Book Description
In the immediate aftermath of World War I, Hugh Thurne, a British diplomat involved in the peace negotiations, decides to flee to his second home in Venice rather than return to his wife and the charade of his marriage in London. Although profoundly disturbed about the long-term prospects for peace, he has faith in the city's power to raise his spirits. Hugh eagerly looks forward to visits with his old friends Giacomo and Valentina Venier in their dilapidated palazzo on the Grand Canal; to dallying with a young opera singer, Emanuela; and to the arrival of Violet Mancroft, the widow of his best friend lost in the war. What he does not anticipate is the shadow lying over the Venier family's future. Nor has he reckoned with the vagaries of his own human heart. Evoking the beauty of Venice, By the Grand Canal is a novel about premonition for the future and the war it portends, about death and memory, and also about an unexpected love between two old friends.

Fine literature for the here and now........2007-01-30
Another reviewer has done an excellent job of explaining the fundamentals of William Riviere's remarkable work. I wish to add my vote to recommend By the Grand Canal as a work of great modern literature, full of subtle shades of meaning and emotion. The writing itself is beautiful, reminiscent of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited. Characters are fully developed and real, as is the time and place which they inhabit. Yes, you can smell the fetid canals and decaying palaces of early 20th Century Venice in nearly every scene. Moreover, the impact of a most horrible war, vile and nearly meaningless, shadows over the entire progress of events. Through analysis of past and present, an epiphany of future is revealed, and despite hopes to the contrary, not a peaceful and promising future. What is really important? How many wars have really been necessary? Some to be sure, but in retrospect, not many. The deaths of uncounted multitudes amounted to little but their crying for remembrance and warnings of the future.
where has this book been hiding?.......2006-05-07
I can't believe I'm the first reviewer or that I found this in the shelves at my local bookstore by accident. Sometimes you get lucky. This is a gem of a novel set in Venice at the end of the First World War. The story centers around three friends and their families. Hugh is a British diplomat, Giacomo is a Venetian lawyer, and Philip, a landowner and politician in England, was killed in the last days of the war in Mesopotamia (read Iraq). The themes running throughout are love, death and the meaning of time as it relates to the first two. The author evokes the period in effective ways; not just descriptions of fashions or cars, but in what life was like then. Hugh struggles with depression, for which there was no effective medical treatment. He fights to understand his mood changes. Giacomo has had a heart attack and appears to suffer from congestive heart failure. Today, much could be done. Then, nothing. Giacomo seems like a man today in his late eighties, but in reality he is fifty. In those days that was old. There is discussion of the African colonies and the atrocities seen by a cousin of the family while serving there. The "war to end all wars" devastated ordinary people. Venice is full of maimed beggars on church steps who are war veterans. The terrible situation of war widows left with no means is illustrated by Donatella, a relative of Giacomo's housekeeper. The older generation hopes their children will have a brighter future in the 1920s and beyond. The readers know that Mussolini and Hitler are lurking around the corner and that an even worse war is already in the making. The book seems to say that happiness is always temporary, it comes to an end. On the other hand, as some of the characters find out, happiness in the past also remains with you.
This book takes you to Venice and keeps you there until the last page. It was a pleasure to read and a beautiful, thoughtful story.
Book Description
By the Grand Canal is an exquisite novel redolent of Venice and the haze of WWI from William Rivière, the author of the award-winning Kate Caterina. In the aftermath of the First World War, Hugh Thurne, a British diplomat involved in the peace negotiations, finds solace in his rented palazzo in Venice rather than returning to his wife and the charade of his marriage in London. An Atmospheric But Slow Moving Novel Set in Venice.......2005-09-07
The scene is Venice, 1919 at the end of World War I. English diplomat and man about town, Hugh Thurne arrives in Venice to contemplate his dying marriage and his future. There he socializes with old friends Giacomo and Valentina Venier and their two teenage children. Giacomo, whose roots in Venice go back centuries is dying. His finances are in decline and he is struggling to maintain his parental palazzo. Into this mix comes the beautiful Violet Mancroft, recently widowed when her husband was killed in the war, and her teenage son. Her deceased husband, Phillip was a close friend of both Hugh and Giacomo who are both godfathers to her son Robert. These friends have invited Violet to Venice to console and help her. Nothing much happens in the novel other then lunches, dinners and gondola rides. The author leads us to believe that a romance may develop between Hugh and Violet, but nothing happens. The most that happens in this novel is a nascent romance between Robert and Giacomo's daughter. The characters do a lot of reflecting upon their lives. If plot is important to you don't bother with this book. The pace is languid. But if you are a lover of Venice the atmospheric elements of the novel may appeal to you. Otherwise this book is much ado about absolutely nothing.

Confusing.......2001-02-21
While readers who are familiar with the universe that these stories are set in might be thrilled with this book, I found it very hard to get into it. This is one of the first books that I read by Norton and had bought it mostly because one of my all time favorite author, Cherryh, was a contributing author. Unfortunately, I found the stories dry and not very engaging. As works of fantasy, they are average...I think that if I was more familiar with witch world, I would have enjoyed it more.
Riveting...a must for WW fans!.......1998-03-09
Boyer, Cherryh, Pierce and Tarr capture WW well in these stories set in Ms. Norton's beloved realm. Very satisfying for us who have been there from the beginning and a must for her fans, fans of the WW and genre followers alike. Worth looking for. Worth adding to your library!

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Araminta Station's setting is one of a planet so uniquely beautiful
that the number of people allowed on the planet is incredibly
rigorously enforced.
The small number of people there does leave said population
vulnerable to crime. This, of course, happens. Vance has designed
another weird and whacky society for trouble and strife to happen in,
again centred around a young male protagonist.
Hm. Not my cup of tea, I'm afraid........2007-05-06
Vance comes highly recommended, both by friends and critics alike. I had been told that the Cadwal Chronicles were a good place to begin, so I found a copy of Araminta Station in a second-hand store and decided to give it a read.
First of all, I do want to say that the book was strongly plotted and I very much like his voice as an author. There's a raised eyebrow behind every sentence. The arch dialogue style is distinctive and often very nice. (It does, however, take some getting used to.)
What I stumbled over was the character development. Vance seems to posit a kind of natural aristocracy that is based in merit, competition, and a kind of straight-forward folksy common sense. Characters not cast in that mold are invariably flighty, useless, parasitic or (at best) extremely unreliable. In the Cadwal universe there is a people called the Yips who are childish yet violent and stupid/smart in a cunning kind of way (steotype much?), and apparently devoid of morality. I kept waiting (child of our relativist time as I am) for the main character Glawen to realize that they only had stereotypes of the Yips as being that feckless and that *really* they have their own culture which should be respected. Nope. Pretty much every character in the book is exactly what they seem. No surprises and ultimately (for me) no real depth.
And yeah, I also had a problem with both the female characters (sweet and lovely Young Things or evil man-hungry/hating witches) and the politics. Vance writes very approvingly of frontier justice, and any characters who oppose it are back to being feckless stupid aristocratic liberals.
I'm torn, really, about how to review this book. I think that if you like a world with social and moral absolutes then Vance might be exactly the writer you are looking for. His skill level is high, and I can clearly see his influence on later writers. Myself, I will not be running to read anything else.
(If I have it wrong, and this isn't typical Vance, then feel free to suggest something else to try in the comments.)
God-awful.......2006-12-10
What's good:
The plot is very strong.
What's bad:
Appallingly clunky writing: the dialogue is particularly awful.
Characterisation so bad it's almost autistic.
Very dated attitudes to race and sex: I looked at the front of the books to see when it was written, expecting it to be pre-WWI - turned out to be 1985!
On the race side, as baddies we've got the old "race of humans who all behave the same, have no morals, are grasping and stupid yet cunning" motif. Nice.
On the sex side there's a very casual attitude to rape, and particularly poor characterisation of the women in the story: all the female characters are either perfect angels or deviant baddies.
Although, to be fair on the rape point, it's not just rape that's taken lightly; the whole book has a strangely casual attitude to murder and death as well - are we really meant to believe that, after the murder (and rape) of a teenage girl, her little sister (aged about 10) is making witty banter and helping solve the murder the next day? Maybe she'd need time to, I don't know, grieve a little? Seems like the author isn't really trying to treat his characters with any seriousness.
Pretty obvious why this one has gone out of print - don't bother finding it second-hand. It's put me off reading any more Jack Vance.
Vance in Vance form.......2005-11-02
"Araminta Station" has a large cast of spirited characters, a plot with enough complexity to match "Dune", an array of bizarre human and alien behaviors and a tone that's one hundred percent Jack Vance. This adventure takes us to the planet Cadwal, which was permanently placed under the control of the Naturalist Society to preserve its great natural beauty. The official charter limits it to 240 inhabitants and their families, divided into six bureaus and structured on a rigid social system. Everyone knows their place, or at least is supposed to. But as usual, problems develop. A young officer named Glawen Glattuc finds himself dealing with family feuds, dangerous rivalries, political intrigue and a major crime spree while also swimming through the confusing currents of adolescent life, which remain quite similar on any planet.
Any detailed discussion would rob you of the delights of discovering this novel's twists and turns for yourself. I can, however, hit some of its main strengths. Of course at 554 pages in hardback, "Araminta Station" is longer than a typical Vance outing. Vance makes good use of this space. The plot is full of surprises, as entirely new aspects arise at the most unexpected moments. Moreover, Vance fully incorporates everything in the story. For instance we have the Yips, a race living on a remote island who perform the menial labor on Cadwal. They have a society packed with Vance-style weirdness (celebrating the foul odor known as the "Big Chife" and charging tourists money to see women doing the laundry) but also a role in the story. Yip maneuvers pop up to complicate life for the Clattucs at the most inconvenient times. (The Yip element also provides a surprising degree of relevancy in an age when we Americans all claim to hate illegal Mexican immigrants yet willingly enjoy the cheap labor that they provide.)
Dominating it all, however, is the unmistakable Jack Vance tone. Unmistakable, I say, yet who can really pinpoint precisely how Vance makes his voice so unique? We can say this much. In "Araminta Station", as in any Vance book, the heroes are a small handful of tough, intelligent, resourceful and clever individuals. Arrayed against them we find all manner of inferiors: murderers, criminals, con artists, ostentatious braggarts, political loons, religious fanatics, the petty, the weak and the stupid. A decently large chunk of the book shows us the good guys dealing with this scum. Vance's heros, if not sarcastic, are at least single-minded in the way they push through the rabble to do what must be done. The wit and wisdom of Vance lies in communication. How do people at cross purposes interact with each other? What happens when conversation becomes more like a battle? Almost every page of "Araminta Station" produces a notable quote. Here are a few:
"Whatever you have heard about me, dismiss it. I do not regard my class as a confrontation between the clear light of my intellect and twenty-two examples of sloth and willful stupidity. The exact number may be only half that, if we are lucky, and of course varies from term to term. Despite all, I am a kindly man, patient and thorough, but if I must elucidate the obvious more than twice, I often become gloomy." (p. 228)
"You are a willful young devil. If insolence were bricks and insubordination were mortar you could build a great palace for yourself." (p. 351)
Glawen said, "I believe that safety is important. It is better to arrive alive than dead."
"This is exactly my point," said Bant. "I have explained this to Esmer: what is the value of thirty minutes, more or less, to a corpse? He is already late and no longer in a hurry. The time is more useful on this side of the veil, such is my belief." (p. 491)
"The theft of this cloak from Arles' room will cause consternation but no surprise, and Arles will learn to dress more modestly in the future."
Kirdy gave a dry chuckle. "Arles might even volunteer his cloak, were he asked."
"Possibly, but when one asks permission, one often gets no for an answer. As it is, Arles has not specifically forbidden us the cloak, which is good enough for me." (p. 250)
A light masterwork.......2005-06-09
It looks as if this novel has been thoroughly reviewed by others already, as is only right. I'll just add that I am amazed by Vance's ability to create so many distinctive and funny characters. I have no idea how he does it. There is nothing forced about his humor; it flows naturally with the story. It seems like such an unknown skill to write funny lines which truly sound like they belong to the characters rather than the author behind them.

Customer Reviews:
CHANGED MY LIFE.......2006-10-02
This is hands down the best book I have read on prayer and I have read many books. Lynne Hammond brings us back to whats REAL. It's easy to go through life praying without a real intimate relationship with our Heavenly Father. This causes prayer to become dead, dry and powerless. Christians many times give up on prayer leaving a vast void between themselves and God. People perish for a lack of knowledge. When we truly know our Father and go to that secret place in prayer with Him, our prayer life becomes more powerful than we could ever have imagined. I have given this book as a gift around 13 times. Do yourself a favor and order it!!!
Not just another book on prayer.......2006-06-13
There really is a better way than just praying a list or the needs we see. For pray-ers at any level who are interested in moving higher in prayer.
Best Book on Prayer!.......1999-11-09
This is such a great book about prayer. She puts powerful prayer into simpler terms, that shows how you can pray and make things happen!
An Extraordinary Book On Prayer.......1999-11-07
I am a new pastor who has taught and preached the word of God for over 14 years, and this is the finest book on prayer I have ever read. E.M. Bounds and Andrew Murray have great books on this subject, but this title by the wife of Pastor Mac Hammond has done more to energize my prayer life than anything I have ever encountered. The author has done her homework and can attest to these Biblical truths with practical down-to-earth experience. This book is a must for any pastor who finds prayer to be a dull, laborious affair. Blessings and agape for sister Lynne Hammond for lifting my spirit and changing my prayer life.

Taught me to cook!.......2007-04-16
This was a gift when I got married and could not boil eggs, over 30 years ago - to this day one of the recipes (chicken a la king) is my youngest son's favorite meal! I do hope that the recipe is still in the book! We would have starved without this well-written, simple cookbook! Thank goodness, a book for beginners!
Great cookbook for one or two people.......2007-04-11
This is a great cookbook. Lots of great recipes, broken up into breakfast, beef/pork, chicken/turkey, seafood, vegetarian, and dessert sections. It is not a huge cookbook, but has lots of variety. The recipes do not require too many ingredients and no hard-to-find ingredients like some other cookbooks. The recipes also have low fat or fast labels (or both) on them. This cookbook also has many pictures and nutritional breakdowns for every recipe. The only thing I do not like about this cookbook is some recipes often require lots of pots and pans and sometimes too many things going on at once (but I'm a beginner cook though). However, with practice, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. I've made about 10 recipes so far and loved every one! There was no review of this book when I bought it, so I was a little nervous, but very impressed!

I bought this for newlyweds and I thought the recipes were wonderful. I copied some of them for myself.
Great for 2!.......2007-01-04
I really enjoy this cookbook. It had some great ideas and good portions for 2 people. There were also plenty of illustrations which I always appreciate. I would definitely recommend this coobook.

Great Cooking for Two.......2005-12-05
I bought this soon after I got married, and have cooked many of the recipes in this very successfully. It really lives up to its title as is "Great Cooking For Two". The recipes are perfect for two. The breakfast cinnamon buns with caramel topping and nut filling was really amazing, very light textured, soft and absolutely yummy. Also the white cake with chocolate glaze is excellent. I have used the chocolate glaze recipe to ice many other cakes. Some favourite recipes are curried chicken salad in pita pockets, lemon chicken salad, pilaf primavera, garden pasta salad and spicy sausage in a potato pizza crust. Highly recommended.
Great cooking for Two!.......2005-09-27
I highly recommend this cookbook to anyone. The instructions are clear and the recipes are imaginative and delicious. This would be a perfect cookbook for a novice and a great addition to a seasoned cook's library.
Such a Great Book!.......2002-06-18
I love this cookbook. I bought it before getting married in 1998. Every recipe in it is a great recipe and it is so nice to only buy the ingrediants for two people. It helps the pocketbook and the recipes generally don't take longer than 30 minutes. I too think every Newlywed couple should have one. Sadly it's out of print and I won't be able to buy it for a good friend who's getting married. Like the other reviewer said, A used copy just won't do. I have looked at the new Better Homes & Gardens, "Cooking for Two", but it just doesn't have the pizzaz this one had.
Cooking for Two can be easily doubled for a party!.......2001-05-10
I received this as a wedding gift in '92 and it has been the one cookbook that I go back to again and again for quick, elegant and easy meals for my husband and I. Our favorites have been the herb rubbed pork loins, spinach stuffed pasta shells and the caraway potatoe chowder. Since we both work and travel a great deal, my rule for cooking tends to be that the meal must take 30 minutes or less to prepare/cook and also be easy on the wallet. The cookbook satisfies both criteria. In addition, I have gotten rave reviews on the Chicken Waldorf Salad that I normally prepare for luncheon gatherings, showers and parties. It's easy to multiply all the recipes in the book to suit a crowd.
My only regret is that the book is out of print. I was intending on giving it as a bridal gift to a young co-worker, but I am afraid a used copy will not do!
Desperately needed!.......1999-08-01
The thing I can't understand is why there are so few cookbooks with recipes that serve just two people. I mean, isn't the dual-income-no-kids couple the predominant target market in America today? Anyway, I got an earlier edition of this book as a gift back in '92, and it's been a godsend. The recipes are both right-sized and delicious (highlights for me are peppered beef steak with vinaigrette, beef roast with tomato-herb sauce, picatta-style pork, turkey with cranberry and fig chutney -- especially good for two people dining alone on Thanksgiving, mustard-topped halibut with apples, crispy baked potato wedges, creamy pasta with pecans, puffed oven pancake with spiced apple sauce, and strawberry shortcake; vegetarian recipes also included), and unlike the recipes in the archaic "Joy of Cooking," they're mostly very quick to prepare. This book also contains some incredibly useful charts, such as broiling and grilling times for meat, and shortcuts, such as a quickie buttermilk substitute using fresh milk and lemon juice. Every newlywed or cohabiting couple should have a copy.

Worth every penny and then some........2001-08-06
I got this cookbook along with several other "one-dish" or "quick" meal cookbooks and this one is by far the best. So far every meal I've cooked has been a winner. There are no recipes relying on cream of chicken soup or bread crumbs to make the meal. Although some people might consider some of the ingredients to be "exotic," I have yet to run into something I couldn't find at my local supermarket (I think things like tube polenta, feta cheese and kalamata olives are pretty standard food items now). None of the recipes require extensive prep or cooking time and every one I've tried has been delicious. The recipes are easily adaptable too -- I changed the recipe for a ground lamb and polenta dish to cubed chicken and the recipe still worked great. Tonight I made the salmon with tomato and olive sauce and it was a big hit. I can't praise this book highly enough!! Save your money on the other books until you read this one.
Almost two hundred recipes for one-dish meals.......2001-02-24
Almost two hundred recipes for one-dish meals blend from crockery cooker dishes to skillet stir-frys, savory pies and casseroles. The focus on hearty main courses makes for an important guide to daily meals while the color photos liberally accompanying the completed dishes prove useful for duplicating presentation effects. The emphasis on streamlining potentially time-consuming techniques - such as making a quiche crust from biscuit dough - is particularly inviting.

You know, it bugs me when people write reviews on cookbooks that say, "The recipes look great! I can't wait to try them!" I have used this book since we were "two". Now we are "five", the two of us and our three teenagers, and I still use this cookbook consistently. I just double or triple the recipes.
Our faves:
Chicken Pot Pies, Garden Swiss Steak, Dilled Salmon Macaroni Salad
My kids actually request the pot pies for their Birthday meals!! This book should definitely be republished. We love it.

Reward's for being creative........2000-08-26
I was searching for a way to create magical items with a mage and picked up this book and found it defines this and more. I was able to hunt for magical components and this book helped with the research factor.
I wanted to find a few off-the-wall components and this book helped to define a good way to do that. It was helpful in answer magic related questions about Mages and what an Enchanter is good for or an Invoker. This book is a must if you plan of playing or running Mages, it is very helpful.
Good book with spells and NWPs galore!.......2000-04-12
Spells & Magic is a good, well-written, fairly well organized book packed with spells for both wizards and preists, along with numerous NWPs.
Unique in the good way.......2000-01-09
Unlike "Skills and Powers" and "Combat and Tactics", "Spells and Magic" does not introduce a wholly new set of rules that the other two books in the series are infamous for. "Spells and Magic" so rarely deviates from the original rules and presents so much expanded materials ( rather than totally new), you will soon be immersed into the originality of the effort. While this is basically a second take on The Complete Wizard's Handbook, it accomplished its goals so much better and quicker that it has plenty of leftover space to introduce several new subdivisions of the magic-user class and many other useful innovations. My advise as for Spells and Magic? Opt for this rules expansion - steer clear of its comrades.
Very good book for all types of Spellcasters.......1999-10-07
This book is a great source of information for any type AD&D game, this book includes detailed info about all types of Spellcasters and includes too the system of Character Point's already seen in the Player Option's:Skills&Powers but expanded and woth more option's this time for all Spellcaster. There is a system that you can create your own spellcaster type and almost create a new class, by choosing it advantages, disadvantages special powers and special traits. The books also include a system and a table of critical hit caused by magic. The book is very interisting and very good it worth the price you pay. Get it if you can.
A necessary book to spells casters.......1999-07-09
The new spells and the new rules of this book made the mechanics of the game more realist and more "playable". An important acquisition for every spellcaster and most adventurers.

Fantastic. The best of its kind I've ever seen........1999-02-13
I have been a somewhat amateurish fan of Spanish Civil War graphics for at leat 15 years, and I've managed over the years to put together a reasonable collection of posters, etc. However, there is no book I've ever seen that comes even close to this work. Fantastic graphics, and utterly exhaustive. I stumbled across it while on a recent trip to Barcelona, and leapt at the chance. It's worth the price. (Spanish text, but due to the nature of the book - almost evclusively artwork - that's not really a problem for the non-hispanophone).

The Best of Its Kind!.......2000-07-01
If you're interested in posters from the period of the Spanish Civil War, this collection is second to none. Two thousand high-quality reproductions of posters dealing with every aspect of the war. Predictably, most are from the republican side, but that is to be expected if you are familiar with the war.
A must-have for afficionados of the period, and worth every cent!
