Heavy.......2006-11-21
I found the book heavy-going. Points are hammered home and I could not help wishing the book were much shorter. I do not think I as a reader would have lost much if there had been less detail.
Informative, but has some problems.......1998-05-30
A Feeling for Books is an interesting collection of thoughts on the history of the Book of the Month Club and on Radway's personal evolution as a reader and scholar. But... it needed editing. Must she document every circuitous and irrelevant observation that occurs to her? This is probably a fine practice in academic writing, but in the personal narrative portions of the book she was unfocused. The book suffers from a somewhat schizo-feeling due to Radway's dual purposes of historical account and personal observation, but she is well aware of this (the reader is warned at the outset). It is not that these two areas of focus don't complement each other in some ways and lead to a rather unorthodox narrative, but the format did lead me wonder if I should even apply questions of enjoyability to the book. Academic reading is not meant to be pleasurable (or so Radway says), and this book is certainly full of scholarly language, but Radway has such sympathy and fellow-feeling for the pleasure-reader that I think she was trying to elicit a pleasurable reading experience. How did the academic community receive this book? ...For me, the most interesting observations arose through the author's interactions with the BOMC editors circa late 1980s. Their enthusiastic readings and quirky classifications of books (self-referential, inwardly-focused fiction is deemed "autistic") are well worth reading about. One last observation: the book could have used appendices with complete lists of the BOMC main and alternate selections from founding to the present, and perhaps a list of all past judges/editors.
Brilliant and revealing, but neither tight no rigorous.......1998-03-15
An erudite yet bold and powerfully immediate report on the BOMC's origin and development over six decades, A Feeling for Books is also an intimate document, poignantly tracing the author's relationship to the Club from her adolescence to her maturity. Because Radway is a fine researcher, a skillful reader, and a seasoned introspective, each aspect of her project succeeds on its own terms. But juxtaposed or, more problematically, superimposed, the yields of her various ends, ideas, and methods are neither commensurable nor mutually supportive. Recurrent "lumping" and intermittent incoherencies threaten to defeat Radway's purposes, inviting at least partial scepticism about her hard-won evidence and beautifully teased-out arguments. The reader and the author would have been better served by a division of this work into two books, one a disciplined cultural inquiry into the essence of persistent, unresolved conflicts in the publishing industry, the other a memoir devoted to the discovery and synthesis of the author's own values in a world of flux.

Customer Reviews:
Great plot, poor characters........2005-06-24
I loved the overall plot of this book, but felt that the flimsy characters dragged the book down. I spent the entire story trying to figure out the "mystery" and that is what drove me to finish it. I was moderately rewarded at the end of the novel with the typical "there'll be a sequel" ending.
The characters are what killed this book. Brianna, the "damsel in distress" was rude, abrasive and spoiled to the point of being irrational. I didn't want to see her saved at all.
Tavis, the main character, irked me because he was doing everything he could to save a character who wasn't worth saving.
The verbal and emotional interaction between characters was forced and stilted at best. Dialogue was campy when the characters were discussing feelings and thoughts.
Overall, I won't be picking up the second of the series.

A Fantastic Leap!.......2006-12-31
This is one of the better Quantum Leap novels I've read! It does a great job of balancing life back at the Project with Sam and his leap. The characters are interesting, and it's nice to see some of Gooshie's backstory. He's a vital character in the show, yet you rarely see him, and you don't get to know much about him, so this was a wonderful way to give us a glimpse of his life. I enjoyed this book thoroughly!
Great.......1999-03-21
Okay, it was wonderful. Gooshie is a person often heard of but never explored. The unsung hero. And now we find out more about him. Plus, Ziggy goes on strike. It's hillarious seeing Al try to reason with her. Plus, for all those who haven't read it. . . let me clue you in to something. In the last chapter, notice the VW van. Don't ask , you'll understand when you read it. this is a great book by a great author.
Book Description
This extraordinary new understanding of the biblical parable of the loaves and fishes reveals within the original Greek text twelve practical methods for living a life of meaning and miracles.
In this uplifting work, R. Todd Michael meticulously retranslates the parable of the loaves and fishes, and makes an astonishing discovery: Below the surface-deep within the subtleties of the original Greek-lies a carefully hidden layer of information. Here, the actual technique of the miracle is revealed in the form of twelve precise and realistic steps to extraordinary living.
Scholarly, inspiring, and amazingly consistent with contemporary metaphysical thought, The Twelve Conditions of a Miracle is essential reading if you want to work a transformation in your own life.
Customer Reviews:
Seek Miracles not Magic.......2007-02-14
This is a beautiful book describing the 12 conditions for a miracle to happen. Each chapter uses plain language and illustrates why each condition must be met as a stepping stone to the next. It's back to basics with Divine Will. When you start to pray and spiritually surrender the concept, notion, and manifestation of a miracle is underway. Trust, Accept, Be Wise, and Know that communion with the Divine is miraculous. Remember ... God parted the Red Sea in Exodus ... NOT Moses... Only God. And remember ... The Pharaoh of Egypt tried in vain with his Sorcerers to stop Moses from freeing the Israelites but they drowned in a sea of defeated ego. My point is .... miracles are what turn your life around ... magic is well ... manipulation at best ... and natural law always reverses and corrects it with consequence.
Excellent Life-Changing Book.......2005-12-30
I picked this book up at a book sale and really didn't know what to expect. The title was catchy so I decided to start reading it. Being an avid reader of new age books, I had to take a glimpse. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. The author explains how to create miracles in your life using tools such as meditation, generosity, and compassion. This is going to be one of the books that stays on my bookshelf that I will refer to repeatedly. Don't even question buying this book, you won't be disappointed. The only question I have is...where has Todd Michael been hiding and what further readings does he have available?
Are You Ready for a Miracle?.......2005-02-18
One of the hallmarks of a creative mind is the ability to reframe the ordinary and familiar, to rethink the things we are certain we know well, and represent them in new and intriguing perspectives. Todd Michael has the gift of creativity.
In "The Twelve Conditions of a Miracle," Michael reconsiders the story he calls the Alpha Passage. It's a story any Christian can easily recount - the miracle of the loaves and the fishes. Michael asks if Jesus, a great teacher who said we would do more than he did, demonstrated a clear and concrete method we could use to become miracle workers. He answers his question compellingly by returning to the original Greek to reexamine the miracle from the perspective of the original writer. We learn much from this not-so-simple exercise. A wealth of meaning appears in the original that has been lost in the versions we are more accustomed to reading.
Michael's twelve conditions are merely a literary device, for each condition is expressed in a larger number of stand-alone actions. Having mastered them all, the reader would indeed become a miracle worker. But by simply beginning, I have seen miracles occur in my own life.
The cadence of "The Twelve Conditions of a Miracle" is uneven and even unsettling. Michael draws the reader into his subject slowly, systematically building the evidence for his case early on. By contrast, latter portions of the book seem rushed, less well-considered. However, it's easy to overlook such flaws because this is a book to savor - slowly, deliciously.
Will it work for you?
Depends.
Just reading this book is not enough to change your life. Your results depend on whether and to what extent you put its principles into action.
It could take a lifetime to master all that's in this little book. It's well worth your time.

"128 Ways to Prevent Alzheimer's and Other Dementias"
Very worthy of a slow, satisfying read (plus pondering!).......2004-12-21
Todd Michael takes the very familiar New Testament Story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 and outlines the 12 conditions that made this miracle possible and then takes those conditions and explains how to apply those conditions to create miracles of your own.
The tone is that of a well-loved teacher or guide. I am thinking of some of the movies I have scene with a teacher from an exclusive school in New England - Mr. Hundert from the Emperor's Club comes to mind. Michael bolsters his discoveries with references from Strong's Exhaustive Concordance and has obviously spent a lot of time really digging deeply into the material.
His focus is on the greater good of others, strong on a service attitude. His advice in the Receiving Chapter is to releases something - anything - thus activating an opening for you to receive.
He outlines the 12 Miracle Conditions and then takes it one step further (of critical importance) and that is activating the miracle conditions through application and meditation.
Here is my favorite quote from the book, since it strongly supports my own belief:
"The less a vacuum contains - the emptier it is - the more powerful the attractive force it exerts on the surrounding world." (This explains the releasing in the receiving chapter I mentioned earlier.)
The weakness of the book is the lopsided content within the Conditions. "Engaging" contained only 6 pages (!) It is one of the later chapters. Earlier chapters were 16 pages, 12 pages, with the opening chapter being a whopping 32 pages.
It almost felt like he was pushing a deadline - so the later and equally significant chapters were comparatively rather shallow. They still had great information, I just would have liked to have had more.
I know this is a book I will return to many times over and over. It is a "how-to" that will continue to have an impact on your life.
Choosing to read - and apply - and meditate on the words within will impact your life. Michael says it this way "It's funny, but that's how cause and effect is: the difference in one step, one choice, one word, one little thought form at the point of origin can make a literal world of difference as the flow sweeps us downstream, inexorably amplifying our intent."
See what I mean? Great stuff.....

A collection of pages on finishing.......2000-12-31
This is a good book, but not a great one. I thought it jumped around and did not really have the detail needed for me to put all the information together and produce a great finish. Often the author only describes a single way of performing a step when there are common alternatives. Some important details between steps are missing or too hard to find. I also have Flexner's book "Understanding Wood Finishing" and much prefer it.

Book Description
An unprecedented chronicle of America's bitter war against Japanese imperialism a half-century ago that interweaves poignant first-person memories with unique color photography of the major battle sites paired with evocative archival images.
This fascinating, richly illustrated survey of all aspects of the Pacific war, from Pearl Harbor to Japan's surrender in Tokyo Bay, presents something unique among World War II histories: an extensive color portfolio of dramatic wartime relics surviving decades on most of the Pacific island battlefields. Rusting American landing craft and tanks still can be found on treacherous reefs and beaches where they were tragically stopped by enemy fire so long ago, aircraft of both sides lie hidden in the jungles where they crashed, battle-scarred Japanese pillboxes and artillery emplacements still stand sentinel, and packed-coral landing strips remain as good as new. All such evocative memento mori have been beautifully captured by Jerry Meehl, probably the only photographer to have sought out all these far-flung battle sites, many of them still dangerous underfoot and now off limits to travelers. The authors also searched official archives for pictures that really show the terrors of combat, and often these display the very tanks and amtracs now decomposing on distant invasion beaches. They also found captured prewar photos of Japanese pillboxes and gun emplacements as newly built, and contrast them with their current, war-torn condition.
But this is far from just a "then" and "now" picture book. Each of the more than twenty photo essays of particular battles features a lively narrative that relies heavily on the firsthand accounts of men who were there, archival pictures shot during the actual fighting, and color photographs of the remaining Japanese bunkers and gun emplacements all of which help the reader visualize what hand-to-hand combat in the Pacific war was really like.
Other details: 500 illustrations, 250 in full color

Pacific Legacy.......2007-10-07
I normally don't write reviews but for this book I had to make an exception. Of the hundreds of books on the Pacific war I've read over the years, this stands head and shoulders above any I've read. The photos are spectacular and are well laid out. If you have any interest in the personal part of that war, this is an absolute must. Just as an aside, I recommended to a WWII Seabee friend, he bought it, and found his photo.
Fascinating Book.......2003-01-16
I've read a lot of books about the Pacific war, but this one is definitely my favorite.
Rex Alan Smith served 36 months as an Army Engineer in the Pacific. Since then, he has traveled extensively, visiting and talking with other veterans of the Pacific war. Gerald Meehl has spent years combing the Pacific and photographing the places which played important roles in WWII in the Pacific: places such as Pearl Harbor, Wake Island, Bataan, Corregidor, Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Munda, Tarawa, Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Okinawa; along with lesser-known, but exotic outposts, such as Bora Bora and Pago Pago.
What emerges from their work is a series of more than 20 essays on individual battles, in the order in which they occurred, from the attack on Pearl Harbor to the final surrender at Tokyo Bay. The essays begin with explanations of why the battles were fought, and what strategies were employed. Aerial photographs give you an overall view of the operation. First-hand accounts by the men who fought there give you a chilling sense of what it was like to charge up the beach in the face of withering enemy fire. There are hundreds of photographs - about half in black and white, which were taken during the actual fighting; and half in color, taken by Mr. Meehl some years later, often of the same scenes. The color photographs are beautiful and haunting. You'll see the rusting hulk of an abandoned tank, or the crumbling rubble of a bombed-out pillbox, surrounded by sparkling white beaches with swaying palms, crystal clear ocean waters, and blue skies with fluffy white clouds.
In his introduction to the book, Joe Foss, Medal of Honor winner at Guadalcanal, says, "We could not cover every campaign in detail, nor was it our purpose to present a comprehensive history of the Pacific war. Rather, we tried to create for the reader, while the veterans themselves can recall it, what that war was like--how it looked and felt and smelled--and to examine the legacy today of a war so fiercely fought on faraway Pacific Islands."
Book Description
What has the end of the Cold War meant for East Asia, and for how its people understand their recent history? These thought-provoking essays explore a vigorously contested area in public culture, the wars of the modern era.
All the major East Asian states have undergone a profound reassessment of their experiences from World War II to Vietnam. New and at times aggressive forms of nationalism in Japan, China, South Korea, Vietnam, and Taiwan have affected American security policy in the Pacific and posed a challenge to the post-communist world order. Japan has met fervent opposition to its premiers' visits to the Yasukuni shrine honoring the wartime dead. China has reclaimed a forgotten war history, such as the positive contributions of Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists. South Korea has embraced an interpretation of the Korean War that is hostile to the United States and sympathetic to its North Korean adversaries.
This volume not only illuminates regional and global changes in East Asia today, but also underscores the need for rethinking the Cold War language that continues to inform U.S.-East Asian relations.
Book Description
This is Joan Grant's autobiography of her childhood in England and the development of her psychic talents and ability to recall earlier lives. It is a stunning portrait of the difficulty of a free spirit trying to define herself in Edwardian England--and how that led to the collapse of her first marriage.
Customer Reviews:
Far Memory Lacks Story.......2004-12-08
Although I wanted to like this book, I didn't. There is no central narrative here to tie one anticdote to another, and when something interesting does happen, it is usually described in an off-hand way. Things happen, but the characters (although Joan is really the only one) show no growth.
A combination of the mundane and fascinating.......2003-02-25
Joan Grant was born into a well-off family and this book describes her childhood and young adulthood mainly in terms of nannies, holidays, parties etc. I didn't feel particularly drawn into the narrative - we rarely get to know the characters she introduces. The discovery of her past lives is of course interesting, so for someone who's already read about them, it's nice to find out who she was. However, as a piece of literature, I don't rate this book very highly (it's nothing like Winged Pharaoh).
Delightful, True Period Piece Exploring Reincarnation & More.......1999-12-16
Joan Grant writes her autobiographical story here of discovering, at a very young age, abilities and realities we usually consider unreal. Her childhood, in early 20th-century England, was decorated with experiences of other places, other times, and other selves, and she describes these myriad colorful episodes in delightful, whimsical, humorous, and thoughtful terms. Her ability to tap into and then write about other lifetimes makes a charming and piquant story. Highly recommended!

SECRETS REVEALED, QUESTIONS ANSWERED.......2007-08-24
You will know you have something special in your hands when you first hold the box that encompasses the book AWAKENING FAR MEMORY and the beautifully crafted REINCARNATION CARDS that accompany it. But proceed slowly, for you'll want to place yourself in the proper frame of mind when you start to work with the cards. Yes, I said work. As the authors remind us, the cards are not a type of game but a powerful tool offering insight and knowledge into "the circumstances of other apparent embodiments".
But that's not to say that the book is extremely deep. What it is is a well researched examination of the idea of reincarnation. By slowly investing us with knowledge on this subject we are given the chance to weigh our current believes with what the authors proffer. This works superbly as a lead up to how you use the cards.
Having a desire to find out where and what we may have been in a previous incarnation usually goes hand in hand with bits of mystery about our current embodiement. What you say, you have no bits of mystery? Well much to your delight when you've chosen a card from each of the five groups and go back to read about their basic meanings, questions will be answered that you haven't even asked.
So, find a quiet time and place and bring the book and the cards. Should you choose, add your pendulum to these and maybe even a little incense to create a "far memory" mood. Let your mind take in the information and combine it with some personal resonance. Becoming one with the Universe it's past, present, and future will ensure that secrets are revealed to help in this incarnation and those to come.
Awakening Far Memory.......2007-05-07

I am amazed at the intellecual theory in this book! I would highly suggest that you wake up your memories with these cards. Every few days I bring them out and add more information to my journal and it is incredible how all of a sudden you start having a picture of a previous life!

The Jewish Identity Project: New American Photography
ASIN: 0804750459
Release Date: 2006-01-06 |
Book Description
Part document and part visual poem, Far from Zion is the response of a young American Jew to the historical experience of Ashkenazic Jewry in the last century. In the spirit of a contemplative but unsentimental reckoning, the photographs consider the fragmentation and historical contingency of Jewish experience, the discontinuity and fragility of Jewish identity, and the uncertain meaning of diaspora as a Jewish inheritance. The result is a sequence of pictures that moves between marked and unmarked historical locations in Europe and the United States, portraits of contemporary Jews, and the events of Jewish life. An original essay, “Diasporic Investigations,” elaborates the photographs’ concerns.
In contrast to traditional documentary works aligned with confirmative and expository attitudes toward social testimony, this project looks to the indeterminacies of the photographic image to illuminate social experience that is itself indeterminate and elusive. By turns empathic and circumspect, quiet and pointed, the project addresses the complex actuality of diaspora in our own time.
Beyond its contribution to contemporary photography, the work also responds to Jewish photography (both by and about Jews) specifically. In contrast to the historical work of Roman Vishniac, for example, the book rejects nostalgic reclamation of vanished worlds; in contrast to the contemporary work of Frédéric Brenner, the book refrains from modish theatricality, and instead confronts the legacy of the passing Jewish century through interrogatory observation. Locating documentary photography at the intersection of history, geography, literature, and philosophy, the book promotes a dialogue between these fields through pictures.

Book Description
In an era of globalisation, there is an unprecedented scale and nature of contemporary migrant flows, as well as the flow of goods, capital, ideas, images and technology. This sheer number and mobility of contemporary migrants clearly has massively disruptive effects on traditional modes of dwelling however they were manifest in everyday life. But contemporary migrancy also has important consequences for the way dwelling is conceptualised more generally. This book is concerned with the modes of dwelling that emerge through migrancy; it is also concerned with the effects these modes of dwelling have for dominant conceptions of space and place; and finally, it is interested in the kinds of architectures that become possible if those effects are taken seriously.
This book inspects the intersections between architectures of place and flows of migrancy. It does so without seeking to defend the idea of place, nor lament its passing. Rather, this book is an exploration of the often complex and unorthodox modes of dwelling that are emerging precisely from within the ruins of the idea of place. This exploration is informed by post-structuralist analyses of architecture and urbanism, and their representation in media such as film. It focuses on the Pacific Rim as an intensified zone of global flows. Within the Pacific Rim there are complex tensions between the new economies of Asia and the settler nations of Canada, the US, Australia and New Zealand. These tensions produce difficulties for the narrative of the nation state, and herald conditions that no longer conform to the geo-political norms of the old world.
