"In 1920s New Orleans, Raziela Nolan is in the throes of a magnificent love affair when she dies suddenly in an accident. Immediately after her death, she gets caught in the between--a brilliantly imagined realm that exists between life and death and the beyond. From this remarkable vantage point, Razi narrates the story of her lost love as well as the intricate story of Amy and Scott, a young couple whose house she haunts seventy years later. But it is the trials of this young couple and their serendipitous connection to Razi that finally compel her to unravel the mystery of what happened to her first and only love, Andrew. The Mercy of Thin Air is an extremely well-crafted puzzle of a novel that pieces together two tragic and redemptive love stories that parallel and collide over two different periods in history, finally culminating in a startling finish that will leave readers breathless. It is rich with characters that emerge seamlessly from eras in which they live. From plucky, forward thinking Razi, who illegally slips contraception education pamphlets into books; to hip web designer Amy who begins to fall off the edge of grief; to Eugenia caught in the between since The War Between the States, the characters in this ambitious and original debut sing with life, as well as Southern flair. The Mercy of Thin Air is a poignant and intelligent first novel that beautifully captures the nature of love and how it transcends all barriers--even death."

Very Interesting Story.......2007-10-08
I really enjoyed this book! The characters are easy to like and I was completely engrossed in the plot about how loves endures even after death. Some twists and turns make the story interesting and I loved reading about the author's perspective on the after-life. The book stirred real emotions and I found myself reaching for the tissue box on multiple occasions. Very entertaining and highly enjoyable!
'Testing the boundaries of time, grief and death'.......2007-09-08
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The combination of the past, the present and the 'in between' introduced some fascinating possibilities into the lives of the characters.
There are some interesting twists and turns as Raziela Nolan (Razi) seeks to follow the life of her beau (Andrew O'Connell) subsequent to her untimely death in the 1920s. As part of her journey of discovery, Razi becomes involved in the lives of Amy and Scott some 70 years after her own death.
This is a novel about love, understanding and compromise which tests the boundaries of time, grief and death. In this, her first novel, Ms Domingue has provided a splendid novel to be read and revisited.
Highly recommended.

Mystical, but the air maybe a tad too thin.......2007-09-02
After your demise imagine hanging around 'between' able to observe and even interact on a ghostly plane with those you knew in life. The book is beautifully written- an amazing first novel. A 4 because though some of the main characters such as Raziela were well drawn, others just didn't speak to me. There didn't seem strong enough foundation for the serious problem that seemed to just crop up between Scott and Amy, or for the resolution of same. I will say that Ms. Domingue can write great love scenes when so many authors fail with love scenes that are just icky or ridiculous. Ms. Domingue has written a truly unique ghost story. This book should be on best book lists.
A romance novel...without the BLECH........2007-08-29
Once in a while, a book will choose me to read it. I happened to pick this up on a bargain table for 4 dollars and figured that even if I didn't like it, it was still only 4 dollars.
Best damn 4 dollars I ever spent.
Ronlyn Domingue's debut novel is magical and hypnotic. There is just no other way to describe it. Raziela Nolan is a unique and powerful protagonist, her voice becoming warm and familiar after the second page. The characters become your friends, relatives, brothers, and sisters. You laugh with them, cry with them, bleed with them, and worry about them as if they were right beside you. Domingue's mind-blowing descriptions and poetic prose put you within the action, feeling and seeing with the characters. The parallels within the story, along with the shift between the past and the present, keep the reader engaged and curious, hopelessly attached to the book until the punctuation of the last sentence. The ending will leave you breathless, grasping your chest in awe and sorrow, grateful for having had the experience but longing for more.
Just as Razi will never forget Andrew, or a single solitary moment of her breathing life, I will never forget a single page of this beautiful, expertly crafted work of literature. Read it, I promise it will change your life.
One of the best books I've read all year!.......2007-08-16
I loved this book, set in the 1920's and present day America, it had everything I love in a good book: romance, heart ache, loss, passion, adventure, and history.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
In the third of Ed Brubaker's Catwoman trades, she continues on her merry way, and is still straddling the line between crime and crimefighting. She will rescue people from the police, and also hand hoods over to them. A bit of larceny for a good cause is not beyond her, either. However, when some unfans of hers come looking for a violent resolution, she has more than the normal number of problems.
Women need to read Brubaker's CATWOMAN!.......2005-06-21
I know comics aren't big among grown women, but having been a catwoman fan from the days of Eartha Kit, I happened to pick up Brubaker's Catwoman and have now read all three volumes. He is a powerful writer and I haven't seen strong women and female bonding like this since Xena. The hero/villain on a quest for redemtion is a strong theme in this one. She has a lot of pain and just as much love, which makes this story even more gut-wrenching.
Ed Brubaker is the best.......2005-03-26
Ed Brubaker needs more recognition for his work on the Catwoman series. This TPB is a perfect example of his unique style, classic noir with a modern twist. The writing is concise, not overly wordy. He knows how to craft a great crime story.
Brubaker and Stewart's depiction of Catwoman/Selina Kyle is spot-on. Sexy, tough, and elegant all at the same time. I like the new direction of "is she a villain or hero?" This leads to many more great questions for the character.
Unfortunately, Brubaker is leaving DC to go to Marvel exclusively. This is #3 of his Catwoman TPB run. Pick up #1 and #2. They are a joy to read.
Not your typical cat story.......2005-02-05
Catwoman has always had an edge about her, an edge tempered with a cat's playful sensuality. Here, she completes a transition begun a while back in the storyline, losing a lot of the playfullness, and becomes a full fledged predator of the night. There's no innocence lost here, just a hard hitting story that takes Selina Kyle from the heights of dreams realized, to the nightmare of Gotham's East End. It's a gripping story and, as you'ld expect from him, Brubaker pulls no punches in the telling of it. Once you read it you'll never be able to look at "the cat" in the same way again. Oh yeah, buy this book!
Book Description
The Dreel was a hive-mind, composed of trillions upon trillions of virus-sized units, which infected intelligent beings like a disease and took over the mind of an occupied being, utterly. It had occupied planets throughout the galaxy, making their entire population its mind-slaves, and was on its way to conquering the entire galaxy-until a cop on the frontier planet of Parkatin discovered the truth. Those whose minds were still free fought back, using a weapon so powerful that it wrought havoc with the control of the Well World, the ancient planet-sized supercomputer that a vanished super-race called the Markovians built to recreate the entire universe, and maintain it in its present form. If the Well World's control of time and space could not be restored, the universe could vanish like a blown-out candle flame. Only a Markovian could go to the Well World and repair the damage, but only one Markovian was still known to survive. He had last been seen in human form, going by the name of Nathan Brazil. No one knew where he was now, what name he was using, or even if he still appeared human. Finding him, somewhere in the immensity of the galaxy, seemed an impossible task. So the task fell to someone who had done the impossible over and over: Mavra Chang, one of the few beings ever to escape from the Well World. And on that occasion, she had brought back with her a computer named Obie, who just might be the second most powerful computer in the universe, after the Well World itself. With those two on his trail, Nathan Brazil could run-but could he hide?

Great pulp Sci-Fi........2005-02-19
Just to be clear, this is not Don Quixote. This is solid, fun, satisfying science-fiction/fantasy.
Also to be clear, do not read any of the "recent" Well World novels, they have little to redeem themselves. They are neither solid, fun or satisfying.
As noted by the other reviews this is the fourth of the original five part series. I say five part series, but really the series is a trilogy with both the second and third novels (Exiles/Quest) and this novel and the last novel (Twilight) counting as just one book each.
Of the series, the last part of the trilogy (this book and Twilight) remains my favorite.
I will not spoil any plot points, but I will say that if you like the genre, you will enjoy this book.
Book four of the Saga of the Well World.......1998-06-04
As a general warning, this is the fourth book of a tightly knit series. While the book is written to stand on its own, greater enjoyment can be found be reading the previous three novels: Midnight at the Well of Soul, Exiles at the Well of Souls, and Quest for the Well of Souls; before reading this one.
This book begins back at the same interstellar community where the previous novels begin (it's know as the Comworlds, or the Com for short). An alien race has arrived from another galaxy and is bent on conquest of ours, and since they're more advanced than the Com, they're winning.
Mavra Chang, survivor of the War of the Well World, has just returned to the Comworlds.
The true reality of the situation is far grimmer than they realize, and when they do catch up with Brazil, they regret it.
Overall, the series really starts to pick up steam here, and that after admitting that the previous novels are already good to begin with.
Vol. 1: Midnight at the Well of Souls
Vol. 2: Exiles at the Well of Souls (Part 1: War of the Well World)

Roland Vernon's biography of Krishnamurti, subtitled The Invention of a Messiah, could also have been called simply Understanding the Man. Krishnamurti's life has been well chronicled, but Vernon keeps his sights on the people and events that shaped Krishnamurti's life. We learn about Charles Leadbeater, the allegedly pedophilic discoverer of and tutor to Krishnamurti; Annie Besant, the notorious social activist and Krishnamurti's second mother; and the mysterious and painful "process" that brought Krishnamurti to enlightenment. Besides the influences on his public persona, Vernon is also fascinated by the sometimes contradictory and less well-known private side of Krishnamurti. He had close ties to his brother Nitya, whose death galvanized Krishnamurti to forsake the organization that created him. And he carried on an extended clandestine affair with Rosalind Williams Rajagopal, his early companion and later wife of his friend and business partner. Not quick to pass judgment, Vernon looks at various perspectives of these people and events, unafraid finally to come down with his own well-reasoned opinions. Star in the East depicts Krishnamurti as a complex man who encouraged everyone to think for themselves. --Brian Bruya
Book Description
The story of Krishnamurti, one of the twentieth century's most influential and controversial spiritual figures, takes place in the crucible of sexual scandal, mysticism, and an extraordinary personal history.

An Excellent History of Flawed Perfection.......2006-09-25
The author of this book makes his own biases clear in the way he characterizes the various people who make up this fascinating history. It is a virtue that he does so, for it makes easier the reader's attempt to evaluate the figures portrayed across the near-century of Krishnamurti's life. In Madame Blavatsky, Charles Leadbetter, Annie Besant, and others, there is no lack for colorful and dubious characters to enliven this tale.
But it is not fiction. The Theosophical Society, an occult fraternity founded by Blavatsky, came to expect the discovery of a Messiah, a World Teacher. That someone proved to be a malnourished, seemingly vacant-minded young boy discovered during a visit to the beach near Madras. K (as he came to be referred to in later life) was removed to the Theosophy center in that area, where he was subsequently fed, educated, and groomed for his life as the Vehicle of the sacred.
The story is one of the jostling for place and recognition in a spiritual hothouse of jealousies, competition for recognition, and the role of K as he matured from utterly pliant child to increasingly restive adult. His ultimate emergence as a very independent and iconoclastic "Messiah" proved to be either the undoing or the fulfillment of Theosophy's original hope--depending upon to whom one listens.
The author ends this volume with the ultimate chapter's consideration of the significance of K, and various views of his life. To the author's credit, he once again makes his own perspective clear enough, while presenting a good range of varying viewpoints. The reader will be sufficiently equipped to consider more than just the author's "take" on this matter.
Whatever K was, the reality is that we are left with ourselves. As he pointed out during the decades of his talks presented around the world, it is up to the individual to find the truth, relying upon no doctrine or authority. If nothing else were to emerge from his life's work, that message alone would seem worth taking to mind and heart.
inspiring.......2005-06-16
I found this book interesting and amazing. It was a detailed account of his early life and the beginning of his spiritual path.
Krishnamurti was being "groomed" to be the next Messiah. At some point he decided that he did not want that for his life and left the organization that was preparing him for this role in his life.
Krishnamurti's wisdom is undenyable it shines through all of his books. A clear spirituality that completely transcends religousness and cuts clear to the shining light of the spirit.
I enjoyed this book tremendously and would recommend it to anyone.
Well Researched Book.......2005-02-08
There will be no definitive work regarding Jiddu Krishnamurti. After reading Pupil Jayakar's biography of Krishnamurti, and following my interest with Star in the East: Krishnamurti, I think both books compliment each other.
Star in the East: Krishnamurti is well researched, and a delight to read. Regardless of your personal perspective, the story of Krishnamurti is relevent and important to understand. It bridges the Victorian and Edwardian societies of the turn of the century, with the idealism and hope for a better world, with a "new" approach to creating a universal brotherhood focused around a single world religion.
The author points out that the world teacher project may have been created as a diversion away from leadbeater's alleged pedophilia misconduct.
Krishnamurti is a role model and worth serious academic study. The star in the east does a fine job, and summarizes volumes of published material.
"Pax Pax", in British schoolboy slang of circa 1910 meant truce. I think Krishnamurti came to terms with Leadbeater and the T.S. in the 1980s. Krishnamurti's biography is a fascinating story, unable to be told in a single book.
Millions of words were printed about the T.S., yet none of it is useful or relevant. Krishnamurti's later works and the story of his life is relevant and important to the 21st century.
Krishnamurti was a hypocrite.......2004-04-23
It was quite disappointing to read that the man who claimed to live an unconditioned life without inner conflict did anything but. K once said 'If we could, and we must, establish a deep, long, abiding relationship with nature, with the actual trees, the bushes, the flowers, the grass and the fast-moving clouds, then we would never slaughter another human being for any reason whatsoever'. He had no compunction, however, in persuading Rosalind to have two abortions - this from a man who supposedly believed in the sanctity of all life and had a strict vegetarian diet. K supporters might argue that the teachings are more important than the teacher but I think these revalations are devastating. K claimed to have 'seen' and therefore had freed himself of his conditioning, but the facts of his life do not bear this out. He did not 'see', he was conditioned, and therefore when he spoke about the 'immeasurable' and 'that which is most real'etc. he was speaking about something he had never really come in to contact with.I feel the author could have gone into some aspects of K's life a bit more, particularly Rosalind's abortions which only receive one paragraph on page 203. However, this book is well worth reading and shows, regardless of what the authors intentions might be, that Krishnamurti was a liar and a hypocrite.
The Many Sides of Krishnamutri.......2003-09-22
Having read some written conversations of Krishnamurti's (On God, On Truth, & Awaking of Intelligence) & trying to find a book that he wrote (there are a few early ones, but Krishnamurti in his later life did not believe in books), this well written but questionable biography helped fill in the historical gaps. The book starts with his Theosophical Society upbringing under Besant & Leadbeater when Madam Blavatsky had already pass away, but basic historial details of the Society are mention. I am not sure if the author was fair to each of the leaders or just over described, or focused too much on the historical "Dirt", specially on Leadbeater. Sometimes the book jumped back & forth in time, & I had to reread to sort out the chronological order. Also Krishnamurti's affair with Rosalind Williams Rajagopal, was the information from Rosalind daughter's book or was it independently researched? In the end the book revealed many things about Krishnamurti that his written conversations did not reveal. For example: before I read this biography, I looked at Krishnamurti as a forced messiah turned nihilist philosopher teaching practical mysticism, but in the end I see a man still under certain influences (entities or Kundalini) while claiming to be free (another paradox). The book was very enjoyable, but read it with an open mind & do what Krishnamutri would do: question it & find out for yourself.

Have had this book since it's first publication.......2002-03-09
Wonderful Book, I've used it so much that the pages are falling out of the bindings. I have a Cookbook Library of over 100 books and I can honestly say that I come back to this one more often times than any other. They have lots of pictures and they have the items that you can make at a drop of a hat.
One of the things that I do not like about some of the other cookbooks is that some of the items are not easy to get a hold of in your average grocery store and this one is just what it says "BRAND NAME".
Happy Cooking
Great American Brand Name Recipe Cookbook.......2002-01-04
I love this cookbook. Mine is falling apart, the pages are falling out. The recipes are easy to make. Anyone can learn to make with these recipes they are so easy to do, but there are hard ones, too. I need to find another one. I gave my son six months to find one for my birthday.
Easy and Great-tasting recipes.......2001-11-15
This cookbook is one of the most versatile and easy cookbooks that I have ever come across. All of the ingredients listed in the recipes are very easy to find in the grocery store. I personally have made many of the recipes. All of the desserts and cookies are phenomenal!!! The International recipes are easy to follow and superb. My only complaint is that the book is out of print, I would love to share it with some people I am close to.

old lace and linens including crochet.......2000-11-10
I MUST AGREE WITH THE FIRST TWO REVIEWS 100%. BUT I BOUGHT IT ANYWAY, TO ADD TO MY MANY OTHER BOOKS. THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT WAS THE PHOTOS. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE UNLESS THEY JUST WANT TO SKIM OVER IT AND ADD IT TO A COLLECTION THEY MAY HAVE.
Small and thus easy to carry for a ready reference........1999-03-05
That the author loves linens is obvious from her narratives. There are some tips on care and history that are worthwhile. Many of the identifications are misleading, and the prices quoted are most frequently inaccurate. The descriptions, although vague, may be a useful starting point for the novice or casual collector, I would not refer this to anyone as a definitive work, but it is useful as an entry level reference.
Bevy of examples covering many styles but inaccurate prices........1999-01-10
First 28 pages are well-written, lyrical descriptions but not terribly historically informative. While there is an extremely wide range of items shown, many photos are reproductions which lose much in the process.
Identification of types is very spotty with even the obvious (hardanger and filet) listed only as drawn work or 'beautifully crocheted corners'. Dating of items seemed fairly accurate but pricing was "not of this earth". Most dollar amounts could easily be halved and one collar on page 43 listed at $55-60 I purchased for $8 from a knowledgable dealer.
This book is useful as an addendum to the library of a serious collector. It is however, of little value to the novice or student because it lacks identifying criteria and the pictures are not high enough quality to decipher detail.

Hartie concisely covers a wide range of subjects and includes a comprehensive listing of advisory organizations, product and service resources. Part I of the book, Banish the Ugly from Your Life, is a blueprint for green, sustainable living. Discover how to replace toxic and unsustainable products from household cleaners to food (including recipes) to furniture to personal care products with safe, eco-friendly ones. Hartie is the tough but motivational Life Coach in her approach to cleaning, removing clutter and on organizing the home or office. Part II, Bring in the Beautiful to Create a Harmonious Environment and Self, includes a chapter on Earth-based spirituality and a fascinating look at the Four Elements (Earth, Fire, Air and Water) and the Medicine Wheel. The core of Hartie s philosophy blossoms in Chapter Seven, Applying Harmonious AdjustmentsTM: Using Feng Shui and Other Techniques for Powerful Results. Unlike other Feng Shui authors, Hartie has experience as a designer and her skills are apparent in this chapter and the following two. She has combined principles of Feng Shui, the Four Elements, color, energy, Vastu, and good design principles that create a unique and eclectic approach to home decorating. Finally, Hartie provides guidance on how to manifest personal or professional desires. In Part III, Putting the Pieces Together, Hartie skillfully integrates the many subjects of the book into a unified and cohesive whole. At its cover price of $19.95, Harmonious Environment is a value alone for the comprehensive green living product suppliers in the Resources section. What makes this book so truly ambitious, however, is what lies beneath the surface. In a sense, this book is only marginal

Formulate a plan to keep your house clean

Decorate with Confidence
Reading through the list of harmful products gives you an idea of the ingredients to avoid in cleaners and how they can affect your health. For an antibacterial spray, the author suggests water and essential oils and for cleaning silver she also suggests more natural solutions like baking soda and vinegar. Using Borax and water is less dangerous than chlorine bleach fumes and you may want to try this in your shower. You may enjoy products by Seventh Generation.
Chapter three felt a little out of my personal range of expertise, although we know that thoughts can affect our environment and life and can move our life in a positive or negative direction. This chapter deals more with spiritual practices. Chapter 6 also delves into a deeper connection with nature, personality types and elemental powers. The list of Yin and Yang is helpful to create a balance of the two in your home. An entire chapter is also dedicated to plants, gemstones and crystals.
"If you are the average American woman, you expose yourself to over two hundred synthetic chemicals that are found in the products you use as you prepare yourself for the day. These products do not simply sit on your skin; approximately sixty percent of these ingredients get absorbed into your bloodstream." ~ pg. 91
Chapter four is especially informative and essential if you are trying to be healthier and want to find organic alternatives to products filled with synthetic chemicals. Why should you avoid petroleum and talc? Why is there lead in hair dye?
The section on an Eco-Friendly Kitchen is interesting and the chapter on natural and organic foods also gives ideas on how to save time in the kitchen. A few recipes are included:
Vegetarian Pasta Primavera
Fajitas
Risotto with Scallops or Shrimp
Lemon Rice
Grilled Vegetables
An extensive list of resources and a very handy index complete this well-researched and extremely helpful book. If you enjoy Feng Shui or decorating and organizing your home, there is a lot to enjoy and you may find the information in this book can also help with fatigue, anxiety and sleeping problems.

The author extends this tranquility to finding the right job and the right mate. Whether or not it is the alignment of elements in the home, focusing on clearing clutter in your life can only have positive effects. A very pretty book.
Life-changing ideas.......2007-02-02
Worried about what your family is being exposed to? Are you hoping to increase your wealth or find love this year? Trying to decide on the best color to paint your walls? If you answered "yes!" to any of these questions, then Harmonious Environment is a must read.
The goal of this book is to create positive energy both in your home and your life and to be kinder to the earth. Hertie is a design consultant, chef, gardener, and healer. She shares her professional and personal experiences with the readers, i.e., homemade earth-friendly cleaning products, tasty recipes for carnivores and vegetarians, etc. She recommends that after reading this book, you apply the process in the following order:
1. Remove toxic products from your home and garage
2. Clean, declutter, clear and organize your home
3. Buy/use environmentally friendly products
4. Learn how to use place objects (furniture, mirrors, etc.) to manifest change in your life
The relationship between people and the Earth is an important part of Harmonious Environments. To remind ourselves of this interconnection, Hertie recommends bringing the natural world into your home. Some ways to do this include displaying rocks and minerals and using houseplants as pollution busters.
Hertie uses Harmonious Adjustments (TM) that combines "the best principles of Feng Shui, the application of the Four Elements based on your birth date, color, Vastu, energy work and good design." I've read a few Feng Shui books in the past, but the author's clear instructions and enthusiasm has given me the confidence to actually try this at home.
I liked how the author reminded me to use this book as a guideline but to also trust my intuition. Do what looks and feels right for you. I also liked how the Resource section listed all the suppliers, organizations and further readings mentioned throughout the book.
Even if you aren't interested in Feng Shui, this book has valuable information about becoming an informed consumer and living a more eco-friendly life.
Armchair Interviews says read Harmonious Environment and get ready to change your life!
Fantastic book with tons of information.......2007-01-18
I got this wonderful book as we are moving our place of business, and wanted to make smart choices. From the first page, Ms. Lehmeier-Hartie shares her expertise in an organized, thoughtful way. The day after I got the book, I negotiated a much more logical and healthier ventilation system, and the section on colors was far and away the most organized and logical explanation I have ever seen.
Some aspects of our project are beyond our control, but I became a much more active participant. We anxiously await our new space, and know that the suggestions made here will add to the beauty and functionality of our space. I wish I could have rated this 10 stars!
