Midway through Howard Bahr's gripping, evocative second novel, Colonel Burduck sums up the Civil War with this rueful conclusion: "Too much had happened, was still happening, and enough remained for generations to wallow in bitterness, making charge and countercharge, revising and accusing and apologizing long after the smoke had drifted away on the wind, and those who had walked through the smoke were dust." The Year of Jubilo, set in Cumberland, Mississippi, in the summer of 1865, is the account of some who passed through that smoke.
A reluctant soldier, Gawain Harper was goaded into joining the Confederate forces in 1862 by the rabid secessionist Judge Rhea, father of the woman Harper loves. After three years of fighting the Union, the former professor of literature is now trudging home defeated and confused, weighed down by the thought that he is "walking through someone else's memory." The South of his past has indeed vanished, and the town Harper returns to is now governed by the victorious (but wary) soldiers of the North and overflowing with vengeful planters, opportunistic spies, and the fear and ingrained attitudes of its vanquished citizens. These characters are larger than life, as only those who live in such a land and time--one of Queen Anne's lace and poisonous snakes, of Victorian manners and the human indignity of slavery--can be. There's "King" Solomon Gault, the ruthless captain of a band of insurrectionists, plotting an attack on the ruling army; Colonel Burduck, the battle-worn commander who captured slave ships off the African coast in his youth and must now maintain order in a region that once supported slavery; Molochi Fish, a grotesque semi-being who lurks on the edges of humanity, scarred by brutality and meting it out in return; and of course Harper, who, spurred on by the meddling but ebullient Harry Stribling, dives back into this mess to create a life and retrieve a love.
Time is as enveloping in The Year of Jubilo as the lingering smoke of war and the sudden downpours that drench Cumberland's burned landscape. Bahr weaves his characters in and out of one another's lives, creating an almost smothering net. Harper notes, "they were spared of death, so must once again pay the tally for living; free, so they were indentured to tomorrow." In a fascinating narrative of epic proportion and intricate detail, Bahr intertwines life, love, loyalty (or the lack thereof), freedom, slavery, and death. --S. Ketchum
Book Description
On a spring day in 1865 Gawain Harper trudges toward his home in Cumberland, Mississippi, after serving three years in the Mississippi Infantry. Unmoved by the cause that motivated so many others, he had joined up only when the father of his beloved, Morgan Rhea, told him that he would never be allowed to wed Morgan unless he contributed to the war effort. Upon his return, he discovers post-war life is far from what he expected. Morgan has indeed waited for him, but before they can marry there are scores to be settled. Written with scrupulous respect for historical accuracy, The Year of Jubilo brilliantly evokes a time of sorrow and defeat, of anarchy and violence, and also of hope and rebuilding.AUTHORBIO: Howard Bahr was born in Meridian, Mississippi and served for eleven years as curator of Rowan Oak, the William Faulkner homestead and museum in Oxford, Mississippi. His first novel, The Black Flower, was a New York Times Notable Book and received the Harold D. Vursell Memorial Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He teaches English at Motlow State Community College in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

A Fantastic Story.......2007-08-28
By the end of the novel, I was a bit tired of the whipporwills and the mockingbirds. The descriptions often got a bit out of hand, in my opinion, but the story is fantastic and Mr. Bahr has written another memorable Civil War novel. I can't wait to read "The Judas Field"!
Again, I'm scratching my head as to why "Cold Mountain" was so popular. Mr. Bahr tells a better story, in my opinion.
Beautiful prose, but story is lacking.......2007-06-12
Anyone who enjoyed Howard Bahr's rich, insightful, and lyrical prose in "The Black Flower" is certain to enjoy it again in "The Year of Jubilo". The same melancholy, haunting spirit that characterized his first novel pervades this work, too, and if you're in the mood for that type of story Bahr certainly delivers.
But while I love Bahr's way with words, this story left me cold. First, the heavy atmosphere of the story gets tiring after a while. It seems that everyone in the story is depressed, angst-ridden, and suffering from some kind of loss or regret. One wonders if anyone is EVER happy in Cumberland, Mississippi.
To make matters worse, Bahr has apparently contracted "Coldmountainitis", a disease which causes writers of Civil War fiction to populate their stories with as many bizarre characters as possible. For example, we get to meet Molochi Fish, a man whose severely flaking skin is a consequence of his mother dropping him into a vat of boiling water for some unknown reason (he in turn gets revenge by pushing her into the moving gears of a gristmill). Not only does he see ghosts, including his murdered mother's, but he shacks up with a Choctaw Indian woman who is literally insane (Molochi realizes this when he finds her eating a live snake). Sometimes he wanders around town at night and peeps into people's windows. Another denizen of the town is a Scripture-quoting fanatic named Old-Hundred and Eleven who doesn't wear shoes or groom himself. The colonel commanding the Union forces occupying the town suffers from memory blackouts, and one of the bad guys gets his jollies by having relations with the still-warm body of a murdered woman. Sound like YOUR neighborhood?
Another weakness in the plot is the stupidity of the villains, a motley bunch of Confederate bushwackers led by plantation owner King Solomon Gault. Bahr makes sure we know that they are evil by "treating" us to a graphic (and pointless) rape scene. Gault's dream is to reignite the patriotic fervor of the Confederacy and get the war started again by leading his men to a stunning victory over the occupying Federal troops. Bahr paints him as cruel and cunning, but when Gault finally sets his Sinister Plan into motion, it has all the subtlety and strategy of Burnside at Fredricksburg. I've seen Wile E. Coyote come up with better evil plots in Roadrunner cartoons.
Despite a few poignant scenes and Bahr's literary craftsmanship, "The Year of Jubilo" is long on weirdness and short on sympathetic characters. After the splendid "Black Flower", I was disappointed with this effort.
Once in a Great While.......2007-05-31
This is one of those once in a great while reads. One of those books you stumble on, that you look forward to reading each night and that you wish there were more of. Very, very good read. The joy of such a good book stayed with me for a long time. I can't wait to get to the authors next book. If it is only half as good, it will be wonderuful.
Mr. Bahr is becoming one of my favorite authors!.......2007-04-21
Reading Bahr one realizes the difference between literature and writing. I believe this book will be a piece of lasting literature. Mr. Bahr's prose at times feels like poetry. This is a great story as well, about a southern Civil War soldier that has just come home to Mississippi after the war to a changed South. This is Mr. Bahr's second novel. His first, "Black Flower," was equally supreme. I wil be reading all of his future works as I am sure generations will to come.
A good book with some reservations.......2005-04-13
There is no doubt that Bahr is a skillful writer and The Year of Jubilo is a good book. The reader never gets a feel of a strong passion between Morgan and Gawain, the love interest in the book. The reader wonders if they are really in love with each other.
Bahr, trying to keep us in suspense, constantly leaves the reader wondering what will happen next. He takes us to a critical point where some critical action is on the verge of happening, and then switches to another, unrelated scene. When he he gets back to the critical point it is usually rather anti-climactic.
Bahr has populated his book with too many characters. However he does well in his characterizations but they are hard to sort out. Surely he could have gotten by with fewer characters.
There there is the time problem. He skips to former times without proper transitions.
Bahr is better at creating villains than heroes. His Gault is the epitome of intelligence combined with evil. The reader goes through the book hoping for the death of the evil Gault, but knowing that it will not happen until the end.
Bahr's treatment of the post-Civil War situation is excellent. At war's end some of the Confederates want to continue fighting, and some are tired, but none seem to show any regret for having participated in a deadly, futile war.
I recommend this book to readers with reservations stated.

Great book!.......2007-03-29
One of the only places to find many of the short works by this wonderful author. Definitely an enjoyable read!
Worthy posthumous addition to RZ's legacy.......2007-01-03
Roger Zelazny wrote some of the finest fiction I've ever had the pleasue to read. Although this collection of shorts does not match the quality of his other anthologies, there are still plenty of stories that ensnare the mind and entice the imagination. The Amber shorts at the end of the book made me want to reread the entire series for the umpteenth time. A gifted writer who was taken all too soon, Roger Zelazny truly has channelled some Manna from Heaven in this compendium.
Many answers.......2006-02-25
Good book, sure answers a lot of questions that were left unanswered in Zelazny's last Amber novel, as well as expanding on a few side stories that seemed like they were left on the editing floor from that same novel. The balance of the book is traditional Zelazny, always leaves you wanting more....alas, I imagine this is truly the last from him. RIP RZ
great book.......2006-02-25
I was impressed with Zelazny's ability to make short stories great stories. I knew from reading the Great Book of Amber that he could write a spot-on novel; Manna From Heaven confirms his ability to turn one page into a whole universe...
Only for the devoted Zelazny fan.......2005-09-14
While this book contains a few short (some very VERY short) stories I had not read before, most have already appeared in other volumes of stories (such as the Kalifriki of the Thread stories and the title story). This volume has some significance in that it was edited and put together posthumously. I was someone disappointed in the quality of editing in this book, noting numerous typographical and spelling errors.

What a genious idea Debbie Busenkell had when she wrote this wonderful cookbook filled with such inspirational Bible stories. I've enjoyed preparing the tasty low-fat recipes as well as reading the verses that go along with the recipe. I was so very delighted with her book, that I purchased 5 more copies for Family and Friends for gifts. They too were extremely delighted with Debbie Busenkell's wonderful idea for an inspirational cookbook. I certainly hope she does another book along the same lines, she is truly gifted.

Book Description
The inspiration for the content of the book came to mind over a period of three months starting last June. The connection took place after a particular difficult challenge concerning my husband's well-being and I started writing down on paper daily happenings. After a complete healing for my husband, by the grace of God, my habit of daily writing just continued as I would awake in the early mornings and write down what ever was coming into my thought processes. I realized something extraordinary was taking place and I literally had to stop the flow of beautiful writings and type them up for publication in a book to leave them to the world for the betterment of mankind. For the three months following, I have been typing and editing for spelling so as to prepare and place into a cohesive manuscript. This manuscript is just one of four of approximate length, all typed, all finished, all on the same wavelength.

Worth tracking down and savoring.......2007-08-29
These are mainly fantasy novels but the erotic content is far more than minor. The erotic element is interesting because sex is central to the magic, but it's the characters that make the novels memorable. They have a lot of individuality and have emotional bonds that are more important than the sex. More novels from this author would be welcome.
A fun romp.......2003-09-24
Ander works as a musician in a brothel, but when he meets the young lovers Nicolai and Sorel, he is drawn to them in more ways than one. Rescued from his dull life, Ander is brought back to their home, but not before discovering that the young lovers are also wielders of magic, a magic that has its origins in sex. The powerful mage Thane welcomes Ander to their community and enlists him in their fight against the evil zamindar and his sorcerers. Still grieving for a lost love, Thane tries to train Ander and help the young man achieve his destiny, but the mutual attraction between them clouds their decisions which might prove deadly as the zamindar's army closes in on their community. Equal parts lively fantasy and erotic romp, "Apprenticed to Pleasure" is a great beginning to a trilogy that explores the magic of sex.
What's wrong whit erotic novels?.......2002-12-22
It's well written. For an erotic novel, it has interesting denouements. The concept of sex magic is great, though totally alien to this universe ( or at least to its physical and biological laws). But what the hell? I've loved it.It's not totally devoid of literary merits. Honni soit qui mal y pense.
OH MY MAGE!!.......2002-10-14
This is my first time into Erotic Sci-Fi and I can't even explain what a good time I had. The swashbuckling adventures of the main characters really had me going and the sensuality of the intimate encounters even had me going further.
I just ordered Brandon Fox's other books.
If you are in the for a can't put down book this is for you.
BEAUTIFUL EROTICA.......2000-01-26
Brandon Fox is a Mage of Words. Like few authors I've read in any genre, Fox is able to create vivid and wonderful word pictures. He creates a painting in your mind, beautiful colors and scenes, good mind candy! Plus, what a relief to read erotica that is warm and loving and sensous and focused on the whole experience of love-making and not just orgasm. CONJURING THE FLESH is more magic and just as beautiful. More, please, Mr.Fox... PLEASE!

The Sophia Teachings Robert A. Powell
Sophia: Archetype of the Divine Feminine - On The Sophia Teachings, scientist and scholar Robert Powell uncovers a secret stream of wisdom flowing through the heart of Christianity: the feminine principle known in Greek as "Sophia," or Holy Wisdom herself. This sacred embodiment - named in the Old Testament as the first living being made by God - has comforted and guided seekers of truth in every age and culture, including our own.
In this epic, six-cassette work, Robert Powell unveils Holy Sophia's path from ancient goddess to our modern archetype of feminine wisdom. He surveys the wonders and teachings associated with this unacknowledged treasure from Christianity's mystical past, spanning the Greek philosophers ("lovers of Sophia"), King Solomon (the archetypal seeker of wisdom), and the cosmic visions of Hildegard of Bingen and the Russian Orthodox "Sophiologists" of this century. Communion with Holy Sophia, Powell shows, has profoundly influenced the very foundations of our civilization and its spiritual development. Who is this archetype of the Divine Feminine, and what does she mean to us today? Combining historical facts with theological insights, Powell vividly portrays this beloved figure's rebirth in our time as a source of supreme comfort and higher inspiration. Powell explores the Christian esoteric secrets of Sophia in detail for the first time, offering meditations and instructions on how each human being can begin to embody the wisdom of Sophia. The Sophia Teachings represents the most complete audio study course ever to unveil and embrace the "Mother of all humanity." 10-page study guide

The Feminine God.......2006-11-10
If you are like me you have always felt there was something missing in modern religion...the feminine side of God. This book helps explain what happened to that aspect of the divinity when the Catholic Church gained control of Christianity and made it completely male-oriented, condemning any sign of femininity to silence and dishonor.
A great overview.......2006-10-24
This is a very good introduction to the Sophianic tradition, which has transcended many faiths and cultures since the dawn of mankind. Powell does a good job of integrating different historical sources and experiences to provide us a compelling account of the role of The Divine Sophia in human history, despite the historical attempts to suppress Her influence.

Customer Reviews:
Almost useless.......2006-12-15
I have 25 years' experience in buying and selling antique wood and brasswinds, so this book was of very great interest. It claims to be a buyers'/collectors' guide but fails miserably. It gives lists of original prices for 19th century brasswinds by only TEN makers without consistent indication of current values. Pictures are arbitrary, poorly reproduced and often too small to be useful. Commonly encountered makers (Boosey, Gautrot, Sax etc) are absent. The "subjective price list" is poorly researched and not limited to antiques. Shame on Schiffer Publishing for publishing this book, it is almost useless. A potential buyer or seller will find little or no value in this book.
Interesting book, limited value to collectors.......2000-08-09
This book has lots of illustrations taken from old music catalogs and limited text. Most of the text that is there is quoted from other sources. Information on about 10 companies only and skips some of the largest including Conn, Buescher, York, and Boosey and nothing on some of the smaller old brands like Lehnert. The valuations given are for specific instruments, and the guidelines for generalized pricing are next to useless, with statements such as: "Valuing antique brass instruments is like shooting at a moving target in the dark." All in all some limited information about a number of companies, and many interesting old illustrations of historic instruments, but not of much use in determining value of instruments other than the specific ones in the book.

Book Description
In the seventeenth century the Manchu conquered the whole of China, replacing the Ming dynasty.
The original Manchu and Mongol documents selected for the this publication, translated and amply annotated, provide fascinating new information about the relations between Manchus and Mongols before the Manchu conquest of China.
They include diplomatic correspondence, military liaisons, legal cases, and records of tribute missions and present a detailed picture of the relative position of the various Mongol tribes vis-à-vis the future emperors of China.
Customer Reviews:
One of a Kind.......2005-04-14
This book is perhaps the only collection of Mongol language sources of it's type. Scholarship of the last twenty years has emphasized the importance of non-Chinese sources for the study of early Qing history, but has largely overlooked the value of Mongol language sources. The work consists mostly of letters and other documents circulated between Hong Taiji, the leader of the Manchus, and various Mongol tribes during the period when the Manchus consolidated their power in Inner Mongolia. The documents are each clearly introduced and contextualized by the authors, but are presented individually and non-teleological. The only problem is that it does not seem to have been particularly well edited; there are a few strange typos.

A delightful behind the scenes look at TV and Film .......2005-05-13
Garry Marshall is a true gem in Hollywood. He is a beloved and respected producer/director/writer/actor who never takes himself too seriously to appreciate life and his family and friends. In his own humorous way, Garry tells his story from his humble beginnings to his incredible career in TV and film. He has worked with some of the top actors in Hollywood and it is a total delight to read about the behind the scenes making of HAPPY DAYS, MORK AND MINDY and LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY along with his films BEACHES, FRANKIE AND JOHNNY, NOTHING IN COMMON and PRETTY WOMAN. Garry tells it like it is and doesn't hold back when talking about actors and studio executives. He also admits to his fondness for nepotism. Good timing and luck put Garry in the right place at the right time and he shared his good fortune with his sister Penny Marshall by helping launch her career. The book is filled with insight and revelations. Garry's anecdotes are too humorous to miss. How did they come up with the famous opening for LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY? How did he come to cast Robin Williams and Pam Dawber in MORK & MINDY? Despite budget restraints, Garry was able to create a very memorable opening for Bette Midler in the film BEACHES. It's fascinating to read how Garry created some of our most beloved TV shows and films. When a problem arose with a production, Garry found a solution. He never hestitates to admit to his failures and mistakes and never fails to give credit to others who have supported him. WAKE ME WHEN IT'S FUNNY is inspiring and a great motivator for anyone trying to aspire in any field...not just TV or film. Garry's honest and down to earth insight will leave the reader wanting more.
Up there with "Harpo Speaks" for all-time feel-good bios!.......2003-10-27
This book is a joy! Garry Marshall is a fine writer of jokes for stand-up comedians of yore, sitcoms &, apparently, of full-length show biz autobiographies. He discusses his life in an extremely entertaining way. His asides - about moviemaking, camerawork & tips on the directing/producing process - are enjoyable for everyone, not just aspiring filmmakers. There are (truly) laugh out loud sections as well (Two Words: Kathi Wathi)...this is a man who seems to live his life with passion & decency & drive, ALWAYS with the added bonus of humor. Yes, he dishes the "dirt" about his celeb peers, but in a completely non-malicious way. Best of all, here's a man who accomplishes much but doesn't take himself too seriously. Good-humored, good-hearted, crisply written & hilarious. Can't recommend this book highly enough!
Garry is my directing God!.......2001-08-09
Pretty Woman has been my favorite movie since I saw in in the theater at the age of fifteen and since then Garry Marshall has been my favorite director. But Garry proved what a great person he is when I attended a book signing for this book back in 1995. I was only twenty, and pretty much the only young woman in line. Most of the people in line were young men giving him treatments, which really disgusted me. But when I finally got up there I just stared at him, the first thing he said to me was that I was very pretty, so I started crying like the girl that I am. He held my hands and just smiled at me, and I told him that Pretty Woman was my favorite movie and thanked him for making it and told him that I wanted to be an actress, so he signed my book "Andrea a very Pretty Woman here's hoping you Happy Days as an actress." that made me cry as well:) His daughter Lori was also very sweet which just proves what a great dad he is as well.
As for the book, of course it's fabulous! You get to learn behind the scenes info on, of course Pretty Woman, but all his other shows and movies as well. His sense of humor cracks me up, especially when he overheard someone talking about Exit To Eden saying "That movie was so bad he doesn't deserve to be Penny Marshalls father!" I laughed SOO hard at that. Not to mention that you can't help but love a director who thanks his wife at the end of every one of his films.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the ends and outs of the entertainment industry from a vetern who knows what he's talking about!:)
I Want A Sequel.......2000-10-12
A most amazing book about a most amazing man. Follow Mr. Marshall's assertive and generally hilarious approach to breaking into the world of comedy writing - and beyond. The book is a bit of a family affair (forward by sister Penny Marshall, and co-authored by daughter, Lori) chronicling his often hysterical trek from an allergy-laden childhood to the life of a very successful actor, writer, producer, and director. I've had the unique pleasure of meeting this man in person, and he truly is as determined, grounded and compassionate a man as this book reflects...all with that sparkling sense of humor!
A fine person.......1999-11-30
I used to think I was in love with Garry Marshall because of his films and sitcoms, but now it's because he's truly a fine person. Read the book and I think you'll agree. If you're a screenwriter thinking about writing for sitcoms, this should be required reading. I'm more of a spec writer, so I just enjoyed the stories and laughs. This is a story of one of the most successful people in Hollywood and more importantly, a good father, brother, son, and grandfather.
