    Book Description

It is not a pleasant epoch in one’s life the first forty-eight hours at a large public school. I have known strong-minded men of mature age confess that they never thought of it without a shiver.\' (Excerpt from Chapter 1)

              Product Description

Anonymous novel, originally published in Great Britain in 1857. George Alfred Lawrence (1827-1876), wrote this, his first and best-known novel, consisting of the portrayal of the social buccaneer, Livingstone, with his vast physical proportions, his amours, his thirst for adventure and blood, and his odd speech, sporting slang and classical allusion. In early Victorian times, blackguardism, composed of Byronic traits, had replaced Christianity. It set a trend, not only in literature ('Ouida', or Louise de la Ramée, was a notable disciple) but even in the mode of dress and behaviour of the young men of the period. Guy Livingstone was parodied by Bret Harte in his 'Guy Heavystone'.

Nothing quite like curling up with a purring cat in your lap and an adventures cat in your book! ^_^

As with all compendiums there are some good, and some bad stories, but I feel that the good drasticaly outweight the bad. I've found this to be a well collected anthology series and would highly recommend it to anyone who is fond of cats!

5 out of 5 stars Cat Lover Heaven!.......2002-01-17

This series of short story books is an absolute pleasure to read!
Totally enjoyable short fantasy stories. Enough to get a taste of the author's style. A whole lot of fun.
                Please keep them coming!

4 out of 5 stars A mixed bag of 18 fantasy stories (no sci-fi this time)........2001-02-25

Bell, Clare: "Bomber and the Bismarck" - The HMS Ark Royal rescues a cat with bomber-jacket markings from the North Sea, and takes him on as their new ship's cat - to discover that they have the only (unofficial) survivor of HMS Hood aboard.

Belden, Wilanne Schneider: "A Puma and a Panther" - Belden's stories tend to be about exceptional children, but in this case, the story isn't told from the viewpoint of Christine or her little brother Ian. Instead, we have Bat's viewpoint - who's settling for life as Christine's pet, since he's denied his rightful place as her familiar, having been born into a non-magical world.

Boyer, Elizabeth H.: "The Last Gift" - My favorite story in this book. Isolf, presented to the jotun on her 16th birthday, is lonely, so the jotun decides to create a new creature to be her companion - but he only has tiny scraps of spirits left from the making of the world's animals, and they're a mixed bag. Combining them in his cauldron to make a bigger piece produces unexpected results. "I don't remember adding claws - or teeth!"

Cirone, Patricia B.: "Papercut Luck" - Ling Mei is now alone on the family junk; by chance, she wasn't aboard when the Emperor's soldiers seized her family. All the lucky papercuts in the market have been sold, so she buys one for courage, since courage can make luck.

Dunn, Marylois: "Shado" - Cat and White Cat are back (see _Tales of the Witch World 1_ and _Catfantastic_). White Cat is deeply depressed, having been prevented from having kittens for the last 2 winters. Cat, out hunting field mice on a foggy morning, finds just the thing to cheer her up.

Griffin, P.M.: "In Bastet's Service" - No relation to her stories in Catfantastic 1 or 4, but rather to those in 3 & 5. These stories begin with a cat facing Bastet prior to reincarnation, and by their very nature have dea ex machina situations, but not quite in a way that makes sense. For instance, the cat facing his 2nd incarnation in this story died of abuse in his 1st life; Bastet now intervenes to try to help him recover. We're never told why, if she can do this, she left him to his fate before.

Inks, Caralyn: "Shadows" - The world setting here is unfamiliar to me, and we're never told much about it. Jariel Belldancer and his camilacat partner break an ancient trap, to free a tortured human and the shadow of an immortal Pierdon.

Major, A. R.: "The Execution" - New York City is divided into many `kingdoms' of cats (a cross between kingdoms with formal courts and gang territories). Since Flintface the dog killed a kitten after receiving his only warning, the local king put out a contract on him - and Sir Ex has been assigned to get Flintface to `the place of execution' at 5:30 Wednesday morning.

Mayhar, Ardath: "Hermione at Moon House" - See also Catfantastic 1, 3, and 5 (but not 4). After the distressing end of her last job as a (19th century) wizard's familiar, Hermione was happy to relocate to the home of a nice, quiet astronomer. Unfortunately, kittens have a talent for finding trouble wherever they happen to be, despite a mother's best efforts. Written in the same old-fashioned diarist style as the previous entry in volume 1. If you like the content here, try Robert Lawson's _Ben and Me_.

Miller, Ann & Rigly, Karen: "Quest of Souls" - The cat and apprentice must rescue the souls of the rest of the castle's inhabitants from a `soul robber.' We don't see enough of the victims to care much.

Miller, Sasha: "Ede's Earrings" - Ede is the familiar of Ferdon, a young wizard (just out of the Academy) with his first practice. He depends on her, so she's able to keep him out of most kinds of trouble - until he meets Dala one market day. This one is continued in Catfantastic 3 & 5.

Moon, Elizabeth: "Clara's Cat" - This story is told from Jeanine's point of view - Clara's closest relative, a divorced alcoholic who's moved in to take care of Clara in more ways than one. This one's pretty disturbing, since Jeanine's intention of murdering Clara for her money is made clear.

Norton, Andre: "Hob's Pot" - 2nd installment of the adventures of Noble Warrior, Siamese cat (in his own language, his name's Thargun Neklop), and his `princess' Emmy. (A Noble Warrior story appears in each of the 5 volumes of Catfantastic to date.) Emmy's father has now returned from his work with the East India Company - but one of his parting gifts bears a curse.

Scarborough, Elizabeth: "The Queen's Cat's Tale" - Camelot, from the viewpoint of the aforementioned cat, now that she has retired with the Queen into a convent.

Schaub, Mary H.: "The Keep-Shape Spell" - These characters reappear in Catfantastic 3 & 4, but not 5. This time, the spell revealing a creature's true shape accidentally hit the wizard's *cat*, so Drop (formerly Raindrop) must adjust to life as a human for awhile.

Schlobin, Roger C.: "Of Age and Wisdom" - A tale of ancient times, when cats and dragons (of the Chinese variety) ruled the earth, but don't expect Dunsany here.

Schwartz, Susan: "Critical Cats" - The protagonist, Puff, has spent his life in a wire cage, as a blood donor for the animal hospital, and is embittered toward humans. Nevertheless, he's drawn as a poor soul whose attitude needs changing, to be `saved' by the pet-patient in the next cage. (Puff is left in hospital by the grateful owner.) Stylistically well-written, I suppose, but the preachy aspect isn't to my taste.

Springer, Nancy: "In Carnation" - The nameless cat, whose previous 8 `lives' have spanned millenia, can take a human shape, but forgot human speech 4 lives ago. In this life, she takes human shape (naked, of course) and gets a job as a carnival stripper.

This is a great book, filled with lots of stories of cats and magic. Any cat fanatic should love it!

5 out of 5 stars A delightful collection of shorts!.......1998-03-09

These are great stories not only for cat people, but fantasy/si-fi readers as well. A collection of shorts is a wonderful place for authors to get exposure and feel out new story lines as well as giving beginning and long-time genre followers a chance to expand their tastes. It is always fun when you see someone new in the older collections grow to become a fine author!

Picture this: a world where the acid rain is a constant downpour, where you can't go outside without smearing "safe jam" on your exposed skin, where militaristic brutes storm from dwelling to dwelling demanding paper clips, nails, and anything else the Syndicate deems essential. Welcome to the Shelf, Adam Rapp's disturbing and lasting vision of a post-apocalyptic earth. We don't know exactly how it got this bad, or when, but we do know that no one talks about birthdays or Christmas anymore.

On the Shelf, the miserable are corralled together to meet their fates. Elders are taken away in the Flying Fox and never seen again. The Undertwelves are tattooed with numbers and marched off to the Pits--a worse circle of this inferno, where these Digit Kids are forced to break rocks with splittingpicks until they fall down dead. Thanks to the brave kindness of a coffin builder, 11-year-old Whensday has managed to escape the Pits. She takes refuge for a time helping Tick Burrowman build his bodyboxes, but when she fears he's going to sell her, she runs away to the Bone Trees. There she meets Honeycut and Oakley, two other children who have eluded the Pits, and the three make an effort at raw survival.

Whensday tells this gripping, memorable story with the frankness of a child and in a dialect that reflects the brutal reality of the new world order. In such a place there is no time for proper grammar, and words must be invented for each fresh hell (homes are now mere "life holes," the primary food is "cornslop," and coughed up phlegm is "lungpuddles"). But somehow, amid the horror, Rapp manages to weave impressive beauty and hope. Whensday is a character to fall in love with and root for, who understands "Strength don't always come from muscles and size. Sometimes it comes from that stuff that hides in your spit." Most of all, she helps us appreciate the small things: a bird's nest, a spoon, an elephant made of foil. --Brangien Davis

                Book Description

The Copper Elephant is the riveting story of 11-year-old Whensday, who lives in The Shelf, a postapocalyptic world of nonstop poisonous rain ruled by the ruthless Aston Loe and his Syndicate men. Whensday is saved from the slave labor of the Pits by a coffin maker who intends to sell her to a childless matron from Top Town. Whensday flees into the Bone Trees. There she meets two other "undertwelves" - Oakley and Honeycut - and, banding together, they learn about love, strength, loss, and survival.

The Copper Elephant is surreal, full of compelling action and memorable characters. As in his previous novel, The Buffalo Tree, Adam Rapp's language is original, vivid, and powerful.

3 out of 5 stars I Can't See the Future Being Much Bleaker Than This.......2005-09-21

This book is about as dark and horrible as a future can get. It's written as a children's book, but this is no book for kids. There's some pretty scary stuff and rather harsh language as well (he dropped a few f-bombs and the 11 year old main character was molested). Young adults, maybe. Kids, definitely not.

The language of the kids reminded me a lot of the kids in the movie "Mad Max : Beyond Thunderdome". And there's the run-on sentence of all time - it's 3 pages long.

                4 out of 5 stars ok, this one's weird.......2002-07-04

The world is well done and detailed, the characters are interesting, but forgive me Mr. Rapp I couldn't find much point or plot to the book! Perhaps a wiser reader could, or perhaps there will be a sequel that'll get more done. I'd certainly buy a sequel.

5 out of 5 stars A bleak view of the future........2000-05-28

On a post appocolyptic Earth of the future, ruled by a dictator, eleven-year-old Whensday fights a daily battle for survival. She escapes slave labor in a mine after being rescued by a merchant. Impoverished, he decides to sell her to a childless woman. Whensday things she is being sold back into slavery, so she escapes into the devestated landscape, where acid rain falls daily. She joins up with two other children, but things grow steadily worse, and Whensday ends up being raped, while the friend who tried to save her is put to death. This book is not for the faint of heart, but if you do read it, it gives you a look at a decimated future, and a young girl so determined to survive that she never gives up, in spite of all the horrors she goes through.

3 out of 5 stars Very strange book........2000-05-13

Well, there wasn't really much of a problem I had with this book, I just...couldn't stay interested. Maybe its because I'm a fan of realisticness, but I doubt it. This book was just...boring. Adam Rapp is a great author, which he proved in "The Buffalo Tree," but this one just couldn't do it for me.

If there was on good thing though, it HAD to be Oakley Brownhouse. He was hilarious, imagining him as a little nine year old in the stuff he goes through. Its really quite funny.

I just wish the whole book was as interesting.

                1 out of 5 stars Worst Book I've Read in 50 Years.......2000-04-16

Story takes place in some undefined post-cataclysmic era, presumably on earth, in which the author paints the bleakest possiblepicture of existence where children are enslaved workers in pits, poisonous rain falls unrelentingly, few living things exist other than humans, and general unimaginable misery prevails on every page.

The author is fond of literary gimmicks such as NOT using quotation marks to identify dialogue but rather using the conventions; I go, or, I went, or, I'm like; followed by the dialogue. It is filled with his own version of word meanings such as quickdust, life hole, digit kids, creature clouds, blackfrost and so forth. No prologue or epilogue sheds any light whatsoever on the causes of the situation.

The subject of the title 'The Copper Elephant' is a large improperly made figure of an elephant as talisman. The maker is an idiot boy who cobbles together bits of aluminum foil and other metals into his version of an elephant which he believes will help him find his missing younger brother...

The characters all speak insufferably bad versions of what we think of as English, deliberately contrived by the writer. Without doubt one of the worst novels I have read in fifty years...END

In the words of Michael Laitman, It is beyond human comprehension to understand the essence of such spiritual qualities as total altruism and love. This is for the simple reason that human beings cannot comprehend how such feelings can exist at all, as e

5 out of 5 stars A truly beautiful book .......2006-08-23

I have read many books on so called "spirituality" by authors who were either Schizophrenic, or had written some God awful book to increase the size of their bank balances.

What I was looking for was a book that tried to answer the questions about lifes most essential questions. Written by someone who was at least not a charlatan. Like thousands of other people I have always been plagued by this question "What is the meaning of my life ?" So many books have been written on the subject already and none of them that I have read, have really struck a chord with me, nor did religious explanations.

This book was very different from the moment I started to read it because it really hit me like the proverbial ton of bricks. I didn't always find myself agreeing with what the author had written - I actually found some of it very hard to accept. But actually the more I read the parts I didn't agree with, the more I realised there was something genuine behind them. The more I read this book the harder I found it to actually put it down. It became quite apparent that the author was genuine and sincere in his writings, and had no ulterior motive.

The book is a practical guide to how a person can come to a realisation of a completely different reality in a very practical manner. Mind blowing!

I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who thinks about existence becauase I believe this book presents explanations to humanitys most humiliating and haunting questions. Even if you don't agree with it I am sure this book will change the way you think about things forever.

This is by far the best book I have read on the subject of Kabbalah. It has an amazing ability to awaken the 'point in the heart'. The sections dealing with 'Ego' are particularly good.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for People Interested in Kabbalah.......2005-12-15

This is a wonderful book to get beyond the hype about the science of Kabbalah and to understand the reality of Kabbalah. A wonderful journey towards understanding what the Creator truly wants for us. The book does not spout easy answers, but rather explains the fundamental process we need to undertake to obtain spiritual correction. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Kabbalah in particular and spirituality in general.

Mr Laitman has given an easy to understand description to what Kabbalah truly is. No gimmicks just real kabbalah. What an easy way to read about the purpose of life. I congratulate Mr Laitman on a beautiful approach to explaining kabbalah to those who really want an answer to the purpose of their life.

The book has many cute projects. I wanted more of a hand painted look for the walls in my nursery, so the stencils included were a little too "simple." Lots of decoupage pictures for accessories or enlarging on a color copier.

My heart breaks for Michele, although I hope Kevin finally grew up. What a horrible thing to think you did the best you could for your child and find out that the people you trusted killed her! I really hope Michele does have more children some day. She's beaten herself up enough over this.

                                    Book Description

My Name Is Michele recounts the harrowing, redemptive memoir of Dr. Michele Engel. Scarred by an abusive mother, she endured childhood prostitution, a stay in an orphanage run by ex Nazis disguised as Catholic nuns, a forced abortion, and consignment to an Israeli kibbutz where her life took a downward moral trajectory.

Over time she adopted seventeen different multiple personalities to cope with life-long trauma, a condition resolved by an empathetic therapist.

In l974 she came to the United States to secure medical assistance for her son. She herself focused on alternative medicine, ultimately becoming a Naturopathic Doctor in Lavonia, Georgia, where she now lives and practices.
