5 out of 5 stars Lyrical but Anguished.......2005-08-02

Abdelrahman Munif's novels are brilliantly written and, in my opinion, offer the same satisfactions as the novels of Gogol and Dostoyevsky; in this particular novel, the tone is much more lyrical and wistful, and the characters behave with more heroic motives, than in "Cities of Salt" (tragic) or "The Trench" (satirical). This describes the series of struggles for control of the soon-to-be Sultanate of Mooran, both within the [Saudi-modelled] royal house, and among rival clans.

Set in the 1920's, when the fate of the Arabian Peninsula was uncertain, and the role of the British Foreign & Colonial Office was potentially decisive, this novel pays special attention to the relationship between Khureybit and Hamilton. Hamiton, incidentally, is based on Harry St. John Bridger Philby (or Jack Philby, father of Kim Philby; Wikipedia has an excellent write-up on him). The tension between Hamilton's concerns about the growing corruption in the Mooran ruling house, and his loyalty to Khureybit, are sensitively and carefully portrayed.

4 out of 5 stars THERE IS NO MACRA!.......2001-11-30

Neat little Dr. Who story. Not one of the best. Gets four stars because of the work BBC has put into repackaging these stories with linking narration. I enjoyed hearing Ben and Polly since there are so few existing stories with them in it. It's a pretty two dimensional plot which is characterisitc of most of the Patrick Troughton "ooo look at the scarey monster" stories. Basically it's about a brainwashed culture that is dominated by ugly crab creatures that would probably be yummy with some garlic butter or tartar sauce. If you're a who fan, get it.

4 out of 5 stars Good story crawls out of BBC's vaults.......2001-09-02

The BBC, in the days before home video, decided that some of its programs were no longer required in its archives. In a somewhat unsystematic purging, many classics were consigned to the flames, including several Doctor Who stories. Fortunately, some fans of the series had made their own audio recordings, and these (following a thorough re-mastering by the BBC) are being released.

'The Macra Terror' is one of these releases. The story features a human colony under siege from a race of monsters - not an unusual description of a Patrick Troughton story. What makes this story unique is the nature of the colony - set up like an archetypical British holiday camp, the enforced bon hommie and cheerful tunes cast it in a different light. (This kind of society was revisited some 21 years later in the Sylvester McCoy story 'The Happiness Patrol'.)

The comparatively recent addition of Jamie to the TARDIS crew mean that all three companions (the other two being Ben and Polly) have smaller roles than might be desirable. The Doctor is very much on centre stage in this story, and Pat Troughton is well in his stride in the part.

Linking narration is by Colin Baker, who played the Doctor's sixth incarnation, and is surprisingly subdued given Baker's portrayal of the Doctor. The visual aspects of the show would probably added quite a bit to the enjoyment of the show (particularly in setting the holiday camp tone), but based on stills the appearance of the Macra is probably not truly missed.

The story is quite strong and not unduly tied in to the shows ongoing history, so is suitable for both fans and casual listeners.

1 out of 5 stars Doctor Who: The Macra Terror.......2001-11-08

Few of these Doctor Who novelisations can be called litery masterpieces , in fact some of them are just downright bad , but for me THE MACRA TERROR is almost certainly the worst of the whole range. What`s wrong with it ? Allegedly the televised story the novel is adapted from is " a classic " , but reading this bland novelisation left me underwhelmed . It lacks anything resembling atmosphere or charachterisation. In fact it`s just like reading a script with a few brief visual descriptions thrown in. I know the Target series of Doctor Who novelisations are aimed at children but that`s no excuse for not thrilling the reader. Tedious in the extreme

3 out of 5 stars OK, but the soundtrack is better.......2000-10-20

This is Ian Stuart Black's novelisation of his own script. And not a bad story, as it turns out.

The TARDIS arrives in the "far future" on a colony world, which seems based on the concept of English holiday camps. The fact that they meet one of the colonists, who claims that the colony is being invaded by monsters, before he is imprisoned for medical treatment casts some doubt on the claims that everything is just peachy keen.

The activities of the invaders are more invidious than many in the series, and the enforced cheerfulness of the colony mean that the travellers have a hard time convincing people that the monsters do exist. Especially after Ben falls under the influence of the invaders...

While this adaptation is quite solid, what is lacking is the atmosphere of the colony. The BBC have long since destroyed the original TV serial, but its sound track has been released on both cassette and CD. For my money, the audio version is better than this adaptation.

In a somewhat unsystematic purging, many classics were consigned to the flames, including several Doctor Who stories. Fortunately, some fans of the series had made their own audio recordings, and these (following a thorough re-mastering by the BBC) are being released.

"The Macra Terror" is one of these releases. The story features a human colony under siege from a race of monsters - not an unusual description of a Patrick Troughton story. What makes this story unique is the nature of the colony - set up like an archetypical British holiday camp, the enforced bon hommie and cheerful tunes cast it in a different light...

The story is quite strong and not unduly tied in to the shows ongoing history, so is suitable for both fans and casual listeners...

                          Book Description

Teaching Spirits offers a thematic approach to Native American religious traditions. Through years of living with and learning about Native traditions across the continent, Joseph Epes Brown learned firsthand of the great diversity of the North American Indian cultures. Yet within this great multiplicity, he also noticed certain common themes that resonate within many Native traditions. These themes include a shared sense of time as cyclical rather than linear, a belief that landscapes are inhabited by spirits, a rich oral tradition, visual arts that emphasize the process of creation, a reciprocal relationship with the natural world, and the rituals that tie these themes together. Brown illustrates each of these themes with in-depth explorations of specific native cultures including Lakota, Navajo, Apache, Koyukon, and Ojibwe. Brown was one of the first scholars to recognize that Native religions-rather than being relics of the past-are vital traditions that tribal members shape and adapt to meet both timeless and contemporary needs. Teaching Spirits reflects this view, using examples from the present as well as the past. For instance, when writing about Plains rituals, he describes not only building an impromptu sweat lodge in a Denver hotel room with Black Elk in the 1940s, but also the struggles of present-day Crow tribal members to balance Sun Dances and vision quests with nine-to-five jobs. In this groundbreaking work, Brown suggests that Native American traditions demonstrate how all components of a culture can be interconnected-how the presence of the sacred can permeate all lifeways to such a degree that what we call religion is integrated into all of life's activities. Throughout the book, Brown draws on his extensive personal experience with Black Elk, who came to symbolize for many the richness of the imperiled native cultures. This volume brings to life the themes that resonate at the heart of Native American religious traditions.

4 out of 5 stars An informative book.......2003-09-12

I found this book a fascinating, especially for a required college textbook. In his introductary chapter, he is redundant and tries to give the air the Native American religions are much more full of meaning than Western European religions. I was glad to see the rest of the book didn't make such ethnocentric and blanketed statements.

The rest of the book is a quick overview of Native American religion. It explains in a very easy manner about the way they live and the differences in their cultures, and provides various examples and humorous stories to demonstrate Brown's findings.

In closing, I think this book is a must have for any anthropologist.

On their travels across the United States, photographers Steve Gross and Sue Daley were impressed by the many homeowners they found who had created homes "full of character and comfort" by lovingly combining their passion for the past with "modern humor, ease, and convenience." The two were so impressed that they decided to photograph the homes--some 20 in all--in order to share this source of secret inspiration with others. The homes in At Home with the Past: How the Love of Old Things Creates Beautiful Interiors reach across a "wide variety of styles and budgets," making this perfect melding of the past and present affordable for all--from a cozy guest cottage stuffed to the rafters with yard-sale finds and a dilapidated Greek revival house full of the owner's idiosyncratic style, to a Moorish fantasy hideaway complete with flea-market Persian rugs and a "Nifty '50s" cabin in the Catskills. While advice from the individual homeowners is interesting and useful (try spicing up your space with fabric--a traditional pieced quilt can magically become a charming table-topper), it's the magnificent full-color photographs of the homes that will truly inspire those "seeking to re-create the beauty of the old in order to imbue their surroundings with a true sense of place."

                                Book Description

How can you bring the beauty and grace of the past into your own home? The rich, idiosyncratic aura of bygone days evokes a sense of roots--whether grand or modest, playful or serious--that offers comfort, ease, and, above all, warmth. It is this ambiance of character and charm that Steve Gross and Sue Daley have captured so stunningly in At Home with the Past. Filled with more than 150 glorious full-color photographs, this sumptuous book showcases twenty homes whose owners have re-created the best of the past while mixing in contemporary conveniences and the sparkle of modern wit.

Steve Gross and Sue Daley exhibit a genius for uncovering extraordinary homes all across the country. Some of their finds are luxurious, some are genuinely old, but many are modest houses and apartments that have been decorated and furnished with more imagination than money. Whether it's a rustic cabin in New Mexico, a Long Island garage turned into a guest cottage, a rundown Savannah townhouse, or a Manhattan loft filled with flea market finds, these are homes that range across a wide variety of styles and budgets. The owners explain how they came to make their choices and share with readers a multitude of decorating tips and insights that offer both guidance and inspiration. With its wealth of exquisite photographs, At Home with the Past is a visual feast for anyone seeking to re-create the beauty of the old in order to imbue their surroundings with a true sense of place.

4 out of 5 stars Apartment Buyer With a Tight Budget.......2000-08-09

My husband and I are buying our first apartment so I'm always looking for inspiration. After paging through countless decorating books I knew this was the one I wanted to own. Each of the 20 homes showcased exemplifies personality over cookie-cutter design concepts, each shows old objects used in unexpected ways, and finally, and maybe most importantly, the houses and apartments are intensely personal. You know people actually live there. From a railroad apartment to a renovated church, At Home With the Past consistently inspires me to follow my instincts and not the dictates of the style du jour. The clincher for me, however, is that anyone with an eye for the unexpected beauty in flea market finds or even curbside freebies can achieve a great look with a small budget. Another point to remember is that the furnishings and decorative items were acquired over time, which provides an added depth. As the personality of the owner changes and grows, so does her taste. It takes time to make a house (or an apartment) a home.

2 out of 5 stars Not too impressed.......2000-05-10

I received this book as a gift as I am a great bargin hunter and garage sale person. I'm afraid this book was a disappointment as it showed arty photos of shabby old houses with shabby old furniture. Most people buy old things to preserve them and blend them in with their everyday life, not to accumulate a houseful of tatty old "stuff" and hope it is interpreted as the popular "shabby chic". The photography in the book is very good however.

                                5 out of 5 stars This is a mind-blowing work of art........1998-09-18

I bought this because I am a fan of their first book, OLD HOUSES, and this was such a refreshing surprise to see a repeat with a twist. What a treat to see these imaginative interiors with great use of color, objects and psychedelics.

Maybe someday the magazines will catch up to their way hip aesthetic. Can't wait to see what this rad photographer duo is going to surprise us with next.

                                  Book Description

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of House & Garden, this fully illustrated book presents important contemporary decorating trends in stunning homes.

From one-room makeovers to complete renovations, home-decorating projects are flourishing across the country. House & Garden Book of Style explores seven of today's most popular looks, including the rustic charm of Country Luxe, the urban sophistication of New International, and the cross-cultural eclecticism of Bohemian Chic. Interweaving the stories of homeowners and the insights of professional decorators, each chapter features full-color pictures of four to six residences that typify the style, and the do's and don'ts of getting a style right.

The first book from House & Garden in more than 15 years, this is an irresistible combination of inspiration, innovative ideas, and practical know-how.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A handsome volume from a classic magazine.......2002-08-27

Dominique Browning, editor of HOUSE & GARDEN magazine, has a triumph on her hands with "House & Garden Book of Style." HOUSE & GARDEN has long been the sophisticated cousin to the more accessible HOUSE BEAUTIFUL, and that chicness is in evidence here. The HOUSE & GARDEN cool austerity--sometimes sacrificing warmth for hard-edged style, but many times not--is amply displayed throughout.

The book covers a panoply of styles, from "Country Luxe" to "New International" to "Mid-Century Modern" and beyond. The shabby warmth of English-inspired rooms is covered, as is the prissier French look--but as HOUSE & GARDEN so often does, there is almost always a visual wrench thrown into the works to get your attention and make you rethink your assumptions about a particular genre. Perfectly making the point is the photograph on p. 25, which shows an 18th-century settee decorously covered in a taupe damask, above which hangs what appears to be a piece of Spirograph art made with screamingly bright primary oil paints. The effect is jarring--but it works.

The thinking which goes into the decoration of these rooms is explored just as deeply as the looks themselves. Although photographs take up most of the room--as they should, since this is a case when a picture telling a thousand words is not only desirable, but necessary for instructing the reader--the text is informative and enlightening. The end result is that these profoundly individual rooms make their own cases, and what beautiful cases they make.
