Like the narrator of her novel The Land of Green Plums, Herta Muller grew up a German minority in Ceausescu's Romania, which she eventually left to settle in Germany. Her own experience lends credibility to the voice of her young narrator, who inhabits a deprived police state in which minorities such as the ethnic Germans suffer persecution beyond the quotidian oppressions of Ceausescu's regime. The title refers to the young woman's observations of the swaggering policemen who wolf down plums from the city trees, even while they're still green; the act serves as a symbol of greed, arbitrary power, and stupidity. Although an element of the story is survival, achieved by clinging to the German culture and language, the novel also confronts the older characters' sympathy with the Nazis. Nevertheless, Muller's fictional heroine finds salvation, as she herself did, in modern Germany.

5 out of 5 stars how better it would be if i read it in original language..........2002-06-11

this book is about some youngsters' dream of life and their disappointment. especially about friendship, the book gives us a harsh reality of what it is to grow up. those friends who experienced tragic death of their common friend, find it almost impossible to be free from the frustration after all. they are not only haunted by the intruding force of authority but also by their own past. the stories of their families are just too forceful.
also, i think the narrative style which is tossed by thoses quotes (he said, she said, ... said, etc.) not to mention, through those letters written by various characters, is fantastic. i can imagine, in original german language, it would be a lot better to be read, with the reportage-like nuance of verb endings of indirect quotation.
very eccentric and exciting novel!

5 out of 5 stars powerful, emotional and cruel novel.......2002-04-04

Be prepared to be surprised. You probably havent read anything like this before. It is very interestingly written, more like a poetry. But its not a book for everyone, its not an easy reading, where you can send your mind somewhere else. You have to be there completely. All your senses, emotions etc. This is like The Little Prince - but for adults. Herta Muller is telling us a story about living under dictatorship, halfman, halfanimal being, trying to forget about all the hopes and desires we share as humans forming a society. If you reach for the beauty, difference or something simple as love, you are condemned. Not all of us have experienced communism in this way (I am a bit too young), but this is a personal declaration about violation of human rights, being stabbed in the back, betrayed, left alone, dissapointed. Sadly, many of the things, described in this book, are true events. The book fokuses on the group of friends, that have met each other attending university. They soon reach and cross the boundaries of allowed thinking... But dont just give up if you think this is just too sad to read! It offers you a great thinking material you shouldnt avoid! It opens your horizons, sharpens your emotions. Even if you are a rock - do prepare a handkerchief for a tear or two. A book you can give to someone special in your life as a symbol of your friendship.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful... Astonishing.......1998-05-21

This novel is one of the most powerful ones I have ever read. The author has a wonderful way of making us feel for the characters, and it is written in such a compassionate and moving way. This is right up there on my list of great books along with Byatt's Possession and another book that reminded me of this one: The God of Small Things.

    Book Description

Before the Civil War, there lived in Louisiana, people unique in Southern history. For though they were descended from African slaves, they were also descended from the French and Spanish who enslaved them. In this dazzling historical novel, Anne Rice chronicles four of these so-called Free People of Color--men and women caught periolously between the worlds of master and slave, privilege and oppression, passion and pain.
"Anne Rice seems to be at home everywhere....She makes us believe everything she sees."

2 out of 5 stars Very hard to get into.......2007-08-22

I tried to like this book, I really did, but try as I might, I could not fall in love with it, even a little. I dont know what it was, but it was almost torture to read it. I found it disinteresting and quite boring at times. I found myseld losing track of who did what and which character was which. I usually dont have that issue when reading anything. I was truly dissapointed as I love Anne, she is my favorie author. I breathed a great sigh of relief after finishing it because it felt like I had just ran a marathon and was tired and out of breath after. And not in a good way. The last few chapters were much more interesting but it was not enough to redeam this mess of a book.

5 out of 5 stars THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS.......2007-07-25

As a native of New Orleans I'd often heard stories told about these free people of color, but until I read Anne Rice's THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS, I never knew much about them. This book was so interesting that I've read it twice over the past twelve years since I first heard about it. Each time I've read it I enjoyed in more than the first time. This is the first and only book of Anne Rice I've read. I'm not into vampires, but I plan to read her most recent book about Jesus.

    2 out of 5 stars Nice background - but a slow-turner.......2007-06-26

I usually have patience when it comes to reading works that require more effort than your average bestseller, but this was really pushing it. I read "Interview with a Vampire" which was a great mood piece. Anne Rice's use of description in that case really fit the story and made me enjoy the darker aspects of 19th century New Orleans and Paris. In this novel, Anne Rice's use of description really made the work seem bloated. It kept getting to the point where I was wondering when she would get the the real meat of the plot (if there was one). Her characters were interesting, especially Marcel, Anna Bella, Christophe, and his mother Juliet. But most activities involving these characters are interrupted by descriptive paragraphs on every flicker of emotion or curve of woodwork. I saw a TV movie based on the novel, which is what peaked my interest, but the writing style Rice used was more annoyingly descriptive than I expected. The stream-of-consciousness in the novel also made reading it difficult. I've read a few shorter novels using that style of writing, like "Mrs. Dalloway" , but in this novel of a little over 600 pages, it really tested my patience. This book could have really benefited from some considerate editing. If you're interested in the subject of the gens de colour of New Orleans (and willing to display more patience than I could gather)then you could check this out. This for me was disappointing considering how accomplished "Interview with the Vampire" was.

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book!.......2007-02-20

If you like historical fiction, you will definitely like this book. I was so fascinated with the historical context, I researched it further and found the book very accurate in its details of a little-known "society" that existed pre-Civil War. You can Google New Orleans People of Color to find historical information. I have not read Anne Rice, since I'm not interested in her usual topics, so am not familiar with her writing style, however, she kept my attention with this book. I couldn't put it down. I read a lot, and it is one of my all-time favorite books.
I rented the movie, which was a disappointment, as usual, but it gave me a visual impression of the characters and places.

5 out of 5 stars quick view of the novel.......2007-01-24

I can only say that Anne Rice's novels are getting less as she goes on. Not that the quality of her books following this one are subpar, to say the least, they are all fantastic narritives. I only mean that The Feast of All Saints is by far her best writing to date and in fact one of the ten best books I have ever read. The book far surpasses anything I could have expected. As an avid Rice fan and a lover of the Mayfairs and her Vampires I must still say this novel is the epitomy of everything I love about her.

    Book Description

"A handsome addition to the recent literature on this Mexican phenomenon.... The photographs are magnificent.... This volume makes a valuable contribution to the study of both Mexican popular culture and the folk art it has produced. It may also be timely, as one of the interviewees laments the way U.S. Halloween customs are supplanting some of the traditional celebrations in urban centers such as Monterrey and the Federal District."

    —Hispanic American Historical Review

All over Mexico, early in November, families gather to welcome the souls of the dead on their annual visit home. The smells of burning copal incense and pungent cempasúchil (marigolds) mingle with the aromas of fresh bread, new clothing, sweets, and candles. One of Mexico's most important festivals since prehispanic times, the Day of the Dead is an occasion for celebrating and feasting, cleaning and decorating graves, dancing and making music.

In this unique work, the authors explore both the historic origins of this holiday and its colorful present-day celebrations in Mexico and the United States. Interviews with Mexican artists and crafters who provide goods for the festival—from personalized sugar skulls to gigantic papier-mâché skeletons—offer a fascinating glimpse into traditional and contemporary attitudes toward death and the dead.

Lavishly illustrated with color and black-and-white photographs, The Skeleton at the Feast will be required reading for all who are interested in Mexican culture, art, and folklore.

I bought this book several years ago at the Museum of Mankind, in London. It was the book for the exhibition, which featured incredible paper sculptures of skeletons and demons.
I read every word of the book, and enjoyed the culture, history, and personal stories of these Mexican artists.

    5 out of 5 stars a comprehensive look at a bizarre custom.......2000-04-05

As an anthropologist who teaches classes on Mexico, I use this book often. The "day of the dead" in Mexico exemplifies, for me, the difference between the U.S. culture and that of Mexico. Just as other cultures might find our U.S. Halloween celebrations strangely at odds with normally conservative Judeo-Christian religious observance, this book illustrates clearly the almost unfathomable blending of pre-Columbian cults of death and sacrifice with Spanish-Catholic traditions. Starting with its origins in Mexico's ancient civilizations, the book discusses and illustrates this observance through modern times, and takes the reader vicariously to the areas of Mexico in which it is most enthusiastically observed. Sit down with a cup of chocolate' and some "pan de los muertos" (bread of the dead), and enjoy a book whose topic you might have thought too morbid for your taste, but which you will probably end up finding much more compelling than repulsive. Unfortunately for me (but better for the publishing company!), I am about to order my 3rd copy of "Skeleton at the Feast"--apparently the students to whom I loan it find it too interesting to return!

my favorite Anne Rice novel -- historical fiction that evokes New Orleans in the mid 1800's through the eyes of a mulatto boy coming to maturity in the French Quarter, son of an upriver white planter and a free woman of color. A portrait of the complex and little known Creole society that included scholars, artists, craftsmen, even opera singers, whose members enjoyed a strange status - able to own property, even slaves, but disenfranchised and relegated to subservience to even base whites. Fascinating! and complete in one tightly written volume!

5 out of 5 stars Best Summary of Mission History Ever Written!.......1999-02-06

                            Book Description

Red on Red celebrates the return of brilliant reds to the decorator's palette after an absence in favor of more minimalist shades. In her second book with Bulfinch, Stephanie Hoppen tackles the vivid range of variations from rich crimsons and purples, and warm oranges and terracottas through to spicy raspberrys, pinks, and fuchsias. Using individual color palettes, Hoppen shows how each can be used in interiors ranging from eclectic and rich to cool and modern.

                              Book Description

"Landscape imagery," according to Stephen Daniels, "is not merely a reflection of, or distraction from, more pressing social, economic, or political issues; it is often a powerful mode of knowledge and social engagement." As exemplars of moral order and aesthetic harmony, particular landscapes achieve the status of national icons, and imperialists, almost by definition, have annexed the homelands of others in their identity myths, projecting on "foreigners" pictorial codes that express both an affinity with the colonizing country and an estrangement from it. In this provocative book Daniels shows how various artists--including painters, landscape designers, and architects--have articulated national identities in England and the United States from the later eighteenth century to the present day. The author looks especially at those artists who have been the focus of a "heritage debate" and who have been featured in exhibitions in the last decade (such as the controversial "The West as America: Reinterpreting Images of the Frontier" at the National Museum of American Art). Analyzing works of Christopher Wren, John Constable, J.M.W. Turner, Thomas Cole, Humphry Repton, Joseph Wright, and Frances Palmer (the leading artist for Currier and Ives), Daniels also examines how landscape conventions developed in England were deployed in definitions of American national identity. The author denies that his intention is iconoclastic. Instead, he wishes to amplify the eloquence of the images he treats, even if this means rendering their meaning more mutable and ambiguous than their nationalist admirers might concede.
