Courage and Heart.......2006-05-04
These are wonderfully crafted stories. R.M. Kinder shows remarkable courage by grabbing and using phrases aptly that few writers realize are even out there. Her characters are three-dimensional, and what they do makes me say to myself, "I remember that. Yes, I was there." But I wasn't. The author made me go there in my head. She has good sight, hearing, memory, rhythm, and heart. A beautiful writer in all ways.
Do yourself a favor and read this book.
R.M. Kinder's Perfect Gift for Readers.......2005-11-13
I first met Onie, Old Lady Buckroe, and the boys at 30,000 feet, somewhere over southern California on a flight to Seattle. They were the first characters encountered in R.M. Kinder's award winning book of short stories entitled "A Near-Perfect Gift." I had chosen this book to be my companion on a two day business trip and it proved itself to be an amiable and engaging traveling partner. The story of the boys "Going into Battle" against imaginary witches, soon morphed into stories of personal "Ghosts" and the "Madman's Moon," the type of experiences we have all tried to exorcize from our own imperfect lives. As the daylight dimmed in the airplane cabin, I switched on the overhead light and entered into the yellow, dry heat of the Missouri summer, waiting with Ruth and James for their big sister Cora and her baby to arrive at the train depot. By now I sensed the "Pulse of the World," and the geographic and biographic rhythms of the American Midwest that gently bound these stories together. James' youthful frustrations and impulsiveness merged into young Mary's fierce determination and sense of injustice in "The Promise." The stories flowed together like a dream, where names and scenes change but the underlying personalities and pathos remain the same. Was it Martha or Cora who was tempted by the existential serpent in "A Winter's Snake?" Was it Kay or Martha who was fascinated by Buddy's Bartleby-like behavior while "Searching for Heroes?"
I separated from my friends for a couple of days while I took care of business but caught up with them again as the pilot turned off the fasten seatbelt sign somewhere over Portland. James had gone from driving fast cars to driving out the demons of Vietnam in "Baby Blues." His frail elderly mom, Oida (or was it Martha again?) found redemption in saving an emergent demon (or one of god's misplaced creatures), as well as herself, in a "Near-Perfect Gift." The flight attendant delivered my gin-and-tonic just in time to help me through the edgy shampoo scene in "An Intimate Gesture" and the surreal siren's song in "Friday Fisherman." The neighborhood ghost returned in "Late Fall," this time as a timeless observer of Oida and her family over the many years. And finally, somewhere during the descent toward San Diego, life both ended and was renewed "With a Change of Seasons." As I stuffed the book back in my bag and stowed it for landing, I reflected on the people, places, and themes of Kinder's "near-perfect" literary gift. No awful monsters were slain, no grails found, no heroes resurrected, no ultimate triumph of good over evil; just simple stories of everyday fears and hopes, fascinations and miracles, bound together with love and empathy.
I highly recommend this book to other readers, whether traveling by plane or in the comfort of their favorite reading chair.

From New York Times bestselling author Andrew M. Greeley, a collection of all new Irish tales to treasure and enjoy hough the Emerald Isle is no stranger to tales of the fantastic (everything from the Hound Cuchlain to Darby O'Gill and his leprechaun friends), most of the fantasy works dealing with Ireland have limited themselves to either ancient history/Celtic legends and lore, sentimental tales of wee folk, or ghostly tales of hauntings in old desterted castles. Needless to say, there is more to the history and culture of Ireland than the sort of entertainment fare popularized each year around March 17th. Not Free SF Reader.......2007-10-07
This was better than I expected, actually. Greeley divides the book into two parts, actual stories involving the fairdinkum mythological types such as leprechauns, sidhe, and other such supernatural beings, and 'literary fantasies' in the latter, where you get space swan pilots and a time stranded Fianna, etc. The first half is where the good stuff is generally, but Tremayne's in the latter is good, although a pretty standard vampire storie, no faerie to be seen.

Very Irish & Very Fanciful.......2004-07-16
I suggest pausing between stories to clear the mind. All the writers bring their own style, but also that Irish lyrical writing. To really savor each one, you need to avoid rushing straight through.
Not being well-grounded in all the creatures of Irish folklore, some of the scarier stories surprised me. These are not your Lucky Charm leprechauns.
I'd also recommend Norah Roberts'A Little Magic which embraces Irish fantasies with a romantic flair.
A great group of stories.......2004-02-19
This wonderful book is a collection of some fifteen stories of Irish magic. The authors of the stories are all masters of the writing profession - Tanith Lee, Ray Bradbury, Fred Saberhagen, Morgan Llywelyn, and others. The book is arranged into two groups: The Little People, and Literary Fantastics, but don't imagine that it is quite that clear. The stories all range in setting from the ancient past to the very modern, and each is a masterpiece, ranging from the sad to the heartwarming to the hilarious.
As you might expect with an anthology, I found some of the stories to be better than others. I loved Cecilia Dart-Thornton and Jacqueline Carey's stories of ancient times (I always loved the old Irish heroic stories), and also Fred Saberhagen horror story. Those are my three favorites, but my hat is off to Peter Tremayne's story, which juxtaposes the horrors of yesterday with those of today. (I wish I could tell you about it, but that would be spoiling things!)
Yep, this is a great group of stories. If you like Irish stories, then you absolutely most get this book. And even if it's just that you like good modern stories of the fantastic, you will love this book. I highly recommend it!
Ah, Irish Magic!.......2004-02-05
What a lovely book! I gave it as a gift to myself, because Father Greeley is one of my guilty pleasures. I have always been a huge fan of the work of Charles De Lint, and the Butter Spirit's tithe was a great read, very fun. Likewise Elizabeth Haydon, whose prose has always reminded me a little bit of William Butler Yeats, infuses her charming take with the poetry only found in Irish blood. Judith Tarr, an author I had not read before, also impressed me favorably.
There is not a truly bad story in here, though I thought the Carey and Yolen tales could have been a bit better told. But all in all, this is a wonderful collection for anyone who enjoys great storytelling, a great variety of interpretation, and magic.

Buy it NOW if you can, excellent series continues.......2000-03-29
I picked up the Fleet series as a lark, but now it has me hooked. Book 3 continues an excellent storyline that pits a fragile alliance of humans and aliens against the ravenous Khalia, who are threatening to enslave the entire human race (and have already enslaved quite a few other races). The book in simply a series of short mostly military sci-fi stories. At the end of each story, there is an interlude which kinda a larger more ongoing story in and of itself. While the interludes are a bit lacking in book 3 ( I found them quite amusing in the first 2) The level of writing in book 3 is second to none. Robert Scheckley, Janet Morris, Gary Gygax, heck, I didn't even know Janny Wurts wrote sci-fi(check out her Empire Series with Raymond Feist- AWESOME) And the way the stories intermingle, Mr Drake, you have outdone yourself. Book 1 was just a series of stories that kinda went together, and really needed the brief interludes to introduce you to a new subject. The new stories of book 3 blend together for an entertaining and engaging read. Not only that, many of the same authors have returned to the series and continue the storylines of a whole host of interesting, unique characters. There is a reason I am ordering these books used. They are in 2 words : That Good. I simply wish they were still in print. If you can find them BUY THEM

Helpful, but I Fear Credibility.......2005-02-27
By incorporating a wide array of extrabiblical evidence from shortly after the dispersion of Christianity to the nations, Bradshaw definitely provides a service to the reader on the various forms of "worship." He does a very good job at demonstrating how architecture can reveal purpose, belief, and practice. Also, by drawing from a wide variety of sources from a multitude of persuasions he does show effort at presenting as unbiased a presentation as possible. Bradshaw breaks the book up into three basic sections:
(1) Development of how Christians were initiated into the Church (quite a bit of work goes into analyzing forms of baptism on this point).
(2) The Eucharist or Lord's Supper.
(3) The daily and ceremonial disciplines/celebrations that united the Body.
The book is very accessible. The scholar may wish for some more detail and probably more thorough documentation. However for the lay reader who is interested in the subject, the format makes it a very easy read.
Unfortunately, at this point my compliments cease. I am not writing this review from a standpoint of one very knowledgeable of the archaeological evidence or one intimate in understanding of the primary sources, so I can not speak to his responsible use of those. I do, however, speak from the advantage of one who accepts the Bible (in its autographic form) as the final authority on matters of both history and faith, as both infallible and inerrant, and from this perspective, I am very disappointed in the book. Don't get me wrong. I trust the Bible because of both internal and external evidence to its credibility. But Bradshaw consistently questions Biblical record when they are not consistent with his extrabiblical findings, even if those extrabiblical findings rely on many assumptions and guesses. For example, a number of times he casts doubt on the reliability of Matthew 28:18-20 (The Great Commission) as being added to the text later when there is absolutely no textual evidence of this. According to the Metzger's Textual Commentary, there is no question among the textual critics that the rendering that we have for these verses is autographic. Yet, Bradshaw in true redaction form, flippantly, as if it were common knowledge that these were added, blows them off as not being acceptable as a true saying of Jesus. From this example and others with which I am familiar, I fear for the accuracy and trustworthiness of Bradshaw's conclusions. Therefore, I cannot recommend this book.

Oh, what a bonus! A great cookbook and a surprise inside..........1999-10-31
I had been wanting this cookbook for a long time but never got around to ordering it. (I know - excuses, excuses!) Normally, I like to order by mail (like Amazon), but not too ago, I walked into a major bookstore chain in Houston where they had some copies on sale. I thumbed through it and saw many enticing recipes at first glance - not just one! Like Aunt Pittypat's Pecan Poundcake - you can't go wrong with this one! Buy the book and see the surprise ingredients! Anyhow, because of a silly habit I have, I always reach down and get from the middle bottom. When I opened up the book, there in the front cover was Regis Phlbin's personal signature. It read, "Thanks & Bon Appetit - Regis Philbin." I asked the clerk about it and she said sometimes they send out signed copies. Thanks, Regis, for making my day! The wonderful and funny personalities of Regis & Kathy Lee and their guests come alive all throughout this book which makes it that much sweeter! I love the book! The garlic rice with pine nuts (yum! yum!) is worth the money all by itself! I can't wait to try more recipes. But now I have to buy another copy so I can actually turn the pages! (I'm saving this copy!) To all who buy it - bon appetit!
Great "Star" Recipes and a wide range of interesting dishes.......1998-11-12
The book is well organized. It is lots of fun for the TRUE Regis and Kathie Lee Fans. However, even if you don't like them you'll enjoy the cook book. So check it out and enjoy a dish tonight.

While most of their books are good, I foud this especially helpful since it even covered holidays and parties. I came across many new and different ideas, not to mention ones that are economical and REALLY REALLY useful. If you've read all there is to read on this subject, then this book is just another one of them, but if not, then this is a definite addition to your bookshelf. But either way, this book is also a lot of fun,so you'll want to read it anyway.

Too Many Mistakes.......2005-07-12
There are just far too many mistakes in the book to be able to give much credit to the values it lists. Supposidly the author is some sort of expert on guns, but there are many, many errors in models, manufacturers, etc. to believe he has much experience at all. Pass on this one.
Official Price Guide To Antique And Modern Firearms -8th Ed........2003-10-22
This book may not be a Flayderman's Guide in the detail that is offered, but for what it is, it simply can't be beaten!
This is the one book that you must have in your library that you won't get rid of until the next edition comes out!
When other guides fail you, and don't list that obscure gun in their pages, you can almost always find it here. Forget the fact that this book isn't updated as often as I would like to see it done, the guns are in there, even if the details are lacking and the prices aren't up to date. All book price guides are outdated before they hit the bookstands, anyway, since it takes about a year to compile prices, edit copy and print the books. You have to use any book as a guide, only, and inject auction values, gun show offerings and other sources of knowledge to arrive at real value, in any case. This book is a "must have" simply as an identifier!
Looking For History Of Old Gun.......2001-03-27
I'm in the Royal malaysian police. I'm looking for history about an old sidearms in our force by name Revolver.38 Mark IV Webley. I just be informed that this pistol from Great Britain. I really need more info regarding this side arms. Can you send me this history of Webley thru email as soon as possible. I appreciate you can help and solve my big trouble. Thank you.
Price Guide to Antique and Modern Firearms; Review.......2000-11-27
I rate this book a solid five stars. This book is a very comprehensive price guide. It covers literally hundreds of manufacturers American and European. The Price Guide lists the grades and options and also classifies the gun (ie.curio, relic, modern, and antique).I do not however, recommend this book to the novice collector. The book is mainly text with few pictures depicting the individual grades or models.Personally I like it for the fact it is "unclutterd" by photo's which can be very misleading. I would say this book is a must have for the experienced collector or auction and gunshow attendants. The guide is compact for easy carrying around the shows and is formatted by maker for quick reference. The guide also has a very comprehensive glossary of gun terminology and even has a cartridge price and ATF classification guide.

The reason I like this book more than most books on interior design and home decorating is that the author is sensitive to the fact that not everyone can spend thousands of dollars to fix up their home interiors, and she also understands that we need to start where we are by taking a look at what we have already and working with it creatively. Unlike store-sponsored decorating, where the idea is to sell you as much new furniture, drapes, carpet, and materials as possible, the emphasis here is working with and around your current belongings and working within your practical budget. You'll find none of the old "gut the place and start from the bare studs" that one so often sees in decorating magazines. This is a decorating book for regular folks.
Book Description
This inspiring guide proves that it doesn't have to be difficult or expensive to decorate with charm and taste. Presented with an infectious can-do attitude and clear step-by-step instructions, Guntlow explains how to customize kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms, and baths, and offers ways to maximize storage space. Whether a home needs a massive overhaul or a "quick-fix" solution to problem areas, this book provides dozens of unique possibilities.

Very Basic.......2001-08-21
If you are looking for an instruction manual on how to sew certain window treatments or how to cut/install molding then this book may be for you. As far as inspiring designs or color schemes this book comes up lacking.
Started Out Good and then Fizzled.......2000-02-25
This book kept my attention for the first two chapters (15 pages). After that, it went downhill fast. There just didn't seem to be any new and exciting ideas that sprung out of this book. In fact, everything this book suggested I had either already tried without success or were so tacky that I wouldn't try them. Bottom line, don't waste your time.
Use this book only in extreme emergency!.......2000-01-24
Fortunately there are a lot of good books on the market. Personally, I don't see how this one got published. There is, in my opinion, a lot of wrong information contained in this book, and I would strongly advise anyone except the most decorating challenged to stay away from this publication. I am not a novice, but a professional with more than 20 years in the design field. I'm sorry to see that books like this get to market. For anyone wanting to decorate on their own try one of these books. Laurie Ward's "Use What You Have Decorating", Waverly's "Inspirations", "The Domain Book of Intuitive Home Design" or Jennifer Raffo's "Fabrique Technique." These are books in my professional opinion that will truly help the do-it-yourself decorator.
A disappointment.......1999-06-02
I guess it's because there are so many good decorating books on the market that this one stands out for its lack of quality, both in ideas and in execution of those ideas.
Very disappointing. No new ideas; projects looked "tacky".......1999-05-12
This book was very disappointing. None of the ideas were terribly creative or unique. Many of the suggestions and finished projects looked unprofessional and "tacky". Also, there were many typing and editing errors in the copy I received.

Women I would have liked to have known.......2006-11-10
This was a well-written and entertaining book. I have read other books which gave information on each of these five women, but this was the first which gave such great information on their occult lives. I was impressed by the historical research done on these impressive women. O! To have lived in London,Dublin and Paris during those times.Florence Farr seemed to me to be especially appealing; intelligent, talented and brave at same time. Ms. Greer has written a work to be proud of. It actually caused me to learn the Tarot.
extensively researched book brings characters to life!.......2004-02-01
This well written and extensively researched book gave me great insight into the Women of the Golden Dawn. One gets very accustomed to reading only about the male Golden Dawn figures such as Aleister Crowley and Samuel MacGregor Mathers. Finally, a book about the women and what interesting lives they led!
I liked the way Mary Greer divided the 4 featured women into different archetypes, thus explaining the different roles they had within the Golden Dawn. It also gives contemporary women role models and a deeper understanding of our own psyches.
The book was a fascinating read into these women's lives, what they accomplished and how powerful they truly were during the Victorian era!
Interesting Read.......2001-07-20
The role of the women who were involved in the Birth and Death of the Order has largely been overlooked.
It is highly recommendable if you would like a differing view of the rise and fall of the Order; it is an interesting combination of romance, drama, gossip, and historical information (Although I cannot attest to its accuracy). You are exposed to the flaws of the founders, and their weaknesses. While some of the interaction between members could come right out of Jerry Springer, it is still highly commendable.
I must admit I had a difficult time putting this book down.
An entertaining and scholarly book.......1999-04-08
Women of the Golden Dawn addresses a subject that is rarely touched on in other books on the Occult Revival: the role of the women in this movement. Mary K. Greer weaves a tapestry of astrology, tarot, metaphysics, biography, and history. The book elucidates many magickal principles as skillfully as it recounts the story of four uncommon women. The extensive endnotes are especially intriguing; tarot readers will be very interested at the in-depth records of Golden Dawn tarot readings and interpretations.
Good for fans of magic and the Golden Dawn.......1998-08-07
The Golden Dawn magical order was founded in 1888. Although it admitted women, they have been often overlooked in histories of the GD.Mary Greer redresses this oversight. The four women in question are Annie Horniman, actress and writer Florence Farr, freedom fighter for Ireland Maud Gonne and the mystical Moina Bergson Mathers.Greer claims that these women were the true heart and soul of the Golden Dawn, and it is hard not to agree with her. Each woman had exceptional talents, and each made her own unique contribution to this magical Order.Much research has gone into this book and it is packed with information not easily found on the subjects.Interesting details of some of the magical workings are given, including some by Maud Gonne and W.B.Yeats.The personal relationships, the bickering, the magic--it's all here.
