This is one involving book........1998-07-24
The Amber Enchantress is an excellent book. When compared to the other books in the prism pentad series it finishes in the top. It has many intriguing sci fantasy characteristics that make this book a pleasure to read. It is a straightforward and well composed novel with pleanty of excitement and cool plot twists. If you like dungeons and dragons or liked the first to books in the series you have got to check this one out. Don't read the Amber Enchantress without at least reading the first book in the series or you won't be able to make heads or tales of it. This is a fun novel thats hard to put down. Its a great weekend read.
This is fantasy taken to the extreme!!!.......1998-02-27
This is fantasy I like. The normal old Tolken ideas, but given a really strange twist... well actually about 1,000 really strange twists. This book is easly the best of the series, and the most interesting to read. There is just so much to say about it, but I will let the book speak for it's self.
A memorable tale of a memorable woman........1997-04-02
Now here's a fantasy novel, and a female protagonist, worth identifying with! Sadira sets out on a dangerous quest alone, leaving behind both of her lovers, because she refuses to let herself be fought over. Along the way, reminders of her past, including the father she's never known and the halfling chieftain she swore loyalty to in the first book, distract her from her goals. It takes beauty, strength, and compassion for Sadira to get what she wants, and fortunately she has all three

3-STAR RATING IS BEING GENEROUS!.......2007-09-05
Mack Bolan, Number 90, from Peter Leslie, June, 1986, is one of the most atypical books that I've read in this series.
Mack Bolan on vacation? And on vacation in Iceland? I had to go to the internet and print a map of Iceland and even with that most of the places mentioned in this book do not appear on the map!
The book is well written but other than that not much can be said for it. For the first 100 pages Mack has very little dialogue with any other character. He is totally alone. He has several fire fights but not much in the way of conversation takes place. We have snow, we have ice, we have glacier, we have glacial moraine, we have an underground river, but much of the time is spent with Mack in a kayak. Yeah, that's correct, Mack Bolan in a kayak. Sans jets, helicopters, et. al. Don't look for high tech in this book.
A reader will read more than half the book before getting any indication as to the mission which has been forced on Mack Bolan. This is one of the strangest books of the Executioner series I've read. And I did have an experience I've never encountered before: had to force myself to finish this totally uninteresting book.
Read it at your own risk. I love the Mack Bolan books for the best in men's adventure reading, but this book is a clinker. I guess they cannot all be winners.
Semper Fi.
A great read.......2005-07-14
If you have not read any of the Mack Bolan books this is a good one to start with. I have read all of them from 1970 till now whenever they have come out and have never really been disappointed with any of them they are better reads then a lot of other books..

Book Description
The exhilarating epic blazes to life — featuring illustrations by a lead artist on the LORD OF THE RINGS film trilogy.
"Look into the flames and let your minds empty. . . . For this is a tale of blood and heat and ashes."
It is a tale that has been retold countless times through the centuries — and here, in an enthralling edition illustrated by a noted Tolkien artist, the mighty Beowulf is well set to capture new legions of followers. This contemporary retelling of the ancient epic — narrated with a touch of banter by the faithful Wiglaf and featuring vividly dramatic illustrations — follows the mythic hero from his disarming of the gruesome Grendel to his sword battle with the monster’s sea hag mother to his final, fiery showdown with an avenging dragon.

Customer Reviews:
I just shouldn't have read it that second time.......2002-09-30
BLOOD HEAT has the honor of being the first of the New Adventures that I read. And, at the time, it was more than enough to pull me enthusiastically into the series. I was fascinated by the new companion, Benny. I was quite interested in the story-arc that began in this book. Seeing the old television stories in a new light and from a different perspective really warmed my inner fan-boy heart. Before I reread the story, now many years later, I couldn't wait to see how well it had aged. Although I had never read it since my initial perusal, it had always remained one of my favorite NAs.
To say that rereading this book came as a disappointment would be an enormous understatement. Perhaps it's because the NAs (and later, the EDAs) would reach much greater heights. Maybe I was a less sophisticated reader back in those days. But whatever the reason, I couldn't help but notice that many of the sequences really didn't seem to be much beyond the level of the Target novelisations. There are far too many action-oriented sequences that simply weren't interesting enough to sustain my attention. A lot of the characters varied between being stereotypical and just plain dull. The plot meandered into numerous vague areas; the storyline just feeling boring and uninspired. "Dreary characters wandering off on mind-numbing wild goose chases" is a summary of far too much of this story.
The book is structured around several moral dilemmas. When is war inevitable? What price is too high to pay for victory? To fight monsters, is it necessary to become one? Each of these questions (and the many others that the book raises) are interesting and intriguing concepts. Yet Mortimore never brings these questions out of the realm of one-dimensionality. Instead of complicated character motivations, we're treated to stock, clichéd ciphers. We have the warmongers, the peacemakers, and the pawns, but not one of them has apparently given more than thirty seconds of thought to their situation. Some very interesting questions are raised, but the answers that we're given are beyond shallow. Far too many of these apparently high-concept arguments just come across as overblown, superficial, and pretentious.
A few sequences and conversations that occur are fairly enjoyable. Unfortunately, they're rather spread out. It was a nice idea to see the how some familiar characters dealt with extraordinary circumstances, but the execution was sorely lacking in many areas. A few of these gems did manage to shine through; indeed, there's a powerful scene near the end where one of the characters takes his limited portrayal to the logical conclusion, creating an involving and emotional passage. But, unfortunately, this is the exception rather than the rule. For every one thing that I was interested in, there would be half a dozen things that had me rolling my eyes. Great massive chunks of this book could have been cut right out without losing anything. There would have been much to be gained from magnifying the things that this book did manage to succeed at, rather than having them buried under mounds of uninteresting and unbelievable moralizing. Giving the characters some realistic motivations wouldn't have hurt either.
If I hadn't reread this one, I would still have the much higher opinion of it that I formed back when I read it for the first time. Still it's interesting to read this in light of where the Doctor Who books were to go in the future. The topics and ideas discussed here about war and fighting monsters would be revisited again and again (a few times by Jim Mortimore himself). BLOOD HEAT shows these arguments in their immature infancy and at least we can see how much better they got.
When dinosaurs ruled the Earth..........2001-07-08
After the TARDIS is invaded by a mysterious force, Bernice is hurled out into the Vortex and the ship itself lands on contemporary Earth. But it isn't the Earth that the Doctor and Ace expect to find on emerging - this Earth is populated by dinosaurs. Something has happened in the past, and the Silurians rule the world...
A sort-of sequel to the TV serial 'The Silurians' (novelised under the name 'The Cave Monsters'), this novel is the first in a sequence of five (the remainder being 'The Dimension Riders', 'The Left-Handed Hummingbird', 'Conundrum' and 'No Future') which sees the Doctor and companions dealing with threats that tie into the Doctor's past, and that have a single for behind them all.
Having said that, this novel does stand on its own, and is set in a world where the Doctor was slain towards the end of 'The Silurians', and looks at what might have happened under those circumstances. It features the return of old allies the Brigadier, Liz Shaw and Jo Grant and puts an interesting twist on the lives of those people.
It is not, however, simply wallowing in the series' past. There are numerous new elements, the ongoing character development of the Doctor, Ace and Benny continues, and the story climaxes in a moral dilemma that drives further wedges between the companions.
Jim Mortimore uses this book to explore the "might have beens" of the Who universe, doing an excellent job while reinforcing what we already know and accept about the series.
Blood Heat sparks the reaturn of the Silurians........1997-09-24
It shows how life would be without the Doctor. The last scene where the Brigadier saves a Silurian's eggs touches the heart. It also shows very well how the Brigadier go crazy because of the war. Well done Jim Mortimore.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A589163. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Computer Aided Prototyping System (CAPS) is an integrated set of tools that is used for rapid prototyping of real time systems. Prototype System Description Language (PSDL) is the prototyping language that captures the requirements and produces executable prototypes. Prototypes can be created by using specially designed PSDL Editor, which can automatically generate PSDL code from data flow graphs. The Heterogeneous Systems Integrator (HSI) is an extension to CAPS, designed to automate the process of integrating complex distributed systems, where the subsystems can reside on different locations, be implemented in different hardware, operating systems and programming languages. It is envisioned that the HSI will be a distributed system itself. Users at remote sites need not install the entire HSI system, but only the User Interface for entering the PSDL specification of the target systems. This research is the first step in the evolution of HSI. The focus is to create a portable user interface, which can be used in any environment (hardware and operating system). We have designed and implemented a platform independent llSI user interface using the Java programming language. The functionalities of CAPS Release 2.0 PSDL Editor are mainly preserved in this implementation with a few added features. The new editor shows significant improvement in performance and user friendliness over the previous
Book Description
Based on 20 years' worth of university lectures and proposals to the United Nations, this book addresses the issue of peace from the Buddhist perspective of compassion, interconnectedness of all life, and absolute respect for human life. Informed by the teachings of Nichiren, the 13th-century Japanese Buddhist teacher and reformer, this book about the subject of peace from various angles, including economics, the environment, disarmament, religion, and culture. Ikeda writes that "nothing is more precious than peace," and through self-mastery, dialogue, and belief in the sovereignty of the people, the world may come to know a peaceful existence.
Customer Reviews:
Humanism Altruism and Righteous Compassion is the Way to Go.......2003-12-30
SGI President Ikeda's clean-cut and relatively important perspective on Peace is greatly emphasized in this book. His humanistic ideals which he incorporates from Nichiren Buddhism greatly reflect both his hope AND action toward a peaceful world. I particularly admired his propositions to make and enhance a more positive environment among our racially, socially and spiritually diversed society---given all for the sake of eveyrone's happiness and the achievement of peace. President Ikeda truly understands the formula needed to lead everyone to their own content and happiness and how can human beings create a more beneficial environment for themselves. His ideas on humanism, altruism and peace are realistic and something that is truly relevant in our disturbed society. A very good scholarly work worth every penny. You'll not regret reading this one.
What we need today.......2002-04-26
Daisaku Ikeda outlines steps towards a peaceful planet.
Quoting philosophers, historians, heroes, he sets out a guide to making peace possible. "If you want peace, prepare for peace."
In this time of war, war and more war, to know there are people actively working towards a peaceful planet and future is very encouraging. Ikeda explains how we each have to start with ourselves, our family, our community. Through dialogue, and a commitment to truly desire peace.
For those who believe we do not have to go to war to make a peaceful world.
A refreshing change from the usual esoteric Buddhist fare.......2001-08-10
This excellent and well informed book will be of great interest to anyone interested in the historic and philosophic dynamics of our changing world. Ikeda is a wonderful writer whose understanding of Buddhism, Christianity and other world religions helps us to see current world conditions more clearly. His ability to incorporate the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and Nichiren into a discussion of world history and contemporary discourse will be welcomed by those who have felt confused by the esoteric approach of other Buddhist writings. As an avid reader and writer, Ikeda has cultivated great skill in presenting complex intellectual ideas in a way that makes them relevant to the everyday lives of individuals. Addressing such approaches to history and culture as relativism, universalism, orientalism, concepts of time and war cultures he makes a convincing presentation of peace and global harmony as attainable goals. The structure of this book is clear and easy to reference, making it an excellent text for teachers and activists. For a reader who has found so much of contemporary Buddhist writings alienating and unrealistic this book is a refreshing and exciting addition to social dialogue on how to create a better world. Highly recommended.
Enthusiastically recommended reading for peace activists.......2001-05-18
For The Sake Of Peace: Seven Paths To Global Harmony, A Buddhist Perspective is the result of more than 25 years of UN Peace prize recipient, spiritual leader, educator, and philosopher Daisaku Ikeda's proposals to the United Nations and lectures at universities around the world. With his vision for achieving peace in the new century based upon the life- affirming teachings of Nichiren (13th century Japanese Buddhist teacher and reformer) as well as great world thinkers and philosophers ranging from Confucius, Plato, and Aristotle, to Tolstoy, Gandhi, and Toynbee, Ikeda reveals the issue of peace from the Buddhist perspective of compassion, the interconnectedness of all life, and an absolute respect for human life. For The Sake Of Peace offers "seven paths" ranging from self-mastery and dialogue to global awareness and disarmament that if taken will show humanity the way to live happily together on our finite planet. For The Sake Of Peace is enthusiastically recommended reading for peace activists, students of Buddhist philosophy, and those who have followed and appreciated Daisaku Ikeda's work and thought for the past three decades.

Excellent source for numbers.......2000-11-24
This is a great book of numbers. Every Pontiac line included. Numbers given on all. As with other numbers books there are a few mistakes, but that can surely be overlooked when you open this up. Production numbers of each car, brief histories, etc.. This book has it all. Even if you like just one Pontiac and are enthusiastic about it I recommend it. You won't be dissapointed.

truly timeless.......2006-05-09
Just received the book and am almost finished with the first sweater. There is no other word but gorgeous! Patterns are easy to follow. Am working my way up to the most advanced and most beautiful
Complicated but worth it!.......2006-03-11
This is a beautiful book! It is definitley not for the beginner knitter. These designs are for advanced knitters only! But the finished creations are worth the effort and are show stoppers!
Not worth it.......2005-10-05
Don't waste your money--put it towards an Elizabeth Zimmerman, Barbara Walker, Sally Melville or Melanie Falik book instead. I didn't find 1 pattern in here that I would use--it was either too complicated, impractical, dated looking or had a ridiculous guage.

Book Description
With its attractive contemporary styling and unbeatable price, this invaluable guide to more than 10,000 fonts and computer typefaces is an essential purchase for graphic designers. The world of type has undergone massive changes in the past few years, allowing designers to order, pay for, and download a font in just a few minutes; the challenge is to select the right type beforehand, and that’s where this huge encyclopedia is a boon. With fonts ranging from Arabic to Bitstream to Teluga, it offers unrivaled inspiration to those who work with type everyday.
Customer Reviews:
big book, lots of fonts.......2007-01-11
It is a large book with lots of fonts but the fonts are so small you can hardly see them. This is more of a reference font book than anything.
Not exactly what I was expecting.......2006-12-19
I guess I didn't read the other reviews as carefully as I should have. I was looking for a book which would list the various fonts and give a complete (A-Z) example.
This book does that, but the author is primarily concerned with the history of fonts, which I don't really have any interest in nor is it relative to my needs. I wanted an alphabetical listing of fonts so I could flip through the book and find a font that fit my project. I haven't really figured out her organization, it's supposed to be by style and historical order, I think, I don't have the time or interest to figure it out. It's annoying. Finding examples of the fonts I have is tedious. I have to look them up in the index then find them in the book. Doesn't allow for the quick flip through I wanted to aid in font selection.
I decided to look up my fonts and hi-lite them, but this is a slow process and the ink hi-liting doesn't dry as quickly as I'd like causing the opposite page to pick up some of the color which may be confusing later. I've also found many of my most interesting fonts are not in this book. Plus sometimes her examples look nothing like my font with the same name, like architec. Her example is much heavier and nothing like the font I've seen in so many places. There are no dingbat fonts either, which I was really hoping for.
Considering it's girth it is amazing that so many semi-common fonts are left out; fonts often used in commercial layout.
A Beautiful Book and Great Reference.......2006-12-01
This is one of my all-time favorite type specimen books. It's beautifully designed and printed. Easy to handle and has about 12,000 of the best of the digital typefaces. Includes designer's name, date, foundry, etc. One of the features is that complete alphabets are shown plus a specimen line. All are the same size for easy comparison. It'd be nice if the Italic "companion" fonts were shown but as one soon realizes, that wouldn't be possible. This book is 1-1/2" thick (nice paper!). Indexes include a listing of the designers so that one can find all the type faces a person designed. Highly recommended. Use it as Gwyn Headley intended it to be used and you'll find why I think so highly of it. I've worked with type for nearly 65 years and as you can imagine I've used a lot of type books over the years. This is ranked very close to the top.
Ridiculously small printing- hard to see important detail.......2006-09-30
The printing was quite UNNECESSARILY small, and it is very difficult seeing the details clearly with the naked eye on many of the more elaborate fonts. Mr. Headley may have done a nice job putting this book together (the two stars are for him and him alone), but the publisher has cheated both the editor and the reader by apparently trying to save an extra buck where printing costs were concerned. I was extremely disappointed with this volume.
portable great font book.......2006-03-05
It shows A-Z both in upper and lower case and numbers for every font. Nice and clear design of the display for different fonts. Index of fonts in the back is easy to find a font if you know the name. Besides, there is another index of fontographers. It doesn't show font family though. It shows only the basic type in a font family, but it's OK to me. It's hard to look up a font if you don't know the name. It seperates fonts into 6 catagory - uncial & black letter, Serifs, Lineales, Miscellaneous, Scripts and Display. Under the catagory, also has subcatagory. I like it and I think it is a very good deal of the price, too.

Book Description
Name This Font - A Practical Encyclopedia of Letterforms is intended for use by all who work with text and letters - graphic designers, computer artists, copywriters, printers, typesetters. Name This Font is an invaluable new tool that eliminates the tiresome and frustrating search for a font name through hundreds of pages of font catalogs. This unique publication is extremely helpful in (a) identifying a font in any medium - book, advertisement, billboard, computer or TV screen, (b) finding a font substitute, and (c) selecting a font to use.
Name This Font is envisioned as a multi-volume publication whose aim is to illustrate the most popular and interesting fonts in current use. The first two volumes start with the uppercase letterforms; these letterforms are the easiest to identify, and, as the ones most often used in headlines, signs and logos, seem to be most important. Future volumes will bring lowercase and italic faces, numerals and symbols.
Volume 1 displays sans serif, serif and condensed classes. Volume 2 deals with the decorative/design/display, script, and blackletter/uncial fonts. Each volume is designed to be used independently of the other.
Individual characters of the alphabet are arranged in separate charts, where just one letterform is shown, progressively, in all its variations. The letterforms in charts are large (72 points), making all details of their design easily noticeable. This original and highly-efficient arrangement allows the user to find the name of a given letterform in a matter of seconds.

Great Books for Identifying Fonts.......2001-04-10
These books have been very helpful in identifying fonts. Being a Production Artist, I often get a hardcopy of a layout and am expected to recreate it. Mr. Skrivan's books have been a great help in identifying fonts. These books have also been helpful in finding a font to use. If I need a specific type of font, I can look under individual letters and find which one I have in mind. This is most helpful with script, display and blackletter fonts. The only drawback is that the books are only uppercase letters. Hopefully, there will be a book for lowercase letters soon.
