A good introduction to V.S. Naipaul........2004-08-27
If you're new to V.S. Naipaul and want to get acquainted with his work, both fiction and non-fiction, look no further; this is the book for you.
Born and raised in Trinidad of Indian ancestry in 1932 Naipaul writes superbly on the plight of the post-colonial peoples and nations. He has since written 27 books of which seven short excerpts are included in this anthology.
I was delighted that one of his most memorable and flawed characters is included: Mr. Mohan Biswas of THE HOUSE FOR MR. BISWAS that is my favorite Naipaul book. In the selection from THE ENIGMA OF ARRIVAL Naipaul demonstrates his art of expertly and convincingly describing the physical surrounding of the English countryside. Also included are several excerpts from his non-fiction books that enable one to read a wide gamut of his themes.
There is no doubt that this compilation could have been longer; 190 large font pages undermine the scope of this talented writer. Regardless, it's a good start for readers who are just becoming acquainted with V.S. Naipaul.

This is my first introduction to VS Naipaul's work. This collection contains some segments from his novels as well as essays he's collected in various volumes. Regarding his fiction, I think it's very good--especially if you like Indian writing (which I love). Of his essays in his edition, I think Jasmine is my favorite--all because of the last few paragraphs.
Naipaul's set-up always leads to perfect execution, though, at times, elements of his writing seemed overblown, overembellished. His essay on Mobutu and the first half of Jack's Garden struggled in keeping my attention, though, both had wonderful themes once finished.
This seems to be a nice study of his work. The balance between fiction and non-fiction was consistent and welcome.

a good primer on old testament biblical theology.......2005-02-13
This book is part of the "Toward" series that Kaiser has written. He takes somewhat of a middle road between dispensationalism and covenant theology by his promise-fulfillment method. The book has 3 parts: an overview of the history of OT theology, an overview of the "promise" concept in OT theology and thirdly an overview of how to apply the OT today.
Basically this book would make an excellent textbook for an introduction to Old Testament biblical theology. One weakness is his strange insistence that Evangelicals must use higher-criticism (pg. 75), albeit in a modified way. Also, his insistence that "promise" is the dominant over-arching theme of the OT is somewhat weak as well. Though somewhat dated in the area of current trends in OT biblical theology, it is an excellent exposure to important questions and issues.

Love this cookbook.......2000-12-12
This is a great book for someone like me who wants to make nice meals but doesn't have a lot of time. Most recipes are very easy and yet very elegant in their presentation. Book includes preparation and cooking time so it's easy to make sure everything's done at the same moment! My favorites include the Scallops with Black Bean Sauce, and the Polenta Tart. Great for beginners and/or busy people!

Recipes That Are Too Easy To Be So Good!.......1996-09-02
The ingredient lists you'll find in these recipes won't send you scurrying to the store, armed with a legal pad, in search of dozens of esoteric items missing from your cupboard or refrigerator. Nor will your kitchen be piled high with dirty pots and plans to clean after the cooking is done. But you will find yourself saying, after dinner, "how could that have been sooo good...and so easy!"
The distinguishing feature of this cookbook seems to be that it achieves interesting, flavorful, "gourmet" tastes and smells with recipes that are seldom more complicated than those you'd find on the side of a can or a boxtop. That's not to suggest you'll get away from having to pick up a fresh fruit, vegetable, or herb now and then. There are no dishes here that just call for the proverbial "casserole dish, can of mushroom soup, and something to pour it over." But if you're motivated to do anything more than ordering out, you could probably put a delicious dish on the table faster than Dominoes could deliver a pizza ... even if you did have to make a quick trip to the store for that bunch of fresh cilantro!

Terrific recipes in all categories. Some simple and some moderately complex. Many make for fun and impressive entertaining.
Paced for a new cook with handy guidelines such as time to allow for preparation through serving. Experienced cooks will find some wonderful recipes that can be done without elaborate effort. Also a great set up guide for outfitting a first kitchen and pantry.
We so found this made a great gift for new graduates and first housewarmings

All the songs from Appetite for Destruction, with detailed transcriptions, song notes and an introduction at the face of the book, lyrics, and more! I also bought THE STYLES AND TECHNIQUES OF SLASH, which was a breakdown of some of the songs from Appetite with a bonus CD. Both are recommendable but this is definitely more straightforward. If you want to learn Gn'R, start there. If you're already good at guitar, get this book. It's hard, and takes practice, but the songs are ALL great. Even Think About You is fun to play, and it's my least favorite song on Appetite.
Appetite for Destruction .......2004-11-19
In Appetite for Destruction, Gene writes about how guns and roses emerged from an LA club that legends Van Halen, Motely Cure and poison, also emerged from. Gene gives an excellent point of view of how hard they had it when they first started. He continues to write about how even know they had numerous albums and concerts, the luck for the band, just kept on getting worse. From someone's head getting stumped in ar a mush pit at one of their concerts, to alcohol and drug overdoses.
It talks of how slash tried to over came his drug problems and how Axel had a huge control issue over the band. This band was created of friendship and ruined by greed, corruption, drugs and alcohol. It even tells you secrets of songs and stories of them. I would give it 5 stars.

i thought ''Appetite for Destruction : Bass Guitar'' was reallya great transcription for bass guitar of a great album. i has musicand tab for all the songs. my favorite song is "Sweet Child of Mine" the bass line is modereratly easy and fun to play. i gave it a 5 because it is well written and easy to figure out

i think this is the best book in the world, i didn't buy it, but one of my dad's friends gave it to me. I'm such a fan of GNR, it is not even funny, so i realy enjoyed the book, i can't single out any spot that i like the most, beacause all of it is great

Man this book is such a guilty pleasure for me. I love how Sugerman can weave Rimbaud/Baudelaire, William Blake, William Burroughs, Jim Carroll and Axl Rose. A lot of us were living on the nighttrain to the "Palace of Wisdom" back in 1989. That was my season in hell with GNFR as the soundtrack. Although Axl has revamped them as a karaoke group, it makes you wonder what might have been. Guns and Roses was truly onto something legendary if they didn't implode. But hey wasn't it inevitable. No one in music today is even close to the insanity of pre-illusion Guns. Only the Lizard King's Homer could mythologize the late 1980s of the Sunset Strip. RIP Danny
Doesn't do what it says on the jacket .......2005-11-10
I have to agree with the consensus here. This book is not a useful biography of G&R.
As an intellectual analysis of the cultural significance of rock music in general, with special reference to G&R it's quite a good read, in the manner of an enthusiastic undergraduate media studies essay.
Sugerman's style is amusing at times, but usually for the wrong reasons, (eg his frequently 'creative' grammar and the excruciatingly over the top parallels between Axl and a pantheon of historical and legendary greats from gods to poets.
G&R are a great band, you're unlikely to be reading this or the book unless you agree, as to "undoubtedly the best rock band performing in the World today", I'm not sure I'd put it that strongly, especially as the book was written when the band had actually only produced one album!
Of course we now know that after Appetite for destruction the band survived to record more material. I dont think that hit the same heights again since that brilliant debut. So it would appear that G&R failed to live up to Sugerman's predictions for greatness by either burning out in a blaze of glory or by continuing to achieve increasingly spectacular musical triumphs.

This is the worst book i have ever read on a autobiography of a band. Just rambles on about nothing. Nothing new in this book to learn. This author should change professions.

I would highly recomend that any fan of Guns N'Roses do not buy this book. It is a complete waste of money. The book is boring and pointless. The author just rambles on and on, until you don't even know what he is saying anymore. If you are wanting a good book about Guns N'Roses, this is definately not it.
Carried Away.......2002-07-25
The author of this book gets carried away to say the least. He strays far from actual facts and delves into his crazy theories and parallels of Axl and Slash (forget about the other members in the group) and some ancient figures. It got quite tedious at some points and was not interesting at all. Buy another GnR book!
