Book Description
This dazzling novel from a fiercely talented young writer -- winner of the 2001 National Magazine Award for Fiction -- follows a woman whose indelible crime of passion leaves no one and nothing unscathed. The City Is a Rising Tide unfolds against a stunning backdrop of history, culture, and landscape -- from the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze to the refined vistas of Central Park, from the Cultural Revolution to the surreal world of moviemaking.
In New York City, Justine Laxness works as a money manager at a nonprofit, the Aquinas Foundation. Justine's love for her boss, Peter, is unrequited, despite their deep friendship and extensive history: they first met in the early 1970s, when Justine was a child living in Beijing with her Christian family. Peter, then twenty-eight and stationed in China while working for Richard Nixon, had fallen in love with Justine's nanny, Su Chen -- a Communist revolutionary under Mao -- and still feels guilt for his part in her disappearance and death.
Justine's obsession with Peter spurs her to embezzle funds from Aquinas and lend the money to James Nutter, a screenwriter and old college flame who has resurfaced in Justine's life after ten years. But every action she takes will have unforeseen ramifications, creating a tidal wave of betrayal and destruction. Lyrical and suspenseful by turns, The City Is a Rising Tide is an enchanting work of luminous prose and uncommon imagination.
Customer Reviews:
Great characters.......2007-07-06
What a terrific read. Lee's lyrical prose is put to great use in this novel. The characters feel like old friends.
WONDERFUL, MAGICAL PROSE.......2007-07-05
As a poet (Sunlight from Another Day) I strive for the kinds of comparisons that Lee uses. They're deep and distinctive - and lyrical. I'll just say "ditto" to all the 5-star reviews here. Lee is a Master. A transformational writer.
(I thought the ending made for a fine sense of the continuing Journey Home that we're all on - no matter what else may happen in our lives. See Harold Klemp's books for the best on this?)
The City is a Rising Tide is a masterful, absorbing novel.......2007-04-09
Lovely, witty The City is a Rising Tide is full of lyrical prose and insight: "it seems ridiculous that you can just reach out and touch a person whenever you feel like it"; "sleep in its mercy pulling the plug on their personalities." Each short chapter has moments of richly rendered, unconventional wisdom. And each character in the book's absorbing, unusual plot is singular and idiosyncratic, not one of them representative of any idea or genre, only themselves.
If Only the City Were a Vistula.......2007-01-09
I first became a Rebecca Lee fan years ago when I came across her story "The Banks of the Vistula" online. It's a great story. The prose is limpid. It's lucid. It's luminous. Seriously. I've had people tell me they feel the prose is overdone, but those people are crazy. It's great prose, and a great story. In fact, I think it's one of the best short stories to be written in, oh, let's say, the last 30 years.
I even wrote Lee a fan email at that time. She didn't write back, but hey, I don't hold a grudge.
Needless to say, then, I was very much looking forward to the publication of her first novel, which is this. She published; I ordered and read it. And enjoyed it, very much. I'm sorry to say, though, that I agree with the earlier reviewer who mentioned that the ending of the book felt rushed.
I'm just guessing, of course, but to me it seemed like the writer couldn't decide quite what to do with the ending, and thus lingered over it a long time. Perhaps overly long. Who knows, perhaps she didn't want a traditional narrative arc. Maybe she doesn't like packages tied up with ribbons.
If so, I respect that.
Nevertheless, this package felt dumped into the gift bag a little too hastily. I could have used just a tad more "Hi this is Holden I'm writing to you from the looney bin to let you know everything is okay" at the end.
Does this mean, though, that I do not heartily endorse the book? Certainly not. I mean really, do you read for plot? Or do you read for great, perfect, singular characterizations; for lucid, limpid, luminous prose; and for books and stories that, regardless of the scope of the world they protray, turn a searchlight onto some aspect of human nature?
Yeah, that's what I thought.
lyrical madness.......2006-11-10
This story is disquieting, off-beat, humorous, thought-provoking, but most of all, it is written in a compelling lyrical voice that slowly draws you in. I'll look for more from Rebecca Lee.

Book Description
Fledgling wizard Tony is now an assistant director on "Darkest Night," the syndicated TV series about a vampire detective. But it's hard to concentrate on the latest episode when a Demonic Convergence is allowing lesser demons entry to our world, and the sexy stuntwoman, Leah, is also an immortal Demongate whose death would open the way to unimaginable peril. Can Tony halt the Convergence, keep Leah alive, and still have a career? Or will his artistic ambitions-not to mention the rest of the world-go up in smoke?

Good Smoke.......2007-08-15
Another fine book by Tanya Huff. Interesting characters and a really dangerous enemy they face. I would not be upset if I see these characters again. Tony Foster seems to develop with each book, Henry Fitzroy stays the same, letting Tony look more impressive as the books progress
Sex, Magic and 16 mm Film.......2007-01-27
This was a fast, fun read. Clearly Huff let her hair down when writing this third book in the Tony Foster series. Lots of references to other works of fiction-- printed and video. Anyone get the Kolchak reference? the original, good one not the remake. That's the sort of thing that makes me keep coming back to these books for more.
5 stars for Smoke!.......2006-11-27
I loved the first two Tony books; I like them more than the Henry ones, actually, but this last installment was probably the best one. You can't help but feel for Tony; he's such a sympathetic character.
I honestly could not stop laughing and the end made me want more. It's too bad that this one is the last one in the series!
A wizard, a Demongate, and a Vampire walk into a bar..........2006-09-11
This book is the third in the series starring Henry Fitzroy's old sidekick Tony. Let me note that while the book is enjoyable as a standalone, you will get far more out of it if you have read the first two in this series, since there are quite a few references to the Shadowlord of the first book, Smoke and Shadows, and the haunted house of the second book, Smoke and Mirrors. You will get even more out of this series if you've read Huff's earlier series about Henry Fitzroy, romance writer, [...] son of King Henry VIII, and vampire. (If you check my profile, you can find reviews of all five books in that series.) Constable Jack Elson, for example, is an even more interesting character if you can also recall Mike Celluci, Vicki's fellow cop, and also the werewolf cop from "Blood Trail."
Since other reviewers have summarized the plot, I won't go into that. (Besides, those of you who read Huff know that many of her books have variations on the same plot: a hole opens up between hell and our earth, and our protagonists have to close it. This is not a complaint; I am continually amazed at how interesting she manages to make that same plot over and over.) Instead, let me tell you a few of the things I specifically enjoyed about this book:
* Huff's wonderful sense of humor. Examples: Tony turns on the TV and sees "some guy eating a bug on either the Learning Channel or FOOD - he didn't stay long enought to see if it came with a lecture on habitat or a raspberry vinaigrette" and the use of cherry cough syrup as a warding spell.
* The references to many classic science fiction and fantasy stories and books - not just well known ones such as LOTR, but also to stories that only literate and experienced SF fans are likely to have read; this isn't just catering to the reader who is currently reading urban vampire fantasy because it's "in" - although there's nothing wrong with that; welcome, new fantasy readers, and we hope you stay and enjoy the rest of the genre!
*The references also to many classic TV shows and movies, both SF and non-SF, everything from the coyote and the anvil to "Where castle?" to car chases.
*The characters who are neither all-bad nor all-good, but show signs that even though they are relatively "bit parts" right now, they have complex enough personalities that they might become more. Kevin Groves, the obnoxious tabloid reporter, for example, has a few good qualities, and shows some signs that in an emergency, he might be capable of doing good things. And Chester Bane, well, I have the feeling there's a LOT we don't know about Chester, and some of it will turn out to be supernatural sooner or later.
I do have a few small quibbles with the book: the Demon Lords' names don't sound right for demons to me. (Demons have first and last names? Really?) And Huff uses the phrase "red-gold eyebrows" too often, which is especially confusing since sometimes she is referring to Mason Reed, and sometimes to Henry. But those are pretty small change.
I will say that those of you who are squeamish about sex - although I doubt there are too many of such people reading urban vampire fantasies to begin with - would find some things to be squeamish about here. There is sex - gay, straight, and mixed. It's all necessary to the plot, appropriate in context, tastefully done, and not overdone - but it's there. So if that sort of thing bothers you... there is also a lot of use of four-letter words, again appropriate in context and not overdone, but if those bother you... They didn't bother me at all, because they went with the plot and characters so well, and let me tell you, I have a pretty short threshhold for unnecessary sex scenes and unnecessary vulgarity, so this must be well done, since I liked it. But you probably wouldn't want to give this book to a 12-year-old to read. I'd say 16 and up, at least, older if you really have hangups about your teenagers being exposed to anything at all graphic.
In summary: great continuation of the series, best enjoyed if you read all the others in order first; terrific characters, with lots of potential for more.
Tanya's "Blood" series spinoff coming to its own.......2006-08-08
Tony Foster is now a TAD on the set of Canada's only syndicated vampire detective show, "The Darkest Night." Despite a hard life during his youth on the streets, he's working hard to make the director's chair.
The only problem is--real life supernatural events keep interfering. In this third book of the "Smoke" series, a Demonic Convergence threatens to loose the demons from hell and end the world as we know it.
This time--Tony's powers as a wizard are no secret. His boss, Chester Bane, actually gives him time off to stop the Convergence--not that he's got a choice, since it seems the focus spot for the demons to come in is "Darkest Night's" sound-stage. Also, the demon fighting team has a few more players: Amy, the odd but fearless secretary, Mountie Jack who's been following the oddness surrounding Tony for a long time, and even Lee--the 'human sidekick' of the TV show's vampire, Raymond Dark (Mason).
We also get a romance interest. Lee, who Tony previously believed was straight, is definitely putting his flirt on. Henry Fitzroy, a vampire and Tony's old love interest, is back and well, never gave up on him and Tony being together.
There are some slow spots at the end, but overall, this book is funny and fast-paced. The series is picking up and I certainly hope there are more of them.

William Johnstone is the master of the series novel!.......2001-06-27
With the Hot Fart (Ben Raines' verbage) Khamsin invading along the southern tier of America, Ben and his people discover a new threat. The Night People, cannibalistic heathens who hide in the sewers and underground of cities, have come out and made themselves known. Ben and his people must now fight both them and the Lybian in an attempt to regain America.
Good action.......1999-02-05
This book is not the best in the series but you need to read it anyway. I have read it 3 times already and I still enjoy it. It places the Rebels against a terrorist who believes himself a religious person. The Rebels once again take up arms and start kicking the ass off of lots of people. I think the general population shall like this adition to the series.
Book Description
Booklist : Gr. 6-12. First published in 1988, this authoritative history has now been expanded to include newly available facts and crucial issues for discussion. The core of the book remains the same, with a writing style both passionate and controlled, combining eyewitness accounts, statistics, and commentary in a spacious format that includes documentary photos (many of them taken by the Nazis) on almost every page. Rogasky has added material about the roles of Nazi "helpers," including German police and bystanders. There's a new section on the Nazi persecution of gay men, and there's more about the rescuers. The chapter on whether the Holocaust is unique covers horrifying recent events, such as the genocide in Rwanda, and a new chapter gives details about contemporary hate groups and answers those who deny that the Holocaust happened. The bibliography now includes Web sites and chapter source notes. This is an outstanding resource for the Holocaust curriculum
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive.......2006-06-14
This book is a must have for anyone interested in the Holocaust. I teach a unit on this topic to eighth graders and we use this book as a text. The chapters are short, reader-friendly, and yet very complete. I have yet to find another non-fiction Holocaust book as comprehensive as this.
An excellent choice .......2006-01-23
This book was wonderful. By the time I finished reading it, I was crying. The story of the holocaust is well expressed in the pages of this book. I felt that when I was reading it I was actually in a concentration camp witnessing the events. I never knew that all that happened to Jews. They were baked in ovens, put in gas chambers, shot on spot, or attacked by dogs. They had to endure long periods of time without health care or food. This book had pictures, maps and great writing. I think that this book is great but I don't reccomend it for children under 12 because of pictures, and describtions on treatment of Jews. Great job Baraba!
Smoke and Ashes.......2005-05-18
If you are really into learning more about the holocaust then you need to read Smoke and Ashes by Barbara Rogasky. This book is an emotional book. It goes into detail on what the SS soilders did to the jewish people , and to the gypsies, homosexuals, the elderly ,and the mentaly ill. The Nazis would put them in gas chambers. They used zyclon B. They would burn them in ovens. If you really want to know more then I highly reccomend this book
a Review.......2004-05-24
Though im not jewish and am a christian i was interested in the holocaust so i bought this book through my school. While readin this book i cried at how much the jews and mentally ill and gypsies had to suffer just because they were jew mentally ill etc. Obviously this book isn't a happy one it tells of the holocaust and answers parctically all of your answers. This book is a good book and though like i said its a historic one that tells how cruel the world was this is a good book for people studying about the holocaust or part of what happened in europe during world war II.
Good Holocaust book.......2000-05-12
I liked this book because it has good detals. It ezplains what people had to go through during the Holocaust.I recomed this book because it is a good way to learn about the Holocaust. The strong point was when the war was over. The weak point was when the naizs killed alot of people.

Book Description
A new kind of antique Chinese furniture swept onto the market in the early 1990s. It appealed to people who were sure they did not like Chinese furniture, people who were ready for new ideas about Orientalia, and people who couldn't afford the five- and six-figure prices routinely attached to classical Chinese pieces. This new variety has struck a surprisingly sympathetic chord with Western tastes, and the prices are still surprisingly low. It comes from 18th and 19th century China, the last days of the emperors, and expresses a sense of creative freedom, vigor, and visual elegance. Here are cabinets, tables, chairs, and accessories in various woods and finishes to enhance each room of your home. This book offers the first comprehensive and compelling look at Chinese country furniture from the consumer's point of view. 380 color images, some in room settings, others with great detail, bring the beautiful designs to life. A guide to pricing makes this a useful tool for collectors and dealers alike. Because of a changing political and economic landscape in China, this late-Ching furniture has flooded Western markets, giving retail customers equal footing with collectors and keeping prices reasonable, for now. Because the quality covers a wide range, it takes an informed buyer to navigate between the real and the not-quite-so-real. The information in this beautiful book will give the reader the bearings they need to make the right decisions.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Reference.......2007-10-01
With regard to furniture, the McCormick's state: "China gets under your skin." How true that is. Their book provides a wonderful coffee table reference for the collector or designer. The selection of pieces photographed is a fantastic representation of the vernacular furniture and accessories China has to offer. Their book also provides interesting information about the amazing background of these pieces since the Qing period.
Building Appreciation For An Underappreciated Genre.......2007-06-12
This book creates appreciation for the type of Chinese furniture and accessories that are both within financial reach and that work with today's lifestyles. The author has revealed a well kept secret. It's beautiful. It's informative. It's a must read for anyone interested in history and/or the decorative arts. One of the best books of its kind.
disappointing.......2002-05-09
The images are very nice and well photographed, however as a work of scholarship it is flawed. There are a large number of datelines that are so clearly wrong as to question the authors expertise. I won't bore you with a image by image critique but suffice to say that there are better books on the market such as Friends of the House or Kai Yin Lo's book on Vernacular furniture all of which are real works of quality. As for the price guides included in the book, how helpful is it to give a ...[broad] price range... for a piece of furniture without explaining why one will be the lower price the other the more expensive.
Highly recommended and beautifully presented.......2001-01-23
In Chinese Country Antiques: Vernacular Furniture And Accessories, c. 1780-1920, Andrea and Lynde McCormick successfully collaborate to offer a comprehensive, authoritative, reader friendly survey of antiquarian Chinese furniture. Profusely illustrated with hundreds of full color photographs, there are chapters devoted to provenance, finishes, fakes, cabinets, chairs and stools, tables, and accessories. Of special note are the chapters on fakes, and accessories. A highly recommended and beautifully presented introduction to Chinese antiques for the novice collector or student, Chinese Country Antiques is further enhanced with an informative appendix on "Woods" and a brief bibliography for further, more specialized or detailed study.
Good Pictures, Insufficient Content.......2000-11-07
With all the fuss about Ming and early Ching Dynasty antiques, I am glad that someone has finally written a book about furniture from the late Ching Dynasty. At face value, it is a very attractive book indeed, with colourful pictures of antique Chinese furniture and accessories. However, those hoping to learn more about antiques from this book will be sorely disappointed. Not much was written about the history behind the antiques, such as the difference in styles during different times in China's history or even differences in styles between regional furniture. This book was written by people who own an antique business, so what you read is rather like what you would hear should you walk into an antique shop and speak to the shopkeepers. The literature covers only the first 29 pages of the book, and save for the last 2 pages where there is a short discussion on the various kinds of wood, the rest of the 176 page book contains page after page of photographs of furniture and accessories, with no further explainatory notes.

Just beautiful - what an inspiration.......2003-03-20
I happened upon this one in the local library -- I didn't know what stumpwork was - but after spending about an hour with this book, I went to Amazon.com and ordered my own copy. The history, beautiful photographs, and detailed and easy-to-understand instructions make this book a must-have.
wonderful.......2000-08-10
This is a beautiful book of excellent quality hardcover, that is very inspirational for lovers of stumpwork. I agree with the other reviewers; it is essential to have the first book 'Stumpwork: A collection of fruits, flowers and insects' as there are constant cross references to instructions only found in the first book.
A must for any stitcher.......2000-01-09
I agree with the person from Virginia, this is an excellent book with beautiful projects but you need to have her first book to understand the references. Personally, this doesn't bother me. Besides, what stitcher doesn't have a large stash anyway? :) The suggested projects are absolutely gorgeous!
Very good book but requires previous companion book........1999-02-07
Well written and illustrated book however it references the first book ( Stumpwork Embroidery : A Collection of Fruits, Flowers and Insects for Contemporary Raised Embroidery ) extensively making this book a necessary companion.
Pleasurable to look at and easy to use.......1998-09-05
This book is ideal for both beginners and expert Stumpworkers. The diagrams are excellent and the colours are really true to life. Along with the books of Muriel Best this will become an all time classic

The many shades of white, beautifully complemented by the velvety verdure of evergreens and ivy, are a perfect choice for holiday trimmings--the decorations, the accents and accessories, the table settings. Glowing with candlelight and sparkling with sun-kissed snow, these pages are filled with glorious arrays of white and green. Noted designer Tricia Foley has a way with white: dozens of elegant little ornaments, a creamware-bedecked table, a frosty tree encrusted with crystal and silver decorations, an all-white gingerbread house, even a boxwood-swagged gauzy bed canopy. "Like a Currier and Ives print or a snow-capped New England steeple," Foley reminds us, "the image of the perfect white Christmas is firmly etched in our minds." Her visual feast shows how truly stunning holiday decor can be when planned in a symphony of whites. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Everyone knows that the best Christmas is a white Christmas-a traditional celebration with snow capping the eaves, a fire roaring in the fireplace, and a mistletoe ball hanging in the doorway. Tricia Foley, best-selling author of Having Tea, Linens and Lace, and The Natural Home, brings back the magic of the time-honored customs, along with her own white-on-white decorating style, to create the kind of Christmas that will make treasured memories for years to come.
With ideas for every room of the house, Foley shows how to borrow from the colors of nature in winter 'pure white and evergreen' to dress up the house for the holidays. She includes simple yet timeless suggestions for draping greens over the bed canopy, hanging all-white stockings of every size and fabric, lighting with votive candles, candelabra, and sconces, and wrapping with handmade papers and raffia ribbons. For entertaining, White Christmas presents the perfect Christmas tea, with snowy linens and homemade scones. Helpful tip boxes cover Christmas lore, favorite tales, and Christmas crafts, and a resource section provides useful lists of addresses, related books, and holiday songs.
For anyone who wants to make the most of the holidays, Tricia Foley's White Christmas is the ideal holiday decorating and entertaining companion.

Lovely.......2006-12-17
This book was full of beautiful snowy white Christmas pictures. More pictures than projects, more of a decorating book. A lovely coffee table book, especially during the holidays.
