recommend it!

This book covers some excellent Moroccan dishes, and is one of my favorite cookbooks. The Vegetarian Table is a terrific series of cookbooks for anyone who enjoys great food; including non-vegetarians.

I'm a professional vegetarian chef and with out a doubt this ranks as probably my favorite "ethnic" cookbook, if not just one of my all time favorite cookbooks in general.

5 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Book of Exotic Recipes.......1997-07-08

This is quite simply a beautiful book of wonderful Moroccan recipes written by a Moroccan-born American. Kitty Morse was born in Casablanca and now is a food and travel writer living in Southern California. Kitty has been returning to her homeland yearly to lead tours-- most recently a chef's tour of her favorite Moroccan restaurants. This book includes traditional Moroccan recipes that have been tailored to allow preparation in an American kitchen. The photography by Deborah Jones is first rate. From cous-cous to harira soup, this book will help those who are not vegetarians realize they're not missing anything

This is an essential book for anyone undertaking clay tile making. Many claim to be that essential book, but based on what is available in my local library, this one really is it. Her projects and those of a range of others included in the book are both great illustrations of the many processes involved and useful for stimulating the creative ideas of her readers.
I'm sick of renewing my library copy. I'm gonna buy my own.

The techniques represented were unique. There were many examples of other clay artists works. Ms. Pozo presented step by step photo processing for each technique. She started with clay basics and moved forward through firing ranges, shrinking, warping, cracking and glazes. She gave excellent usable information on the installation processes.

4 out of 5 stars Good solid reference book.......2005-05-19

This book has a little of everything. If you are just starting out in tile-making it would be an excellent choice. There are a LOT of different decorating techniques, and a very wide range of applications. The book is laid out well, with plenty of photos, so you can see finished examples of the techniques being described in the text below on the page. It would be an excellent beginner-to-novice book.

Personally, I prefer Frank Giorgini's "Handmade Tiles", because it has more technical information, glaze recipes, firing information, etc., but if I were starting out to make tiles on my own and taking them elsewhere for firing, I think Pozo's book would be a better choice.

Included are color photos of great examples of beautiful hand-decorated tiles, vintage and contemporary, of a myriad of styles, some complex, some simple, but all compelling. And there's plenty of detailed how-to information to get you started in the craft or advancing from where you might be now. Even includes information about constructing your own tile making tools.

Out of curiosity I picked up Frank's book from the library and of all the ones I've looked at on how to create artistic tiles, his is the best. He made a rank newbie like me believe I could actually do this and make them pretty to boot! I really appreciate the wide range of techniques he presented, charts and recipes, and I'm REALLY appreciative of all the instructions he includes to make the very tools that he uses to make his masterpieces. My only regret is that I don't live closer to him so I can learn from the master in person. I may have to change that. *grin*

                        Book Description

Beautiful, durable, and versatile, tiles have been a popular form of decoration for over2,000 years. Today, mass-produced tiles are widely available, but those made in the traditions of ancient times are the ones that really capture the imagination. Now, in The Handmade Tile Book, you can select from20 original projects, ranging from simple picture tiles to more complex, richly colored tile borders, plaques, and panels. Whatever your level of expertise, there are projects and ideas that will appeal. Choose from an array of styles, colors, textures, and motifs: a handsome terracotta garden panel, an Edwardian checkerboard or jazzy geometric border, or delicate designs in the tradition of Delftware. Expert Liza Gardner advises on the different types of clays and their properties; mixing and applying glazes; drying and firing; and techniques like sprigging, incising, and sgraffito. With its clear, concise instructions, enhanced with inspiring color photographs, The Handmade Tile Book will appeal to both experienced potters and to aspiring ceramists drawn to this age-old craft. Liza Gardner's previous book is Pottery and Ceramics.
