Book Description

"To say that Babs has been my closest friend for sixteen years is rather like saying that Einstein was good at sums. We were blood sisters from the age of eleven (before my mother prized the razor out of Babs's hand)."

But now Babs, noisy and as fun as a day at the beach, is getting married. And Natalie Miller, twenty-seven, senior press officer for the London Ballet, panics. What happens when your best friend pledges everlasting love to someone else?

It doesn't help that Nat is dating a guy named Saul Bowcock. As the confetti flutters, her good-girl veneer cracks, and she falls into an alluringly unsuitable affair that spins her crazily out of control. Nat is on the rebound and allergic to the truth—about Babs's relationship, her boyfriend's ambition, her parents' divorce, and her golden-boy brother's little Australian secret. Her mother's lasagna and her roommate Andy's fuzzy slippers are also monstrous affronts. But what Nat really needs to face is the mirror—and herself . . . .

Wickedly witty and refreshingly honest, Running in Heels is a hilarious look at the lies we tell ourselves—and the unwanted truths that only our best friends can tell us.

5 out of 5 stars Am I the only one who loves this book?.......2007-07-07

Running in Heels: A Novel by Anna Maxted is my personal favorite. Seems like everyone despises this novel but I absolutely adore it. The main character Natalie suffers from anorexia, has lost her best friend and is falling in love with her best friend's brother, Andy. Natalie has issues with food, her brother, her parents and everyone in between. I love Maxted's writing, she's a hoot and breaks your heart at the same time. I highly recommend Running in Heels, it won't cure cancer but it will likely heat your summer up. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Why is the Heroine always "bleating"? Terrible Book.......2006-10-07

This book was a major disappointment. It was my first excusion into chick lit and I can safely say I've read enough. The first rule of a good story is that it should make the reader care about the central characters, and I didn't. Or I should say I despised Natalie Miller, found her self-absorbed and annoying, and would not root for her in any instance. I liked her best friend Babs much more, and she is sketched at an arm's distance. Natalie is anorexic, insecure, disloyal, unsure of any decision she makes and totally worthless as a friend. We learn only halfway through the book that she has an eating disorder; which the author can't decide is a central plot twist or not. Natalie is surrounded by men and admirers that all seem to be missing something, but they are all pining over her in one shape or another (Andy, Robbie, Chris, Simon...) and it all seems implausaible given the short shrift she begins that book with (Saul). The story twists are totally predictable, the seductions seem implausible, and she can't seem to commit to any feelings or to one person. She hasn't a clue that Chris is using her, thought it's drawn as plain as day. I wouldn't have her as a friend, and I did not care a fig for what became of her. I bailed out 3/4 into the book and I am sorry I wasted that much time.

And why is Natalie always "bleating" or "squeaking" her responses? ("'I don't' I bleated" or "'I can't' I squeaked.") There must be 2-3 bleats or squeaks per page and they drove me crazy. Then all the other characters start bleating too. Lack of originality and trying too hard to be funny, and failing. This book fell flatter than a ballet slipper.

3 out of 5 stars Cute and funny.......2006-04-23

This was a fun book. I wouldn't say it was Pulitzer material, but it's OK and it was worth the discounted price I got on Amazon. I agree with the author about so many issues. Women are funny!

4 out of 5 stars Wickedly Delightful.......2005-11-16

This book is an example of chick lit done correctly. Maxted does a fabulous job creating a main character who is completely zany, yet totally relatable. The book contained elements of surprise and at times I found myself laughing out loud. I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in an enjoyable and entertaining read.

4 out of 5 stars This is a very enjoyable read.......2005-11-11

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun read, and I actually laughed out loud at some parts, which I rarely do from something in a book. I thought the eating disorder gave it an interesting twist. I'm an American twenty something, and I enjoy reading about British twenty somethings and their different ways of speaking, vocabulary, behavioUr, etc. It wasn't the novel of the year, but it wasn't intended to be. It's good for what it is, a funny, fun, chick-lit. book.

I read all 3 Ravnica novels and enoyed them all very much. This one was good but I was a little disappointed with the ending. If you enjoy magic novels these three are worth a look but don't expect literary masterpieces.

David Herter dazzles in his first novel, Ceres Storm, the leadoff of a series. Herter tells a huge and complex space opera in relatively few words, allowing the reader to fill in the blanks without sacrificing narrative integrity. In this age of ever-larger science fiction and fantasy novels, the effect is breathtaking, an ice cube down the genre's back.

Ceres Storm is the story of Daric, a boy whose entire existence has been encompassed by a modest compound on Mars with some orange trees, a lake, his older brother Jonas, and a thinking statue he calls Grandpapa. When Daric is sent on a mysterious errand to the city, he buys a knowledge drink that connects him intimately with the starlines between planets and suns and sets him on a crash course with a startling destiny. For it seems Daric is a clone of the Leader, a conquering hero of yore who ruled the far reaches of space before a vast and powerful nanostorm destroyed much of the inner solar system. A powerful interplanetary cartel, the Kay-Tees, is after Daric's genetic material to reconquer his former empire.

Herter blends biological and mechanical detail in a compelling fashion to give the reader a strong sense of distant time. When Daric travels to Earth, he sees the deadly wonders that the engulfing nanostorm has made:

With each step the castle became clearer; perhaps it was made of birds, the hundreds winging overhead, flecks of ash caught in clear water, drifting down toward the castle, darkening the red and gold into a hue called Tyrian purple, into black etched with silver, the small arches of windows gleaming like inset jewels, thousands of them ranked up the edifice....

"See what our infernal machines have done."

Like Gene Wolfe, Jack Vance, and others before him, David Herter has imagined a far future where humanity is both reduced and exalted. Ceres Storm is a thrilling debut and promises even more amazements to come. --Therese Littleton

Book Description

David Herter breaks into print with a first class science fiction entertainment. The human race has settled the solar system and expanded out among the stars. Daric, still a boy, has been raised in an isolated enclave on Mars, and is about to become aware of his destiny. Ceres Storm is SF adventure in the tradition of Alfred Bester, Samuel R. Delany, Roger Zelazny and John Varley.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A read for one perfect day.......2004-06-08

What makes this extropian novel work is its limited focus on one boy's perceptions in a super-technological world which he takes for granted. The future will not be subtitled for foreign visitors! Not explained is the nature of the boy's constant companion from birth - computer chip, or just conscience? Not explained or shown is what his Grandfather is, whose care he exits at the novel's start. Not explained is the nature of a Century Rose, a beautiful object of no little value, bartered by the boy for an expensive wine, whose nature is explained -- some.

The wine puts another living voice in his head, one which constantly cries for its homeland -- homeland divided into a thousand distant places. It enables the boy to navigate on a short trip within the solar system, during which he finds only a part of the answers to who he is, where he came from, what he is expected to do, and what he will refuse to do. Throughout, there is a total lack of menace, as if the universe were a dusty, deserted museum of natural history, or as if the boy's sole concern now was with absorbing it all.

This book plays at being mysterious without the cognitive dissonance or dated hip of Neuromancer. Its flaw is that it is so short, and that the wait for a sequel has been long.

3 out of 5 stars Poetic writing, weak plot.......2003-04-19

I really wanted to like this book, it has excellent style and beautiful writing. However, I hardly knew what was going on most of the time. This is partially due to the protagonist being confused, but more so by the writing itself.

However, that being said, the writing style is excellent, well formed poetic sentences drip off the page, and there is a consistent tone of wonder. The universe is well formed, if incomprehensible.

I read a ton of books, and have read a lot that are poetic yet understandable (such as Ursula K LeGuin) so was saddened by my lack of interest in the story itself. For the right reader, this is undoubtably a gem.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great fun weird stuff.......2002-06-15

I loved this book. Okay, so it's not full of explaining and telling you what to think. It's a full speed ahead adventure, and sometimes the kid doesn't make sense of things, so it's hard for the reader, too. But I hear there's a sequel, so just sit tight.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent and Subtle.......2002-06-07

Don't read this book if you want your wonders spoon-fed to you. This is subtle, poetic stuff, and will fly beneath the radar of your average slack-jawed Baen-reading TV-watching fanboy. But if you have a certain amount of intelligence, and maybe insanity, then this book will be a treasure chest of wonders. And remember -- it's only the first book of a series. Not everything is meant to be clear in this one. Just hang on for the ride!

1 out of 5 stars Serious waste of time.......2002-05-28

There were a few novel concepts, but mostly I was reminded of one of those horror movies where you hope everybody is murdered, and quickly, so you do not have to watch any more of it. Zelazny could say little but make you see the larger things implied - and all the more real for having come from your imagination. When Mr. Herter tries that it just looks incomplete. I abandoned it after 70 or 80 pages.

            Book Description

In 1969, the year following the death of Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen published his first book. Who, reading Intimacy: Essays in Pastoral Psychology, at the time could have guessed that its 37 year old Dutch priest-author would become one of the most popular spiritual writers of the 20th-century?

Unlike Merton, whose strictly spiritual writings appealed almost exclusively to Roman Catholics, Nouwen had an enormous following among Protestants as well as Catholics. What was it about this man and his work that so resonated with the American psyche over the past thirty years?

In The Spiritual Legacy of Henri Nouwen, Deidre LaNoue analyzes Nouwen's voluminous writings in the context of his life and times, providing a key to his more than forty individual books as well as a cogent summary of his contribution to the spiritual lives of millions of people. The book includes a complete bibliography of Nouwen's writings as well as a Scripture index of his books.

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Family CAN Enjoy this Magickal Little Volume!!.......2004-01-12

I bought this book with a bit of skepticism...a book on valentines alone, coming in at 96 pages?? Could this be good? Would it have very many good craft projects that I would ACTUALLY be able to do or that I would WANT to do? Any that my kids (at ages 3 & 5) would be able to help with? Would I be able to adapt any of what was in these pages to "punch up" or help take my magickal working into some new areas (hey, who cannot use a bit of help in the romance department every now and then...keeps things interesting and fun!) I have to admit I've had a few stinkers of late when it comes to books of this kind. I must say I was very pleasantly (very, very) surprised when I got it..

I "devoured" it in less than an hour. After my initial reading, I got out my requisite stickies and marked pages I could actually use (either alone, with my kids or in my magick)...I came away with quite a few...many could be done with my kids (though at there age all of them would be supervised activates...older kids -- say ages 7-10 could most certainly do many of the crafts in this book alone). I found several that were both fun, easy and attractive -- my fears about hokey or tacky looking decorations and projects was quickly laid to rest!! These projects could actually be as elegant and classy as you like or as silly and hokey -- depending on what your going for (hey, I admit hokey DOES have a place in our lives!)...the projects are easily explained, the materials are not too numerous (nor are the expensive) to make these projects daunting or overly time consuming (we've all got busy lives...I'd say several could be done in about 30 mins...and some could take several hours...but I didn't think any couldn't be done in say an evening (with the exception of the bubble paper...this would take two days total with drying time) or a rainy day at home!!

While specifically for Valentines day, this book could be used at almost anytime of the year...your loved one's (and you too) deserve to be acknowledged more than once a year...and romance, love, and self-healing magick can certainly be enhanced utilizing some of the ideas in this book!!!

It's certainly refreshing to find a book with quality projects and recipes that are classy and fun without being Martha Stewart caliber snooty and darn hard to actually do in today's busy work-a-day world!! This book comes highly recommended for both the "normal crafter" and the Magickal one!

B+ for Price (at about 11.00, perhaps slightly more I would rather see this at about 9.95 or slightly less for the number of pages)

            A+ for Content

I did a lot of crafts for my parents and my friends. The book gave me so many ideas and it was explaint so well, great book. plus I didn't really need a lot of money.

            Book Description

Seeing fluorescent minerals up close for the first time is an exciting experience. The colors are so pure and the glow is so seemingly unnatural, that it is hard to believe they are natural rocks. Hundreds of glowing minerals are shown, including Aragonite, Celestine, Feldspar, Microcline, Picropharmacolite, Quartz, Spinel, Smithsonite, plus many, more. But don't let the hard-to-pronounce names keep you away. Over 800 beautiful color photographs illustrate how fluorescent minerals look under the UV light, and in daylight, making this an invaluable field guide. Here are minerals from the United States, including mines in New Jersey, New York, Arizona, and California as well as beautiful and unusual minerals from Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Italy, Sweden, and other places. Included are values, a comprehensive resources section, plus helpful advise on caring for, collecting, and displaying minerals. The field of collecting fluorescent minerals is relatively new and this is one of the most complete references available. 8 1/2" x 11" 846 color photos Price Guide/Index

Pictures are fairly decent and accurate, with minor exceptions. A few obvious PhotoShop jobs. But the text has factual and spelling errors that number in the hundreds. I still recommend this book to beginners I come in contact with, but I cringe at the errors I see. Price Guide is 100% subjective, therefore worthless. Most likely what the author paid for the rocks he bought and included. If it were accurate, I'd have a rock worth over $37,000.

Book was published with far too much "blind faith" in references. This should have been published by a person who is more knowledgeable and committed, not a "dabbler".

            5 out of 5 stars Glow Rocks.......2007-07-11

I have both of Stuart Schneider's books and think they are wonderful. I collected fluorescent rocks all over Europe for many years, and now I am doing the same here in the Southwest USA. Stuart is an honest man and he knows a great deal about the subject. It is difficult to get the printed colors in the book to match the beauty one sees in reality, but he comes closer than anyone else. His books are required as part of any good book collection about fluorescence.

This is a terrific book for the beginner as well as for someone who has been collecting for years. Tons of pictures, explainations, and locations of where certain minerals were found, as well as what to look for when rock hunting yourself.

Minerals from the United States from New Jersey to Arizona and California, as well as unusual selections from mineral mines around the world, are profiled in Stuart Schneider's Collecting Flourescent Minerals, a guide to gathering in the field and one of the most complete references to the topic in print. While introductory pages discuss notable mine sources and fluorescent minerals, the heart Schneider's discussion lies in color photos of the minerals themselves, supplementing a price guide which reveals glow factors and favorable lighting.

            Book Description

This book takes a broad look at the hobby of mineral fluorescence. It offers discussions of the major fluorescent minerals and mineral groups, techniques for collection them either on field trips or through trade and purchase, and the many ways fluorescent minerals can be displayed and enjoyed in the home. Fluorescent minerals present a puzzle. Many are of quite ordinary appearance in daylight, but when placed under the invisible rays of an ultraviolet lamp in a darkened room, they suddenly glow in beautiful colors. The transformation is so marked and so mysteriously compelling that many people instantly wish to learn more about it. This book provides information on the nature of ultraviolet light, how it causes fluorescence in a wide range of minerals, and how hobbyists can extract years of pleasure learning about them.

            5 out of 5 stars A Variety of Baskets.......2001-11-18

This Basket book has baskets to make for all skill levels.
Some are more intrakit. some are very plain, but very pretty
for every day use. This book has very good picture for instruction of the various weaves. I take a class in basket making and one of the other students had the book and I knew I
needed this book to make baskets. It also has colored pictures which I like.

5 out of 5 stars Flo has done it a second time!!.......1998-08-03

I thought that Flo wrote the "bible" on round reed baskets with her first book and she has out-done herself with this 2nd one. If you are experienced at making baskets with round reed and you want a challenge, get this book. If you need a good reference to start with simpler baskets, get her first one. This book has some stunning baskets. She gives excellent illustrations and directions anyone can follow. As a teacher of basketry I would not be without it for reference and a source for many beautiful baskets for my students to make.

                        Book Description

Maurice Rapf knows movies and the movie business as an insider, from first-hand experience, not from books. His autobiography is the story of one person's interaction with an evolving Hollywood.

                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars long-awaited eyewitness account by a famous Hollywood figure.......1999-11-02

This is a pricey but invaluable memoir by one of the few individuals who can claim to have grown up right in the center of the action during Hollywood's Golden Era. Maurice Rapf knew all the great legends personally and is in fact a living legend himself. His father founded MGM along with Louis B. Mayer and Irving Thalberg, and since Mayer had only two daughters and Thalberg's children were not born until the 1930's, Maurice was the natural crown prince of MGM during the 1920's and 1930's, and the studio backlot was literally his playground. Though his father, producer Harry Rapf, remains best known for discovering Joan Crawford, the enduring excellence and genuine appeal of Harry Rapf's film output has been much better appreciated in recent years due to the frequent revival of early Marie Dressler, Wallace Beery and Crawford talkies on Turner Classic Movies. Although the author could easily have moved up through the studio system to become a production mogul himself, his own personal sense of civic responsibility caused him to reject this opportunity, embrace the Communist Party, and buck the studio system. Along the way, he left his own indelible imprint in Hollywood history by his screenwriting contributions to such Disney classics as Cinderella, but his career was interrupted by the Hollywood blacklist. After many tribulations the author became a beloved professor at Dartmouth College and now tells this long-awaited story.

Mr. Rapf tells it calmly but very entertainingly. He avoids gossip, but discloses details and insights which no one else could provide. He is unapologetic for the ideological decisions he made in his youth, and makes it clear that his embrace of Communism was not simply a gravitation towards the Russian Marxist experiment, but also a reaction against the Nazi Germany he personally eyewitnessed, as well as the chicanery he saw emanating from much of the Hollywood management. He isn't afraid to buck the prevailing views on historical figures he knew personally-for example, he found Walt Disney to be neither anti-semitic nor a Red baiter during the years they worked together. All told, this is a fascinating and moving account of an individual born literally in the middle of the Hollywood dream.

"""This is a naughty book, a really cheeky little brat of a book which ought to be spanked soundly and sent to bed without any supper. Except that, if you did that, you would be missing out on a delightful, entertaining smorgasbord of advice, insights, red herrings, and jokes that together make up a classic text for business leaders.""

                        ¿Stefan Stern, Business Voice

Everyone knows where a straight line goes... but a squiggly line can go anywhere.

Computers generate straight lines. Life generates squiggly ones. That's why your predictable business strategies never turn out the way you expect. Too many strategy books see the world as if it were a straight line. Serious. Predictable. And deadly dull. This book knows something they don't. It knows you need to slay dragons and charm snakes in a business world that's awfully squiggly, but, also, endlessly fun and fascinating. So, this book takes you off the beaten path. Way off.

Here, strategy finally does bite back, at all the boring books and professors you had to stomach to get here. It'll knock you off your chair and help open your mind...to get past the ""straight line"" thinking that can't be right.

Dare to be creative, contrarian....heck, be bold and make your own personal strategy revolution:

Bring passion, imagination, creativity, and fun back to strategy¿and surprise the folks at home!

OK, strategy is crucial. We know that. Everyone knows that. But why must it be so deadly serious? So plodding, uncreative, boring? Dull strategy books promote dull strategists who create dull strategies that fail. Now there's an antidote: Strategy Bites Back.

It's full of insight and daring, from Gary Hamel to Napoleon Bonaparte, Michael Porter to Hans Christian Andersen, all tied together by the triumvirate that is Henry Mintzberg, Bruce Ahlstrand, and Joe Lampel. Essays, poems, case studies, cartoons...whatever it takes to free your mind and unleash the crucial emotional side of strategy formation.

This is the whole squiggly shebang: strategy and gamesmanship, black dresses, and seduction...strategy lessons from your mother, from beehives, chess grandmasters, even the National Zoo.

Mintzberg, Ahlstrand, and Lampel take on every sacred cow and entrenched belief that keeps you from recognizing your most powerful options¿and acting on them. Fun? Heck, yeah. But it'll help you define inspired strategies that offer huge upsides...and what could be more fun than that?"

4 out of 5 stars Good source .......2007-01-18

This book is a source of other works about strategy. The book has a balance between Theory and Practice. The theory is well covered by some star authors in the field of strategy. In the other side, some news and interviews are the sample of practice of strategy in business. Im still prefer the Strategy Safari, but this book is still valuable.

2 out of 5 stars Not boring but not well-organized either.......2006-08-04

The title and book cover tells you it's not a boring book. The contents are not boring as well. A bit of wisdom here and there worth carrying with you on your next chit chat on strategy but I had a hard time with the book's flow.

I find it poorly organized jumping here and there. There are many authors which made it difficult to tie together but still, I think it could have been better.

5 out of 5 stars Business strategy, with a wry twist.......2006-04-20

You've never read a business book quite like this one. Often with tongues planted firmly in cheek, authors Henry Mintzberg, Bruce Ahlstrand and Joe Lampel tap a variety of sources in illuminating the frequently nebulous topic of strategy. The essays, anecdotes and quotes are unique, insightful and sometime humorous. And the book is not just nontraditional and cute: it also provides plenty of good, solid information on strategy. We recommend that you go ahead and take a big bite. Chew slowly and savor the flavor. It goes down easy.

4 out of 5 stars A Refreshing View of Strategy.......2005-11-11

good book to read on strategy as it makes you think, takes you out of your comfort zone and is a little zany. I like it. They dont take themselves too seriously and strategy either. It is written and compiled so that the stories are short and to the point and by different authors and thinkers in the world of strategy. Good diverse look at the topic

2 out of 5 stars Interesting stories,,, but.......2005-11-05

Other than some quotes and perspectives to consider - nothing of new news or ah-ha's in the book. For someone looking to find ways to shake up the planning process - this book did not help much

                        5 out of 5 stars great book.......2000-03-27

Kishon is the greatest writer of satire. This book tells funny stories about everyday life in Israel. When you read it though, you discover that the anecdotes and problems he describes are universal and there's a little bit of you in almost every one of them. I very much liked the book and highly recommend it to even people who usually never read this type of books.
