Book Description
The latest title in a series based on characters from the best-selling War of Souls trilogy.
This title is the next in a series that explores the lives of key characters from Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman's New York Times best-selling War of Souls trilogy. Prisoner of Haven describes events that directly overlap events during the War of Souls, and it features a character originally introduced in Dragons of Summer Flame. Author Berberick also wrote The Lioness, a previous title in this same series.
Customer Reviews:
Terribly Boring and Dreary.......2006-07-21
First off I would like to salute Richard Pierson in his fatally accurate description of this book. I had orginally planned to write more but he expressed much of my dislike for this book already, so I will just add some additional points.
Over the years I have read many Dragonlance books, and by far this is the worst. From the very get go the plot was boring and predictable, a characteristic that did not improve over the course of the novel. The characters of Usha and Dezra are underdeveloped and down right annoying at times. Usha is an especially weak maincharacter throughout the entire book.
As others have said this book is a good example of recent DL books that have gone awry. Other minor descrepicies present themselves as well. One being spelling mistakes that should have been spotted in editing.
Of all the DL books I have read this is certainly the least appealing to me to recommend or re-read. Whiny, boring, and weak are the three most important words I can convey to you about this book. People that havent read alot of other DL books, enjoy little action, and annoying aristocrats might kinda like this book. If you are reading it because you want to complete the Age of Mortals series then I am truly sorry for you and hope that you can finish quickly.
Romance Novels dont belong in DragonLance........2005-02-17
Unfortunately, Nancy Varian Berberick Ruins a book series about a world that i have come to love. Between this Soap Opera Style Romance of a book, and the "Inheritance" book she wrote that completly contradicts the whole Original history of the world. Her writing style is good and she is a good author i just dont feel that her writing belongs in the Fantasy/Sci-fi genre especially not DragonLance. Any dedicated DragonLance reader will find many flaws in this book. Usha was a TRAINED rogue, but now she is the most harmless of women. Very dissapointed.
A realistic touch to fantasy...what a novel idea.......2004-10-14
First off, at the risk of starting a war of words, to Mr. Pierson, with all due respect, the point you bring up is a strictly chauvinistic one and makes it clear that you missed the whole point in Usha's "betrayal." While Palin may have been off saving the world, that's not the point. The point is that he was her husband and, in fantasy, that's as important a fact as it is in real life. He was being a poor husband and, in real life, when wives have husbands that are acting like, to use a polite term, jerks, it affects them. So, while you're crucifying a fictional character for having a real person reaction, maybe you should sit back and realize that it's one of the few time that people in these novels have acted like ::gasp:: real people!
I, for one, applaud Mrs. Berberick for having the courage to "taint" one of the series' more recognizable characters and will agree with the other two reviewers that this was an excellent novel. As far as continuity within the series, it never has been and never will be a mistake-free series. Weis and Hickman are as guilty as anyone else of breaking the "rules" and I have long since stopped caring if their precious little "vision" is changed now and again by an author trying to tell a good story. This was a good story and was, at times, very poignant. The villains didn't need anymore background than we were given, just as Usha and Dezra didn't need fleshing out beyond the simple synopses of their recent history. They're Dark Knights of the new age, thus they're evil and hardly representational of the honorable Knights of Dragons of a Summer Flame.
For a good story, you don't have to make the bad guys sympathetic...you just have to establish that they're bad. Hanging innocents and taking over a town qualifies pretty much as bad in my book, though I dunno about anyone else's. While this is far from the greatest DragonLance book ever penned, it's pretty damn good considering the small setting and content. Read away!
An avid reader from Kenosha.......2004-10-07
What a nifty book. Well-written, engaging characters, and tightly plotted. Ms. Berberick's work always impresses me. It was nice to have major characters with real-world problems, and to have characters with maturity. The characters drive the story. Very happy to have this book on my shelf.
A mature & thought-provoking work.......2004-08-15
This latest offering from Nancy Varian Berberick presents a more mature and thought-provoking work than much of what passes for genre fare these days. In the book, Usha is a heroine confronted by very real difficulties in her marriage and makes choices that are all too easily dismissed as simple acts of betrayal. But these are choices faced by flesh-and-blood people, not hollow, shopworn idealizations. That doesn't mean what she chooses should be condoned, and indeed she bears the consequences of her actions, but that is what sets this work apart -- there are real-life decisions to be made and real-life consequences to be borne. All of which is dealt with in Ms. Berberick's beautifully crafted language. All in all, this is a work to be savored, to be relished, although it is not, perhaps, a work that will satisfy those who have yet to achieve a certain level of life experience.
Book Description
Following WILDC.A.T.S: Homecoming, this collec- tion sees the team reassemble, disillusioned by their experiences on Khera. But the call of battle soon pulls the team together, as they face a mysterious menace on the island called Gamorra, an alien conqueror on the moon, and a rampant crime wave in the streets of New York City.
Customer Reviews:
Alan Moore's least satisfying extended work.......2005-12-18
In 1995 Alan Moore took over as writer for the ongoing comics title WildC.A.T.S. with issue 21 and stayed with it for over a dozen issues. Those issues were collected in the trade paperbacks Homecoming and Gang War.
For those interested in Alan Moore who wouldn't otherwise be inclined to read a title like WildC.A.T.S. there's not much here to recommend. Story is minimal, and there is little development of substance over the course of Moore's contribution. It's a study in superhero soap opera. The reader is subject to a steady sampling of team member infighting, romances, grudges, and bickering.
Several other problems present themselves:
1. For Moore fans who are unfamiliar with WildC.A.T.S. there's very little effort expended on filling in readers with any backstory.
2. Moore takes over an ongoing title which has concepts that were "inspired" by Chris Claremont's original X-Men run, which ironically were "inspired" by Moore's early contributions to Captain Britain and Warrior magazine.
3. The artists assigned to this title change nearly every issue, making the look inconsistent. Some of these artists have an underdeveloped sense of page layout, making the reading experience confusing at times. Moore is known to tailor his scripts to the strengths and weaknesses of his collaborators. In this case, that was impossible.
An Alan Moore quote on the topic of his work here: "I was trying to work out what the audience wanted, which is a terrible mistake and I don't know what I was thinking."
"I'm the thing that's left when the soul is gone.".......2003-08-19
Moore spent most of the nineties in hibernation, writing titles that had been pulled in too many different directions and streamlining them. WildC.A.T.S is one of the better examples, as is the ingenious Supreme. Moore (and James Robinson, earlier in the series) takes the characters from being cheap X-Men knock-offs to having personalities and agendas of their own, and makes previously boring heroes like Spartan fascinating. That's not to say that this is a flawless book, by any means. Moore's writing seems rushed, at times, and his usual inventiveness is undercut by silly cross-overs, fist-fights peppered with one-liners (albeit good ones), and some frankly terrible ideas from the first year of the book that he has to do somersaults to avoid, occasionally leaving a plot hole behind. Still, he manages to hit his stride by the end of the book, and the finale is genuinely moving, interesting, and scary. The books' chief villain comes out of left field so smoothly that you wonder why you never saw him coming, and Moore is obviously attached to some of the wackier characters like Majestic and Ladytron. The only other caveat I feel I should offer is that the book's artwork is fatally uneven. Wildstorm puts Travis Charest in every issue they can, but his artwork is lazy at times (xeroxed panels, sillhouettes, no backgrounds), and the fill-in artists look like, well, fill-in artists. That said, some of Charest's work is genuinely beautiful, and certainly worth looking at.
Overall, a solid book with a few flaws that is still very much worth the reading.
Note: This is a companion set with WildC.A.T.S: Homecoming, and is the second book in the series.
Moore strikes again!.......2001-02-27
Noted for groundbreaking work such as The Watchmen, V for Vendetta and more recently, From Hell, Alan Moore is the most influential and critically acclaimed active comic book author. In this comic, Alan Moore again proves his dominance in the much maligned field of comic book writing. Those who dismiss the dialogue as wordy likely have no formal education in writing, preferring action to subtlety. Precisely there lies Moore's mastery of his craft. Integrating subtle moments fully draws the reader into the story, unlike most comics. The difficulty some may have is that with Moore, if you don't pay attention/reread, you're likely going to miss something.
Too much dialogue.......2000-04-07
What promised to be a battle-heavy trip into the world of comic turned out to be an animated soap opera. While I expected more "gang wars" as promised by the title, I found that the bulk of the book is devoted to the stormy relationship between The Spartan and Yavolda. In fact, the entire book is this couple's meetings at several social events, and although the first dinner scene is amusing, the subsequent dinners and weddings drone on and on. The "witty" dialogue comes off as trite ( especially since the two love-birds are decked out in super-hero gear ). So call me mean, but two meta-humans casting longing glances over cups of expensive coffee is a step down for the comic world.
Book Description
Boredom matters, writes Michael Raposa, because it represents a threat to spiritual life. Boredom can undermine prayer and meditation and signal the failure of religious imagination. If you engage it seriously, however, it can also be the starting point for philosophical reflection and spiritual insight. It can serve as a prelude to the discovery or rebirth of religious meaning.
Boredom, then, is a paradox, surprisingly complex and ambiguous. Being bored with someone or something can represent a trivial matter--being bored with one's clothes or a magazine article--or a matter of significant consequence--being bored with one's marriage or the music one loves to play. Boredom can signify a moral failure or the presence of virtue. Appreciating the value of boredom does not require that one welcome, much less celebrate, its occurrence. Raposa simply invites us to pay attention to boredom's many possible lessons.
The principal methods Raposa employs are philosophical. Drawing on Peirce's idea that all experience is interpreted experience, Raposa sees boredom as a failure of interpretation, an inability to read signs in life as religiously meaningful. The Gospel of Mark depicts a prayerful and passionate Jesus juxtaposed with his drowsy disciples in Gethsemane. Their failure to discern what is happening in their midst, Raposa suggests, is a powerful example of what medieval Christian theologians called acedia, their term for boredom with the rituals of spiritual devotion. But these descriptions of acedia bear a striking resemblance to mystical accounts of the "dark night," a terrifying but necessary stage in the mystic's spiritual journey.
Drawing on this notion and others from eastern and western religious traditions, Raposa asks us to see boredom playing an ambivalent role in spiritual life, often serving as a metaphorical midwife for the birth of religious knowledge. His subject, he admits, seems tongue-in-cheek at first, but a stunning depth is quickly revealed. His lucid, witty, and intelligent discussion offers a path to the kind of meaning that is a fundamental desideratum in human experience.

Great book for students.......2004-02-20
Being a swiss chef who went to school with the old Pauli I was surprised to see this new Edition based on North American Laws and guide lines. Not only does it cover Nutrition, kitchen Managment and basic history of cooking - it also contains a great Lexicon of most commenly used ingredients. There are also many basic recepies included and a great chapter on sauces, soups and basic cooking techniques - a must buy for all seriously interested cooking students. Just alone because it is soo much easier to read than the proffessional chef...
the mundane half of a great culinary reference.......1999-05-24
Classical Cooking ("Der Lehrbuch der Küche", "Technologie culinaire") is easily recognized by most hotel/F&B professionals trained in Western Europe and often just called the "Pauli".
Unfortunately, the American publisher of the 3rd edition (John Wiley) has choosen to split the book into two volumes. The recipes are actually the second half of Classical Cooking and while they are consistently good, the really amazing part of the original version happens to be the theory section that professional ethics, sanitation, and safety, kitchen management, food descriptions and purchasing, nutrition, menu planning, accounting, before going to cooking theory.
Apparently, John Wiley intends on publishing this content at some point, but it is a real shame that they chose to A.) break up the book in two, and B.) publish the recipes first. It is the missing theory and methods section that teaches the fundamentals of running a restaurant, hotel, or institutional kitchen.
One excellent solution is to seek out the out-of-print 2nd edition (Van Nostrand Reinhold) in used bookstores. The complete 2nd edition (which has both theory and recipes, just like the German and French editions used in Swiss hotel management schools) merits its reputation as possibly the most important book for an F&B manager to own.

A classic for advanced cooks and chefs.......2007-01-07
I have both the first edition (1979) and the second edition (1989)and enjoy both. Which is better? Hard to say after using both. Eugen Pauli's son finished the 2nd ed. after his father's death, and while he did a good job overall in condensing material, he also condensed a bit too much at times, in leaving out cross referencing to other pages, thus leaving the reader do do this on his/her own. Not a problem. For the perfectionist, having both editions (unfortunately!) is best to glean all pearls of advice from Eugen Pauli's vast knowledge.
The 1st ed basic cooking methods (Chap 8) has helpful illustrations in it's 14 pages, whereas the 2nd ed has no illustrations in it's condensed 5 pages, yet conveys much of the same information, with both editons cautioning one to not poach eggs above 175 F. I have a slight preference for the 1st edition's illustrations and overall treatment of the cooking basics in this chapter.
The lobster thermidor recipe will make home cooks cringe, with only ingredients of "lobster, oil, white sauce and prepared spicy mustard". Looking up white sauce, he has a recipe for 10 quarts...fine for a restaurant chef to reduce in quantity..reading further, this white sauce requires white stock to be previously made, add another few hours...so this is not an easy recipe for a home cook to jump into, yet may be old hat to a restaurant chef.
Both editions list recipe ingredients in US and Metric weights, a very accurate way of measuring.
Many of the "recipes" are in a shorthand that list ingredients without listing amounts or how to prepare...this is typical of chefs' books for other chefs, such as with Hering's Dictionary of Classical and Modern Cookery or Louis Saulnier's Le Repertoire de La Cuisine.
Both editions have a few photos, there is some overlap, (I prefer those in the original edition) but these are dated photos and for historical info, as modern preparations are less elaborate in amount of items on a platter, and in other instances simpler in overall balance and presentation.
Either edition is a great resource for an experienced chef in listing countless recipe variations in chef's shorthand (without precise amounts of ingredients for many such listings), and still has much for a home cook to use as a source of classical ideas and variations, but just not as a home cook's primary cookbook.
There is a 3rd editon, however I'm told by chefs that it actually leaves out much of the info in the first 100 pages on actually runing a kitchen, nutrition, food purchasing etc., so this may not be an improvement at all, and for one to selection either the 1st or 2nd edition over the slightly gutted 3rd edtion.

Both editions list recipe ingredients in US and Metric weights, a very accurate way of measuring.

The Queen's jewels are astounding!.......2005-08-30
"Amazing" is the only word to describe the impressive array of jewels in Her Majesty's collection. Tiaras, bracelets, earrings... all delicately made and intricate in their structure. Whether they are gifts from other heads of state, inheritance, or personal presents from her parents, the Queen's jewels will take your breath away.
Now when you see pictures of the Queen and her female relations - whether on television or in magazines - you'll be able to name the tiara, place the bracelet, identify the earrings, and swoon over the plate-sized gems pinned to dresses. Brilliant!

Fairly thourough look at an extensive collection.......1998-11-29
A well written guide to QE II's elaborate collection of precious stones. Comes complete with her family tree as a reference, which you may find handy to refer to as the author traces back how most of the pieces came to the Queen through her ancestors. Many pictures, however, there are almost as many of Queen Mary as there are of Queen Elizabeth II! I especially liked the way it was discussed how some older pieces have been taken apart, reset, and reconfigured to make them do duty in the 20th and 21st centuries. A very well researched book that any royal watcher will enjoy. I would love to see the author devote a publication to the jewelry (real and paste) of the late Princess of Wales.

Book Description
The rapid sequence of important inventions and developments in the past thirty years has decisively affected technical progress and development trends in printing technology. As the field becomes more and more complex and specialised, so does the need increase for effective signposting to aid the interpreters, translators, engineers, technicians, students, scientists and all others connected with the graphic arts.
The requirements of practice were given primary consideration in the compilation of the material. Book Description
Noted filmmaker Jesús Salvador Treviño participated in and documented the most important events in the Mexican American civil rights movement of the late 1960's and early 1970's: the farm workers' strikes and boycotts, the Los Angeles school walk-outs, the Chicano Youth Conference in Denver, the New Mexico land grant movement, the Chicano moratorium against the Vietnam War, the founding of the La Raza Unida Party, and the first incursion of Latinos in the media. Coming of age during the turmoil of the sixties, Treviño was on the spot to record the struggles to organize students and workers into the largest social and political movements in the history of Latino communities in the United States.
As important as his documentation of historical events is his self-reflection and chronicling of how these events helped to shape his own personality and mission as one of the most renowned Latino filmmakers. Treviño's beautifully written memoir is fascinating for its detail, insight, and heretofore undisclosed reports from behind the scenes by a participant and observer who is able to strike the balance between personal reflection and reportage.
Customer Reviews:
A must for young Chicanos.......2001-10-30
Names and stories about so called "Role Models" fall short in front of this personal memoirs of Jesus Salvador Trevino.
This book is a great collection of personal experiences and success in a society where not being "white" means to swim against the current.
I highly recommend it for teachers to share with their students.
Each page carries a message that says: Yes, it can be done!
