Book Description

In the city of Beirut, five shabby dwellings circle a courtyard with a pomegranate tree weeping blood red fruit. The residents hear screams in the night as a boy is tossed out into the street by his father—a punishment for masturbating in his sleep. A crime not worthy of the punishment: the neighbors gossip and decide that he must have tried to rape his sisters. “Small-boned with long, silky lashes, no one but the devil could camouflage evil so seductively.” The poems he writes are perhaps an even greater crime to his father, but ultimately a gift to his eldest sister, who narrates their story with a combination of brutal truth and stunning prose. As her brother becomes more and more lost to his family and to himself, we also learn of a Contessa who teaches tango, a family who spends every Sunday in search of buried treasure, and the miracle of a weeping Madonna statue that cries when human tears run dry.

In this harrowing and mesmerizing novel, celebrated novelist and poet, Khoury-Ghata, presents the disintegration of a family and a country—both ruled by a fury fueled by fear.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2006-03-18

The same wind that comes from the sea has run down the same streets for forty years. The rain that used to drench the buildings crossed a field of ruins. At the two extremities of this field: a house where my father conducted a reign of terror and a grave where he found a place not meant for him. He was buried there by chance. War had scrambled the country's geography: the dead were given up to the closest cemetery. ...

... I exhume two of my dead and one living-dead: my brother who concentrated within himself all of his father's ambitions and fury; I want to question them, open their mouths sealed in silence, to rout out by force the cause of those rages, as brutal and brief as resin-fires.

In a northern village, the tomb of a Maronite saint has been sweating blood for a century. My father's grave oozes threats from its stony pores. My mother's, modest and moss-covered, seeps tears. My mother had only tears to defend her son. "God, let him be dead!" I would repeat until I was near fainting when my father was late coming home. I dreamed about being an orphan. Only his death would stop my mother's tears, my brother's cries of terror, and we three girls from trembling.

...So begins Venus Khoury-Ghata's book, A House at the Edge of Tears - published by Greywolf Press, 2005. After reading the first four pages, I was left feeling as if my very being had been churned, tossed, and spit out - not so much horrified by the brutality but disturbed but at the same time in awe of the immense effect mere words, conjoined into haunting sentences, had effected - bringing home images of a brutality and a grief that one couldn't imagine, let alone empathize with.

Joyce Carol Oates wrote in her introduction to The Best American Essays of the Century - `My belief is that art should not be comforting. For comfort, we have mass entertainment and one another. Art should provoke, disturb, arouse our emotions, expand our sympathies in directions we may not anticipate and may not even wish.'

By that measure, Venus Khoury-Ghata has written a veritable piece of art. Most novels, in my opinion, lose a lot in translation but if that is the case here, the talent of Khoury-Ghata can only then amaze one even more. Marilyn Hacker, herself a poet and author of some repute, has brought us English readers a genuinely amazing read - so much so, I am tempted to go and immediately read Khoury-Ghata's award winning book of poems, She Says, also translated by Hacker.

Without giving away too much of the story here or having to reproduce the entire four pages or the entire book, for that matter, suffice it is to say that the book takes us along on a relentless, brutal, and hauntingly poignant journey, without ever stooping to self-pity or self-indulgent sensationalism.

The author, a Lebanese poet and novelist, resident in France since 1973, narrates the story of her childhood in Beirut forty years ago - throwing `sentences on the page in great shovelfuls, with a noise of falling earth,' digging into her `shame like a grave' - and takes us on a unsettling journey of her family's angst, set against the backdrop of the interminable descent of Lebanese society into the chaos of war.

Other than Without, a book of poems by Donald Hall, which I had read in one sitting deep into the night some years ago, and which had me bawling, commiserating with the loss felt by the poet over the loss of his wife, the poet, Jane Kenyon, I cannot remember any book that I have read - and there have been many over the years - which has evoked such a powerful emotional response from me. The story of this book, while sad and difficult, is not something which readers may never have encountered elsewhere. The grief and injustices suffered by the victims of war, the Holocaust, and other similar singular and not-so-uncommon travesties sometimes have a tendency to numb the spirit and have, in the past, prompted me to stay away from the mundane common fare of umpteen novels, fictional and memoirs, written each year about the tragedies that befall families and how they either fight through it or succumb to it. However, this is not one of those books... the reasons that make this book special and different is that the story was not what moved me but it was the words, the sentences, and the powerful images and their symbolism that conveyed...

Only in reading the Afterward at the end of the book, which the author signs off as herself and not as the narrator of the novel, did I realize that the power and potency of the words comes through a real familiar experience of the author. While the artistic liberties taken by the author in narrating the story of her brother are unclear, (the book not being indicated anywhere as being a memoir), clearly the novel is a journey of catharsis ('to each his own tomb: mine is in these pages'), guilt, fear, grief, shame (`shame nailed me to the ground', and finally, redemption (with the novel ending with `You (the brother) are the only survivor').

--
Personal Note: At 110 pages, the novel is a short read but for all the reasons outlined above, can be a moving and difficult one. In fact, I found it very difficult to go past the first four pages the first couple of times. Interjected by the mundane routine of life and work, I moved to some `lighter' reading, but came back to this book after a two-week hiatus on a flight from Boston to Cleveland. But re-reading the first few pages, I once again struggled to continue -not because the language is difficult, which has happened to me before with David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas and to a certain extent with Ian McEwan's Amsterdam), but because the words affronted me with their brutal honesty - like the pomegranate tree in the courtyard of the narrator's childhood home, `spattering the landing with bloody juice when its fruit burst open in the sun'. I stopped but restarted again at page 75 the next time and succeeded in reading the last 30 pages - and found that after that I was able to somehow making the necessary emotional leap to start again at the beginning. Reading the end prematurely may have taken away some of the `suspense' from the reading but the writing is what kept me hooked, not the story and so I finished reading the entire book in one sitting (being stuck on a plane for 2 hours helped!) - starting again at the beginning and re-reading the last 30 pages again for a final complete reading of the book.

Book Description

In Dragon’s Kin, bestselling author Anne McCaffrey did the unthinkable: for the first time ever, she invited another writer to join her in the skies of her most famous fictional creation. That writer was her son, Todd McCaffrey. Together, they penned a triumphant new chapter in the annals of the extraordinarily popular Dragonriders of Pern. Now, for the first time, Todd McCaffrey flies alone. And Dragonsblood is proof that the future of Pern is in good hands. After all, dragons are in his blood. . . .

Never in the dramatic history of Pern has there been a more dire emergency than that which faces the young dragonrider Lorana. A mysterious fatal illness is striking dragons. The epidemic is spreading like wildfire . . . and the next deadly cycle of Threadfall is only days away. Somehow, Lorana must find a cure before the dragons–including her own beloved Arith–succumb to the sickness, leaving Pern undefended.

The lyrics of an all-but-forgotten song seem to point toward an answer from nearly five hundred years in the past, when Kitti Ping and her daughter Wind Blossom bred the first dragons from their smaller cousins, the fire-lizards. No doubt the first colonists possessed the advanced technology to find the cure for which Lorana seeks, but over the centuries, that knowledge has been lost.
Or has it?

For in the distant past, an aged Wind Blossom worries that the germs that affect the fire-lizards may one day turn on larger prey–and unleash a plague that will destroy the dragons, Pern’s only defenders against Thread. But as her people struggle to survive, Wind Blossom has neither the time nor the resources to expend on a future that may never arrive–until suddenly she uncovers evidence that her worst fears will come true.

Now two brave women, separated by hundreds of years but joined by bonds transcending time, will become unknowing allies in a desperate race against sickness and Threadfall, with nothing less than the survival of all life on Pern at stake.

5 out of 5 stars Dragonsblood (Pern) .......2007-09-09

I am glad to see that Todd is following in his mother's footsteps. As always, I enjoyed reading about the dragonriders of Pern. Todd is now filling in the years between falls. Keep up the good work.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2007-09-05

It stays within the story Anne Mccaffrey started. Todd Mccaffrey has his own style and it is a great one. I look forward to read more great stories from this young man. I predict he will carve his own acclaim in science fiction.

5 out of 5 stars More please.......2007-08-01

Seamless shift in storytelling from Mother to Son. This is my favorite series, and I'm so glad to see it continued. It's great that the story of the watchwhers being pursued. I'm ready to learn more about Pern.

5 out of 5 stars like Mother, like Son.......2007-07-24

I am so glad to see the young Mccaffrey's following in Mamma's writing. This was a wonderful book on it's own. and I enjoyed the side trip to another part of the Pern legacy. I hope they continue to bring us stories of the Dragons of Pern.

1 out of 5 stars Dazed and Confused!.......2007-05-29

The plot (???) of this book wanders so far afield from the Pern "canon" that I almost thought I was reading a different series. Many well-established facts from the world of Pern and dragons were simply ignored; others were given ridiculous uses and explanations. But the real problem is the science of the book. It's clear that Todd McCaffrey doesn't KNOW any. I have no idea what the man does for a living, but I hope he's not a scientist of any sort. Wind Blossom's "explanations" of genetics are enough to make any real-world geneticists/biologists roll their eyes and shake their heads. The notion of trying to teach genetics to a group of people in a few HOURS goes beyond ridiculous into "pathetic." If he's going to write about a science, he needs to get someone as a technical advisor who knows what they're talking about, because he clearly hasnt' got a clue.

I'm really glad I bought a used copy; there's no way this is worth the cost of a new paperback, much less the price of a hardcover book!

4 out of 5 stars His mother's son.......2007-08-01

I was a bit hesitant when I first started reading the books co-authored by Todd McCaffrey, since I am such a huge fan of his mother, but soon found I was able to enjoy the different perspective and view of this world. This Dragonrider book that he's now written on his own gives me hope that the series will continue for a long time - it was hard to remember while reading it that Anne was not the author. While the subject matter was a bit distressing for a diehard dragon fan; I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to more.

Gardner Dozois once again proves himself to be among the best editors in science fiction with The Year's Best Science Fiction Sixteenth Annual Collection. Whether you like your SF hard or soft, with a twist or straight, you'll find something to love in here. Dozois picked perfect 1998 stories from the likes of Greg Egan, Bruce Sterling, and Ursula K. Le Guin for celebrity sparkle, but he didn't overlook relative newcomers either. It's hard to pick favorites from such a varied and delightful bunch. Paul J. McAuley's "Sea Change, with Monsters" is a thriller taking place in the icy seas of Europa, where genetically engineered weapon-creatures battle humans for survival. Cory Doctorow weighs in with the funny and poignant "Craphound," a tale of two secondhand junk entrepreneurs who find out that the love of good kitsch transcends all barriers. Liz Williams's "Voivodoi" explores one family's anguish and triumph in an Eastern Europe scarred by mutagens. And as usual, Dozois provides a stylish wrap-up of the previous year in science fiction, fantasy, and horror publishing. It speaks well for the health of the genre that Dozois picked these winners from hundreds of stellar nominees (he lists them in the back). And it's a rare treat to enjoy every single story in a collection. --Therese Littleton

          Book Description

Long regarded as the premier annual collection of science fiction stories, Gardner Dozois's latest volume of The Year's Best Science Fiction continues this tradition of excellence with twenty-five representing the finest offerings in the field.

Among the gems included here are:
"Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang, in which the story of alien contact and a very human drama merge beautifully

"The Island of the Immortals" by Ursula K. Le Guin, in which a brave traveler investigates the reasons why people shun the exotic island

"Approaching Perimelasma" by Geoffrey A. Landis, which boldly takes us into a black hole and through the stunning changes that ensue

"Taklamakan" by Bruce Sterling, a wildly inventive tale of future spies in a Lost World

"The Summer Isles" by Ian R. MacLeod, a moving novella reflecting an alternate history in which the Great War turned out a bit differently

In addition, there are twenty more stories here by the field's masters and by up-and-coming new writers, including: William Barton
          Stephen Baxter
          Rob Chilson
          Tony Daniel
          Cory Doctorow
          Greg Egan
          Jim Grimsley
          Gwyneth Jones
          Chris Lawson
          Tanith Lee
          Paul J. McAuley
          Ian McDonald
          Robert Reed
          William Browning Spencer
          Allen Steele
          Michael Swanwick
          Howard Waldrop
          Cherry Wilder
          Liz Williams
          Robert Charles Wilson

Completing the collection are Dozois's insightful survey of the year in science fiction and a long list of Honorable Mentions.

With its explorations of outer space and inner space, with its examinations of what it means to be human today and tomorrow, and with its love of a good yarn, this volume remains the single best source for science fiction stories.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for the Chiang and Le Guin stories alone........2004-10-11

Gardner Dozois always comes out with a very good Year's Best collection, but it seems as though the Sixteenth Annual Collection is one of the best in recent memory. There's the obvious mention of Ted Chiang's brilliant Nebula Award-winning "Story of Your Life," which is quite clearly among the finest stories in the past decade. Chiang himself is an accomplished stylist and he uses original and inventive ideas to aid the human element of each story. He is one of the most important new talents to emerge from SF in a long time, and everyone seems to think so; he's won three Nebulas, one Hugo, the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, an Asimov's Readers' Poll, a Sidewise Award, the Sturgeon Award, and two Locus Poll Awards, and all with only nine published stories to his credit. "Story of Your Life" is perhaps his best, and it would be worth the price of the collection alone.

But there is another story, by another very accomplished writer. "The Island of the Immortals" by Ursula K. Le Guin is among the finest stories I have read in a long time, a highly accomplished work. It is exquisitely put together and delicately crafted, like a detailed wooden carving. Le Guin is a talent that has been in the SF field for many years, and it was refreshing to see a story as good as this in the field.

If this nonstop praise seems nauseating to you, then rest assured that there are some stories in the collection that I did not like; but there also other stories that are extremely good, but I felt did not merit particular attention. Also, there are always stories in collections such as this that one does not like. Like most anthologies, however, the outstanding virtues of a relative few are able to make me forgive the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Not as strong as previous years.......1999-11-02

Although some stories were quite good, the overall impact left me wanting more. Some of the stories were more fantasy than science fiction. I especially enjoyed the 14th edition as it had a majority of "hard" science fiction. I keep buying this each year however as the quality is always quite good. More science in the science fiction would have rated 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The four sublimely transcendental samadhis of Adi Da Samraj.......1999-12-23

The Dawn Horse Testament is the ultimate guide to the mastery of transcendental awareness, and enlightenment. The incomparable western master Adi Da exquisitely illuminates the mystery of Who you Ultimately Are, intensifying meditative awareness through the ajna door into the incredible mastery of Divine Ignorance, Divine Realization, and Divine Being. The ultimate answers within transcendental awareness await the arrival of the newly wakened meditator's assimilation of the four samadhis of Adi Da.

The Dawn Horse Testament is an invaluable companion to anyone on the path of the mastery of awareness. Other seventh stage teachings are Self-Realization of Noble Wisdom: The Lankavatara Sutra; Mahamudra: Quintessence of Mind and Meditation; and The Four Yogas Of Enlightenment. The exploration of consciousness through the four samadhis of The Dawn Horse Testament is without parallel and sublimely transcendental.

                  Book Description

Travel adventures and tasty food go hand in hand. Mystical Places and Marvelous Meals: A Travel Cookbook, explores ancient settlements, searches for legendary beasts, and dispels travel myths while sampling local delicacies.

Authors Sara Nieves-Grafals and Al Getz—a husband and wife team of mental health professionals turned travel/cookbook writers—take us on over twenty years of journeys peppered with history, geography, folklore, cross-cultural psychology, foreign languages, architecture, mythology, archaeology, and gastronomy. Seventy-five recipes from their Washington, D.C. home kitchen transport us to different destinations.

Sara Nieves-Grafals, a polyglot clinical psychologist from Puerto Rico, dances flamenco in her spare time. She lectures about mental health issues and has a psychotherapy practice. Al Getz, originally from New Jersey, retired as a public health analyst. He has edited scientific publications, builds cabinets, designs kitchens, and dabbles in photography, classical music and painting. Together they journey through life, traveling, learning, and cooking.

                  5 out of 5 stars A five star book.......2006-09-12

I have been reading and trying some of the delicious recipes this summer only to be impressed with the delightful and humorous tales which add to the savoring of the food. This book is a wonderful addition for those who like to travel, or cook, or both. It is unique in its approach and geared for those who enjoy their travels not by concentrating on facts and numbers about a country, but by their interactions with its people.

The authors vivid accounts of their interactions with the personalities of various countries give the readers a flavor for their culture and customs. The use of the palate through the recipes is just another venue for transporting the reader along with the authors in their travels. Buy the book, it is a pleasure to read.

5 out of 5 stars A new look at travel and food.......2006-03-06

Mystical Places and Marvelous Meals: A Travel Cookbook is a fun read and a unique blend of travel, food, culture and history that whets the appetite for off the beaten path travel and a variety of food adventures. For anyone interested in travel, it provides multiple dimensions to any excursion, offering not just an account of the authors' travels but a way of approaching travel that takes us beyond just the tourist sights. For those of us who love food and cooking, it places culinary delights in the context of history, culture and the people that eat the ethnic dishes described in the book on a daily basis. Just as the sightseeing is often off the beaten path, the recipes are also not always typical or familiar to to us, but are delicious; and many are easy eough for a mid-week meal. The Cabbage and Pasta, for example, is great tasting, simple, healthy and can turn a work night dinner into an ethnic eating adventure. The ineresting stories and anecdotes suggest that we visit other places with an open and curious mind that will allow experiencing any trip to the fullest. This is a fun, informative book that is definetly worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Recipes with culture .......2006-02-08

Loved it! At last a book that focuses on something other than sight seeing, namely the other memorable aspect of travel - local cuisine. What makes this cookbook unique is that unlike cookbooks specializing in the cuisine of a foreign country, which tend to provide a mere listing of recipes, here the authors weave local recipes into storytelling of local legends. The book implants local culture and folklore into cuisine. Both legends and accompanying recipes are captivating, e.g., Pasta for a Funeral or an Orgy, which is presented in the chapter on Italy. The book has an international flair to it, covering travels and recipes in such countries as France, Portugal, Turkey, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, and Peru. Some recipes are unique and can't be found in many cookbooks including mussels with potatoes, Turkish remedy potatoes, pasta with pistachios, and beans with clams. Most recipes are easy to prepare, and the novice cook should have few problems in the kitchen. This book is for the traveler who can't be satisfied with only photographs of foreign places as well as for the curious food lover who craves for more than just a recipe.

5 out of 5 stars Magic in plates and places.......2006-02-01

It is easy to make me want to travel to all the places so beautifully described in this book. But making me want to cook is nothing short of magic: this book accomplishes that as no other cook book ever has. The thrill of picturing the places where the food originated while chopping and cooking makes each meal an experience rather than a chore. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars buy the book, get a great meal and an adventure.......2006-01-29

Each of the wonderful recipes tastes even better when you have a chance to savor not only the food, but the local flavor that is delivered by the vignettes...I not only lovve this book, I love the concept of a combination travel and food book..

4 out of 5 stars Limoges Boxes - From Snuff to Sentiment.......2000-09-26

I found the book to be quite interesting, not to mention beautifully photographed. While I have to agree with some of the other reviewers that the book tends to be a bit jaded (since the author IS the President of a major Limoges distributor), it is still packed with history and facts. However, I would have preferred that it also mention current values of some of the many styles of Limoges boxes. 'Looks great sitting on the coffee table!!

5 out of 5 stars Has everything a true collector would want to know........1999-10-07

If you've been looking for a collector's book on Limoges porcelain boxes for many years like I have then you'll be overjoyed to know that someone has finally done an incredible job.

The "Limoges Porcelain Box: From Snuff To Sentiments" by Richard Sonking has everything true collectors could possibly want. This is one coffee-table book that will not gather dust. The photographs are beautiful. It will provide wonderful reading, with a wealth of information and history in addition to how the boxes are designed from start to finish.

                  Tre's Magnifique!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Only good for history, poor for collectors.......1999-09-30

The author of the book is the President of Rochard, a major producer of Limoges Boxes. If you want to learn about the history of the porcelein and painting techniques - read on. However, I wanted to learn more about the different artists and manufacturers. Mr. Sonking features only his "Rochard" boxes. Too slanted for my taste.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book that thoroughly covers its subject........1999-04-21

This beautiful book, a labor of love by the man behind Rochard Limoges, is a must have for any devoted collector of porcelain boxes. The photographs are gorgeously laid out to tell the history and show the manufacture of these exquisite collectible art objects.

                                    Book Description

The designer of such landmarks as the Washington Square Arch, the New York Herald and Tiffany Buildings, and the homes of captains of American industry, Stanford White is a legendary figure in the history of American architecture. Yet while the exteriors and floor plans of his designs have been extensively studied and written about, no book has fully examined the other aspect of his career, which claimed at least half of his time and creativity. Wayne Craven's work offers the first study of Stanford White as an interior decorator and a dealer in antiques and the fine arts.

Craven also offers a vivid portrait of the sweeping social and cultural changes taking place in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He places White's work as an interior decorator within the context of the lives and society of the nouveaux riches who built unprecedented fortunes during the Industrial Revolution. Rejecting the dominant middle-class tastes and values of the United States, the Whitneys, Vanderbilts, Astors, Paynes, Mackays, and other wealthy New York families saw themselves as the new aristocracy and desired the prestige and trappings accorded to Old World nobility. Stanford White fulfilled their hunger for aristocratic recognition by adorning their glamorous Fifth Avenue mansions and Long Island estates with the sculptures, stained-glass windows, coats of arms, and carved fireplaces of the European past. Interior decorators such as White did more than just buy single pieces for these families. They purchased entire rooms from palazzos, chateaux, villas, nunneries, and country houses; had them dismantled; and shipped -- both furnishings and architectural elements -- to their American clients. Through Stanford White's activities, Craven uncovers the mostly, but not always, legal business of dealing in antiquities, as American money entered and changed the European art market.

Based on the archives of the Avery Architectural Library of Columbia University and the New-York Historical Society, this book recovers a neglected yet significant part of White's career, which lasted from the 1870s to his murder in 1906. White not only set the bar for twentieth-century architecture but also defined the newly emerging profession of interior design.

                                        Book Description

Tausha is the true account of the brief life and profound teachings of a Russian mystic and healer during the 1980s, told by a disciple now living in US. Presenting fascinating and original spiritual teachings, as bizarre as Castaneda's tales of Don Juan, Tausha is suspenseful and intriguing. It offers insight into the famous "psychic discoveries behind the iron curtain" and the KGB's nefarious involvement with paranormal phenomena. Its strange tale unfolds during the final decade of the Soviet regime, evoking the struggles of people seeking esoteric knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Living light from Russia.......2001-03-19

Because Russia has for so long been disconnected from the flow of people, ideas and information that has over the last century so enriched the consciousness of the rest of the world, most of us know little about the spiritual insides of this deep and mysterious land. As many of us have suspected from the scant but intriguing stories of extrasensory discoveries behind the iron curtain, from what we know of the legacy of original teachers such as Gurdieff and Ouspensky, and even from the novels of Dostoevsky, there is a deep and unique vein of other-worldly connection in the Russian tradition. Some dimensions of it are profoundly spiritual, producing an effulgence of light and wisdom, while other aspects have been developed in the service of darkness, for sinister use by the KGB (the secret police) and for psychic warfare.

The interplay between the forces of light and darkness is a part of this story as well, as Beliaev seeks initially to make sense of some terrifying encounters with "the Prince of the World" (aka the Prince of Darkness) and other dark beings who came to him from time to time during the earlier part of his spiritual journey. His inner world ignited when he met a strange and powerful spiritual master, Tausha, who was essentially a living channel of light and healing, and who imparted the techniques of being a vehicle of this light to his disciples.

The conflict between light and dark in the author's inner universe culminates during a sojourn with Tausha and his band of followers in the Armenian mountains when, to Beliaev's utter horror, the Prince appears on the crest of the hill beyond their campfire - and he sees the features of the Dark One suddenly reflected through his teacher's face. He made the traumatic decision to abandon Tausha on the spot, precipitating a long period of confusion, as the student, bereft of his teacher and the living flow, struggles to make sense of it all on his own. Eventually, they are reunited for a brief time before Tausha's untimely death.

The master's purpose for himself and his disciples was, as he put it,"to establish the site of another reality in this gloomy world - a reality where the natural course of evolution can be restored.....The plan is to create a Shambala-like place, a place hospitable to the flow, right here in the midst of the Soviet madness, in the city, not in a faraway retreat. ...When I say `a place', I don't mean a concrete location, I mean an energy structure, a sacred bowl filled up with energy and acting as an energy preserve."

Living beneath this continual and ever-increasing downpour of energy was a transformative and blissful experience for the group, infusing not just their minds and bodies with light, vibrancy and supreme aliveness, but filling them up as well with the imperative to channel this awareness into the world. It was life in a state of Grace.

Tausha teaches them that they are not working alone. Initiating the process requires a blessing from a higher source. The Sufi masters call this light of blessing baraka, which means grace, or the power given for the Work. What is required of those who receive this blessing is service - a dedication to becoming a channel, a link that connects the realm of the higher energies to this world. Of necessity, a healer who seeks to serve in this way must do the difficult inner spiritual work of dissolving the ego in order to become a pure, empty channel.

Tausha is a very creative teacher and instructs them in various disciplines. Some are original to him, and some are traditional, among them Kunta yoga, a yoga of mystical symbols and mantras. The author gives us a fascinating introduction to some of the basic glyphs, explaining that when meditating on these symbols, one comes into resonance with Shakti, the creative energy of the cosmos.

In the end, Tausha dies alone in the woods. But the end turns out to be but another astonishing beginning in this transcendental tale, for his death simply inaugurated another phase of the mission. He appears to the group again, months after his death, matter-of-factly walking in the door as they were meditating, looking very corporeal in his astral form. He offered them now an even greater opportunity to live in the Flow, since he could in his new embodiment in the Light even better guide, protect and supply the group with energy than before.

Perhaps the most beautiful part of the book was not so much the story of Tausha and his life and teachings, stellar as these were, but the existential distillation in the end of Beliaev's own life and experience as he evolves beyond the personal touch of his teacher. In the end he was blessed with an awareness of something higher than the flow..the Presence. And he now clearly deserves the honour of being called a master healer and teacher in his own right.

"Tausha - The Life and Teachings of a Russian Mystic" is an incredibly rich and illuminating book. It's an original vision of tremendous depth and power, capturing the sublime in an exquisite prism of elegant prose. It truly deserves a place on the spiritual seeker's bookshelf beside the volumes of Castaneda, the tales of the Sufis and all other such works of authentic spiritual vision that the new global dawning of higher consciousness has brought forth.

Stake that Claim is an American geography educational game that has several additional teaching materials that can be ordered with the game or separately.   We recommend that home school families and teachers consider ordering all of the materials involved, but you may choose to just order a portion of complete package. The additional components are:

                                              Study guide
                                              Lesson plans
                                              Exams

The study guide is crucial to fully utilize the game as a teaching exercise, and the advanced level of the game requires the study guide.

Basic lesson plans are written to complement the learnings from the game and study guide, not replace it.

Exams are written using material from both the study guide and the lesson plans may also be ordered.
