A mysterious foundling with unique red hair and strange god-given powers, Firethorn is condemned to life as a powerless servant--or so she believes, until one of King Thyrse's noblemen becomes her lover. But, as she accompanies Sire Galan to war, Firethorn discovers she may have traded one form of bondage for another. A soldier's mistress--even a high-born soldier's mistress--is despised as a "sheath," or camp follower. Also, Firethorn's nasty ex-overlord, Sire Pava, has joined the king's army, and she has made a new enemy in her lover's cousin and closest friend, the sadistic Sire Rodela. However, she and Galan share a fiery love that will surely overcome the opposition of both their personal enemies and their kingdom's enemies. Then Sire Galan makes a strange, heart-shattering wager that may not only ruin his honor, but get them both killed.

Bloody, insightful, emotionally wrenching, and beautifully written, Firethorn is the impressive first volume of an epic fantasy trilogy. It's also an astonishingly assured debut novel that foretells Sarah Micklem's place among authors like Marion Zimmer Bradley, Jacqueline Carey, Terry Goodkind, and Rosemary Sutcliff at the top rank of high fantasists. --Cynthia Ward

        Book Description

Firethorn, the first volume in an epic trilogy, is a stunning debut. Sarah Micklem has introduced an unforgettable heroine into the fantasy pantheon. Loving, reckless, and indomitable, Firethorn travels through an imaginary world as real as history and as marvelous as legend.

Firethorn flees a life of drudgery to live alone in the forest, relying on her knowledge of herb lore to survive. She returns transformed, indebted to the god who saved her life, and blessed -- or cursed -- with uncanny abilities and a nagging sense of destiny. After a few nights of dalliance with Sire Galan, a high-caste warrior on his way to join the king's army, Firethorn seizes the chance to go with him, only to find she has exchanged one form of servitude for another.

The army readies for war in the vast encampment of the Marchfield, where men prey on each other and women dare go nowhere alone. Among the lowborn harlots and the highborn dames of the camp, Firethorn learns to use her gifts as a healer, venturing into realms of dream and shadow.

Desire drew Firethorn and Sire Galan together, but love binds them -- a love that has no place in the arrangement between a warrior and his sheath. When Galan makes a wager with disastrous consequences, Firethorn uses her gifts to intervene in his fate and learns just how hard it can be to tell honor from dishonor, justice from vengeance.

Sarah Micklem has written an extraordinary tale -- at once magical and earthbound, beautiful and violent. She immerses readers in a remarkably imagined world where gods are meddlesome, the highborn uphold their privileges with casual brutality, and a woman's only recourse may be the strength she finds within.

2 out of 5 stars Any charm in this tale is lost in its "realism", covered in mud and blood........2007-07-10

"Realism" is often much-lauded in fantasy works; there are few of us who do not tire of demi-god heroes who never fail to ride to victory under a spotless crimson and gold banner. It's also true that darkness in a work serves to highlight some drop of contrasting brightness, and that some of the best fantasy stories exist against a grim backdrop. Unfortunately, Micklem has forgotten to add that spark of bright hope, heroism, or inner nobility that would redeem such a tale, leaving "Firethorn" a mess of mud, blood, and base emotions that neither entertains nor enlightens.

The world of Firethorn is an exaggeration of historical feudal societies. The nobility deem themselves descended from gods, and everyone else in the world are known as "mud people", who have no personal rights and whose lives do not even merit counting though they make up the majority of an army. The protagonist, like the whole of her eponymous tale, is a daughter of the mud, resigned to her place as a mere drudge and seeking nothing higher than to satisfy her lust of a nobleman.

What Micklem no doubt intends to be a portrayal of love is squandered amidst jealousy, brutality, and a world whose inhabitants universally regard a woman's body as naught but a "sheath" for a man's "sword." There is no tenderness, few kind words, and yet the reader is expected to interpret mutual lust and violent possessiveness as what passes for "realistic" love. What few displays of true affection are hinted at come far too late in the novel to be of any consequence to either the story or the reader's interest.

The backdrop of the narrative is an impending war that the kingdom's distant liege has chosen to undertake for rumors of witchcraft in a neighboring kingdom, but the only battles we witness are between his myriad subjects, who can think to settle their differences in no other way. His army tears itself apart, with his approval, before even laying eyes on a battlefield, and this great war, which is frequently mentioned but never realized, seems to be nothing more than a convenient excuse for the author to gather together hoards of men with very few women.

All in all, this is a tale of a woman born of the mud and content to die in it so long as can experience her fill of brutal, bloody intercourse before her demise. She lives in a world that does not value her, sleeps with a man who retains her presence only because his phallus commands it, and watches as everyone around her rips themselves apart in meaningless combat. But what is unforgivable is how little the protagonist grows or learns in the process. Any character development is limited to a growing itch between her legs, and so this story ultimately amounts to nothing. This is a bland, dismal tale of a society that habitually rolls in mud, spills blood, and gains nothing from it.

Can such a grim and gritty tale be redeemed under the banner of "realism"? The answer is no, at least in this reader's opinion. Just as a light-hearted fantasy where shining knights rescue damsels in distress, where the righteous are spared and the wicked punished, lacks "realism", so does its opposite, a tale where there is no good or hope or light, and humanity is reduced to its basest instincts without any sign of redemption. A story with "realism" seeks to represent both sides, neither sugar-coating the bad nor denigrating the good. And without this oft-mentioned "realism" to recommend it, this novel is worthless to any but those who desire to revel in bleakness.

        5 out of 5 stars Firethorn.......2007-04-30

I found this book a refreshing take on the heroine/hero of fantasy movels. A mixture of medieval, oriental, otherworldly flavours. Other reviewers have said it is full of sex, sex, sex. They weren't reading this book. As a sheath, Firethorn has sex at her masters whim, and certainly appears to enjoy it, but the sex scenes described are low key, and I have read more descriptive ones in a Mills and Boon novel. I found the novel a little slow to start with, and some of the descriptions a bit flowery instead of getting on with it, but it was book I found hard to put down and easy to take up again. The leading characters were real people with real reactions to what life threw at them. It would make a good movie. Can't wait for the second instalment.

5 out of 5 stars Original and well-written; can't wait for the sequel!.......2006-07-27

I've read this book twice and am eagerly waiting for the sequel. Not only is this book well-written, the plot is original and I enjoy the author's gritty realism of what it might have been like to be the girlfriend/camp follower of a soldier on the campaign road. The main character is very intelligent with a lot of spunk. There are frequent sex scenes (and some rape scenes) but they are not the main focus of the book. Highly recommend!

I have read this book twice, and can't wait for the next one to come out. The plot is strong, steady, and twisty. Just the way I like it!!

        4 out of 5 stars wanting more.......2006-04-01

I read this book a while back, not long after it first came out.

It so completely engrossed me, that, when I first picked it up I couldn't put it down again.

The really liked the main character Firethorn ( originally named Luck ). I did not like her Blood master Lord Galan. Sure she chose to go with him, but he is essentially her master and from I could see there was no love there at all just sex, lust, jealosy and obssession.

This review is written a while after the last review on this book as I was looking to see if the next had come out yet ( no such luck ) and decided to look at other peoples reviews, then put my 2 cents worth in aswell.

In the first book Firethorn and the other servants are called Mudpeople; the Gods made them from mud. The High Born nobility are called Bloods; As they are said to have the blood of the Gods in thier viens.

I know what I want to happen to Firethorn, but what I want I believe has been done many times before. I want her to find out where she came from, who her people are and I want her to be VERY important to her people. I want her to be able to rub all those self rightious, arrogant, High born noble faces in her importance and see how they deal with one of thier Mudpeople! making desicions that affect them. Though she'd have to grow up a bit in maturity and politics before she could.

I'd also like to see her with someone who deserves her as Lord Galan certainly does not! And I don't care what Micklem gets him to do in future novels, he never will.

I'd also really like to see some more secondary character developement.

I really liked this first attempt. I loved the poetic descriptions, I loved the world ( though yes it is a brutal one as others have said ) and I really loved Firethorn herself.

I look forward to the next book.

No one can teach you the Mysteries; but in this book that is part anthropological exploration, part poetic evocation, Ramfis S. Firethorn points out some guideposts along the way. From the hunt to the dance, from ancient myths to modern misconceptions, exploring Manhood and Godhead, the author offers exercises that may help you identify the Gateway. Not for the faint-hearted nor prudish: this is a journey for those who want a spiritual challenge!

        5 out of 5 stars A Unique Resource.......2005-05-04

This is one of the very few books on men's mysteries that I can actually recommend to my friends and family. Firethorn has been immersed in the topic for over twenty years and has taken many young men and their older brothers into the depths of their souls. The exercises he presents in this book are excellent (if sometimes weird) and his insights are deep and meaningful. He presents the male soul out in the daylight, warts and all, and finds it valuable and worthy. This isn't just another fluffy "Iron John" spin-off, but a work of both intellect and heart that I found highly inspirational while writing my own book "The Pagan Man." Whether you are a teenaged male or a fully grown man (or a woman who loves one), this book will be a guiding voice while you're out there on that tightrope.

5 out of 5 stars The best male spirituality book I've ever read!.......2003-10-17

This book is it! I've read IRON JOHN, KING WARRIOR MAGICIAN LOVER and some of FIRE IN THE BELLY and while those were all good, this book is better! If you're interested in the Men's Movement, Men's Spirituality, Masculine Psychology or whatever you want to call it, this book is a must read! I found IRON JOHN too vague and I had this sense that I was supposed to be wild or something, but didn't know how. KING WARRIOR MAGICIAN LOVER provided me with a map of the soul that a mature man is supposed to have, but didn't tell me how to bring about maturity in my own soul.

BLIND FOLD ON A TIGHTROPE is full of excercises and with every word, Firethorn encourages you to go off into Male Mystery while at the same time barraging you with profound questions to mull over before you go out. And, Firethorn has been doing this for the past 15 years! He's out there initiating boys into manhood and leading male rituals. The other thing I like about it is that he's not TELLING you what to believe. He's just giving you suggestions. It's ultimately up to you to find out for yourself what it means to be a man to you. This is bar none the most helpful book I've ever read about male spirituality! I highly recommend doing all of the excercises, too, no matter how weird they get. They really helped me grow.

        5 out of 5 stars A definite must read.......2003-09-07

Like a latter-day Palm Springs, Vermillion Sands is a fully automated desert resort designed to fulfill the most exotic whims of the idle rich. But now it languishes in uneasy decay, populated only by forgotten movie stars, solitary impresarios and artistic and literary failures, a place where love and lust pall before the stronger pull of evil.

            5 out of 5 stars Hyper-realism into surrealism.......2006-09-05

This collection of short stories has a unifying theme of happening in a very strange desert resort, Vermillion Sands. I read this book maybe twenty years ago, and many of the images have followed through my life since. Enjoyable, going from the level of soap-opera guilty pleasure to the sublime and thought provoking. Ballard is the sober man's Bukowski, laying bare the emotions of the tragedies of everyday life and also putting the extraordinary in the context of normal human experience. My favorite book of his, and one of my favorites overall. "Crash" is my next favorite, so if you like this check it out next...

            5 out of 5 stars Magnificent stories.......2002-11-26

The beachfront, decadent community of Vermilion Sands is the setting for each of the nine wonderful stories in this collection. Vermilion Sands is where the rich are. They vacation, they play, they search for lost loves, and above all, they are horribly narcissistic.

Vermilion Sands is home to the magnificent singing sonic sculptures, tall statues that emit music or atonal sounds when they sense movement. The marvelous sand yachts of the rich, their trained sand rays (giant white manta rays that float through the air), the cloud-sculptors, the living clothes, and the psychotropic houses all live on in the mind long after the stories have been read. Vermilion Sands is a striking setting, one of the more memorable in fiction.

The themes of the stories are fairly similar. Most dwell on unattainable or forsaken love. In "Say Goodbye to the Wind", a former model pines for her departed love. In "Studio 5, the Stars" an aspiring poetess dreams of tragic love. And so it goes in each story. But the stories are fresh and have enough energy to overcome a repetitive theme.

Ballard's futuristic city stands as a monument to the power of a memorable fictional setting. Indeed, Vermilion Sands is as powerful as Jeffrey Thomas's Punktown or Jeff VanderMeer's Ambergris to use two recent examples. I'm hoping that Mr. Ballad has seen fit to write more Vermilion Sands stories in the 30+ years since this collection was published. I can only hope that I find more.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, brilliant, and inspired fantasy of the future.......2002-07-17

This magnificent collection of stories was first published in 1971. Although this book frequently shows up on lists of the greatest books of all time in that genre, it is not science fiction so much as a vision of possible forms that the arts could take in the future. It is more futuristic fantasy than science fiction. This volume marked J. G. Ballard's maturation as an author. Before this work, much of his work had been highly inventive but more mainstream science fiction. More specifically, he specialized in novels along the theme "this is the way the world ends." For instance, THE DROWNED WORLD concerns the fate of individuals living in tropical London after the polar ice caps have melted, leaving much of the world underwater. In THE WIND FROM NOWHERE a never-ceasing wind destroys the planet by blowing away all the soil and making agriculture and most other forms of human endeavor impossible.

What makes VERMILLION SANDS is the sheer inventiveness of the world he imagines. It is a cheap, tacky world, not unlike a tawdry Las Vegas or Palm Springs, populated by futuristic artists and cultural has-beens. The art forms that Ballard imagines are brilliant, and feel far more familiar thirty years later than they must have felt to those in the early 1970s. After all, computers and the Internet and digitalization has constantly forced us to rethink the possibilities and forms of art. Ballard describes architecture that responds to the emotional experiences of its inhabitants and imparts some of that feeling back to those entering it. He imagines machines rather than people producing poetry, on long ticker tape like rolls of paper. Plants that sing. Sculptors who work with clouds as their preferred medium. And Ballard manages to meld these strange new arts perfectly into the lives of a rich and fascinating, if also rather sad and tragic, group of characters.

This book is, at the time that I am writing this, out of print. But it has over the years come back in print on a few occasions. I am certain that it will again. It is without question a much more interesting book than many of his that are currently in print, and if there is any justice it will once again be made available. Until then, it is well worth searching out.

4 out of 5 stars Take a Mental Vacation to Vermilion Sands.......2001-07-23

My personal favorite collection of stories from Ballard, and many people I've spoken to also hold a fondness for this group of stories. Although many of the story concepts repeat the theme of the tragic female figure and the tortured man who loves her and gets caught in the dramatic conflict, it is a lush and expansive vision that weaves through the collection. The title refers to a fictional beach resort, a playground of burnt out executives and movie stars at play, or in retreat from the rest of the world. As with most Ballard fiction, you get the distinct impression that these stories are actually taking place somewhere, and perhaps Ballard has just changed the names to protect the decadent. The vivid details of living clothing, cloud sculptors and singing sculptures are so intense, it's a bit of a surprise that Hollywood hasn't adapted some of these stories to the currently CGI movie craze. Then again, like most of what Ballard writes about, that could be coming just around the corner...

5 out of 5 stars Remembrance of things to come.......1999-02-09

This collection of elegant, minatory stories about the has-been resort community of Vermilion Sands and the human flotsam that washes up on its derelict shores comprises some of author J.G. Ballard's most accessible work. His imaginative gifts and jade cool prose are everywhere on display in these stories. Sailplane artists sculpt the clouds into likenesses of their patrons. Psychosensitive houses are driven insane by their owners and bio-fabrics shimmer and pulse to their wearers moods. Ballard likes to create strange, surreal outerscapes and unite these with the straitened innerscapes of his protagonists, then narrate what happens next. In Vermilion Sands he exceeds wonderfully

The history of tea is a long and fascinating one. Imbibing this refreshing drink, cultivated in more than 40 countries, has been a popular way to relax for thousands of years; in fact, there are many more tea drinkers than coffee drinkers in the world. There are a huge number of varieties of tea, but almost more important than the tea itself are the many social rituals associated with it. Tomislav Podreka, a tea expert, elucidates the history and characteristics of teas around the world in this truly lovely little book. In addition, Podreka explains how to prepare and steep green teas, black teas, white teas, pouchong teas, and oolong teas; tells how to properly serve tea; and offers a series of delightful teatime recipes that may properly accompany any fine cuppa. Beware: this may well turn the reader into a tea aficionado, for whom no mass-produced teabag will ever be good enough again.

                            Book Description

The pleasures and benefits of tea have been known and enjoyed for close to five thousand years -- after water, it is the most consumed beverage in the world. Yet only in recent years has tea come into its own in the United States; since 1990, tea consumption has doubled.

In Serendipitea, Tomislav Podreka, a tea specialist, explores the history and philosophy of tea and shares little-known anecdotes and myths. He takes us on a fascinating journey through the many tea-producing countries, looking at all the various types of tea, their origins and lore, and the distinctive taste, aroma, and leaf of each region. Serendipitea focuses on tea rituals from around the world, and looks at how the ceremony of taking tea is integral to so many cultures -- from the revered Japanese "Cha-no-yu" to the classic British "cuppa." Also included are a few recipes of chosen food offerings from each of the countries covered.

The author discusses the important difference in quality between bagged varieties and premium loose leaf teas, advising on the best steeping techniques. He also includes chapters evaluating the latest health benefits associated with tea, as well as herbal infusions and tisanes.

                                Book Description

Aptly called "painting with scissors," decou-page is the art of decorating a surface with cut-out paper images, as beautifully documented in this overflowing archive of popular decoupage subjects. The book opens with a brief history of the craft and provides concise instructions for cutting out motifs, coloring black-and-white prints, preparing surfaces, gluing, varnishing, and sanding. Then a dazzling collection of more than a thousand prints provides animals, bows and ribbons, cherubs and cupids, flowers, fruits, and vegetables, shells and marine life, sporting images, and numerous borders and background patterns. The color pages are printed on one side so that all of the images can be used; because they can be photocopied easily, the black-and-white pages are printed on both sides.

Originally I bought this book for scrapbooking ý great images. Then I realized why not personal greeting cards for birthdays and holidays?! And when a friend wanted a theme for a party, I used the images from the book for invitations, placemats, centerpieces, coasters etc. And Iýve only just begun.

I'm disappointed in this book. They are mainly country styles and outdated. Even the so-called soft contemporary and scandinavian belong to another era. If you are looking for creative styles or sleek modern for city living , forget it.

5 out of 5 stars easy lessons on six types of design.......1999-07-11

The book takes Classic, Country Cottge, Romantic, Soft Contemporary, Scandinavian, and Dramatic and other designs and explains their main style pointers. It illustrates each type of design with beautiful photos. It gives these lesson and photo examples first in the livingroom, then bedrooms and halls and bathrooms. Well done.

This edition brings new scholarship and insight to a highly sought after and long out-of-print book. Originally published in 1683, Moxon's Mechanick Exercises was the first book ever written on printing and printing types. This important book has been reprinted several times, remaining one of the most influential books in the field. Now, in this fine edition the text has been extensively annotated, updated and expanded for today's scholars and artists in the fields of the printing, lettering and graphic arts.
