An old-fashioned tale of ordinary people thrown into the drama and danger of war, Hornet Flight is a rippingly good read. The time is 1941, and British bombers attacking Germany are being blown out of the sky in horrific numbers. How do the Nazis know they're coming? The answer is an infant technology called radar, and the Brits--with help from the Danish Resistance--must figure out how and where the German radar stations operate.
Follett, an old pro at World War II storytelling, vividly evokes the period, creating a sense not of historical re-creation but of urgently unfolding news. His cast of characters is memorable, including Harald Olufsen, a brainy 18-year-old pulled into the Resistance half against his will, and--typically for Follett--several central, well-drawn women. The plot does have some predictable elements: for example, from the time Harald first encounters a tiny wood-and-linen biplane called a Hornet Moth, half-rotted and stored away in a Danish barn, we know that it will heroically take to the skies. Then, when the very outcome of the war begins to turn on Harald getting a certain roll of film from Denmark to England, well... you can see where things are headed. But it's great fun to watch them develop, and Follett throws in just enough unexpected shocks to keep you off balance. Though it lacks the intensity of Eye of the Needle, Follett's finest and best-known book, Hornet Flight offers generous helpings of suspense and a climax that could hardly be more satisfying. --Nicholas H. Allison
Book Description
Ken Follett follows his bestsellers Jackdaws and Code to Zero with an extraordinary novel of the early days of World War II...
It is June 1941 and the war is not going well for England. Across the North Sea, eighteen-year-old Harald Olufsen takes a shortcut on the German-occupied Danish island of Sande and discovers an astonishing sight that will change the momentum of the war. He must get word to England-except that he has no way to get there. He has only an old derelict Hornet Moth biplane rusting away in a ruined church: a plane so decrepit that it is unlikely ever to get off the ground...even if Harald knew how to fly it.
Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing.......2007-05-23
Could not drag myself further than to page 70 - what a disappointment. His style of writing in this book is incredibly poor, it felt like reading a dime novel picked up at the gas station.
I loved all his previous books, but I am not sure if I will give his future books another try.
Good luck that I only checked it out at the library and did not buy it.
Flat like Denmark.......2007-02-07
I had liked very much a trip to Denmark last fall so I was looking forward to reading this book, set there. I was disappointed. It was a rehash of innumerable WW "thrillers" - although not very thrilling!
It's a great beach read!.......2006-09-18
Follett has written some really great books; "Eye of the Needle", "The Key to Rebecca", "Night Over Water"; that can be easily classed as a "beach read". How is a "beach read" different from an "airplane read" or a "little boy book"? Well, Tom Clancy does "little boy books" and Cormac McCarthy does "airplane reads". Follett's books - except for "The Pillars of the Earth" - are action books with an escapist bent that focuses the reader on learning about a key piece of the plot. In this book it is the Hornet Moth airplane powered by a Gypsy Moth engine - both made by de Haviland. The book's many twists and turns are accelerated by characters as diverse as sinister Nazi cops and strict Lutheran sect ministers along with a handful of bumbling Wehrmacht soldiers. Oh and do not forget the threat of the Gestapo always available to pull out a victims fingernails at the drop of a military secret.
As with all Follett's books, the good guys live in the end to not only escape but return to fight the Nazi's to the bitter end of the war.
Another Worthwhile Read.......2006-06-03
Another exciting, WWII fiction by Follett............Stays suspenseful throughout and keeps you pulling for good to prevail!
Hornet Flight - a great read for Follett fans . . ........2006-04-28
I enjoyed this read very much - a little twist on WWII facts - kept me interested - the only disappointment is the ending - as an aviator and an avionics technician it is totally implausible - but it doesn't take an engineering degree to be disappointed - common sense tells you that radar just does not work this way - too bad he didn't use 'window' as an outcome - it would have made perfect sense - other then that little disappointment, a great read.

Book Description
The Lord's Supper is the world in miniature; it has cosmic significance. Within it we find clues to the meaning of all creation and all history, to the nature of God and the nature of man, to the mystery of the world, which is Christ. It is not confined to the first day, for its power fills seven. Though the table stands at the center, its effects stretch out to the four corners of the earth.
Customer Reviews:
Come Hungry to the Lord's Table.......2005-11-11
Wow! This book was good. It was intended to be read as a meditation before each of the Lord's Suppers celebrated in the church; however, I couldn't put it down.
The purpose of the book is to eventually show how the celebration of the Lord's Supper leads to eschatological renewal and subsequently, the transformation of culture. This is the Epilogue of the book. The chapter (each about five pages or so) build up to this theme.
Following Frame and Poythress's multi-perspectival approach to the Eucharist. It is impossible to exhaust the meaning of the Supper in one proposition. Leithart doesn't mention this explicitly, but the point is there nonetheless. This is a crucial point to make. Without it, the book fails in its purpose.
Leithart examines the many facets of the Supper in biblical history, starting with Adam and ending in The New Jerusalem. Leithart looks for the feasting theme in Scripture (Adam delighting and communing with God in Paradise--The Second Adam inagurating the Feast that will bring about the New Paradise. Daniel and his friends refuse the King's food and so reconstitute the New Israel who will return from Captivity. The disciples eat the Supper as symbolic of the massive forgiveness that is about to come to the world via cross and resurrection; this forgiveness entailing the reversal of the Curse of the First Adam. In taking the Feast the disciples become the New Israel.).
As an example of Leithart's excellent writing, consider the value of being drunk with Yahweh's wine:
Zechariah 9:15, "The Lord of hosts will protect them,
and they shall devour, and tread down the sling stones,
and they shall drink and roar as if drunk with wine,
and be full like a bowl,
drenched like the corners of the altar.
"But the passage pictures Israel drunk with another kind of wine: filled with the wine of Yahweh's Spirit, Israel would be bold, wild, untamed, boisterous in battle. This suggests one dimension of the symbolism of wine in the Lord's Supper: it loosens our inhibitions so that we wil fight the Lord's battles in a kind of drunken frenzy. If this sounds impious, how much more Psalm 78:65, where the Divine Warrior himself is described as a mighty man overcome with wine? Yahweh fights like Samson, but far more ferociously than Samson: He fights like a drunken Samson!"
Exciting as this may be, we must face up to one aspect of the biblical witness. This is where Perspectivalism saves the day. 1 Corinthians 11 warns against treating the Lord's Supper casually, yet throughout the Old Testament (and hints in the New) we are to delight in the Lord through feasting. So, what gives? I will try to reconcile it in one statement (irony, I know. I previously warned against doing this):
We are to be contrite over our sins but at the same time we are to rejoice that our sins are forgiven and the New Age--the Messianic Age, the Age to Come--has broken into the present evil age. Christ is becoming King over the World! Yes, from one perspective we are to mourn over our sins but at the same time, we are to take heart that our sins are forgiven. Weeping may tarry the night, but joy comes in the morning!
start salivating.......2003-07-30
Let's say that you ran into a group of people who had formed a club dedicated to reading and publishing stories about King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Then let's say you asked how you would join a member and you were told that if you joined you would have to dedicate yourself to living like a noble person being brave and chivalrous, etc. Furthermore, they insisted on describing the good deeds you would do in this club in terms such as "jousting" and "dragon-slaying."
Now, if you joined that club, and the ceremony involved someone in charge touching your shoulder with a sword, just like men used to become knights in the Middle Ages, you would understand exactly what is going on. Somehow this group is viewing itself as a continuation of the Knights of the Round Table. You would be joining by being "knighted." The ceremony would have meaning from the stories and by means of the ceremony you would be making your own story a continuation of those stories.
Peter Leithart has written the best possible book on Eucharistic theology by refusing to write a book on Eucharistic theology (well, except for the closing essay, "The Way Things Really Ought to Be: Eucharist, Eschatology, and Culture," which is quite good in it's own right). Instead, he has written expositions of the stories in the Bible that involve the centrality of table fellowship with God. To read these sermonic expositions is to have one's "vision" (an overused metaphor according to Leithart) re-focused so that the familiar suddenly seems new. When you participate in the Lord's Supper, you are being fed the fruit of the Tree of Life, participating in the sacrifice of the altar as a priest, entering the land of milk and honey.... it goes on and on.
In other words, by reading this book you will be greatly helped in a process that is often disfigured in modern Evangelical life. Reading some of the many stories of the Bible that describe eating and drinking will immerse you in a new interpretation of what you are doing when you partake of the Lord's Supper. And, conversely, when you participate in the Lord's Supper, you will be continuing in what you have read so that it is reinforced for you as you embody what you have read. The Lord's Supper is truly the application, the sign and seal of the Gospel message. Peter's book shows how, by eating and drinking, you are continuing a culture that once involved Abraham eating and drinking with Melchizedek, Jesus starting a dinner club to which all sorts of undesirables were invited, and Paul publicly rebuking Peter for refusing to eat with uncircumcised Christians.
The final essay deserves special mention. Leithart argues that the emphasis on a "zoom lens" metaphor has deformed discussion of the Lord's Supper. By a "zoom lens" he refers to 1. an emphasis on the elements as "visible words" when the plain emphasis of the Bible is on eating and doing not on seeing, 2. a narrow focus on what happens "in" the elements, and 3. a narrow focus on what happens to an individual participant. Peter offers a "wide-angle" perspective that brings to our attention what happens in the congregation and to the congregation when they participate in the Lord's Supper. That essay alone is worth the price of the book. --Mark
Best little book I've read all year!!!.......2001-10-19
"Several years ago I got into the habit of trying to read one book on the topic of the Lord's Supper as part of my preparation for Communion. Since the church I attend only celebrates quarterly it hasn't been too difficult to dig up titles on the subject. Anyway, in preparing for Communion last Sunday I picked up Peter Leithart's 'Blessed are the hungry' which is mostly a collection of 3-5 page meditations. I give the book my highest recommendation. I would not hesitate to put it in the top 10 books I've ever read, not for its profundity, but for its perspective. You might not agree with everything he says, but I doubt that anyone could walk away from reading this little paperback book of meditations without having a perspective adjustment and a greater appreciation for God's revelation of Himself and the means of grace He has blessed."
Food for Thought.......2001-07-15
For those interested in the broader theological implications of the Lord's Supper, Blessed are the Hungry offers a feast of biblical insight. Leithart reminds us of the integral links between word and sacrament, kingdom and sacrament, and covenant and sacrament--links which have been largely ignored or denied among many evangelicals in the 20th and 21st centuries. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to reflect further on the Lord's Supper and the unity of Scripture.

The Best Vegetarian Cookbook I've found.......2005-02-07
This book (and all of Nadine Abensur's cookbooks) is a delight to read and cook from. It's not available in the States as far as I've seen, so grab it from Amazon and never look back. Nadine (as she is known in my family) is *the* person who made me realize that vegetarian cooking can be luxurious, flavorful, varied, fast and festive food. I have read and cooked from this book from cover to cover (along with her Cranks' Fast Food book) since I first discovered it in 2000. I have never loved a set of cookbooks so much. I use the Cranks' (so named for a famous vegetarian restaurant in London which she used to be the head of) Bible and her others practically every week.
Nadine always has an interesting story about how the recipe came about or how she uses it in her daily life; and at the end of the descriptions is often a number of suggestions for ways you could vary the dish or other things that you could serve with the dish to make a meal. This is VERY helpful. Here's an example from the end of the recipe for Jerusalem artichoke souffle:
"Serve with a generous green salad, some garlic croutons, and, if you are not too cheesed out, some cubes of any vegetarian blue cheese; if you are, a few sliced toasted hazelnuts scattered over the leaves will marry well with the subtle nuttiness of of Jerusalem artichokes and provide a contrast to all that comforting creaminess." She's a wonderful and caring author, really in love with vegetarian cooking.
Here are some of my favorite dishes that she makes:
"Carrots braised with cumin, saffron and garlic";
"Six Potato Salads- a) with celery and capers, b) with olive oil, c) with chives, lemon and garlic, d) with green beans and feta, e) with Moorish overtones, f) with watercress pesto"
"Celeraic soup with bouillabaise seasonings and rouille"
"Chickpea farinata" (a kind of thin, flat, savory crepe/cake made from chickpea flour that you can serve with drinks, or bring along on a picnic, or pack for work...)
"Grilled zucchini with greek yogurt and lemon".
She also has incredible desserts like "Chocolate tart with crystallized ginger"; Creme brulee; "Fig and rose water double-cream ice-cream."
***Give this book or any of Nadine Abensur's books a try: your friends and family will thank you!!***

Customer Reviews:
Good reference.......2000-04-10
If you're new to interior design or need a good book to keep as a reference - this is a good buy. Neatly laid out (in small print and double spaced), easy to understand with full coloured pictures, this book explains all the basics. For example, it explains the difference between contemporary and traditional design for each of the rooms highlighted and how to use colour and texture effectively. Function is also considered - as in the section on kitchens. Here 'Kitchens to eat in' and 'Kitchens to relax in' are two of the headings. In the section on bathrooms, there is information on 'Special needs' and 'Dual purpose' baths. The drawback is that if you're looking for new ideas, only a few are found as most of the rooms pictured are not practical, so ideas have to be picked from here and there. Also, the wide range of topics covered means that less depth of information is available although the most important points are mentioned. I also found that some of the pictures should have been taken at a wider angle to give a better effect of the whole room instead of just focusing on one aspect of design.

One of my favourite books.......2006-10-30
This is one of my favourite books on religious studies. I came across it by chance while taking a course on world religions. Initially, this work was presented as a doctrol thesis at Harvard University and eventually was published as a book. It explains the personification of Satan within Islam in detail. The introduction is excellent, with a brief reference to pre-islamic motif of Satan, or Diabolus (as known by Christian theology). The sound biography of Satan is followed by its image as viewed by the Islamic mystics. This constitutes the main body of the book. It ends with a separate chapter which summarizes the concept of Satan/Iblis/Diabolus as beautifully as the begening. I'm glad that I read this book, and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in looking at Satan from a different perspective.
A Beautifully Lucid and Poetic Exposition........1999-04-19
This is one of the most beautiful and profound academic books I have read in ten years of Religious Studies (and I am an Indologist). Sufism's interpretation of one of my favourite literary characters, Iblis or Satan, is rational, lucid, poetic and ultimately beautiful. I am moved by Iblis' perennial love for God and his hatred of Adam. The mythology, philosophy, and internal logic is both thought provoking and aestheticly quickening. Awn has sympathetically presented Sufism's enlightened theology on a figure much maligned by the mainstream Semitic traditions. He is to be very much congratulated!

Book Description
From late 1999 until recently the Welsh national newspaper ran a series of religious articles entitled "In the Pulpit" - written anonymously be a wise man known only as Caradoc. The column was immensely popular, and when it disappeared from the paper's pages, there was a public outcry. Caradoc, with his "wild, mad visions and his raw and clearly passionate relationship with God" attracted not only readers but also video and television producers keen to film this new seer of the South Wales coalfields. This book collects his best articles, introduced by Tom Davies, who recently managed to track him down for a rare interview.
