Book Description
A restless man, obsessed with dog races, embarks on a cross-country journey leading to his Idaho hometown in this debut novel reminiscent of Catcher in the Rye.
Luke Rivers is a part-time bartender and full-time gambler who dreams of scoring big at the dog races. He travels the greyhound circuit with his wife, Jenny, and their young son, Jake, until one morning he wakes up in a motel in Rapid City, South Dakota, to discover that Jenny has left him and taken Jake with her. Now, for the first time, Luke must confront himselfboth the tragic family past that led him to gambling and the uncertain future that lies ahead--while coping with a bewildering present. The Greyhound God is the account of Rivers's anguished search for understanding and purpose.
Morris evokes with deft intelligence the colorful world of dog racing and the characters, human and canine, who inhabit it. But this is merely a background for the travails of Luke and his little family, the cheap motels and dusty dreams, the tensions between Luke's tender love for his son and his obsession with his betting "system." Luke's dilemmawhether to pursue Jenny or to continue his gambling lifeis complicated further by the presence of a beautiful, sympathetic woman he meets after Jenny leaves, by his painful memories of family tragedy and personal breakdowns, and by a seemingly miraculous winning streak at the track.
The Greyhound God is a powerful novel of self-discovery by a writer at the top of his form. Seldom in contemporary fiction has the troubled psyche of a compulsive gambler been examined with such empathy and insight, nor has the world of gambling been depicted with such dead-on clarity.
Customer Reviews:
I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.......2003-11-21
Couldn't resist the musical reference, as it's apt for this amazing novel. Look: there are plenty of books out there -- thousands, in fact -- that seem more concerned with exhibiting the subtleties of craft than actually affecting the emotions of the reader. The Greyhound God ain't that kind of book. It's beautifully written, deeply felt, quite funny, but without one whit of post-modern "irony." I've read the book three times and each time I found myself entering into the world of Luke Rivers, the loss of his family, the tragedy that spurs this loss, his journey across America, and his strange, wonderful canine obsession. The book is one of those rare accomplishments -- a journey of self-discovery that feels real and revelatory. Readers deserve this kind of compassion. Period.
A great literary work.......2003-10-27
For those who like literary novels, this is one of the best ones on the market right now. Great writing, great story by a talented new author. It's a novel that makes you think and makes you question. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and getting to know Luke Rivers. I can't wait till Keith Lee Morris comes out with another novel.

Great book by a new author. The Greyhound Gods vivid language creates a gripping story of the struggle for self-discovery by Luke Rivers,it's main character. Luke searches for meaningful answers in his world beset by huge questions. A real page-turner that will hold you to the end.

Book Description
Jean M. Auel’s enthralling Earth’s Children series has become a literary phenomenon, beloved by readers around the world. In a brilliant novel as vividly authentic and entertaining as those that came before, Jean M. Auel returns us to the earliest days of humankind and to the captivating adventures of the courageous woman called Ayla.
With her companion, Jondalar, Ayla sets out on her most dangerous and daring journey--away from the welcoming hearths of the Mammoth Hunters and into the unknown. Their odyssey spans a beautiful but sparsely populated and treacherous continent, the windswept grasslands of Ice Age Europe, casting the pair among strangers. Some will be intrigued by Ayla and Jondalar, with their many innovative skills, including the taming of wild horses and a wolf; others will avoid them, threatened by what they cannot understand; and some will threaten them. But Ayla, with no memory of her own people, and Jondalar, with a hunger to return to his, are impelled by their own deep drives to continue their trek across the spectacular heart of an unmapped world to find that place they can both call home.
Customer Reviews:
Intriguing but NOT for children.......2007-09-04
Awesome research of this time period. Description of daily life very vivid. Sexual content is NOT for children, though describes a unique view of family life. Ayla is one of my favorite women who can do anything!
A Snore so Far . . ........2007-04-04
Truthfully, I loved Clan of the Cave Bear and Valley of the Horses in this series. Each was exciting and informative without being tedious as Mammoth Hunters and Plains of Passage have become.
Mz Auel's descriptions have become so awful I cross my eyes and turn the page as quickly as possible. Mammoth Hunters was frustrating as Ayla and Jondolar (which we know will end up together anyways) have stupid insignificant arguments that cause them to break up and send Ayla into the arms of Ranec. I know this misunderstanding thing is a standard plot device to get things moving but really, is this suffering really neccessary for the reader?
Then Jondolar and Ayla get back together and go on this long painful Journey in Plains of Passage. The most interesting part is when they find any signs of other humans. Other than that it's all plants and animals and boring sex. I have never in my life skipped through love scenes but every sexual event in this book is repeated over and over until I never want to hear the words "well", "dip", and "manhood" in a sentence ever again. I'm not even halfway through and I'm ready to throw it in the trash. Good thing it was a present.
Could & Should have cut 250 pages .......2007-03-21
This story is as good as the others. Auel has me hooked on her enticing adventure stories. That being said, Jean Auel is at best a Harlequin author. Her overly repetitive writing style which includes event, tool, leather, clothing, weapon and sex descriptions is enough to make me pull my hair out (if I have to read how "having 'Pleasures' with Jondalar isn't like when Broud did it" one more time, I'm literally going to puke.)
But worse in this particular book is the landscape and vegetation descriptions.....they go waaaayyyyyyyyy beyond tedious. Just because an author does more historical research for a book certainly doesn't mean the reader wants the information. The draw of historical fiction is usually the author weaving fascinating factual events in with fictitious characters or vise-versa. The problem with archeological/anthropological and botanical historical fiction is that what is verifiable just isn't very captivating unless you happen to have a penchant for those subjects. Let's face it Jean, your fan base reads these books for fun and entertainment and if we happen to learn something about the history of the earth in the process....great. But it's the characters and story that draw us in not the details of your research.
I highly recommend skimming the pages of this book that have no quotation marks. You'll enjoy it a lot more.
good story, good reader.......2007-02-06
Continuation of Ayla's story is excellent and beautifully read. There are a couple of production problems in this 28-CD set where 30-second sections are repeated (better than leaving them out!). That sort of makes you do a double take. The story continues with Ayla and Jondalar's adventures and discoveries that are sometimes too convenient or implausible that all this happens in one lifetime to one couple, but is nevertheless fascinating. Some would probably prefer to skip the infinite detail of the landscape, flora and fauna. Some might find the sexual encounters a little "gratuitous" after the first few. But I like it all. I listen during my work commute and this pair have kept me company for a couple months now. It's like a visit with friends every morning and evening. I read the first 4 books in the 80's and 90's, but decided I would "review" before getting into the 5th that has been out fewer years. Listening to books on CD is a new treat for me, so I chose to do it that way once I determined that I enjoyed Sandra Burr's reading. She has a remarkable ability with different voices, a skill that seems to improve as the volumes have progressed.
This is a really great book!!!!.......2006-08-30
Wow!...These other reviews are a bit harsh. Although many of their criticisms are valid, they are incredibly exadurated. This book did sometimes vear into overly long descriptive tangents and have a few repetetive sex scenes. However, as someone who is interested in prehistoric archaeology, I must say that this book and the other four in the series were a joy to read. I can't wait for the next one!... What is remarkable about the Plains of Passage is the development of the themes that underlie the series. Auel manages to inorporate lots of ideas about prehistoric people that push me to question why our society holds our ancient ancestors in such low regard. People frequently assume that because there is no definitive evidence for an advanced prehistoic culture that one must not have existed. In reality, there could have been many dark ages where knowledge was lost in the past...the advanced building techniques used to construct the ancient Egyptian pyramids point to a more advanced prehistory and losses of knowledge rather than theories about atlantis. Anyway, if Auel can inspire me to think so indepthly about these things while reviewing the flora and fauna of the upper paleolithic, creating unique cultural structures, developing the romance between Ayla and Jondalar, and telling a good story I am impressed. It is also interesting to hear someone's theories about the way things were made and done in the past. This book is especially fun for archaeology majors on summer vacation!!

Good Book, but too expensive.......2004-06-14
I finished reading this book and found it to be very entertaining. The story flows well and it is obvious the author knows her tactics and military terminolgy. The story is engrossing and kept my interest. The biggest turn off is the price. The book is not a hardcover yet it is very expensive. It is way too pricey for a soft cover.
A New Star in the Techno-Thriller Galaxy.......2000-08-06
In the arcane realm of the techno-thriller there are but a few leading lights. The names of Tom Clancy, Larry Bond and Dale Brown are familiar to aficionados of this genre. Let me introduce a new one: MacDonald Reid.
Reid's first novel, JIHAD: World War in 2036, follows the tried and true formula established by Clancy and Bond in their epic, Red Storm Rising. It's big (over six pages), has many maps, a glossary and a plethora of characters. The action shifts rapidly and dramatically. Its military situations and tactics are realistic, and its technological innovations are superb. However, it's not the formula that makes JIHAD a ripping yarn, it's the writing. MacDonald Reid is a gifted storyteller.
Jihad is the story of war in the Middle East and North Africa. It is a brutal yet poignant story. Reid's major characters are strongly presented. First Sergeant Al Murphy is the archetypal John Wayne ... bold and fearless, yet fatherly. General Tavid Hammedyanni is so slimy that you will cheer when he gets his due. Major David Weissman is a citizen-soldier, forced by circumstance into greatness. Commander Tafid Kamsanni is converted by battle and death from zealot to patriot. The words of Lt. Commander Muriel MacDonald will captivate and inspire every American, while her death will cause you to weep with Commander Dominic Russi. And then there is Rachel....
Jihad is also a story of hope. Although there is an inkling of problems in the future (a hint of a sequel?), Jihad ends on an upbeat note. New ideas and new concepts emerge from the horrors of holocaust. A new era dawns, bearing with it the promises of peace and prosperity for all Mankind.
Even if you're not "into" techno-thrillers, I recommend Jihad by MacDonald Reid. If you are, you'll love it.
The most entertaining seven bucks I've spent in decades.......1998-02-28
Gary Krupka, Educator & Business Consultant: Jihad is the most entertaining seven bucks I've spent in decades! The logical premises are right out of today's newspapers. The political situations and their consequences are all too real. The military strategy is superb. The results are logical and compelling. It's a great story!
Reid did everything right........1998-02-28
Holly Trueblood, Senior Executive & Author: The scope of Jihad by MacDonald Reid is huge. The characters are clearly defined and interesting. The political, social and military interactions are wonderfully complex, leading to unexpected yet, in hindsight, obvious consequences. There's plenty of technical detail, fulfilling the reader's need for information on the hows and whys, yet never getting in the way of the story. Filled with unexpected humor, Jihad is a thriller packed with meat, not just techno-thriller. For a first time author, Reid did everything right.
The first fictional work I really liked........1998-02-28
John Pasakarnis, Engineer: It was all I could do to put Jihad down once I started reading it. As I progressed thru the story I was torn between needing to know what was going to happen and regretting how fast I was going thru the book. I look forward to your future works. PS. I have always enjoyed non-fictional historical books, but this is the first fictional work that I really liked. I look forward to reading this one again - soon!

Book Description
A revised and expanded edition of a classic volume by one of the giants in his field, Raimon Panikkar, this significant volume discusses faith and belief in multireligious experience, with emphasis on understanding one's own religion and tradition before attempting to understand someone else's.
Panikkar begins by pointing out the prevailing attitudes and critical models for attaining a pluralism standing "between unrelated plurality and a monolithic unity." For the author this is a pluralism which "takes our factual situation as real and affirms that in the actual polarities of our human experience we find our real being." He describes an intrareligious dialogue in which faith is not confused with belief, in which religious encounter must be a truly religious one, and in which the participants overcome temptation to defend themselves.
The major religions of the world and particularly the Christian, Hindu and Buddhist traditions are seen as the response to the human predicament, "that Man is a being not yet finished, a reality unachieved, growing, becoming, on the way, a pilgrim." It means for each person to "touch the shore of nothingness provided he does not rest in that non-existing place. It means to develop all the human potentialities, provided these are not artificially concocted dreams. It means finally to know and accept the human predicament and, at the same time, to recognize that this very human predicament carries with it the constant overcoming of all that Man is now."

Zanesville Stoneware Company: Identification & Value Guide
ASIN: 0764311492 |
Book Description
This comprehensive study combines a fantastic historical account with exciting, newly-discovered examples. Art pottery and tiles from the Weller, Roseville, J.B. Owens, and related companies were made variously from 1872 to 1967 in Zanesville, Ohio. The authors studied many private collections to find fresh designs and shapes in this highly popular collecting field. This reference provides in one volume a full account of the companies, shapes, glaze lines, and values on today's market.
Customer Reviews:
Not A Good Choice, Buy The Bomm Roseville, or Huxford Weller.......2001-07-31
The book was well conceived, but poorly executed. The idea of covering all of the Zanesville art pottery makers within one text is definitely a good one, but the success stops with the concept. There are much better choices for each of the individual liines, with the Bomm & Huxford Roseville books much better, and the Huxford Weller more complete in spite of it's perceived 'datedness'. The photography from some dated price guides is used and the color reproduction on these is poor. The few original photographs are well done, but there are very few of these. The Roseville lines are not separated, so using the volume as a reference is impossible. In fact, the Roseville section is nothing more than a reproduction of the old Purviance price guide, and the mis-information in that guide is sometimes reproduced here. The Weller section is done the same way, but at least there are a few new photographs in that section. If this is an example of how future Schiffer books are to be published, then they just lost a long time good customer. Surely they could have done better with a subject matter so wide and complete. Your money is better spent elsewhere. JK

Book Description
Home is more than a simple shelter; home is a sanctuary. Sophisticated Surfaces illustrates how to enhance simple shelters by applying paint imaginatively to create aesthetically pleasing home environments. Rooted in traditions that date to the Italian Renaissance in seventeenth-century Europe, decorative artists use contemporary tools and materials to interpret age-old techniquesmarbleizing, graining, and glazing furniture, walls, and ceilings. Inspired by early masters, these same artists go on to create new finishescracked linens and textured wall surfaces among them.
This book is divided into three categories: Faux Finishes, Painted Furniture, and Murals. Each section focuses on works by decorative artists who excel in translating precisely executed techniques into exquisitely painted surfaces. Beauty and harmony are vital to our psychological health and well-being. Sophisticated Surfaces is designed to inspire readers to view ordinary living space in new, innovative, and creative ways.
Customer Reviews:
Kinda Boring!.......2005-08-22
Unfortunately I wasn't very impressed with the artwork. Out of all of the featured artists maybe two actually impressed me. Not that the others weren't talented (the artists themselves probably are, just the artwork they chose to feature was plain and ordinary). If you're looking for something to go wow over I suggest The Art Of Trompe L'oeil Murals by Yves Lanthier or The Painted House by Graham Rust.
Artistic Finishes LLC of Milwaukee recommendation.......2004-10-29
Interesting suggestions for a variety of wall and object painting techniques. Easy to follow steps using paint & plasters for the beginner to the experienced faux finisher.
Excellent idea book and great for Professionals.......2001-12-05
This is NOT a step-by-step or "how to" book, which is part of it's charm. This is definately written for the professional decorator or painter, but the beautiful finishes can be appreciated by the novice too. Excellent read and great coffee table book in one.
Wonderful interior design "coffee table" book.......2001-09-05
This is a great idea book for anyone interested in home décor or interior design. It also makes a great "coffee table" art book for anyone who appreciates fine decorative painting. It features a variety of surfaces created by eighteen different artists.
The book is divided into three sections: faux and fantasy, painted surfaces, and murals and Trompe l'oeil. Each artist has a gallery showing numerous photos of their work as well as a brief biography and description of their techniques. Captions contain information on how each individual example was created.
I loved a whimsical little girl's room painted from floor to ceiling with pastels by John Parsons. All the furniture by Fischer is just awesome. My favorite was an iridescent pastel chair with a woman's face on it. I enjoyed the bathroom where Entner achieves an awesome texture by using visible brushstrokes and a goldfish pond floorcloth by Dale Wade. I was also very impressed with the Drywall columns painted to look like Italian marble and a garden like octagonal room with lattice work up the walls.
Although most of us may not be able to emulate the artistic skill displayed in this book, it is still a great source of ideas and inspiration for anyone interested in incorporating decorative painting into their décor. There is contact information included for all of the artists and photographers represented. I know I will use ideas from this in my own home.
Trompe l'oeil and Faux at it's finest !.......2000-01-09
This book provieds beautiful pictures of some of the finest faux and trompe l'oeil finishes I have ever seen. However this book is NOT a step-by-step guide for the do it your selfer. I would however highly recommend this book to any Decorative artist looking for new ideas.
