Amazing!.......2004-03-23
I can't believe this is Mr. Yancey's first novel. It is like nothing I've ever read before, he weaves a great story. I love how the story is half narrated by a character "outside" the main plot. This second perspective makes it like two stories in one. The only complaint I have is that I had hoped the ending would be a little stronger, but I can't complain that much because it is written realistically. This author has tremendous talent!

I just could not put this book down! I read the whole thing from start to finish in one sitting. This book speaks true about so many things, most importantly love, and its consequences. I highly recommend it!

this is, quite simply, a terrific novel. the book is beautifully written and fun to read. highly engaging plot, steeped in a very romantic southern setting. the characters are well-developed and diverse. the narrative style is very clean and unpretentious. yet this is a very deep book, w/ lots of nuance and subtlety below the surface. this book would be a great choice for book clubs and contemporary literature courses. i think this book will have enduring value.

Yancey develops his characters beautifully in this historic Southern tale. This future classic will keep readers entrigued from beginning to end. Anyone who starts this book will find it truly difficult to forgo reading the rest of it. The novel is fraught with rough characters and mundane sorrows. This author's future success is indubitable.

The summer of 1960 in Homeland, Florida would be hot just based on climate, but for several of the townsfolk, relationships turn even more heated. Seven-year-old Shiny Parker observes the Pastor Ned Jefferies nearly burned alive, but that is nothing to what else happens to him that fateful summer when the Preacher's wife and ten year old daughter Sharon Rose take over the lad's home following the inferno. Because he accidentally sees Sharon-Rose naked, Shiny finds himself engaged to the older woman for compromising her. Even that pales next to eye witnessing a murder.
The engaged couple investigates the suspicious fire and soon finds a link to a two decades old murder. Walter Hughes was accused of raping Miss Mavis and her hero Halley Martin defends her honor by killing the accused. Halley and Mavis exchanged letters over the twenty years while he did hard time. Now he is to be freed and a reckoning is a coming as those who participated in the 1940 homicide are coming together for the final act with Shiny as the audience.
A BURNING IN HOMELAND is a strong southern historical novel that works on several levels because of a powerful cast. In some ways this gothic like tale is more of a character study, but Richard Yancey provides a deep gritty atmosphere with plenty action in a taut story line. Shiny with his woes of the world eases some of the tension with his humorous predicaments yet also keeps the powerful plot moving forward. Fans of mid twentieth century southern gothic will want to read this puissant tale.

Am omnibus collection of three reasonable Robert Jordan Conan pastiches. They try hard to be confusing with Conan publishing, with Chronicles all over the place, and with his name Robert as well, sheesh.
Conan the Magnificent is actually quite a reasonable pastiche. The barbarian runs into a female thief, who bests him before he realises.
Getting into more trouble, he has to leave Shadizar for a while, where he encounters a female noblewoman who likes to hunt with a small retinue.
Some others would like her jewels and other treasures lurk, so there is sword swinging to be done, and an evil sorcerer to top it off.

Conan this time has three women to deal with, although the first, a young nobleman reduced to trying out trulldom is easy, once he finds her employment.
The high priestess of a demon lord he is working for and does not know it is far worse.
Karela the Red Hawk just likes to compare him to any dirty ugly animal she can think of because she likes him so much and doesn't know whether to shag him or stab him.
All this on top of leading a Free Company.

even though robert jordan first captured me with the wheel of time series after book 6 it just all went downhill from there BIGTIME...BUT i must give him his due he sure can write some conan novels!!. jordan is at his best here all of his conan books made me roar with laughter and made me hunt for more... kudos jordan come back to writing conan and forget the WOT series.

This is a great read, it is a beautiful epic whose true force lies in the poignant details of its characters, richly detailed, woven into a wonderful tapestry.
This is one of the best fantasy series, the story is lively and entertaining, the characters are colorful and interesting, and the plot is energetic and spellbinding! The action scenes are much better than what you find in Robert Jordan "Wheel of Time" series, and much more manageable in scope.

Further Chronicles of Conan.......2001-10-02
The original Conan stories were interesting despite Robert Howard's frenetic style. Overwritten as they were, they still evoked unique worlds and sensuous action. Jordan's 're-write' captures the original tone and style (indeed, it seems changed very little from the original). I have not been a fan of audiobooks in general, but found myself listening to tale after tale once I got started. The narrator does a good job of maintaining a sense of adventure without being overtly dramatic. It must have been quite a task keeping track of all those characters. The production is minimal - perhaps it could have used a bit more for ambience - but the recording is clean.
If you like Conan, and like audiobooks, this seems a good buy.
Not bad, not great either........2000-10-14
I read the first story of this collected trilogy and enjoyed it. The first story was "Conan the Magnificant." It was enjoyable. It was nothing special, but it was certainly a competent short story.
I read halfway through the second story collected in this trilogy "Conan the triumphant", and quit.
The reason why is because this story was falling into the same mold of the first one. A competent short fantasy story - but nothing more. Life is to short to spend just on competent short stories. I must move on to other books that will be more enjoyable for me druring my short time on Earth.
One final note on the second story; halfway through the story I could easily tell how it was going to end up. All the plot devices and characters were in place. Reading the last 140 pages would just be witnessing the pieces falling into place to wind up the story.
I will rate this book 3 stars out of 5. This does not achieve the minimum 4 star rating that in my opinion makes a book worthwhile to read.
Skip it unless you like average short fantasy stories about Conan.

You have to read this book!.......2002-03-23
Your children will love this book! My seven and nine year old daughters adore the Superkid Novels--especially this one! As a parent, it's so wonderful to have good, clean, uplifting and interesting books to share with my children. Every SK novel is a treasure. We are always so excited for the next one to come out. Caged Rivalry is my 9-year-old's 'new favorite.' It is action-packed from beginning to end. Truly, it's a must read!!

Great Techniques.......2004-11-05
I used the techniques from one chapter to quickly recover from a fall on concrete, where I hit my head, and a personal sorrow. I handled the physical aspects separately from the fall and on the memory of both was able to resolve the pain and sorrow so now I can think about it easily--as easily as normal memories. Thank you, L. Ron Hubbard. It works. Get it. Try it. Use it.
Not for the faint of heart.......2004-04-13
This book is very helpful but not necessarily a walk in the park to use. It's all about weeding through various things that make life difficult and how you can work your way to a better state of mind. You have to be willing to work for it and if you follow the steps in the book, you get amazing results. If you don't do what it says in the book or only do it half-heartedly, you really don't get much out of it. I give 5 stars because it really does deliver. In using the book, sometimes you have to examine things about yourself that aren't so easy to face. Once you push through those things using the book, it's pretty beneficial.

This book is for those who are in the need of change in their lives. It isn't about money; it isn't about winning friends and influencing people. It is a self-help book for those people who want to change the conditions of their life by viewing their goals and problems and past situations that relate. It gets a person better acquainted with himself.
It was written many years ago, but the techniques work IF one reads the book throughally and applies each step. The author is deceased, and the book is not published by the author but by the
LRH Library which is run by the Religious Technology Center which is a [type of religion]corporation.
There are many references in the book where you can go for further services--however, you might search out alternatives on the Internet, because there are individuals in what is called the "FreeZone" who can deliver services, too. If reading this book makes you want "more" then shop around.
In this Handbook for Preclears the dynamic principle of existence, which is "survive" is introduced. It is an important datum, because it is what all things have in common...it is the common demonator of existence. Of course, there are degrees of survival from bare to successful, but the datum gives one a way to look at things.
That isn't the only datum that is useful in this book. It isn't a good book for someone who just skims the reading material and doesn't throughally apply the exercises. That is why I rate it a 4 star instead of 5--...

Living in the Los Angeles area, I've been a long-time customer of the Elixir store in West Hollywood. There is no place like it, with licensed herbalists helping customers like me to better understand the power of herbs. I never get sick anymore and I've consumed a thousand tonic beverages at the tonic bar at Elixir. For me, this book is a fabulous window into the world of practical herbalism. I've already tried some of the make-at-home recipes and they're every bit as delicious and healthful as the ones available at the Elixir store. It's clear that the authors didn't hold back on wonderful knowledge that stands behind the success of their store. My family and I are big tonic drinkers now and I'll eventually try every recipe, from soup and spritzer. Great book!!!

The first biography of the man felt by many to be the grandfather of the movement for spiritual regeneration in Britain. Trevelyan espoused alternative values long before the phrase became popular. Trevelyan explored beliefs in angels, the calming effects of crystals and the power of ley lines, alongside organic farming and communal living.
In 1971 he set up the Wrekin Trust to promote spiritual education and knowledge, and in 1982 he was awarded the Right Livelihood Award (the"alternative Nobel Prize") for his contribution to healing the planet. He encouraged the emerging synthesis between science and spirituality, putting his faith for the future of society in the transforming power of spiritual awakening. He taught extensively, inspiring communities, universities and spiritual groups worldwide. He died in 1996 at the age of ninety.
