Book Description
ONCE UPON A TIME, before Atheneum in New York took a chance on an unknown author and published "Staggerford" (1977), Jon Hassler wrote a number of short stories that introduce many of the characters in his later novels. Only a handful of these stories had appeared in print (mostly in small literary magazines) until Afton Historical Society Press published the best-selling RUFUS AT THE DOOR and KEEPSAKES.
RUFUS AT THE DOOR is also available in handbound Collector Editions, limited to fifty signed and numbered copies in slipcases, priced at $175.00.
Customer Reviews:
Rufus at the Door.......2001-05-11
Hassler captures meaningful things in life that we don't always notice and shares them beautifully in this book. The stories can be related to the simplicity of life yet some have unexpected twists making them interesting to read. It's neat how some of the stories tie into one another.

A thousand years before the Winter War, two sworn enemies each set forth to find the warhammer that could challenge their most terrible foes. But neither of them could know of the perils that lay ahead-perils to life, and limb, and heart.
Customer Reviews:
A solid, satisfying novel.......2006-07-25
I suppose I should begin this review by citing that many of the previous reviewers are correct in their assessments of this book: it is tragic, it is touching, and it consists of many flashbacks and a lot of time and setting changes. It also exists in a universe which holds some parallels to that of Tolkien and LoTR, though many key differences also exist. All in all, for a true Tolkien fan, it may trigger strange and warped feelings; for a McKiernan fan, this book is by far the best of his Mithgar series.
The story centers around a pair of enemies forced to collaborate on grounds of mutual gain; because the depth of their backstories, the flashbacks are frequent and varied, and indeed disorienting at times. I would state, however, that the said flashbacks are not overly confusing, and each is labeled clearly with time and setting at its beginning.
After the resolution of all of the backstories, the novel continues relatively linearly, telling a tale of well-developed and touching characters. The style is maintained in high prose, and there are also many philosophical and ethical questions addressed through the course of this work. With scenes devoted to active battle, romance, discussion, and emotional conflict... this novel has the potential to captivate readers of all tastes.
Too obvious source.......2006-04-19
Elgo=Fram
Sleeth=Scatha
Vanadurin= Eotheod
Chakka shok=Baruk Khazad... and many more.
LOL in tolkien original's tale, Fram just gives the dwarves a necklace made of Scatha's teeth,in this tale elgo gives them a bag made of Sleeth's skin (resulting in his death, killed by the dwarves). Too similar in my humble opinion. Some writers should learn to hide their sources better. I enjoyed the book anyway,i liked the main plot where Throk and Elyn have to overhelm the hate their races had to each other. The source of the hate between Chakka and Vanadurin is just blatantly copied from Tolkien.
Having read all 25 previous comments i must say i deeply disagree with those who want to compare this writer with Tolkien whose creations go far beyond from simple storytelling. If you want just a tale (not bad written and enjoyable) this is a book for you. If you want a real universe based on a lot of ancient legends and saga from western world put together by richly developed languages, a universe which took a life for his author to create, just stick to Tolkien.
Sorry for my english.
Still Thieving from Tolkien.......2006-03-27
The entire story of this book was lifted from an appendix to the Lord of the Rings. It is found in the appendix section dealing with the history of the Rohirrim. This McKiernan dude is incapable of writing anything worth reading. If you've finished reading LOTR and you want to read something else similar... just read LOTR again. Seriously.
Grat Book!!.......2005-04-07
I was searching my highschool library and came across this book. I have a slight obsession with dragons, so this one did catch my eye. At first, I didn't get into it, but after the first 10 or so pages, I really got into it. I haven't read any other books by this author, but I have to say this one is a must read!
derrick Stahl's "Dragondoom" Review.......2004-12-04
Elyn (human) and Thork (dwarf) search for a magic war-hammer to kill a dragon that is tormenting both of their homelands.
Story - 3 out of 5 (Standard "small group searches for something to save the day" story. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's done a lot. The grade is for a few very clichéd "love" parts. A poem at the beginning of the book, which is meant to be heart wrenching, caused me to laugh out loud. The book is claimed to be a "love story," but the "love" sections are written too corny to be taken seriously. The novel switches between "the present" and "the past" every two dozen pages or so, but it's done in a way that actually adds to the reading experience.)
Style - 4 out of 5 (His long, period-needing sentences take about 25 pages to get used to. But once you learn how to read Mr. McKiernan's run-ons, the pages really start to come alive.)
---
Sex - 1 out of 5 (A single kiss and a nude scene, but nothing descriptive.)
Violence - 4 out of 5 (War, war, and more war. There is also a fair amount of one-on-one fighting.)
Blood / Gore - 3 out of 5 (Brief descriptions of dead bodies and skin / bodily disfigurations.)
Language - 2 out of 5 (A few bad words here and there, but nothing to cry about.)
---
Overall - 5 out of 5 (Despite its minor setbacks, "Dragondoom" is one of the best titles I've read this year. I recommend it to everyone.)

Alone at the center of a cosmic apocalypse, Nick Seafort must face his final battle . . .And his most unforgivable sin.
Customer Reviews:
The series has gone in the toilet........2005-05-04
The last three books were very good, even with the transpop characters thrown in. The first half of this one is interesting in depicting academy life. The bizarre gay references come out of 'left' field and don't belong. Furthermore I finally gave up a little past halfway because it completely dissolves itself into 'trannie' culture in New York and is just too unbelieveably stupid to have kept my interest. The absolute worst in any of these books is when Seafort tries to talk like a tranny or understand them, it's just total crap.
Belay that whining, Seafort!.......2003-09-25
I must say that by this point in the Seafort Saga, Seafort's whining is just getting to be too much. Admitedly, he has reason to whine - he is the most improbably unlucky man in the universe. Everything that can be dumped onto him is, and by the time I was done this volume, I had had quite enough. Once again Seafort behaves badly to save the day - for the third book in a row (though his "damning" behaviour in Challeger's Hope is really just a problem in his own head, IMHO).
So while this one was not a favorite, the series is still worth sticking with - Voices of Hope is very good, and has far less of Nick Seafort in it, and none of his guilt-ridden internal dialogue.
More angst-ridden adventure with Nick Seafort.......2000-07-29
If there's one thing you can say about the Hope series, it's that Feintuch manages to grow the characters but still manages to keep their basic premises intact. Nicholas Seafort's ongoing quest for honor and redemption continues here where he becomes an instructor at the Lunar academy where he earned his commission. The story is gripping and the final outcome was not what I expected at all. Great stuff!
Terrific.......2000-05-23
This is the Gadfather Part II of the series. In this book we see flashbacks of Nick's life and time in the academy, we also learn how his father raised him. Nick is now the head of the naval academy. An attack by Nick's alien adversaries causes him to take immediate action. But the only way he can fight them, is with the help of his cadets. The ending of Nick's journal is especially moving.
Just when you think the guilt can't get deeper..........2000-02-18
A great book that pulls you in. If you read the series consectutively, you'll wonder what kind of situation could be worse in the next book than what Seafort has done in the present book. And how Feintuch can pull it off. But he does, and Seafort's hold on sanity just comes that much looser.
Seafort's flashbacks flows from past to present smoothly, and there's always a connection there. You learn more about his past than you do in the previous books. And there's also a twist on the end that's sure to suprise suprise. It may (or may not) make you look at the the previous series a bit differently.

A guide to helping Gen-Xers reconnect with spirituality and faith in their lives today. Describes the lifelong process of discovering both God and self and explains that for the typical young adult, loss of faith is a necessary part of maturing spirituality.
Customer Reviews:
An Interesting Look at Young Adult Catholic Spirituality.......2003-11-09
LOSING YOUR RELIGION/FINDING YOUR FAITH, a book by Paulist priest Brett Hoover, presents relevant information regarding young adult spirituality. Hoover is qualified to write this work for two reasons. First, he has worked with young adults as a college campus minister. Second, he is also young himself and has personally navigated the "spiritual roadmap" he speaks of in his book . Hoover's basic premise is that young people are often raised in a religious tradition, but abandon it at college age. He does not see this as a reason for discouragement since many people rediscover their religion in a new and vital way. The book discusses many of the ways young people lives their faith in ways which are both familiar and different. Hoover has much to offer for people looking for ways to strengthen their faith and offers many suggestions for people hoping to deepen their faith. In many ways the book presents similar themes found in Scottie McLennan's FINDING YOUR RELIGION but the emphasis of the Hoover book is more specific to the Catholic faith. People who are looking to strengthen their faith as well as people in ministry will find this book helpful .
Simple and To the Point.......2000-06-23
Hoover's book is a good guide to any young adult graduating from high school and entering college or a vocation. He explains that many young adults do not lose their faith--they just find a new way to understand it. As they question their traditions, experiences, and religious convictions they see different aspects (probably because they are on their own).
Hoover describes the spiritual journey as a "Road Trip". Many people commute to work. Commuters are only concerned with getting to their destination. They dread the trip, ignore the sights, and think only of the end. Hoover points out that many people live their spiritual lives as commuters on the way to heaven. "Road Trips" involve rest stops, visiting, sight seeing, discussions, laughter, and growth. This, according to Hoover, is what the spiritual journey should be. Our growth should be enjoyable and have an awareness of the journey to heaven. Throughout the book this metaphor encourages discipline, an appreciation for tradition and discussion, and a seeking for spiritual growth and formation.
This book is a great book for any graduate.

Collins Machetes And Bowies 1845-1965.......2002-06-09
The book has alot of information. I own one of the old Machetes and it was quite interesting to read about it. I would highly recommend this bood to anyone owning a Collins Machete.
major work on the machete and bowies.......1997-03-14
Since I appear many times in the text of this book as an observor, as a facilitator, and as a source, it may be considered presumptuous for me to review it. But since I am competent to do so, here goes.
Ed and I knew each other from 1971 when we first met. Since I am in MD and he was in CA our face time was limited but we kept in close touch by snail mail and phone.
He made many trips to the source at Collinsville and I dug a large amount of materials out of the National Archives, Smithsonian, and the Library of Congress. Since Ed focused strictly on Collins products and only on the sub lines of machetes and I am interested in all military edged tools and cutlery as well as axe work in general, we overlapped our interests.
Is this the book I have written or would have? Certainly not, but I know for certain that it is all in focus and, unless there is a new vast discovery of documents, if there is anything more to be known about Collins machetes you can put in a very small pot. By focusing as he did Ed was able to find things that I never did nor even thought to look for.
The ultimate test of this kind of book is is it interesting, and is it useful? I think it is so, and I wll be able to chop out all the corporate history which was in my original work and refer the reader to this one.

Not recommended.......2003-12-16
When you open a book and are immediately presented with a map of the Middle East showing Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the West Bank, but no word "Israel," you know something is wrong. When you then read on the first page of the book that Israel's eastern border is the "Palestinian territory," you know that you are not dealing with a fair-minded author. The first page also says that it was "tensions between the two groups" -- Israelis and Palestinians -- that led to "a series of wars and uprisings" after 1948, with no mention of the Arab countries' invasion of Israel in 1948 or subsequent hostile acts. To read just the first page would have you believe that Israel has been continually accumulating additional Arab land since 1948, for no rhyme or reason. The rest of the book follows the same pattern; there's always a reason for Arab discontent, but never a good reason for Israeli responses. Not recommended.

This is not an Atlas.......2007-02-28
One thing this book is NOT is a "historical atlas of India". In 64 pages there are 18 maps -- of these, 3 are of modern India (physical and political), two are of the empire of Alexander (for some unaccountable reason, modern Jordan is marked on one of these maps, as is Medina, which I thought did not exist in those times), one of the spread of Islam up to 750AD(? I thought we were dealing with India?),4 are reprints of old maps of Asia (with no very useful political or other details marked out within the India they show), and one is a "map" (ie plan) of a Portugese trading post(no discernible connection to the text. That leaves 7 maps, 3 of which again are reprints of old British maps of India, not serving any purpose of advancing ones knowledge of the evolution of a united country under the British. A historical atlas should use maps (based on up-to-date research)to show how large-scale forces moved across the landscape as it was shaped into what we know now(eg powerful dynasties, the Black Death or a religion). On that score, this is not a historical atlas. I do not know who the text is pitched at, but it is extremely simplistic -- as it is rather large print I guess kids (WHICH kids, don't ask me). Finally, I note that the page on further reading does not see fit to mention Nehru's "Discovery of India", especially given that Nehru was one of the real founding fathers of modern India, and had a deep understanding of its history.

Couldn't put it down.......2007-09-03
I was a little hestitant when I bought this book but thought I would give it a try since I love stories of Tombstone, old west, Arizona, etc. I couldn't put the book down. I highly recommend it. I felt like I was there and I felt like I could feel Rose's broken heart. I've been to the Bird Cage and now I want to go again to see it through "Rose's" eyes.
Phenominal.......2003-04-03
Fantastic book. Depicts actual lives from the 1880's, allowing you to transport back in time and see it through their eyes. Hard to put down, I re-read parts of it 2 and 3 times. It follows history and tells it like it was.
The Famous Rose Callahan.......2003-03-29
The most amazing story I have ever seen unfold.
The sound of a music box releasing memories of another life - in detail which can only be described as an "eyewitness account" of the daily life of commom people in the most uncommon of places - 1880's Tombstone, Arizona.
The story is told through the eyes of Rose Callahan, a singer and lady of the night, as she struggled with life in that notorious place, while working at the Birdcage Theatre.
The writing style smoothly flows, as it draws the reader into the personal life and relationships of ordinary people in that exciting time and place.
Read this story, and see what it was truly like to be a part of that time in history - as told through the eyes of someone whom I believe was there.
Enthralling vision into the past.......2003-03-23
I've not often been a great fan of "historical" writing but was enchanted with Patricia Barrington's "The Famous Rose Calahan"! I am facinated by the concept of reincarnation and have listened with great interest to personal stories of spiritial and physical "Deja Vu". Ms. Barrington's writings, in a first-hand and "eye-witness" format, kept me entranced for hours.
A pleasant journey into the pastý.......2003-03-04
When I received this book to read I placed it on my stack of books that needed to get read for school. However, once I picked this book up, school was forgotten. This book so inspired me that I took my children on vacation to Tombstone and the Bird Cage. Whether or not you believe in past lives, this book will shake you up and make you wonder... Where were you when Tombstone was young...do you know? Do you really know? Pat Berrington is a wonderful writer and if anyone can make you forget the present...she can.
