Book Description

"Pile them up, a Marlon James character says repeatedly, and Marlon does just that. Pile them up: language, imagery, technique, imagination. All fresh, all exciting. This is a writer to watch out for."-Chris Abani, author of GraceLand, winner of the Hemingway/PEN Award

"This is the finest and most important first novel I've read in years. James's writing brings to mind early Toni Morrison, Jessica Hagedorn, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez."-Kaylie Jones, author of Speak Now and A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries

"Marlon James spins his magical web in this novel and we willingly suspend disbelief, rewarded by the window he opens to Jamaica (and a world) rarely portrayed in fiction."-Elizabeth Nunez, author of Bruised Hibiscus, winner of the American Book Award

This stunning debut novel tells the story of a biblical struggle in a remote Jamaican village in 1957. With language as taut as classic works by Cormac McCarthy, and a richness reminiscent of early Toni Morrison, Marlon James reveals his unique narrative command that will firmly establish his place as one of today's freshest, most talented young writers.

In the village of Gibbeah--where certain women fly and certain men protect secrets with their lives--magic coexists with religion, and good and evil are never as they seem. In this town, a battle is fought between two men of God. The story begins when a drunkard named Hector Bligh (the "Rum Preacher") is dragged from his pulpit by a man calling himself "Apostle" York. Handsome and brash, York demands a fire-and-brimstone church, but sets in motion a phenomenal and deadly struggle for the soul of Gibbeah itself. John Crow's Devil is a novel about religious mania, redemption, sexual obsession, and the eternal struggle inside all of us between the righteous and the wicked.

5 out of 5 stars John Crow's Devil.......2007-01-09

Wow. I truly enjoyed reading this book. I found it well written and it carried me from beginning to end without a hitch. It was quite a ride! I did find myself reading out loud quite a bit - pronouncing the lingo/slang/pidgen words aloud so I could try to understand or hear what they sounded like or meant. Some words I looked up in on-line dictionaries as I wasn't sure exactly what they meant. (woe to us Pacific Northwest folks...) I can easily imagine this book as a movie - the characters were (and still are) very vivid in my minds eye as I read through it.

4 out of 5 stars Blood and Redemption.......2006-02-12

This story about the struggle for the soul of a small Jamaican village evokes the dreamlike particularity of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the driving inevitability of Faulkner's major novels. But the voice is unique to Marlon James, and it's the voice, rather the many voices, ranging from poor folk patois to high flown hermeneutics, that make this novel special.

Hector Bligh, the Rum Preacher, presides over the pulpit of the village's Christian Church. Bligh, lost in fog of guilt and alcohol, is a barely credible messenger of God. During service one Sunday, a stranger bursts into the church and physically tosses Bligh out into the street. The stranger, Apostle York, tells the congregation he's been sent to put the village back on a proper spiritual path. Over time, the sacrifices York asks from the faithful get greater, and the price for disobedience rises sharply. Pastor Bligh sinks to the depths, but he's given a hand up by the Widow Greenfield, and eventually finds the will to struggle back. Sober, connected again to spiritual power from multiple sources, he's ready to fight to reclaim his church.

James flits in and out of a lot of minds. He's particularly good with the main female character, Lucinda, who's caught between love of God and lust for Apostle York, between the spiritual light of day and the darkness of obeah magic. And we care for the Widow Greenfield, who can't keep compassion from seeping into her sealed-off heart. A rarely seen technique is the way James uses the collective voice of the village as a kind of Greek chorus that comments on the struggle between the Pastor and the Apostle. This voice is fearful, ignorant, credulous - prime fodder for York's emerging cult.

The book contains many graphic scenes. Fluids from many bodies gush, flow, spurt. The language is raw; neither the reader's nor the characters' feelings get spared. But all of it is in service to the plot: the battle between the Pastor and the Apostle comes to a climax; Lucinda's internal struggles get resolved; and we learn why York showed up at this particular dusty country crossroad in the first place.

This is a powerful novel. The writing is strong and original. The shifts in setting and point of view are handled with aplomb. Even more impressive, it's James' fiction debut. He's a writer to watch.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Revealing Look At Mid-20th-Century Jamaica........2005-12-27

This novel depicts, with very gory and startling detail, the true life of Protestant, Pentecostalist, small-town, country people in mid-20th-century Jamaica, who are completely caught up between misguided perceptions of what is good and evil and the plague of superstition and mysticism. As was mentioned before: if you enjoy Toni Morrison, you will enjoy this read. If you have no clue as to the ins and outs of Jamaica's overly "Christian" culture and the captivating politics of beauty and race on this island-nation, then this book will serve, as was mentioned in other reviews, as a frightening, yet quite real, introduction.

This book is nothing like anything I expected. It is very well written. I am amazed that this is a new author.

Book Description

In Nineteen fifty-five a Shadow Government was established by Executive Orders, and operated covertly with success for twenty years during the very warm Cold War. Then under pressure from Congress in Nineteen Seventy-five, new Executive Orders were issued to make the Shadow Government, with its Black Chamber operations, vanish. This secret operation remained nonexistent history until exposed in Two thousand and three. This is a story about sixteen naïve young people. Upon graduating from high school on one Memorial Day, they enlisted and became highly trained and qualified Master Assassins by the following Memorial Day. They were recruited to be deadly tools of the trade for a “One Nation under God” Shadow Government. The young people were displacement specialists for dispatching humanities hemorrhoids from the “nasty now and now” into the “sweet bye and bye.” They helped balance out the political “World Order” of things, and the valuable economic benefits of the U. S. of A. around the world.

Beyond the first few chapters this was an exciting and spellbinding book that I couldn't put down. There are lots of intriquing twists & turns about events that happened in my lifetime...very interesting....is this fact or fiction or some of both?

4 out of 5 stars Shadows Skulls Spooks -- two books.......2007-05-23

Shadows, Skulls, and Spooks is a two-book fascinating tale of 16 talented young men recruited into a secret Shadow Government operation -- the Pooka Brigade -- trained to be efficient killers and then assigned to kill to protect our Country's regional, political, and economic interests. Half of the first Brigade survived and the best of them went on to assemble another Pooka Brigade (covered in Book II).

Established and, 20 years later, terminated by Executive Orders, their Black Chamber units functioned in extreme secrecy. You will feel the tension and intrigue as they carry out their unbelievable assignments.

1 out of 5 stars Elminster makes this book too annoying to read.......2004-04-12

Usually I'm unwholesomely addicted to pulp fantasy novels, but I couldn't stand to read this one. Elminster has to be one of the genre's most annoying characters. It took me more than 1000 pages before I started to hate Drizzit, but only a few dozen for Elminster. In Greenwood's world the most powerful person on Faerun is always cracking bad jokes, winking at his companions, and observing how funny he is. The people around "El" are continually groaning and sighing. The novel ends up reading like an unfunny episode of Cheers (the sitcom): cloying atmosphere combined with the impossibility of character development.

If you enjoy reading about world-changing events, check out some of the Cyric stories, like _Crucible_ by Troy Denning. Otherwise check out some good FR books by Elaine Cunningham and Paul Kemp.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad, but not as good as usual........2000-07-27

Don't mistake with the title. I really enjoy reading this book, but it isn't as good as others Greenwood novels. The plot is great, and it keep you reading the book. It plays with an ancient race that is no longer on Faerun, but in other "dimension", and that gives more interest on the book. The treath that they made is very dangerous to Fareun, but Elminster could easilly kill all of them. Thus, Greenwood keep him busy, with the Times of Troubles, the Zentharim, Mystra and all of that. Then, the responsability to save Faerun from the Maulagrym lies in others foes, that make it good :). I enjoy really this book, and it's worth to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Enter the Maulagrym.......1999-12-21

"The Great Foe", a name that sent shudders down the amorphous spines of the shadowmasters, an odd clan of shapeshifting sorcerers living in the demi-plane of Shadows. Such was the name given to Elminster of Shadowdale. Greenwood returns in the sequel to "Shadows of Doom", and the fifth in the line of novels dealing with the Godswar, also called the Avatar Crisis. Ed's humor is once again a huge part in this novel, as is the setting of the stage for the Maulagrym to steal into the magic depleated realms and wreak havok en route to total domination. Ithar, Belkram Sharantyr, along with the ghost of Sylune must battle the horrid creatures, or all Fearun will be lost. Over all a solid book, the best way I can place it is, Entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Superb Series; into the World Of Elminister.......1998-06-19

Greenwod pulls you into the world of Faerun. If you like the mystic side of fantasy; this is a series for you. Other favs: Salvatore's : Crimson Shadow Series, Drow Series.

5 out of 5 stars Great middle book of a trilogy.......2002-09-11

It's great that this long out of print book and its mate ANTARES DAWN are again available. An exciting, hard science adventure story set against the backdrop of interstellar war. Mr. McCollum's characters are a bit wooden sometimes, but the story moves along, the alien menace feels real, the puzzles are puzzling and the revelation at the end is a clever one, leading into the last book of the trilogy. The good news is that that book is at last available. I read ANTARES VICTORY, published by scifi-az.com, and it is a very satisfying conclusion to the series. I hope the books become more widely available because they are quite enjoyable.

Another book I couldn't put down. Not quite as much action as the previous book, but still plenty of things happening, and definately still very interesting. I'm fast becoming a big fan of Mr McCollum!

I have read most of Lynn Andrews books (I started with Medicine Woman) and even though her first experiences and journeys were quite fascinating, this particular narration explains much more about female spirituality and what a woman can give to herself and those around her. Through Andrews different experiences in the Australian aboriginal landscape (they are many), we see that once you start on your spiritual quest, you receive/acquire more and more gifts that are directly related to your spiritual courage. "Crystal Woman" truly moved me - and I've been into New Age studies since for the past twenty years!

When i first picked up this book it was by accident, but the title intrigued me so I checked it out. Boy I was in for a surprise! As I read this book I was amazed at how much power that a female possesses inside of herself. I was so into this book I read it in 2 days. After this first book I was hooked on all the rest of her books. The thing that got me the most was that these books were based on her real life experiences. From then on I have been trying to find my spirituality, this and the other books has inspired me

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cajun cookbooks.......2004-03-10

This book contains wonderful stories as well as recipes from those cajun ladies in south Louisiana. The recipes are usually quick and easy to make, your company will think you spent the entire day in the kitchen. I have found many of these recipes are great for entertaining either large or small groups. Some of my favorite recipes are Crawfish Fettuchine, Aunt Doodie's Chocolat Cake and Cherrie Bounce. If you have tried the other two Jr. League of Lafayette cookbooks you will truely fine this book continues the tradition of fine southern Louisiana cooking.

5 out of 5 stars A great cookbook for families on the go.......2004-03-09

I love this book for it's easy, delicious recipes and wonderful stories about life in Southern Louisiana. Many of these recipes have become family favorites at our house. The recipes use fewer ingredients and most recipes are quick and easy for those of us without a lot of time.

3 out of 5 stars There are better Cajun Cookbooks available.......2001-09-17

                            First: the positive-
The drawings in this book are wonderful. They are very true to life (at least for the part of Louisiana my husband comes from.)
The stories are the reason I bought this book. There is a lot of information regarding the culture and traditions of the Acadians and the lifestyle of Southern LA. The recipes are good.

                            Second: the needs work part-
These recipes were gathered together from a group of people. Because of this, many of the recipes are not typically cajun recipes. For example, there are many pasta recipes which have nothing to do with Cajun cooking. If you are looking for a cookbook with traditional Louisiana cooking try Talk about Good.

However, if you collect cookbooks and want to add an interesting cookbook to your collection, this is the one. Just realize that you will find many recipes in this book that are already in other cookbooks. If you are interested in reading about Louisiana and want some traditional recipes, this is a good book to get. Just realize that there will many non-Louisiana recipes included in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good Only as a Supplement.......2000-12-09

This book can't really stand on its own, but is a good supplement to Talk About Good I and II. The artwork is great the stories by Sonnier are delightfully nostalgic. I found the text, however, to be unorganized and the recipes seemed to be reminiscent of ones that could be found on the back of a Campbell's Soup can. As a transplanted Cajun living away from Louisiana, I always refer to T.A.G. I and II and use them religiously and only refer to Tell Me More if I want a variation on a recipe that I already know.

Are you a crocheter, knitter or needle worker with skeins of leftover yarn from all the projects you have created in the past? Do you hate to throw the leftovers out but don't know what to do with them? Then grab BEST OF DICK MARTIN, several sheets of plastic canvas, a plastic canvas needle and set to work on creating useful items for your home or something you can make up quickly for a gift.

Dick Martin has put together over 50 of his creations in plastic canvas. Some of these can be made in less than an evening. The items range from things for babies, children and even adults. Ever want to give your child's special teacher a present but want it to be something unique? There is an "apple" to give her/him but this one won't spoil. It is a pencil holder! You can also send your child to school with a very special lunch box.

Expecting a new baby or know someone who is? There is a very masculine desk set for Dad, bookmarks for Mom and even a photo frame for a wedding or a small item gift box for the wedding party.

If you have very little money, little time, little or no decorating talent, and the desire to make your apartment look great, this book is for you! This is the first decorating book I picked up where ALL of the ideas in this book are paractical.

How to Decorate helped me establish a budget and "scheme" for apartment. Following the author's guidelines will help you do the same. So when you go shopping for instance, you will not impulse buy and end up with furniture you don't really want.

The author also makes great suggestions on discount shopping stores, space and style consideration, cheapo ways to change the look of furniture, and how to "size up an apartment" during your initial apartment hunting period.

If your shopping/moving budget is $500 or less, this book is a must have!!

This book is for those of us with little money, little time and very little or no decorating skills/creativity. If you are moving into an apartment (like me) and have a desire to create a pleasant living space, this book is definetly for you.

I like the book because it is very practical and it helped me focus on what I wanted my apartment to look like. It helped me establish a budget and a "look" for the apartment, so now, when I go shopping, I know exactly how much I have to spend, what I need and whether or not something will match or look good, etc.

The author also gives tips on where to find stuff on at a discounted rate and her sample budgets made me remember to buy the little stuff you tend to forget about, like a small trash can for the kitchen.

The best part about all of this is that the entire process, budgeting and creating a scheme only took a few hours to create.

Take the previous review with a grain of salt- the woman advertises this book on her interior decorating web site and most probably gets a percentage from each sale. She has the same review, word for word, on her web site.

I haven't read the book, so I can't rate it, but I thought those who would be influenced to buy the book based on reading that review should know that the reviewer is not simply "a reader", but someone who may stand to profit if the book sells.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with ideas for every budget and taste.......1999-10-20

This is a wonderful little book that's packed with great ideas that won't break your budget. The authors suggest using what you have and list good places to find bargains. But they also help you re-think a room and get clear on your tastes before you start. Unlike most decorating magazines and books, this one doesn't leave you feeling poor and envious - it cheers you on and encourages you, even if you have very little money to spend.

BTW, I have no connection to these authors - perhaps the authors put my review on their website. I haven't been to the site.

                                        Book Description

As its point of departure,Funny Cuts takes, as its point of departure, Pop Art's revolutionary referencing of comics and concludes with the most current trends in contemporary art, reflecting in many diverse ways its dialogue with the commercial and trivial picture worlds of comics and cartoons. Pop Art artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein were ground-breaking in their provocative confrontation with high and low art using motifs and references from popular comics. In the 1970s, American comics dealt with taboo subjects like sexuality and violence--here, for the first time, the subversive potential and the psychological content of comic worlds were used creatively in in fine art. Within the context of the punk movement, Raymond Pettibon and Mike Kelley were inspired by comics through wall-length drawings that made use of the narrative element of comics on the border between visual art and literature. And internationally today, artists question political and social realities and their own identity through the mythological potential of comics and animations. Presented here are numerous images from roughly 100 artists that visually demonstrate the various ways in which comics have become a form of high art.

"I am merely using that which is available to describe that which is experienced."-Julian Opie

Perhaps more than any artist of his generation, Julian Opie (b. 1958) has taken his art beyond the gallery walls and out into the mainstream of cultural life, testing his ideas in a multitude of different mediums. This is the first publication to offer a complete and highly illustrated survey of his career and work: from the early figurative painted metal sculptures, through 3-D evocations of European highway travel and urban high-rise buildings, to his recent cool graphic style, which has been seen on billboards and in large-scale site-specific wall paintings.

Mary Horlock's text explores the way Opie's unique, trademark visual vocabulary has developed, and her interview with him reveals much about the motivation and vision of this most individual of artists at an important point in his career.

                                            Book Description

Description: "What I would really like to do is make a painting and then walk into it," says British-born artist, Julian Opie. Opie has developed his images via the computer since the early 90s, yet reality has continued to remain his model. His objects of houses or automobiles--although reduced to their essential features and distinctly scaled down in size--are based on authentic buildings and cars. In this way, Opie transforms individual objects into universal signs. The inspiration for his repertoire of motifs, as well as his depictive style, he gets from life around him: public places, streets, airports, and shops, and also from a trip to Bali. In this publication, an essay by Opie himself gives first-hand insight into his artistic process, while a sequence of full-page illustrations, gives a comprehensive view of the different thematic facets in the artist's work.

                                              Book Description

Illustrated with approximately 235 color images and packaged with a DVD of selected videos, Animated Painting brings together some of the most compelling recent contemporary art to combine traditional conceptions of painting and drawing with the techniques and time-based elements of animation. As the moving image continues to overwhelm our visual field, artists are using the playful possibilities of time and movement to extend the languages of painting and drawing to literally "animate" them without completely releasing the work of art from the visual codes and conventions of the traditional two-dimensional art object. These artists often wrap their doubts and concerns about society into an aesthetically delightful package, claiming animation techniques for contemporary art, either wholly or as part of a hybrid artistic practice. Animated Painting features 14 international artists, including Sadie Benning, Jeremy Blake, William Kentridge and Julian Opie.

                                                    Book Description

In this age of globally connected information societies--of cell phones, email, home shopping, and the Internet--we retreat deeper and deeper within our own four walls. Yet--and perhaps, consequently--public urban spaces are becoming more and more important, having lost none of their significance as interfaces of human communication. Featured here are more than 30 artists who have developed their own personal visions, utopias, and fantasies of a life in and with the city, realized over 30 years of public projects for the city of Bremen. Included are works by Kim Adams, Louise Bourgeois, Olafur Eliasson, Isa Genzken, Hans Haacke, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Atelier van Lieshout, Olaf Nicolai, Julian Opie, Panamarenko, Marjetica Potrc, Tobias Rehberger, Thomas Ruff, Roman Signer, and Winter/Harbelt.

                                                        Book Description

From Jessica Stockholder's subversive meditation on the suburban home, to Chris Burden's quasi-legal "small skyscraper," to Barbara Bloom's dislocating architecture (unfeasible, save through future technologies), to Kevin Appel's ambivalent homage to modernism, Trespassing: Houses x Artists breaks through the conceptual boundaries that have historically divided art and architecture to describe new strategies of conceiving private space. In their individual collaborations with architects Alan Koch and Linda Taalman of OpenOffice, nine contemporary artists radically reinvent how domestic space is created and inhabited. The resulting works are open-ended, representing a rigorous new approach to visualizing form rather than a final product or conceptual destination.

                                                          Book Description

The ten years from the civil rights movement to the new age produced the greatest advance toward equality since the abolition of slavery and also brought defeat of the most massive war machine in human history, all this by peaceful protest! For the people profiled in THE SIXTIES, it was a bewildering spiritual search as police undercover agents agitated in favor of violent protests, while rich communists stonewalled to preserve the status quo. The black heroine overcomes female impotence. An atheist libertine transforms into a religious guru. Funny and miraculous!
