Book Description
"How Heavy Is The Mountain," an Alaskan "tour manual/novel," is based upon the author's adventures as a professional tour guide in Alaska and the Yukon Territory. It combines a literary novel format with factual, true-to-life "tours" of the many diverse regions of the land. "Mountain" is a palette of tones, styles and themes: within its pages a reader encounters narrative travel writing, miniature wildlife treatises, poetry, pointless drinking songs and highly personalized storytelling. Overall, the story is told with warmth, humor and an affection for its subjects: in particular, the great land that is Alaska.
Customer Reviews:
Jack London meets Jack Parr.......2005-09-16
This is one great delightful book, although a bit heavy to carry on your trip to Alaska. It is essential preplanning. It is not for those on cruise ships whose intent is to absorb everything Alaska in a four hour shore leave, for as the author states, "They are to be entertained, not educated." The format of this book with poems, myths, and a fast-paced narrative will leave most readers clamoring for more.
A "Truer" North.......2001-10-15
I love the author's creative, eclectic writing style: the mixture of story and poetry is great. Mr. Rundquist did extremely well in capturing true-to-life Alaskan characters. Having read many, many books that are "supposedly" about Alaska, I found "Mountain" to be free from the stereotypes that all too often run through such efforts. This Alaskan's critique: he done good.
Alaska Dreaming.......2001-07-03
Having just read this book I wanted to say that I found it to be a most engrossing and humorous tale of Alaska. The authors account of adventures in every part of that beautiful state was the perfect remedy to long, hot, smoggy California summer days. I highly recommend this book and have forwarded copies to friends as a highly entertaining novel from a talented new author.
Former Davis resident writes tour guide/novel about Alaska.......2001-03-17
Tim Rundquist, formerly of Davis, has just published his first book, 'How Heavy is The Mountain,' which he describes as an 'Alaskan tour manual/novel.' He worked in Alaska and the Yukon Territory, Canada for eight seasons as a professional tour guide, covering territory from Ketchikan to Prudhoe Bay, and nearly everything in between. The time spent in Alaska affected him not just professionally but creatively: 'My time in Alaska made such a deep impression on me that I had to write about it,' he said. 'Alaska is truly a land like no other.' The trouble was, Rundquist had some difficulty deciding what kind of book to write. 'The educator in me wanted to give a tour of the places that I came to know so well,' he said. 'The environmentalist in me wanted to highlight the special and fragile nature of the land. And my inner artist was inspired to express itself, to experiment, to create. The words just flowed.' So the result is a book that's not easy to categorize, but is well-written, informative and alternately (sometimes simultaneously) touching and hilarious. Perhaps Rundquist doesn't want to be confined to one genre. But finally it didn't matter: 'My goal, above all, is simply to place the book in the hands of people who will read and enjoy it. I wish I could be like Richard Brautigan and build a readership by walking around San Francisco, giving away copies for free.'
An Alaskan Classic.......2000-11-12
Rundquist does a brilliant job of bringing Alaska and its people to life in his new novel. The 'tour' segment on Denali National Park is some of the finest travel writing I have ever encountered. I loved the wildlife stories and his accounts of 'typical' small-town life in Alaska (Skagway, Talkeetna). I also laughed myself silly at his accounts of 'Top Twenty Tourist Questions' and the infamous 'Sour Toe Cocktail.' Highly recommended, especially for anyone interested in Alaska.

Book Description
The lesbian science-fiction classic Daughters of a Coral Dawn told the story of a group of pioneering women who disappeared from Earth and colonized the planet Maternas. But what of their sisters left behind? In the highly anticipated sequel, Katherine Forrest tells the story of a group of women called the Unity, who have vanished from society but are still living on earth. But Earth, repressive before the most accomplished and in-dispensable women disappeared, is now a hellish place ruled by the dictator Theo Zedera, known as Zed, and he is seeking the vanished women with ruthless determination. Among them is Africa Contrera, and as she struggles to build a world safe for women, she is haunted by her past, a past in which she and Zed were close friends, a past where she trusted him and shared the deadly knowledge he now uses to hunt her. Is there hope for this new hidden society of women? However resourceful they may be, can they withstand the savagery of a man who uses their own secrets against them? Just as she did 18 years ago, Katherine Forrest has created a brilliant and breathtaking saga of a divided society and the rebels courageous enough to withstand this brutal new world.
Katherine Forrest is also the author of the lesbian romantic classic Curious Wine as well as the groundbreaking Kate Delafield mystery series.

Barely a star.......2007-01-09
Not easy to read at all. I think you would have to be the author to understand the book......
Yum! Science fiction!.......2005-09-24
I loved this book! I did, do, did! I think I will probably be rereading this one. Correction: I think I will be bopping off to the store with a gift certificate I found and buying the first book. I love it. I'm a huge science fiction fan. And this has just enough to make me happy. It also has a character who reads almost closely like a librarian to me. And I love library type stuff, information architechture and organization. I like strong women. Okay and bad me, I like the conclusion regarding population decline, male infertility and female empowerment. I have a lot of male friends on-line and I don't have a problem with men but given the current political climate in the United States, it is nice to read something that well... subversively like the Da Vinci Code, could have elements of truth and explain things like why some religious zealots want to tell me what I can do with my female body. But that said, that aside, I like it!
IF you loved the first one, read this sequel :).......2004-01-19
To keep it pretty short and to the point, I'd say that if you loved "Daughters of a Coral Dawn," then you should read "Daughters of an Amber Noon." The sequel - as is so often the case - is not as good as the original ... but it's not bad, either, and if you finished Coral Dawn wanting to know what happens next, you should check this one out. :)
Note: The reader from South Carolina appears to have an odd view of what "lesbian" is, though she apparently is one herself. I would agree with the person who said that Amber Noon isn't as lesbian as I would've liked it to have been ... and point out to the reader from South Carolina that having elements such as "all the men were evil" and "all the men were murderers and rapists" does not make a book "more lesbian."
Lesbians generally don't hate men - I think you've confused us with married heterosexual women. ;)
Not as good as Coral Dawn - perfunctory and unrefined.......2003-03-04
To the reader who said it wasn't lesbian enough... Huh? Let's see... All the men were evil, completely bereft of any redeeming morality. When they weren't killing and torturing innocents, they were abusing women. All the men hated women. All men were murderers and rapists, and the only man they followed was the one who was more of a murderer than they are. The men who didn't follow him were actually even MORE misogynist than Zed.
All the women, on the other hand, were lesbians. All were exceptionally intelligent, moral, and upright, all displayed heroic virtue. All the lesbians were morally and socially superior to men. And all women, when freed from the oppression of men, choose to be lesbians, which is in itself presented as virtuous. And at the end, it is determined that lesbians ARE, in fact, superior to men, proven by the finest minds. Period.
Out of curiosity, how much more lesbian did you think it should be?
Hmmm. As a lesbian, I have to say - this comment is fairly typical of a certain faction. I think it's the standard gay/lesbian rejoinder, describing an affinity group as "they aren't active (gay, lesbian, feminist, etc.) enough" when you what you mean is, "I'm not getting laid after the meetings like I thought I would." And that's true - if you want the steamy sexual tension and romance of Coral Dawn, with the primary form of artistic expression being erotica and every character's sex life the most important piece of character development, you'll be disappointed. If you want character development at all, you'll be disappointed - she tried to tell two stories in the same word count as Coral Dawn, and did neither well.
I found it shallow and rushed, as if she had a certain word count to stay under and had to gloss over the details to make it all fit. The plot was transparent, though the twist at the end was unexpected. The social ideas posited are a ludicrous dystopian fantasy of necessary separatism, ham-handed at best. To be honest, I expected better from Forrest.
Never thought I wouldn't rave about a KVF book..........2003-02-03
After such a long wait for the sequel to Daughters of a Coral Dawn (which I love, including its flaws) I can't believe that this book was a disappointment.
It has Forrest's excellent prose, and her ability to create a good plot and really well-defined characters. All of her craft is there.
What's missing is heat. Fire, passion -- not in what the characters do and feel, but in the writing itself. The word craft seems so calculating at times that, to my amazement!, I found myself distracted from the story and not really caring about the outcome.
As another reviewer said, there is bit of a flaw in the plot, in that the women have such an easy time overcoming every technological barrier. Problem? So-and-so the brilliant this-or-that will find a solution and save the day. And we're told most of this, not shown it. And maybe that is the biggest flaw. The diary entries for the main narrators are very thin on dialogue and action. There's a lot of telling and not much showing.
KVF fans will want to read this book, but they should do so with their expectations set to something less than the KVF they expect. Maybe I'm wrong -- it's been nominated for a Lammy -- but for the life of me I can't see why.

My first.......1999-03-26
This was the first book I read by James Axler. It was just released at the time. After reading this book I was hooked. I went to used book stores and picked up all the rest of the series. It took me almost three years to find #7 Dectra Chain. I have continued to purchase these books as soon as they're released as well as the Eathblood Trilogy and the new Outlanders series. I only have one stumbling block and that is the book Bitter Fruit. I've tried to order it thru Amazon but they couldn't get it. I'm about up to that point in my reading and would really like to keep going in order. Anybody know where I can find that book? As for a review I find all the books in this series are really good and hard to put down.

uplifting to my spirit.......2006-01-24
This book was such an encouragement to me. It had approx 100 short stories that ministered to my heart. It is not something that should be read all at once but in bite size pieces
Some stories are inspiring, most lack eloquence........2002-04-04
I found this book to be somewhat lacking in inspiration and encouragement. However, some of the stories are heartwarming and teardropping. The problem with this book is that you have to be in the situation where you need to be inspired without double and where you are at a tough stage of your life. I'm a happy person and reading this book didn't teach me much. It is just a hobbily read. I would recommend that you think of your situation before you buy this book.
Touching, truly inspirational.......1999-11-23
I really enjoyed reading the touching stories on this book, it really touches your spirit in many ways. I laughed, and cried and reflected on a all of the stories this book offers. If anyone is looking for a book that will move your soul in more ways than one, then this is the book for you!
After an illness - I found this book a comfort........1999-06-01

Book Description
Imaginative, innovative, and illustrated with some of the most striking images of the Middle Ages, this book is a "history of death in miniature" as told in hundreds of tiny pictures produced by fourteenth-century manuscript illuminator, Pierre Remiet, whose specialty was the representation of death, old age, and decay. Michael Camille explores the artist`s work, shedding light on medieval perceptions of death, its fascination with the macabre, and the relationship between mortality and image-making itself.

Book Description
The holding of prisoners of war has always been both a political and a military enterprise, yet the military prisons of the Civil War, which held more than four hundred thousand soldiers and caused the deaths of fifty-six thousand men, have been nearly forgotten. Now Lonnie R. Speer has brought to life the least-known men in the great struggle between the Union and the Confederacy, using their own words and observations as they endured a true “hell on earth.” Drawing on scores of previously unpublished firsthand accounts, Portals to Hell presents the prisoners’ experiences in great detail and from an impartial perspective. The first comprehensive study of all major prisons of both the North and the South, this chronicle analyzes the many complexities of the relationships among prisoners, guards, commandants, and government leaders.

Wonderful book.......2007-03-25
I never knew about these camps. They don't teach you these things in school. Covers a lot of information about many camps. I now will be getting books on some of the camps mentioned in this book.
Customer Reviews:
"THE" book on Civil War Prisons........2005-01-22
Factually, this book hits the mark. The author is able to describe events so the reader can form a mental picture of what conditions in a civil war prison must have been like. It is apparent that the author has done his homework and researched his material. The ultimate compliment is in "who" published this excellent work. If anyone knows the scrutiny that Stackpole Publishing and Will Davis places on a work such as this, then one must realize that the information contained within is based on factual material that is easily verified. A must for any Civil War buff.
His story of the Civil War........2004-02-29
This is an encyclopedia of questionable "facts" regarding the military prisons of the era. The author may very well have used sources from the period but as a Vietnam vet, I know that "war stories" must be taken with a grain of salt.
AN INTERESTING BUT FLAWED BOOK.......2003-06-17
This book took on the monumental task of looking at every Civil War prison. Unfortunately, it fell victim to that very attempt. By trying to do too much, it failed to show the true context in which these prisons existed. While even the best of these camps were terrible places, they were terrible for everyone. The guards lived in the same filth and a good number of them also died. This book tends to label someone and then move on. The book, Unlikely Allies, by Dale Fetzer goes into much more detail about Ft. Delaware and shows the commander to have been a much more complex character. Elmira, Deathcamp of the North shows the intrinsic horror of the camps that is not shown in this more slanted approach. Things were bad enough without taking them out of context. The smallpox epidemic that killed nearly one quarter of theose who died at Ft. Delaware, ravaged the entire mid Atlantic region. The prisoners, however, had no place to run. The epidemic stopped when the commander had the prisoners and guards vaccinated. The food was terrible but so was the food the troops had in the field. Thumb screws were a nasty, but typical, military punishment. I am sure there were atrocities and some of them are in the book but this book does use primary sources for some acts where only one soldier seems to have ever reported the event. It was worth reading and the pictures are good but it throws truth, myth, legend and downright fabrication together as if it were the gospel. Read with care.
THE MOST COMPLETE PRISON STUDY AVAILABLE.......2003-05-07
While many true historians and Civil War experts such as
Jeffry D. Wert, William C. Davis, and Chris Fonvielle
praise Portals to Hell, amazingly in this day and age
there are still those who want to argue about the
conditions of the Civil War's prisons and try to
revise history. The previous reviewer wants to
dismiss everything because of a minor discrepancy.
The fact is Fort Delaware is located in the river just
above the mouth of the bay and conditions today can't
realistically be compared to conditions of nearly 140
years ago. The site doesn't look the same and Speer
specifically pointed that out in the Epilogue. The
book is very well documented and detailed. If
conditions at Ft. Delaware have been unduly
exaggerated over the years, then why did so many
Confederates dread being at this prison more than
any other Union prison, leave documentation about
the wretched conditions in their journals and diaries
that remained unpublished until many years after
their deaths, and why do we have other documentation
that show that at least 2,460 POWs died there and
perhaps as many as 2,925? In fact, why was there
nearly 26,000 documented deaths in the Northern
prisons and another 30,000 in the Southern prisons
if conditions have been so exaggerated? Even a recent
book about this particular prison, written by the fort's
tourist guides, fail to point out the total death rate as
if to revise the prison's history. The revisionists are all
around us! They still exist!
As Civil War author and historian Jeffry D. Wert wrote,"From the research to the writing, Portals to Hell is good history."
I agree and I highly recommend the book!
History or Fiction.......2002-10-14
A college professor once told us that history is 80% fiction and is a function of the agenda of either the writer or his sources. Is that the case here? I found the book very interesting but in the areas I am familiar with, far from reality. For example, I live near Fort Delaware and it is not in the middle of Delaware Bay. It is in the middle of the Delaware River. You would not need to be an expert swimmer to reach either the Pennsylvania or New Jersey shore as suggested in the book. An escapee would not have to "float for hours on the waves using the lights of Delaware City" to guide him. He could have easily floated in the gentle current the nine tenths of a mile to shore. He also used questionable sources. He uses an old tale from a former prisoner about a guard who took a hundred or more prisoners to a remote area and made them strip. Until the Corps of Engineers began to dump the sludge dredged from the shiping channel on the north end of the island after the war, the island was only about seventy acres and had buildings everywhere. Even though he says the prison is on an island, he has a prisoner at the end of the war being forced to walk fourteen miles to the nearest town to get a train because the evil guards wouldn't help him. The nearest town is again Delaware City and it is nine tenths of a mile across the river. It was a southern city and the gracious people would have been happy to help. The author also places Ft. Miflin, south of Phila, in the middle of the river. It is not. At the time it had a narrow channel between it and the mainland which is now gone. Of the thousands of prisoners at Ft. Delaware, his sources appear to only be those who had something to gain by their more colorful stories. They were selling books. I found so many inconsistencies in the areas I was familiar with that I was very skeptical about the remainder. After reading a subsequent review, I thought that I would clarify a few points. I did not go into everything originally to keep the review to one point. Read all history with care. The book, however, is accurate in showing that Ft. Delaware was a miserable place to be. In the summer, it is a hot, humid, terrible place. In the winter, with the winds whipping up from the bay, life would again be intolerable. This book is an anthology of all the civil war prison camps. As such, there are both time and space constraints. All history is a story and must be read with some skepticism. I thought the reviewers before me were far too enthusiastic about this book's accuracy. This particular book, based upon other books and research, does lean more to the sensational. Some of the primary sources did have axes to grind, particularly Mr. Rivenbark. Besides writing a book, Rivenbark lectured after the war. His stories got more "interesting" as time passed. This book is not balanced but it was interesting and a basic start for further reading on a particular prison.

most underated series ever.......2001-07-22
i loved this whole series, and the portals of hell was great too. i especially love how caughan covers every side whether it's the american side, the japanese side, the german side or the jewish concentration camps. it's something that's rarely done. it was perfect.
World War Two in all its pain and glory.......1999-10-14
As a student of history, I found Mr. Vaughans depiction of the "great war" to be very real and compelling. He brings out the horror and complete evil of the times. Once you begin to understand Mr. Vaughan's true feelings of the American experience in the war, then and only then will you understand the impact it had and still has to this day on the American psyche. Mr. Vaughan, please keep up the great work!!

Outposts of Hell or Portals to Heaven is a no-holds-barred book that tells the truth about the teachings and actions of some Evangelists and Christian entertainers that have led the Body of Christ to fall away from the teachings of Jesus. As a result of these teachings, some Christian homes have become more like outposts of Hell than portals to Heaven. This book calls Christians to hold those accountable whose actions have brought shame upon Christianity and the cause of Christ, and will serve as a clarion call to Christians everywhere to "follow the true path" and be the Christians we claim to be. This book challenges you to search the Scriptures and make sure that what is being taught to you is actually the truth and will help to prepare Christians for the spiritual warfare needed to defeat Satan, and follow the true path of Christianity.

Hear that trumpet? .......2006-08-13
In Outposts of Hell or Portals to Heaven, Tom Ward makes a very strong call for Christians to stand up for their beliefs and bring Christ back into Christianity. He is unafraid to broach very controversial topics and stand firm on what he believes to be true Christian worship and stewardship. This no-holds-barred look at modern-day religion is certain to make readers take a closer look at their stance on spirituality.
A Very Challenging Read.......2006-05-29
Author Tom Ward pulls no punches in what he believes American Christianity is in "Outposts of Hell or Portals to Heaven." Tom asks the tough questions and regrettably for many who claim they are Christians, the answers are damaging.
Ward writes a book that may, at first, look like it is directed at those who are casual believers, but there is plenty of fault to go around for the rest of us who's faith is more active and deep. Problems in American congregations are identified but even more, Mr. Ward offers what he believes are the root causes and the cures for those causes.
"Outposts of Hell or Portals to Heaven" is crafted in such a way as to make for easy reading yet each word is profound in its directness--no wasted words or fluff here to get in the way of the message. The value of this book is in the way it causes the reader to not only reflect on their own church body, but at themselves as well--offering an examination of conscience of sorts.
"Outposts" is tough love medicine for those Christians who think their "brand" of faith is healthy. It offers a chance to look at things as Jesus, himself, might. In our own thinking, we may consider church scandals and pulpit failures as our biggest liabilities, but Tom Ward helps guide the reader into a more personal look at some of the less conspicuous problems such as parental responsibility, hypocrisy, women's dress codes, church attendance, and having a service that is "in order"--things that should indeed be corrected in any church where they are found to be out of control.
You may not agree with everything Tom Ward points out, but you will acknowledge much of his perspective is right on target.

information not found elsewhere .......2006-04-09
Tom Ward's book The Enemy Within contains tons of information about the Gay lifestyle. Using his own experience he shows that being homosexual is in fact a choice that in many cases is condoned or accepted by society as just being genetically different. Mr Ward bursts this myth with facts and reasonable deductions backed up by Bible scriptures. This book is well written and researched. The Enemy Within will show homosexuals wanting out of that lifestyle how to enlist help with their struggles. Homosexuality and God has been a hot topic for the last several years and Tom Ward offers friends and relatives information not found elsewhere to help them understand what homosexuality is really about.

The Truth Revealed.......2006-03-06
Outposts of Hell or Portals to Heaven written by Tom Ward, is an honestly written testimonial that brings a reasonable person to a reality about today's winds of doctrine. Mr. Ward's book exemplifies spiritual warfare and the true faith of Christianity. The boldness and fortitude of his writing is parallel with scripture. Mr. Ward's book screams validity for the Christian faith. A must read to resurrect the truth about the Body of Christ. Robert Meacham- author "Mind's Diary"
Excellent read.......2006-02-21
Tom Ward has given the Christian community a very strong view of the Bibles truths in his book,"Outposts of Hell or Portals to Heaven." He tells of his firm beliefs and experiences where so called "christian believer's" have let the Word of God go slack in their teachings and reflections. How not being knowledgable to God's commands has brought about destruction to todays society. It is not a new thing which is happening in society, but something in which we, as devoted Christian's, should look at. We have let to many things go under the bridge of our religious faith and now is the time for the true Christian Believers to take a stand for what we believe. Tom Ward has done this! Straight to the point and full of Biblical truths, Tom's book will open your eyes to new understandings of how we can bring help to a lost world.
