    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-07-23

These are retold fairy tales, but not the funny ones. Still, by exploring the tragedy, warmth, and soulfulness of these tales, deeply talented authors delve into the soul and try to find comfort int hese new flavors of fairy tales.

5 out of 5 stars Fairy tales are not just for children.......2003-02-23

This anthology is one of the most emotionally wrenching and satisfying collections of stories that I've read-not just from fantasy authors, but from anyone. Dealing with the darker aspects of childhood, including abuse and alienation, the stories and poetry are full of depth and transformation; magic, despair, and ultimately hope. Some exceptional stories are "The Armless Maiden" by Midori Snyder, "The Juniper Tree" by Peter Straub, "The Lion and the Lark" by Patricia McKillip, "The Lily and the Weaver's Heart" by Nancy Etchemendy, "In the House of My Enemy" by Charles De Lint, and "In the Night Country" by Ellen Steiber. The poems are all beautiful. This book is definitely on my desert island list.

    5 out of 5 stars Dead-serious fairy tales.......2001-11-06

I love adult fairy tales, but it seems that all too often, writers pump up the sex and violence to render the tales "adult", rather than more deeply exploring the human emotional dramas in the stories. Maybe that's why I love _The Armless Maiden_. The tales and poems here do include sex and violence, yes, but at their heart is the triumph of the human spirit.

If we look carefully at fairy tales, many of them are actually about what we would now call child abuse. Cinderella was neglected. Handel and Gretel were abandoned. Donkeyskin suffered incest. And there are so many more. And in most of the stories, the protagonist rises above the situation somehow--in the old versions, usually by gaining fortune and position. In the stories in _The Armless Maiden_, the triumph is more often psychological. I read once--I think it was in a book by Marina Warner--that the essential theme of the fairy tale is transformation. In these stories, we see victims transformed into survivors.

These are serious fairy tales for our times, and I recommend the book both to abuse survivors and to those who did not suffer abuse (trust me, everyone knows someone who did). My personal favorite contributions are Emma Bull's poem about Cinderella's stepsister regretting the friendship they never had, and Ellen Kushner's "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep", the story of a young girl in the custody of a cold-hearted guardian, and haunted by the ghost of the woman's unhappy daughter.

5 out of 5 stars Why is this book out of print?.......2000-07-10

    This is a short review.

Actually, this is not a review atall, although I should say it, shortly and to the point: The ArmlessMaiden is a gorgeous anthology, one of the best I've ever read.

This is just a message to people who might stumble upon it in a bookstore or library.

    The message is: read it.

    You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for everyone, but especially survivors of abuse........1999-01-13

This book has a myriad of short stories, poems, & essays about survivors of child abuse. They are all worked around fairy-tale themes but not Disneyified: no handsome prince comes to rescue a child; instead, these children escape through their own courage & perseverance. An AMAZING book. A shame it is out of print--but I've seen copies used & in remainder bins at bookstores so do yourself a favor & keep looking! This book will make you shudder, weep, cringe, but ultimately leaves you w/a feeling of hope. All the pieces are good, but standouts include Terri Windling's, Charles De Lint's, Ellen Steiber's, & Munro Sickafoose's. Another wonderful aspect is that Windling ignores genre boundaries & hence you see authors such as Sharon Olds & Anne Sexton represented as well. Highly recommended!

    Book Description

Primitive literacy is redundant. Mere words are expelled. We inaugurate a world of pure presence. The mind, that intrudes itself between ourselves and those memories too terrible to know, must keep us moving beyond the grasp of their claw. To control the flow, it will be necessary that political order be imposed always temporarily. The state shall enjoy direct, creative access to the real.

It's the end of the twenty-third century. Earth has violently self-destructed. Venusia, an experimental off-world colony, survives under the enlightened totalitarianism of the Princeps Crittendon regime. Using industrialized narcotics, holographic entertainment, and memory control, Crittendon has turned Venusia into a self-sustaining system of relative historical inertia. But when mild-mannered junk dealer Rogers Collectibles finds a book about early Venusian history, the colony -- once fully immersed in the present -- begins losing its grip on the real. With his Reality-V girlfriend Martha Dobbs, neuroscop operator Sylvia Yang, his midget friend Niftus Norrington, and a sentient plant, Rogers wages a war to alter the shape of spacetime, and in the process, revisions the whole human (and vegetable) condition.

Forget cyber punk, nano-tech, and that tired victorian future...whatever. Venusia is hard core! A story that can't be condensed and described, you have to experience it. This is truly a messed up pyschedelic trip through speculative fiction, a post modern rollercoaster ride that never feels academic. The thrills of six flags combined with the fantasy and attention to detail of old school disneyland all in a portable, easy to carry, compressed universe called a book. Do you love PKD and Delany? Do you crave dense, mind expanding, tongue twisting, mushroom chewing meditations on the limits of the imagination? Then this is your thang. Dr. Bloodmoney meets Palmer Eldritch meets Dreams in the Witch House meets Perdido Street Station meets the Secret Life of Plants. Yeah, I said it, The Secret Life of Plants. Don't be fooled by the high falutin publisher and the text-book like cover, this is pulp at its best.

Von Schlegell provides a context for some of the deepest tryps I've ever taken. A good place to reflect on all those things that we should be asking but don't. Don't be a busy dude, let it take you on that tryp.

5 out of 5 stars William Blake meets Philip K. Dick.......2005-10-30

Venusia is the first book I've ever read that takes time travel to its logical conclusions, where the coming undone of the fabric of reality is not just a threat but a given from the first page. It is the most complicated narrative meditation on reality and the imagination I expect I will ever encounter. Reading it is something like walking through one of Salvador Dali's paintings after another.

It takes place in a post-literate society where daily flower feedings are mandated by law and scanner helmets allow both doctors and police to enter people's minds and alter them. Its unlikely hero is an antiquities dealer on the verge of the biggest deal of his career who finds himself falling in love with a reality-TV journalist.

This book is fully realized, completely original, deeply plotted and compulsively readable. I would recommend it to anyone who liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or the Hitchhiker's Guide.

        5 out of 5 stars Lovely Lady.......2006-06-14

I had the good fortune of meeting and spending time with this lovely lady. At 92 she works harder than anyone I know, traveling around the world alone, holding seminars, giving talks continuously, answering emails, letters, phone messages and giving lectures at a pace that would make most grown men swagger. They never end.

At 92 she had just come from Southern California where she was the feature speaker over a weekend Conference followed by Seminars in Chicago and in four days I saw her she give several evening lectures to large groups, held private sessions every afternoon for select groups followed by evening dinners and entertainment and she never rested until late (around 11:00pm) in the evening. Of course her mother lived to be 107.

The only things she did to rejuvenate was an afternoon of Tai Chi. I was absolutely dumbfounded. We dropped her off enroute to do the same in New York. After which she was on her way back to Germany to teach a large group of men in her work over a several week period...

She is in continous demand for her works and her intimate experiences. It was Sai himself that asked Phyllis to write this work entitle the "Ultimate Experience", to simply tell her story. She didn't write it for glory but to serve him.

She continues to write and work and serve. In spite of the many obstacles that are demonstrated here in this biography at a much younger age she keeps on, because of her incredible commitment and vast education in this subject. She continues to be an inspiration, not only to followers of Sai Baba but to everyone she meets. I watched first hand. There is not a soul that met her that wasn't touched and inspired deeply. I was! For the person that she is. I'm pretty tough to impress honestly; but she's quite an inspiration.

Her work on the Cutting the Ties that Bind will hold a place in the esoteric and psychological work for a long, long time. Her writings literally work miracles on peoples lives. This is simply a small contribution to her story.

Much in the realm of the Celestine Prophecy if you can get past awkward writing; it is a great story for seekers. Now, will someone write a book that is a compelling story AND brilliantly written in this genre ?

This book is outstanding. The recipes are all tried-and-true, comparatively easy to make, and absolutely wonderful. And each is preceded by a warm, interesting little anecdote -- which a friend once described as "proof that somebody actually ate this". I really love this book, and cannot sufficiently recommend it. (I have all the cookbooks written by this author, and strongly recommend them, as well.)

Friends comfort us in troubled times and help us celebrate the good times. Friendships provide precious memories that can be stitched into a quilt. Having gathered over 20 years of quilting friends, we decided to celebrate them with this book, a treasury of friendship quilts.

We designed big quilts, small quilts, bright quilts, muted quilts, and yes, even a "teach a friend to quilt" quilt. We suggest scrap and block exchanges to share with groups of friends. Sprinkled throughout are quotes about friends and friendships that might just prompt a memory that in turn will inspire a quilt for a treasured friend.

Offering an assortment of styles and skill levels, this group of 20 quilts and wall hangings is a collections you will come back to again and again. Included are several quick and easy small projects that are perfect for last-minute gifts.

As Billie Holiday said, "If I don't have friends, I ain't got nothing." Celebrate your friends--make a quilt!

                  Book Description

This abundantly illustrated volume arises out of the painstaking work of the Georgia Quilt Project, the most authoritative survey of quilts and quiltmakers ever undertaken in the state. Georgia Quilts showcases the diversity of quilting materials, methods, and patterns used in the state from the nineteenth century to the present and reveals how quilts serve as conduits of history and culture. From plain bed coverings of fabric scraps to exquisitely wrought pieces made for the "best bed," each of the 120 examples featured in the book tells its own story of abundance or want, peace or war, tradition or novelty.

Instead of the usual chronological approach taken by many quilt histories, Georgia Quilts looks at a number of themes through which the common story of the state, its people, and its quilting legacy can be told. Chapters follow various threads of the craft, including Civil War-era quilts, the cotton economy, quilting groups, feed sack quilts, everyday and fine-craft quilts, and special-occasion quilts, including those made as gifts to honor athletes at the 1996 Olympic games. The volume's contributors have a deep knowledge of, and strong personal ties to, quilt history and quiltmaking in Georgia.

The Georgia Quilt Project, beginning in 1990, has documented more than 10,000 quilts. Volunteers conducted dozens of Quilt History Days around the state, interviewing quilt owners and examining and photographing their quilts. The 120 quilts included in this book have been chosen from the thousands seen by the Project. Some are notable for their beauty, rarity, or workmanship; others are simple, functional objects that have been cherished for their ties to family history. All have their own stories to tell about family, community, and the desire to leave something tangible behind.

                  2 out of 5 stars Very 20th Century.......2007-08-03

I'm interested in Vintage quilts, and State Quilt Study Groups publications are a great place to become acquainted with regional quilt patterns and aesthetics prior to 1900. Georgia Quilts is a bit disappointing compared to some other State Quilt books. Relatively few quilts prior to 1900, although some are superb; a Circular Saw that looks positively lethal, and a breathtakingly beautiful Lotus Blossom. Most State Quilt books are organized chronologically, this one is not, so there may be more pre-1900 quilts than I think. There's a lot of space devoted to non-quilting topics- including a chapter on King Cotton, which was interesting, and - not un-associated with quilts. Oh, two of Harriet Powers' fabulous quilts are pictured.

Fellow quilters understand; its the photos that make or break a book about quilts, and these photos are fabulous. The text is lively and informative and makes me wish to see another exhibit of historic quilts!

4 out of 5 stars An Explosion of New Quilts from the South.......2007-01-23

I am still poring over this beautifully formatted and photographed book, and I've owned it for six weeks. It is a joy to behold and an important addition to current knowledge of textile and quilt history.

It is notable for the new quilts it brings to light and for the sheer number of quilts from the various eras in Georgia's long history. Clearly the quilt search that produced it was far-reaching, ambitious.

GEORGIA QUILTS also should interest quilt historians for the light it throws on quilts of the Deep South. Those seeking trends or commonality of patterns, textiles, quilting traditions, and other elements of the quilter's art now have another important resource.

In short, it is a beautiful book, filled with well-rendered full-page photographs of quilts not previously seen in print, with vintage photographs to provide context. Buy it for the quilts you will see, if for no other reason. It cannot fail to please.

The decision to organize the quilts by something more meaningful than chronology suggests the complexity of the body of quilts and offers options for deeper exploration of trends and issues. In this choice, the editors have the fine KANSAS QUILTS as precedent. A problem associated with such a decision, of course, is a possible lack of consistency in the quality of treatment and approach to the items studied.

GEORGIA QUILTS shows some of the problematic effects of this approach. For instance, some writers speculate more freely than others. When addressing the appearance of a blue-green color popular sometime around or just after the Civil War, the writer states the color visible today is "probably" the result of a fabric fade from a two-step home dye process. Yet throughout the book, this identical color appears in post-Civil War quilts in combination with cheddar and oxblood. The consistency raises questions that need addressing, for this color offers clues for dating and placing historical quilts of unknown provenance. Hardly novel to Georgia, it is seen throughout the Mid- and Deep South in the same general hue. One wonders what a search of cotton mill inventories in the period might have revealed.

Yet, while fewer unsupported generalizations would improve the book, to a large extent, the problem is characteristic of state quilt books because of the number of items that require consideration in a relatively short space. Perhaps all one might ask of such books is a representative sampling, accompanied by an effort at interpretation that will point the direction for future scholarship. In this, GEORGIA QUILTS succeeds.

And if only for the sheer array of quilts, well photographed and well displayed, and the complementary photographs from the Vanishing Georgia collection of the Georgia Historical archives, it deserves a place in the library of everyone interested in American quilts, American history, Southern culture and arts, or the history of quiltmaking.

Here you will find 'Possum quilts, a Circular Saw to beat all Circular Saw quilts, and enough lively examples of the quilter's art to suggest the character of Georgia's culture over time and to give abiding pleasure.

The editors are to be commended on their inclusion of many quilts heretofore not seen in regional quilt books and on their organizational decision. The varied treatments, including solid chapters on feedsack quilts, African-American quilts, and "King Cotton" are informative and introduce either new perspectives or focus earlier ones more sharply. The two chapters on early quilts present fine new examples, brilliantly photographed, and a range sometimes not found.

GEORGIA QUILTS is an excellent addition to the study of Southern culture and American quilt history in general. It is a must-own.

I recommend following this book with Nancilu Burdick's LEGACY: THE QUILTS OF TALULA BOTTOMS. Bottoms was a Georgian who experienced the Battle of Atlanta and lived into a new century, quilting all the while. Though like many Scots-Irish Southerners after the Civil War, her family eventually moved to west--in her case, to Limestone County, Alabama--for better farming land, Bottoms remained a Georgian in her heart and outlook. Her story might well have been a chapter in GEORGIA QUILTS.

4 out of 5 stars A concept book with teaching aspects.......2007-03-16

An interesting book for teachers, this book gives some very interesting ideas for quilting with classes and how Emmel went about it. There are few actual patterns simply because the students will guide the design and make-up of the quilt through ability, numbers and interest. Emmel also provides teachers with ideas for blending the project into a number of subject areas (art, science, maths..) My biggest beef would be it is US-centric with some patterns not really mapping to an Australian society. I love the maths/symmetry quilt.

From Albania to Zimbabwe, every nation of the world is represented in Canada's Quilt of Belonging. Each block symbolizes one country and was created by someone originally from that place. This unique and highly visual book highlights dozens of individual blocks and tells the fascinating stories of the groups they represent. Each block showcases beautiful craftwork: some are embroidered, some knitted; others are embellished with beads, butterfly wings, porcupine quills, and many other materials. Placing the quilt within a larger cultural context, the book explores the history of quilting and describes how scraps of fabric have long been used to tell stories and remember the past.

This is not your typical do-it-yourself guide. I picked up this book because we're about to undertake a big remodeling project and every magazine or fix-it guide I read just bores me to tears. I wanted something helpful, but also fun, and I got it! This book is more like a journal with personal reflections and heartfelt advice, plus tons of great tips for fixing up your home.

Whether you're a renter or a homeowner, doing it yourself or hiring contractors, just starting out or making improvements on an old home, all the various decorating and remodeling choices can be overwhelming. Should you go with hardwood, tile, or carpet? Wallpaper or paint? Everything has pros and cons and everyone you talk to has a different opinion. But this book gives you the kind of straight-forward, honest advice you'd get if you had a cousin who's a contractor. Best of all, it's not a dry DIY guide, but a really fun-to-read book chock full of personal stories and interesting details, as if that cousin happened to be your favorite person to gab with all night long.

If you've read any of Julia Bourland's other Go-Girl Guides, you know that she's an expert on steering women through various stages of their lives. So if you're ready to settle down and "nest," you'll find lots of ideas and inspiration in this book.

Adobe is trying to stay ahead of the technology curve by making sure that Photoshop 6 has all of the features that a Web graphics designer needs, and then some. In fact, the combination of Photoshop 6 and its sister application ImageReady makes for a powerful Web-graphics design suite, and Photoshop 6 Web Magic shows how to get the most from it.

A quick introduction leads into 21 tutorials for doing specific Web-oriented tasks in Photoshop. In projects 3 through 5, for example, seamless tiles and textures are created from scratch, and used as background elements on Web pages. Other projects deal with creating elements that are designed to be animated, such as rollovers, warping text, and pop-ups. Some projects are oriented toward the newer Photoshop user, while others are more geared toward the Web designer, but all offer useful tips and techniques.

The sections on ImageReady and JavaScript include important, real-world information about the various file formats--and the advantages and tradeoffs of each--plus clear functional examples of common JavaScript code that every Web developer should know. Handsomely produced, each page is in color and two-column format, and the book lies flat on your desk. Graphics and screen shots accompany every step of every project, and the author writes in a clear, concise style. The accompanying CD-ROM includes all of the project files and related material, as well as some bonus material: additional patterns, shapes, brushes, and styles. There are also numerous JavaScript examples.

Photoshop 6 Web Magic provides valuable examples and sparks countless ideas. If you use or are planning on using Photoshop and ImageReady to create Web graphics, the tutorials in this book are fun, educational, and inspiring. --Mike Caputo

                          5 out of 5 stars Oldie but a Goodie!.......2004-05-30

I picked up this title for a song - probably because it's old. But if I had to pay full retail it would still be worth every penny! I can't believe how easy it is to create these animations in Foster's book. I'm already making cool buttons and graphics for my web site based on the examples in this book. I suggest you get a copy and learn these easy animations and tricks taught in this great book. NOW!!

                          5 out of 5 stars Now I understand more.......2002-01-31

I wish to tell you that I have been using Photoshop 5.5 for a long time now and just updated to Photoshop 6. I was so lost! I love the three dimension styles that it has and this book shows me very well. I also love the many animations and even more information about making the web graphics. If you have just updated to Photoshop 6.0 and need to understand the features and tools, then I recommend this book to you! (Sorry for my bad English!) ~ Sinclaire

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2001-11-26

This book is essentially a book on layer styles. 90% of the lessons are BASED almost entirely on slapping on a layer style. Rarely does the author show you how to make a style, most of the time you are instructed to use a default, or worse use one from the CD-ROM -this isn't learning!!

The book is well formatted and look's good on a coffee table. The cover is nice, the layout is nice. But they book's content is very shallow. The first 4-5 lessons were pretty good in my opinion but after that the book became very redundant. Every lesson starts with applying a style to slightly different shape, and ends with creating a SLIGHTLY different gif animation in Image Ready. Any half intelligent human would only need 1/4 of this examples. Do you really need someone to show you how to animate a blue sailboat across the screen, then follow that up with how to animate a green sailboat, then a yellow one. Hey Mr. Foster what happens if I'm ever am confronted with a purple sailboat, I won't know what to do?! There was no sailboat lesson really, but my point is the book teaches the same concepts over and over and over. 15 of the 21 lessons are slight variations of the exact same concept.

The quality of the end result in most cases is also fairly low. Gif animations are ugly and annoying enough usually, but if you use the authors examples... well, please don't. Examples include, the old text 'Sale' in an exploding star shape animated to fly at the viewer; animations of text dripping and twisting and bending and twirling (all different lessons of course), and looping over and over again.

There seem to be 2 types of Photoshop users, those who want to press a button and be immediately sastisfied with an instant 'magic' result, and those who want to understand how the program really works. I would like to think that users with experience (which is this book's target) would not fall into the instant result category, but based on the number of 5 star reviews of this book, this is not the case. I suspect some of these reviewers haven't finished the book, I liked the book when I was on chapter 4.

The book should be really be called 'PS 6 Style Application Gimmicktry'. This is not a 5 star book. There are so many great photoshop books available that it would be best to get another one with more insight and less gimmicks. Generally the magic books are a good series, but this one's an exception.

5 out of 5 stars What I was looking for.......2001-08-29

I am teaching a high school course in web programming. The course will cover HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and web graphics. The ideal book on Photoshop for this class would: 1. be focused on Web graphics (Photoshop is not just a web tool, and other books spend a lot of time on other aspects). 2. be clear, with bite-sized examples and step by step instructions 3. include as topics creating background graphics, animation, and image map rollovers 4. be inexpensive Well, three out of four is not bad. Photoshop 6 Web Magic is too expensive to require students to buy it. Otherwise, it is what I was looking for. The price of the book probably is due to the high cost of color reproduction. If your idea of a book is large quantities of verbiage, then you will feel very cheated here. But for my needs, less is more. I can use the examples in this book to give students a sense of accomplishment. This should be better for them than a comprehensive treatise that is less accessible. Should you buy this book? My guess is that you will like it more to the extent that: --you prefer learning from examples to learning from theory --you prefer a book that is organized around particular problems or projects to one that is organized around the features of the software --you really want to focus on the Web aspects of Photoshop 6.0 I fit that profile, and I am pleased with the book.
