Interesting but Uneven.......2005-04-03
There are some wonderful stories collected here, many of which are classics ("The Snows of Kilamanjaro," "The Things They Carried"). But what's disappointing is that the editor obviously selected many stories simply because of the stature of the author and not the story's merit. The most obvious example is the Fitzgerald story written just before his death, which is slight and cliched. And the choice of THREE stories by David Foster Wallace is just baffling.
best anthology out there.......2002-06-04
This is probably pound for pound the best literary anthology I've come across. A great mix of old (Hemingway, Flannery O'Connor, Nabokov) and new (Means, Foster Wallace). I wish I had this book in my undergraduate days--would've been great to have these stories all consolidated in one package as they are here. It also has the best cover I've ever seen for an anthology.

So much better than the Best American Stories of the Century. I took this book on vacation with me, and found it to be one of the greatest collections I've ever read.

Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Wallace, Steinbeck, Nabokov...The list goes on and on. What more can you ask for? I spent the weekend with the book, and there are no duds here. Only some of the finest fiction from the 20th Century. It's also printed on high quality, thick paper, unlike so many other anthologies which are printed on paper so thin you can see through it.
It's also a beautiful book to have sitting on your coffee table.

This novel is an incredible work of storytelling. The reader will quickly find him/herself laughing at the utter insanity of this story's events. The best part about this is that you'll never want to put it down. However, while the narrator/main character can be easily likable for some, he can be just as easily loathesome for others. Either way, everyone will get a good laugh. While some may find Manhattan Loverboy to be simply entertaining though, I find it to be a little bit more. The conflict of this tale is both hilarious as well as mysterious; it is left up to the reader to choose which or welcome both. Arthur Nersesian is definitely an excellent writer who picks at the foibles of us all; pick this one up and enjoy a good read.

A Wild Ride!.......2004-04-28
From start to finish this book is a wild ride. Arthur Nersesian breaks all the rules and comes out a winner. His characters in Manhattan Loverboy are far from perfect, almost warped even, yet the reader is so intrigued it's nearly impossible to put the book down. By the end of this book, I couldn't believe the twists it had taken!
I'd recommend Nersesian's books to anyone who is looking for something a little different and a lot of great reading.
Deep light Reading.......2002-10-27
Neresian has the talent to create tales which are easy to swallow in a few sittings but are surprisingly loaded with character depth and strange twists and turns. This novel, like his previous works, does the same: by taking an under achiever-below avegerage character and putting them into extraordinary circumstances. It's very hard to even explore these stories without giving away some of the plot devices which make them so addictive.

The book was a compelling story about a selfish, paranoid egotistical pig of a man. The book is completely crazy and has warped my mind forever. I didn't think it could get any better until the end when Joey was tricked by his so-called buddy for the last and final time. It was incredible, well writen, and the best book I have ever read. Arthur Nersesian has permanently found himself a space in my heart and many others.

By the time this "Choose Your Own Adventure" novel came out, the series was largely out of the hands of its inspired founder Edward Packard and in the hands of various hacks. "Terror Island" contains exciting enough yarns, but ridiculous ones, all about some kind of Hitler type who has taken over an island to experiment with mind control (by strapping helmets on tigers, for one thing), dabble in Dinosaur resurrection, and strike terror into the hearts of governments who send spies to stop it, among them you and also a stereotypical Soviet. Amusing enough, but not one you would care to reread.

This is the first cookbook that I have sat down and read cover-to-cover. The authors have a great sense of humor as well as excellent taste in food! The recipes are easy to follow, delicious, and sensuously sinful!

I don't know about you, but I am so sick of going to restaurants and having my dinner companions say things like: "sauce on the side, please" or "can this be made vegetarian?" or "no oil, no butter" or "I know it's not on the menu, but would you mind just plopping down a dry old chicken breast on half a lettuce leaf?" It's embarassing. I eat at least a stick of butter a day, not to mention all the foie gras, creme brulee, lamb and creamy sauces I pile in, and I'M THIN! And I have LOW BLOOD PRESSURE! Because of EXERCISE! So if you are like me, this book is for you. The authors have a ribald sense of humor, and in spite of the typeface this is a fun book to read. Surprisingly, the recipies are really, really good. Quails with Morels, Penne with Salmon, and the Roast Duck with Black Currant Sauce are all trust-worthy concoctions. The coq-au-vin, seemingly condensed from Julia Child's three-pager works well too. So, if you sit around a lot, watch TV, or just don't move much, don't use this book. You'll probably die.

Tired of being bullied by the passive-aggressive sniffs and lifted eyebrows of the low-fat crowd? Arm yourself with this book! Don't be intimidated by those sanctimonious health-mongers! This is a great wedding theme book. I'm having a fall wedding and wanted to take advantage of the beauty of an upstate NY autumn so we're having lots of reds, oranges, and golds. This book helped me narrow down my focus and choose a centerpiece design, gave me ideas for the invitations to the rehersal dinner, and too many more to mention. Lots of great photos! I highly recommend if you are looking for a theme wedding based on season.

Make Sense of Revelation.......2007-07-17
There is much study material written on the Revelation . . . but Peter Hiett writes a very readable book that uncovers the meaning of John's words, while retaining the majesty and mystery. I'm not a big fan of the highly-fictionalized "Left Behind" series, but if you are, I would bet "Eternity Now!" would be a great counterpoint, revealing some questionable assumptions and presenting an alternative interpretation that, for me, better squares with the totality of Scripture.
Don't miss the fact that Hiett gets a commendation from author Philip Yancey.

I started this book as a secondary source for teaching on revelation. Quickly it became the book that I would turn to find the "heart of God" in Revelation. It is a pastoral commentary that would greatly encourage ANY Christian.
