Another Wonderful Family Drama.......2005-11-26
I enjoyed this dark family drama by Gail Mitchell. She has the ability to create characters that seem so real. As we continue to read, they become people we care about and suffer with.
The main character is Grace whose abandonment by her own Mother has impacted her life as an adult. She carries the lack of self-esteem and self-love into the bedroom with the strangers she brings there for sex, not love.
Will Grace find a way to forgive her Mother and free sherself. But when it is a Mother's mistake, is forgiveness ever possible?
Gail writes the truth, in an easy to read, immediately engaging novel.
I have greatly enjoyed both of her books.
Wonderful Novel !.......2005-10-18
A story of family. Grace, a night club singer looks for love in all the wrong places. Feeling abandoned and deceived by her mother Grace hold wounds that break your heart. This was a wonderful story. I fell in love with the characters. Gail Mitchell writes with charm and the skillful ability to bring her characters to life with layers of detail that live on after the last page.
" The Things She Does At Night" is a family portrait of love, pain and redemption. This story is romantic. A slow burn. A wonderful novel.

The Things She Does..........2005-08-31
After being taken from her alcoholic mother at a young age, Rachel Taylor is living in the projects being raised by her loving aunt Mama Belle. At the age of 14 she has an affair with an older married neighbor, which results in the birth of her daughter Grace. Four years later, history repeats itself with another man, and her son Eric is born. It is her love for her children, and wanting to give them a better life that makes her decide to leave them with Mama Belle, while she and her latest man go to Atlanta in search of a better life for them. She returns months later, alone, sad, and angry; smoking pot and drinking becomes her way to escape life.
Sometimes the bad decisions made in your youth can determine who you become as an adult, and the effect it has on those you love. Forgiving someone who has hurt and disappointed you is never easy, especially if it's the father you never knew or the alcoholic mother who abandoned you as a young child. New Orleans club singer Grace Taylor has had a difficult life, and she wants nothing to do with committed relationships with men or a normal relationship with her mother.
Unwilling to allow herself to be hurt or abandoned again, Grace chooses to bed only married men and only for one night. But after a frightening experience, she considers changing her sexual habits; no more one-nighters. Memories of all the unhappiness she endured begins to flood her mind and the thoughts of change are washed away. Grace once again believes she is too damaged for any other lifestyle, until Julian Richard walks into La Jazz, the club where she works and into her life.
Rachel Taylor, Grace's mother, has gotten her act together and returned to New Orleans to live. Missing from her life however is her only daughter, Grace. Can she convince Grace to forgive her and allow her to become a part of her life?
It isn't easy letting go of the past or forgiving those who have hurt you. In Gail Marie Mitchell's sophomore novel, IN THE THINGS SHE DOES AT NIGHT, she shows that without doing just that, your future will forever be overshadowed by the past. And without forgiveness emotional wounds never heal. Overall I enjoyed this book. It was a good read and the secondary characters helped round the story out.

The Things That Comes to Light.......2005-08-21
The Things She Does at Night, by Gail Marie Mitchell, is the story of Grace Taylor. Grace is a singer in a club in New Orleans. One night stands are her specialty until she meets a handsome stranger, Julian Richard. Immediately, Julian recognizes his former self in Grace and tries to convince her that love is worth finding. Although Grace tries to seduce Julian out of the commitment he has made to remain celibate, he remains steadfast. Julian's gentlemanly ways shake Grace's world right down to its foundation; causing her to take a look at why she does not want to be in a committed relationship. Grace does not have to look far--the answer lies in her childhood with a mother that she has grown to despise. As much as Grace hates to admit it, she cannot move forward until she unloads some of the bondage that keeps her chained to the past.
This was a nicely written novel, with a strong plot. The story moved along at a nice pace and the characters were well-developed. I found myself cheering Grace along as she came to grips with the issues that kept her from accepting love. As Grace traveled the road to forgiveness, I traveled with her; feeling each lump and bump along the way.
If you are looking for a read that explores the depths of human nature, I recommend you curl up with Gail Marie Mitchell and The Things She Does at Night.

Young Gifted and Lost.......2005-08-12
The Things She Does At Night - By Gail Marie Mitchell
Mistakes, grace and redemption are the ingredients in Gail Marie Mitchell' second novel The Things She Does At Night. In this fast paced emotionally driven novel we are introduced to Rachel, mother of Grace and Eric who were raised by matriarch Mama Belle until her death.
After that time because of Rachel's inability to care for her children they are sent to live with relatives. The consequences of the choices she made and those that were made for her divides the family and only God can heal the open wounds. Lost on how to love and hurt because she thinks her mother preferred alcohol, men and her brother over her; Grace begins singing in a jazz club in New Orleans and having frivolous affairs with men whose name she cannot remember to ease the pain of her past. In life and in literature the very thing we run from always seems to find us.
The author has an amazing anointing to capture life issues that tug at your heart long after you close the book. The Things She Does at Night photographs the young adult in us all trying to find something to fill the void left by a family member. I truly enjoyed this novel for many reasons but the main one being it was well written with wonderful characters that jumped right off the page.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A pretty dirty, nasty, crime caper. The art style by Cooke is more in the Powers vein. Catwoman is broke, and takes on a heist that is way over her head. Unsurprisingly, she displays overconfidence, and things do not go too well. Shades of 100 Bullets almost. She manipulates a man she likes into going to work for her, an ex-boyfriend, and when really, he should shoot her, his emotions or hormones get the better of him, leading to the latter half of the story.
Fun, but is it supervillain level?.......2007-07-23
Selina's big score is a quick, fun read, but she seems less like a supervillain and more like an extra-sexy, extra-violent version of "The Italian Job" A team of bad guys are out to rob a mafia train full of cash. Fun, but I would expect more from a super-villain story.
A good read...!.......2005-06-26
This is an entertaining, intelligently written, fast-paced comic, featuring the return of The Catwoman after a self-imposed retirement. The book gives some of her back-story, introducing James Stark, the man who helped train her as a thief, and also includes a side plot with detective Slam Bradley, which intersects with the storyline in the "Catwoman" series written by Ed Brubaker. (The crossover doesn't quite jive with what's going on in that book, where Catwoman has basically gone straight, and has taken Slam in as part of her Scooby gang, but it's okay: Bradley is a great character, and it's nice to see him here as well...)
Writer/artist Darwyn Cooke is one of the best storytellers working in comics these days, and this is another fine offering by him... just wish there were more books like it! Recommended.
Good, just not Great.......2004-11-26
Selina's Big Score lets you in on what happened between her supposed "death" and her current series. Basically she needs another "big score" to get her back on her feet. So she forms a team and attempts to take out a mob train full of money. The overall story is a bit cliche, but the character interaction, dialogue, and narratives are great. The art isn't exactly masterful, but the thick lines and solid colors flow well with the story. so if the cliche doesn't bother you then by all means get it. personally, i don't regret buying it, but i don't exactly pull it off the bookshelf every day for another reading. good, just not great.
The Sequential Novel as Film Noir.......2004-07-24
Those who are enjoying Darwyn Cooke's current NEW FRONTIER, with its tale of Silver Age superheroes going face-to-face with the McCarthy era paranoia during which most of them were created, will delight in his somber crime drama for DC Comics from 2002, depicting an important chapter in the life of Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman.
Those who are baffled by why a live action film franchise would take one of the most intriguing characters in the Batman canon, ignore her storyline and -yet again- play her for cathouse stereotypes full of campy sleaze are invited to read SELINA'S BIG SCORE, and experience a tension-packed drama which should have been the shooting script and storyboards for an authentic Catwoman film.
From skillful word to telling image, author Cooke is resplendent in his painstakingly full style. At once spare and simple in his delivery, he can be vivid in his wry, well-rounded characterizations, and incisive in the rich complexities he unflinchingly brings forth for the reader to feast upon. Perfect, then, that Cooke is the ideal author to tell the dagger-and-dues tale of a weary adventurer down on her luck; revisiting old haunts, setting fresh stakes, and facing a bigger price than any are prepared to pay.
Evoking shadows at every turn, a deadly angle lurking just beyond reach, Cooke conveys the alluring peril of the genre, from the grim sarcasm of Raymond Chandler to the stiletto-tongued sass of Walter Mosley. Visually, Cooke conjures a pithy scape worthy of the best in film and comic, from Milton Caniff's STEVE CANYON and Alex Raymond's RIP KIRBY to the Azzarello-Risso 100 BULLETS, onward into the night glare of MURDER, MY SWEET through the grand operatic tragedy of ROAD TO PERDITION.
With a melding of caricature and cinema, mood and motive all his own, Darwyn Cooke tells stories to be read, and read again, growing deeper with each turn. SELINA'S BIG SCORE stands firm as a saga of the times, and one for the ages.
Those who think comics are supposed to be comicky, with no fibre in the narrative meal, may want to avoid this, or risk a rude awkening. Otherwise, set your alarms.
Just don't wait for the bell to toll...

Not one of Anthony's best books.......2003-08-14
I have to be honest here--this is the one novel by Anthony that I just couldn't finish. I had absolutely no interest in the plot, characters or narrative voice used. Don't get me wrong, there are things to admire about the book but admiration doesn't mean it's a great novel or even a good one.
There are enough recaps of the plot here so I won't go there. Let's just say this is the least appealing of her well written books. Someone commented that it had moronic plotting. I don't think that's the case, it's just not a compelling or interesting story. Everybody stumbles. We sometimes race along at such a pace that we don't pay attention to the cracks in the sidewalk or the uneven pavement. Here Anthony fell in love with the concept of creating a novel around her beloved Brazil. Unfortunately, the concept is much better than the execution.
Provocative SF.......2002-06-23
Patricia Anthony has written this novel with obviously extensive understanding of politics, gender relations, the UFO subculture and the craft of writing. It is a tragic, sad tale, filled with absurd moments and startling beauty. Her characters are vivid and surprisingly believable in their eccentricities and obsessions. Her canvas is wide and it contains a full spectrum of people whose lives (and deaths) are woven into an intricate and subtle mosaic of mystery and tragedy.
The novel is provocative science fiction, compact and quite as readable as her previous books. It is a bit eccentric, as perhaps expected, and eminently comparable to a Phil Dick novel. But you wouldn't mistake hers for his. As he was, she is. An original.
Muddled, uninspired and offensive..........2002-03-31
One day I have to figure out how to give a book no stars 'cause I feel horrible about giving "Cradle of Splendor" a star since it deserves none. This may be the worst book I have ever read (and I've read a lot of books). Let's just get it out in the open: this is a bad book. Bad writing, moronic storyline, and annoying characters. Bad enough I had to put up with cliched writing and a asinine plot but I couldn't understand half of it! I'm still not exactly sure of what happened. Some kind of alien/sex-thing..not that it matters. And let me just say that this book is very offensive to Brazilians. Throughout the book she describes Brazilians as lazy, dirty, incompetent, violent and stupid. She describes Brazilian society in the worst way possible and at the end thanks a Brazilian family for hosting her. I wonder what they would think of the beautiful way she depicted their country...don't buy this book. Please.
Unfulfilling.......2002-01-20
Reading this book was like going to dinner at friend's house and smelling something wonderful in the kitchen. Yet when the meal was served it was something totally different and unappetizing. It starts out with an interesting idea but then spends the rest of the book hinting around it while venturing off in some pseudo-spy story with unwarranted and disturbing sexual overtones. One is left with a lot of unanswered questions about the activities behind what the author wrote. Her notions on international relations was simplistic, at best. Very disappointing.
Anthony gets it right.......2000-12-07
Patricia Anthony's oblique style of storytelling is usually an ill fit with her broad-stroke plots, which is why her novels Brother Termite and Happy Policeman missed the mark and are worth reading only for Anthony's stylism. In Cradle of Splendor, however (as with Cold Allies before it), Anthony finds a plot sufficiently multifaceted and enigmatic to match her style. It is hard to explain the plot, not only because so much of it is a surprise but also because so much of it is left to speculation. Given how little of the story is spelled out, it is surprising how well Anthony's writing holds the reader's attention. I cannot call Cradle of Splendor a failure because it leaves us with so many questions, possibilities, and levels upon which it can be taken. I am sure that was Anthony's intent, and I found it a welcome and interesting challenge. Her ambiguity would make Cradle of Splendor an excellent novel for book-club discussion -- and her writing makes it a good read.

Highly Recommended!.......2000-11-01
Early American Furniture: A Practical Guide for Collectors by John Obbard is filled with information about all aspects of furniture from this period. Chapter one starts with an overview of the furniture trade, followed by understanding period and style, evaluation of quality, identifying period workmanship, and identifying fakes and frauds. Each type of furniture has its own chapter (wing chair, Windsor, chest of drawers, desk, highboy, etc.). There are many illustrations, but the only photographs are on the cover. With all of this information covered, one can sense that this book states concepts "straight to the point". For example, on page 64, there is a paragraph which states to look for a detached shoe or two part shoe and that this is something to note with old furniture. A beginner is not going to grasp that concept from the paragraph and illustration. Regardless, this is a good review source for the experienced person or a good outline for a beginner. I have spent three times the price of this book for many with less information.
Best Guide for the Collector.......1999-11-27
Whether you're a collector or would-be collector of american furniture, this is the single must-have book for you. Well-written and quite readable, this book is more than just a reference. Its engaging style and informative nature will make it hard to put down. It'll help you spot the best quality pieces and recognize those that have been tampered with. For the new collector buying from auctions or dealers, this book is priceless. It'll help you spot the best quality pieces and recognize those that have been 'restored'. If you want to really know what your colllecting, get this book first!
If you are interested in Early American Furniture, read this.......1999-10-25
Having been sent this book as a present by a friend in the US, I felt I must tell others just what a treasure trove it is. It has been written by someone who not only obviously loves his subject, but who has written a clear, easy-to-read amd well-illustrated guide for those of us who have developed an interest in early American furniture but who lacked expertise. It also tells you how to care for furniture. I can't recommend it highly enough.

A riot of color and an array of extraordinary designs mark this volume as a truly innovative and exciting approach to quilt design. Concentrating on color, proportion, and scale; the power of line and shapes; and other principles of good design, Wolfrom teaches how to create quilts that are radically different from the traditional. Landscapes, geometrics, abstracts, florals--every subject yields unusual and striking results. Even those loosely based on standard quilt patterns have been interpreted in surprising new ways. The quilts illustrated (by a variety of artists) are absolutely gorgeous; the inspiration power of these alone is worth the price of admission. --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
Great pictures, great advice, poor format.......2007-06-05
I checked this book out from the library and I'm having a love-hate relationship with it. The lessons on color, scale, balance etc. are wonderful, and I'm learning a lot. And the full color pictures of the quilts are, as the title suggests, spectacular. But the format of the book is really bad. One paragraph will reference a quilt, but not give the page number, just the photo number. So I have to flip through the different sections to find it. Sometimes they'll reference two quilts that illustrate a particular lesson, but they are located in totally different parts of the book. There just doesn't seem to be any organization, and without page number references, it's been a pain having to flip back and forth between the quilts & the lessons.
Putting the quilts referenced in a particular lesson either on that page, or putting all the quilt pictures in the same section would have been a much better idea. I would not purchase this book. But if it were given to me, I'd probably cut out all the quilt picture sections, staple them together, and keep them seperate from the book so I could reference them.
Reccomended by the accidental quilter.......2000-08-08
Joen Wolfrom and her friends are quilt designers and artists and if you want to be linked into the creative zone of quilting--you've got to take a look at the quilts in this book. There is a color photo of a quilt called "The Dream" in the Visual Dance that I recognized immediately. I'm a writer and the same image has been coming to me in a short story format. I bet there are musicians and potters and all kinds of folks out there that will tell you the same thing. I took a workshop in quilt design from Joen last March and it really encouraged me to put in all the design time before embarking on a quilt. Just thumbing through this book and gazing at the quilts is like a graduate class in fabric design. :)mary cox
Excellent book for Quilters and Designers.......1999-04-24
Not only are the quilts (in full color!) truly spectacular, but Joen is also the best teacher of the principles of design and color I've found in the "craft" world. Thank you, Joen, for choosing to teach us this stuff! Too often, the design and color aspects are "assumed" by the author of quilting books.
Absolutely the best book on quilting design there is. If you are looking for "how to" make the quilts, this is not the book. There are other books for that.
An invitation to The Visual Dance........1997-09-05
The Visual Dance is the best book about how to quilt that I have read.
The text is encouraging, clear and informative and there are many pictures of astonishingly fine quilts. Although it would be the book I would choose to own if I had to own but one quilt book, it is interesting, beautiful and different enough from most quilt books that it would be worth having however many quilt books it joined.
Wolfrom ranks highest in quilters' eyes.......1997-05-02
I am an avid quilter and have over 80 books on quilting. Wolfrom's I refer to time and time again. The Magical Effects of Color and The Visual Dance are worthwhile additions to any quilter's library. 10+
