Book Description

Her first novel, Jimmy's Girl, was "an assured debut" (Publishers Weekly) and "a perfect reminder of how strong first love can be" (Redbook). With The Puzzle Bark Tree, Stephanie Gertler returns with a new novel showing her mastery at conveying the passion and power of the human heart.

Grace Hammond Barnett grew up in the emotionally desolate company of her mother and father. Her only happy childhood memories are of times spent with her younger sister, Melanie, and Jemma, the family housekeeper who helped fill the void left by Grace's detached, inaccessible parents. Now a mother herself, Grace feels trapped in a sterile marriage to a prominent surgeon and haunted by recurrent dreams of drowning. Her only anchor is her cherished daughter, Kate.

In the aftermath of her parents' sudden double suicides -- a tragedy that leaves Grace, Melanie, and Jemma reeling -- Grace is bequeathed a house she never knew existed. Leaving her penthouse in Manhattan on New Year's Eve, she travels alone to Sabbath Landing, New York, to a log cabin house on Canterbury Island, surrounded by Diamond Lake. Here, Grace meets Luke Keegan, a local fishing guide whose family history is inextricably bound to hers . . . and to a devastating secret buried in the cloudy memory of childhood.

With compassion and elegance, Stephanie Gertler crafts an emotionally rich story of what it means to survive and thrive against all odds. Like its intricate, interlocking pieces that branch out to shape lives, The Puzzle Bark Tree plumbs the mysteries of the people we can never truly know . . . of the incomplete memories we carry with us, and the love that can make us whole.

4 out of 5 stars The puzzle bark tree.......2007-06-30

This book is full of mysteries and unspoken family secrets. It really made me guess what was going to happen next and question everything about the characters. I was completely surprised to find out the reason why the parents were so cold and indifferent with their kids. I didnt understand their strict ways and why the mother acted as if she was in a whole different world. The story definitely unravels and ties all the clues together in the end.

4 out of 5 stars Do You Read a Book for its Title?.......2003-07-30

Stephanie Gertler's title "The Puzzle Bark Tree" is symbolism but you'll have to read far into the book to find the metaphor in a tree trunk. However, the first paragraph of her prologue sets up an immediate cut-to-the-chase, a puzzle that demands solution, exactly what we readers want.

Gertler's pacing almost always races. You eagerly await the next chapter until you get to the middle of the book and, alas, the puzzle is solved. It's a letdown. You wonder why half the book remains to be read. You consider quitting, then something you never saw coming plummets, and your nose dives right back inside her book.

This novel is part mystery, psychological suspense and love story, essential ingredients of the proverbial good read. Three deaths are part of the mystery but it's not a whodunit; it's not a 'how'; it's a 'why'.

A married couple with grown children commit suicide on the same night. An enigmatic note, left unfinished, is found. Given the history of these two depressed and detached parents who literally turned over the raising of their two daughters to a live-in housekeeper, their tragic deaths, although not incredible, demands answers. What was the root cause that finally led them to give up? Unraveling one daughter's dreams provides answers.

Since her childhood, Grace Hammond, elder sister of Melanie suffered recurring dreams of drowning. As a married woman, Grace still cannot go near the water. Eventually, she realizes, the keys unlocking buried memories lay in her dreams. Her husband, renowned heart surgeon, demands she see a psychiatrist, but not because he believes it would help her; he's got no patience for such nonsense, he shouts at her. He's very good at repairing strangers' hearts, but excels at breaking his wife's.

Stephanie Gertler writes simply and easily in short chapters that glide you along page after page, then suddenly stop you with a 'wow' event you'll want to stop and digest.

Of course there's a happy ending. Your ride to it is by reckless roller coaster of steep hills to climb, low valleys to cruise. At the end of the ride, you move on, embracing the future and The Puzzle Bark Tree.

3 out of 5 stars Good story, but nothing new here........2002-12-05

This was an okay read, a good story, but no new ground in the plot. Grace is left an island that was owned by her parents after they committed suicide. No one in the family knew about this island, so its existence and the home that was there is somewhat of a mystery.

This story is about Grace and her sister's quest to discover why their parents were so troubled, cold and why they lost the will to live.

I liked the characters, but there was nothing original or new in this type of story. It was not compelling, but I did want to know how Grace would deal with her issues so I stuck it out to the end. Only a three star read.

4 out of 5 stars well written but story was lacking.......2002-11-28

The first part of this book is very fast paced and keeps you turning the pages to see what happened to Grace and Melissa's parents in the past to uncover why they committ suicide and why their lives were so empty. The secret is revealed mid~book but there really isn't more and I was alittle disappointed.

Worth reading but realize you know the truth all at once and there isn't anything more to learn the rest of the book.

      Book Description

Amid the fire and chaos of the Civil War something inhuman was stalking the grim battlegrounds. A monstrous thing that was savaging the armed soldiers on both sides, North and South. Not even the dead were safe from the unkillable fiend who walked through volleys of thundering cannons without being harmed. Struggling to hold a divided nation together, a besieged President Lincoln reluctantly creates a secret organization to handle the hellish problem. Given the codename: Bureau 13, the new agency is assigned the nearly-impossible task of stopping the supernatural murders before the grotesque deaths become public knowledge creating the kind of national panic that could easily topple the already-weakened United States. Unfortunately, the Bureau had little money, few weapons, and no knowledge of the occult. Except for one man, J.P. Withers, the very first Bureau 13 agent...

Amid the fury and chaos of the Civil War, something monstrous is feeding upon the wounded soldiers, leaving behind withered corpses broken and twisted in unimaginable agony. Definitely not the work of a vampire. U.S. Marshall Joshua Withers is ordered by President Lincoln to stop the hideous deaths. Has the South unleashed a demon from Hell? But the marshall soon discovers that the mysterious enemy has been attacking every fallen soldier in the war, both Union and Confederate. President Jefferson Davis wants the unknown fiend stopped just as much as President Lincoln. Ruthlessly hunting a dark thing unafraid of guns, fire, silver, or Holy Water, the grim marshall starts to believe that the killer is not a werewolf, vampire, demon, or anything else known in the lexicon of the supernatural. This is something new, something horribly different. And the battlefield deaths are only the beginning...

      4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-31

If a werewolf attacks one of your military leaders, what do you do? Like all good butlers would, be of service and intervene with the tea tray! Innovation like this gets Joshua drafted as a US Marshal to look into the supernatural problem plaguing the Union army.

It goes further than he thinks, and the werewolves and just underlings to the Drell. After some more action, and another timely intervention, the President makes him a Special Agent of Bureau 13, with his whole purpose of employment now being to stop supernatural threats. He meets a Confederate agent named The Hammer with a similar task, and they team up to rescue a wizard and a Medusan, and destroy a base.

      5 out of 5 stars A Damned good read.......2007-03-02

If you've read my reviews you know I'm a fan of Mr. Pollotta. I'm also a fan of the Bureau 13 RPG by Richard Tucholka. That sad, is this great for non-Bureau 13 readers as many of my post-read new Bureau 13 fans can attest.

As for old timers and fans this book goes back to the origins of J.P. Withers and the earliest days of the Bureau. Civil War buffs will find the setting and characterizations spot on to some of the biggest personalities of the period.

Some steampunk, some horror, action and a splash of Army of Darkness style humor, and you've got yourself another winner and a Damned good book.

4 out of 5 stars Damned Nation, a rollicking good read.......2007-01-10

As a big fan of the game these books are based on, I was not disappointed. Once again Nick Pollata gave us a rollicking good story that was both entertaining and exciting. It featured several plot twists and surprises and even had a quick cameo by Team Tunafish, even though the American Civil War was 175 years before their time! I heartily endorse this latest chapter in the staro of B13 and recommend it to anyone who loves the game itself, or just likes a good adventure story.

      5 out of 5 stars A nice begining to a great series.......2006-10-29

I loved the Bureau 13 series. The action mixed with humor and horror is a welcome change to normal horror stories around. However, BUREAU 13:DAMNED NATION tops them all. This book combines history and horror plus social commentary of religion and the civil war. Now I ask where can you find all that in one book. It reads fast and it lays the ground work for the other novels. The way Lincoln came up with name of the organization is worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars "Let's go kill some boogums.".......2006-09-03

During the onset of the American Civil War, butler Joshua Witherspoon saves President Lincoln from an assassination attempt by a werewolf. As a reward, he is elevated to the rank of U.S. Marshall and commissioned by the President to follow up on the werewolf attack and to also investigate the rash of inexplicable deaths of both Union and Confederate soldiers, who seemed to be inflicted with minor, non-lethal wounds only.

Lest future enemies seek revenge on the new Marshall, Witherspoon changes his name to J.P. Withers. And now, Marshall Withers, woefully armed and lacking in arcane occult knowledge, must quickly catch himself up with mythology of the creatures of the night and achieve results lest malignant, mystical forces birth a truly damned nation. It's a good thing Withers is gifted with good common sense, as well as benefiting from a somewhat shady upbringing. J.P. Withers' discoveries and actions, in short time, lead the president to create a maverick department - answerable only to Abe Lincoln - to be in charge of all things occult. Withers is again promoted, this time to the rank of a United States Special Agent, given carte blanche and the power to command the military, answerable only to the President.

In the meantime, Withers must get used to his new status as he contends with werewolves, evil mirror twins, zombies, malevolent spells, a flying hell house, and the Drell, who are unstoppable, evil creatures equipped with four arms, three eyes, wiggling tendrils...and doctor's bags. On a less supernatural front, he also finds himself facing off against the more mundane criminals of the world. And jealous lieutenants.

After many years and with this new entry, Nick Pollotta finally writes a new Bureau 13 adventure - sort of. This time, he tells us of the genesis of Bureau 13 (named by Lincoln in honor of the 13 original colonies), and its inaugural member. It's true that, this time, Pollotta isn't as spoofy, as heavy handed with the puns and the broad humor (although there are groan-inducing hints of those here and there). This results in a more gripping novel with a higher sense of jeopardy for the lead character.

What also escalates the sense of drama is that Withers, a total amateur with no background at monster slaying, seems always to be a step behind and a hair's breadth away from getting his [...] handed to him. Also, unlike the present, vastly experienced Bureau 13 (shout out to Team Tunafish!), there aren't any proven procedures to fall back on. Withers has to constantly experiment with weaponry and other things (kosher salt, a crucifix, juju bags, silver...) to combat the various forms of beasties. And the level of technology at his disposal, of course, is 19th-century efficient (or deficient). So in the dark is the marshall that he finds himself consulting rabbis and circus fortune tellers. Fortunately for him, he comes across a fellow special agent (for the Confederates) to help him in his fight against the unholy creatures.

In this newest installment, Pollotta once again shows off his taut pacing, tight plotting, and his penchant for crazy beastie mayhem. In the final 50 pages, he takes the kid gloves off and treats the reader to an all-out, actionfest as Withers and his partner Logan descend into the pits of the hell house. One flaw I find with this book is the less than thorough proof-reading (tsk, tsk, Wildside Press). Not to be a grammarian or anything, but some of the obvious errors on page threw me off and momentarily bumped me out of the Bureau 13 universe. But, ultimately, the quality of Pollotta's work more than overcomes that. Anyway, I hope there's a sequel in the works for J.P. Withers, not to mention further books centering around Team Tunafish. This book, needless to say, is recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Grand Fantasy Adventure With A Heart And Soul.......2004-10-02

"Killobyte" wouldn't have to be anything more than what it's described as on the back - a near-future hyper-realistic virtual reality game where players can play almost any role, until a hacker brings into the game the possibility of real death to the players - and succeed marvelously as an exhilirating adventure story and prime fodder for any number of dreams and fantasies. But, being written by Piers Anthony, it also adds in some extra dimensions for even more reward.

First, the VR-adventure themes - players play 'online' with and against any number of other players (and bear in mind that this was written in 1993, when things like the Internet were still in their infancy), choosing from a vast array of scenarios - High Fantasy type with dragons and sorcerors and dashing knights and beautiful maidens; Science Fictional settings; 'real-life' political intrigue/military settings - just about anything you can think of - and select from a host of loosely-defined 'roles' within their scenario, then go on to custom-make the specific attributes of their character. Players can log in and out of their scenario and come back in inprogress, but if killed ingame must start a new character. For any fan of video games, adventure/fantasy movies, and the sexier possibilities in Virtual Reality role-playing, this guarantees a great novel provided it's written well, which this is.

But there's more - first of all, though it's evident that the majority of Killobyte-players are 'normal', reasonably well-adjusted people whose excursions into the VR world no more mean that they can't enjoy the real world, any more than people who watch a lot of movies or read a lot of books can't enjoy numerous other aspects of life; the two lead characters - Waler and Baal - are indeed hampered by limitations that severely hamper their ability to partake of the 'real' world. And their backstories are given, providing insight into and generating real empathy for the characters. Baal, for example (this isn't giving anything away, it comes up early in the book) is both severely diabetic and hypershy. This is one thing I love about Anthony's writing: like Stephen King and Dean Koontz he includes characters with physical and/or mental ailments as main parts of the cast - sometimes it's not a main point, just a 'just-happens-to-be' kind of thing; other times it's a significant part of the character. But even when it's significant in the character and the story, it's always made clear that the affliction (or disability or whatever you want to call it) is FAR from the sole characteristic that makes up the person. This is true of Koontz's and King's books as well.

Piers also frequently includes characters of different races, belief systems, ethnicities, and the other things that unfortunately tend to divide people, into his books. Here, for example, the Druze religion is briefly brought into things, an actual religion that I had never heard of before reading "Killobyte". As a species, humanity isn't doing as good a job as it could of the different peoples mingling and understanding and respecting one another in the real world. Perhaps greater exposure to different cultures, religions, etc., through things like books and movies is a place to start? (If you agree with that, I'd enthusiastically urge you to check out "The Veiled Web" by Catherine Asaro, an excellent book that has the very notions above as one of its two main themes, along with the emergence of genuine Artificial Intelligence)

There's one other thing about this that's a big drawing point - the Author Notes at the back. Years back I gave up reading most Author Notes and interviews and the like, and I Never watch the behind-the-scenes making-of features on DVDs, because I don't want to risk spoiling the magic of the story. At the time I ceased with the interviews and stuff, I decided there were a few sources who were 'safe' in this way, Anthony being one of them. His notes are always entertaining, enlightening, and never take away even a smidgen of the magic of his books

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Romp Through VR.......2003-12-08

This story is quite engaging and fun, and only one thing keeps it from getting a five: the seeming arbitrariness of the danger that the players of the VR game face. One player goes into diabetic shock while the other has a coincidental pacemaker problem that makes it possible for a game-death to kill him.

Other than that difficulty, it is entertaining and a fun story. No real issues of great import are ever discussed in the novel, but it is a book for fun, not for serious contemplation. The three main characters are interesting, though, and they do have a fun story, even if it isn't terribly compelling.

Walter is an emotionally scarred ex-policeman who was assaulted by a vicious wife-beater (who should have died, quite frankly), and who is seeking escape in virtual reality. Baal is an emotionally scarred teenage girl who was diagnosed with diabetes and who has a tragedy-fraught romantic life. She wants to find out what dying is like, and thinks that VR is the best way to find out before she finally commits.

Their story is interesting and believable, and the action carries it through the parts that don't make as much sense and where characterization fails a bit, but it makes a fun, cohesive whole.

It's not a brain-bender by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a very fun read that I recommend. Read it and enjoy it, use it as a way of escaping the world for a little while.

3 out of 5 stars A video game cant hurt you, can it?.......2002-08-24

Killobyte is the newest virtual game to hit the market. Players lock themselves into a chair equiped with sensors and a visor and enter a world of imagination. Here we meet Walter Toland, a wheelchair bound ex cop, and Baal Curan, a diabetic young woman. The two enter the game expecting an escape from thier lonely existence, but this escape may cost them thier lives.

Killobyte is the first Anthony book i ever read. I had heard from friends he was the god of fantasy. As I discovered he is far from a god but some of his books are a good read, Killobyte being one of them. The book is slow at times but fast enough to hold your interest. The characters are likeable and the plot is semi believable. Anthony has a tendency to write for a young male audience and this can become annoying. Despite this drawback I recommend Killobyte for the casual fantasy/sci-fi reader.

5 out of 5 stars Quick, easy, enjoyable.......2000-09-05

Having avoided Piers Anthony since junior high school (16 years or so ago), I was first exposed to him through Killobyte. As a graphics programmer, this book is awful and very, very, very wrong. As a fiction reader, though, this book is complete, well written, and a delight to sit and pour through.

Killobyte's characters, Walter, Baal, and Phreak, are perfectly described, their actions, their pasts...they all seem congruous and well-thought. The action is quickly paced and often funny. Fans of computer gaming will find it especially enjoyable to be immersed in this fantasy world of gaming, even one that is so very unlikely. You will read this book at one sitting, and end up wanting more, guaranteed.

      4 out of 5 stars "Killobyte" Kills.......2000-07-15

Firstly, this is not my favorite book genre. However, on advice from a friend I surprisingly enjoyed "Killobyte".

Piers Anthony gives us an intriguing concept of virtual reality in "game form". We meet heroic Walter Toland, an ex-policeman, now forced to be wheelchair bound. And Baal Curran, an introspective High Schol senior, who has retreated into a world of her own.

Playing "Killobyte" brings them together on a journey of understanding and victory.

      A complete, well written story.

      Thanks--CDS

              Book Description

Toy action figures are tremendously popular collectibles, and many collectors argue that Mego is the premier maker. Super Heroes from comics, television and movie stories were made with interchangeable clothes, equipment and vehicles. In this new third edition of a classic collector's guide, all of these figures are shown with their original packaging in over 400 color photos, with newly updated values. Batman*r, Superman*r, Spiderman*r, Wonder Woman*r, Hulk*r, and the characters from Star Trek*r, The Dukes of Hazzard*r, The Wizard of Oz*r, Planet of the Apes*r, The Black Hole*r, Buck Rogers*r, Flash Gordon*r, and many more are included. Prototypes, never produced figures, and foreign exclusives join the regular production in this fun-filled reference.

4 out of 5 stars A very good, almost great, book........2003-04-05

I enjoyed this book quite a bit (couldn't put it down until I read it cover to cover as a mater of fact). It provides a lot of useful information, and I would consider this book a MUST for any Mego collector (though I'm not sure the latest edition is necessary). If I could make one change to this book, I would make it more of an "action figure archive" or "reference guide" and less of a price guide. It would have been very useful if the book spent more time telling us everything about each figure, including variations and accessories (kind of like the Mego Museum does), that would have made this a GREAT book. Also, this book seems to slight the WGSH figures a bit (i.e., not as much information or pictures about them as about the other figures). Don't get me wrong, I still found this book to be very useful and well worth the money (i.e., it did a lot of what I hoped, just not everything). In short, knowing what I know now, I still still buy this book, and I would encourage anyone interested in Mego figures to do the same.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book for All Action Figure Collectors!.......2002-02-03

If you are into Mego this is the book for you! Between this full color book and the authors toy collection web site (listed in the book at WWW.MEGOHEADTOYS.COM) the world of Mego is 100% covered! A must have especially if you are into Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, The Wizard of Oz and Super Heroes!

5 out of 5 stars The "Wish Book" I never had as a kid........2001-12-14

When I opened up this book, it spoke to me. It said "This book is for you." I took one look at it and suddenly my childhood came flooding back all over again. Back to when Christmas was magical and there were two mego boxes waiting for me under the tree. By far, this is the most comprehensive mego book on the market. Trust me, I've bought them all. The day this book arrived in the mail changed my life. No serious mego collector should be without one. Use it as a personal checklist, or as a book to remind you of when toys were "cool". Not only does it have all the toys I remembered, but everything I always hoped would have made. Crammed full of an entire museum worth of mego toys, this book has everything from foreign exclusives to unproduced prototypes and production artwork. All the informative stories within are just priceless. I dare anyone to find a more comprehensive mego guide anywhere. There just isn't anything that compares to it. I only wish it could be longer. I just couldn't get enough. If it could be twice the size, I would gladly pay whatever price necessary. This is the book I see people using at all the toy shows. All over the world, this is the book Mego collectors and sellers use. Every up to date Mego discovery is there. When I think Mego, John Bonavita is the man. I have bought every edition and John has never let me down. There's always something amazing. All I can say is keep it coming! I hope Schiffer goes into FOURTH printing, just so I can see what new discoveries John has turned up! Go get'em John, "COLLECT'EM ALL!"

              1 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2000-06-29

Here is the second edition of John Bonavita's Mego action figure guide. The book's cover, which was questionably plain in the first edition, is repeated here with a different background color. This new guide is supposed to be revised and updated, but the only thing I see different are the enormously inflated values on many of these figures. I can count a handful of pictures that are actually new to this edition. I was looking forward to this book as I am an avid Mego collector, but I cannot express to you how disappointed I was in this revised edition. Everything is virtually the same. Some figures are curiously overpriced. (Example: a prototype that is valued at 6000.00, yet it is the only one and has never been sold - where does that value come from?)If you have the first edition of this book, it is enough for you to have some good reference, but this second edition is a total waste of money.

              5 out of 5 stars A Better Mego Book.......2000-03-31

This new version of the Mego Bible is quite the upgrade. Better pictures, more up to date prices & information new to even the heaviest Mego collector. Even if you have the old book, get the new one. All your Megos will thank you.

              4 out of 5 stars Mego Toys.......2004-01-03

This book has alot of detailed color photos and is a good quick reference book to walk around with at flea markets, toy shows and garage sales. Its a great book for new collectors and dealers. The book has color photos of most but not all of Mego's action figures and dolls that Mego made. But i found that the book was worth the money.

2 out of 5 stars Not the Best out there.......2002-11-28

A very early book, it could have prospered from more research and a better selection of photos.

Most of the shots are from Mego catalogs themselves which doesn't give you an idea of packaging.

But, if you're just getting into the hobby then it's not a bad starting point either.

2 out of 5 stars Has some nice pictures, lacks content........1999-04-13

I didn't enjoy this book as much as Mego Action Figure Toys with Prices by John Bonavita. I bought this book thinking that it would have some larger pictures of the little mego guys. It did but there aren't that many pictures or conttent

Inglehart is undoubtedly THE go-to expert on social value changes and shifts in industrial society. Through his work with the World Values Survey, he has made significant contributions to social science. This book is a great introduction to his body of work and summarizes nicely the patterns human behaviors have formed over the decades. Building on his earlier work, Inglehart finds significant shifts away from survivalism towards social postmodernism in industrial societies of the post-WWII era. He shows the links between such postmodernism and social movements in a characteristically scientific way throughout the book. It's a bit heady and not exactly a "fun" read, but quite accurate, and worth careful consideration. I would recommend this to anyone doing research in the social science field, advanced undergraduates, or even a layperson looking to gain greater understanding of the human family's behavior over the last decades. If you're wondering why we have the society that we do, this is the right resource with which to explore such a question. Once you read this, you'll also want to pick up Modernization and Postmodernization, Inglehart's 1997 book that is a bit more in-depth. As a political science graduate student researching social movements, Inglehart's work has been invaluable to just about every lit review I've written. If you're only looking at this because it's on a requirement list for a class, thank your teacher for making you read this.
