I was truly engaged reading about Richard and Nina. I felt so bad for Richard all of the garbage he had to deal with, with his wife's family. Her mother RubyLee was a straight up trip. She took using people to a whole different level. Nina was a really nive kindhearted and caring person whose husband didn't realize what he had until she was gone. I was glad to see Nina working on her relationship with her daughter because it is so true how death could come knocking on your door without you having told the person that you love them or that you are proud of them. This story was well written with a solid ending.

Wonderful read!! I loved it from beginning to end! I could see myself (and my relationship) in this book. Maybe not so much the drama, but attempting to save something that may be already dead and yet, wanting something better out of life and love. Most romance novels are full of just sex -- Taken for Granted gave you just enough. Great job Earl Sewell. Please keep it up!

This book is a must read! The controlling mother-in-law is hilarious and cunning. So cunning and controlling that it cost her everything in the end. This is a book that makes you think and also keep people out of your relationship.

I don't know why it took so long for me to write a review for this book since I read it for the first time about a year ago. It's still fresh in my mind that I had a heart for Richard and his relationship with Nina. It is refreshing to read a "grown-up" novel. Not a novel where the chick (immature & materialistic) is a girlfriend (or if you are Nikki Turner...play wife)of a hustla/drug dealer...(not my reality).Taken for Granted is a wonderful story, filled with twists and turns and characters you are sure to love. My favorite...RubyLee. You gotta read her to understand her. Favorite portion of the story...two words: jet skis!!! Find out yourself what happens!

This book was simply to hard to put down. Taken for Granted-was exceptional from beginning to end. I recommend this book highly. Earl Sewell is a very engaging author and I cannot wait to read his other books.

Rucka knocks it out of the park! .......2007-02-25
First of all, ignore the review below. That guy clearly has issues. I never cared much for Wonder Woman, and was only familiar with the character from the JLA comics and cartoon. I decided to give the book a try when Greg Rucka took over, based on how much I've enjoyed most of the other comics he's written. This trade contains some of his finest issues, including the battle royal against the ancient menace of Medusa! Wonder Woman is clearly in the Superman class as far as raw power goes, and is a match for the Dark Knight himself for sheer willpower, and the refusal to give up for any reason. There are some spectacular moments in this trade, from the perspectives of action and character developmnent. Rucka does a fantastic job of weaving the superhero action around Wonder Woman's mythological roots. It's always interesting, and it never feels forced. There are several different artists here, but all do a good job. The covers by J. G. Jones are probably the high point, from a visual standpoint. There's a nice recap at the beginning of the trade, so you'll have all the information you need to dive right into the story, even if you've never read a Wonder Woman comic before. Sadly, the character has gone in a new, less interesting direction in the past year under a new writer, but these trades are readily available for all to enjoy. Give 'em a shot!

Titan II: Vivaporius ý Great Graphic Novel!.......2003-03-27
"Titan II: Vivaporius" carries on where "Titan - The Graphic Novel" left off: namely with the crew of the mighty Warlord class titan: Imperius Dictatio. Where as "Titan - The Graphic Novel" had a relatively short story that didn't amount to much more than an introduction to Imperius Dictatio and its' crew, "Titan II: Vivaporius" goes much further and introduces an interesting story with a well-developed plot, all within the bounds of graphic novel.
Where "Titan - The Graphic Novel" left us at the end of an Imperial campaign against Ork invaders, "Titan II: Vivaporius" plunges us in the midst of a campaign against the alien Tyranids (after of course, the Orks are routed). Unlike what amounted to a relatively easy fight for the Imperius Dictatio's crew against the Orks, the Tyranids put up a tough fight and many of Imperius Dictatio's brother titans are destroyed. One, in fact, is captured, which leads to some of the graphic novel's more interesting plot directions. The other very interesting plot detail is the entry of the Eldar as an ally force. I very much enjoyed the way that the writers and illustrators of the Eldar portrayed them. They truly seem alien and imposing rather than simply anthropomorphic copies of human beings.
All in all, "Titan II: Vivaporius" was a very enjoyable read and a far superior piece of art and writing than its' predecessor.
I highly recommend "Titan II: Vivaporius."

Three landmark speeches.......2001-09-27
"Three Prophets of Religious Liberalism: Channing -- Emerson -- Parker" is a powerful collection of speeches. The book also contains a substantial introduction by Conrad Wright. The three historic pieces contained in the book are as follows: William Ellery Channing's "Unitarian Christianity" (delivered in 1819), Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Divinity School Address" (1838), and Theodore Parker's "The Transient and Permanent in Christianity" (1841). In his introduction, Wright notes that all three orations caused "widespread controversy." Indeed, all these decades later, I think that these men still have some bold ideas.
These speeches reflect conflicts that are still active in United States Christianity. Channing warns against the practice of selectively reading certain parts of the Judeo-Christian Bible in a literal way. He warns, "The ambitious continue to find doctrines in the Bible, which favor their love of dominion." Emerson looks forward to a new revelation, complementary to the Bible, to emerge in the Western world. Parker warns against turning the Judeo-Christian Bible into a sort of "idol."
These speeches are fascinating to read, and the ideas expressed in them remain relevant. This is an excellent book for those with an interest in U.S. religious history, or for those who want to hear voices that express an alternative to the soul-killing doctrines of the "religious right."

This is one of the best books I've found on Oriental Rugs. The text is very well written and specific to each type of rug shown, and the photography is excellent. Photographs are of representative rugs for each type ("tribe"), and the rugs shown are very colorful with intricate patterns that are sure to stir the heart of every lover of orientals.
An informative and engaging introduction to modern rugs.......2005-02-14
Unlike the gentleman below, I had little knowledge of oriental rugs prior to reading this book. I found it to be a perfect place to start my education. The text was informative, particularly in regards to the "renaissance" in traditional rugmaking techniques over the past 20 years. He does a wonderful job of covering the pros and cons of natural vs. chrome dyes, and handspun vs. millspun wool - again without being overly opinionated or judgmental despite his personal leanings.
The writing was engaging, fair, and accompanied by high-quality photographs (n.b. the photos on his website are the highest resolution I've seen anywhere). He gives equal weight to each country's production. Helpful information is also provided regarding approximate prices per sq. ft.
In fact, I liked his book so much that I just purchased two rugs from him - two years after reading the book, and after looking at dozens of sites on the web and a handful of shops in person.
Only book of its kind.......2004-03-30
I've read both editions of this book and, yes, the first edition only had a few words on Iran but, as the author explained, there was an embargo at the time. The new edition has an entire chapter on new rugs from Iran, with photos of some really gorgeous rugs.
Most of my personal knowledge about rugs was that rugs made today are lifeless, uninteresting pieces cranked out from rug factories in places like India and China, or poorly made, touristy pieces from places like Turkey. Boy was I wrong. It's good to know there are finally interesting, attractive, reasonably-priced, handmade carpets available again.
The possibility that some carpet made in Iran in the last year or so may rival the beauty of my 19th-Century Persian Bidjar is stunning.
Very Basic.......2001-05-02
As someone who already has an intermediate knowledge of oriental carpets, I was disappointed by this book. It is extremely basic - something akin to a Dick and Jane primer. It provides only a few pages of information on carpets from each region (if you can believe it, Iran [Persia] was lumped together with two other countries, and all three countries were covered by approximately only five pages, including illustrations. It does not provide any information on specific carpets (i.e. Nain, Bokhara, Yahyali, etc.), but did explain the general difference between wool types, dyes, etc. Also, while it did have several photos of carpets, many of them seemed to be photos of novelty carpets, and not of traditional designs. Overall, I believe that this would be good for someone who knows absolutely nothing about oriental carpets and is only looking for general information. In my opinion, there are much better books on the subject for both beginners and experts alike, such as Oriental Rugs, A Buyer's Guide, by Lee Allane.
the best guide i've run across.......2000-06-12
I saw a review of this book in HALI magazine, and have found it clarifies a lot of things that I found confusing and intimidating about buying an Oriental rug. It explains exactly where the rugs in today's rug stores come from, and how much you should expect to pay for them. It's well written and very much on the level-you don't get the impression the author is pushing you to go out and buy something. There's a lot of mystification in the Oriental rug business, and although the book is not an expose in any sense, I felt better equipped to buy a rug and get a good value than I did after reading other books on the subject, most of which seemed out of date. Lots of color plates too.

good range of patterns.......2007-01-05
even though I am an experienced knitter I wanted this books as it has a good variety of basic patterns including a poncho, sleeveless tops, short sleeve top, skirts, sweaters, jacket, tie front top etc. The best thing is that the size range is very large up to finished size 54 inches for some items, and most up to finished size 46 inches. The yarns are mostly worsted weight. The styles are very fashionable and you could easily substitute yarns.

Great Book!.......2007-07-29
No, it's not about how to knit. The title perhaps confused readers if they were expecting another how-to book. Instead, this book is about people who knit, why they knit and what their knitters' journeys are like. I found it a delightful read and I really treasure it. I found it at a close-out store for a few dollars each copy. I have donated a few copies to my knitting club for fundraisers. I would not hesitate to pass it along to other devoted knitters.

I found this in the 'sale' aisle of my yarn store and I haven't put it down. It has great reference material i.e. Knitters Review, which is free and I signed on to get via email. I also loved the fact that it was down-to-earth. This is not a how-to book. It's a compilation of many people from many walks of life just talking about their love of knitting and how they got to that point. I even liked that the author was very 'new' to this experience as I am. My take-away is that I will make more swatches (which I tend to hate doing) so I can put them together for a fabulous reminder of what I have learned. And look up the many references that were given.

If you want to know why a cross section of people in the US knit, this is somewhat interesting. There are no illustrations, just a few line drawings that do nothing to add to the book.

I just started knitting recently and I am already addicted.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked reading all of the stories about how each person started knitting and how much they love it.
I loved this book. I disagree with the other reviewers that did not enjoy it; however, since I am a new knitter I could not see what they saw in the book. Maybe this book is more for new knitters to appreciate--since experienced knitters are set in their ways and will see all the flaws (which I did not see any).

I really like this book as a glimpse into why some people started knitting. It's interesting to see what different catalyst triggered the "want" to learn. Now, this is not a How-to by any means. It's just a glimpse into different communities of knitters and if you take it as such, I think you'll enjoy it!

Very pretty color glossy pictures, and it did include sketches of the floor plans of the featured homes. But I found the homes featured to be very much "one of a kind" applications. I really didn't see how any of the ideas for these homes could be duplicated elsewhere, which is what I was looking for - at least a little inspiration. I much prefer "The New Cottage Home".

I bought and read this when it came out in 1998. I still refer to it and enjoy it as much. I do hope the publishers are planning to do a follow-up book.

A nice introduction to publications design, but..........2005-12-27
I am a beginnner in the realm of publications design and I was looking for a good introduction to the field. This book offers just that. It serves as a great guide for things that you will need to study in more depth if you want to function in this realm of design. The writing is very reader-friendly. It is not too wordy or "text bookish". Here is a break down of the chapters you will find in this book:
1.) Publication Desing Within an Historical Context - Exactly what it says: The history and development of graphic design as a discipline.
2.) The Principles and Elements of Publication Design - Basic design principles as applied specifically to publications.
3.) Using Color Effectively - Color is a lot more complex than one might think, and managing its use is an important part of visual communication.
4.) Understanding Type - Typography (big shocker).
5.) Page Layout - One of the most valuable chapter (IMO). Discusses grid systems and properly organizing pages.
6.) Imagery - Different types of imagery, possibly sources, using it effectively etc.
7.) Publication in the Third Dimension - Another of my favorite chapters. Introduces you to printing concerns such as paper weights and binding techniques.
8.) Design Principles at Work - Case studies of specific publication types (magazines, newspapers, newsletters, catalogs etc.).
9.) Professional Opportunities in Pubcliations Design - Awesome chapter detailing the different areas one can find work in (yes, there are quite a lot).
Overall this is a great introduction. However potential buyers should note this. These subjects definitely require further reading and study, but this book is a great starting point.
My only real complaint with this book is in regards to another book in the Design Exploration series that Poppy Evans co-authored: "Exploring the Elements of Design". This book can be a bit repetitive if you already own EoD. Some chapters may as well have been copy and pasted between the two books. That's how similar they are (ESPECIALLY the imagery chapter). Quite a few of the diagrams are copied directly from "Elements" which did annoy me quite a bit. Despite this, the chapters not appearing in "Elements" make this book more than worth the money as far as I'm concerned.
One other complaint is proof-reading. This book could have used a better dose of it. There are not that many mistakes, and I may just be nitpicking, but there were a few points where I said to myself "How did they not catch that?" For instance, in a diagram discussing gridlines, the caption references the gridlines that are supposed to be "indicated in red". Ok, this is good, except for the fact that the grid lines are actually blue. This is such a small mistake, I know, but I would think that the publishers would be more concerned about spotting inconsistencies like this.
Overall though, this is a great buy. I really enjoyed it. If you are still not sure about the purchase, you can always visit www.delmarlearning.com. I went to the website out of curiosity and discovered that they have a few sample chapters posted online in PDF format for most of their books. A big help!

From logotype to printed pages, you won't find a more readable, on-the-money guide to designing newsletters.

This book is very useful and I use it as a guide when producing newsletters for my campus. The author's tone is a bit high-handed but the information is invaluable. There are examples of styles and set-ups for very fine standard styles. Not anything cutting-edge in it, though. The author is thorough in language useage and styles. Lots of what not to dos in here.
Really old book.......2002-09-04
This is a good book with lots of tried and true design tips, but if you're looking to redesign your newsletter and give it a "current" feel, be forwarned: this book is almost 10 years old, and the sample newsletters they feature show it. I think it's a good book, but given its age it should be cheaper.
Excellent Source for Designing a Polished Newsletter.......1998-08-23
With this book plus "Producing a First-Class Newsletter" By Barbara A. Fanson, I learned everything I needed to know to produce a very polished redesign of the monthly newsletter for my company's customers. Well worth the money.

Ok, I suppose you can indeed learn this little book in 50 minutes. But don't take that estimate on the cover too literally. Instead, devote as much time as you need to understand the book's arguments.
The gist is simply that PowerPoint can be as easy to use as a browser. Compared to other products in the Microsoft Office suite, there really isn't that much in PowerPoint. It's fundamentally a small package to learn. Aided also by the quick feedback between what you write in a PowerPoint document and what you see when you display it. Just like editing HTML and seeing the result in a browser, in fact.
