Achieving the high bonnet is the good fortune of the novel's Jean-Marie Gallois, a young confisseur (candy maker) from Provence who has earned an apprenticeship at Paris's famed Faisen d'Or restaurant. But Jean-Marie's ascension to glory is not the novel's central concern; revealing a world entirely devoted to food--getting it, eating it, and discussing it--is. Meals are enjoyed and stories are told, like that of a man "ruined by a dish," the creator of a legendary curry recipe who falls disastrously from great heights when he can no longer obtain the dish's "secret" ingredient. A philosophy is also put before us: "Never expect a perfect dinner to come from a clean kitchen," says a character; "as well as expect one from a laboratory." ....it's porn for cooks! The vivid and colourful descriptions are absolutely mind-blowing. My only advice to someone thinking about reading this is that unless you really know your stuff, you might want to have a copy of Larousse handy, as there are quite a few references to things that the average reader may not understand or know about.

I started to devour this book, then, afraid to get to the end too soon, I began to pace myself---in order to savor the feast thoroughly. Idwal Jones's prose is totally intoxicating--his descriptions of tastes, textures, perfumes are so vivid you can almost taste the rich sauces, smell the aroma of roasting meat, get drunk on the wines. This is not a novel of events, so much as sensations. Yet all the characters are alive and convincing. Anyone who truly connects with food and its pleasures will be ravished. Makes Proust's madeleine seem poor fare.

Barbara Kesel weaves an intricate tale of mysticism and wonder as she reveals the adventure of Sam and and his friends. The story tells of a burnt out ex-solider and "Sam" his friend Roiya as the look to earn money after being realesed from the military. No sooner dose Sam get used to the quiet life that he recieves a Sigil( as is the theme with Crossgen Comics) and releases a powerful blast that levels a city. Trouble ensues as Sam, Roiya and his new found companions Jemirk and Zanni are hunted by the Saurins, a race of man-like lizards,the Human military, and a member of The First. The best part is when Sam takes part in a gladiator battle with a handfull of Raptor-esque creatures. This book is a must have for any comic reader or sci-fi lover.

Barbara Kesel has a tremendous ability to craft characters in an action-adventure story. Sigil has a truly original and compelling premise and lots of excitement.

Anfd the greater mystery will keep you coming back. Mark Waid's sequel to this book is equally fantastic.

The energy vortices or charkas are located within the cerebrospinal system and are the points of interaction between the spirit and the body. Each of the 7 main charkas is also connected to certain glands in the body and therefore has a role in the hormonal system.

The psychophysical energy dealt with here is electrochemical and operates through the life force (prana) that moves through the body along the nadi channels. The seven main chakras are all connected to the main nadi. By understanding this system one can cultivate a higher state of being.

This illuminating and comprehensive book includes the following chapters: 1. The Principles of Tantra Yoga, with a section on states of consciousness; 2. Kundalini Yoga; 3. The Essentials of the Chakras; 4. Chakras, Rebirth & Spirituality. The appendix consists of extracts from the Hindu scriptures on the various stages of Yoga.

The aforementioned Chapter 3 deals with each of the chakras in turn, providing a description of each, the psychological energies that operate in it, the shape, yantra and color of each chakra, its predominating sense aspects, its seed sound (bija), number of petals, residing deity and ruling planet. It was interesting to learn about the Soma Chakra, an unnumbered energy point also called Amirta or Indu, that resides within the 7th or Sahasrara chakra.

Very Confusing.......2002-04-30

Why Not?
This book is very confusing, it uses a lot of sanskrit words,
which just makes it impossible to comprehend.
The information is presented with no form, they're is no way to remember everything. The book has no life in it.
The book needs more pictures, and the use of english terms instead of sanskrit.
If you are trying to learn about chakras, and yoga, this isn't the book for you.
It is like a sanskrit dictionary.
The part that really bugs me, is that it says the book is about chakras, when most of it is about Yogi Meditation.

Expect for that, the book has nice pictures (but few) and very descriptive.

This book introduces the reader to the system of energy - nadi & chakra - in our body as described in the ancient Indian tantric scriptures. Each major chakra in our body/mind system is described in detail, including the powers of the chakra and accompamying sounds (beeja mantra) to harmonise the chakra. By following these, the reader can start working on their chakras and improve their wellbeing.

The author's accompanying audio tape is very useful to learn to pronounce the Chakra hormonising sounds (beeja mantra) correctly, which is very important.

I found this book and the audio tape a useful and a simple guide to meditate (reciting beeja mantra)on the chakras without undergoing hardship.

Basic Information for a Beginner.......1997-07-07

Having only recently entered the world of kundalini, this book gave me exactly the information I wanted. Its combination of visual and verbal descriptions help me improve concentration and achieve purer meditation. Rather than focusing on the sensational, Johari presents the philosophic significance of the chakras. This is the exact information that I needed to begin to progress. A companion tape, discovered accidentally, gives the bija sounds and further enhances the experience. Thumbs up

A visual treat for anyone who appreciates a bit of fantasy and/or enchantment in our living environments... Finally a book about a regular person's experience with Kundalini Awakening!

I found the first half of this book to be absolutely phenomenal. Just like Robert Monroe's Far Journeys, Penny Kelly relates her extraordinary experience from the perspective of an ordinary person having a life-altering experience that she didn't even know was possible. Penny Kelly was not a yoga or mediation practitioner; she didn't have a guru. She had a series of mind-blowing experiences and this book details her search for answers, and her journey to coming to terms with her new perceptions.

I did find the second half of the book to rely to much on accepted theories as well as the need for this evolutionary change to occur. I find this type of message overly dogmatic and firmly routed in religious beliefs that man (at least here on Earth) is basically evil or else driven by the Darwinian survival of the fittest that leads to a need to dominate everything. For someone who realizes that her beliefs influence her perception of reality, I wish that Ms. Kelly would have gone a step further to point out that everything is really okay.

All in all, I found this book tremendously helpful. It is well-written, and it is REAL. The trauma of fearing for one's sanity when not knowing what is happening is quite real and can lead people to shy away from such life-altering experiences. However, by reading how Ms. Kelly integrated the changes in her life, we, the readers, are left with the comfort of knowing that it is possible to move through the fear and unpleasant sensations to a place of peace and joy and fulfillment.

I wrote this book after struggling with kundalini for several years because I felt there had to be other people in the world who were struggling with these symptoms and might be helped if they knew what was really happening.

Many people believe that spirituality is some fine, fuzzy feeling of benevolent prayerfulness that makes everything in the world wonderful and blissful. While a full awakening does lead eventually to joy, the beginning of the road can be overwhelming in its difficulties - the appearance of clairvoyance, clairaudience, and other psychic gifts, out-of-body experiences, precognition, periods of overwhelming sensuality, strange pains in the feet, intense and explosive heating of the body, inability to concentrate, loss of interest in jobs and partners due to blossoming of your true interests or purpose, and sometimes the crumbling of your old life - all of which creates what is known as "spiritual emergency."

After 22 years of counseling those caught in these difficulties, and running a small center providing temporary housing for those whose lives fall apart, it is clear that spirituality transforms both awareness and action, and the burden of these gifts is that they must be taken back into everyday life... hence the old saying, "Before enlightenment - chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment - chop wood, carry water."

It is also clear that a true spiritual awakening is deeply connected to sexuality, and that few people mention this in their writings, partly because of the many taboos around sex, partly because it is so deeply personal, and partly because they have not had the full awakening and therefore don't know enough. Those who knew Gopi Krishna were aware of the potent sexual nature of his experiences, and those who have studied the writings of Charles Leadbetter, Lee Sannela MD, Hank Wesselman, Swami Muktananda, St. John of The Cross, and others makes it clear that although Western religions have tried to separate sexuality and spirituality, they are intimately linked.

Known in the East as "kundalini", and in the West as "grace", this book covers the full range of what may be encountered in "the full manifestation of grace" and makes it obvious that what has long been considered an outright gift of God is built-in to each of us and unfolds spontaneously. The result, says Jesuit priest Pierre deChardin, is a "move up the ladder of evolution, a biological super-creation."

THE EVOLVING HUMAN is a fascinating account of Penny Kelly's kundalini awakening in 1979. I love the way Kelly shares the full breadth and depth of her highly personal experience, and the way she describes the many varied effects of kundalini (such as heightened sensory and extra-sensory awareness). In sequential fashion, Kelly tells the story of how she first entered the realm of "I AM" knowingness, and how she gradually began to feel and appreciate the way her kundalini experience sensitized her to the world. Little by little, Kelly found herself learning to use the great power and wisdom conferred by kundalini, even as her rational mind continued to search for answers and a deep understanding of what had happened to her. In addition to providing a personal record of kundalini awakening, THE EVOLVING HUMAN also has a series of appendixes which provide a description of the stages of human spiritual evolution, and some useful pointers for analyzing dreams, and improving one's telepathic skills.

In one of the most fascinating parts of this book, Kelly describes how she lived through a period of time in which she felt herself living out two future paths along with her normal day-to-day life. My kundalini awakening took place in 1994, and many things Kelly describes in THE EVOLVING HUMAN remind me of experiences I've lived through. How wonderful it is to have this book at one's side, as reassurance that kundalini is a normal part of the process of human spiritual evolution. I give this book my highest recommendation for anyone who wishes to better understand how the kundalini experience transforms one's life.
