Book Description

Bloomsday is the American sequel to James Joyce´s Ulysses. Bloomsday brings to life in America the enduring epic poem of Homer´s Odyssey and the rich Irish saga of Joyce´s Ulysses with a tale set in mid-June of 1974 on the streets of Boston shared by the American immigrant descendants of Leopold and Molly Bloom, and Stephen Dedalus of Dublin. Bloomsday is the epic of Rudy Bloom of 27 Charles Street on Beacon Hill to prevail in the crucible of everyday life in his wandering and homecoming after an Irish wake for Tim Finnegan, where Rudy first encounters Harvard Professor, Dr. Thomas Dedalus. From Harvard Square, Beacon Hill and Haymarket Square to Copley Square, the Back Bay and Boston´s notorious Combat Zone, Bloomsday is a tragicomic tale spun as jazz riffs improvising nimbly upon the bass lines of the greatest epic of antiquity and the most celebrated novel of the 20th century. Lentz sheds new light in the pixels of his innovative, comedic style upon the immortal themes of love, duty and brotherhood told with a deep abiding respect for the timeless masterpieces on the legendary wandering home of Odysseus after the fall of Troy.

4 out of 5 stars A Rollicking Romp 'round Boston.......2004-12-17

I thoroughly enjoyed this new book by David Lentz, which shows a mastery in having fun with characters placed in a locale well known to the author. There's no absence of local color here as his protagonists prance from Beacon Hill to the market place at Faneuil Hall, stopping unceasingly at historic watering holes along the way. His main picaresque character alternates between Irish charm and disgusting, disillusioning existence.

But Lentz, amidst the revelry in a good story, manages to ask some poignant questions about love and friendship, family, profession, and historic burdens in this Boston of the 21st century with its ever-present 17th, 18th and 19th century overhang.

If you've ever been to Boston or even if you haven't you'll enjoy this romp.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-09-10

This is a great novel with great characters - the only problem is that we know from the family tree at the rear of the book that King Javan's year is not going to be a happy ending. As always Katherine's characters are her strength and even the bad guys are much more than cardboard cut outs.
Highly recommend this triology

4 out of 5 stars Evil overcomes Good.......2003-09-14

The second volume of the 'The Heirs of Saint Camber' series this volume tells anther depressing tale of treachery and evil overcoming good. At the end most of the good characters are killed including the main character so much of the book is spent developing. Even though I had trouble just finishing the book it's still highly recommended. If you haven't read one of Kurtz's Deryni books the setting is a medieval human kingdom with a human race, the Deryni, that have magic-like powers. Most of the series plots revolves around ordinary human - Deryni conflict. If you haven't read any Deryni books start with either 'Deryni Rising' the first book written or 'Camber of Culdi' the chronologically first Deryni book written.

5 out of 5 stars The eternal battle between good and evil........2002-12-28

I am in a love/hate relationship with this book. The book was so well written you quickly become attached to the characters and fall in love with them. You find a continuation of events from previous novels accompanied by new developments. This of course leaves you wanting more. It is for all of these reasons that I loved the book.

I hate this book for only one reason, and it directly correspondes with my fast growing love for the characters and how and when King Javan's Year comes to an end. A must read, but be prepared for tears.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite of all the deryni novels.......2002-10-29

I believe this was the first of the Deryni novels that i read, so perhaps my fondness for the book stems from that. I knew nothing about the Deryni, the history of the Eleven Kingdoms, or the Regency; but this world drew me in and kept me there.

If you have read any of the Deryni novels and have looked at the Haldane lineage, you know how long Javan lived and served as king. From the title "King Javan's Year", you have an idea what is going to happen.

In so many fantasy novels, the main characters are treated lightly and make it through and they save the day. In the Deryni novels, things are much darker for the protagonists and what surprised me was how vicious things were against Javan. Through all of this darkness, the light of who Javan is shines through and I really cared what happened to him and was somewhat upset at how this ended...

I suppose that is the mark of a good writer, that you can be drawn into the the world and care about the characters. The characters i care the most about, though, are those who are earliest in the timeline (Joram, Evaine, Camber, Javan, etc)...i really hope Katherine Kurtz returns to the earlier times of the Eleven Kingdoms. Until that day, i will continue to read about Camber and his children.

4 out of 5 stars Like this Deryni book.......2002-10-06

This is one of the Deryni books that is still set in the Cambrian age, that is during the life of, or shortly after the death of St Camber MacRorie. The Haldane heirs have returned, thanks to Camber and his family, and taken over from the declining and nasty Festil Kings. King Cinhil, the former monk, was succeed by the eldest of his twin sons, the sickly and weak-willed boy King Alroy, now King Alroy's brother, young Javan takes the throne and must fight the forces that threaten Deryni and justice alike. Javan is remarkably intelligent and knows what the fight is about, but he suffers from a club foot which makes ignoramuses and plotters alike whisper that he is cursed and unfit for the throne. Add to that the instigations of a nasty Archbishop (this is a pro-pagan/pro-celtic series) charged with "protecting the King" and you'll see that Javan and his MacRorie allies have their work cut out for them.

5 out of 5 stars The Perils of Existential Theology.......2001-03-02

This is an in depth study of the work of three Protestant theologians who were supportive of the Nazi regime. The author contrasts them with Karl Barth, Rudolph Bultmann, Paul Tillich, and Dietrich Bonhoffer, all of whom opposed Hitler.

The introductory chapter entitled "The Crisis" is particularly valuable. It places the thought of all of these German theologians in the intellectual stream of Luther, the Enlightenment, German idealism, theories of history, and especially existentialism (Kierkegaard) and dialectical theology with its stress on the infinite distance between God and humans. This latter teaching creates a problem in conceptualizing how God's actions intersect with human history.

Ericksen highlights the irrational element in the prevailing intellectual cllimate of the time and documents the powerful influence of the concept of the German "Volk," especially in the theology of Hirsch.

Although the author agrees that in hindsight and on the basis of their actions we can distinguish between these three theologians and their counterparts who opposed Nazism, he is not certain that their theology alone accounts for for their welcoming of the Third Reich. It is just too similar to the theology of those who opposed Hitler. Nor is the author certain that this kind of theology could prevent a recurrance of the phenomenon of theologians supporting a totalitarian or dictatorial regime in some future time of crisis.

"The connecting link between the broader intellectual crisis of the twentieth century and the circumstances of modern theology is that both secular and religious intellectuals in this age must ultimately rely upon an existential leap of faith. This was the fate of Croce, Durkheim and Weber as well as Barth, Bultmann and Tillich. In terms of value judgments, the problem with existentialism is that it is morally neutral. A leap of faith towards Hitler is no less valid than a leap of faith away from him." (p. 24)

All in all, Ericksen paints a thoughtful portrait of three brilliant and enigmatic theologians. He also gives us reason to question whether current theologians would do any better when faced with a similar crisis.

4 out of 5 stars Good Recipes, but not tip-top on fun or speed........2006-06-24

`Every-Night Cooking' by the editors and writers of `Bon Appetit' magazine is a rather ordinary looking book trying to cash in on the Rachael Ray genre of cooking instruction for people who do not necessarily like to cook or have not really put their mind to `how to cook', but still need to cook on most nights. And, as much as I tend to ignore Rachael Ray's books for my own cooking, I have to say that this is the sort of thing she does so much better than we see in this book.

The book's introduction tries to build up enthusiasm for the task by likening cooking to a game, which I can go for in a big way, since I have often compared learning cooking to learning the game of Chess. This reveals the first problem I have with the book. Unlike the real home cooking boosters such as Ms. Rachael, Jamie Oliver, Emeril Lagasse, Nigella Lawson, and even Martha Stewart, this book seems to convey little `joi-de-vivre' that I get every time I read a Jamie Oliver book.

The seventeen page introductory section gives advice on all sorts of incidentals such as what to have in the pantry, what equipment to buy, how to plan menus, how to clean up, menu planning, grilling, and feeding kids! Some of these subjects can easily require whole books in themselves. Grilling alone can fill a library, and yet grilling is not something one will typically do in `every-night cooking'. The lists of pantry items and cooking tools violates in two different ways one of my cardinal rules in the kitchen. That is, never, never, buy an ingredient or tool unless you have specific plans to actually make a dish which needs that ingredient or tool in the next day or two, and you know you will have time to make it and not put it off until the `use by' date expires on the package! I can back that up with the fact that none other than the great Indian cooking writer, Madhur Jaffrey said the identical thing on an appearance on the old `In Martha's Kitchen' show. For equipment, I can cite Alton Brown's great book on kitchen equipment that encourages one to keep things simple and weed out anything you don't use regularly.

The pantry list on page 10 of this book has many things I don't stock and several things I never use. To be sure, the authors don't tell us to go out and get one of everything. I say ignore the list entirely and only get stuff as you need them and sooner or later, if you get one extra of long lasting staples, you will build up a pantry suitable to your tastes.

The `Essential Equipment' list on page 13 is even more insidious in that it would have us all run out and buy well over a thousand dollars worth of countertop hogs such as a countertop blender, a heavy-duty stand mixer, a food processor, and a microwave oven. I will suggest that with good knife skills and no more than three very good, very sharp knives, one can easily make everything in this book with no more than a good hand-held mixer. And, if you are good with a whisk, you probably can get away without that, since there are no pureed soup recipes in this book. Even in the knife department, the list calls for too much. It suggests several paring knives. I have only one at hand in the kitchen, and I use that even less than I use the bread knife.

What we see in this book is lots of miscellaneous information, but nothing on `how to cook'! The book would be a lot more valuable if all this introductory material (except for the advice on cleaning up) were replaced with 20 pages on ingredient preparation, primarily on knife skills.

In general, I believe the recipes here are very good, consistent with the fact that they were published in a major national magazine with expert culinary and copy editing staffs to pick over the recipes and guarantee that they will turn out well in the average kitchen with an amateur cook. I am not impressed, however, with the `Do-Ahead' feature, as I find this inconsistent with the lifestyle of people who are looking for easy meal preparation. A person responsible for making tonight's meal for four will come home at 5:30 PM or later and see the make-ahead suggestion and move on to the next recipe, as this is a sure indication that the recipe will take more time than they have before the family teenagers start complaining of imminent starvation!

The variations feature, especially when the variation is a suggestion of an alternative primary ingredient is much better. The book would have been better if more were done with this feature. Another way to improve the book would have been to use the technique adapted by Ms. Rachael in her newest book, `Express Lane', where she divides up ingredients by pantry items and fresh items. This really fits my strategy of building up your pantry only by actually making dishes and stocking up on pantry items for these recipes.

So, I suspect that many of the recipes in this book are not exactly fast and the book simply does not succeed in conveying a sense of fun. A fine exemplar of `fun cooking' would be `Rick and Lanie's Excellent Kitchen Adventures' by Rick and Lanie Bayless.

If you find this book at a deep discount, its recipes make it a worthwhile purchase. Otherwise, it is just a bit thin and does not fulfill the promise on its cover.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Weeknight Dinners!.......2002-10-01

This book is fabulous. I found a copy from the library, tried a new recipe every night for a week, loved them and had to own the book. This book is for those of us who want a great home cooked meal but can only devote an hour of our time to it. Another nice thing about Every-Night Cooking is that anyone can follow the recipe and make a great meal. You don't need any exotic ingredients or equipment. My husband and I are moving to Germany in a few months, and this will be the cook book I pack in my carry-on while we wait for the rest of our stuff to arrive!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for "Every-Night" Cooking not Entertaining!.......2002-08-01

I disagree with the other reviewers who said this cookbook was boring and a waste of money. The cookbook is called "Every-Night Cooking" which does not mean time-consuimg fabulous meals for entertaining! I subscribe to Bon Appetit and love to cook, but I don't always have the time to spend 4 to 6 hours creating a masterpiece. This book is not fancy, but is perfect for quick family meals when you when don't have a plethora of time.

          4 out of 5 stars A Great Book!.......2002-07-08

I realize that sometimes you want a cookbook that will push the limits, and show you no creative bounds. Other times you want a book that will just outline some simple recipes that you could make at the drop of a hat or simply don't feel like pulling out all the stops, and you know that they will be good. This is that book.

2 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected From Bon Appetit.......2002-03-27

I anxiously await Bon Appetit's cookbooks. They are typically very good for someone like myself who enjoys cooking as a hobby but also loves tasting food. The recipes in this particular book were SOOO basic/boring, I was disappointed! The majority of the recipes were something I could have come up with after not having gone grocery shopping for three weeks! If you're looking for BASIC-BASIC, I guess this is okay--kinda like "How to Make a Sandwich-101. But not for someone who thoroughly enjoys the art of cooking and entertaining. Sorry, Bon Appetit--I'll still buy your yearly cookbooks, though--they are wonderful!

                Book Description

The cases are edited and translated by the prominent legal scholar, arbitrator and lawyer Dr. Mohie Eldin I. Alam-Eldin. His in-depth commentary on the thirty-four cases included in this volume encompasses discussion of emerging new arbitral trends and principles, such as the alter ego and contra preferentum doctrines, and new approaches to arbitration engendered by the ever-growing and changing practices and patterns of international trade. He also analyses many of the new issues raised by the decisions of the court of appeal in cases where arbitral awards proved unsatisfactory. Many of these court of appeal decisions are included in the text, as are relevant decisions of the Supreme Court of Egypt.

This second series of cases brought before the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration covers the period 1997-2002, years which witnessed a major growth in confidence in the Centre and a corresponding expansion in scope, procedure, and legal principles. Perhaps most notable among these important developments is the evolution of hybrid procedures that permit the harmonization of legal cultures among parties. In this book will be found a number of cases which successfully blend common law, civil law, and Sharia principles while rigorously adhering to the agreements between the parties, all applicable law, and guarantees of defence.

3 out of 5 stars Surprising and Disappointing.......2006-04-19

Catherine Ponder's earlier books are the foundation of any new thought library and the basis of many propserity studies. I have read them all and find them both engaging and effective. This, her autobiography is, alas, as disapointing as it is surprising.

The author opens her book as a "Washington Girl", a young woman assigned a clerical job in the nation's capitol as part of the war effort. She writies to a handsome young soldier of her acquaintance and marries him over the objections of her southern family and his liberal and somewhat licentious mother. That marriage lasted only long enough to produce Richard, her only child. She returns to her family, apparently eschewing any effort to collect child support from the child's father and becomes a secretary for a prominent attorney. She then embarks on a program of what she terms "self-improvement" offered by the Unity Church, ultimately becoming an ordained minister.

While assigned to a church in Alabama, she meets the man who is to become her second husband, the handsome and affectionate Kelly Ponder. Eventually, they marry and she moves to Texas to be with him and to begin working on her writing. He dies suddenly and unexpectedly. She how ever, carries on, continuing her pastoral duties , her writing and her seminars. She grows more and more successful, attracting many celebrities with her teachings. She finally marries her third husband who apparently is not really her type physically but wins her with his determination, persistence and generositiy. That marriage ends in divorce, some years after they move to California and start her global ministry.

The book is written in a flat and unemotional style that fails to engage. One gets the impression that Rev. Ponder did not really wish to share the intimate details of her life. However, the ones she chose to share depict a shallow and sonewhat insensitive woman. At one point, she suggests that Kelly, who appears to be her only true love, died because he planned to move to Florida and end her both her pastoral and writing career. She frequently refers to her publisher as a "Yankee" and seems to take umbrage at his suggestions and characterizes them as bias against her Southern background and upbringing. Although claiming that she is not personally interested in celebrity, the reader is treated to paragraphs of the famous people she has met, who have used her books, lived in her neighborhoods or owned the mansions she subsequently purchased. But perhaps most disturbing is her treatment of her son. There is no doubt that she loves him but it appears that he was deposited with her parents for substantial periods of his life. His antics, which range from eavesdropping and selling the overheard information to monitoring the ushers at church, are typified as characteristics of a free spirit as opposed to signs of a troubled personality. She appears to resent people who comment on her expensive clothes and lifestyle. I waas surprised at her protestations and anger when she teaches that poverty is a sin and good people can have great things and should enjoy these great things. Although it appears that Richard becamse a banker there is little mention of him after his high school years.

This is the first and only Ponder book I have not enjoyed. It seems that she really did not want to tell and I really didn't need to know.

5 out of 5 stars She lives and practices what she writes!.......2005-08-21

When I knew Dr. Ponder, she was Catherine Thrower, and she had not yet married Kelly Ponder. She and her son Richard lived in the Unity Church on Highland Avenue in Birmingham, Alabama. They were the Gold Dust Twins, as far as I am concerned, and probably still are!! Richard's favorite saying was Honey, Honey, give me some money!! He never walked when he could run! Catherine always looked like a million. I am sure at that time that she was not paid a lot, but you would not have known it. Sh kept her mind's eye on richness all around her, and it manifested. She absolutely has done every thing she writes about, has proved it. You can too. You will love reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing story by an amazing woman.......2003-07-17

Catherine Ponder is absolutely one of my most favorite New Thought writers. Her books are uplifting, affirming and she instills such hope and confidence in oneself that one does come away feeling that one "can do it"!

Ponder's life story is amazing on many levels and she never seemed to give up when life handed her yet another challenge. With her faith and trust in God, she embraced each and every challenge and kept going, climbing even higher in the process.

Meeting Kelly Ponder in her first assigned Unity church in Alabama, it would be another ten years or so before they would fall in love and marry. Their relationship was truly a soul mate union and they fostered each other's growth in tremendous ways, leading Catherine to develop and grow another Unity Church in Austin, Texas. Kelly's unexpected and untimely death was a shock to read, but through the rest of the book, one feels the love and guidance from Kelly to Catherine from the other side throughout her life. Catherine went on to establish more Unity Churches and each one of them has grown and prospered and still continues to this day.

Catherine's life story is so uplifting, so amazing and so lived with faith and trust. Her example to us is quite incredible. I have read 4 of her other books and am thirsting for all the other ones! She writes to the reader and provides so many examples of others putting her affirmations and suggestions into action and experiencing life changing results. Her words of encouragement, her examples of affirming prosperity, as well as her unwavering trust and faith in God are constant reminders to us all that we can do it all as well.

This is truly a prosperity love story on many levels. Catherine Ponder is one amazing lady, and she has blessed us with her many books on achieving all that we want to achieve. Our fear is our limitation to our achieving our success. Catherine lovingly shows us how to get rid of that fear.

A wonderful book from a most wonderful lady! The reader is also treated to pictures of Catherine and Kelly as well as her son. I highly recommend this book to all who are searching. One cannot help but be uplifted after reading a Ponder book! I so eagerly look forward to the next one! Keep them coming, Ms. Ponder, they are so needed!!!

5 out of 5 stars Stars Fell on Alabama.......2003-06-27

For Catherine Ponder fans, this is pure gold! Though we have seen the widom, kindness, and faith of Catherine Ponder in her other works, this book is our first glimpse into her personal life. As usual, Rev. Ponder omits "personal" details--including her maiden name! But we see the development of her gifts as a writer, minister, and pioneer through her eyes -- from a "government girl" in WWII to the founder of her global ministry in Palm Desert.
In her memoir, Rev. Ponder shows her determination, gentleness, and Southern heritage most openly in her recollections of her romance and marriage to Kelly Ponder, now deceased. After she asked for guidance from God, she decided to take her first ministerial assignment in a Unity church in Birmingham, Alabama, where Kelly Ponder lived. "I knew for sure I was on my way into a new life," she says, when she heard the song "Stars Fell on Alabama." It was love at first sight for them both, though it would be 10 years before they married since both were building careers.
"A Prosperity Love Story" will make you laugh, cry, and go to work, all at once.
