Book Description
Sabbath Creek is the story of Lewis Pope, a fourteen-year-old boy thrust into an adult world when his beautiful mother takes him on an aimless journey through south Georgia. Cerebral and sensitive, Lewis is forced to confront the latent fears-scars left from the emotional abuse of an alcoholic father and the lack of comfort from a preoccupied mother- that crowd his interior existence.
At the heart of the journey, and of the novel itself, is Truman Stroud, the quick-witted, cantankerous, ninety-three-year-old black owner of the crumbling Sabbath Creek Motor Court, where Lewis and his mother are stranded by car trouble. Despite his prickly personality and the considerable burden of his own tragedies, Stroud becomes the boy's best hope for a father figure, as he teaches Lewis the secrets of baseball and the secrets of life.
This compassionate, powerful work of fiction travels from the ruined landscape of south Georgia and takes us all the way through the ruined landscape of a broken heart.

This book is so well written. The story alone is very good but the imagery and symbolism raise it to a level that few authors can attain. I highly recommend it for the thinking reader.

When Charlene and Lewis Pope's car breaks down at Sabbath Creek, Georgia, the mother takes a room at the local, run-down motel, while the son learns about baseball and life from the motel's ninety-three-year-old owner, Truman Stroud. In the short course of a few summer weeks, Lewis practices his pitching and learns the valuable lesson of gaining control--and again, baseball imitates life. A simple, beautifully written, character-driven story that routinely and deftly avoids stereotypes in both character and situation. There are no easy answers in Sabbath Creek. Here is a sweet and charming novel that asks much of the reader. That is, it is not a summer read to lay aside and forget. You will return in your mind to Sabbath Creek for days after you have read the gentle philosophy of Judson Mitcham.

it was a well written book that kept me intrigued, however, as I felt the pages getting fewer and fewer, I started to look for a conclusion. As I turned to the last page, it ended.

The dialogue is very well done but these earthy people are already known to us. The no-nonsense, old southern black man, the battered wife on the run from her husband and the young boy trying to find and separate himself from the debris which surrounds him.
We've seen them before and Sabbath Creek does little to flesh them out.

Enter Amelia -- With a Twist.......2005-06-15
In this fourth novel of the popular "Slayers" franchise, the story picks up immediately from where it left off in the third novel. The "Slayers Next" anime took material from this novel to make episodes 8 through 13. There are lots of differences. For starters, there's no Xellos. Also, the Mazoko Mazenda is not in this novel. Martina and Zelgediss are not here either. A new villian, the powerful assassin Zuuma, does have a role to play though.
As to the story, after escorting Sylphiel to her grandfather's house, it is obvious that things aren't right in Saillune. Crown Prince Phil drops by for a vist and quickly hires Lina and Gourry. He knows Lina from a previous encounter (which gets a couple of mentions in this novel, but was used to make the "Slayers" anime episode 11).
Now involved in this plot to kill Phil, Lina and Gourry must find out who's behind the assassination plots. However, Lina soon finds herself the target of a powerful assassin, not to mention she's also the target of a powerful mage, one that may be more powerful than she is. She must learn the truth before Phil and she are killed.
Amelia doesn't come off as over the top as she does in the anime, but it is clear that she's supposed to be a champion of justice, powerful yet a bit clumsy, & cheerful as well as clever. I'm glad she'll be in the next novel.
Another plus this novel pulls over the anime is the mystery of the attacks on Lina. With no Xellos around, there's no one to secretly protect Lina, thus when demons are summoned in various forms (including one incident where Lina and Gourry's diner comes alive and attacks them), Lina is on her own with Gourry. From time to time Amelia does assist, but not often. Thus Lina's dispatching of the villian in the novel is more impressive to me than was her dispatch of the villian in the anime.
I like how the novel goes in to a little more detail on the segments of the Mazoku Dark Lord, Ruby Eye Shabranigdu, including the segment which came alive 1000 years ago and is sealed in the north lands. The exploration of the Mazoku is very interesting to me.
As to the novel, my standard complaints of a lack of Japanese honorifics remains. It is interesting that they appeared in the afterward. It was also interesting when I read this line from the novel, "(The Mazoku) never refered to Shabranigdu by an official title or with any honorific. Mazoku are very strict about their code, so (the Mazoku's) slip-of-the-tongue had been a clue to something else, or rather someone else." The Mazoku and the priest/miko use Japanese honorifics and I'd like to seem them left in. The above quote is a main reason why.
Bottom line: Of the novels released to date, this is the best one yet. Fans of the "Slayers" series really will want to score this and get the greater details of the novel.

Ms. Angier has responded brilliantly to the criticism of Mike Wigler (one of the scientists featured in the book) and refrained from writing "a textbook". She has instead taken us into the world of hardcore biomedical research to see the people behind the scenes as they race to unlock the secrets of nature. Focusing on the events and people in the Weinberg lab at MIT during the early days of the discovery of cellular oncogenes, the book leads us to share with them the excitement of discovery as well as the pain of defeat, for mother nature is often a rather cagey opponent. This book is an invaluable tool to budding biomedical scientists in appreciating the lives and work of their predecessors, and I highly recommend it to anyone who's ever been bored by their biology textbooks.

What kinds of civic ties between different ethnic communities can contain, or even prevent, ethnic violence? This book draws on new research on Hindu- Muslim conflict in India to address this important question. Ashutosh Varshney examines three pairs of Indian cities--one city in each pair with a history of communal violence, the other with a history of relative communal harmony--to discern why violence between Hindus and Muslims occurs in some situations but not others. His findings will be of strong interest to scholars, politicians, and policymakers of South Asia, but the implications of his study have theoretical and practical relevance for a broad range of multiethnic societies in other areas of the world as well. The book focuses on the networks of civic engagement that bring Hindu and Muslim urban communities together. Strong associational forms of civic engagement, such as integrated business organizations, trade unions, political parties, and professional associations, are able to control outbreaks of ethnic violence, Varshney shows. Vigorous and communally integrated associational life can serve as an agent of peace by restraining those, including powerful politicians, who would polarize Hindus and Muslims along communal lines.

Mr. Ashutosh has taken a very controversial subject but the high ground he had to take with integrity in dealing with such a sensitive subject is missing.
He is blaming Muslims for the riots. Nothing can be further than the truth. Muslims are not in power hence can do nothing with no administration and police support. They don't make policies nor laws and have practically no say in any thing. One wonders how one can orchestrate riots that Mr. AShutosh is accusing the Muslims of. Defies logic.
The problem is they have been sidelined from all departments of Indian and State Governments as a matter of State Policies. They have been singled out for discrimination in all walks of life. Without State Policy helping them to be driven out of the mainstream this could not happen.
Muslims are also Indians and must not be discriminated at any cost. Their presence must be made to be felt in all Government and Private services, only then can we say that we are a great secular democracy. They are a sizable chunk of the Indian population. Rajiv Gandhi at least had realised the need to uplift Muslims and was thinking in the right direction until Narasimha Rao took over and derailed the process yet again.
The problem is Muslims do not read the constitution and take people like Narasimha Rao and Narender Modi to courts.
I plead with Mr. Ashutosh to be more sympathetic to their co-citizens and understand their needs and plight. It hardly matters what religion one propheses in a secular India. Or does it?
Book does not deserve schlorship.......2007-04-30
Mr. Varshney seems to have some agenda with this book.This book with it emphasis tries to blame muslims for the instigators of all riots . May I suggest another book called "The production of Hindu muslim violence "by Paul Brass . This book is more balanced and deals very well the real issues of riots . Infact Mr. Varshney was so critical of this book that he misquotes the authors intention and harshly critisizes his schlorly work in his review with the Times of India.In reply, Mr. Brass posts his objections and analysis about criticism from Mr. Varshney in a poignant and subtle manner.
Groundbreaking research.......2004-06-03
I've worked and taught in the field of peacebuilding for 25 years and consider this book the single most important research that has been done in the field. Varshney breaks new ground in conducting indepth research into why some cities in India into fell into violence and some did not during times of high national tension.
He presents clear and extremely useful findings about what is useful and what is not useful in resisting violence. Specifically, his research shows that creating structures that bring people together to work for a common cause or benefit(such as Hindu-Muslim traders cooperatives, joint community development committees, peace committees, etc.) has a marked effect in reducing violence.
I present Varshney's findings in a variety of settings worldwide and find audiences always highly responsive. My students love the book and find Varshney's ideas so clear and insightful that the often refer back to him later.
This book in my view is an example of scholarship at its best: well-designed, provocative, clear in its conclusions. On top of that is it unusually lucid in writing style. I consider it a "classic" - a book that will endure for many years and that deserves to be on the shelf of any serious student of ethnic or religious violence.
You can read the first and last few chapters and get the real benefits of the book.

Varshney had the opportunity to examine the Hindu-Muslim divide in India using fresh glasses, and he has failed at it. His book is a litany of hackneyed generalizations and simplistic arguments.

Varshneys research is particulary impressive because of the concise research method that he upholds. I am pleased that he has studied both peaceful and violent cities--giving his research model a basis for comparison. I have purchased 20 copies of Ethnic Conflict and Civic life and have circulated the work among my friends. Varshney's work gives us hope for world peace. this is the work of utter genius. very impressive research. particulary interesting was his intricate methodology of janwars in conflict. I highly recomment this book.

I *LOVE* this cookbook! I have (and love) the earlier edition, but this is completely different, and incredibly wonderful. Like many community cookbooks, it contains families' most treasured recipes -- but they're very clearly written, most describe why they're such favorites, and they're all contributed by writers, many of whom you'll know and love. Truly, one of my all-time favorites!

I must confess that since the advent of the Internet, I have not found it necessary to buy many cookbooks (sorry, authors), because the recipe for just about anything can be found on the virtual Web, but this book caught my eye, went on my Amazon Wish List and was received for Christmas. What an absolute treat! The recipes as such are almost secondary in this book, because the point is that all of them have been contributed by American authors, including such jaw-dropping talents as Pete Dexter and Elmore Leonard. And Jay McInerney and E. Annie Proulx. And many more. Now, as one who likes to cook and has by dint of circumstance done so in Eastern Europe for more than a decade now, I find a distressing reliance in some of these recipes on such things as Campbell's soups. With the possible exception of the most detailed bisques and, perhaps, Bouillabaisse, soup is so easy and wonderful to cook at home that there should be no excuse for this. But I digress. The true joy to this book is the writing which accompanies many of the recipes. Thus, for instance, you would never find this ingredient in the oeuvre of Julia Childs:
1 lb. turkey hearts (Do not attempt to collect individually - very messy and inconvenient to the turkeys)
Or instructions such as this; "Now serve with rice and, on the side, a well-iced can of Pabst Blue Ribbon, one per guest, with extra in the icebox. Without the Pabst is okay, but not true Appalachian".
This is a book which would be appropriate not just for those who spend lots of time in the kitchen, but to anyone who enjoys American literature. There's enough for both kinds of people (and I'll bet lots of Amazon users correspond to both descriptions). I can't recommend this book more highly!

If you ever wondered how Joyce Carol Oates prepared "The Career Woman's Meal," or what Eudora Welty put in "Charles Dickens's Eggnog," or how Ray Bradbury made "Peach Kuchen," this book is your chance to find out. Among the recipes (or disclaimers to lack of culinary skills) are Bill Moyers's "Championship Chili Mix," Arthur Miller's "Reflections on Butterflied Leg of Lamb," a salad composed by Helen Gurley Brown and another by Joan Didion, John Steinbeck's "Mysterious Striped Bass" and Jessica Mitford's "Fish & Shrimp Casserole." Collectibles books don't get much better than this. This 3rd edition, 312 page hardbound volume with beautiful laminated covers, features more than 850 full color, large, sharp, full color photos throughout. It provides a wealth of information, in addition to pictures and prices. The treasure covers Historical and Rarities, Interesting company biographies, a large sectin on repros, look alikes, re-issues and fakes. A complete pattern index is included. Values provided are 1998. Collectors of salt shakers will love this book and refer to it often. A must have for salt shaker collectors.

This is a nice book to look at but since I make up to 100 cards each year, most of them take way too much time to complete. If you are looking to make just a few cards, there are some wonderful ideas but not for quick but clever and good looking cards in quantity.

I've just had a lot of fun figuring out what I can turn the Christmas cards into. Sure we all know about cutting out gift tags but this goes way beyond that simple suggestion.
The author shows place cards, party table decorations, placemats and coasters, all made with the colorful pictures from Christmas cards. She even makes a Christmas village of little houses, a creche, furnishes a doll's house and creates a merry-go-round.
The black and white photos look a bit dated, but use your imagination to picture today's stack of cards transformed into lots of projects. I even cut old cards into bookmark sized pieces to slip inside the cards I send next year.
It's fun for an adult but will keep the kids busy too.

THIS IS THE STORY OF SPENCER HAYWOOD, FORMER NBA STAR. SPENCER DOES A GREAT JOB TELLING US OF HIS DAYS LIVING IN THE SOUTH WITH THE JIM CROW LAWS. HE TELLS OF PICKING COTTON AND HAVING HAND ME DOWN EVERYTHING. HIS MAIN ESCAPE WAS BASKETBALL WHICH WOULD BE HIS BREAD AND BUTTER FOR YEARS TO COME. ALONG THE WAY TO A GREAT CAREER, SPENCER MARRIED ONE OF THE HOTTEST AND POPULAR MODELS OF HER TIME, IMAN. HIS REALTIONSHIP WITH THIS VERY SELF CENTERED AND CONFUSED WOMAN IS VERY INTERESTING ALONG WITH STORIES OF HIS CAREER. BUT THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS BOOK IS HIS ADDICTION AND RECOVERY FROM COCAINE. THE FRIGHTNING AND HONEST TELLING OF THIS IS TRULY RIVETING. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND RECOMMEND IT FOR ANYONE. A MUST READ, GREAT JOB SPENCER.
Riveting book.......2001-03-07
Spencer Haywood's story is one that is not uncommon in sports. A brilliant career derailed by drug abuse. What I found especially compelling about this book was Haywood and Ostler's harrowing account of Spencer's crack addiction. After reading this part of the book, I found myself rooting when Spencer beat his problem and went back to try out in the NBA. A great story.
