This book is a very interesting, exiting and humorous. It is a real life story of love and friendship, that will appeal to readers both young and old. Remus has a winning, positively personality that people recognized at once.

This is a true tale of the stray wild dog, who looking for a place to have her imminent brood of pups, takes up residence under the shed of two middle-aged batchelor academics at Princeton. They slowly befriend her and coax her out to trust them and take food for the pups. Despite their busy lives she is greatly loved, and she and one of her pups become very much part of the family. The story is told very simply and lovingly. They have some entertaining experiences in French restaurants and aboard ocean-going liners. Recommended for dog-lovers everywhere, who will all relate to it strongly.

I stumbled upon this book in the library recently, and have since told all my friends they must read it!! I think the fact that it was written by a man made it even more special. It always surprises me when men show their feelings so openly and with total abandonment, eg: Nicholas Sparks, James Michael Pratt, to name a few... The love and devotion that these two Princeton professors had for these dogs was so intense. Their dedication to the animals was astounding and therefore reciprocated in great abundance. Anyone who owns a dog, has ever owned a dog, or needs to be convinced of the immeasurable experience of owning a dog, needs to read this book. It touched me more than any story of animal/person unconditional love and devotion that I have ever read. A must read!

Absorbing work by Hal Borland.......2006-08-15

I didn't know what to expect when I ordered this book, but it had a title similar to another book I just read, so I was curious. When I read the introduction, I realized that this was a book written almost half a century ago and reissued recently. I learned that Hal Borland had died in the 1970s, but had been a prolific writer about many things and especially outdoor life. His story about the dog who chose to stay with him and his wife began on Christmas night and continues over the ensuing years. His descriptions of the dog, Pat, his rural life as a writer, sportsman, and gardener are completely absorbing. They draw you into the world of the upper Connecticut valley by the Housatonic River. I soon began to wonder about his wife, Barbara, and found that her obituary had just been published in the NY Times on the day I looked for reference to her in Google. I felt a real sense of loss at that. This is how Hal Borland's wonderful descriptive writing lead me to feel as though I was back in time and there with them over 50 years ago. Most of all, Pat, his dog, comes alive as a unique yet thoroughly doglike personality who charms and delights the reader. Pat is just one more example of why humans love dogs so much.

Warm and Humorus memoir of a four-footed family member.......2006-11-28

I read this book as a teen, around the time I discovered the James Herriot "All Creatures Great and Small" series of books, and found the same warmth, love and humor in Hal Borland's narrative about a couple of stray dogs, Pat and Mike, that adopted Hal and his wife.

The ongoing interaction with their beautiful surroundings, wildlife and local dogs and the resolution to the Mike issue are all handled with a storyteller's care for a great tale. The humor is often understated, sometimes poignant and always engaging.

Even before Mike's fate is determined, you understand that Pat is the dog who came to stay and you travel along with Hal on his everyday adventures into Pat's world from the woodchuck battles, to the reek of a skunked dog, to their bitter disagreements over a stray in heat (a drastic departure from their otherwise easy camaraderie) and finally to the day years later when a man comes to their door looking for the dog he lost long ago.

This is a wonderful book for teens to adults, even if you haven't found that one dog who fits seamlessly into your life (or if he hasn't found you yet).

This book (and most by Borland) can be enjoyed by most any age reader. I do however, think that the age who would enjoy it most would be in the 40+ range. This is a very sweet, funny, and yet realistic piece of material. If you love animals and the country, this is for you.

Another very similar author would be Gladys Tabor.

I have a bit of a sentimental attachment to this book as it was one of my first "adult" books, given to me by my grandmother when I was 9. I have read this memoir of a man and his 'found' dog at least a dozen times through and have, actually, visited the house and grounds. Hal Borland, little known now, was a much read naturalist and writer for the New York Times. I don't like his novels so well, except for "When the Legends Die" one of his later books, but his non-fiction is excellent -- factual, loving, but not much anthropomorphism. The dog has his own dignity and the author does his best to convey this. If you are looking for a truthful and loving recounting of the relationship between an older man and a dog, as opposed to the usual sentimental 'boy and his dog' bit, this is a book worth finding.

Ailia Shipwright has been recognized as the human savior Princess of the Stars Tryna Lia, expected to defeat the malevolent God Valdur though her enemy contains similar power coupled with much more experience and no morals. Over the years Ailia has learned to use her vast deity-like abilities (see THE STONE OF THE STARS and THE EMPIRE OF THE STARS) and her allies have helped her prepare for the final confrontation coming very soon.

Meanwhile one of her deadliest foes the Avatar of Valdur Prince Morlan remains almost exclusively in his dragon body as Mandrake prepares himself to become the host of Valdur. While their respective allies war all over heaven, earth, hell and every other place in between, the final battle remains between Ailia and Mandrake fortified by Valdur on the evil God's home territory. The chances of the Princess triumphing seem remote at best.

This is a fabulous climax to a terrific fantasy trilogy as readers who have followed Ailia will appreciate the strong final confrontation with the Baird universe at stake. The story line is fast-paced and action-packed while loaded with all forms of mythological creatures especially shapeshifting dragons. Still the saga belongs to the heroine whose coming of age might mean her death and that of everyone she cares about. The pressure of being destiny's darling still remains from the previous novels, but the Princess steps to the plate to fight mano vs. woman with everything at stake. It is better to read the previous books first knowing that THE ARCHONS OF THE STARS is a five star triumph.

I totally disagree that the plot lost its way and the she sympathized with the bad guys was a wayward thing to do. Though, I agree, there were a few areas that could have been honed, I like the overall effect in the end. I liked that she told both sides of the story and did a remarkable thing as a writer - she was able to bring varying different viewpoints and plots together cohesively.

Her knowledge of the net, computers, and the human brain were intriquing and additive to me as a reader. I have read many books from experienced writers and have yet to discover some of the abilities this writer had in pulling several things together. Sure, charactors were cliche, but so what Syne did something new and different in this fast pace story by not making the antagonist and protagonist so black and white.

I have always enjoyed Syne Mitchell's work and I looked forward to Technogenesis. However, initially, I became quickly skeptical of the book. I thought that the plot moved too quickly in the beginning, and I wanted to know more about the world before Jasmine was thrust into what seemed to be a predictable story of government plots and secret missions. I wanted more time before her discovery of Gestalt, and I worried about the direction the story was going in.

However, I grew to appreciate the story that did develop, and finally I rather liked the book. While at times there were many clichés, I thought there was a good pace to the plot and it certainly kept my interest. I liked the way Mitchell created her vision of the future, and it was a vision that I wanted to know more about and read about. I have always liked Mitchell's ability to make the concepts in her book very understandable and engaging. The writing was crisp and clever, and overall, Technogenesis was a terrific sci-fi book.

Simple badly written novel.......2005-07-03

It is the 22nd century. Jasmine Reese, the protagonist discovers that people are manipulated on the Net by a metamind.

Jasmine is grabbed by the NSA and coerced into their service. She has to infiltrate a commune of scientists who are working on creating a second metamind and discover their true goals.

So far so good. However, Mitchell loses track and control of the story. From the outset it is clear that the existence of metaminds is obstructing the freedom of the individual and something to rebel against; during the story, however, she radically changes her position and strives for a solution that enables the existence of megaminds. She actually sympathizes with the 'bad guys'.

My 'suspense of disbelief' bubble was destroyed from the very start of the story and never returned.

People interact with each other across the Net, but still walk around in the physical world? Hard to believe.

Metaminds syphoning off brainpower of the connected for their own existence? Nice concept, but it grew to resemble a complete rip-off of the 'The Matrix'. Not very original.

Sympathy for the bad guys when it is evident that they are up to no good? Please, get yourself back to writing class!

In short: starting from a pretty good premise, this story degenerated into a complete foul-up. Which makes me wonder - once again - who is responsible for okaying this kind of pulp? And, where do the critics praising this kind of trash come from? Deep space?

the birth of sci-fi.......2004-02-28

i used to hate sci-fi...i mean i really loathed it, but then i read technogenesis. ever since, i haven't been able to stop reading them. i'm even taking advanced sci-fi classes now, all because of this book. but anyways, Technogenesis...i read the whole thing in less than one whole day. it was great! i've read it about 100 times now. the way the author details her text paints a vivid picture in people's mind. the whole time i could "see" what i read...as if it were a movie, just in my mind.

Interesting Look at the Future of the Net.......2003-05-28

In "Technogenesis" Syne Mitchell does what I wouldn't have thought possible--she's created character-based cyberpunk. Her Jasmine Reese is conflicted and capable and Mitchell's look at a future Net in which an AI uses people's minds as, well, human resources is chilling.

The book's heroes (if you can even use that word) have a touch of larceny and the villains (ditto) turn out to have good reasons for their apparent villainy.

This is Mitchell's second book (her first, "Murphy's Gambit," is a reworking of classic space opera) and she has a flair for fast-paced action and fluid prose.

This is Brad Steiger's best book. It summarizes Max Freedom long's series of books on the huna. To the student of the occult this will open many doors. It did for me.

After reading this authors later work "Totems: The Tranformational Powe Of Your Personal Animal Totem" I was expecting great things from this volume.

To say that I was disappointed would be an understatement. I had read most of this material in Max Freedom Long's (The Father of Current HUNA as we understand it.)volumes. The case reports in this volume are direct word for word copies of a small number of the case reports from "The Secret Science Behind Miracles" Max Freedom Long.

I would recommend for you to buy "The Secret Science Behind Miracles", and "The Secret Science At Work" instead.

A Pictorial History of the Famous Volkswagen Beetle, from the very early days right thru until 1992.. Once You pick this book up ,You won't be able to put it down.. its that good... You will find yourself reading this book over again and again..
What was on a 1951 beetle only for that year? You will find the answer and photo in this book. It also covers the Hebmuller , Karmann Ghia and Karmann Cabriolets versions too.
Have You heard of the 411-412, 914/4-914/6, the K70 and the 1302S & 1303S Beetles? You can read about them in this great little Book... I rate it 5 out of 5...

The subtitle of this book "The Quest for Accurate Timekeeping" neatly sums up the very essence, the raison d'être, for the art and science of mechanical. Given the central importance of the subject, it is hard to understand why there has not been any serious, in-depth book published on precision horology in 25 years (since Erbrich, Präzisionspenduluhren, 1978, was published, but only in German), and never a book in English. Not only the precision timekeeping enthusiasts, but any serious horologist, owes Derek Roberts thanks for having finally filled this gap. Anybody familiar with prior books by Roberts, such as his volumes on Skeleton Clocks, Mystery Clocks, or Carriage Clocks will have high expectations, and will not be disappointed.

However I must point out that the title is somewhat misleading. Roberts set out to produce the comprehensive treatise on precision timekeeping, a vast and broad subject, and after many years of research, collecting material and writing he had produced a work that could never fit into one volume, and indeed he had planed this to be a three volume work. Schiffer Publishing balked at that concept and forced the author to publish it as three separate books. (The second and third, named "English Precision Pendulum Clocks" and "Precision Pendulum Clocks: France, Germany, America and Recent Advancements", are due out in intervals of half a year). The publisher must have felt that there were better market opportunities in selling at first one book only. Marketing considerations must also have driven the misleading title; something along the lines of "An introduction to Precision ..." or "An overview of Precision ..." would have been more accurate and more descriptive for this book. Furthermore it soon becomes clear to the reader that abandoning the original "one-title, three volumes" concept came late in the production, because the text repeatedly refers to examples in the yet unpublished companion books. In one instance the reader is told to go to chapter 28 (in a 10 chapter book) for further information. To this reviewer such sloppiness in the final editing is slightly annoying.

Once the reader however realizes that the text was designed to set the stage, to merely introduce the topic of precision timekeeping, it becomes clear that such goal is achieved in a superb manner. The specialist reader will find a concise and very readable introduction, while the more casual horologist may well be content with getting a good overview of the subject, without the burden of the details and technicalities of the volumes yet to be published.

Unlike in his earlier books, Roberts does not attempt to write it all himself; actually 4 of the 10 chapters appear under the byline of eminent experts in their specialized fields (Jonathan Betts on Astronomy and Precision Time; John Martin on Escapements; Denys Vaughn on Electric Clocks, and A.D. Stewart provides a 200 year timeline style summary of the subject). The core of this volume - and the core in the quest for the perfect pendulum clock - is the 50 page chapter on the compensated pendulum, dealing with all the various approaches to both temperature and barometric compensation. This subject obviously is also close to the heart of the author. The last two chapters deal with the achievements of Thompion and Graham (the early strivers in the UK for more perfect pendulums) and Harrison (the first horologist utterly devoted to perfect timekeeping).

The value of the book is as much in its illustrations as it is in the text. Some 280+ illustrations have been carefully selected to illustrate the points made, with careful attention to assuring that the photograph taken clearly shows the feature described in the text. Many illustrations are functional, technical diagrams, with captions (often in the style of "Lever A, lifts the Notch B, releasing pin C, letting wheel E turn ...") sometimes taking more space than the image. Clearly Roberts has taken as much effort and pride to get the illustrations and captions right, as he has devoted to the text. He follows the convention of showing most of the sample clocks he describes in several images, often from different angles, all under one illustration number.

The book succeeds in working well for various types of readers: On one level it is an enjoyable "coffee table" book with pretty pictures of superb world-class clocks, as well as interesting tid-bits of technical knowledge to be learned by the casual, unsystematic browser. Unlike most books appealing also to the superficial reader, Roberts however also succeeds in producing a scholarly text that stands up to highest scrutiny for the individual who is willing to read every caption and pursue every footnote. The references to sources and further bibliographic resources (grouped at the end of every chapter) are voluminous; the compensated pendulum chapter alone lists 32 publications providing additional details.

"Precision Pendulum Clocks: The Quest for Accurate Timekeeping", and its future companion volumes, are indeed destined to become the standard text on the subject, and should be part of any well rounded horological library.

Almost all of a pendulum clock's accuracy resides in its pendulum. If the pendulum is accurate, the clock will be accurate. This was just what I needed to review Multiplication and Division facts. It can be practiced as a timed drill or self paced. At the end of each drill you can print out a page that shows the math facts that the current student needs to practice.
This software requires Quick-Time, Microsft WIndows 95 or higher, 24MB Ram, 640 X 480 16 bit color video, 16 bit sound card 486DX-66MHz or faster processor, 40MB free disk space, and 4X- CD-Rom. I purchased this for home for my daughter and individual copies for our school's computer lab and Math classes. This software is set up to use competitively as well. Two players may play at a time and each receive their own print out when the game is over. GREAT SOFTWARE. My 9 year old loved it!

Definitely worth your money and time.......2000-05-01

These cards were a great help in passing my MCP exam in Server 4. I started studying for the exam with Sybex Test Success, and followed-up with Exam Cram flashcards. These cards filled in most of the gaps from the Sybex book, but didn't quite have everything I needed for the exam (the Exam Cram cards filled in the rest of the gaps). These cards were not quite as informative about Server 4 as the Workstation 4 cards were about Workstation, but they certainly did help. Overall a good set to study from.

I've used the FlashCards for both Net Ess and Server and passed both on the first try. I got an 899 on Server and these cards were part of that. I used these cards to get a start on the material and supplemented with the Exam Cram book and the MCSE Readiness Review (indispensable).

This book is basically a compilation of fancy projects, most of which are useful, but with instructions that aren't very comprehensive. The introduction says that both advanced and new users can get a lot out of this book, but that's not true if you're latter. Beginners will find themselves following the book's VERY lean instructions without a clue as to why or what they are doing. Sure it gives you an idea of what is possible in Flash, but so can just browsing the internet for Flash oriented sites... and that won't cost you 45 dollars.

This book is really a set of examples of what can be done with flash and imagination. Once you look through the book you'll first be amazed by what can be done and then inspired to realize that you can do almost anything you can imagine using flash as a tool.

The instructions are very terse, but don't read this book for instructions on how to build the examples shown, read this book to see what can be done. Building the examples is of little value because they've already been done. Building your own dreams with ideas from the book is the point.

The book is expensive,... for the size. The explanation is that every page contains color graphics showing what the project looks like and demonstrating the results. This is an expensive printing process, it looks good but price is the significant negative for this book. In the twenty dollar range this would have been a 5 star book; if you are particularly price conscious you might want to reduce it to 3 stars.

The authors are very respected in the flash development world and I find it nice to work with quality graphics as opposed to plain old circle, squares, and triangles. You could do a lot worse and I recommend this book if you haven't already upgraded to flash 5.

esperaba mas de este libro. Si bien trae buenos ejemplos esta demasiado enfocado en ellos, lo cual para mi por lo menos hizo practicamente inaplicables la mayoria de los Scripts que tenia cada ejemplo pues no explicaba el porque la utlizacion de cada uno; eso me llevo a perder demasiado tiempo tratando de entender cada uno.

I found the book very incomplete, alot of the examples were not explained very well and you had to guess as to what they wanted you to do next. I don't need a step by step approach, but I didn't want to have to guess how to do what they did in their examples.

The layout of the book and projects were good. I just didn't like the way it was written with holes in steps. It would be great for someone to gain idea's as to how to start a project. But as a beginner book (which I never did see what level it was written for anyway)IMHO it bit!

The companion cd had shareware programs which are so so.

Certainly not worth the 42.00 I spent for it! I'm still looking for a good flash book. This was my first purchase of one. So I don't have a lot to compare it too. I have read enough of other books to be able to tell when something is not written completely.

David Emberton and Scott Hamlin (authors of the book) Should have tried giving the example projects to a group of people and see how they would do by the book only! I bet they would be as frustrated as I was.

Well Worth the $25 investment.......2000-02-08

I am a big fan of the other MCSE "dummies", books. This one is good, although it is not quite up to the standards of some of the others. It needs to be augmented with another study guide. Given the price of transcender tests, it is probably worth the $25 for the practice CD alone, but the book has some shortcomings. For example, the book has only a page or two on troubleshooting database problems and ODBC driver errors, but I saw no less than 7 or 8 troubleshooting questions relating to database connectivity on the test. I recommend the book, but I wouldn't expect to pass the test using this as my only study guide.

Basically "Ace It! IIS4" with different questions.......1999-07-08

I just finished writing a review of Iseminger's "Ace It!" for the IIS 4.0 exam, and see no reason to repeat that here -- because they are just about the same book. Certain chapters read exactly the same.

Not a knock on the book, because it does a good job of covering IIS 4.0 basics. It does not include essential ODBC error information, though. The questions in the Ace It! book do a better job of testing your understanding, in my opinion, but you can't go wrong with either. Just don't buy both!
