    Book Description

The narrator of this wonderfully perceptive, highly entertaining tale of love and loss is a middle-aged German composer who writes serious avant-garde music, but makes a living writing theme music for television. When Judit, an ambitious young cello player from Budapest (whose mother was once the composer's lover and who may or may not be his daughter), shows up on his doorstep, he agrees to take her in while she studies at the conservatory in Munich.
Judit's presence evokes memories of a far different time for the composer, when life was about art and his biggest concern was finding a room for an afternoon tryst. When our protagonists set out for the composer's house in southern France, where he will finish his opera and she will master her instrument, it gradually becomes clear that this young woman is playing more than the cello. Funny, ironic, and oddly illuminating.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-03-20

I truly wanted to love this book and thought I would because I love stories with music in the plot. However, this book had no plot. I couldn't remember from one page to the next what happened on the last page. It seemed to be a lot of rambling with run-on sentences that could take up a whole page and paragraphs that went on and on page after page!

For the first time in several years, I slammed a book shut without finishing it. I don't know if I'll ever try to read it again. It just made no sense to me. I kept going back to the synopsis on the dust jacket and I didn't find anything in the book even remotely like the synopsis.

I made it to page 43...chapter 8. Chapter 7 was one page long...a single sentence. That was all I could take of the book. Perhaps there was something later in the book, but I didn't have any motivation to read one more page. There was just nothing to hold my attention. It was a great sleeping aid.

I hate to say this, but this book was a waste of good paper.

5 out of 5 stars Caps Off An Excellent Series.......2004-06-27

They're always saying that you can't judge a book by its cover, but effective and attractive cover art can go a long way toward selling a novel. I first became aware of Mindy Klasky's "Glasswright" series two years ago while shopping at Safeway and was immediately intrigued. At Mindy's web site I read the first chapter of each book then available, and I knew they were going to be very good. But, I learned long ago never to purchase an "in progress" series, for the sake of my own sanity.

When "The Glasswrights' Master" finally came out, I plowed through all five books in the span of a single week. Certainly, you'll want to read the others before this one. I'm hoping that the comments I'm about to make, as I briefly summarize the whole series to put "Master" in context, will not give away too many of the key plot points for those who are new to these books.

If there's one overriding theme of the "Glasswright" series that stands out for me, it has to be the vital importance of making the right choices, for the right reasons. My favorite character easily has to be the main protagonist, Rani Trader. She is a textbook example of how bad choices can destroy lives. In the first book of the series, as a somewhat rebellious 13-year-old girl, she fails to follow the prime tenet of Morenian society: "Mind your caste". This continues to be an issue throughout the entire series.

For, in the Kingdom of Morenia, the social hierarchy is rigidly enforced into five castes, or levels of privilege. At the bottom are the Touched: the grunt laborers, servants and farmers. Next are the merchants, then the guildspeople, followed by the soldiers. At the top are the priests and nobles. One can tell a person's rank by the number of syllables in his or her name. Thus, when Rani Trader's family buys her into the glasswrights' guild at great cost, she becomes Ranita Glasswright. During the time she is in hiding for her life, in that first book, she becomes first Rai of the Touched and then Ranimara of the soldiers. Throughout much of the series she serves as a virtual member of the royal family, a valued friend and confidant of King Halaravilli.

This earns her the opprobrium of her legions of detractors, who scornfully label her a "caste jumper". For only one other person in Morenian history has ever been a member of all five castes, and that was the legendary First Pilgrim Jair, the founder of the ruling dynasty of Morenia. Who is Rani to liken herself to him?

By this fifth book, Rani, now in her mid-twenties, has grown greatly. She started out as being almost amoral, a desperate opportunist who would beg, steal or even kill to further her cause. Her loyalties were confused, as she bounced from one faction to the next, trying to sort out their mutually inimical aims. And yet, her conscience bothered her, forcing her take the side of the future King Hal, even at the cost of her own treasonous brother's life. She had begun to learn to do what was right.

As a loyal subject with excellent people skills, thanks to her trader background, she has managed to drive some very hard bargains throughout the series, each time to benefit King Hal and Morenia as they pass through various crises. And yet, sometimes people end up being hurt badly, Rani having picked the lesser of two evils. Not everyone understands her reasons. Not everyone wants to give her the chance to explain, or to make good, if it's within her power to do so.

By the start of Book Five, Rani has many enemies who would love to kill her. There is the mysterious Fellowship of Jair, who wish to unite the Five Kingdoms under the long-foretold Royal Pilgrim. There are the Glasswrights, who live in exile in the fanatical Kingdom of Brianta, blaming her for the destruction of their guild in Morenia. Of course, she blames herself more. Then there are Rani's former love interests, such as Crestman and Tovin the Player. She has driven them away, due to her single-minded devotion to King Hal and the art of glass making.

By the end of the first chapter of "The Glasswrights' Master", Rani, King Hal and a few of their most loyal friends are fleeing the country, driven out by the Fellowship, who are bringing their plans to fruition. Rani faces her most difficult choices yet: will she have to give up her long-cherished aim to become a master glasswright and reestablish her guild in Morenia? For that will surely come to pass, if she fails to face down the Fellowship at last, and remains in exile. And yet, confronting the Fellowship could very easily prove fatal.

Now, more than ever before, Rani will have to learn to put the interests of others above her own. Even if it means making the ultimate sacrifice.

Some important questions are finally answered as well. Who is this Royal Pilgrim, and precisely what role will he or she play in shaping the fate of the Five Kingdoms? What about those mysterious voices in Rani's head, present since Book Four? Will either she or King Hal ever find true happiness, driven as they have been by sometimes heartless political necessity?

The ending, while in some ways predictable, was still eminently satisfying, and I found myself rereading the final chapter and savoring it. However, there are still some loose ends, a few different groups or individuals for whom I can ask "what happens to them next?"

For now, Mindy has wrapped the series up, but I'm hoping she revisits Morenia later. Until then, I'll just have to reread the existing books. All in all, they're imaginative and well written. "The Glasswrights' Master" is no exception.

                    4 out of 5 stars a bit rushed.......2004-06-23

What surprises the reader in this final book in the Glasswright series is what I perceive to be a somewhat abrupt switch from a character-driven to a plot-driven adventure. The previous books explored with subtlety and insight the inner development of the main characters. We have seen Rani making choices, sometimes bad choices, and learning to live with their consequences; we have seen Hal growing into a powerful and committed king who has to sacrifice personal desires for the good of the realm. The author's attention to the increasing complexity of the characters' personalities drove the series forward at a more sedate - but thoroughly justified - pace. That meant that all sorts of loose ends which had been left hanging in the previous books, had to be resolved here too fast and sometimes too conveniently. At the end of the book, I felt as if several chapters were missing from the middle. The author was in too great a hurry to get out of the way several characters which would have deserved more attention or explanation of the why's and how's of their respective development and fate.

That said, the whole series is undeniably very good, and the characters unforgettable. I agree with the other reviewers that, for the best reading experience, the books have to be read in order - less because of possible obscurity, and more because it would be a pity not to know them all.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful and emotional conclusion to a fine series.......2004-06-19

                    (Spoilers)

This stirring conclusion to a magnificent series is a powerful read that doesn't let you put it down!

The conclusion to the beautiful Glasswright's Series is a fitting end - all the loose ends are tied up, and the characters go through changes that help them, hurt them, and push them towards the finale.

The only recommendation I can make is that you read the other Glasswright's books before this - don't read it as a "stand alone" novel. Some details may be lost on you - such as exactly why Crestman is so furious with Rani, or the details of Rani and Tovin's past - if you do not read the entire series. Also, the end of the book is all the more bittersweet if you've known the characters for all 5 books.

The characters are beautifully written, and they are believeable to the core. Rani, Ranita, Rai... whatever you choose to call her - she is the remarkable hero in this tale. The king, Hal, goes through mental anguish that he thought he had overcome previously. The return of his rhymes is a chilling reminder of his fragile state, and Crestman's proclamation that Hal simply cannot exist without Rani have a ring of truth that chills the reader.

The imagery in the book of the Thousand Gods "visits" to Rani are vivid, and you can taste/hear/smell/feel/see the visions as clearly as Rani does.

I highly recommend this book to all Glasswright fans - if you haven't read the series yet, pick it up now!

5 out of 5 stars well written and enthralling fantasy.......2004-06-02

The kingdom of Morenia ruled by King Hal is under siege by a fleet of Liantine ships blockading the harbor and a Briantan army surrounding the city. A battering ram is being used to open the gates to the city while the army of Morenia is getting ready to fight. Their efforts are doomed by traitors from within the castleso King Hal, his wife, Rani Trader and a few trusted allies flee through a secret passage shown to them by a Touched woman.

The Fellowship of Jair, a secret cabal of men and women located in every kingdom in the world engineered The King's downfall because he chose to oppose them. The fugitives flee to Sarmonia where they hope to have the aid of the King and his army to win back Hal's throne. The Fellowship gets words of the group's whereabouts and make plans to kill them but Hal is a strong spokesman for his cause and Rani has powers that she doesn't know about that could change the course of battle.

This is the fifth and last book of this well written and enthralling fantasy series and it is one of the most rewarding and poignant works in the collection. All the loose ends are tied up, the ending is everything the reader could hope for but there is also sadness in THE GLASSWRIGHTS' MASTER as good people die because of the evil of a cabal of power hungry traitors. Mindy L. Klasky proves she's a world class fantasist by her ability to make the audience believe in the existence of the world where Morenia is located.

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Book.......2000-10-03

This book contains the best explaination that I have read on the idea of the True Self and False Self...ideas that are crucial for understanding many of the writings in mystical spirituality and ourselves. I have read the book four times and every time I re-read it I find something more in it.

Fr. Pennington's ability to make accessible for the layman the often specialized vocabulary and ideas of the mystic is truly outstanding.

2 out of 5 stars Way Off Base.......2000-09-02

This book has such a promising title, and Pennington would have done well to have stuck with the topic it suggests. However, Pennington cannot seem to resist inserting his own political views and revealing his own religious bias in ways that seem totally out of place in a book that promises to "uncover the direct route to happiness and peace our age so desperately seeks." Perhaps Pennington is trying to demonstrate how intrusion of the "false self" can pollute an otherwise promising discussion?

The first intrusion appears in chapter four when Pennington interrupts his otherwise valuable discussion of the "evolution of human consciousness" to criticize former President Ronald Reagan for his funding of the failed star wars project, money that "could have funded a raised standard of living for every person on this planet." While I find this criticism valid (although a jarring turn in the tone of the discussion), it is completely overturned in the next chapter when in the midst of a very negative description of modern childhood, Pennington wonders "if the anti-child atmosphere of our age of birth control and abortion might not invade the womb and infect the developing child." It is odd that an author so concerned with the standard of living for the world's population would support a belief system that has done so much damage to the world's economic health and quest for physical survival. What is the cost of feeding, clothing, and educating a population out of control? Certainly Reagan's sins pale by comparison, and Pennington's criticisms become shamelessly hypocritical. Of course, he is feeding us the typical party line of the Catholic Church, a view that is anti-woman, anti-environment, and anti-humanity. But what can you expect from a world view that not only views women as unable to assume leadership positions within the church, but also unable to govern their own bodies?

Pennington also takes the time to criticize modern Biblical scholarship, referring to attempts to approach the Bible without religious bias as "ridiculous and arrogant humanistic and anthropocentric dissections of the Sacred Text." Pennington would do well to read William Johnston's newest book (which I did just prior to my unfortunate encounter with this one)in which Johnston finds value in such studies once they have been reintegrated into a religious context. Pennington instead offers this profound advice: "We need not waste any time giving any attention to these..."

There is some valuable discussion in this book when Pennington sticks to his subject, but there are too many tares growing among this wheat. I could only recommend this book to the patient and mature reader who is able to recognize chaff when he or she sees it.

I wish this book would go back into print. It is a very high-quality puzzle-type exercise. Took a couple of weeks and was never boring. Complete with a King Kong... Used to keep my completed version in my office until the cleaning lady smashed it by accident...

At over for feet high, the finished building is one of my prized possessions. I found mine at a flea market and, as the book was old, the center crease in the pages needs particular attention to avoid a pronounced ridge at about the fortieth floor. Reinforce the crease from behind and press it flat and it should come out ok. The addition of some foil trim at the top make for a really sharp model of the landmark.

The very first paragraph will captivate most readers. There is a lot of life and a little magic in the author's introduction to his autobiography. I had never heard of Satish Kumar, and most people probably never will. But the very idea that a man would walk virtually around the world carrying a message of peace, says a lot about the potentiality of mankind. In my own view, a pilgrim was someone on a spiritual odyssy who brought peace as a consequence of their actions. Kumar seems to have accomplished this in a reverse manner. This is, to me, evidenced by his motives and in his writing. His story is well paced and and an enjoyable read. It is educational and informative - in a delightful way, where other books omit translations and accurate portrayals of custom, they are not lacking here. His honesty about himself requires the reader to at least attempt witholding judgement 'till the final page is turned. I found myself traped, particularly early in the book, in preconcieved notions about the mans emotional lacking. I even found the book to be rather emotionally flat, during the first half, but it did not dampen my desire to see it through. In retrospect, it seems that Kumar treated the aspect of the books emotional content as a reflection of his life's emotional content at the time. As the book comes to closer to it's conclusion, the author finds his heart. The finale chapters will leave you in awe, whether you agree with the author or not, you will know that he found his heart.

I discovered Satish Kumar when I read his interview in "The Sun" magazine. His discussion there prompted me to buy this book. I'm glad I did.

Kumar writes, "sacred stories heal wounded souls" (p. 173). In this autobiographical collection of "sacred stories," Kumar describes his own way through life as "a journey without destination . . .it was as much an inner journey as an outward one . . .it was a journey into detachment . . .I was a wanderer, wandering through life . . .living from day to day, from inspiration to inspiration" (p. 100). In Chapter 5 of his book, Kumar remembers his 1962 peace walk, without carrying money or eating meat, from Delhi to Moscow, Paris, London, and then to Washington, or in his words, from "Ghandi's grave to Kennedy's grave" (p. 103), and then back to Delhi in 1964, where "the moment of beginning and ending became one" (p. 103). Along the way, there are notable encounters with Khrushchev, Bertrand Russell, and Martin Luther King. Later, in Chapter 9, Kumar recalls his friendship with E. F. Schumacher ("Small is Beautiful"). It seems Kumar finds a "sacred story" everywhere, in milking his cows, Radha and Hazel ("for me," he writes, "milking was meditation"), to reflecting upon trees: "How much I can learn from a tree! The tree is my church, the tree is my temple, the tree is my mantra, the tree is my poem and my prayer" (p. 178). This book encourages the wanderer in each of us to search out our own "sacred stories."
