Book Description

Faith Fox is a sparkling novel of comedy and conversation, birth and death, and the differences between England’s well-born and plain people from a two-time winner of the Whitbread Prize and Booker Prize finalist. This comedy of manners set in early ’90s Britain centers around newborn Faith Fox, the daughter of the sweet, healthy, and hearty pearl of her Surrey village, Holly Fox, who inexplicably dies in childbirth. Faith’s beanpole father can’t and won’t look after her. Holly’s mother—a matron from Surrey’s gin-and-tonic belt who is ostensibly full of good nature, good sense, and sociability—refuses to acknowledge the baby whose birth killed the daughter she loved. And so an extraordinary group of family, friends, and strangers converge to make sure that Faith Fox ends up raised well in the right hands. The concerned parties include an ascetic priest of an uncle in Northern England who runs a commune with his unfaithful ex-hippie wife and her precocious, lonely son; the Tibetan refugees staying there; and the splendidly bickering and ancient paternal grandparents. As Faith’s future unravels amidst the shifting scenes of high society and low, the old and the young, Jane Gardam explores the English heart in all its eccentric variety.

3 out of 5 stars Probably 3 1/2 stars.......2005-04-10

The book was very cute, funny, and amusing. It gets 3 1/2 stars for amusement value, losing points for construction of plot.

This was a light read about the family of an infant whose mother dies in childbirth. The maternal grandmother, Thomasina, deals with her grief by running off to Egypt with a handsome general, while the father, who doesn't want to raise the child, dumps her on his spacey-but-charismatic brother who runs a monastery with his mysterious and unlikeable wife. Both barely look at the baby, which makes sense because they barely notice the child they already have. Meanwhile, the baby is being cared for by an older Tibetan woman who is staying at the monastery because everyone else is so engrossed in his or her own personal issues that nobody but the step-brother really notices the baby. ...Except for the paternal grandparents, who would notice baby Faith if they could. However, through a comedy of errors and poor planning, they are prevented from seeing her because it somehow is inconvenient for anyone involved to either bring them to the monastery, or bring the baby down to meet them.

It's difficult to know where the plot is going because of all the side-journeys into the various characters. This is not to say that the characters aren't amusing, or that the story isn't entertaining. I just felt as though I was being led on a journey that didn't lead anywhere. The final resolution of the plot came at the very end of the book, and was very abrupt. It wasn't until that moment that I realized what the main two threads of the story were (there were so many, how was I to pick the main ones?), but this brought attention to the fact that the bulk of the novel was comprised of loose ends, most of which the author never attempts to resolve except through a few vague references to where some characters end up, or who they end up with. Little attention is paid to "why" except in indirect observations by other minor characters. Mostly the characters are just left where they landed without any further comment.

One character after another is introduced, and the focus of the story keeps shifting. Most of the characters are minor ones but are all given the same attention and weight as the major ones to the extent that you aren't really sure whose viewpoint you should be following in order to get a grasp on the plot (Hint: Thomasina and the paternal grandparents, even though Thomasina's viewpoint is only rarely offered by comparison to other characters. To a lesser degree, Jocasta.)

All in all, it was a good book - NOT a "great" book. I enjoyed it, but probably won't ever read it again.

5 out of 5 stars Dark comedy of familial love.......2004-02-03

Faith Fox is three months old at the end of this dark and witty comedy, which opens with her birth and the shocking, unexpected death of her bursting-with-health mother, Holly. Two-time Whitbread winner Gardam ("The Hollow Land" "The Queen of the Tambourine") turns her unsparing eye on the manner in which Holly's circle deals with her death.

Her busy husband, Andrew, turns Faith over to his ascetic, religious brother, Jack, and resurrects an affair with Jocasta, his brother's wife. Thomasina, Holly's shattered mother, shocks everyone by running off to Egypt with a retired general, never having set eyes on her grandchild. Thomasina's friend, Pammie, indulges her virtuous side at every convenient opportunity.

Faith is barely visible, handed off from Pammie's hired nurse to a Tibetan refugee on Jack's combination sheep farm and haven for the "underprivileged." No one ever has the time to take her to her paternal grandparents, who are too old and sick to make the trip themselves.

The anxious grandparents, and Jocasta's son, Philip, a brilliant, dyslexic boy who keeps Faith in the forefront of his mind, are the novel's most appealing characters. Acerbic and funny, but without the venal self-absorption of the rest of the gang, these three help work the story to a satisfying conclusion, as Gardam adroitly allows all of her characters at least a modicum of self-knowledge. This is a love story - in the most complex sense of the word.

In the land of Brynhyvar, the High Queen Meeve is slowly dying from what she thinks is the same illness that took her mother. In reality she is slowly being poisoned by one of her inner circle and the Loquileans whose ambassador is on a state visit and whose mercenaries are spread around the countryside. The land knows something is wrong and it is not faring well. Blight is spreading across the land, goblins are on the rampage and Meeve's children answer her summons out of duty not love.

The realm of Faerie is affected by events in the mortal world. The goblins kill much of the court including the king and queen, silver fromm the mortal world is making its way into faerie poisoning the land and the magic isn't grounded. Timias, who was sent to the human realm to learn druid magic in hopes of finding some way of learning to control the magic want to keep the borders between faerie and Shadow (the human world). Timias is an unnatural creature who can become Faerie, goblin and human depending on what realm he is in. Because of his desire to make Faerie safe for the Sidhe he becomes the catalyst to changes the way the mortal world is ordered.

SILVER'S LURE is a very pleasant fantasy that focuses mainly on Meeve's children, all of whom are on a quest of some kind. In their own heroic way they are at the mercy of their feelings of duty and obligation to the land and to their mother. Readers may have a little trouble following all the subplots because they are linear and not sequential while the romantic sub-plot takes a back seat to the action oriented storyline.

3 out of 5 stars Physical Fitness and Krav Maga.......2002-12-29

This 1983 volume is composed of two parts: a physical fitness section (includes standards of the Israeli self defense forces at the time of publication), and self defense (Krav Maga). This was the first volume in English on Krav Maga (self defense), translated by Miriam Schlessinger. Long before Krav Maga became a trendy (and costly) "martial art", it was a practical no-nonsense method of defense which could be utilized by anyone, anywhere. While awareness of Krav Maga has improved, it appears this method of self defense has only recently begun, among some practitioners, to accumulate the same "cultural baggage" which has helped drag down other "traditional" arts which once had practical value--thankfully, I don't think Krav Maga's sensible & short philosophy will allow serious practitioners to become so bogged down in historical and cultural studies that they will be able to neglect practicality.

This volume in its stark simplicity is an interesting contrast to more recently published works on this topic. Author Colonel David Ben-Asher credits First Sgt. Major Emi Lichtenfeld (Imi Sde-or) and Lt Col. Shaike Barak for the Krav maga section of the book. The techniques shown are plain and simple self-defense, the same methods shown in other basic volumes. For a more thorough assessment, see Imi Sde-or and Eyal Yanilov's more recent "Krav Maga".

      Book Description

Although Christianity is still a major religious force, there are growing numbers of people in other faiths, including the various Pagan traditions. Some Christians have responded to this trend with fear and derision, while some Pagans have reacted to that fear with anger and mistrust.

Much of the problem is due to misunderstandings and lack of communication. This can change with Gus diZerega's Pagans & Christians. Here you will find a penetrating and illuminating comparison, showing that neither path has the single correct approach to the Divine. Rather, either or both can be authentic and legitimate expressions of the appreciation of the Ultimate Source of All.

Pagans & Christians is an ideal way to help bridge what at time seems a wide chasm between Christian and Pagan beliefs. By sharing core ideas of both paths, this book provides a way to give deeper mutual understanding and unity among the religions of the world.

Although Pagans & Christians accepts both paths as valid, the book provides a more in-depth explanation of Paganism ó the minority religion because in some ways, Paganism demands a greater defense and explanation of its beliefs and ideas to dispel misunderstandings. The author is a Third Degree Gardenerian Elder and in Pagans & Christians has presented nothing less than a brilliant defense of Paganism, clearly showing how it should stand beside all of the major religions of the world as an equal. As part of this defense, diZerega gives a listing of biblical contradictions and Christian philosophical difficulties which can help any Pagan responding to a negative attack, and will help any Christian to view his or her religion as a way, not the way.

Granted, Dr. DiZerega does an excellent job at reconciling the differences of opinion between Christian and Neo-Pagan religious thought. However, the true value of this book for the Neo-Pagan himself is in the clear presentation of heretofore unspoken concepts within Wiccan theology. While most pop-culture books on the subjects of Wicca and Neo-Paganism lean heavily toward practice and "how-to", DiZerega's work is unique for explaining the religious "why."

In this book can be found explainations of Neo-Pagan concepts of Theodicy (sin, evil and suffering), Christology (views on the nature of Jesus and other historical/mythical persons), and even Eschatology (Earth's/Mankind's destiny and the "end of all things"). Presented in a well written and easy to understand format, Dr. DiZerega's book is certain to become a classic in the education of current and future Neo-Pagan theologians.

3 out of 5 stars The Good and The Bad.......2006-05-16

Actually, as much as I hate to admit it, "A Reader" (who gave the book 1 star) is somewhat correct in his/her analysis of this book.

I am Pagan and I practice vocational Witchcraft,* however my best friend is in his fourth year of seminary studying to become a Christian Priest. He is very open-minded and spiritually secure, and it was he who bought me this book for my birthday. I'm sure he meant well, but I was not impressed by what I read.

There is indeed a lot of thinly veiled Christianity-bashing in this book. The amount of Bible passages that are quoted, for the sole purpose of "debunking" them, is embarrassing. At times I felt like I was reading a book created for angry ex-Christians who switched to paganism and were seeking to `justify' their new spirituality. What a sorry foundation to build your faith on; by trashing the one that didn't work for you.

However, other parts of the book were more balanced and reasonable. The writing style had an overall flow and ease of reading that I enjoyed. Mr. diZerega has an ability to keep his readers interested in what he is saying, so that the point is not lost in tedium.

      * "Witchcraft" is a word that means, "craft of the wise" and has been around for thousands of years, in one dialect or another, the world over. It does not always translate to the spiritual realm, or of associating "magical powers" as A Reader suggests. I find it sad that a person who has so many misconceptions about a faith musters the ability to be outraged when another person makes similar misconceptions about his/her own.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting Starting Point.......2006-03-05

My problem is likely that I expected more from this book. A PhD writing about conflict and commonality of Pagans and Christians could have been much better, as it's not a field of scholarship well-delved into at this time. However, Dr. diZerega's PhD is in political science, not religion and philosophy, and his arguments are not terribly well-formed. I found his outlook on both Christianity and Paganism to be narrow at worst, naive at best.

If you wish to read this, do so with a critical eye.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting comparison of Christianity and Wicca.......2005-04-10

There are rather few books on Paganism that make any effort to contrast it with Christianity. This is one of them. And yes, it tries to find some common ground between Pagans and Christians. It also looks at differences between them.

diZerega begins by stating that while Pagans are quite varied in their approaches to religion, there are five characteristics that are typically associated with Paganism, namely Pantheism (or Panentheism), Animism, Polytheism, cyclical as opposed to linear reality, and the lack of an Ultimate Evil.

That's an interesting claim. It may well be true.

Unlike the author, I'm not too interested in whether there is an underlying unity to divinity. I think we've seen far too much of that way of "thinking" from the "monotheists." If by unity, we mean reality and perfection, that's fine. But the whole point of Polytheism, to my way of thinking, is that the Goddesses and Gods are perfections of attributes. That is the most they can be. The Christian god is far less than that, in my opinion, because by being defined to be bad at nothing, it can not be good at anything either.

diZerega does not mention the difference between a "first cause" monotheist god and the very different Polytheist Gods and Goddesses. Once again, by making their god the first cause, I think the monotheists rendered it far less than any real Goddess or God. A first cause needs to be infinitely weak, otherwise something even weaker would have had to create it.

The author mentions that some Jews and Muslims think Christianity is basically Polytheistic. That's because the Trinity seems like three deities. One could also argue that the Saints are actually an entire Pantheon. I don't buy either of these arguments. Instead, I dismiss Judaism, Islam, and Christianity as atheism. My flippant reason is that their adherents believe in so few gods that they are basically no different than atheists, but I think you can see my real reasoning in the preceding paragraphs.

Now, what about idol worship? Here, the author makes the excellent point that Pagans do not think that idols are actual deities. Instead, many of us focus on the idols and on ourselves. Actually many Christians do the same with statues of their heroes.

I think the distinction between cyclic and linear views of reality is valid. Authors such as Walter Kaufmann have stated that Judaism in particular emphasizes the uniqueness of reality. There is one universe, it was created, and it moves linearly through time. Things happen once, and that is it. Most Pagans tend towards a very different view, one where the universe always exists, and recurring phenomena, including rebirth become significant.

diZerega now makes a major point with which I strongly agree. He says that three major aspects of Paganism that makes it different from Christianity are:

      1) Religious pluralism

      2) Harmony rather than salvation as the primary religious focus

      3) Greater respect for personal experience than faith or the experiences of others as a valid criterion for spiritual truth

I think he got that right! This may explain why many Pagans feel offended when authoritarian monotheists try to dictate how we ought to worship, or cite religious authorities as experts on spirituality, or preach intolerance of those who have "incorrect" religious views. He contrasts this with the intolerance of Christians for Christians of different sects, even before the Christians took over the Roman Empire. And he gives some evidence that this intolerance was what got the Christians in trouble with the relatively tolerant Romans.

The book has a brief but sincere description of Wicca. And then we get into Christian complaints about Wicca and Wiccan complaints about Christianity.

The Christian criticisms of Wicca fall into a three categories: Wicca does not address the problem of suffering and Evil, Wicca does not deal with the problem of malice, and Wicca not only denies the Bible but has no sacred scriptures to substitute for it. While I think these criticisms are probably invalid, I see no reason why Wicca needs to (or ought to) deal with suffering, malice, or evil, or have any sacred scriptures for that matter. diZerega spends a while attacking the Bible as inaccurate and self-inconsistent.

The Wiccan criticisms of Christianity start with Christianity's blindness to spirit and nature: Christians rarely sympathize with considering the material world sacred. The other criticism is, of course, Christianity's intolerance of multiple Deities.

I think this latter criticism is very serious. Humans are varied, live in all sorts of different locations, and are fickle. For all three reasons, we need a big Pantheon. Making Them into just one deity not only gets rid of Them all, it also gives tyrants an excuse to say that the only remaining deity rules the whole world and everyone in it, giving these tyrants an excuse to impose religious tyranny on their own people, their neighbors, and everyone else.

This is an interesting and thought-provoking book.

5 out of 5 stars Seasons in Simple Cross Stitch Patterns.......2007-05-16

Here's another great book I found at the library and couldn't live without. I love doing cross stitch, but my eyesite just doesn't allow me to do the really detailed patterns anymore. This book is exactly what I look for now days, simple with easy to read instructions. It has four seasons of alphabets, which are adorable and can be used in so many projects. A flower wreath for each month, hundreds of people, animals, places and things to stitch into decorations and gifts. Many can be finished within a few hours. A great book for beginners or advanced stitchers - it's just a lot of fun! Highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Jo Verso cross stitch book.......2002-03-13

Product was brand new as advertised. Lovely hardcover book. Lots of nice small motifs for little projects, as well as larger, more intricate ones. Lots of info and patterns in this book. It is, however, a British produced and oriented book. So there are lots of motifs that really only apply to British holidays, sports, etc. But, on the otherhand, it does offer the user a variety of unusal cross stitch patterns not ordinarily found in the States. It was shipped carefully and arrived very promptly. I would not hesitate to order through this company again, nor would I hesitate in purchasing any of Jo Verso's books.

4 out of 5 stars A feast for the eye.......2000-04-04

Designs for every month, every season and all (British and American) festive occasions - with clear instructions to adapt patterns for a personal note. All in Jo Verso's distinctive and much loved country style. However, Verso does use a lot of half or three-quarter cross-stitches and not everyone likes to make those; they need a good eye and a steady hand and are much harder to do on popular aida fabric than on linen. Then again, there are not many other books where you will find so many designs of people in different outfits (according to occupation and season) and everyday items such as garden tools - very useful for personalized samplers.

              2 out of 5 stars Not a pattern book.......2007-06-24

I am not sure that the author's intended the title and content of this book to be quite so different. There is nothing here that will help you choose the correct position for lighting in your new home. They do offer alternative lighting choices (e.g. fluorescent lights to replace incandescent for better energy efficiency) along with potential energy savings. If you want to know how to position recessed lights to best illuminate a room, then this is not the book for you. I was very disappointed. After the first 15 or so pages the book is very repetative. Beyond the beginning, the text looks like something that college professors threw together to pad their publication list.

                  Book Description

The Journey of Rainsnow, centuries in the making, yet destined for our own times, is an extraordinary book, at the same time personal and universal, private and planetary.

The Journey of Rainsnow is the story of one man’s mystical odyssey of self-discovery, as he leaves behind the fetters of his "rational" past, to map out a new territory of life within his heart. It is a story which moves from the hard, practical streets of New York City, to a New Age awakening, driven by paranormal experiences, powerful synchronicities, and a vivid stream of past-life memories, which give us glimpses of times and places as diverse as ancient Egypt and Greece, feudal Japan and imperial China, Maya and Aztec Mexico, Native North America, and Nazi Germany. As the adventure unfolds, so, too, do history’s most critical lessons, and the deepest mysteries of life.

The Journey of Rainsnow, destined to be a New Age classic, is truly a must read for anyone immersed in the search for life’s meaning; for anyone committed to the struggle of our world to heal and survive.

                  5 out of 5 stars A fantastic odyssey!.......2002-09-24

I've been interested in reincarnation for a while now and although I've read a few books about people's experiences, they tended to be fairly sketchy, giving only occasional glimpses into the past with a lot of loose ends and leaving plenty of unanswered questions. But this book blows away everything else I've read as J Rainsnow has put in so much detailed information about the many lives he has regressed himself back to.

The book describes how he first got into past life regression and then how he learned to use self-hypnosis to regress himself on a regular basis. Now while reading about a number of someone's past lives might not seem that interesting on the face of it, with each life he describes you really do get drawn into it - the struggles, the dreams, the loves, the successes, the failures and death of course - plus the post-death experiences which are really something. In fact some lives I thought I would not be interested in at all I found myself being very much touched by.

What really adds some of the best value is the wonderful insight that he brings to the purpose and meaning of these lives - plus the higher perspective he gives to life in general. Though the very best thing for me is to simply know that such deep inner exploration is indeed possible. Definitely the best book I've read in a long time.
