Book Description

The Wished For Country is set during the founding period of the Maryland colony, during the mid-17th century. The novel focuses on the entwined stories of James Hallam, a carpenter and indentured servant; Ezekiel, an African slave brought to Maryland from Barbados; and Tawzin, a Piscataway Indian, kidnapped to England when a child, and now back in America. While Hallam goes on to become a soldier and a player in the politics of the Maryland colony, Ezekiel and Tawzin become the center of an outcast group of blacks, whites, and Indians, who find themselves striving to reinvent themselves and their world. The stories of these three men, the women who love them, and the community they form, bring to vivid life the experiences of those who came to America pulled by a dream of what could be shaped from an emptiness that embodied promise, of those who were unwillingly brought to be the instruments of that dream, and of those who saw the shape of their world forever changed by the coming of the Europeans.

"The Wished For Country illuminates an aspect of our history that we dare not forget. Wayne Karlin's new book is an enthralling and important novel."-Robert Olen Butler

"A powerful and wonderful recreation, deeply imagined and richly detailed. This is a book to be cherished and [one hopes] highly honored."-George Garrett

"Again Wayne Karlin has demonstrated himself to be a serious artist who is concerned not only about what story is told but how! He has woven together strands of history and humanness and art into a wonderful whole."-Lucille Clifton

Wayne Karlin is the author of five novels: Crossover, Lost Armies, The Extras, Us, and Prisoners, and a memoir, Rumors and Stones. He lives in Southern Maryland.

5 out of 5 stars Wayne Karlin Writes Like A Dream.......2004-04-23

I wish I could put Wayne Karlin's "The Wished-for Country" into the hands of every individual who loves reading beautifully crafted, poetic fiction. That said, Karlin's novel about the early days of Colonial Maryland is not entirely fiction. He was inspired by an actual written account of an early white settler, Father Andrew White, S.J., and has placed an excerpt of this account and others among his own chapters, which he calls "Songs". These "Songs" have their own true life in Karlin's poetic crafting-- it is impossible to tell where documented history ends and the fictional story begins.

This is an excellent book for those interested in exploring different perspectives on the English colonization of Maryland, for "The Wished-for Country" is told by many different narrators, including a Piscataway, a Jew, an English settler, an African slave, and even a hawk and a lion. Also of interest is the the motley, multi-racial "Wesort" group at the center of the novel's plot.

For those who like seeing their characters come back in other novels, fans of "A Wished-for Country" will find decendents of the Hallam family in Karlin's novel "Prisoners".

"A Wished-for Country" is now my favorite novel. When I reached the last page I turned back to page one and began again.

5 out of 5 stars New American Heroes.......2003-01-02

Karlin's characters bring to life the messy moral and political landscape of the 'New World.' The murky waters of the Southern Maryland swamps are an all-too-appropriate analogy for the confusion of natives and settlers in negotiating an unstable environment. The dangerous and unpredictable setting underscores the violence humans turn on each other in any/every setting, regardless of religion or ethnicity. Jacob Lombroso's band of misfits, the Wesorts, represents a circle of individuals who wish to live outside the existing social boundaries. This tale of their journey to establish a place for themselves amidst the turmoil and violence around them creates an alternative to traditional narratives of "the first Americans" by introducing previously marginalized voices: a slave, an indentured servant, an English girl stolen from her settler parents and raised by Indians, and so on.

One of the unique accomplishments of this book is to reinforce the violence of the religious paradigm by which our country was established. Readers find religion-both in America and in Lombroso's recollections of Europe-just as terrorizing a force as greed. Some of the most powerful passages-such as the journey of the dying Tyac's soul to the afterlife-emphasize the horrifying rape of souls which accompanied the Christians' rape of the land. Tawzin, a Piscataway Indian captured in his youth by the Catholics and returned to his homeland by Lombroso, best describes Christian conversion methods: "You place me in the dark, you take everything away from me, and in the dark and terrible emptiness in which you leave me, you put in Christ."

To me the book's most shining 'moment' is the presence of Cabbalist Jacob Lombroso and his obstinate resistance to the territorializing force of Christianity. ("God save me from your love," he tells a meddling priest.) His unstinting pursuit of tolerance and freedom for himself and his new community constitutes more of a heroicism to this reader than the greedy zeal of America's traditionally recognized forefathers. [The book mentions historic record of many of the characters, Lombroso included, and I'm not sure exactly where Karlin departs from the record.)

America's praise for the religiously persecuted in Europe who 'found refuge' in the New World always overlooks the persecution that the 'persecuted' inflicted on others when they got here. That Karlin's novel reminds readers of the territorializing instinct of religion is one of its greatest strengths, suggesting a natural place for it within the emerging Post-Colonial 'tradition' in literature. At the same time, this is in many ways a utopian novel, since it focuses on the determination of these early Americans--in the face of unending opposition-- to live in harmony.

5 out of 5 stars What it was like to live in the New World centuries past.......2002-11-10

The Wished-For Country is an original and inherently interesting novel by Wayne Karlin which is set in Maryland during early Colonial times, and opens in the year 1634. The interwoven tales of a carpenter, an indentured servant, an African slave and a Piscataway Indian who was kidnapped to England as a child blend in this evocative and masterful recreation of what it was like to live in the New World centuries past. The Wished-For Country is a superbly written, thoroughly engaging, and highly recommended historical novel.

Now, the minions of Darkness have stirred in the deep and the long watch is over. An army of mythic monsters has invaded our world, and Galen and his friends have begun to fight them. To join the battle with universal darkness, even his father returns. The forces of light have gathered in Castle Everness, which must stand, or all is lost. John Wright has been called the most important talent of the new century, and received rave reviews for each volume of his debut SF trilogy, The Golden Age. Now, in Mists of Everness he continues the towering fantasy begun in The Last Guardian of Everness, a stirring epic that will inspire readers everywhere.

    5 out of 5 stars Pagan/Christian Apocalype Fantasy.......2006-08-15

Ok. Yeah, you're gonna have to read the first book, but this pair of novels is heads and sholders above the fantasy pack. Lots of action and plenty of imaginative ideas. The author does seem to let a wee bit of right wing/libertairian ideas knock about. And I sort of got the feeling toward the middle of the book that this was turning into a Christian Apocalypse idealization, (which almost made me put it down) but the sense of fun and myth as well as a equal dose of pagan spirit won me over by the end. I think the author has done a good job stiring up old and diverse mythos into a tastey new cocktail.

3 out of 5 stars Anything but average.......2006-08-01

This is one of those books that receives an average rating even though nothing about it is average. Rather, it features a combination of several above-average qualities with much that is unfortunately below.

What is there to like? First of all, the sheer inventiveness of the plot. Wright is well aware of his antecedents -- including Zelazny's Amber chronicles and Neil Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels -- but has crafted a thoroughly contemporary take on some of the same building blocks, one outside the realm of cookie-cutter conventional fantasy. What if, the story asks, a family with a generations-old task is finally called upon to perform the task and fulfill a prophesy...but they stop to think about it, and decide that performing their task may not be the best solution for the world after all? That's the question that defines the surface of the story told by the Everness books.

The other chief aspect I enjoyed was the style of writing. Wright has a unique and distinctive writing style. Nothing is ever described in detail, yet Wright chains together great masses of words and concepts to shape the mood of each scene. Consider the following sample, wherein Raven, one of our heroes, travels through a city of torture on the dark side of the moon to the rescue of another character:

"There were barred gates hanging open at each crossroads, with lines of heads on spikes above, mummified by the lunar air. The next street was lined on both sides with starvation cages, and the one beyond that was lined with impaling screws.

They turned again, passed a gate hung with severed hands. In the near distance was the central dome. The archstone of the main gates had the head of a medusa hanging from it, with hair of snakes and eyes of viper-hate.

Even the shadow of the medusa in the mirror was almost too much for Raven; there was a stinging pain in his eyes, and he felt faint. [...] When he recovered, they crossed over a moat filled with blood into the shadow of the central dome."

Not all or even most of the book is this grim, but this gives you an idea of what the writing is like: ideas like a lunar city, a moat filled with blood are just casually tossed out, and while the level of detail is minimal, the quantity of things mentioned is unrelenting. Some readers may not like this -- certainly I wouldn't like all books to be written this way -- but I enjoyed the writing for its uniqueness and audacity, and for the way it conveyed mood by constant reinforcement of concepts.

I must also say that I found the selkie to be the most entertaining villains since Croup and Vandemar in Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere: in many ways the addition of humor makes the horror of the selkie actions that much more real and terrible.

Unfortunately the unrelenting action of Wright's style of writing does highlight one of the books main shortcomings: the characters, or rather the lack thereof. Characters young and old do not really develop over the course of these books; they are presented with little or no background or personal information, act according to a fairly narrow set of characteristics, and finish the book much as they began. Fantasy of course is ripe for symbolic characters, but those here are more stereotypes than symbols, because we never see enough of them, get to know them well enough, to see them as human (or as close to human as they're meant to be). As has been pointed out in other reviews, this is particularly true of the female characters, who appear to want nothing more out of life than to be interrupted and kissed senseless (Wendy is bad enough, but there is also a scene with Titania that was just silly).

The other big negative, also mentioned by other reviews, is Wright's tendency to preach his philosophical ideals and political-economic ideas. Preaching, to me, is when characters make speeches unasked for and unnecessarily: when Anton explains why he has no wish to be President is a perfect example, as his speech doesn't really answer the question at hand. The sad thing is that Wright maintains a proper narrative distance for the first book and a half in this series, with ideas present but not preached. The tone only becomes preachy in the last 100-200 pages, but because the ending is our final experience of the work and presents the solutions on which the story hinges, that preachy tone really damages the impression of the work as a whole. It is especially an issue because the characters are so underdeveloped: they are such figureheads, it's impossible to see their words as coming from their own personal belief systems, as opposed to mouthpieces for the author. And of course the lack of characterization also damages any points the author wishes to make, because if the only people who could thrive in the world he desires are magic-wielding archetypes as opposed to normal humans, that's not a world most of us are capable of thriving in.

All told then this is a curious book. Readers desiring thoughtful, sympathetic characters should stay away. Readers desiring lots of detail should stay away. Readers who have read a fair amount of speculative fiction, who need a minimum of words to put a picture in their heads, who can overlook a bit of proselytizing, and who are looking for something different than the usual genre fair, may well find this a welcome break from the norm.

    2 out of 5 stars A Bit of A Letdown.......2005-12-07

This second half of the Everness story lived up to the first half in terms of originality and imaginative storytelling, but I was left feeling strangely flat by the end of it.

One of the things that bothered me was the character of Wendy, a half-mortal, half-fairy girl who, I guess, was meant to embody the feminine virtues. My problem with Wendy was that Wright made her far too childlike. I get the whole free-spirited, honesty/wisdom-of-a-child thing, I really do. And Wendy's character was certainly imbued with admirable courage and a great zest for life. But you can't give me a character who naively skips around talking about "mommy" and "daddy" one minute and then expect me to turn around the next minute and embrace the idea of her doing the wild thing in the Oval Office on her way to becoming the mother of Humanity v2.0. It was completely unconvincing, because there simply was no woman in Wendy -- she was all precocious little girl. And if sexually charged little girls are supposed to be the standard for admiration...well, I don't even want to think about the kind of message I'm supposed to take away from that.

So I ask, why were there no mortal female counterparts to the heroic Waylocks and Pendrake? Were there no parts for rational, serious, and mature mortal women to play in mankind's battle against tyranny? I would have liked to have seen at least one mortal woman who, if not necessarily heroic, was at least worthy of respect. Instead, I was left with the feeling that only goddesses and fairy girls were good enough to stand alongside mortal heroes in their fight to save humanity.

One of the other issues I had with this book was that the text was in need of better editing. Normally, I can get past small mistakes without too much irritation, but in a story that relies so much on symbolism, subtext, and allusion, each word is important. Not only were there too many typos, but I found myself brought to a screeching halt by such lines as: "She dreamed of a dark and windowless city drowned beneath the waves, seven towers of imperishable metal rising into the sunless gloom of the abyss, while blind and transparent fish sported among the tombs and windows...." I read this and thought to myself, if the city was windowless, how could the fish be sporting among the windows? Was this just careless writing, or was the wording intentional? Either way, the flow of the story was interrupted, and I found it harder and harder as I encountered more mistakes to trust either the author or my own interpretation of his words.

Finally, I found the ending to be a little too pat, a little too neat. It was almost painful in its wishful contrivances (though I really did enjoy the introduction of Prometheus near the end -- he was a fun character). Between the instant creation of a "controlled" Big Bang, and Pendrake's "magical means of discovering the perpetrators of any crime committed at any time anywhere in the world," my reaction by the end was little more than a resigned sigh.

5 out of 5 stars John C. Wright does it again!.......2005-07-18

This is the conclusion of the story begun in The Last Guardian of Everness. There is no easy way to summarize the plot, but the struggle to prevent the Darkness from taking over the Earth without calling in the Armies of Light (thus creating a "perfect" pastoral and static world), continues. Peter, Raven, Galen, Wendy, a brave little mouse, and other unlikely characters, all learn new things about what they are and aren't capable of. (Raven also discovers the great advantages of consulting a librarian, but nobody cares about that so I won't mention it at all.) Oberon and Titania get their licks in, and Wendy's finally puts in an unambiguous appearance, scrambling to prevent the start of a nuclear war in the Pacific and then to prevent (or undo) a coup by the tools of the Power of Darkness in Washington. And those aren't even the important battles.

It's all very exciting, and, as always with Wright, very beautifully written-wonderfully easy to lose yourself in.

    Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Less preaching, more writing, please.......2005-06-13

The first book in this series was brilliant. Unfortunately, in this volume, Wright (who is apparently some species of libertarian) feels compelled to preach at us constantly, to the point where halfway through the book his villians are driving about in armored vehicles, cackling "Thank God for gun control -- now we can RULE THE WORLD! Heh heh heh." I happen to agree with most of the opinions Wright expresses, but I'd really rather not be slapped in the face with them as a substitute for good story telling. If you think Atlas Shrugged is a brilliant novel, you'll like this a lot. If you prefer actual literature, you'll be disappointed. Ah, well.

      Book Description

Stemming from his anthropological field work among black religious groups in Philadelphia in the early 1940s, Arthur Huff Fauset believed it was possible to determine the likely direction that mainstream black religious leadership would take in the future, a direction that later indeed manifested itself in the civil rights movement. The American black church, according to Fauset and other contemporary researchers, provided the one place where blacks could experiment without hindrance in activities such as business, politics, social reform, and social expression. With detailed primary accounts of these early spiritual movements and their beliefs and practices, Black Gods of the Metropolis reveals the fascinating origins of such significant modern African American religious groups as the Nation of Islam as well as the role of lesser known and even forgotten churches in the history of the black community.

In her new foreword, historian Barbara Dianne Savage discusses the relationship between black intellectuals and black religion, in particular the relationship between black social scientists and black religious practices during Fauset's time. She then explores the complexities of that relationship and its impact on the intellectual and political history of African American religion in general.

5 out of 5 stars Important study in sociology/anthropology of Black Church.......1999-02-07

This book is extremely important in that it gives a full perception of "newer," or less traditional African American bodies which made a significant impact on the black religious experience. Arthur Huff Fauset (1899 - 1983?) was a novelist and anthropologist whose interest in the Black Church may have stemmed from the fact that his father was an A.M.E. minister, even though he died when Fauset was an infant. His mother was white and a Christian convert of Jewish heritage (Fauset, 1971, 127). He was a member of a literary family: his older sister, Jessie Redmond Fauset (1884-1961), was a novelist and poet, and was considered "the most prolific of the Renaissance writers of the genteel school" by Calvacade magazine. Arthur Huff Fauset's 1944 book, Black Gods of the Metropolis: Negro Religious Cults in the Urban North, provides a glimpse of five black religious bodies: the Mount Sinai Holy Church of America, Inc.; the United House of Prayer for All People; Church of God (Black Jews); the Moorish Science Temple of America; and the Father Divine Peace Mission Movement. These were chosen because they were "among the most important and best-known cults of their respective types, and hence among the most representative" (Fauset, 1971, 10). Using participant observation, he presents their origin, a portrait of their respective leader and/or founder, their organizational forms, and an explanation of their practices and rituals. He was a fellow of the American Anthropological Association and was further prepared by studying folklore "extant among Blacks in Philadelphia, British West Indies, Nova Scotia and in the South" in 1931. His master's thesis, "Folklore From Nova Scotia," was the first collection of black folklore in Canada (Fauset 1971, 127). Other books included accounts of Sojourner Truth and a biographical account of the American Negro. He was a contributor of many essays, short stories, articles and book reviews to Crisis and Opportunity. He also wrote several novels, including African Lament on Shaka, King of the Zulus. According to the biographical account, Fauset was involved in "militant civil rights activism." His friends included Alain Locke, W. E. B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Paul Robeson, and A. Philip Randolph. This lead to work as the editor of the Philadelphia edition of Powell's newspaper, The People's Voice. He was also honorably discharged from the Army just before being commissioned during World War II due to his prior civil rights activities (Fauset 1971, 128). In the introduction to the 1971 edition of the book, John Szwed states that Fauset's book is important because it gives a heretofore unavailable description of the practices and beliefs of blacks in the United States: The beginning point for understanding any religious institution is at least elementary knowledge of its practices and beliefs. But it is a sad fact that we have better descriptions -- incomplete as they are -- of religious beliefs and practices in West Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean than we have of those of black people in the United States. And it is in this respect that Black Gods of the Metropolis is a singularly important book. Fauset, in writing one of the first books of urban American ethnography, took very seriously the culture of the Negroes of North America. (Fauset, 1971, v) Fauset (1971, 107-108) concluded that African Americans' "over-emphasis ... in the religious sphere" was related to the comparatively meager participation of blacks in other institutional forms of American culture, the result of racial discrimination which forbade black participation in mainstream society. Thus, the one institution with which blacks are closely identified was a form of cultural, spiritual, physical and leadership expression. He maintained that blacks were attracted to cults because they offered both spiritual nurture and freedom to control their own destinies through businesses, politics, social reform and social expression. He also surmised that the personal charisma of the leader was an important factor in attracting members, that the cults had rigid taboos "over certain features of the private lives of its members, frequently reaching into the most intimate details of their lives." Sexual inhibitions were of ultimate importance in most of the cults he studied. He also found that the literal adherence to the Bible as a guide lessened as the programs of the cult became focused upon social, economic and political uplift.

          Book Description

Spirit of the West presents an enticing array of hearty dishes rich with robust flavor and color. Authors Beverly Cox and Martin Jacobs extend a gracious invitation to join in this delicious roundup of recipes from the American West.

More than 100 recipes provide dishes that satisfy even the most demanding appetites. Breakfast prospects include Pecan Bread with Chokecherry Jelly, Potato Doughnuts, Buttermilk Pancakes, and the old prairie standby, Cowboy Coffee. After a long morning in the saddle, real cowboys can tuck into a Bowl of Red with Sourdough Biscuits or Kansas Fried Chicken with Authentic King Ranch Beans. Come and get it at a dinner smorgasbord of Mesquite Smoked Turkey, Prime Rib of Beef, and Pot Roast with Dumplings. Special occasions demand special chow like a Cream Can Supper (the Western Frontier equivalent of a clambake complete with sausages, corn, and potatoes cooked together in a milk can).

Behind this hearty food lies a rich heritage influenced by the cooking techniques of the native American and Mexican peoples. Ranch house cooking has been further enriched by the many ethnic cuisines brought to the region by its settlers. Photographs feature objects inherited (like many of the recipes) from the authors' forebears to illustrate this entertaining glimpse into the foods that fed the American West.

          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Home-Style Ranch Recipes.......2003-05-05

Spirit of the West is a fantastic cookbook, chock full of great Ranch-Style recipes and home-style food. It is the IACP Cookbook Award Winner, and once I opened it, I could tell why! Its filled with some great recipes, tantalizing photos and accompanying stories.

My particular favorites are Quichelna Cattle Company's Rum ribs,Abuelita's Chicken Soup,Flour Tortillas, Way Station Pot Roast with Dumplings. I'm looking forward to trying the biscuit on a stick and Mrs. Swan's White Cake! YUM.

Fans of cookbooks and western cuisine are sure to appreciate this cookbook. The photos are huge, tasteful, and numerous, and the recipes offer a delightful mix of western and Mexican inspired food. Just reading this cookbook makes me hungry. =-)

5 out of 5 stars Warm up your Kitchen!.......2000-08-16

Give your kitchen a shot of true blue ranch cooking with this wonderful book. This extraordinary informative and practical book will win new friends among cooks everywhere, whether experienced or new to the kitchen. Spirit of the West cooking is to be valued chiefly for its "heirloom" dishes. Treasured heirlooms that come down to us from a day when hard physical labor and a need for thrift made chuck-wagon cooks provide satisfying, hearty, filling meals. Rich simmered soups; old fashioned pot roast with dumplings, hot puddings and wonderful baking recipes will take you on a nostalgic trip to the days when homemade breads were a part of everyday life. The Spirit of the West cookbook has the best of the old recipes, easy to prepare with step-by-step instructions attuned to yesteryear's simpler, more informal approach to mealtime. Once you have tried just a few of the recipes, you will understand why generation after generation of good cooks has shared with confidence and assurance their best cooking. Use the full-color photographs for inspiration; then turn your kitchen into the most welcome place in your neck of the woods.

5 out of 5 stars Alot of really different ideas using dough.......1998-08-27

I'm an avid researcher on a subject I like. I first got this book from the library. This book has different ideas that are classy and artistic. Excellent close photos. Only wish the author had listed places to get baker cutters (alphebet letters and numbers) but it's a British book for US buyers anyway. It spoiled me to wishing the author would show even more of her brilliant ideas...maybe a pinch less on explaining simplier ideas. I'm picky when spending cash on a book...this one hooked me!! Thanks for having it Amazon!

The Eagle and the Rose is a convincingly sincere account of Altea's dreary childhood in northern England, where as a young woman she realized her psychic powers were not the insanity she feared. 5 out of 5 stars A GRAND Medium.......2007-05-06

This book was given to me by one of my customers following the death of my son. I went on to write, Blessings In The Mire, and had this title not been taken, it would likely have been the title to my book. Having read this, I was privy to multiple magical events, including a couple of Eagle sightings, and one very large and beautifully expressive Rose miracle. This book, and Ms. Altea are priceless additions to your reading library, especially if you've lost a loved one.

5 out of 5 stars REMINDERS OF THE LIGHT.......2007-05-06

I read this book after the death of my brother. It brought my out of the darkness and back into the life that continued to move on around me. It is an enlightening book, even for those who have traveled far on the path.

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-10

I read this book years ago when I was doubting a meaning in life and everything felt worthless. It gave me hope and provided inspiration for my journey. Must read.

                      5 out of 5 stars Questions.......2006-06-17

I really love Rosemary Altea. I wish I knew her. I spoke with a different trance medium, a very well known one in the U.S., and I was not impressed. Judging from this book and Soul Signs, I think Rosemary has a lot to offer.

I have some questions though. The stories in her book give me the impression that there is no reincarnation, that you live this one life and then you continue it in Eternity. I don't see the sense in that. I thought we have immortal souls and memories of other lives, meaning that our immortal soul is different from this one specific life we are living now. So why would a four year old who gets run over by a car continue living as a growing up child in Eternity? Why not just be the soul you are, and leave this life behind?

And why should the etheric body be the same as our current body? Why not just leave all this rubbish behind and move on to bigger and better things? I don't want to be saddled with this one identity forever.

Any answers, send them to lfbno7@aol.com.

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2005-05-13

This is another excellent book by Rosemary Altea! I, like many of the other reviewers, couldn't put it down.

In general, this book is about Rosemary's strugge to understand her psychic abilities (& her fear that she was in some way crazy);the process she went through in developing these special skills; and the wonderful insights she's gained along the way.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interesed in psychic abilities &/or spirituality as a whole. An open mind is needed to benefit from the insights brought forth.

                      Book Description

In the Morland Dynasty series, the majestic sweep of English history is richly and movingly portrayed through the fictional lives of the Morland family. It is 1915, and the euphoria of the first days of World War I has faded, but the nation is more determined than ever to win. While the Morland men go overseas, the women play their part at home, but it is a strange and emotional time for all. And with the Eastern Front at a stalemate, everything depends on the new offensive on the Western Front at Loos.

                          Book Description

In the Morland Dynasty series, the majestic sweep of English history is richly and movingly portrayed through the fictional lives of the Morland family. It is 1501, and Paul, great grandson of Eleanor Morland, has inherited the estate and has a son to follow him. But he fathers an illegitimate boy by his beloved mistress, and bitter jealously between the half-brothers causes a destructive rift that leads to tragedy. Paul’s niece Nanette becomes maid-in-waiting to Anne Boleyn, and at the court of Henry VIII witnesses first hand the events leading up to the rift with Rome, her mistress’s execution, and the further efforts of the sad, ailing king to secure the male succession.

                          4 out of 5 stars A turbulent reign.......2007-09-22

This is book 2 in the Morland family series, set in the reign of Henry the 8th and dealing mainly with the life of Nanette, a beautiful young Morland woman who is a maid of honour and friend to Queen Anne Boleyn. There are of course, other issues with other family members which add spice and interest to the story, but in this instance, Nanette holds centre stage. She started as a maid of honour to Queen Katherine, along with Anne Boleyn, or Bullen as the family is sometimes called, but Anne soon took the eye of Henry who had previously had her sister Mary as his mistress. Anne was having none of this "mistress" business and refused to surrender her virginity until marriage. Nanette stayed with Anne after her marriage, right up to the steps of the scaffold where she lost her head. She returned to her home, living a happy but cruelly short married life until, many years later, she returned to Court to be a Maid of Honour to Anne's daughter, Elizabeth the 1st. It's a fascinating look into the public and private lives of courtiers in Tudor times, with much involvement in religious matters and the perilous times leading to the foundation of the Protestant Church in England.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent History Review.......2005-09-13

This is a terrifice historical novel. Best to read the first book, though. It can be read as a stand alone book. The Morland Dynasty is the #1 book of the 24 successive books in this Dynasty novel.

4 out of 5 stars The Morlands during the reign of Henry VIII.......2004-12-11

The second book in the Morland dynasty series, The Dark Rose picks up with Paul Morland, great-grandson of Eleanor. The family is now rife with jealousy and hatred. Paul cannot understand his heir Amyas, and struggles to bond with his illegitimate son Adrian. It is a situation doomed to end in tragedy.
Paul's half-brother Jack and his brood seem to have the happiness he cannot grasp. Nanette, his niece, rises at court as maid to Anne Boleyn. But even they cannot escape the uncertainty to come.
In the Dark Rose, the Morlands experience hard times - through drought, floods, religious reform and court intrigue. But through it all, the family finds new ways to bond and survive. Once again, the history of the period is cleverly woven into the fortunes of the family, particularly the marriages and religious reform of Henry VIII. An entertaining read.

5 out of 5 stars brillant and historically acurate.......1999-09-18

I have all twenty one books of this series from volume one upto twenty one. I started collecting them approximately sixteen or seventeen years ago. The stories are great the characters are facinating, but it is her historical bases for these novels that is so brillant and makes them very readable. I look forward to every new episode of this story that comes out, and I am waiting with baited breath for the next installment.

Gary Kieffer's Bald Eagle Rose opens as Eric LaBreche is boarding a flight to White Bear Lake, Minnesota, to restore a 1930 Hacker-designed speedboat for an old friend, Tim Swenson, who is giving the boat to his wife Sue for their tenth anniversary.

Even before the journey begins, Eric has an unsettling premonition that something is going to be different this time. As soon as work is begun on the boat, a series of strange happenings begins to envelop those around him. He soon realizes that at the center of these strange events is one thing, "Bald Eagle Rose."

When happenings escalate to murder, Eric not only realizes he must find the secret that Bald Eagle Rose is holding-he also realizes he cannot do this alone. To accomplish the task before the murders reach home, he enlists the help of Devon Phal, a computer expert and a dear friend of the Swensons. Now that the race is on, will Bald Eagle Rose give up her secret before anyone else dies?
