Loved It!.......2005-06-20
I really enjoyed this book! It was one of the first that I read from Hansen. The story is fun and endearing. This relationship was fun to watch develop. Through the story the couple encounters many obstacles and it keeps you on your toes.
exceptional.......2003-09-06
Jennie Hansen did a great job in this book. She keeps you guessing and doesn't reveal the secret to the mystery. The relationship between Taylor and Clay starts out stressed. But inspite of their best efforts they fall in love. If you have never read Jennie Hansen I highly recommend this book.
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating literary trek into magical realism courtesy of Jonathan Carroll.......2006-12-02
When the likes of fantasy authors as diverse as Neil Gaiman, Peter Straub and Jonathan Lethem are praising Jonathan Carroll's work, offering it the finest compliments that they can muster, then you know that Carroll is an author worthy of your attention (All three provided memorable blurbs in the back cover of this book's paperback edition.). Truly, without question, Carroll is both a memorable writer and a fine literary stylist. However, at least not in "Outside the Dog Museum", should he be regarded as a writer of fantasy. Instead, I concur with another reviewer who noted that this novel is truly a philosophical novel draped in moments of magical realism. Carroll's usage of magical realism may not be as beguiling as those from the likes of Borges and Garcia Marquez for example, but nonetheless, he manages to do a fine job of it in this novel.
Caroll's fine prose is written in a breezy, almost conversational, style, that works well in his depictions of the protagonist, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Harry Radcliffe, and his intense personal and romantic relationship with both of his mistresses, Claire and Fanny, who know each other well. After winning his award - and recovering from a recent divorce through the aid of a bizarre mental therapist - Radcliffe is offered a commission by the Sultan of Saru - a fictitious Gulf State emirate - to be a dog museum in honor of the sultan's late father, the previous ruler of the emirate. What follows is a series of fascinating, and occasionally confusing, adventures and misadventures for Harry Radcliffe set in both the emirate and Vienna, Austria - where the museum is ultimately built. Not only must he contend with his complex personal relationships with both of his mistresses and his therapist, Harry is unexpectedly confronted with a fundamentalist Islamic rebellion against the Sultan of Saru within his emirate. Until the very end Carroll does a fine literary juggling act, but his less than memorable conclusion is the main reason why his fine novel isn't earning my highest praise.
Hmmm. What to think..........2005-10-25
I liked it. I liked its hopefulness. It read a lot like The Wooden Sea. Sorry, but it does.
I've been reading his work since The Land of Laughs. I like what he does, but I have to say it's starting to get a little repetitive. Don't get me wrong: each novel is enjoyable, just a bit repetitive.
a dog of a book.......2005-08-13
the blurb on the back cover "Harry Radcliffe is a brilliant prize-winning architect--witty and remarkable" (Really? I'm Sooo impressed.) He's also a self-serving opportunist, ready to take advantage of whatever situation, and women, come his way." (A man who is READY! However ooops--) But now, newly divorced and having had an inexplicable" (mysterious) nervous breakdown," (Not our hero!) "Harry is being wooed" (wooed, mind you) by the extremely wealthy" (I guess they mean really rich) "Sultan of Saru to design a billion dollar dog museum." (What a GREAT plot. The sultan, the dogs, remarkable Harry) In Saru he (Harry) finds himself in a world even madder and more unreal than the one he left behind" (Where did he live? Glendale?) "and as his obsession (Yes the obsession) grows, the powers of magic weave around him," (Like Harry Potter) "and the implications of his strange undertaking grow more and more ominous and astounding..." I could only get a ways into this epic before I realized I was crossing the line into madness myself.
from LOCUS MAGAZINE, July 2005.......2005-07-25
"I read the reissue of OUTSIDE THE DOG MUSEUM and was blown away by it. It may very well be his best book. I made the mistake, the first time I read it 14 years ago, of thinking of it as a fantasy novel instead of a mainstream philosophical novel with fantasy tropes. Carroll, like Graham Joyce, uses fantasy tropes but he isn't a fantasy writer. There's an argument that Mahler's 10 symphonies are really only parts of one vast search for the meaning of life. I think of Carroll's novels the same way. They're all a search for transcendence through mystic or surrealist means."
fantastic allegorical tale .......2005-05-25
The Sultan of Saru tries to hire Pritzer Prize winning architect Harry Radcliffe to design a dog museum, but though he takes the bribes like a brand new car, Harry declines. Recently divorced over his Colonel Sanders' recipe and balancing two beautiful strong women, Fanny Neville and Claire Stansfield, at the same time he is a recovering mental breakdown patient struggling with what is reality under the guide of psychiatrist Venasque.
Reality strikes in the form of an earthquake devastating Harry's Santa Barbara home. Venasque's dog and the Sultan rescue Harry, who now feels obligated to both so agrees to the zillion dollar canine museum. In the Saru, Harry feels the magic is now in him, but soon finds himself in the middle of a Civil War in which his patron dies. Still Harry begins to understand the meaning of reality as magically altering when perceptions change while Harry also changes.
OUTSIDE THE DOG MUSEUM is a fantastic allegorical tale of a not so nice individual falling through the rabbit's hole. The amusing story line contains a powerful message while making a case that perception is relative. Readers will wonder if Harry's physical and mental transformations are magical or just the antihero going further over the edge following the insane shopping spree, the earthquake, and the war. Fans of metaphorical action tales will appreciate this fine satire by an author with the perfect surname even if Harry lacks Alice's innocence.

Customer Reviews:
Beware his power!.......2002-02-03
Green Lantern - arguably as powerful as Superman but back in the 1960s perhaps one of the more unsung super-heroes - returns in his earliest Silver Age adventures! Nobody did it better than John Broome and Gil Kane - the heroes, allies and villians are - out of this world!
This is one of only a handful of Silver Age archives in print right now - many of the others, especially those for Superman and Batman, showcase Golden Age stories. While these are classics, it is the Silver Age where comics really blossomed, and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) is a prime example.
The Green Lantern archives published to date (#1-3) contain hard-to-find (and expensive!) issues of Hal Jordan's earliest exploits, including origins and battles with his yellow power-ringed arch enemy Sinestro, Hector Hammond and others, plus his classic, colorful and extraordinary team-ups with The Fastest Man Alive - Flash (Barry Allen).
This is a must-buy, must-own and must-read series for any serious fan of the Silver Age - or comics in general. Good reading for those darkest days and blackest nights!
GL's light.......2001-10-25
A bit of nostalgia, hardbound and reasonably priced. Read all the stories as a youngster and was just as enchanted by the skill of the writer and the marvelous art work of Gil Kane (may he rest in peace) even as a middle-aged physician.
Anyone who loved DC and the silver age of comics in the early 60's and was mesmerized by the possibility of space travel, life on other worlds, speeds faster than light, or the ability to shrink to submicroscopic size should buy the entire collection

ok.......2005-09-15
I am not crazy about this book simply because it is a Concise translation. Otherwise it is a fine work. If you arent familiar with the scholastic set up or how it works this is probably the work for you, or are a "casual" reader of Thomas perhaps. I cannot quite imagine a casual reader of Thomas but thats ok. I would definitely recomend at least looking at the real thing at least once. The Benziger Bros. edition is probably one of the best, it keeps the scholastic structure that is, I think, so important especially for philosophical work. As someone familiar with medieval scholastic philosophy I could hardly imagine trying to slog through Thomas without the inherent structure to the argument that the scholastic form brings to it which is pretty much the part that gets sacrificed for conciseness in this version.
An Expanded Index.......2003-04-05
As a research student in philosophy and a Catholic priest I have found this volume invaluable. It sits on my shelf next to my five volume 1950 Leonine edition of the Summa and acts as an expanded index. This is undoubtedly its greatest value: when seeking something in the Summa the ability to lift down this one volume, look for the appropriate text and check a summary of the Questions before turning to the real thing. I would additionally recommend it to all philosophy students and those interested in Catholic Philosophy and Theology as a text which can stand alone and whet the interest in this great thinkers magnum opus.
Thumbnail of the Summa.......2002-11-07
This is an impressive book. It is a collection of all of the "I answer that" sections of the Summa Theologica. This gives you a supreme one-volume version of Thomas' affirmative thought on Catholic Theology and Philosophy. This is a great "Thumbnail" and "introduction" to the hefty five-volume opus that many people love, but few have read.
There are only two deficiencies with this volume. It does not have any commentary that other Thomistic books have, such as "A Summa of the Summa." Secondly, it omits the rather fascinating interplay of ideas that characterizes all of Thomas' works. Aquinas was agile at confronting and assimilating opposing ideas. He was able to intellectually met steel to steel, and this is what makes him a mental giant.
This book is good for Catholics who want to know their religion, or anyone who is not Catholic (as I am), who can appreciate a genius when he or she works
A must for students.......2000-07-16
While any rigorous Thomistic scholarship obviously requires reference to Aquinas' unabridged works, this translation and abridgment is ideal for introducing students to Aquinas' thought. It allows students access to primary source material which would otherwise be too voluminous for easy consumption in an introductory setting. While scholars may debate the correctness of some of the translation, that is an issue for almost any translated text. Hence, I utilize this text myself in teaching Aquinas and highly recommend it to others looking for their first exposure to the Angelic Doctor's supreme achievment.
A very clear and concise translation!.......1998-12-14
For those of us who do not have the time to physically sit down and read all five books of the Summa, this is most certainly the closest you will come to consuming the real thing! I found this after I had began to read the first few chapters and nothing comes so close to capturing the essence of Aquinas's writings so thouroughly (and in only a sixth of the size of the original)! This book is a must for the true Thomistic scholar!

There are workbook problems for every major topic normally taught in an engineering or technical drawing course. Most of the problems can be drawn with instruments or sketched. a special emphasis has been put on freehand sketching in this workbook in response to the increased use of CAD in many technical drawing courses. Customer Reviews:
A Priceless Gift!.......2006-05-10
This book is a remarkable achievement. Swami Kriyananda has succeeded splendidly in presenting his early life from such an objective and universal perspective that every reader can see himself and his own life in Kriyananda's experiences. Afterward, he presents his guru Yogananda, his guru's teachings, and his life with him in such intimate detail that the reader can visualize himself there also. For anyone like me who wishes he had been alive when Yogananda walked this earth, this book is a priceless gift. There is so much here in these pages, that it is impossible to convey it in a short review. All I can say is, if you are interested in yoga, Yogananda, or spiritual truths, you should get The Path. You will not be disappointed.
A more comprehensive sequel.......2004-11-26
There was too little information in 'The Autobiography of a Yogi'. That book was intended to paint a picture of what a genuine Indian saint happens to be. The story of the long and painful struggle (over lifetimes) that led to his present perfection was left implicit, for the intelligent reader to fathom through what was written between the lines.
'The Autobiography of a Yogi' was among the first books that a genuine saint from India has written, in which he has taken up the subject of himself and his own blossoming on a personal note. 'The Path' takes off where 'The Autobiography....' ends. The spirit of Yogananda shines palpably throughout this book, finding concrete embodiment in the story of the making of Kriyananda. The guru's greatness is seen through the eyes of a true devotee in a living narrative, filled with humor and gladness, without seeking to deny the existence of negativity of any kind. It is a book laden with joy, the joy of service, the joy of meditation, the simple, basic joy of existence.
The total involvement of Yogananda with the people who had entrusted themselves to his care has been beautifully depicted in the many personal stories that are strewn throughout the book. An attempt is also made to give the reader, a glimpse of the total picture of events that Yogananda saw, and which Kriyananda had access to, due to his proximity with him. However, self- glorification (even in the reflected light of his guru) is the last thing one could accuse the author of.
The later parts of the book talk of the hard test faced by the author when he was cast out of the organization to which he had given his life. This part has been written without any bitterness and self pity. It does not put the blame on anyone and can provide a real ray of hope to those who have been through a similar kind of 'dark night of the soul', when he was tempted even to question his guru. It is a part I have come back to read again and again at different periods of crisis in my own life. Each time I have found sustenance.
This book is well complemented by 'Conversations with Yogananda'. Together these books make one of the greatest saints of our time relevant and accessible to minds anchored in the technologically advanced but spiritually stunted twentieth century.
A book everyone should read.......2002-11-30
This is one of the best books I've ever read. Donald Walters {Swami Kriyananda} makes God not only more understandable, but treats Him in a manner we don't always see; as a friend and mentor, a constant loving companion who is enjoying His grand drama of life and death, pleasure and pain, good and bad, through each one of us. {Actually I should have said enjoying Herself, As Walters often speaks of God as the Divine Mother, the feminine aspect of Divinity}.
If you have read "The Autobiography of a Yogi" by Paramhansa Yogananda, "The Path"is the perfect companion piece, for it pictures Yogananda as Yogananda himself could not, as a being of pure Light and Divinity, a Yogi-Christ walking amongst us. If you have yet to read Yogananda's autobiography, it will be next on your list.
Believe me, the God spoken of in the "The Path" is a God we can all relate to. A warm, personal God, full of love and compassion for each one of us. A God of Ecstatic Bliss of whom we are all part; our seeming separation only a minor, and very temporary circumstance. A God who is gently bringing each of us, step-by-step, back to our true home in the ever new joy of pure Spirit. [The new edition of this book is entitled "The Path: One Man's Quest on the Only Path There Is."]
Yogananda's student.......2002-01-23
This book gives further insight into Yogananda's life and teachings. It is written by one of his main students, who spent much personal time with him, and assisted Yogananda in putting his writings into finished form. Kriyananda (the author's spiritual name) tells how he, as a westerner, finds his spiritual path, and what he goes through as he follows it It is well written and enjoyable.
Ideal for serious yoga students and followers of Yogananda........1998-08-29
I have always wanted to know more about Yogananda, and this book certainly provides it, in detail. Whereas Yogananda talked about the miracles involved with eastern mysticism in his "Autobiography of a Yogi", Kriyananda shows the western world how one can bring the higher principles of yoga into practical manifestation. This book gives a first-hand account of what it was like to live with one of the great masters of yoga (Yogananda)and all its challenging implications. Anyone who is interested in yoga or the spiritual path will find this book inspiring. What is even more fascinating is how Kriyananda went on to selflessly serve his guru through the creation of the Ananda World Brotherhood Colony. It is obvious that Yogananda and Kriyananda are very close and that Yogananda has been able to "continue" many of his visions for society through the willing instrument of Kriyananda. This in itself lends inspiration and encouragement for one's own spiritual path.

Paramahansa Yogananda's disciple shares loving memories.......2000-11-05
Donald Walters (Swami Kriyananda) makes you feel as if you were there during Yogananda's (Autobiography of a Yogi) years in America when he brought Eastern philosophy to Western minds. The story of Walter's spiritual journey is touching and readable. His perspective is more familiar, since he is an American, and his honesty about the obstacles he faced is inspiring. The book has many new pictures not published in SRF material.
