    Book Description

"A complex bio-mystery about the Kafkaesque machinations of politics." (Aritha van Herk, The Globe and Mail)

In Josef Skvorecký's first novel written in English, the narrator lives in two worlds: the exile world of post-Communist Czechoslovakia, where old feuds, treacherous betrayals, and friendships that have lasted through wars, occupations, and revolutions survive; and the fatuously self-congratulatory comfortable world of a Canadian university, in which grave attention is given to matters such as whether a certain male professor has left his office door open wide enough while interviewing a female student.

Murder suddenly intrudes upon both of these worlds. One features a young female sleuth, a college beauty queen, professional jealousies, and a neat conclusion. The other is a tragedy caused by evil social forces, in which a web of lies works insidiously to entangle Sidonia, who is a publisher of suppressed books and the narrator's wife.

A brilliantly stylish tour de force in which the bright, sarcastic comedy of one tale sharply contrasts with the dark, elegiac bitterness of the other, Two Murders in My Double Life confirms Skvorecký's reputation as one of our most versatile, engaging, and compassionate writers.

          Book Description

In the Highlands of the Middle Kingdoms, where witches and warlords vie for power, a warrior-priestess named Artesia fights for her King against the rules of rival citadels. The Highlands of Daradja are dotted with ancient citadels and castles, held by petty kings and clans that war against each other and the brigand bands that plague the bleak mountains and valleys. Artesia, once a concubine to King Branimir of the Citadel of Dara Dess, has in time risen to become one of his chief war captains; a priestess to dread goddesses; and a magician like her mother once was, controlling warlike spirits. She and her captains carry the cause of their King against his enemies in the field, but afraid of her growing power, her King betrays her and takes new allies: knights from the neighboring Middle Kingdoms, who follow a foreign god, the Divine King, and persecute witches. And in the middle of betrayal and tragedy comes word that the Middle Kingdoms have been invaded by an ancient enemy to them all, the Empire of Thessid-Gola...

5 out of 5 stars Compelling, Detailed, Beautiful!.......2006-06-12

Mark Smylie's Artesia is the perfect combination of compelling lead character, richly detailed setting and absolutely beautiful artwork that marks the best epic fantasy tales.

I picked up Artesia: Besieged #1 (the first chapter of what will be the Fourth Book of Dooms) on a lark last week, having enjoyed several of the other titles Smylie's Archaia Studio Press has recently released -- The Lone and Level Sands, Robotika and Mouse Guard -- and was totally captivated by it. I bought this last week and devoured it on the train ride home, not the least bit concerned about anyone catching a glimpse of the not-so-occasional panel of nudity (male and female, including full frontal) because the presentation is so clearly artistic, and the overall tone of the series is refreshingly mature. Even my wife noted the beautiful artwork while flipping through it briefly, especially impressed with Artesia herself.

If you enjoy the fantasy genre at all, then you should give Artesia a look-see, because Smylie has created an immersive world that will absolutely suck you in. There's even a role playing game based on it, the highly regarded Artesia: Adventures In The Known World.

5 out of 5 stars Bold, complex, and stirring!.......2004-06-01

Perhaps "complex" should have been listed first in the title. I first read Artesia in the singles format, waiting a month or more for each issue to come out. The story was so complex, the characters so numerous, that I found it difficult to follow. I loved the art, though... and each issue left me intrigued to continue buying it. Once all six issues had been released, I read them together and things became more clear: characters stood out, I began remembering what they looked like. On the third read (the trade paperback version, which I'm reviewing here), I was very comfortable with the material and enjoyed it immensely. I was able to find depth and meaning on several layers, with each read showing me more than I had caught previously.

For the story and setting, I originally thought that this series reminded me of the movie Braveheart. Certainly, the setting is a fantasy world that is similar to the Middle Ages. Power is obtained, and kept, through force. This translates to lots of medieval combat, which personally, is not my forte. But on further reads, things became clearer and I started picking up on the politics, magic/religion, and spirituality of the series. Artesia herself is a strong female character, and yet sensual when she wants to be. The magic is low key, consisting mostly of blessings and runes/sigils, and not pyrotechnics. This is obviously not Dungeons & Dragons.

The writing is intelligent, and it's here that I really began to enjoy the book. Characters are written with motives, not as good or evil. In Artesia's fully-developed world, there is political conflict not only due to physical boundaries (such as land disputes, or relations with other kingdoms), but also due to belief systems (old beliefs vs. newer ones). Characters plot and scheme and it leaves me with the feelings that this could easily be real.

Visually, I immediately loved the painted landscapes and the details of the character's armor and heraldry. It is simply beautiful and amazing. I can't imagine what it takes to draw & paint such art. The more I became familiar with the characters, the more I appreciated the way the faces & bodies of the characters were drawn as well. (Originally, I thought their features only mediocre.) I also appreciate the way magic effcts are handled; I almost didn't notice them.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys "realistic" fantasy novels, as this is as close as you can get to a novel and yet remain a work of graphical fiction. If you like medieval warfare, there is plenty for you here; if you like the scheming and politics of kings & queens, then you'll also be happy. Artesia is a book you can read several times and find new things each time.

4 out of 5 stars Original and captivating........2004-05-22

It's really hard to take this book on its own, being that's it's intended to be part of a 22-book series (which, by now, has seen 3 books finished). Smylie's art obviously evolves during the series, starting with pencils and ending with a combination of (more) watercolors and (less) pencils. Truthfully, the art is not the book's strongest feature, though most of it stands above the majority of today's titles. Additionally, it's obvious Smylie has put in a lot of work researching armor, weapons, etc.

It's the world that captivates though. Smylie has come up with a mythology at once original and familiar to anyone with passing knowledge of the Celtic and Judeo-Christian religions. As the story progresses (and this becomes more evident when one reads the second and third books after this one), one also gets to travel through the broader world Smylie has constructed. You get to see different, realistic cultures--many reminiscent of our own--with different (and often conflicting) views on life and morality.

There are "good" guys and "bad" guys, but, mercifully, Smylie avoids the cliche generalization of "good" and "bad" countries, focusing instead on individual virtue, honor, and merits. Artesia herself is larger than life to the Daradjans allied to her, but is in turn viewed as less than virtuous to their neighbors.

Best of all, the book is written intelligently. The dialogue is layed out in the same way that people speak. The characters assume that you have become familiar enough with them that (after their introduction) they don't necessarily exclaim each others' names every other sentence. Also, the author assumes that you read the nice essays on the mythos, history, religion, etc., so that when a character invokes a deity or a historical figure, he does so in a matter befitting his person, and not in a way that obviously caters to an invisible audience.

I would reccommend this book to someone who wants to invest some time in following a long-lasting story. If you are not familiar at all with Artesia, the collected trade paperbacks are a great way to catch up and to read the story as I truly think they were meant to be. Unless this is definitely not your cup of tea (and I don't think you'd be dropping $25 if this was the case), you'll probably find yourself waiting for the next collection to arrive as well.

A trully engrossing read and well worth the money.

          4 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2003-12-28

Mark Smylie does what few in fantasy dare. He builds a world, peoples it with well rounded characters, ditches the stereotypes, creates economies, religions, political structures, and myths. What he doesn't do is offer up hack-work fantasy. You feel that the world and the people that live there have a purpose and a life beyond the page. This is no lifeless, racially pure, pseudo-historical, Tolkien wanna-bee. You want that find yourself 100 on the shelves right know. The writing is solid, and doesn't draw attention to itself with hipster, overly heavy, staccato Bendis-nonsense.

          1 out of 5 stars Over hyped........2003-12-05

The story is banal, and lacks the epic scope of Tolkien, the fantastic satire of Peake, the achingly perceptive commentary on the human condition of Lewis, and the joi de vivre of ER Eddison.
We're plunged headlong into the middle of the story with no real sense of who the characters are and what their purposes are. People are introduced left and right and then either disappear off stage or merely serve as foils to the heroine Artesia. We never get a sense of how she achieved her following, and what actions on Artesia's part provoked her enemies. The heroine herself is 2 dimensional, and something of an "author's darling." She's beautiful, prophetic, blessed by the gods, strong as any man, an excellent Machiavellian commander, and lover. Anyone who goes against her is usually either a chauvinist, or power hungry. There are no internal conflicts within her of any particular substance, as they have no impact on her actions, or her behavior.
She has no faults, and as the series progresses the reader is well aware that little if nothing can harm her for long.
Thus, while the art is fairly unique if flawed at this stage, the story holds no real surprises. The deus ex machina ending is also something of a let down as Artesia places herself in a foolish situation only to be bailed out by others.
A word about the world building: while it seems superficially extensive it really isn't. The author attempts to inject it with cultural nuances like differing languages but it isn't quite executed properly as it seems more like a mishmash of english and corrupted latin than something a person with a real understanding of language would come up with.
The biggest factor seems to be whose society is egalitarian and which isn't.
The gender dichotomy is also inexplicable. Perhaps its just my bias, but there doesn't seem to be a reason why the old religion would foster an egalitarian society when its cousin faiths don't. Most, agricultural societies irrespective of religion have always been skewed towards a male hegemony. Economy plays a bigger role for women than religion does in terms of rights. In other words, I wish the author would have highlighted the circumstances that allowed Artesia's side of the world to be so egalitarian.

          5 out of 5 stars A really good book!.......2005-11-17

Though this book is fairly old for science fiction it is still very relevant. As well written as Card's Homecoming series. Lanik Mueller is a royal member of the Muellers, a nation on the planet Treason. The Muellers have the ability to instantly heal themselves, making them incredibly difficult to kill. Lanik becomes an outcast to the Muellers when his abilities mutate and make him a freak. He is forced to leave by his father and go on a mission to other nations that are warring with the Muellers.

Lanik discovers that the Muellers are not the only nation with unique abilities. Virtually, everywhere he travels he finds a people with a different ability and kind of like in a video game, he learns how to incorporate each of those powers into himself and starts to become a type of Superman.

He goes on to learn that there is a group of usurpers that are really ruling things and know all the secrets of planet Treason. Lanik must decide if he wants to risk everything he has learned to face up to the usurpers and restore Treason back to the people.

I loved this book from cover to cover and Card continues to amaze me as one of the best authors of our generation.

5 out of 5 stars Twisted, Different, and a Compelling Read.......2004-11-11

Obviously written early in his career, this story really stands apart from much of OSC's work. It really is a fascinating read, although sometimes dark and a little graphic -- but it would make an excellent sci-fi movie. The hero of the story is a rad-regen, meaning his family has the ability to regenerate body parts (if a finger is cut off, it grows back), however he cannot control his growth as puberty hits, and he has extra limbs and internals growing all over the place. Talk about a bad day. He becomes an outcast, and wanders this planet of outcasts looking for purpose and a future. The ancestors of the planet's inhabitants were outcasts from earth, sent here for their crimes - the planet has no natural resources for them to escape - and hence is called Planet Treason.
A great adventure, and a fun read. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great book- but it should be noted that...........2000-03-16

I loved this book. I've read Treason (Revised) and A Planet Called Treason (Original). It should be noted that the original copy (A Planet Called Treason) labeled the "Inkers" as "Niggers". This was changed in later versions. I would recommend the revised version, Treason, as it contains the more appropriate name for these characters.

          5 out of 5 stars beyond Sci-Fi.......1999-12-22

as stated in the other reveiws, the plot of this book is very interesting and imaginative but the aspects of the book that i enjoied were first that the character lanik is a character modeled after an average teenager. all of his actions are based on that of a young adult and thus it shows how one matures over time and when exposed to various stimuli. The second aspect of the novel that i enjoied was the brilliant way in which card depicted the difference between the following catagories of actions that are treason dissent and freedom. The most prominante way in which he portrays this is with the planet treason being orbited by its two moons dissent and freedom. card also portrays this theme or idea in ay least ten different manifestations. Other than this the book was very descriptive and in other words one of those books you can't put down until your done and after that you feel remorse that it is over.

4 out of 5 stars One of the most imaginative adventure stories I've ever read.......1999-07-28

Published in 1978, this was Orson Scott Card's second novel (his fourth book to be published). It faded out of print, then Card made some major revisions/rewrites and republished it in 1988 under a different title. I have not read the revised version, simply titled TREASON, but it is supposed to be a complete overhaul with 10% new material.

As Card himself has acknowledged, A Planet Called Treason is amateurish. There is no question Card has improved his tone, pacing, character development, and storylines over the last twenty years. But this story is still one of the most imaginative I have ever read, despite the structural flaws. This is the kind of wild, no-holds-barred fantasy every 10-year old boy dreams about, but few adults have the talent to write (Orson Scott Card and George Lucas come to mind). This novel illustrates why I enjoy OSC so much - even when he's not in peak form, his books are still too fun to put down.

One note about different versions: There are differences between the Dell paperback and the hardback edition (at least, the Book Club edition I own). First, the map included on page 1 is much more detailed in the paperback version than the hardcover. Second, I think there are some minor editorial revisions in the paperback. I happened to notice, when I picked up the hardcover to find where I left off in the paperback, the last sentence of Chapter 10 was changed; I have no idea why this was done or if any other alterations were made

                Book Description

Drawing on insights from psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, theology, and missiology, as well as on interviews with converts from disparate backgrounds, Lewis Rambo provides a critique and evaluation of religious conversion throughout the world. He considers various theories of conversion, examines the role of cultural and social factors in the conversion process, and describes how different religions and disciplines view conversion.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Adequate, without breathtaking revelations........2001-10-17

Lewis Rambo presents chapters on various aspects of religious conversion, such as social context, religious experience, apostasy, and missionaries. Although he tries to cover many kinds of conversion, inluding intensifying commitment to neglected religious practices, he seems pre-occupied with conversion to monotheistic religions in colonial situations and modern American new religions. He strives to avoid controversy and say as little as possible of significance. For all that, his book is an adequate overview. The main disappointment with his book is the scarcity of studies and examples cited.

Personally, I would rather study conversion from the wider perspectives of general changes in religious experiences, commitments, and practices in many cultures. Reading this book, I concluded that the notion of conversion is meaningless in religious studies, one more projection from limited Western experiences onto inappropriate situations in other contexts. In short, I believe the topic is larger than Rambo's coverage. Yet his scholarship, methods and writing are adequate.

5 out of 5 stars It's Easy to Succeed With the Recipes.......2001-01-30

Unlike some exotic cookbooks, this one is simple to use, and immediately banishes any fear of the unknown realms it leads one through. The recipes are practical and turn out as they should. They are clearly written, not overwhelming and the format and photos really help readers to succeed, thus making the book practical rather than a coffeetable book.

The author blends flavors in delectable ways, for example the cardammon and coconut ice-cream recipe sounded inedible to me, but the actual icecream was so delicious that I have had many requests for it. (Special gadgets and ice-cream makers were not called for in this recipe, which made it accessible to cooks with basic kitchen tools.)

5 out of 5 stars New and exotic.......2000-01-07

This book contains some really original and exotic recipes. The ones I've tried are really good. This book however is really for those who like to cook a lot and also like to try out something new. Those who are beginner vegetarians, or looking for some basic, simple recipes should look elsewhere.

The synopsis says that Scott is the only anually published worldwide stamp catalog. There are at least 3 more Michel in German, Yvert and tellier in French, and Stanley Gibbons in English. I would rate Stanley gibbons and Michel much higher. they give more details, and more information. For American Stamps Scott is the best though. if you collect British Colonies, you will need Stanley Gibbons. To compare the four, you have to look at a country like Afghanistan, and there you will see that the amount of information from Gibbons and Michel is much greater. They will be harder to buy though.

I found this book very disappointing. I failed to read the description before I purchased this book. I didn't realize it was only 18 pages for $7.50. IN my opinion it is not worth that amount of money. Especially when you add 3.99 for S&H.
And to me, the designs were not that great.

Susan Allen did it again! Just when I thought I had found the end of the rainbow with her first book of crocheted Christmas ornament covers, she produced another book filled with new designs to cover Christmas balls. Like her first book, this one features festive photos of the finished ornaments and very easy to follow instructions to reproduce the ornaments for yourself. Her innovative method for covering the ornaments makes it easy to create lots of new Christmas decorations in no time.

This book is is a portable size ready to slip into your craft bag to take with you anywhere. You'll be ready to sneak in a few more crochet stitches wherever you go. The compliments I receive on the finished ornaments keeps me crocheting more! You'll find this book to be a wonderful addition to your collection.

Great book with beautiful results. I saw a great idea online and tried it with some of these patterns. Make them without the ball inside, starch them (VERY heavily, don't dilute the starch), insert a deflated balloon, inflate inside ornament, let dry completely, pop and remove balloon. You now have a lace only ornament.

I purchased both of Susan Allen's Crocheted Christmas Cover books and was truly pleased with them. I enjoy many types of crafts, but especially crochet, so when I started working on her patterns, and saw how quickly they made up it was a real treat! I especially enjoy the gasps of pleasure and awe that I receive from family and friends when I show off my finished ornaments. They're such a treasure and a great way to make a few extra dollars during the holidays. They can also be an easy but special gift for your 'long list' of friends and co-workers. I can't wait to start my batch for Christmas 2001. Thanks Susan!

From the minute I received Susan Allen's 1st book of crochet patterns to cover ordinary Christmas balls with a crocheted cover in metallic thread, I couldn't wait to get started. Not only was I fascinated with "the look" of the metallic crocheted thread, but her clever way to cover the Christmas balls made the task go lightning quick. The patterns are easy to follow and the color photos are so glittery and festive.

I had tried other ornament cover patterns before, but they were cumbersome once you had to insert the ornament. But those days are over since these patterns use a very innovative way to cover ornaments. There are a variety of patterns to follow in this book, so you can have fun creating different color combinations. I gave some of my crocheted ornaments to a friend wrapped up in a Christmas basket this year and she said she didn't have the heart to put them away after the holidays because of their beauty!

If you love to crochet as I do, you will find this book to be a valuable addition to your collection of patterns.

I have bought both of susans books. They are wonderful !!! The instructions are very easy to follow. They make up beautifully. I also bought her yarn. This makes them sparkle so bright. My family and friends were delighted with the ones I made for them. I can't say enough about these books. If she writes more I will be first in line to buy them. Thanks susan for such great books. Keep them coming!!! Pam P.

                                                Book Description

In 1960 the author, a hotshot documentary filmmaker, found himself impatiently walking out of a waiting room for a meeting with the executive producer of ABC's Close-Up. It took him about three New York blocks to realize he was making a huge mistake, so he returned and a year later was nominated for an Emmy for his work on Close-Up. Locations all around the world were the backdrops for Webster's films. He met many of the best-known people of the 1960s and 1970s-John F. Kennedy, Orson Welles, Pope John XXIII, Elizabeth Taylor-and won many awards, including seven Emmy nominations and a first prize at the Berlin International Television Film Festival.
