Book Description
Winner of the Low Fidelity press inaugural Novella Award, Next Door Lived a Girl is set in Wedersen, a working-class town in post-World War II Germany. It explores the dark transformation of young boys into young men. The town's veneer of peaceful industry barely conceals the ugly secrets that lie beneath. Moritz and his friends make a dangerous discovery that pulls them into a war with a rival gang, into the ruthless and cunning world of blackmail and consequence, and, ultimately, into a cascading series of events that will change the nature of their friendship, and their lives, forever. Written with an uncommon starkness and poetry, Next Door Lived a Girl is destined to find its place in the canon of great novellas alongside the likes of Harrison, Hemingway, and Roth.
Customer Reviews:
Next Door Lived a Girl.......2005-07-20
Next Door Lived a Girl is an intelligent, provocative story about a group of young boys and their exploits in Germany. It had real, in-depth characters, who are put into extraordinary, and complicated situations. Kiesbye's telling of the story is intriguing and very entertaining. I would recommend this book very highly.
Dark Intimacies Conveyed With Deft Perceptions.......2005-01-31
The writing in Stefan Kiesbye's perfectly pitched novella (its actually a short novel at 110 pages) is at once stark yet filled with wonderfully cast images and a story which draws the reader in from the first page. 'We are the Badgers. My name is Moritz. Thomas and I are the oldest. Johannes is the only boy whose father does not work at the candy factory. His family lives on the property of the slaughterhouse.' It is an oversimplification to say the story in NEXT DOOR LIVED A GIRL is one of incest and violence. There is ever so much more to this book; the narrative voice filled with compassion and care for even its bleakest characters. Set in working class Germany, the book is at once intimate to its time and landscape and transcendent of such, like a great fable. In my capacity as a writer and reviewer, my work is often complicated in that I can't help meeting and getting to know many other writers. I come clean then here and say that I have recently gotten to know Stefan Kiesbye. Those who know me, however, understand that I would never write a review for a friend if I did not truly find his work worthy. There is no question of this with Stefan's wonderful achievement in NEXT DOOR LIVED A GIRL.
Kiesbye's book is lithe and sharp.......2005-01-20
Stefan is my friend. That is fair to say up front. He and I have studied together, fought with each other and been good friends for a number of years. But that should in no way diminish the validity of this claim: I believe this novella is one of the finest pieces written in recent years.
An old hand at writing (Stephen King, no less) has said that a basic definition of art is that it gives back more than you give it. This is a useful definition in many ways, and Stefan's book is proof of the claim. 110 pages of terse, startling prose yields returns on par with equisitely rendered poetry. It is a stark landscape, not unlike the tightly wound world of Hitchcock's Psycho, and it will pay you back many times over for each moment you pay it by lingering with its words.
Customer Reviews:
A horrible book!.......2007-03-29
The art was ok and the writing was ok... however the plot was pathetic!!! It was one of the worst crafted books I have ever read. Batgirl and Robin fight to the "death" to get out of being trapped by the Penguin. Which while not very clever wasn't dumb... but then Robin shoots Batgirl supposedly in a non-vital area... err... what? After he shoots her they both leap up and fight there way to freedom. What? Why didn't you just do that in the firstplace? There wasn't any reason and now Batgirl has a sucking chest wound as they escape. They have officially run out of ideas and instead of trying to come up with something clever they decided to come up with something stupid. Like a mystery novel where the end solution had nothing to do with what happened in the book... if you like trite simple stories or are suffering from major brain damage this is a plot that you can really wrap your mind around. Otherwise... avoid this book like the plague.
Great Bat-Family Reading.......2006-10-11
I've liked Tim Drake as Robin ever since he came on the scene and saved Batman from The Scarecrow. I thought he was a cool Robin and he's really grown as a character.
I've liked Cassandra Cain as Batgirl ever since I picked up the first issue of her series mostly because he costume looked really cool (I love the whole stitched over mouthpiece thing)!
So putting them together in their own comic book (well, not really their own comic book but their own city), seems like a great idea! And it pays off. Paring the post-Identity Crisis/War Crimes Robin with Batgirl makes for a dark and great tale of loss and finding a way to move on. Fresh Blood is about hiding from all of the things that are bothering you and being surprised when those things follow you along just the same. We can't hide from our sorrows - they are part of us. And both Robin and Batgirl find this.
What I really liked was Robin's fight against becoming Batman! This characterization just goes further to prove how cool a character he really is! Add to that Batgirl's desire to be nothing but be exactly like Batman and... well, you got the makings of a whole lotta fun!
Pretty good.......2005-11-05
I thought that the book was really interesting how it went about explaining Batgirl's handicap with books. I know that Robin is younger than her, but at the end of the book they should've kissed. They were physically really close to eachother, they really should've kissed. Most of the pictures were good, but when they showed Robin's dad and girlfriends, that was messed up. I didn't like the drawer's style.
My opinion.

Book Description
This descriptive introduction to the world's religions provides an orientation to the study of religion, surveys the history of each of the major world religions, discusses the ways these religions respond to contemporary ethical issues, and reflects the future of religions in the 21st century. By providing worldviews of: indigenous religions (with case studies from Africa and North America), the religions of South and Southeast Asia (Hinduism, Theravada Buddhism, Jainism), religions of East Asia (Daoism, Confucianism, Mahayana Buddhism [Pure Land, Zen, Tibetan], Shinto), religions of the Middle East and beyond (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism); and representative new religious movements (The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness), The World's Religions presents a sympathetic perspective for each. Attention to religious responses to contemporary ethical issues (the ecological crisis, global economics, war, capital punishment, abortion, euthanasia, gender, and sexual orientation) places the religions in a twenty-first century context. Because it attempts to describe how religions answer basic human questions, this authoritative, lively, and informative book is an excellent introduction to the study of religions for any interested reader.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad for half the price of the best intros..........2007-05-22
Young's book works well if you are teaching a class on a budget, as it sells for half the price of the most-often-used scholarly intros to world religions used in the colleges and universities. For the price, it is a good deal. The very few pictures and complete absence of color plates is a money-saver. The basic info is usually sound, but there are exceptions. For instance, Young says Yin is the dragon and Yang is the tiger. I don't mind supplementing a textbook, but I dislike having to correct it. The structure is not optimum. For instance, splitting Theravada and Mahayana Buddhisms (with chapters on Jainism, Daoism, and Confucianism in-between) is not the most logical conceptual framework for an intro student. Dealing with Shinto after Mahayana is also not optimum. And so on... However, price is key for many, and in this case the price is right. All in all, this text works well for a teacher who can use the text as a launching point, supplement the info extensively, and at times, correct it.
Great!.......2007-03-09
This book is very excellent. It is very well written and explains everything completly. And, I can say from personal experience that Dr. Young knows what he is talking about, he is my professor.
Informative.......2007-02-15
This book was purchased for my Introduction to Religion Class. It is informative.

The only fish cookbook you'll ever need.......2001-11-24
If you go to the UK version of Amazon you'll find all sorts of information about this book. Let's face it, when it comes to fish, the British are far more on the ball the Americans. They live on the stuff.
The recipes in here are REALLY easy to do, with very clear instructions, and tasty!!! What really amazes me is that I'll find some odd kind of fish I've never heard of before for sale at the grocery store at a really cheap price so I buy it. I come home, I open this book and there are at least 5 different ways to prepare it. I look in some of my other fish cook books, and I'm lucky if I find even one recipe.
You have GOT to get this book!!!

Great photos, but not much biography on Mr. Beene..........2001-02-20
As this is one of the few books available on the artistry of Geoffrey Beene, it is both a welcome addition to the world of fashion-photography books and sadly, a very weak treatment of the how-and-why of his work. The photos are oversized and some are gate-folded, but there are not nearly enough to cover the breadth of more than 30 year's design that is Beene's history. He is and always will be apart from many American designers. His is a mixture of the ease/casual feel of sportswear, and at the same time, the epitome of the couturier/dressmaker's craft. Aerodynamic, sleek, modern, iconoclastic are just some of the words used to describe his vision. However, the publisher neglected to go into greater detail as to why Beene is described as such. It would have been helpful to read of his early days working in Paris couture workrooms picking up pins and assisting with the production of toiles. Such is one of the many stories that surround the Beene legend. The quotations from Beene himself are somewhat informative, but someone should write a definitive biography of his life and work in greater detail. A nice book to look at, but not much more.
Great photos, horrible text........1998-10-28
I'm surprised that Booklist calls the text of this book "witty and informative." I found the text to be the major weakness of the book. It's vague, rambling, and completely UNinformative. I didn't learn about Beene's background, education, training, or business. All I got was a lot of fashion-speak garble about his brilliance and genius. The writing is just really, really bad.
The most interesting part of the book is the final section, which is entirely quotes from Beene himself. The photos are lovely, but 120 is too few to give a good overview of Beene's work; he has been designing for 30+ years and must have designed hundreds or even thousands of garments by now. This book shows too few of them.
Overall, this book was disappointing.

Michelin Guide Espagne/Portugal 2007
Customer Reviews:
Must have for visiting Spain.......2007-02-21
I am a professional chef who: loves Spain; specializes in modern Spanish cuisine; visits often; needs accurate professional information about restaurants and hotels. I buy this book every year.
I also own many of Michelin's other guides. This is definitely the most accurate. Their Spanish reviewers are spot-on: if the book says it is good...it is good. Well, 90% of the time....which is all you can ask for.
The accuracy of the book extends all the way from the least expensive restaurants, tapas bars, agroturismos and hotels to the most expensive.
Michelin is a big organization...and moves slowly. Many of the tiny, up and coming places are missed....thank god. I don't want a bunch of tourists clogging up the good spots!
Just kidding.....
And....as for the other reviewer who was mad that the book was in Spanish.....Duh! The title is in Spanish, dummy! And, why are you going to Spain if you don't speak Spanish? There is an English section at the front to explain everything.
The reviewer also complained that 80% of the book was about Spain. Well, Spain has by far the best, most modern, most advanced, most creative food in the world....along with the best ingredients.
So....why are you going to Portugal?
Looking for Portugal Information.......2007-02-16
I was looking for information for a trip to Portugal but the book is about 80% Spain and 20% Portugal. It also is not in English. It was helpful but not as much as I expected.

Offers a rare view into the world of a Zulu shaman
• Includes 14 Zulu myths as told by a traditional Zulu story keeper
• Reveals Zulu shamanic practices, including healing techniques, dreamwork, oracles, prophecy, and interactions with star beings
In this rare window into Zulu mysticism, Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa breaks the bonds of traditional silence to share his personal experiences as a sangoma—a Zulu shaman. Set against the backdrop of post-colonial South Africa, Zulu Shaman relays the first-person accounts of an African healer and reveals the cosmology of the Zulu.
Mutwa begins with the compelling story of his personal journey as an English-trained Christian schoolteacher who receives a calling to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps as a shaman and keeper of folklore. He then tells the stories of his ancestors, including creation myths; how evil came to the world; the adventures of the trickster god Kintu; and Zulu relations with the “fiery visitors,” whom he likens to extraterrestrials. In an attempt to preserve the knowledge of his ancestors and encourage his vision of a world united in peace and harmony, Mutwa also shares previously guarded secrets of Zulu healing and spiritual practices: including the curing power of the sangoma and the psychic powers of his people.

zulu shamanism.......2005-01-06
Here we get a fascinating account of how a Zulu shaman gets called to his profession and what healing and divination entail in the context of South African native healers (sangomas). Mutwa brings in details that I haven't seen anywhere else... for example, how divination bones, the essential aspect of sangoma art, are obtained and how a combination of plants and energy are used in healing mentally and physically sick people. He talks about ancient power objects held in storage by his tribe and about the knowledge, accumulated by his tribe of hundreds of years, of the alternate reality that one can encounter in the bush. Above all, this book allows one to one witness the sophistication of the Zulu, including their techniques for training and retraining the initiate's perception and awareness.
This is a valuable book.

Presenting powerful stories and myths of creation; how his ancestors came to the world; tales of gods and evil beings; and visions to promote peace and harmony, Zulu Shaman is a unique work of spiritual insight and Zulu mysticism which is an invaluable contribution to African Metaphysical Studies reference collections and reading lists.
