Arnold Zweig's The Case of Sergeant Grischa is the second novel in his A Trilogy of the Transition series about World War I. The plot, based on a true story, revolves around the hapless Russian soldier, Sergeant Grischa. Grischa is laboring away in a prisoner of war camp, but, anticipating the end of the war, Grischa can't wait to be reunited with his wife and daughter. He escapes and while on the run from the Germans falls in with a motley assortment of other escapees, criminals and deserters. Worried about what will happen to him if he is recaptured and discovered to be an escaped prisoner, Grischa assumes the identity of a dead Russian. Well, it turns out that he is recaptured and the Russian he is masquerading as was a known deserter. The Germans, who are facing their own problems with deserters, have issued a policy to execute any deserter. In this simple case of mistaken identity, Grischa is sentenced to death. While he is able to reestablish his true identity, it is too late, Grischa is caught in the wheels of military justice. A brisk read. The spiritual and moral struggles of the various characters involved in this passion play are what add depth to the story.

Brilliant and Beautiful........2004-05-11

I have been a huge fan of Elfquest ever since I found an earlier hardbound full-color edition sitting on a shelf in my local library at the age of 12. Being a girl who was completely alienated by macho superhero comics, I instantly fell in love with this complex story full of riveting characters, tense action, and steamy sexuality. Both innocent and dark, thrilling and comforting, this story has it all. The artwork is simply gorgeous. While this comic was done years ago in a more traditional format, it converts easily and wonderfully to the manga digest-size due to its early manga influences (in the days when an artist could get ridiculed for liking manga). But while it is definitely influenced by the Japanese style, in never imitates or knocks it off. Instead, artist Wendy Pini stays true to her own unique style, deftly combining beautiful lines with dangerous curves. This is no rip-off, thank god, and no old-fashioned comic, either. It's immortal.

There are many books in this epic series. Start with this one that you are looking at right now, "Elfquest: The Grand Quest". If you like it, you can keep buying the manga editions as they are released, or you can check out the new full-color hardcover edition that has come out, which is absolutely stunning. I believe it's called the "archive edition" or something like that.

Middling Mystery in the Trek Setting.......2005-06-18

I had hopes for The Case of the Colonist's Corpse. The book did inspire me to want to re-watch the episode, Court Martial, two of the characters are based on.

The book follows a classic cozy format -- set up a closed world of a frontier colony, give several characters motive to want to kill the victim, and turn the detective loose to ferrit out their secrets. Unfortunately, the cozy style depends on characterization, and on good interplay between the detective and the suspects. Here, the interplay seems forced and dull. I had hopes of a good Christie-style twist in the unmasking, but was disappointed. The reader may be better served reading some of Gardner's better Perry Mason novels, Christie's better works, or some Rumpole of the Bailey stories.

The authors ostentatiously display their mastery of Trek triva, working in references to dozens of TOS, NextGen, and ST:Enterprise worlds, people, and events. The book itself is sandwiched between Return of the Archons and Trouble with Tribbles in the ToS timeline. The triva references swiftly become grating. And the authors don't wrestle with problems in the canon, like the truth-detector used in some ToS episodes.

The courtroom scenes could have benefited from more consultation with a practicing attorney. Gardner was a lawyer, and knew what corners he was cutting with Perry's courtroom theatrics. Here, the authors don't take liberties with the coutroom aspects, but in a way that doesn't seem credible. Shaw's loss if pre-ordained, but one doesn't get the sense of her preparations, and Cogley having to overcome an experienced opponent.

All in all, an average mystery in an interesting setting. A sequel, perhaps by other authors, could be fascinating.

Fusion genre........2005-03-26

What we have here is a traditional courtroom drama, set in the Star Trek universe. There is only a brief cameo appearance by the crew of the Enterprise; mostly, the book centers around Sam Cogley, the lawyer who defended Captain Kirk in the TV episode "Courtmartial". The book is well-written and interesting, but if you read "Star Trek" books for the characters of the Enterprise crew, this book is not for you. Similarly, if you enjoy courtroom dramas, but don't care for science fiction, this book is probably not for you. If, on the other hand, you enjoy both science fiction AND courtroom drama, this is a definite must-read.

Good but not Captivating.......2004-03-09

Let us start with a few warnings about this review before I delve into the meat of it. First, I do not read many mysteries. I ended up stopping part way through the book to pick up another novel. I was also expecting different use of more familiar characters.

The first 100 pages were used to develop the characters, the setting, and the motives of the multiple suspects. Once I pushed past my personal preconceived ideas of this book, I was able to enjoy the mystery much better. The mystery developed very well and the reveal satisfied me. All the clues were well placed through out the story and easy to bring to conclusion.

The story was good but the writing seemed simple. I think the need to develop the large ensemble of characters forced the writers to use stereotypes for many of players and a few even seem to be over used. The story telling required for this story was excellent and I think that alone allowed me to drive through to the end.

Perry Mason meets Star Trek.......2004-02-09

The Case of the Colonist's Corpse Review

In this Perry Mason meets Star Trek Original Series novel, renowned Federation defense attorney Sam Cogley agrees to defend a Klingon commander who has been charged with the murder of a Federation settlement administrator. The story is set on a barren colony planet settled (under the terms of the Organian treaty) by both the Federation and Klingons. Both races are competing to demonstrate who can best utilize the planet's resources and thus win the planet. Though the competition causes ongoing hostilities, the two respective leaders have worked out a truce creating a on-planet neutral-zone and governing whose law various offenses should be tried under.

Problems arise however when it is discovered that the Klingons are rotating in new colonists secretly to make it look like they are better able to manage their area. Moreover it appears that the Klingons have planted a spy as they seem to know things about the colony before anyone else - including Starfleet. Things come to a boil when the Federation administrator arranges a late-night meeting with his Klingon counter-part and is found dead with the Klingon standing over him.

Sam Cogley (who defended Kirk at his court martial from the TV series) agrees to represent the defendant. He comes to Aneher to solve the case and uncovers a number of things and perhaps even starts the two cultures on their way toward peace.

For Star Trek fans that are mystery lovers this book delivers (it is similar in style to the Perry Mason novels). For those liking the more traditional style of Star Trek book, you may be disappointed. Kirk and crew appear for no more than 10-15 pages; however it has a strong plot and is somewhat unique among Star Trek books which generally follow the ship comes and solves problem on planet mold.

Good Characters but Lacks Drama.......2004-01-30

"The Case of the Colonist's Corpse" by Bob Ingersoll and Tony Isabella is a departure from the usual Star Trek novel in one very obvious way. As the title implies, "The Case of the Colonist's Corpse" is a mystery, a Perry Mason style mystery. The story isn't nearly as dramatic or suspenseful as a genuine Earl Stanley Gardner story but it is still an enjoyable read, carefully plotted with well-drawn characters.

When you begin reading "The Case of the Colonist's Corpse" you already know whom that corpse will be and who will be accused. Following Earl Stanley Gardner's classic template authors Bob Ingersoll and Tony Isabella introduce the main characters and step by step set the stage for the murder. They provide plenty of suspects, carefully establishing who would have cause to want Latham out of the way. Daniel Latham as a character is the perfect victim for evoking in the reader a sense of outrage at his untimely demise. He is a man that is both likable and honorable.

The whole point to this type of mystery is that the reader already knows that the accused is innocent and the fun lies in trying to pick out the subtle clues along the way and guess `who done it' before the denouement of the real culprit at the climax of the story. My main dissatisfaction with "The Case of the Colonist's Corpse" was that that climax came much too swiftly. The courtroom scenes were very short and fast paced.

By wrapping it up so quickly and easily the most interesting character in the story, Sam Cogley, didn't get as much of an opportunity to shine in the courtroom setting as I would have liked. I was looking forward to some theatrics and a bit more drama. That being said Sam Cogley, as a character was still a treat to read. Brilliant, eccentric and devoted to justice Cogley is a 20th century man living in the 23rd century.

Set during the second season of the original series Kirk and crew do make an appearance but their role is limited. "The Case of the Colonist's Corpse" is not a story that requires familiar characters to make it work and that is one of the most refreshing aspects of this novel. You are certainly aware that you are reading a Star Trek novel, but at the same time you don't have to have an intimate familiarity with any of the characters to appreciate the story.

In his letters to early Christian communities, Paul gave much practical advice about organization and orthodoxy. These treated the early Christian communities as something more than a group of people who believed in the same faith: they were people bound together by a common spirit unknown before. The significance of that common spirit occupied the greatest of Christian theologians from Athanasius and Augustine through Luther and Calvin.

In The Mysticism of Paul the Apostle Albert Schweitzer goes against Luther and the Protestant tradition to look at what Paul actually writes in the Epistles to the Romans and Galatians: an emphasis upon the personal experience of the believer with the divine. Paul's mysticism was not like the mysticism elsewhere described as a soul being at one with God. In the mysticism he felt and encouraged, there is no loss of self but an enriching of it; no erasure of time or place but a comprehension of how time and place fit within the eternal. Schweitzer writes that Paul's mysticism is especially profound, liberating, and precise. Typical of Schweitzer, he introduces readers to his point of view at once, then describes in detail how he came to it, its scholarly antecedents, what its implications are, what objections have been raised, and why all of this matters. To students of the New Testament, this book opens up Paul by presenting him as offering an entirely new kind of mysticism, necessarily and exclusively Christian.

A new way to think about kitchen design........1999-10-23

I am a professional cabinetmaker and designer. Johnny Grey's book opened my eyes to a new way of thinking about and designing kitchens for the way we use them in our modern lifestyles. It is easily the most inspirational book I have ever seen on the subject. I fully recommend this book to anyone in the trade wanting to take a fresh look at their craft.

In general, cabinetry from the big mass manufacturers are inadequate to fulfill Johnn'y ideas, because his whole design philosophy represents a new paradigm not yet integrated into our general culture. Therefore I do not recommend this book to the average homeowner wanting to remodel their kitchen unless they have a reasonable budget and can think creatively. And oh, yes, you are willing to establish a working relationship with an open minded cabinet maker skilled at custom design as well!

Expensive cabinetry - big kitchens.......1998-11-15

The biggest difficulty I had with this book is that nothing is standard. I guess that's the whole point. However the majority of the kitchens in this book require custom cabinetry. If you can do that yourself, you're in luck and this book is for you. However if you do not have a $30k budget for cabinetry to store your food and dishes then this book will do little to help you design your kitchen. The kitchens shown are mostly huge with a few exceptions and even the exceptions are using tens of thousands of dollars of custom cabinetry. If all you need are ideas of what is possible, browse through this book in a library or bookstore. If you need real life examples of what can be done with a small to medium size kitchen on the same size budget, forget this book. It won't help.

The finest kitchen design book I have ever seen........1997-10-01

Designing a kitchen is an excruciating task for most homeowners. The restrained and often stale design palette of most kitchen designers compounds the difficulty. Far too many "dream kitchens" are nothing more than expensive appliances attached to row upon horizontal row of bland cabinets and continuous work surfaces. Not only is this is esthetically uninteresting, but these modern designs are often not fully functional and detract from the spatial beauty of older homes. John Grey dares to be different. While decidedly modern in material choice and functionality, his kitchens evoke the flavor and visual beauty of older kitchens. The book is superbly illustrated with examples of his work. Mr. Grey's book is a passionate treatise on how to create a stunning yet fully functional kitchen interior. His ideas are provocative, among them a banishment of upper cabinets and a mixing of lower cabinet styles and height. The book is not a "how-to" book, it has scale drawings and colour pictures, but its focus is on the principles and not the particulars of kitchen remodelling. The audience of this book will be those who desire something different and special in a kitchen. It is an essential read for anyone planning a kitchen remodel and is of particular importance to those who have older homes.

As a sophomore advertising student in Richard's "Visual Literacy" class at SVA, I learned to see the hidden beauty of... just about everything. The assignments included were both artistically and intellectually stimulating; one project that I don't believe is included in the book was "Point of View," in which he asks you to show one object from six different perspectives (not from different views, more from say... a mouse's perspective, your mother's perspective, the perspective of a giant). It was the perfect blend of creating and thinking, both outside of the box. Buy this book. Use this book. It is great for creative block, and more fun than kindergarten!

I bought this book to help me teach a graphic design course to high school students and found that it's visual problems were very useful and interesting. It approaches visual communication and literacy from a direction I have not seen before. The students were really forced to think and be creative, and the other art teachers took notice. I would also recommend this to those not interested in graphic design because the principles in the book can be applied in other media as well.

Novel idea but flawed by its limited content.......2006-01-13

Before buying this book you have to realise this is merely an exercise book. The amount of explanation or theory is extremely limited. And neither they elaborate on the student examples they chose for their book. Nor do they explain why some solutions might be better than others. The exercises itself could be more challenging, they really seem to be aimed at first year students. You will have to buy at least a book on graphic design principles/theory to put the exercises in this book into the right context. Nothing wrong with that, but they 'forgot' to mention all that on the back cover, so to speak.
It's a nice idea, but its execution is flawed and way too limited to be the stroke of genious that some reviewers want you to believe.

I am an both a fine and graphic artist and its nice to see such ideas in print. Its a simple book but great for a reminder and refresher for stimulating ideas in groups and solo. I recommend this book for my students and colleagues alike because its short and to the point. Its also nice to hear how other artists get going on ideas and such.

As for the reviewer here that states it has "Little Undeep Thoughts.." firstly, his use of the fabricated word "Undeep" gives a clue to the reviewer, but secondly, they must realize creation is a mysterious entity, just as contributing artist Rich DiSilvio profoundly mentions in the book, "Don't always expect to find logical solutions in a logical place, as serendipity plays a part in the mysteries of invention." This is certainly NOT fluff, nor is the common sense offered by another contributor Alex Lloyd, who states, "Try really hard not to work on weekends. Nine out of ten, your clients will be enjoying the two days off with their family. So should you." Any creative person knows just how true and important it is to try and carve free time for oneself in the hustle bustle of deadlines and cranky clients. So that complaining reviewer here is either not a creative, or just expecting to find the exact answers to his own mental block with a current project. This book also is nicely designed, except the cover is a bit much and too cutesy. Granted there are some lame concepts and ideas put forth by some of the contributors, but it does contain good bits of advice and food for thought.

I don't really like this book so far. I had to get it for a intro to design class, and even the instructor stated that 50% of all students that she taught, didn't like this book. But, it's the only book that has a simple introduction to design.

I don't like the black and white only illustrations. For a design book, it's lacking what other books consider part of the design process: color. The examples are somewhat outdated and jaded heavily toward a "status quo" or even "conservative" design. The author states that design is subjective, yet consistently states what is wrong or right about the design process.

To be fair, though, this book is designed for beginners, and as such it seems to do its job. But, it is geared for the "conservative" designer, so if you feel that you are even "moderate", and definately if you considure yourself "avant-garde", this book is not for you.

I gave it a two star rating because because it severely lacked color as illustration. Some of the graphics would have been more appealing, or even a better example, if color was involved.

I have always enjoyed reading - and playing around with the ideas from - Kurt Hank's books. I have all his books, which include Rapid Viz, Draw!, The Change Navigator, Wake Up Your Creative Genius, Up Your Productivity.

Like his other books, this book is very well-illustrated, conceptually & graphically, with the following key chapters:

- Introduction: What is Design?
- Drawing;
- Design;
- Thinking;
- Problem Solving;
- Ideation;

It is packed with ideas, games, puzzles & exercises.

Although it is written for the novice designer, it nevertheless provides step by step approach to the practical strategies of seeing, thinking, drawing an designing your ideas - and concepts - visually and in 3D.

It is not a book just for reading. You have to work with it.

I must say: This book is really great stuff!

My first book before learning how to sketch and starting my studies in Industrial Design. The book provides TONS of insights, ways of creatively analyse situations. It presents brief natural phenomena that replicate in design. It does the important job of showing the reader/designer why you should be able to laugh at your own work. It does a great job of showing why/how the best is simply: SIMPLE. The book is best read with it's cousin: Rapid Viz. It turns on some lights in the mind of the student designer.... and therefore it was great for me to watch my copy get distributed from year to year and student to student until it was but a tangle of paper. But if you are into collecting read material: then the book (and Rapid VIz) can remain personal reference material because it is always refreshing to look in them once in a while. There is practically no text.. mostly sketchwork. It (once read) becomes pleasant/light coffee table material.
