Book Description
Richard Bausch is a master of the intimate moment, of the ways we seek to make lasting connections to one another and to the world. Gew writers evoke the complexities of love as subtly, and few capture the poignancy of the sudden insight or the rhythms of ordinary conversation with such delicacy and humor. To read these twelve stories--of love and loss, of families and strangers, of small moments and enormous epiphanies--is to be reminded again of the power of short fiction to thrill and move us, to make us laugh, or cry. In these profound glimpses into the private fears, joys, and sorrows of people we know, we find revealed a whole range of human experience, told with extraordinary force, clarity, and compassion.

Rich Slices of Modern Life.......2003-02-19
Richard Bausch in these stories--of an older men with younger women, of a woman recovering from a dysfunctional relationship who hooks up with a horrible golfer who persuades himself he is good, of a man with low self-esteem who stumbles out of a bar drunk one morning to save a busload of children, of a man who wins the lottery only to face the final anomie of life as loss--takes somewhat downtrodden and mundane middle-to-lower class characters and reveals them in their secret glory. He has a way of fully seizing an everyday situation and revealing to us its depths, sometimes switching character point of view within the same story. The stories have the opposite effect of Chinese food according to the culinary cliche: they may seem on the light side while being mentally digested, but in retrospect they confer literary nutrition--staying, like the best fiction, with you long after the book is closed; these then are stories whose characters, if not the most memorable, are so real, so deeply sliced from the pie of modern American life, that their quandries and partial resolutions, their fictional or fictionalized lives, tend to merge with one's own memories.
A Master Storyteller.......2002-01-27
I first heard of Richard Bausch when he praised some work of Janis Ian's. I went to see what kind of writer he was, and was pleasantly informed. He really develops his characters. They are real to the reader, and you can be sympathetic toward them even as they bumble and stumble through life ... just like we all do. Not alot of fun & happy endings here, but the stories will touch your heart in a good way.
Grief that makes you happy?.......2000-08-29
Seems an oxymoron, but anyone who's read other books by Bausch knows it isn't. Bausch portrays deeply painful situations with humor and a sense of abiding compassion for his characters. You will put this book down in pain, both in empathy for its characters and in sorrow that it's over. A wonderful read.
Average.......2000-07-10
The high points in this book of stories were attained with some perceptive insights about human relations and the human condition. However, they were not sufficient to overcome an average book.
Chaotic relations.......2000-06-03
Bausch's stories provide the certainty that you can eavesdrop on any life and find something worth hearing. The stories may not cheer you up, but they'll make you glad you read them.

Best ignored.......2007-09-20
This arc on the whole, is essentially a extremely unbelievable and forced (according to Wiki, he JMS didn't intend for Gwen to bang Norman's brain's out SANS PROTECTION!) retcon of a well established and much loved character(s), that frankly makes little, to no sense.
Let me defend JMS for a sec though: the idea of his arch enemy shagging his first, and strongest love (which results in twins), has potential for alot of angst and development of the rivalry between the two. However having Gwen do the dirty willingly cause she's attracted to his manliness and wrinkly neck(?!), come on! Frankly if it had to be done, I would prefer it that he raped her (yes I know, but it would make more sense).
Look all I'm saying is being a good writer involves more then just pissing on everything (because thats what JMS does in this arc, anyway you look at it) that has come before for short-term shock and entertainment value, mmm-kay? You can add to it, you can adapt it, you can do a great number of things with Ret-cons, but YOU SHOULD NOT PISS ON IT's HEAD just for shock value! Sorry.
PROS:
-Lotsa fighting, drawn well by Mike Deodato.
CONS:
-Even ignoring the controversial changes, the arc itself is packed way too much with day time soapy dialogue, overly melodramatic scenes and way too much forced drama and "shocking" revelations.
Please buy something, anything, else that involves Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker (Spider-man: Blue or the The Death of Gwen Stacy or Marvels or any of the old issues) first and try and rate this 5 stars.
The story that got me into Spider-Man!.......2007-08-03
I had just seen the movie on DVD in 2005 and was in a sweat to know more about the wall-crawler. So I picked up every Spider-Man volume I could find in the local library. I read this one first, and I was hooked.
First off, the art. I LOVE realistic art, so this was eye candy. I never liked John Romita Jr (though his father is one of my all-time favorite artists). I wish Mike Deodata had drawn more.
As for the story, I enjoyed it very much. I think these people who complain that it "tarnishes" Gwen are chavenistic morons stuck in the Victorian Age. Sometimes good people make mistakes. Gwen and Norman was completely understandable, and I am not shallow enough to brand Gwen's character as a "fallen woman" because of it. Good lord, I thought Scarlett Letters went out in the 18th Century.
Without this story, I might never have gotten into the Spider-Man comics. For people extremely well-versed in Spider-Lore it might be disturbing. But for people who don't live in their mother's basement, it's one heck of a read!
Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 8: Sins Past .......2007-08-02
Quite possibly the WORST Spider-Man story I have ever read. Take it from a real Spidey fan who's read more issues of Amazing Spider-Man than he hasn't. Gwen's death has a special place in the hearts of every Spider-Man. JMS just took that respect and specialness and drug it through the mud. The besides being an absolutely AWFUL concept and idea, the story conflicts with continuity at several points. It destroys the "tell all" type of relationship Peter and Mary Jane have. And above all else, it degrades Gwen Stacy and completely sours her reputation. I can't emphasize how truly horrible this story is. Please: if you haven't read it, don't bother. It will only taint your memory of that sweet little blond named Gwen. And if you have read it: Promptly forget it and disregard it as I have.
J. Michael Straczynski, hack writer.......2006-11-17
Spider-man is not Babylon 5. People care about Spider-man. A beloved character like Gwen Stacy should be left alone - she should not be part of a new story just to be defiled. The death of Gwen Stacy is one of the most significant, and greatest, stories in Spidey history. If J. Michael Straczynski wants to be remembered as the person who all but destroyed Spidey, then he is doing a fine job. Since writing "Sins Past", JMS has given Spidey a new costume, new powers, and brought us the unbelievably stupid "the Other" storyline - all just amateurish attempts to get more readers. The next Amazing Spider-man writer will have a great time trying to overwrite JMS's Babylon 5 take on the character.
Make mine DC instead...Nuff said!.......2006-09-17
Here we go again, Straczynski decides to alter the affectionate history of Gwen Stacey for Spidey fans. To make a long story short, through flashbacks, we learn that Gwen had a brief affair with Norman Osborn, because she is attracted to the power that Norman wields...eh? What happened to the undying love that was established between Gwen and Peter during the early runs in the Amazing Spider-man?
While in Paris, unknown to Peter, she gives birth to twins belonging to Norman. Through a growth chamber, the twins rapidly age. Under Norman's tutelage, he educates and trains the twins to fight and hate both Peter Parker and Spider-man. The twins think Peter is there father who abandon them, and Spider-man killed their mother Gwen.
The adult twins, Sarah and Gabriel, head to New York to kill both Spider-man and Peter Parker, not knowing that Peter Parker is Spider-man. Spidey fight the twins, establish that Peter Parker is not their father but is indeed Norman Osborn and that they have been lied to by Norman.
There are so many holes in this plot that I don't know where to begin. It is clearly established in the Revenge of the Green Goblin tpb that Norman believes he has no heir. Here is his exact quote..."I have no heir, my son is dead...and my grandson Normie is much too young to carry on my stead". I guess he forgot that Gwen bore him two twins. Hey Straczynski and Marvel editors, get you facts and continuity straight before trying to rewrite Spidey history.
I guess Straczynski wants to leave his vision of HIS Spider-man as he best sees fits. Check out Spider-man's The Other storyline to see what I mean. I guess some other writer will hopefully clean up this mess after Straczynski leaves the Spider-man series. No wonder Babylon 5 was cancelled. Go back and write TV shows and leave my Spider-man alone. If Marvel continues this path with Spider-man, instead of making Marvel mines...I might make it DC mines instead! Nuff said!

A Perfectionist's Perspective on The Cyborg Handbook.......2006-07-31
Introduction
The Cyborg Handbook, a compendium of articles and interviews about prosthetics and the historical impact of the human/machine "cyborgs" that the book contends now roam our planet and solar system is a wonderful read for many reasons.
The primary thinker behind this avenue of educational effort is University of California, History of Consciousness Professor Donna Haraway. Her forward to the text, Cyborgs and Symbionts: Living Together in the New World Order, intends to further feminist thought, but rises above the boring, stereotypical dualities of oppressive stories such as female victim/male violator as her prose cannot be summed up by any one ontology. However this same escape from any particular system of knowledge, this attempt to transcend analysis and instead align her text with many diverse narratives, is also her weakness. This review will address both the positive, thought-provoking aspects of the book and, on the other hand, the failings of the book which are less specific in nature and more of a literal bend.
Body
In a broad sweep The Cyborg Handbook uses Haraway's analysis of cyborg narrative to relocate the "history of cyborgs" focusing on the field of medicine, the military and aerospace industries, the anti-racist struggles of Africa, anthropology, political processes and science-fiction.
The chapters on aerospace and military cyborgs are particularly intriguing. "Cyborgs" such as fighter pilot/autopilot, the robot character in the film Short-Circuit who "transcends" its programming to become a sentient, peace activist and many others are addressed. In an interview with Patricia Cowlings, the director of the Ames-NASA psychophysiology laboratory, ones learns that Cowlings has, with the help of one other investigator, practically conquered extraterrestrial motion-sickness, a problem that has plagued NASA since the beginning of its manned space flights program. The interview showcases what may be a surprise to many liberal readers; the US "shock and awe" industry is one of the most open-minded businesses in the world today. Cowlings solution to micro-gravity, motion sickness is one clear instance of this open mindedness: NASA had been searching for decades to cure their problem of motion sickness in their astronauts; they had primarily been exploring pharmaceutical research, but after many abject failures were ready to try anything, even including alternative therapies like acupuncture. In marched Doctor Patricia Cowlings with a background in "biofeedback." A less mainstream approach to a mainstream problem has never existed. Although she used scientific methodology to develop her research, her goal was unheard of at the time. She intended to make astronauts aware of there physiology in miniscule ways. She states that she can make a trainee aware of the exterior pulse of the pinky finger of the right hand. Of course the training is accomplished in a "cyborg" fashion where body signs including blood pressure, lung efficiency, pulses, intestinal movement and about 20 others are in a continually, logically varying circuit. By changing aspects of the circuit, Cowlings can, in five hours or less, drastically reduce potential astronauts predilection to micro-gravity, motion sickness.
One of the positive aspects of much of the content of cyborg narratives that go back to WWII is an often surprising use and combination of a wide ranging vocabulary and an inventiveness of probing. These attributes, which are especially noteworthy in the foreword to the text, have resulted in greater and greater manifestations of cyborg narrative at all levels of culture even including many massive, commercial texts, such as The Matrix and its sequels.
Overall, The Cyborg Handbook is a thought provoking read, however Haraway's text and the focus of the book remains a post-modern fairy tale that is not grounded in reality. Literally, the times we live in, as are the times in which anyone at any time has lived in, are "modern" times, not post-modern; post-modernity implies that we exist in the future rather than the present. Secondly, Haraway's use of the word "hybrid" to describe her cyborg is incorrect as "hybrid" signifies literal, physical procreation, not figurative "evolution." It is not true that all or even any of us are cyborg "hybrids" because we have not been bread into organisms that are part machine. The idea that we could be bread into cyborgs seems ridiculous as the line between living forms and inert objects within whose boundaries machines fall. Clearly, we are presently humans first and foremost and anything else, cyborgs for example, later and our organic basis seems likely to continue for some time. To Harawy's credit she never actually claims that cyborgs are not human beings but, she does claim, and makes quite a strong case incidentally, that her cyborg is itself a being that is not separable into live and dead or human and machine parts.
Haraway's fairy tale is a futile attempt to dismiss one of the most beautiful philosophical products that human beings have yet created, as what "comes next" is absolutely unknowable, we cannot be sure of anything even the
"inevitability" of death. The preceding development puts Haraway's cyborg work in an ironic light because it places her cyborg stories in the tradition of male-centric, death-drive culture, which is in stark contrast to her political aspirations.
Conclusion
Harawy's theory that a new species arrived in the post WWII, "New World Order" can only be applicable to where we find ourselves if prophecy were able, which it is not. Therefore, her argument is marginal. If cyborg academia founded on Haraway's "discovery" of a new species is brought up to date perhaps theorists may reconstruct her description of an assimilation between living being and machine into an exploration of the mysterious separation between life and technology however small, cosmic or poetic.
Holding a coveted spot on my shelf.......2001-12-31
I would not suggest this book for someone looking for a quick, easy answer to the world of cyborgs. There are papers here from dozens of authors, each talking about a wholly different aspect of the cyborg - some cover the idea that technology has already turned many of us into cyborgs, others that fetuses are cyborgs, some stick with the traditional notion of the cyborg as half-man half-machine, some examine the role of the cyborg in film. It takes all kinds. And, in sturdy academic practice, some of the authors even give gentle jabs to other papers in the book, noting flaws or the overlooking of some fine point. Most of the research draws from Donna Haraway's original research into cyborgs, but there are a few people that are trying to break away from her hegemonistic mold. For a very entertaining and much needed example of this, try to find the two or three digs at Donna Haraway's definition of cyborg.
This book is one of the most invaluable resources for anyone doing serious research into the idea of the cyborg. Though there is a great interview with Clynes, co-inventer of the term "cyborg," The Cyborg Handbook won't do for primary source material. The bibliography is wildly extensive, however, and the book functions as an excellent starting point for the researcher. For those who aren't afraid to work for it, but who have a more casual interest, this book can be both a starting and ending point.
Cyborg Review.......2001-08-30
Whis book has been badly influenced by H. Figuroa's Caribbean Psychology percetion of the cyborg image.
We Have Been Assimilated.......2001-04-25
Chris Hables Gray has created an exquisitely thought provoking cross disciplinary anthology exploring the evolution of cyborg and machine intelligence on the organism called Earth. The non-linear multi-dimensional threads of what is obviously a three dimensional and linear data source leads the reader to a deeper understanding of our organic technological and social crucible of biochemistry and machine.
I am using this book as a resource for a graduate course and will probably adopt it as a textbook in the future.
Highly stimulating yet dry at times.......1998-06-03
This hefty tome is a real find for those who like a little science with their fiction. The basic premise is that in one way or another most of humanity is already a CYBORG. The definition is a bit broader than say Arnold in the Terminator and encompasses everything from fillings and eyeglasses to using a computer. I enjoyed the exploration of the CYBORG as a media icon. The technical discussions and NASA reports were a bit dry but do add to the overall credibility of the subject. This book is a real winner and anyone interested in the interaction of politics, philosophy and the human body will enjoy it.

Good introduction to buddhist psychology........2004-01-09
The book is concise, informative and easy to read. It provides basic principles of buddhist psychogy and comparison with the western therapeutic systems. A good book for beginners as well as others.

This book introduces the reader to the psychology of Theravada Buddhism, the cradle of all later Buddhist schools and traditions. In simple and clear language Frits Koster describes the fundamental teachings of Buddhism, including the Four Noble Truths, karma and rebirth. He also introduces various forms of meditation, in particular vipassana or insight meditation. After a practical explanation of the method and practice of insight meditation, he elaborates on the fruits of this practice, namely wisdom and purification of the mind.
In the final section of the book, Koster applies the principles and benefits of insight meditation to Western society in the areas of health, therapy, relationships, communication and stress. The book offers a rich and authentic introduction to Buddhist psychology and insight meditation.

Plus Ultra, this is Beyond Marbeling.......2006-10-10
An amazing book. I was familiar with the standard marbled papers you see in old (and new) books, but this book shows dozens of styles that I not only had never seen, but would not have even thought possible. Stunning works that are not at all typical "marbling." Gabriele Grunebaum's oil marbleing is really astonishing. The techniques are clearly demonstrated with photographs and diagrams. Buy this book!
Definitely the ultimate!.......2003-11-27
I was really interested i learning to do paper marbeling - had looked all around for kits to no avail so I went looking for books and came across this one. There are a number of different techniques in here: Sumonagashi, oil color, watercolor, marbeling fabric and other materials and then the last chapter is "a gallery of contemporary marbeling." For each of the technique chapters it tells you the materials you need with pictures of them in case the words/descriptions aer not enough and then that's followed by a section on "basic techniques" that are specific to that technique. The writing is clear and straight forward and there are lots of good pictures to help. Following the basic instructions there are advanced instructions. Again, with good pictures and ideas. The end of the book has fabric as well as the gallery -I'm still a beginner so I haven't played around with fabric and the things in the gallery are pretty advanced but they sure are inspirational. For now I'll have fun with paper. Great book though - it has something for the beginner as well as the more advanced artist!
The Piesta Resistance.......2002-06-18
This book has very detailed how-to information and a smorgasbord of effects. It is a beginners and an advanced book all in one. A Good buy!
200 color images of marbeling designs are inspiring........2000-10-04
Marbling of fabric and paper has intrigued artesans for centuries. The Ultimate Marbling Handbook explores the art of marbling, materials used, techniques and beautiful images of marbled color captured on paper, fabric and other materials. The colors are vivid, designs are unique and imanigative. Marble patterns fascinate, from the random stone or rock, to the colors combed into repeating patterns, no two the same.
Advanced designs of many artists are shared and techniques are explained. Diane Maurer-Mathison is a gifted artist and has authored a beautiful book suitable for the beginning to experienced marble artist.
detailed and clear instructions.......2000-06-29
I have done Suminagashi marbling for years and have been tempted to move into other types of marbling but have been unable to find good detailed information on material and techniques.
Diane Maurer-Mathison is an old hand at marbling and she shares all her wisdom here. She starts with the easiest marbling techniques and moves into patterns that would challenge a master.
Not only does she tell you where to buy the tools you need she includes detailed instructions on how to make your own tools and grind your own pigments.
She even tells you how to marble fabric, your sneakers, wood, and anything else that will stand still.
And the colored illustrations are breathtaking! I opened the book in front of a friend and her daughters. We oohhed and aahhed over it for a good twenty minutes. It is truely inspiring.
Someone put a lot of time and effort into making this a clear and easy to use guide. I reccomend it highly.

Useful and clear instructions. Attractive appearance........2003-07-04
As part of a college class, I have looked at many bookbinding titles. I haven't found any single title that contains everything useful to know about bookbinding. Anyone interested in bookbinding should look at a variety of books. This one is useful because it has an unusually large number of color illustrations. I found both the illustrations and the written instructions to be fairly easy to follow. Well worth looking at.
Save your money.......2002-04-27
After wasting my money on this book, I spend an hour counting the inaccuracies throughout the text. Sloppy workmanship evident in the photos of the bulk of the work should tip off anyone with any more than a rudimentary understanding of hand binding that the book should not be take seriously. Don't let the glossy photos fool you. The only redeeming attribute of this book is to show my students how not to do hand binding.
Bookbinding Basics.......2002-02-28
Rosati's book covers traditional European bookbinding in plentiful full color pictures. He pictures bookbinding tools, basic rules for bookbinding (such as aligning, folding, and counting the paper sheets, sawing, glueing, and etc.), sewing on cords (with a sewing frame or on a stool), sewing on tapes, and binding a simple notebook. He also describes a method I haven't seen before: binding loose sheets with nails. The pictures are the best part of the book. They're very clear and detailed. This book doesn't cover non-traditional or artistic forms of the book.

Not for do-it-yourself learning; barely adequate as a lab manual.......2007-07-27
This is, as best as I can tell, a Simmons professor's lab notes, set in type with very, very bad photographs, and bound as a book. As a manual to learn to do it oneself, this book is utterly inadequate. As a lab manual, I'd be ashamed to use it in an undergraduate level course, much a graduate level preservation course or lab. Don't bother.

IT'S THE DETAILS.......2007-07-30
I NEVER ORDERED THIS BOOK. HOPE I AM NOT BEING CHARGED FOR THIS. I'VE NEVER SEEN OR REVIEWED THIS BOOK. LOOKS GREAT, BUT I DON'T HAVE IT
Novelty Item, Not Classic.......2005-03-01
I found the book more of a novelty item than a real classic. The projects were so over-the-top as to be completely irrelevant to even the serious, experienced, and adventuresome interior decorator (A bedroom done as Napoleon's tent, complete with military uniforms?! Another bedroom right out of a Bollywood movie set?!). There were some beautiful rooms (the kitchen, the Tudor room, the Garden room, etc.), but too many rooms were tasteless, sometimes bordering on hideous. Projects were often shown in disjointed pieces, rather than as a coherent whole (example: a photo that shows only a very small corner of a floor, rather than a large enough view to actually appreciate the design). There is a good section at the back, which discusses practical matters (basic how to), but I was left wishing for more details. In particular, it would be nice to see a good discussion on layout considerations..perhaps going through a room and showing it in different stages of design. The Stencil Library is absolutely the best, and I am a big fan of Helen Morris, but this book left me sorely disappointed.
The Armed Forces Journal Book review........2000-08-08
If you are looking for a relatively easy way to add a touch of individuality to your quarter which can be removed before handover, then stencilling may be the answer. It's cheap, adaptable, and easily painted over- and can be as individual as you want! 'The Stencilled Home' by Helen Morris is a book to inspire you- full of sophisticated and imaginative ideas, each chapter focuses on a themed room, with step by step guides and stencil packs to trace.
The Artistic Stenciler book review.......2000-08-08
There's simply no other book like 'The Stenciled Home'. When you open the book you embark on an amazing and delightful tour of thirteen themed rooms of Morris' stenciling work... Instead of following a trend into trompe l'oeil stenciling, Morris' shows us the immense possibilities that simple stenciling has in the ability to literally transform the interior of your home... It is the imaginative and innovative use of stencils that make this book invaluable... This is a stenciled house from top to bottom and definitely something not to be missed.
