Customer Reviews:
Get inside the artist's head........2001-04-20
In this book, we can see the creative process taken one step further. Normally the fans see songs as the end of the creative cycle. However with this book, we can are given glimpses of the world that a song is born into. This adds a completely new dimension to these songs, it makes the songs pop into full three dimension. This is a wonderful compliment to books that show the history and birth of songs, such as Suzanne Vega's "Passionate Eye", where we see early poems, stories, and other writtings that lead up to songs that appeared on the radio.
This book is one of the beautiful boundary breakers. It is part music. It is part literature. It is part poetry. It is part prose. It is part fiction. It is part a personallity study of the authors.
If you are a fan of any of the singers in this book it would be well worth your money to purchase it just for their contribution alone.
The Real Stories Behind The Music.......2001-04-04
As both a music fan, and a sometimes writer, I'm always curious about what inspires people. Songs Without Rhyme satiates that curiousity within me.
Rosanne Cash pulled together a diverse group of musicians and asked them to write a story based on one of their songs. Whether it was one line, or the entire song, all of the stories contained within are incredible.
The material runs the gamut from verite by Rodney Crowell, Loudon Wainwright III and Steven Page to futuristic fiction by Johnny Cash, David Byrne and Rosanne Cash. At the end of each story is the song that the musicians took their inspiration from.
All in all, Songs Without Rhyme is a very well-written, well-edited book and would be a welcome addition to any music (or book) fan's collection.

Customer Reviews:
A good graphic novel with one very large cavit........2007-03-29
First off, I really like this story. The characters were fun, one or two of them were actually original, and I could understand two thirds of them. That's normally as good as it gets.
However, there were also some points in this story that I think could've been handled better.
Points for:
1. I love the art. Not as ugly as Age of Apocalypse, and much more finely colored than the early stuff. And the age of the female characters saves them from the ridiculus clothing some female supers wear in this genre.
2. I could empathize with the characters. Wither has the worst (as in worst to have, not worst thought out) power, bar none, that I have come across. He touches things and they die. Or, in hte case of nonliving organic things, turn to dust. Naturally he is less than thrilled.
As for the others- Mercury was not terribly original, except for her power (she's made of liquid metal). She wants her parents to get past her being a mutant, and she has a crush on Wither. That is it. That is the sum and total of her personality. STill, I sort of liked her.
Dust was unusual because I think she's the first Muslim character I've found in the genre. She is Afghani and very traditoinal, which was more interesting than if she had been a rebel. Her main desire is to find her mother, from whom she was separated recently.
The other three- Tag, Hellion, and Rockslide- are okay, nothing special. Hellion is the semi-required rich kid, Rockslide is the strongman, and Tag has a specialized form of mind control. None of htem made much of an impression.
3. A good plot, nothing original but not bad.
Downside:
1. Wither again. He is my favorite, but- IF HIS POWER TURNS ORGANIC MATTER TO DUST, WHY DOESN'T HE STARVE TO DEATH? Has this ever been adressed? The paradox has come up before, that a mutant's power should, technicaly, prevent their survival. But I never saw evidance that the writer noticed it.
2. If the baddie (who arrives suddenly, offering their hearts' desires and a price to match) can turn Wither's power off so easily, why couldn't the Beast do the same?
3. The Hellions are supposedly the bad kids at school. THis does not surface. Hellion has an attitude, and that's about it. However, the story opens with Emma Frost, who is most accustomed to chaos, telling Hellion that the level of rule-breaking the team had commited was unacceptable. Then the team has a run-in with the airport guards, but no one is hurt. And, truth to tell, I can't see any super-powered teenagers 'not' getting into a fight, under the circumstances. Then the entire thing vanishes. The Hellions seem to be just kids. Nice ones. Sorry, but this doesn't make sense.
All in all, a good read, but some paradoxes here.
Wanna get to know the Hellions?.......2006-11-27
This book focuses mostly on character development for Emma Frost's new Hellions. The New X-Men are off to vacation to Julian Keller's home in California. Upon arrival, Julian (Hellion) is informed that he will no longer get the family's inheritence, which will go to his older brother. This leads to Julian curiosity to wonder where his parents got all the money and is then convinced that his parents have been doing something illegal to get all the money they have. He and the New X-Men search for clues and find information on the "Kingmaker." They naively accept the Kingmaker's deals which include you do something for me, I'll do something for you. These young kids then run into problems with this mysterious man Kingmaker.
My verdict: The artist did a very good job drawing these characters. He made them colorful, playful, and all that. Another plus is that this book is no where near dark or violent, so it's acceptable for younger children. As for the story--it has little excitement and can be predictable at times. However, this book does a pretty good job as for character development, and I'm assuming that this is what the book is made for as character development goes. If you want to familiarize yourself with the Hellions, then I suggest you buy this book. But if you're looking for an exciting and intense comic story, don't get it. What I got it for, I think it did a pretty fair job. I'd say check it out, but it's definitely not a necessity. 3/5
Genuinely Entertaining.......2006-05-06
Focusing on Emma Frost's "good" Hellions, this tells the story of the Hellions who feature in the New X-Men (Academy X) series. While the plot hinges on an often used hook, it serves extremely well in letting us get to know the characters. There's also a character that reminds me of Calypso from the Twisted Metal games (which I consider a bonus).
The artwork is a "fun" cartoony, not detracting from the serious moments while at the same setting a lighter mood that is so unlike many of the dark, graphic, and violent stories that perpetuate the market today. The style you see on the cover is what you get.
Much recommended along with the New X-Men series. I recommend you read this before starting that series. A word of caution, that series does become one of the darker violent comics when it hits issues in the 20s. Thankfully, the artwork quality remains the same.

Book Description
In a career spanning more than 50 years, Harlan Ellison has written or edited 75 books, more than 1700 stories, essays, articles and newspaper columns, two dozen teleplays, and a dozen movies.
Now, for the first time anywhere, Troublemakers presents a collection of Ellison's classic stories -- chosen by the author -- that will introduce new readers to a writer described by the New York Times as having "the spellbinding quality of a great nonstop talker, with a cultural warehouse for a mind."
Customer Reviews:
Love the Essays!.......2007-07-27
Yes, this is a collection of Ellison's stories that have been published many times over. However, the short essays that precede each story are worth the price alone, in my opinion (My personal favorite is the "Soldier" preamble, and I feel this story is very relevant to what's going on today).
I admit a certain prejudice to Harlan Ellison's work: My mother introduced me to his books early on, and at difficult times in my life it was good to hear another articulate the anger I felt. Got me through many a sleepless night! Plus, in one of his stories there is a character that has our family name (not a common one). So...Take my review with a grain of (rock)salt if you will, but read at least one of his stories if you haven't already.
I would say that this book is a good intro to Harlan Ellison's work.
A feast of Ellison!.......2004-11-02
Having spent the last 30 years voraciously comsuming everything Harlan has written I believe I am well qualified to review this lastest book. My only complaint with the book is that Harlan left out so many great stories that I would have included. However including so many other stories would have made this collection extremely unwieldy to say the least. Suffice it to say that every story is a gem and I hope that this volume becomes a starting point for many new fans of Ellison's remarkable fiction.
I also wish to inform you that contray to another review Gene Roddenberry did not re-write Ellison's Star Trek script, he had others do the vandalism for him. Let it also be noted that Harlan's original script (not the broadcast episode itself) for that same Star Trek episode won the writer's Guild of America award for "Best Episodic Drama" in 1968.
Everyone is entitled to their informed opinion.
The Very Best of Harlan..........2004-07-04
Troublemakers is the best introduction to the stories of Harlan Ellison in print. Out of the roughly 2,000 stories he has written, some of his greatest are here, including Soldier, Jeffty is Five, and "Repent, Harlequin!" Said the Ticktockman. Each story comes with a little preface by the author, wherein he loosely ties them all together with the theme of "troublemaking." (In actuality, this is a "greatest hits" collection.) However, this by no means contains ALL of his greatest hits. For instance, The Whimper of Whipped Dogs is absent, as is Demon with a Glass Hand. For something along those lines you'd need to purchase The Essential Ellison - and only Harlan could get away with calling a book the size of the Norton Anthology "essential." However, to begin a study of his work, this is the place to start.
The thrill is gone........2004-02-04
Several years ago, Harlan Ellison was vital, Harlan Ellison was angry, Harlan Ellison was a force of chaos that upset the applecart any chance he got. Time hasn't been kind either to him or to the stories collected herein. He's become the unapologetic, misanthropic crank who stands in the middle of the square railing at all the fools around him and ultimately is tiresome to read or listen to. If you're in your late teens or early twenties, this and his other collections will shake you up...but probably only for one read-through. Harlan, get a life. Given an extra star for nostalgia's sake.
A Very Angry Man Makes Trouble.......2002-08-20
I find it somewhat difficult to sum up an entire book of short stories in a single review. Many of the stories in TROUBLEMAKERS are magical, thought-provoking and wonderful. But on the other hand, others in the collection simply bored me, and left me impatient for the next story to begin. The book as a whole I found to be mostly hit and miss, with some real standouts that do manage to make the collection a welcome one.
Like a belligerent Rod Serling with a chip on his shoulder, Harlan Ellison angrily provides an introduction to each of his stories (sometimes being more entertaining in his factual summary than in the work of fiction itself) and describes some of the themes that he was attempting to inject into the particular story. The overall hook of this collection is, as you may have guessed from the title, troublemakers and the, er, trouble that they make. Included are stories ranging from 1956 up through the year of publication (2001), many of which are products of their era, yet still manage to have a timeless feel to them. For example, the utterly sixties "'Repent, Harlequin!' Said The Ticktockman" is dripping with the feeling and sensibilities of that decade, but can be read today in the 21st century without losing any of its original passion. The stories here make a good suite of tales, though you'll have to squint your eyes a bit to squeeze some of them under the troublemaking heading.
As I mentioned, some of the stories here are absolutely amazing. When Ellison's talents are clicking he can create stories that boggle the imagination and rank up with the best of Ray Bradbury, another master of the fantastical short story. Yet there are several selections here that I found to be a bit dreary and inconsequential. I wondered briefly if I had missed something, but after skimming what I had just read I came to the conclusion that I had, indeed, "got" the story, I just hadn't cared for it. The worst of this collection tend to be uninteresting and contain foreseeable conclusions, sharply clashing with the imaginative heights of the best. It's a pity that the collection is a bit haphazard because the really good stories definitely make this collection worth a purchase.
This was the first collection of Ellison's short stories that I've read and I certainly plan on reading more in the future. Although I didn't care for several of the stories in this particular anthology, I recognized a quality that I liked. TROUBLEMAKERS features stories that can be raw in places, have a sense of faint futility and aren't assured of a happy ending. Many of them were genuinely unpredictable (and by unpredictable, I mean that I honestly didn't see the ending coming rather than guessing it but assuming that the author wouldn't go there) and occasionally unsettling. The best stories in TROUBLEMAKERS did what any good anthology should do -- make me want to read more by this author.

How the Particular Can Have Relevance for Everyone.......2004-01-07
David Tracy is one of the most brilliant Christian theologians of this generation. He is also one of the most generous. Even as a young man, his range was breath-taking. His endnotes take his readers on guided tours of the best recent scholarship in a dozen fields, including philosophy, history, psychology, sociology, literary criticism, Biblical studies, comparative religious studies, hermeneutics, and critical theory. No serious work on the topic he has chosen is ignored. Each is cited for its strengths; none are trivialized or merely dismissed. Over the years, his range has remained remarkable, while his theology has become richer, subtler, more sensitive to human cruelty and human suffering, to conflicts, interruptions, displacements, blind alleys, and states of extreme tension and danger. He has been one of the great teachers of theology in this generation, a mentor to dozens of important younger scholars in a variety of church traditions. This book marked a kind of mid-point in his career. In it he grapples with the difficult question of how a particular event, a particular person, a particular tradition or a particular expression of passion, discipline and insight can become of general and even universal relevance and fundamental importance. Key to his treatment of these issues was his appropriation of the category of "the classic." Since his own tradition and faith community is Roman Catholic, this book becomes a deeply thoughtful and well focused exposition of the philosophical commitments and methodological principles that could make possible an adequate contemporary theological account of what it means to be "Catholic." This book, on the grounds and method of a Catholic systematic theology, was supposed to be followed by a major work on praxis and the needed framework for a "practical theology." But the path of his thinking took a different turn. For over a decade--or a decade and a half--he has instead been working on a major treatment of the Christian understanding of "God." Along the way, his Gifford Lectures, never published, gave some indication at least of the direction his thought on this subject has taken. All of us who feel indebted to him await the publication of this work with an expectation of a great banquet. Along with figures like Joseph Komonchak, Francis Schussler Fiorenza, Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, John D. Caputo, and Bernard McGinn, Tracy has brought American Catholic thought onto a world stage. For anyone struggling with the implications of Christian faith in the postmodern situation of American culture Tracy's work can be a source of illumination, wisdom, and solace.
confronting the problem of alternate truth claims.......2003-01-28
Tracy attempts to reach a methodological framework from which to account for the vast differences in theological doctrines--that is, plurality. His scholarship is erudite and felicitously written. He draws on all the big names in philosophy and theology, but his system remains lacking because of its reliance upon a Kantian view of knowledge and in the end there is little room for actual truth. Rather, truth is more practical in providing existential answers to various situations. Tracy's spirit in writing is good. Christians should work to keep theology vital and public. Utlimately though, Tracy's book is a deft move to declare relativism the norm of praxis.

Book Description
This is rare look into the traditional ways of creating the beautiful masks that have brought such admiration to the native American carvers of the Pacific Northwest. The masks of the Kwakiutl people of the Pacific Northwest are noted around the world for their bold colorful designs. Used for dramatic recreations of the ancestors' adventures, they carry a depth of social, historical, and religious meaning. Lelooska has spent a lifetime creating these masks, a privilege bestowed upon him by the Kwakiutl. He has recreated many of the ceremonial masks which were lost or destroyed when the potlach was, for a time, outlawed. His masks are used in the traditional dances both at the revived gatherings and at recreations of the dances presented by the Lelooska Foundation in Ariel, Washington. Now he shares the traditional carving techniques with carvers everywhere. The Kwakiutl carvers are known particular for their transformation or opening masks, which change or open to reveal a second, inner mask. The mask carved in this new book is just such a mask, beautiful in its design and its complexity. Each step is illustrated and described to help the carver recreate the mask on his or her own. This is a unique and much awaited book by one of America's foremost artists., 360 color photos, 8 1/2" x 11"

Book Description
This clear and comprehensive study is the first book-length analysis of Claude Chabrol to be published in English since 1970. It brings back into focus a giant of French cinema, a man recently described by the French film press as "possibly the greatest living French film-maker." Claude Chabrol has made more than fifty films in a career spanning forty years. This illuminating account traces the development of his film style. It contains detailed analyses of the major films, an exploration of Chabrol's concern with genre, and an awareness of his work's theoretical and political resonance.
