Like No Place Else.......2004-12-10

Robert Freeman Wexler takes his readers down paths that no one else ever thought about. Here we have a man running away to join the circus -- a simple enough story, one with which we're all familiar. Of course, the circus exists in a fantastical dimension, but that is only to be expected. What makes this book so special is not that reality is bent, but the way in which Wexler bends it. Just as in his highly praised novella "In Springdale Town," Wexler once again shows us a world from a different angle, combing factors in ways unlike anyone else.

Fun, enjoyable shojo..........2005-04-01

This was an enjoyable, entertaining manga featuring Ai Maekawa and her journey to transform from a nerdy, plain "jimi" (Japanese slang for a plain, studious girl) to a cute, popular girl. Following a rather pained journey through middle school Ai studies for her high school entrance examinations with exuberance determined to change her life. After an extreme diet and beauty regiment she enters a high school where she doesn't know anyone hoping for a fresh start...but she keeps receiving anonymous notes from someone who claims to know her past. Will Ai be able to keep her secret without losing her head or her dignity? Find out!! This was a good, quick read and I could definitely identify with the character's desire to make her life better. New series from Izumi Kaneyoshi.

Very briefly, Capt. Eli Drummond is on Null to rescue Capt. Luce Marzano and her crew who have been stranded. They have discovered several Ahtran ships on Null and now a tunnel. The brave captain decides to explore it only to disappear. Meanwhile the crews above surface are fighting a desperate battle for survival. Where are the ahtran? Kay Kenyon has woven a complex plot on an alien world. The portrayal of this world is brilliant, but unfortunately this is the best part of the book as Kenyon takes us through each and every ridge of Null and each and every thought in Ahtran life. For a race that has been in existence for thousands of years, the Ahtrans are surprisingly primitive, feeding on fungi and delighting in wagering. The story simply
seems to stretch forever and ever. The novel could be condensed by atleast a hundred pages and it would still be good. The novel
is also annoyingly feminist.

Alien Political Intrigue and Culture Clash.......2002-12-10

A totally satisfying read -- Kenyon creates a complex alien culture, very much like a caste society, and their uneasy truce with humankind. The clash of cultures between human and ahtra is well drawn by the author. Having fought each other from space ships, both human and ahtra have much to learn from close contact.

The politics of the ahtra society are presented in an intriguing manner and are central to the plot. There is a lot going on and by the end it all ties together very well. The characters are sympathetic and Kenyon writes in a very concise style, conveying a lot of action, description or meaning in a short paragraph or two.

This is the 2nd work of Kenyon's that I've had the pleasure to read ("Maximun Ice" being the first) and I look forward to my next.

I do mostly applique quilts. This book has the best set of amazingly realistic flowers and other items from nature that I've seen. It's easy to incorporate items into a design of your own. I think they work because of the easy blending of applique and embroidery techniques.. whatever works.

This is far and away the best volume of information and instruction on the art of applique I have ever studied. This book, unlike others on the art of applique, makes allowances for the readers own personality in fabric selection, technique, and motif placement. The instruction is clear and succinct, the photographs are excellent, and the patterns are flawless. I would not hesitate recommending this book to the beginner and the advanced fabric artist alike. A Real Disappointment.......2002-10-24

I had high hopes for this book as a resource in redesigning the bathroom in my newly-acquired house. Alas, for anyone who's had anything to do with bathroom remodelling, this book is way more cute than it is substantive.

It's got cute little split pages so you can play bathroom dress-up and determine your style. They're fun, but they don't give you much of an idea of anything, really. More of a kid's game than a design aide.

It's also got cute little press-out baths and sinks and loos that you can stick on squared paper so you can allegedly develop alternative layouts. The problem is, the cute little press-outs are far from comprehensive, and lack images of smaller-than-average tubs, or petite toilets or corner sinks. The text mentions items like soaking tubs and specialty sinks that aren't included in the stick-on figures

This book only shows enormous homes with tons of space. I'm a city dweller and can't see how this book can accommodate a (average to small) sized city bungalow, townhouse or condominium. Most of the homes displayed are these huge newer homes. If you're tight on space and want to re-do your bathroom, this book will just confuse you with unrealistic ideas.

I like many of the books in the Ideas for Great series. However, I was disappointed with this one. The photos are only so-so. They are not very inspiring, and the bathrooms are limited in style choices. The tips also left something to be desired. They were not very substantive or informative. I would skip this book. If you want a bathroom book with great photos, take a look at House Beautiful Bathrooms.

If you are looking for ideas and inspiration, this book will be helpful because it is mainly composed of beautiful photos of all types of bathrooms and situations. It does contain brief sections which cover layout basics, design ideas and remodeling realities but the bulk of the book are photos to help inspire and give design ideas. A "shopper's guide" in the back of the book covers countertops, cabinets, wall coverings, flooring, windows and skylights and light fixtures. If you are looking for more technical information and instruction, you might want to take a look at "Bathrooms: Design, Remodel, Build" published by Creative Homeowner.

An enlightened perspective on daily life.......2002-07-25

This book simply defies being categorized. The Serpent's Dance, Book 1 (of a trilogy) seems to be three things at once. First, it is a fictionalized account of the author's experience that portrays a transformational shift from being the victim of circumstances to intentionally creating his world. It integrates the author's experience with ancient wisdom, which results in "ah-ha" experiences for both author and reader.

Second, the book is very entertaining and rich with imagery. I found it difficult to put down. Yannam's vivid descriptions put readers in the middle of the action.

Third, The Serpent's Dance is almost an instructional book. At a minimum, Yannam implies that similar insights and mastery of self are open to practitioners of meditation.

Yannam's descriptions are so vivid it's like you are there. And such insights he has! When our hero gets the green light to move in with a new girlfriend and is given free reign to redecorate her house while she goes on vacation, instead of red flags, he sees an opportunity. Of course when she returns, the confrontation is inevitable. A serpent named Siddhah is Shri's confidant and mentor throughout the book. In conversations with Siddhah, Shri discovers how problems can be opportunities for learning. The serpent illustrates how events actually played out perfectly to reveal the actors' inner needs and unspoken intentions.

Historically, the symbol of the serpent emphasizes knowledge or inner wisdom, with an initially frightening aspect. The serpent is at once both revered and reviled. It exemplifies wisdom and secret knowledge, similar to the wise old man.

In The Serpent's Dance, Book 1, the serpent at first represents the destruction of the author's physical world and his point of view about the "reality" he has experienced in relationships and a near-fatal accident that left his lower half paralyzed.

Shri (as protagonist) has a conversation with the serpent in which he discovers that destruction is necessary for creation to occur. Further he discovers how various problems in relationships and the accident actually served the purpose of manifesting his inner needs or unconscious motivations. In other words, there is perfection in how things turned out that lead to inner development.

Siddhah's secrets seem to echo many of the enlightened perspective of the world's treasured spiritual writings. They actually make sense when presented next to the episodes in the author's life.

I heartily recommend Serpent's Dance for its entertaining and readable style. As Shri fearlessly bares his soul, you just might also learn something about yourself.

It takes a lot of courage to do what Shri Yannam has done -- to take a deep, honest, fearless look at oneself. I longed to read Serpent's Dance before it was called 'Serpent's Dance' and before it was ready to go to print. And I longed to read it after it did! And I'll read it again and again -- because the wisdom inside this book is truly timeless, and it transcends any and all belief systems. This book will draw your attention to the 'dance' that's happening within you, within that relationship you have with your lover, and with your world at large.

Shri Yannam is truly a blessing to all of us. Here is someone who's so incredibly worldly and sagely -- both at the same time! This will become apparent to the reader right from the very first chapter of the book. I hope all of you enjoy it as much as I have.

...This book opens with a exciting, riveting dialog of the development of a North Texas weather phenomenom, a Tornado, its' touchdown and the resulting chaos, devastation and frightening circumstances. So what does a Tornado have to do with a "Serpent's Dance"? For that matter, what is a "Serpent's Dance"?

As you will see, Shri Yannam proceeds to skillfully and cleverly craft this attention-getting stormy opening into the introduction of the touchdown, destruction and change of perception that was brought into his own personal life. It is the true story of his courage, toughness, anger, tears, and then the eventual peace, or at least reconcillation, of coming to terms with human life in a new form, from a changed- perspective.

In most every book I have read I have become aware of the occurence that somewhere amongst the pages lies a few lines or paragraphs that "glue" the book together. That is, they very directly, sometimes profoundly, express, coincisely, what the message is that the author seeks communicate in through the entire book. Here, I believe that I have found such words on page 58.: "For now, suffice it to say that compassion by the self, for the self would have worked a lot better. But you see - if you had compassion, then you would have been heart-centered. Which you weren't. You don't know what it meant to be heart-centered, nor did you really want to know. You humans turn yourselves into overwhelmingly complex bundles of energies when you slip into your heads and out of your hearts. The head is always trying to figure things out as it tries to make sense of the infinity of variables that life seems to throw at you. The heart already knows all [that] there is to know. [The composer] Mozart once said, "All the music [that] I want to compose has already been written. Such an awareness can only come thru [sic] a heart- centered awareness, from a sense of being that permeates you through and through." And further: " If you had self-compassion, you would not have needed a crisis to awaken you. A warm, open heart allows for simple, powerful awareness to settle into your bones, without effort, without struggle, without friction, without pain, where no stick-and-carrot method can do the trick. A heart will take you places where no head can, [nor] no head will!

Summing it up, this entire book was apparently written by Shri Yannam from his heart and soul and it does profoundly have heart. It is his desire now to give this to the world.
