Book Description
A novel of babies and friendship, mothers and fathers, and the havoc of procreation.
Brooke and Mary Rose are best friends. Brooke is the mother of a six-month-old. Mary Rose is pregnant. Brooke is married to Lyle, though, at times, she wonders why. Mary Rose would be married if Ward, the father of her child, weren't already. Ward and Brooke are cousins... A comedy of manners and biology, Karbo gives us a laugh-out-loud look at the wonders of pregnancy and motherhood. It is a world where the women are fierce and strong and the men duck and cover; a world that is turned upside down when the expecting mother turns out a most unexpected child. Motherhood Made a Man Out of Me celebrates the courage and strength of women and the bonds that join them "in the motherhood."
Customer Reviews:
Karbo is the man! (I mean, mom).......2005-08-25
It took me a couple of chapters to get into this book, but by chapter three I was hooked and loving every minute of it. Karen Karbo weaves a hilarious and sometimes bittersweet and melancholy tale about motherhood, and the dynamics between men and women. She has got a rare ability with the turn of a phrase. Her characters were rich, and her plot was full - everything I appreciate in a novel that also provided smart humor and wise observations. I am looking forward to more Karen Karbo!
Now I get it!.......2004-02-07
I read this book a few months before I became pregnant with my now two-and-a-half year old son. Then, I recently read it again as a mother of a toddler. I really liked the book then, but now I identify with Brooke much more. This is an excellent depiction of motherhood and how it changes women's lives drastically. True, Brooke's voice is frequently reveling in martyrdom, but she also accurately depicts the indescribable love and fear felt by a new mother. While her husband is a bit of the stereotypical loser of a man (I would have thrown him out within weeks of the birth), the ending brings hope that he will reform soon.
I always tell expectant first-time mothers that they cannot possibly even begin to understand how simultaneously joyous and difficult motherhood is until the baby is born. (I think that it takes a little longer than that for most dads, and for husbands like Lyle it takes much longer.) My perspective of reading this book twice- before pregnancy and again after having a kid- confirms this for me. Some of us are more shell-shocked than others, but are lives are never the same- for the better!
Humorous light tale that is laugh out loud witty.......2002-02-09
A great read if you are looking for something light to read. The author weaves the trying tests of motherhood into this story; her humorous perspective on situations all mothers have encountered will make you laugh out loud!
As a reader you may miss many nuances if you are not a mother or have not spent a significant amount of time around children. But if you know what it's like to care for an infant and attempt to maintain your sanity....you will love this book!
A lively and funny tribute to motherhood..........2001-12-27
If ever a statement was more true, Motherhood Made a Man Out of Me is it! I enjoyed this hilarious novel about the anxieties of pregnancy, the fears of labor and birth, and the joys and trials of being a mother. And while this book may be perfect for mothers who have "been there, done that", I believe anyone, mother or not, who enjoys a good, funny story with nice surprises at the end will love this book.
Brooke is a new mother of 6-month-old Stella when she finds out her best friend, Mary Rose, is pregnant. Mary Rose, a successful landscaper and very independent, single woman, has the typical fears that most mothers-to-be experience. And while being in love with and pregnant by Brooke's cousin, Ward Baron, doesn't seem like such a bad idea, having the bizarre, wealthy, pretentious Baron clan as in-laws and grandparents is another thing all together. Sparks fly throughout the pregnancy regarding marriage, parenthood and grandparents' rights and culminate with a delicious twist at the end.
Looking for laughs? This book will provide! Motherhood Made a Man Out of Me is a gem, loaded with priceless wisecracks and situations that will have readers rolling. You don't have to be a mother to enjoy this book. Any reader who loves to laugh will definitely be entertained. Highly recommended for a light, fun read or to lift a blue mood.
Very funny, very real..........2001-12-09
I read this book just before my son was born, and laughed my (...) off! Its so absolutely dead on with respect to the strange transitional period between pregnancy and early motherhood, and such a fun story! (...)Pregnancy, labor, deliver and postpartum hormones make you insane. The infantilized treatment of men in this story might be off-putting to some, but it really only serves to underscore that women really, truly go through the journey toward becoming a mother alone. It makes for a funny story, as you can imagine. Definately read this one!

"It's called the Mal'eb'dala, The Book of the Shadows".......2005-01-22
In Crypt of the Shadowking, Caledan Caldorien, a former Harper finds himself involved in trying to save the city of Iriaebor and its citizens from the sinister Zhentarim, led by his dead fiancés sister. Together with Mari Al'maren, an active Harper, and his old adventuring companions from the Fellowship of the Dreaming Dragon, he sets out to spoil the villain's plans.
The book is very well written, and the reader feels that they have been transported to another universe and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense.
On the negative side, HOW did a city like Iriaebor, City of a Thousand Spires, fall so easily and quietly under the control of the Zhentarim and WHY did the city's prominent/powerful citizens not put up so much as a fight for over a year, when it was evident as to who Lord Ravendas was, not to mention the presence of Zhents among (actually dominating) the military/city guard?
Moreover, where is the outside intervention that would surely come if and when a city the caliber of Iriaebor ever fell to the Black Network? Crusades would be undertaken to expel the Keep's agents from the City.
The only resistance comes from a Thieves' Guild and the Harpers, with the latter using "green" Mari, and "uncooperative" Calderon?
By no means does this make Curse of the Shadowmage a bad book; the plot, the writing and the characters are very well thought out and presented!
The story of Verraketh, the sorcerer, who becomes the Shadowking, along with the Nightstone, with which he "meant to gain sway over the spirits of men and bring countless realms under his dire rule" (Pp150) are GREAT.
Moreover, the Shadevar was an interesting addition to the story.
Zhents, assassins, love, duty, honor, bravery, magic, and swordfights are all about.
Strongly recommended along with Mark Anthony's Curse of the Shadowmage, which is the sequel to Crypt of the Shadowking, as well as The Shadow Stone by Richard Baker for a good dose of Shadow Magic.
A good story but not very memorable........2003-10-20
I really thought this book was well written with a good plot and characters. Unfortunately, it seemed to lack something that would otherwise have made it stood out as superb. Caledan is a fascinating character who becomes entwined with Mari while investigating problems in the city of Iriaebor. One of the better novels in the Harper series but i'd only recommend it to other fans of the Forgotten Realms setting.
Worst TSR book I've ever read.......2000-01-30
While this book had an OK beginning, the imagination and original creativity of the book quickly went out the window. There is a scene where a thief is being hung, but his friends just waltz on by and free him from execution...not a bad idea, but I saw it first in the movie "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves". And then the readers discover that the thief has a distinct personality which is none-too-subtlely ripped-off from the thief Silk in David Edding's books. I am abhorred that TSR actually published this book which barely retains a shred of true originality.
Action-packed high fantasy adventure won't disappoint........1999-02-14
This is a very entertaining, well-constructed novel. There is never a dull moment in Caledan and Mari's battle against the Zhentarim for control of the city of Iraiebor, from Caledan's unwelcome return to the city, rife with evil, to an all-out battle and just slightly predictable conclusion, as Caledan and an accompanying band of heroes race the Zhentarim's evil agents to discover the secret of the shadow magic. It's a page-turner, with chapters more often than not ending on cliffhangers. The book has its share of surprises, and the characters are introduced slowly and developed well. I found myself rooting for the main character, Caledan, to succeed and to "get the girl" Mari, which should happen considering this a tightly-plotted, quick moving novel focusing mainly on Caledan and his exploits as he reluctantly tries to wrest the city from evil's grasp. Anyone who just wants to have a good time reading an excellent adventure novel should try this. It leaves you wanting a sequel, or even a trilogy.
An excellent addtion to the Harpers series.......1999-02-09
This is a wonderful tale by Mark Anthony, ranking up there with the best Realms stories of Salvatore and Cunningham. The characterization is very good, and, as each character is introduced gradually, you get a good feel for their personalities. The writing style is smooth and flows very well from chapter to chapter; it's one of those compulsive reads you end staying up till 3:00 AM reading! The story itself is strong and imaginative, and while the climax is just a bit predictable, nevertheless it builds very well to an exciting conclusion. There is also a nice denouement, which ties up loose ends very well, something that not all Forgotten Realms authors are good at doing. Highly recommended, both for veteran readers of the Realms and fantasy in general, as well as newcomers!

great imagination.......2007-04-24
I know that Starhammer is not great literature but it is a thrilling story for traditional science fiction readers. Rowley creates an interesting, if frightening, future for humanity. However, the scale of time referred to in the novel spans a billion years, long before humans existed. Somewhat like in the Warhammer series. He also creates one of the most frightening alien life forms I have read about in science fiction, the Vang. I always thought that it was a shame that Rowley didn't develop this theme to more than the three books he wrote on the subject of the Vang and the Laowan. His Founder series was good but I found the Dragon theme less interesting. Like other reviewers here I have read Starhammer several times over the years and it is definitely one of my favourites.
Great book all around!.......2006-03-08
This whole series is completely suspenseful, and this book definately sets the stage!
I found this book as I was looking for more information on the Halo backstory. Everything I was reading was saying that the developers borrowed pretty heavily from this series and they were definately right. Don't get me wrong, they are NOT the same story. There are just a lot of similarities, which in my mind is a good thing.
A word of warning, though... Don't read this book unless you have a whole day to spend; once you pick it up, it's got you!
Read. This. Book. Now........2005-08-19
IF you like Halo, then you will love this book. I cannot emphasize this more.
The people at Bungie who created Halo are such obvious fans of this book its not even funny.
Things from Halo that are based/similar from Starhammer:
-John(Master Chief)
-Covenent
-Flood
-343 Guilty Spark
-Halo(The weapon part of it)
-Cortana
-There's more, I'm sure
All time favourite.......2004-05-05
I first read this book many years ago after purchasing it along with a bunch of others at a secondhand book stall. I've read it many times since and never get tired of doing so. Just a sensational story that deserves to be made into a blockbuster of a film. If you love sci fi and haven't read this book yet then do so without any delay. It doesn't matter if you have to beg, borrow or steal the money to buy the book - just do so. You'll be all the richer for having done so!
Old but still exciting.......2004-03-26
This book is one of my dumpster diving finds from almost 15 years ago. It has no cover and is about the most damaged book I own.
But, I treat it as best I can, considering I have read it at least twice every year since I found it. It is a detailed trip into a bleak future, where mankind is saved long before it ever reached the stars.
The book has some technical flaws, and the pacing changes through the story, but for all that it presents ideas and visions with clarity and imagination. I would love a story about the long past heros of the novel.
The plusses of the book significantly outweigh the minuses. The heros are thinking, feeling beings, the villans obviously think a different way, and the true villan turns out to be much scarier than expected. Plus, its smart.
In all this is a very exciting and fast paced (mostly) book that is a vision of redemption.

The Fourteen Dalai Lamas.......2007-03-09
This a great read for anyone interested in The Dalai Lama, Tibetan Buddhism, and / or Tibetan history. A great and informative read!
With a forward by his holiness, the fourteenth Dalai Lama.......2001-08-16
With a forward by his holiness, the fourteenth Dalai Lama, Glenn Mullin's The Fourteen Dalai Lamas: A Sacred Legacy Of Reincarnation showcases the sacred mythology associated with six hundred years of the Dalai Lamas who stood as the principal spiritual leaders of Central Asia. here is to be found a magnificently presented spiritual and political history of these amazing men who stood as gurus and spiritual advisors to Mongolian Khans and Chinese emperors, as well as the millions of peoples inhabiting the dozens Central Asian kingdoms spread over more than half a millennium. The Fourteen Dalai Lamas is an essential, core addition to any personal, academic, or community library collection on Buddhist history, beliefs, and biographies.
History of the Dalai Lamas.......2001-07-19
Glenn Mullin has written several books on Tibetan Buddhism, biographies of several Dalai Lamas, has been trained in Tibetan Buddhism by many senior spiritual masters and has known the current 14th Dalai Lama since the 1970's. With this as a basis he has produced the first history of the Dalai Lamas, in terms of them as an institution, as a beacon of spiritual leadership as well as showing the unique personalities of the Dalai Lamas and their close associates. This remarkable work should be of interest to anyone who likes a great story, whether they are Buddhists or not, religious or not. It shows a view of Tibetan history from the political intrigues of medieval Asia, the Great Game of Britain and Russia, to the genocide of Tibetans and their culture at the hands of the Communist Chinese. Its a fascinating look at one of the world's great spiritual traditions. It provides insight into one of the world's great tragedies - the refusal of the Chinese government to allow the Tibetan people their right to self determination. And it shows that the Dalai Lama is a not only a supreme credit to the Tibetan Race - but to the Human Race.

Just like grandma used to make........2001-04-13
My aunt gave me a copy of this book one year for Christmas, and I've found it is the one of the only cookbooks I ever consult. I grew up eating Lebanese food and have come to appreciate it more by cooking all the things my mom never had time to teach me how to make. This is a great book for those who grew up with this cuisine, as well as those interested in trying out healthy "Mediterranean" cooking.
Grandma's cookbook.......2000-03-28
I am so filled with joy when I saw this cookbook at your site. It is the same one(11th edition) that my grandmother has cooked from for years. She is not lebanese, but my grandfather is and he loves her cooking. It has your basic kibbe, tabouli, and hummus recipes, as well as more complex and wondeful recipes. I have ordered it and would like to thank you once again, this is the best Lebanese cookbook made...and ya'll have it...thanks!

George Stella's Livin' Low Carb has little in common with diet books: In fact, it's got more in common with a cookbook you might have bought for yourself when you first moved out on your own. The style is casual and approachable, with no tense lists of diet-related details or overly-complex recipes, and cooking techniques require little more than a working stove and a frying pan.
George Stella (along with pastry chef-wife Rachel) have developed a wide range of recipes designed to compliment Atkins and other low-carb diet regimens. Rather than relying on packaged convenience foods that meet these dietary standards, they focus on home-cooked meals that satisfy the demands of low carb life without tasting like they were baked up in a factory. Flavors include Chinese (Szechuan stir-fry), Italian-American (clams casino), Southern (fried chicken), and American sweets (chocolate chip muffins and no-bake Key lime cheesecake). Snacks, salads, entrees, and desserts all see equal amounts of attention.
There's a heavy reliance on the sugar substitute Splenda, but in general this is real food for daily life. The condiment chapter contains homemade versions of ketchup, mustard sauce, barbecue sauce and even Thousand Island dressing, and makes a simple place to get started even if the only kitchen appliance you're comfortable with is a can opener. Each recipe clearly notes "special equipment" (like 8-inch square pans) as well as the yield, net carbs per serving, and separate times needed for prepping and cooking.
Because of the sugar substitute and number of recipes that alter classics in ways that compromise traditional textures in favor of lowering carbs (such as noodle-free lasagna), the book is most likely to be used by dieters, rather than all home cooks. Still, if you're looking for easy ways to tinker with your food intake that doesn't involve packaged mixes from the diet industry, Stella offers plenty of tasty options. --Jill Lightner

Wonderful book, the Tequilla Chicken is great have shared that recipe with other co-workers & they all says it is the best. Have tried many other low-carb recipes & they always are lacking something, Stella's recipes taste like the real thing.
great cookbook!.......2007-08-07
I love this book....I have other low carb cookbooks and I use and enjoy them as well, but when I make recipes out of this book I do not feel like I am using crazy things like pork rinds to bread my chicken. I never thought that I would actually enjoy eating anything made with soy flour, but I have loved every recipe I have made out of this book!
If you eat low carb, this book is for you.......2007-06-24
I have both the Stella cookbooks and use them, if not every day, at least every week. Many of his recipes have become favorites of mine and my guests. The ingredients are easy to find and easy to prepare. Food boredom can become a problem with low carb diets. There's nothing to be bored about in these cookbooks.
I LOVE THIS BOOK.......2007-06-21
This cookbook is chock full of fun and easy recipes! Most can be made in less than a half hour. All can be made with typical kitchen staples except for Soy Flour. Easy to find in any local health food store! Don't wait, buy this book and start feeling and looking better!
Awesome recipes, great taste!.......2007-06-11
The only downside i think is that this isnt a very low carb book. Some recipes have moderate carbs per serving.

"must have" cookbook, low carb or not.......2007-10-09
This cookbook is a must have whether you are low carbing it or not. It contains such a wide variety of recipes, not the same old low carb you've seen a hundred times. There are no weird ingredients and George's tips are wonderful. I was highly skeptical of the almond flour, but I tried it in the pumpkin muffins and they are terrific. My 12 year old son had no idea they were low carb! I also recommend the pork souvlaki with tzatziki sauce. It's so good!
Wonderful !!.......2007-09-29

Book Description
Enigmatic, retiring, and openly gay, Gus Van Sant is one of the best-known independent filmmakers. An active and honored director for two decades, noted for his rapport with actors, Van Sant nevertheless remains aloof from Hollywood, preferring to live and write in Portland, OR. Extensively researched, Gus Van Sant examines his career from the inauspicious debut Mala Noche to the haunting Drugstore Cowboy; from the angst-ridden My Own Private Idaho and the mainstream black comedy To Die For to the Oscar-nominated Good Will Hunting and the high-profile Finding Forrester. Van Sant remains committed to exploring themes of the outsider and presenting an idiosyncratic vision in an unobtrusive but compelling style. Equally important, under Van Sant¹s guidance many actors (Matt Dillon, River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, Nicole Kidman, Matt Damon, and acclaimed newcomer Robert Brown, whom Van Sant discovered) have done their best work. This is the first full-length biography of the Oscar nominated director.
Customer Reviews:
not as well researched as it could have been.......2003-11-18
There are a couple inaccuracies which could have been corrected had the author spoken with anyone in the alternative music scene in Portland (to which Mr. Van Sant is connected). The gender of the sound engineer of Male Noche is incorrect (Pat Baum is a woman, drummer of early punk band the NeoBoys, and former dj on KBOO radio), and Chris Monlux and Mike Quinn's collaboration is called MonQui Productions, not Monique Productions.
I was really enjoying this book, until the inaccuracies noted made me suspicious of what other errors might exist. I didn't finish it.
An Excellent Overview of Gus Van Sant's Life and Work.......2003-10-21
This comprehensive examination of Gus Van Sant's life and work is a valuable resource for both scholars and admirers. Highly recommended!
Another winner from Mr. Parish.......2002-03-06
This is a fascinating book about one of the best (relatively)young directors working. As usual, Mr. Parish has done his homework. The background material is great and helps give a really vivid picture of the person. I really feel I got to know Mr. Van Sandt from reading this book, not only him, but his family and associates growing up. The descriptions of his early works are especially interesting. Mr. Parish is one of the most thorough writers when it comes to work credits of his subjects. I also enjoy this section of his books. I definitely recommend this book.
Superb Parish.......2002-02-04
Parish does it again.
I've been a big fan of Jim Parish's cinematic oeuvre of literature for 20 years. He has tackled film genres, biographies and anything with his name on it I will buy. His "Van Sant" bio is terrific and covers a career that hasn't had much coverage to date.
If you can find Mr. Parish's incredible "The Swashbucklers" you have a great weekend read in store. After 100 books, you would think Parish would be tired but his two recent works proves he is as fresh as ever and on the top of his game.
Parish Does A Fine Job.......2002-01-19
James Robert Parish is one of the most prolific and knowledgeable film historians and writers around today, and his book on Van Sant lives up to his high standards of writing and research. Van Sant is an interesting character, going from art house (Mala Noche) to mainstream favorites (Good Will Hunting). This is definately a must-read for anyone who wants to know more about Van Sant and the movie making business of today.
