Book Description

Bruno Dante -- aspiring playwright, part-time depressive, and full-time drunk -- has hitchhiked cross-country, escaping the sunshine, have-a-nice-day culture of L.A. for the more cynical climate of New York. It seems to be his kind of town. But he's Bruno Dante, and things are always bound to go wrong. He finds himself in the rut of deadbeat temping jobs, but they don't last. Dante won't play office politics or kiss ass. Longer stints as the night manager of a run-down hotel, a window cleaner, and, finally, a cabbie are punctuated by a number of meaningless affairs, drinking binges, and the customary bouts of depression. Beautiful and brutal in equal measures, Fante's insights are once again fiercely compelling, desperately compassionate, and obscenely funny. Unmissable. "As we trawl with him through deadbeat and dead-end jobs, this unsettling novel is haunted by the spectre of Charles Bukowski." -The Times (London) "Fante is a brilliantly economical stylist ... sad, bitter, yet somehow infused with hope." -- The Face

1 out of 5 stars One of the Worst Books I Own.......2004-10-09

Please don't waste your money on this book. It's terrible. I wish someone would have told me that before I wasted my money on this crap. If you're interested in dirtbags, at least read something good like Fante's father, or Bukowski, or Algren, or Selby, or better yet, buy a Velvet Underground or Stooges album. Or, hell, put a down payment on a bag of herion or head down to Sunset and sodomize a prostitute (male or female). I guarantee you it'll be more entertaining, even for $13. You can even shout, "I am officially a total scumbag!" Which is basically what Fante does on every page of this completely generic novel.

5 out of 5 stars Down on Luck!.......2003-06-30

Yes, this is the one i really enjoyed. It felt like reading the work of the writer who didn't sweath while writting it (unlike Mooch). And that relaxed manner, communicates to the reader, as well. He did it in style, the way his father did, made ordinary events, into extraordinary. And that is something called ART?

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL!.......2002-12-29

Read it months ago and still can't get it out of my mind. This guy is better than Bukowski. If you don't believe me give it a shot.
What's it about? Trying to stay off booze and whatnot long enough to create on the typer--while desperately needing to hold on to some dead-end job in order to keep a bit of food in the belly and a roof overhead. This is life, the way it is for most people in this great nation of ours. Not everyone out there is wealthy like Bill Gates and has it made. Most people in this country are struggling and merely trying to make ends meet.

Bruno Dante is one of us, one of many. He feels he has the ability and the talent to creat something he can be proud of as a writer...if he can keep the demons at bay long enough...
You don't have to be a writer to be able to relate.
A Great American Novel? That's exactly what I said.

5 out of 5 stars How Does This Guy Do It?.......2002-09-28

The title of this review pertains to Dan Fante the novelist, and to "Bruno Dante", Fante's protagonist in this third installment about an alcololic on a downward spiral. Dan Fante is a brilliant writer who takes the reader into the bowels of hell and back. How does he do it? "Bruno Dante" is a man on a road to nowhere and, like all alcoholics, refuses to admit it but somehow keeps on going. How does he do it?

"Bruno" started out as a chump (CHUMP CHANGE), then became a MOOCH and now he tries a geographical cure for his misery by moving to New York. In his first interview with a temp agency he lies about his last employer, telling the interviewer the company has relocated. "I've relocated, too" is his explanation for being in New York. Alcoholics are always trying to "relocate". Dead end job after dead end job follows until he finds himself hanging onto the side of a building, fourteen stories up, washing windows. The one satisfying moment of his day comes when he spits off a tall building knowing someone down below is lower than he. At least for that second.

Once again Fante explains the illness of addiction in a way everyone can understand. The booze and the drugs are only simptoms. It's the mind that's messed up. Yet "Bruno" will continue to seek happiness in a place where happiness never has been and never will be found: in that messed up mind of his.

You'll find yourself pulling for "Bruno" to find that happiness because, even though he's a full blown alcoholic, Fante has made him a very funny and likeable guy. Will he find that happiness we all seek? Read the book to find out.

5 out of 5 stars Bruno Dante's Way!.......2002-09-22

The masterful Dan Fante, author of Spitting Off Tall Buildings, does it again. Easy to read, easy to relate. His protagonist Bruno Dante is a regular guy/struggling writer going from [bad] job to [bad] job in New York while at the same time hoping to create something worthwhile on the typewriter, etc., something he can be proud of... I like Fante as a human being, I like his "voice," and so will you. Unlike so many writers out there, he manages to stay clear of B.S. Life isn't easy for a lot of people; that's just the way things are and he lays it out. The style is pure, raw, from the heart and gut. The way it ought to be.

Book Description

Introducing a new exciting fantasy artist with a conceptual art book - a collection of images that fit together in a morbid jigsaw puzzle of wires, women and man-beasts to form a symbolic cyberotic tale of love, redemption and death. Tim Bradstreet calls it Òthe sum of gothic eroticism.Ó Will appeal strongly to fans of Ashley Wood and Brom.

5 out of 5 stars What a Little Photoshop Can Do.......2007-02-05

This writer used to wonder where some of the best album art she's ever seen came from.

And then she clicked on a link on the official Colide page to Chad's page, and she found out.

The whole them of the artwork of Black Rust is of a world where nothing, and this writer means nothing, is impossible: cybernetic arms, out-there piercings, tattoos, and so on. In fact, according to the artist in the forward, the title of the book comes from a Japanese word reffering to the future.

One warning: this is not for those who are embarassed by the sight of bare breasts, for many of the female models are nude or half-nude

5 out of 5 stars Wow........2005-02-08

This book is totally awesome. Don't judge this one by the work on the cover. Inside it's much darker, more violent, and erotic. Many artists share a similar vision but few can back it with the techniqe and skill of Chad Michael Ward. This book is definitly the best of it's kind.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, highly entertaining book.......1999-03-20

        I thouroughly enjoyed this book.

It wasn't just science fiction, it discussed some pressing moral issues such as euthanasia and the right to die with dignity.

It discusses the social implications of immortality and the associated hoarding of wealth (which applies today to inheritance).

It had a very positive outlook on life...my favourite quote in the whole book after a crippled woman is asked why she chooses to go on was "because it feels good to be alive" and that about sums it up for me.

Kishido: The Way of the Western Warrior
I've been studying martial arts for over 35 years (karate, aikido, iaido, and tai chi), and I'm also an amateur historian. Along the Way I've read a good deal (in translation largely) about budo and the historical contexts in which it evolved.

Recently I went in search of books to give as gifts to some of my students, and largely based on reviews at Amazon I picked 'Kishido'. However, to assure that it was 'worthy' for my purposes, I read it before presenting it. I could barely put this book down until I finished it. I've found little else that I've read that has touched me so profoundly and captured the essence of the martial arts, including autobiographies of the masters of the past century.

Not only did I present this to my students, I've now shared it with my peers and teachers, as well as added it to my library. This is one book I'll read more than once, and I highly recommend it to anyone who shares my love of budo.

                    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2006-08-10

A very readable series of essays on the philosophy behind the martial way. I'm reading it again as a guide for teaching design in an art school.

                    5 out of 5 stars perhaps biased.......2004-08-21

My review may not be entirely objective; I have known the author for some years and have been fortunate to have him as a friend, a teacher, and a training partner. His book is reflection of his personality, and of his experience in the martial arts. If you are a thoughtful pratitioner you will find this book well worthwhile. If you enjoy works such as Lowry's "Autumn Lightning" you will find this a most enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a book about the martial arts.......2004-01-01

This book is of great interest and value to any person seeking to live a life more fully actualized. While frequent reference is made to the author's martial training, and there is a touch of history, this is not a book about the martial arts. No "moves", holds, or techniques are described; rather, it is primarily a work of 'practical' philosophy. The reader is rewarded with a cohesive overview of the author's insights, organized in a way that makes the reasons for the lessons more apparant, thus enabling the reader to better appreciate and retain the lessons. I recommend this book with great enthusiasm to all thoughtful people!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas Gift.......2003-10-29

Kishido is a fabulous book that is suitable for everyone, especially for the martial artist whether it be a student or an instructor. This book is filled with wonderful wisdom that can be applied to the reader in any way they desire. It is truly the beginning of a journey for the reader, providing a road for self discovery. I personally have benefitted from reading Kishido, I became a better person and I am much more aware of the way that I have an impact on others in my life. Kishido, The Way of the Western Warrior is a must read and it would be an excellent christmas gift for anyone. It will touch your heart and mind in a very unique way.

A good breakfast means different things in different countries: miso soup and rice in Japan; cooked beans in Egypt; bacon and eggs in the U.S.--or cold cereal with skim milk. Nikki and David Goldbeck explain why breakfast is truly important, then offer 135 ways, with emphasis on whole and minimally processed natural foods, to help you and your family enjoy a nutritionally solid morning meal. Some recipes may have limited appeal, such as pancakes made with whole wheat flour, honey, and cottage cheese, and whole wheat Danish pastry made with oil rather than butter. Most dishes, though, are creative and appealing: try the Toasted Quick Raisin-Cheese Calzone, Baked Eggs with Cheese, and Chocolate Pudding Cereal. The Good Breakfast Book is particularly helpful if you have to get school-aged children to eat in the morning, and portable choices that can be eaten on the run, such as Puffed Cereal Squares, Fig Miltons, and Peanut Butter Shortbread, will fit into anyone's schedule.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2000-04-26

. Despite the title, this great new vegetarian cookbook by Nikki and David Goldbeck, co-authors of American Wholefoods Cuisine, is chock full of recipes for every meal of the day-especially if your toddler, who like me couldn't care less what's "appropriate" to eat at certain times. In addition to brunch and breakfast sections, there are chapters on juicing, lunchbox favorites, baked goods, and wheat, dairy and egg-free recipes and just plain fun food. There are plenty of vegan recipes, too. One addition that new vegetarian parents will find helpful is the Table of Milk Values comparing everything from almond and soy to cow's and goat's milk. Always wondered in today's day and age of ever-available produce exactly when strawberries or grapes are actually in season? They tell you. Does adding coconut to your granola actually increase the protein value-you bet! I hope you love this book as much as I do. If you get it, you must try the Chunky Apple Oatmeal Pancakes

4 out of 5 stars Best whole wheat pancakes and more!.......1999-11-08

My husband has never liked anything but white flour pancakes until I made the Basic Whole Wheat Pancakes. They are amazingly light even though they have wheat germ and no white flour at all--it was a very happy surprise. There's also a great table listing everything about all the different milks, nut milks, and the like to help you choose. I will be using this book a lot since I really want to learn to eat well in the mornings.

I bought a stack of casual feng shui books and I used them for guiding furniture placement so really, for me, it was more design than superstition that this philosophy is useful. This is by far the most readable and most engaging. I'm not crazy about the cover photo but the interior uses pastel water color illustrations to describe furniture placement and energy lines. It was a fun experience and I don't regret the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The only Feng Shui book that speaks to me.......2005-10-09

I've browsed or read many different books on Feng Shui, but none of them speaks to me the way this one does. I'll admit I'm quite partial to Lam Kam Chuen, whose book on Qigong, (The Way of Energy) changed my life, and continues to impress me as the "must-have" book on qigong.

In the Feng Shui Handbook, Lam uses an authentic Chinese Feng Shui paradigm (the five animals map) which is much simple, practical, and makes intuitive sense, as opposed to the mind-bending intricacies of other schools such as lo-shan, bagua, magic squares, Chinese astrology, compass directions, red strings and octogonal mirrors, which seem to me based more in superstition than practical effect.

Lam's Feng Shui Handbook is the only feng shui handbook I've ever needed!

First book on Feng Shui I ever bought, must have been some 6 years ago, and it is good that it so happened, cause this boko lays down the fundamentals (5 energies, 4 animals, energy flow, cycles of change, numbers and triagrams) and then gives practical examples and modes of employing your newly acquired knowledge. After almost a dozen feng shui books bought and read, this one is still fresh and equally as good as the first time I read it.

5 out of 5 stars A practical intro to a wisdom that works!.......2003-10-15

One can find many misleading Feng Shui books today, claiming ancient wisdom while in reality written by modern charlatans wishing to make a buck. Not this book! "The Feng Shui Handbook" is one of the best books I have found on the subject, and it seems to be accurate and trustworthy, in addition to containing many beautiful and useful color photos and illustrations, making it a very interesting read. It is written by an authoritative master of this Chinese art which, even now, is taught in architecture universities throughout China.

I was reading this book prior to moving into my present residence a few years ago. The book gave me practical knowledge and advice on choosing which apartment to rent, how to arrange my furniture, and how to decorate the place. The advice given is practical and makes sense. For example it points out that having a wall behind one's seat feels much more comfortable than having empty space (try it!). Another recommendation I gleaned from the book is buying a screen to partially block the front door, an experiment that made my living room much more comfortable and cozy. The end result of using this book's advice is years of enjoyment in my residence, and an endless stream of compliments by everyone who visits me about how comfortable and cozy my living space is. This in turn has contributed much to my satisfaction with life and well-being over the past few years.

I have since used this book to rearrange my office space at work, and again the result is much more comfort and better productivity than my previous arrangement. The book gives you advice not only about positioning things, but choosing the appropriate colors and material for furniture and surroundings. I definitely will refer to this book soon when I go looking for my first house. It is the next best thing to hiring a real Feng Shui expert from China, and it works!

5 out of 5 stars trying to grasp the concept of energy fields.......2002-06-19

This is just a wonderful intro to Chinese science and philosophy. You see the glory of the Northern Lights or watch a passing thunderstorm and intuitively understand the give-and-take of energy.

Lam Kam Chuen really strives to place Chinese science in the mainstream of Western Einsteinian physics. He isn't concerned with adjusting your dresser to cure corns. He may have an opinion on that, as might Einstein, but if that is what you're seeking, you should read Dr. Scholl's.

This book is effective because of the brushed demonstrations of energy flows in the latter half of the book. You are free to accept or reject this approach, but I believe it is an effective approach to this cross-cultural experience.

                          Book Description

Arthur Osborne has packed into this small volume all of the essential information relating to the life and teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879-1950). The extraordinary teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi continue to bless the lives of countless seeking souls, and his life fills us with wonder. As a teenager-hardly seventeen-he realized the Self through a spontaneous act of Self-enquiry without conscious effort or special training imparted by a teacher. He left his home (at Madurai) in 1896 and came to Arunachala (Tiruvannamalai), where he lived as an all-renouncing sage in a state of continuous Self-realization for fifty-four years-until his mahanirvana in 1950. The author includes in this volume instructions given by Sri Ramana to early devotees, such as Sivaprakasam Pillai, Frank Humphreys, Kavyakanta, Natesa Mudaliar, and others, as well as the experiences of Paul Brunton and other later devotees. Sri Maharshi's central message is that Self-knowledge is not something to be acquired afresh. It is only becoming aware of one's own natural state of Pure Being, through Self-enquiry. Arthur Osborne (1906-1970) was an ardent devotee of Sri Ramana Maharshi and particularly well known as founder-editor of The Mountain Path, the spiritual journal of Sri Ramanasramam. After completing his studies at Oxford, he moved first to Poland, then to Bangkok, where he lectured at Chulalonghorn University and through a friend learnt about French metaphysician René Guénon, whose works dealt comprehensively with Hindu metaphysics, eventually translating into English his Crisis of the Modern World. He later spent four years as a prisoner of war of the Japanese before being united with his family, who were waiting at Sri Ramanasramam, Tiruvannamalai. He spent the remainder of his life there, writing about Sri Ramana and related subjects. He died in 1970, his body much weakened by the effect of his years in the concentration camp.

4 out of 5 stars Will the Truth elude you?.......2003-05-22

By the relentless pursuit of this question, "Who Am I?" Maharshi believes the ego can break through to the Self. And if anyone should know it is he.

Ramana Maharshi is one of the great Hindu saints and certainly the most authentic of the last century. Many gurus have come and gone with mixed messages, one of them being that a guru should live lavishly (cf. the experience of the Beatles). Maharshi served no one, not even himself. He was as truly detached as it seems a human being can get. In contrast to so many teachers, he didn't even prattle on about the universe, the soul, and Brahman. If he did speak to issues it was usually in pithy responses to well-formed questions. And, almost always, he ended by encouraging the seeker to follow the question above. In short, his message was simple.

So why did he get it and we don't? Maharshi taught the quintessence of Vedanta. Like a powerful acid he burned down to the bedrock of Hindu thought-the teaching of nonduality. For Maharshi, as for the Hindu sages throughout time, all was Maya-illusion-including the self itself. The core mythology is this: Brahman-the All-plays a game, the Cosmic hide-and-seek. By forgetting itself, Brahman can come to rediscovery and delight, just like a child at play. One of the many obfuscations in this game is the ego. Question it, ask oneself again and again, "Who Am I," and the ego will, like a cornered child in the game of tag, eventually relent. Underneath all the vestiges of ego, as one undresses it with the question, lies Brahman smiling.

The philosophy is lucid, elegant, and incredibly simple-typical characteristics of the Truth-but I find it elusive still. So must most seekers because though they ask the question, they do not end up like the Bhagavan, Maharshi.
Maharshi, after his realization at the age of 16, made his way to the sacred mountain of Arunachala and never left its shadow. His life was simple and devoid of any attention-seeking behaviors, though a great flock settled around him. He participated in the daily round of food preparation, sweeping, etc. and lived an austere life. Eventually, as his reputation spread, people came to visit from all parts, first Indians and then cosmopolitans. Among others, W. Somerset Maugham visited. He was not quite so struck as others by the Bhagavan's presence but still retained him as the prototype for the guru in The Razor's Edge.

Though he avoided speaking much, the many who visited professed a very powerful influence by witnessing the man's gentle radiance. With a look into Maharshi's eyes, most peoples' questions would resolve themselves. He eventually died from a cancer and yet his reputation remains.

Such a being kindles mystery but is not a great teacher unless one, presumably, is a great student.

This book is a bio of a being who never claimed to be the body. It is written for beings who still think they are their bodies. The majority of the book is about Ramana and his life around the ashram with devotees and interactions with visitors and even the local wildlife. Most books about Ramana are question and answer format so this one shows how an enlightened being interacts with life and people in everyday situations.
One of the most amazing parts was when Ramana was dying. The doctors knew he would die before the day was done and so did all the devotees. They sang songs outside his room. Even though he said he was not the body but the SELF, the ONE SELF in all of us, the drama was being played out on the physical plane. As the devotees sang, Ramana had tears in his eyes and then he just stopped breathing. I had tears in my eyes too, just reading about those last moments.

when it comes to indian holy men , its often hard to separate the dross from the sublime . books on indian mystics abound , most just end up stretching credulity . its not uncommon to come across a book which portrays some indian "saint" that leaves me shaking my head in an almost visceral disgust .

it therefore comes as a relief ( especially to my viscera ) when you read a neatly written book about an indian saint . i'm sure its next to impossible to please everyone when it comes to writing about someone no less a phenomena than ramana maharishi , but messrs osborne seems to have done a commendable job of it . i know he's done just such a commendable job of it because the book left me wanting to know more about the maharishi . not many books do that .

i can therefore , unreservedly , recommend this book .

This is a most welcome reissue of a hard to find and out of print 1954 biography of Ramana Maharshi, one of the great spiritual figures of the last century, whose life, dialogues and silent teaching have been of enormous value and good example to people of all faiths. It has been written for the general reader and is quite accessible and intelligible even while presenting the basic teachings of Ramana. A helpful glossary clarifies the meaning of technical terms. It is written, however, in the hagiographical style common in many religious traditions from ancient times to the last century, so the modern sophisticated reader might well read some of the more usual stories about the Maharshi with a bit incredulity. Nevertheless, it is an excellent introduction to the man and his teaching, a help in the spiritual life whatever your faith, and a classic work.

A spiritual classic of modern times, this authoritative work on the life and teachings of Ramana Maharshi dispels the popular notion that books of this kind are meant only for the philosophically inclined'. Though a serious work, it makes for absorbing reading.

The Maharshi's habitual silence that communicated more than speech, his intuitive grasp of a questioner's mind, his simple answers to the most complex philosophical and religious problems, his sense of kinship with the animals and birds who sought his company, his compassion and humour, and above all the power and radiance of his mere presence -- all these are captured by Osborne in page after page.

Some of the best commentaries on the Sage of Arunachala have come from his western disciples, like Paul Brunton and S.S.Cohen; and Osborne is foremost among them. With ease and precision, Osborne evokes the spirit of the south Indian religious and social customs of the early part of this century, especially of the life in the Ashram at the foothills of Arunachala.

Ramana Maharshi insisted that the only way to freedom is through the enquiry `Who am I?'. It is a quest that reveals that what we call the mind is an illusion, and thus liberates us from our accumulated tendencies (`vasanas'). It can be undertaken by anybody at any time and requires neither scholarship nor austerities. The timelessness of such an ancient teaching adapted by the Maharshi to suit the modern times comes through lucidly in the author's presentation.

In `discovering' this book, one sets out on a journey of self-discovery.
