The "New Look" Batman.......2004-09-07

This collection contains the first issues of the re-invented Batman of the early sixties, a brief period in the Batman mythos between the "science fiction" oriented Batman of the 50's and the all too soon camp craze brought on by the TV version.

Visually, the changes were minor - a large yellow oval appeared around Batman's trademark bat symbol on his chest (making an excellent target, btw, but I digress...). The Batmobile became the familiar sleek model, the Bat Cave took on it's modern look with the Bat-poles and the exit in the side of a hill, etc.

But the greatest change was the first real attempt to return Batman to his roots, as the Worldest Greatest Detective. Gone (more or lees) were the adventures with monsters and aliens more suited for Superman. Instead, the emphasis was on stories that revolved around Batman's invsetigative and deductive skills. Colorful criminals with exotic names and motifs were given less weight while clever felons committing baffling crimes were the new staple.

Now these tales reprinted here are not the "grim and gritty" Dark Knight of current years. Not an angst-filled panel in the book. But they still are fun and nostalgic slices of the Batman legend. Especially for those of us who first read these 4 color wonders as children.

Excellent Batman classics.......2003-06-20

I'm not certain why DC decided to jump ahead in its Batman Archives from Golden Age to Silver Age, creating fourth Batman series, in addition to "Batman Archives" (covering Golden Age Batman stories from "Detective Comics", Batman's original title), "Batman: the Dark Knight Archives" (collecting the Golden Age "Batman" series), and "Batman: the World's Finest Comics" (covering the Golden Age stories in "World's Finest"). This volume differs in that it collects stories starting in 1963 (jumping from Batman vol 5 which ends in 1947), and it features a mix of issues of "Batman" and "Detective Comics".

I suspect this decision stems from the nature of the stories in "Dynamic Duo". This was a "break-point" in the Batman mythos. While Batman had been a hit from the minute he appeared in 1939, in the fifties, do to (in retrospect) poor editorial decisions prodded by the anti-comics hoopla of the time, Batman had become pretty watered down. While there was some goofiness in the early going, most of Batman's stories were pretty grim and violent, with Batman battling thieves, thugs, and murderers.

But in the fifties, Batman and Robin ran around in daylight, battling such menaces as the Beast from 19 feet below the sea etc. The mystery was taken out, and Ace the Bat-hound was put in.

This approach had worked quite well with Superman. By all accounts, it failed miserably with Batman. Thus, by the early sixties, Batman was on the verge of cancellation. Enter Julius Schwartz and company, who'd dones an excellent job of re-animating many of DC's stable of heroes. And the first order of business was to make Batman a detective again. And they succeeded admirably.

Now, not every story in this collection is a gem. Nor did they completely return Batman to his dark roots. At least one giant sci-fi monster makes an appearance, and the Joker, the only major villain to appear, is still a little more goofy than homicidal. But, having read some of the fifties silliness, these stories are a vast improvement.

Perhaps the most important change to the status quo is the death of Alfred the butler, killed while saving the Dynamic Duo. This story, while touching, and showing that the new team meant business, also is problematic, as our heroes are given about a page to grieve the loss of this important character.

Whatever the reasons DC decided to bring out this edition earlier than expected, I am glad that they did. The stories have a great exuberence and a certain level of depth (not a huge amount, but it's there) of character and plot development not found in the Golden Age stuff. Heck even the big monster story, "The Man Who Quit the Human Race", about a scientist who evolves several millenia physically and mentally, is great fun, and still involves Batman and Robin using they're detective skills to defeat the monster.

Another favorite story, along with Alfred's death and the evolving man, is the "Two-way Deathtrap", in which Bruce Wayne has a recurring nightmare about being trapped in water, surrounded by smooth walls, and guns on each side, a trap he cannot escape. When a gang of crooks discovers this dream they immediately put the trap together. Batman falls into it. Naturally, he escapes, but just how he escapes is the key to the success of this story.

In conclusion, I can't recommend this collection too enthusiastically. It's a real treat for Batman fans, comic fans, and pop culture fans. Be sure to pick it up, and hopefully, DC will continue this series for the foreseeable future. And not to worry Golden Age fans; "Batman: Dark Knight Archives" vol 4 is scheduled to hit comic stores later in July. Now, if they'd only star collecting the Batman team-up stories from "The Brave and the Bold" . . .

If you want to read the original comics be prepared to fork out thousands of $$$ or buy them here. These are classic and a must have for anyone who wants to see Batman in the Golden Age.

Amazing piece of writing.......2004-05-18

I usually don't read Sci-Fiction, but this book caught my eye at the library, so I decided to give it a try, and I am so happy that I did. This story takes place in the same universe as the Star of the Gaurdians series (good series, but not as interesting as the Mag Force 7 series). This is a great book with a whole host of crazy characters, and more plot twists than a mystery novel. It follows the story of Xris, an ex-Federal agent who was betrayed by his own partner. He is now a cyborg, and the leader of a mercenary group called Mag Force 7. This adventure takes you all over the universe and introduces you to a whole bunch of interesting characters (Raoul and the Little One being the most interesting). This is a must have for any Sci-fi/Fantasy reader

Oh Well..........2003-07-16

I happened upon this book which one of my children brought home this Spring. Is it readable? Yes, but I found the writing style awkward and somewhat confusing. The Characters and plot devices were original, but shallow. Call me a geek, but I would have liked more information on how and why a nano-machine would explode and why only one individual in the galaxy possessed this apparently useful innovation than listen to our hero lament the loss of his wife, his best bud, and various body parts. Read it if the book falls in your lap, but don't expect Heinlein.

Mag Force 7 wins!.......2000-05-18

The Knights of Black Earth, takes you back to the Universe of the "Star of the Guardians" series also by Hickman. This novel focuses on Xris, the part man, part robot mercenary. Xris has formed a new mercenary group called Mag Force 7. Also found in this group are the Loti Raoul, and the engimatic Little One.

Xris has found his long lost partner back in the days when he was a federal agent. Xris has a few questions for his partner regarding his last failed mission as a federal agent. However, to get to this partner will be deadly, and cause total chaos to the universe!

First of all, I agree with other reviewer's assertions that this is not a book for beginners. Without a basic understanding of foundational Buddhist thought and Buddhist cosmology, this book wouldn't make much sense. Vimalakirti is one of my favorite characters since he is a great example of how a lay person can achieve Buddhahood. He could enter gambling halls and other dens of iniquity, engage in business and family life, and still remain unsullied as he taught the Dharma. This book is one of the few readable texts about him. Although very well translated, it still retains some of the repetition and obscure references found in any ancient Buddhist work having a basis in an oral tradition. If you have an intermediate knowledge of Buddhism, this is an excellent work.

A flawless translation of a magnificent sutra.......2006-10-14

The Vimalakirti-nirdesha Sutra, though almost certainly not spoken by Shakyamuni Buddha himself, is nontheless held in the highest esteem by all schools of the Mahayana. It belongs to the category of sutras which are, in all probability, fictional creations of Mahayana scholars, and not expounded by the Buddha. Despite this, the Vimalakirti Scripture is still given the title of a sutra. For the doctrine it expounds is in perfect conformity with the highest teachings of the Buddha, and, more than any other sutra, the Vimalakirti Sutra shows the perfection of the bodhisattva ideal for laymen and women. Robert A.F. Thurman's translation of this masterpiece is close to perfect. Working from a Tantric perspective (being himself a Vajrayana Buddhist), Thurman details, in his notes and introduction, the clear relation between Buddhist Tantrism and the Vimalakirti sutra, which can lead one to the conclusion that its composition was largely influenced by the esoteric teachings of the Tantras. Yet, the teachings of the Vimalakirti Sutra are in no way exclusive to students of the Vajrayana, or of Tibetan Buddhism in general. This scripture has historically been of tremendous influence on Chinese Buddhism, and is the subject of some of the greatest works of Chinese Buddhist Art. It is also held in the highest esteem by Zen Buddhism for its emphasis on the practice of the layman amongst the cares of the world. Indeed, it is one of the few canonical scriptures that are of particular value to Zen. The scripture tells the story of the layman Vimalakirti (almost certainly a fictional character), a bodhisattva of the highest order, on par with such figures as Manjushri, who, in order to develop living beings, lives as a layman in the crowded metropolis of Vaishali, participating in business and government and teaching the dharma in accordance with conditions. On this occasion, Vimalakirti manifests himself as being sick, in order to develop beings who come to inquire after his health. The Buddha, desiring to know how Vimalakirti is doing, requests several students and bodhisattvas to go and visit him, all of whom decline, however, saying that their skill in the dharma cannot be matched with Vimalakirti. Finally, Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom, goes to the house of Vimalakirti along with a retinue of several hundred disciples. The vast majority of the scripture is composed of the dialogues that occur between Vimalakirti and Manjushri, as well as with the disciples and bodhisattvas. Finally, the entire retinue (Vimalakirti included) return to the Buddha, who delivers a final section to the discourse. Many famous incidents in Buddhist lore occur in this sutra: the exchange between Shariputra and the Goddess, the chapter concerning the Dharma Gate of Nonduality, Vimalakirti's explanation of the cause of his sickness, etc. To any Buddhist practitioner, particularly those of Vajrayana Buddhism and Zen, this sutra is of the utmost importance. The only two major translations available in English are those of Thurman and Burton Watson. Thurman's translation, however, is the better of the two, rendering in clear, poetic English the difficult doctrines of the Mahayana. His notes provide excellent insight into the historical relations of the Sutra, and its importance to Tibetan Buddhism, as well as to Chinese Buddhism. Highly, highly recommended.

This and the Flower Ornament Scripture will keep you busy for awhile. Not easy or light reading by any means.

Simply my favorite Buddhist text.......2005-04-16

I agree with many of the other reviewers in this space. This sutra is quite simply my favorite Buddhist text, and Prof Thurman's translation is my favorite translation. I travel with this book because it is so compact and precise in describing the way of the Bodhisattva, the great vehicle of the Mahayana path. I have heard Prof Thurman read from his book, and his transmission is no small contribution to the progress of Buddhism in the West.

Several reviewers have mentioned the humor. I have fond memories of reading this text out loud to my fellow dharma students, and having a good laugh each time a disciple sheepishly declines Lord Buddha's invitation to go visit the ailing bodhisattva, Vilmalakirti. The replies of Vimalakirti, on the other hand, are the highest wisdom I know of in Buddhism, and reflecting on them is a great treasure.

A brilliant sutra...........2000-08-12

This is the Vimilikirtisastra, a Mahayana treatise that deals with nonduality. What this means is that the construct of the Therevada (or Hinayana-- meaning devotional Buddhism) is replaced by something other-- larger-- (from Sanskrit little vehicle to larger vehicle).

What does this mean to you? You have a book here in which all of the paired items (good/bad, monk/layperson, holy/inholy) start to be broken down. Buddhism becomes 'purer' through being less pure, more people are offered the ability to have salvation...

More than that, this is a fun read that can be gone through multiple times-- which will be necessary if you want to fully grasp all that this book says. It will alter your conception of what the Dharma is, or introduce you to one if you're just beginning to learn about it.

I would suggest, though, that you have some background in the Therevada stuff before you start-- otherwise this book would kind of be pointless: excepting that parts of it are amusing. Prof. Thurman has a knack for translation...

Fun Vintage Towels!.......2006-12-08

What a cool and fun book! I love vintage towels and this book shows hundreds of pictures of them. Just about every design you can think of is printed on these towels, including Black Americana, children, desserts, floral, gardening, spirits and lots more, all from the 1930's through 1960's. Excellent information on the history of the companies that made these towels plus information on textile artists. Interesting to read glossary and a chapter on how to launder vintage linens. Also shows wonderful old catalog and magazine advertisements for these towels including their original descriptions and prices which I loved reading. Also recommended "Fun Linens & Handkerchiefs" by Scofield & Zalamea.

Put Some "Fun" and "Color" in Your Collection.......2003-10-14

The author of this latest collectible guide, Belinda Euans, did an outstanding job putting this book together. Collectibles are a work of art and knowing as much history as possible makes them even more special. I was delighted to find that this book not only contains beautiful, colorful pictures of these special, whimsical, and unique collectibles, it also includes a comprehensive section including the history of the Miyawo Company and distributors. I especially enjoyed the photographs of the Miyajima family, WWII, and the factory then and now. Ever wonder why so many ceramic items were produced after the war and how Japanese manufacturers and United States buyers conducted business? Answers to these questions and others can be found in this reference book.

This new, professional guide is very easy to follow. Pictured page after page are a wide variety of treasures from salt and pepper shakers, planters, teapots, wall pockets, vases, plates and more. It will likely keep a reader interested from start to finish and could even leave some collectors desiring more because it's so much fun to look at. I was amazed and surprised to see many items I never knew existed before. I believe many of them cannot be found in any other books on the market and are pictured here for the first time.

I feel collectors and admirers of ceramic kitchen collectibles will wish to add this reference and value guide to their library. I plan on purchasing multiple copies for Christmas presents. Thank you, Belinda, for your efforts and dedication in obtaining this information for interested fellow collectors.

Long Overdue Guide.......2003-09-30

What a wonderful guide for PY collectors. I am a Rooster and Roses collector and have searched for information on different pieces and their values, but to no avail until the PY/Miyao Fun Kitchen Collectibles Reference & Value Guide was published. I always wondered about the history of the pattern. The book even peeked my interest in the anthropomorphic line of PY. Belinda Euans not only captured my interest with the beautiful photos and the pricing guide, but answered all my questions regarding the origin of the pattern and history of the company. Kudos for a job well done. I recommend this book to anyone with any interest in the PY, UCAGCO, Early Provincial line.

A collector's dream come true.......2003-09-28

Belinda has done a fabulous job cataloging and pricing my favorite collectible, Roosters and Roses. The color photographs of the various items are beautiful and really show off the pieces wonderfully. I don't collect any other PY items but I found the rest of the book delightful with the whimsical photos and wealth of information. Hats off to Belinda! My husband and I now have new Roosters and Roses "horizons" to conquer thanks to her.

This is an excellent book. It is a great book for collectors of Rooster & Roses, Fruit Faces, Veggie People, & Flower Girls. It is very interesting & quite knowledgeable for both old & new collectors. High fives to Mrs Euans for a terrific book. We will be looking for more of the same in the near future.

Carlos Castaneda burst onto the academic and cultural scene in 1968 when he published the first of four books detailing his supposed apprenticeship with a Yaqui Indian sorcerer named Don Juan. While academic critics contend Castaneda invented Don Juan, believers say the fog surrounding his existence express the very ideals that Castaneda attributed to his apprenticeship.

A Magical Journey with Carlos Castaneda reads partly like a love story, partly like a tell-all account of a celebrity writer. Margaret Castaneda concentrates on the years leading up to her marriage in 1960. It was then Margaret and Carlos explored many of the ideas from controlling dreams to using hallucinogenic mushrooms that he claims to have arned from Don Juan.

Nevertheless, Margaret Castenada believes her husband was indeed a sorcerer, and she still loves him. She insists Castaneda's academic critics miss the point. "I'm willing to accept Don Juan as a spiritual teacher, and it really doesn't matter if he's not real." But the role she claims in developing the ideas Carlos purports to be Don Juan's ought to be recognized, she says, so she wrote this book.

INTERESTING READING........2007-07-02

If you are a Castaneda fan, you got to read this book. Despite the bad editing/grammar, it was still very intereting to read. Margaret gives you an insight into Carlos' early days back in the mid 50's all the way through the 90's. I enjoyed reading about all the people that had an impact on Carlos' life from family and friends to anthropologists, professors, authors, visionaries, and don Juan. The content of the book appears to have been written with all honesty.

Fascinating biography.......2003-09-16

Margaret Runyan's book is a fascinating biography of a mystery man. I have read and loved almost all of Castaneda's work, but knew little in the way of factual events that led to his success as one of twentieth century's greatest writers. This is an interesting viewpoint; we can see what his fequent abscenses did to his family.
In it we see the portrait of a talented and ambitious man in search of truth and in search of a way to distinguish himself from the mediocrity of academic life.
We see the love he had for his adopted son "Chocho", and his wistful and sad realization that he did not have the time to be a good father to him. There were other things: i.e.going to the desert to see his "informant". At the beginning, it might have been an ambitious move calculated to distinquish his career, but as time went on it became an obsession to know the truth.

The reason I rated this book 2 stars is because of the amazing number of typographical and grammatical errors in it. It makes one think, didn't she have an editor, and what kind of publisher would let all these mistakes get in??!!

However, the book is an easy read and hard to put down if you are a Castaneda fan.It sheds light on many details unknown before.It should also be a good thing for detractors of Castaneda to read, because it shows the man's integrity in so many ways, in spite of his unwillingness to stand by certain facts (i.e. his lies about his birthplace/time etc.) He really did want to 'erase his personal history' much before he met Don Juan. She tells us about his early influences (including herself)and the events and people that led him to his famous path. Although there are some inconsistencies in her interpretation of who he was,she generally has a down-to-earth viewpoint, and presents him in all his contradictions yet as a good human being who cared but was unable to perform his family duties, in other words was a flaky husband and father.

Another way to tarnish Castaneda's contributions.......2002-12-11

The book seemed another way to make money by a relative of a famous person, although Castaneda never intended to be famous. He rarely interviewd (I have read only one interview), no pictures taken from him, and never advertised a new philosophy or painted himself as a new "guru" or anything of that sort. Besides, living with a person for some time does not make one expert about than person. To know Castaneda deeply, read the original works.

glad this was written.......2001-07-17

Contrary to what some other glassy-eyed true believers in the don Juan myth seem to think, this book is not at all exploitative or particularly gossipy; it is merely a simple, anecdote-driven, descriptively written biographical account of, hands down, the greatest novelist of the 20th century--Carlos Castaneda. No other book that I am aware of contains so much information on the man or such insight into his personality, which turns out, not surprisingly, to be inherently secretive and almost pathologically deceptive. Thank goodness this woman chose to write; there is little enough truth in print regarding this type of thing in general and Castaneda in particular.

We are not even sure if this book is "truth" or not.

If you are looking to Navigate Infinity, you WILL NOT find it in this book. Yet if the 'groupie' in you has to have Carlos "dirt", well ... read on.
