Book Description
Barbara Pym is a master at capturing the subtle mayhem that takes place in the apparent quiet of the English countryside. Fifty-something sisters Harriet and Belinda Bede live a comfortable, settled existence. Belinda, the quieter of the pair, has for years been secretly in love with the town's pompous (and married) archdeacon, whose odd sermons leave members of his flock in muddled confusion. Harriet, meanwhile, a bubbly extrovert, fends off proposal after proposal of marriage. The arrival of Mr. Mold and Bishop Grote disturb the peace of the village and leave the sisters wondering if they'll ever return to the order of their daily routines. Some Tame Gazelle, first published in Britain nearly 50 years ago, was the first of Pym's nine novels.
Customer Reviews:
How English.......2005-02-18
The characters present at the opening of the book are the young curate, Belinda, and Harriet. Harriet's manner is blunt and jolly. Belinda and Harriet Bede are sisters. Neither has married.
Belinda loved the archdeacon when she was twenty. The archdeacon is miffed because Lady Clara Boulding attends the church of a rival, Edward Plowman. Lady Clara is the daughter of an earl and the widow of a member of parliament. The archdeacon tends to hate the garden party as an event.
Edith Livesidge, one of the local residents, is probably called splended because she is tough and wiry and is apt to dig vigorously in her garden. Agatha Hoccleve, wife of the archdeacon, has very good clothes. The servants call the archdeacon the Venerable Hoccleve. Lady Clara Boulding is to open the party officially. Opening parties is her chief recreation. Edward Plowman thinks the archdeacon enjoys showing off his knowledge.
Next the wife of the archdeacon goes off on vacation and the sisters, and probably everyone else in the village, take note of the leave-taking. Harriet has a tendancy to spoil all of the young curates. This becomes significant to the plot in two ways. First there is the marriage of the current office-holder. Then there is the visit of a former young curate who, amusingly, has managed to become both a bishop and a missionary to Africa.
During the absence of the archdeacon's wife, his friends, librarians, Mr. Mold and Dr. Parnell, pay a visit. Harriet and Belinda have a very successful dinner party for them and for others. Harriet receives a marraige proposal from Mr. Mold, which is declined. The bishop later proposes to Belinda, and that too is declined. Belinda explains that she is not in love with the suitor.
The star of the novel is Belinda. She is kind, dowdy, and self-conscious.
Not up to the usual Pym standard.......2001-12-03
A first novel--and it shows. Has all the charm of Barbara Pym's best work (Excellent Women, No Fond Return of Love) but is marred by narrative clumsiness and (frankly) lousy technique: characters appear out of nowhere, conversations start one place and end in another, etc. Skip this and focus on her later, great work.
Solid provincial light comedy.......2001-10-27
Some Tame Gazelle is an early Barbara Pym
novel, but her many strengths are fully in evidence. She shows that she knows her way with provincial village life, which she portrays in neither a fond haze nor quite in the harsh light of reality, but in some alternative dimension, like our own, but somehow a bit more kind. The protagonists are two "Pym women", middle-aged, content, educated middlebrows, shrewd, amusing, humble and yet quite self-possessed. The central joke--"spinsters" doting on the local clergy--is soon lost in the subtle but larger point: these are two women who live life largely on their own terms, affectations and all. This is a good read, not at all an "early" novel. My only real criticism is that the plot seems to spin a bit in mid-novel, but it rights itself again by the end.

Touching and funny.......2001-04-23
In the early chapters of "Some Tame Gazelles" we are taken on a "Pym moments" romp through the day-to-day lives of the spinster sisters, Belinda and Harriet Bede. Timid, sentimental Belinda (one of Pym's "Excellent Women")elder of the two, a faithful church worker, has loved the peevish, married Archdeacon Henry Hoccleve ("dear Henry") for over 30 years. Belinda quotes 18th Century poets, wears "sensible" shoes and longs for "some sympathetic person to whom she could say that Dr. Johnson had been so right when he had said that all change is of itself an evil." Plump ("attractive in a fat Teutonic way"),jolly and style-conscious Harriet, in her middle fifties, has a fondness for young curates to whom she serves boiled chicken suppers and makes presents of hand-knitted socks and home-made jellies. We meet: The Reverend Edgar Donne, the latest in a long line of young curates fussed over by Harriet; Edith Liversidge ("a kind of decayed gentlewoman"), the disheveled, blunt-speaking neighbor with an interest in sanitation arrangements; the dreary, snobbish Connie Aspinall, who basks in the memory of her glory days when she was companion to Lady Grudge of Belgrave Square ("a kind of relation of one of Queen Alexandra's Ladies-in-Waiting"); Miss Prior, the touchy sewing woman, in a tender and humorous episode involving cauliflower cheese; the melancholy Count Ricardo Bianco, who on a regular basis offers proposals of marriage to Harriet. There is Archdeacon Hoccleve, the object of Belinda's devotion ("her passion had mellowed into a comfortable feeling more like the cosiness of a winter evening by the fire than the uncertain rapture of a spring morning"), whose standoffish behavior and proclivity for choosing unsuitable prayers and for preaching obscure literary sermons no one understands win him little favor among the people in his parish. And there are more matchless Pym characters set against a quintessential Pym story, touching and funny and quite wonderful.

Glass artisan Rani's loyalty to the Glasswright Fellowship is tested when she's asked to kill the Morenian Queen.
Customer Reviews:
Plodding and dull.......2006-01-09
I almost always finish a book once I've started it, but with this one, I could barely get through two pages before I found something better to do. Like watching paint dry.
In the first book, I thought Rani's actions when her fellow Glasswrights were being mutilated daily were despicable, and that's why I couldn't get into this book. I sympathized with the Glasswrights guild. They, especially the thumbless journeymen, have every reason to loathe her and want revenge; I was with them one hundred percent. Rani barely seems to have a conscience most days, certainly she doesn't let murder or the fate of her former fellow apprentices bother her overly much, she just goes on her merry way, being everyone's puppet.
It's hard to get into a book when you're well on your way to despising the doormat of a main character. It really doesn't help that the other characters, her friends, are just as unsympathetic and in many cases, boring.
All that aside, the narration was so slowly paced and so tedious that I nearly fell asleep any time I tried to keep reading past a couple pages. It was a struggle that, in the end, wasn't worth it. I returned this one to the library unfinished, and was thrilled that I hadn't shelled out actual money for this waste of time.
The Glasswright's Test.......2004-01-31
I loved this series! I like books with heroines in them and anymore it hard to find them that are not made to look good for the guys. These books are about a young girl who finds herself put into questionable situations and does what she believes is the best course of action. Being so young and naive has her at an disadvantage of not knowing what the true scheme of things are and she does not understand why everyone she loves and trusts now hates her for trying to do what she thought was right. This story shows how she grows and matures into a couragous, and strong woman, with the help of her new friends. I definitly reccomend these books, it makes for a fascinating world of reading. Looking forward to the fourth.
Rani takes charge.. or does she?.......2003-11-03
Rani is certainly not the girl she used to be in 'Apprentice', and the plot gets ever more complex. The love interests are getting more fleshed out, and once again, Rani gets out of an impossible situation. That's the good part.
On the other hand. Rani seemed caught in circumstances beyond her control, whereas I'd've preferred that Rani get much smarter. Why bring the baby in the first place, for example?
It also seemed too convenient for Rani to get out of things by absorbing a bit of magic power here and there.
It'll be interesting to see how things play out from here. I'd like to see more of Mareka and Tovin too.
Good character development........2003-08-13
I don't believe that Mindy L. Klasky let the characterization "slip." She actually developed the characters. One can not read a series about a teenager, and not expect the character to mature and change. The characters of this story started off as some, naive children, and somme, children trying to find their path in life. The Glasswrights' Test has to be my favorite edition in the series. Not only was it well written, it was enticing from the cover art, to the description on the back.
I reccomend everyone, including those who are not interested by science fiction to read this book.
Rani's Impossible Task.......2003-07-16
When Rani trader was thirteen-years-old she witnessed a horrible murder, a murder she was suspected to commit. As a result of this her guild, which was responsible for creating the beautiful glass that decorated Morenia, was all but destroyed by the kings soldiers. The glasswrights fled to Brianta and have learned to hate Rani's name. Years have past and now, more than anything, Rani longs to be reconnected with her broken guild, The Glasswrights. That's why she is delighted when she receives a letter from them, asking her if she wants to become a master at her trade. Rani agrees, bringing Princess Berylina, an exiled Liantine noble who has the ability to feel the thousand gods all around her, Berylina's priest, and Rani's fellow glass maker and lover Tobin Player. Unfortunately there are darker matters at stake here. The Brotherhood of Jair, a secret organization that Rani is a member of, is controlling the glasswrights guild. And if Rani doesn't do what the brotherhood asks of her, she will never become a glasswright and someone might die. Now Rani faces a horrible decision, will she murder her Queen or face the consequences.
The Glasswrights Test is ever better than the other three books (The Glasswrights Apprentice, The Glasswrights Progress, and The Glasswrights Journeyman) in this wonderful series by Mindy L. Klasky. One thing I discovered in this book is real strong character development. Rani finally starts to take responsibility for her actions and finally understands why other people seem to be seeking revenge against her. She emerges as a truly strong woman by the end of this book, a result of the impossible tasks she is put up against. I was also happy to see Princess Berylina, take a stronger role in this book. She is no longer the shy dimwitted child but a devoted and complex woman. Ever Hal, who spends so little time in the spotlight in this novel, seems more like the king he was destined to become. The new country of Brianta is an interesting place that reminded me a lot of the holy lands in our world.
In conclusion this has got to be Mindy L. Klasky's best work yet and it doesn't end here! The final book in the series, The Glasswrights Master, comes out in June 2004. The ending is quite a cliffhanger and I can't wait to see what will happen to Rani, Hal, Mair, Crestman, and the rest of the characters next. I recommend this book to all fans of the Glasswright Saga.

Book Description
At last, the United Federation of Planets and the Romulan Star Empire have agreed to meet on neutral ground to attempt to resolve the tangle of intrigue and conspiracy that began with the hijacking of the U.S.S. Intrepid many years ago -- but the meeting may be as dangerous as the war they hope to avoid.
As a show of good faith, the crew of the legendary Starship Enterprise has been ordered to attend the talks. In their informal charge is Romulan renegade Ael, the wanted fugitive who, with Kirk, served as a catalyst of the current troubles. Kirk must represent the interests of the Federation first and foremost, but the best approach to an agreement remains muddled in the ever-shifting Romulan order.
And the visiting Romulan party is as fractious and divided as their troubled world. Among the Romulan nobles in attendance are the hero and popular Senator Arrhae, who secretly helped rescue Dr. Leonard McCoy from a Romulan execution, and the very men and women who put McCoy on trial for treason -- and tried to carry out the sentence.
As Kirk and crew attempt to renegotiate a delicate peace, and Romulans attempt to restore their tarnished honor, it becomes increasingly apparent that their only course of action is to prepare for war!
Customer Reviews:
Fool me once, shame on you..........2005-04-22
That line from the Original Series is so appropriate for this book series. I read Swordhunt because I had really enjoyed the first two in the series. Then, when I hit the "continued in Star Trek #96," I was so outraged, it took me almost five years to buy #96. Then, I find out not only did "Honor Sword" not finish the storyline, no conclusion has *yet* been published, I couldn't believe that I'd let them fool me again.
Well, until the publishers stop printing books piecemeal--and in very expensive pieces, I might add--I'm done buying Star Trek novels.
GREAT BOOK! BUT WHERE'S THE ENDING?????.......2002-05-11
If not for the "To be Continued" ending, this book would have been rated 5 stars! I loved this story as well as the other 3 on this same subject. But I can't believe that this was to be continued! Where is the rest of the story now? If I'd known that this last book was a continuation (without the follow up book even in the works yet!), I would never have purchased it!
Love the story, but where's the rest of it?.......2001-10-25
After re-reading MY ENEMY, MY ALLY and THE ROMULAN WAY (thus reminding myself once again why I consider Diane Duane the best writer of quality Trek fiction), I tore through SWORDHUNT and HONOR BLADE, only to be outraged (as so many of my fellow reviewers have been) by a "to be continued" at the end. Since the first two books were complete stories unto themselves, I had no reason to expect such a nasty shock. If I'd had any inkling that the story wasn't yet finished, I'd have waited before reading #3 and #4.
Where is the last third of this one, giant novel that's been so cynically sold in separate pieces, and when may we expect to see it in print?
Tired of seperated novels.......2001-01-12
After having read reviews of several books that could have been a dynamite single novel and instead were seperated into multiple books for possible money making reasons by the publisher/author I have decided not to purchase any more Star Trek novels that end with "To Be Continued...." Anyone with similar thoughts please write to the publishing companies. Let them know we feel abuse, robbed and are tired of getting short stories when we pay for full length novels.
Excellent series.......2000-12-31
Honor Blade and Sword Hunt are really one story, and at that, the story isn't yet concluded. But it is an excellent story, perhaps the best Trek I have read in a while. The story, like others by Duane, is really about several people, not just Enterprise crew. The Romulan characters are examined just as closely as the humans. Character development is a key part of the enjoyment, but there is plenty of action too. While reading books #1 and #2 would be somewhat helpful, you can start with Sword Hunt and be able to follow it.

Book Description
"Everyone dies, but no one is dead," goes the Tibetan saying. It is with these words that Advice on Dying takes flight. Using a seventeenth-century poem written by a prominent scholar-practitioner, His Holiness the Dalai Lama draws from a wide range of traditions and beliefs to explore the stages we all go through when we die, which are the very same stages we experience in life when we go to sleep, faint, or reach orgasm (Shakespeare's "little death").
The stages are described so vividly that we can imagine the process of traveling deeper into the mind, on the ultimate journey of transformation. In this way, His Holiness shows us how to prepare for that time and, in doing so, how to enrich our time on earth, die without fear or upset, and influence the stage between this life and the next so that we may gain the best possible incarnation. As always, the ultimate goal is to advance along the path to enlightenment. Advice on Dying is an essential tool for attaining that eternal bliss.

Only moderately helpful.......2000-08-18
I have worked from my own home office for over 5 years and I'm always looking for clever ideas for making my space my productive and pleasant. I was disappointed with this book. It is a showcase for the author's home office, which involved construction and landscaping. I am of more modest means, and I was looking for very PRACTICAL ideas. The tone of the book is more of "look at what a wonderful job I have done" and while the author's office is nice, it is not the kind of project I have in my near future. If you are just thinking about your first home office and you would like someone to explain the basics, this would be a good starter book. But even the technology and equipment information is out of date -- those things change so fast! As long as you don't expect too much, this has some good information.
How to furnish a home office with sanity........1998-06-13
Do you like furniture? I hate it. But woe be to the home office that doesn't have some. That's why this picture book is eons ahead of other books that rhapsodize about the home office but don't show it.
With its hundreds of photographs and comprehensive text, cases of real people and their transitions to home offices, this tome goes beyond surface considerations. It includes checklists for planning your own home office, and even entire sections on equipment such as computers, lighting, copiers, and on-line services. OK, there's a wishbook quality to it, but home offices frequently start out as dreams before they come crashing down to earth.
