Having to read this book for a school assignment, I was pretty sure that I would not enjoy it. But surprisingly enough, I did. This is not only a romance novel, it is a true tale of suspense. And even though the main character does not make moral choices, you feel for her and understand why she makes those choices.

I was unsure how I would react to this book, having heard mixed reviews. Once started, it drew me in. It's a gripping tale of passion. A good deal of this novel is told in dreams and using stream of conciousness--so it is not light reading. However, piecing it together is well worth the effort. Join Elisabeth in her tale of despair, murder, and abandonment....

This book surprised the hell out of me. Sure it was slow at times, but no book has ever given me as many flashbacks of the Alan Moore classic of Watchmen. It's neat to see the JSA in their prime, even if it is an Elseworlds.
If You Don't Buy It, You are Dead to Me!.......2006-11-21
It is 1995 and I'd like you to imagine two things: 1) I was into the 11th straight month of wearing the same 1958 Pendleton flannel shirt, and 2) I was ready to quit reading comics. Despite the olfactory treat I must have presented, I insisted on going to my local shop. On that day I purchased The Golden Age, by James Robinson, Paul Smith and Richard Ory. The book focused on Johnny Quick, Green Lantern, Manhunter and the rest of DC's stable of crime-fighters in the waning days of the 1940's. The mix of action, mystery, paranoia, conflict and conspiracy made me a comics fan again. It reacquainted me with Paul Smith, co-producer of one of my favorite runs on Uncanny X-Men, and introduced me to writer James Robinson. Smith channels his inner Mac Raboy, golden age great Captain Marvel Jr. artist, presenting visuals that are classic and clear, while Robinson gives a gripping tale about the decline and fall of the first heroic age. It's got the best brawl in the past 25 years, and enough shocks to make you piddle in yer britches!
Fine Story, Faulty Battle Logic.......2006-11-02
The story opens with Green Lantern musing about how awesome his power is, surpassing the atomic bombs which later give Dynaman his power. Alas, he falls far short in battle. Managing only a single green bubble which Dynaman shatters with one blow, the vaunted "Big Guy" is immediately reduced to slugging it out with the villain. The mob of heroes flings itself at Dynaman one by one, rather than attempting any coordination or teamwork. No one attempts a ranged attack, but rather puts himself in range of Dynaman's devastating fists. Heroes who might credibly ignore Dynaman's physical strength, such as the Spectre, Dr. Fate, or Sargon the Sorcerer, are either absent or take no part in the battle. The whole battle is staged to support DC's conceit that someone with Superman-style powers is automatically superior to all others.
Aside from these issues, this is a most impressive work in every regard.
Brilliant reinvention.......2006-08-30
The so-called Golden Age of comics set a standard back in the 1940s. By today's standards, however ... well, they're a little hokey. Or they were until writer James Robinson got his hands on them. In this volume, Robinson gave the heroes of old their dignity back with a story of drama and intrigue that is anything but hokey.
The big war is over. The soldiers are returning heroes, and the "mystery men" -- masked vigilantes -- are forgotten in the celebration. After all, they stayed home during the war, didn't they? Well, not of their own volition ... they were ordered to stay home by the government, fearful that the death of even one high-profile hero would cripple morale. But a handful of heroes went overseas anyway, and one of them, Tex Thompson, a.k.a. Mr. America, a.k.a. the AmeriCommando, becomes an overnight public sensation and media darling. He's credited with single-handedly killing most of Germany's superheroes and supposedly offing Hitler himself. It seems only natural that, by the close of the 1940s, Thompson has been handed a Senate seat and is eyeing a run at the presidency.
Meanwhile, the rest of America's heroes have mostly slipped quietly into obscurity, giving up their costumes and powers to find normal lives. Some are happy, some bitter -- and some perhaps a bit mad.
But then Paul Kirk, the Manhunter, sneaks back into the country from parts unknown, pursued by confusing dreams and men with guns, wracked by paranoia and a fear he doesn't completely understand. Al "the Atom" Pratt, Johnny Thunder, Paula "Tigress" Brooks and the emotionless Robotman are recruited to join Thompson's new cadre of American superheroes. And Daniel Dunbar, the former sidekick Dyna-Mite, flunks out of Princeton ... just before receiving a similar offer from Thompson. Soon, Dunbar is unveiled as the new Dynaman, with powers scientifically enhanced to make him the most powerful being on the planet.
The plot thickens from here. The Manhunter regains his missing memories. A few heroes learn that Thompson isn't really the hero he's believed to be but, under the scrutiny of the anti-Communist backlash (a DC variation on McCarthyism), they're unable to come forward with their knowledge. And then they learn the truth about Dunbar....
"The Golden Age" is a story with an incredible number of interwoven subplots, but the reader never loses track of the individual threads. (Although it is slightly confusing that so many Golden Age heroes were named Johnny.) In the book's stunning climax, the simple courage of forgotten heroes like Miss America, the Tarantula, Captain Triumph and the rolypoly sidekick Fatman puts some of the modern superheroes to shame.
Robinson has crafted an amazing book, and Paul Smith's art gives Robinson's story the appropriate 1940s feel without sacrificing modern techniques. "The Golden Age" is an excellent package, a welcome reminder of what made comics a popular storytelling medium in the first place.

More Golden Age Than JSA.......2006-06-27
Despite the revamped cover featuring the current JSA comicbook series logo, it's more an All-Star Squadron tale (Roy Thomas' Golden Age equivalent to Justice League Unlimited) than it is a Justice Society of America story. Anyway, it's a pretty good story that could have served as a wrap-up for Roy Thomas' All-Star Squadron stories if it weren't for some bizarre alterations to the characters' histories that would have affected the DC Universe continuity had this been run as an "in-continuity" story instead of an Elseworlds story. The situations going on with the characters who are finding their post-World War II superhero careers winding down are certainly handled in an adult (if not entirely mature) way, with the puzzling mystery of Paul Kirk the Manhunter running from gunmen and suffering from bizarre dreams and amnesia threading its way throughout the whole story, plus Tex Thompson the Americommando's political aspirations and his turning Daniel Dunbar, the former Dan the Dyna-Mite, into the atomic age's "superman". Eventually the heroes put on their masks and capes once again for the final showdown as the truth of Tex Thompson and Daniel Dunbar is revealed. The story's artwork is excellent throughout, with certainly more detail in handling scenes that would have been too gruesome for the day and age of even the All-Star Squadron.

I'm sure that most of you reading this review know Martin from the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series and have probably decided to look into his more obscure work, and possibly to see his roots; if this is the case this book makes for a cheap way to do just that and an excellent one at that.
I should admit at this point that (sacrilege that it is) I haven't read the books currently out in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series; this book is my introduction to Martin's work. And I must say, what an introduction it is! This effectively shows his diversity and ability to write in different idioms and consistently come up with quality material. The primary focus in most of the reviews has been (understandably) on the title story "Sandkings"; however, while this is the best story the other material is all of very high quality, too. It runs the gauntlet from sci-fi, to horror, to fantasy and has some philosophical ideas laid down in the under current of a few of the stories. A few details on each of them will follow; however, each description will be short so as not to give away any plot details.
The Way of Cross and Dragon -- As someone mentioned earlier this story takes a searing look at religion. It's told through the eyes of a priest that's turning into a skeptic and manages to cover a lot of ground despite being only twenty-two pages long, possibly the second strongest story contained in the book despite the brevity of it (albeit, this is a volume of short stories...).
Bitterblooms -- A mysterious fantasy tale based around primitive tribes, or rather, a particular member from one of the tribes.
In The House of the Worm -- A chilling horror tale that manages to evoke a very claustrophobic atmosphere, it's set underground in a realm where humans live underground and worship a worm god.
Fast-Friend -- A wonderful sci-fi tale about two romantic dreamers that want to live among the stars that's actually rather moving. (Believe me; it's not anywhere near as cheesy or saccharine as it sounds) I would probably rank this story third.
The Stone City -- A mysterious piece of sci-fi that takes place on a planet outside the 'human' realm; the main character is a man trapped on the planet.
Starlady -- Another piece of sci-fi; this one is about a couple that land on a planet unknown to them and are trapped there.
Sandkings -- Much has been said about this already so I'll attempt to say even less than I have with the other stories: It's a very strong horror story designed to make you think (it's one of the aforementioned stories with philosophical undertones). I can only think of one flaw, which is that the main character is such a [...]that some of the potential horror is taken away from the story as you have a hard time caring what happens to him, however, the truly chilling ending makes up for this.
This book is out of print so you'll have to pick it up used. I managed to get mine for $1 in a used bookstore; however, I doubt any here will have such luck. It's worth the current asking price(s) to get it used, though, so I highly suggest grabbing a copy while you still can, if you do prepare to be terrified, mystified, saddened, and very pleased.

The thread running through Geore R. R. Martin's work is a powerful intuitive grasp of human weakness. Sandkings gives the reader the most direct look at the author's power through the medium of a lean, horrible, funny, and unforgettable short story.

... I thought the book was horrible. With th exception of the last 2 pages, the book was predictable, unnecessarily violent, repulsive, and basically a total turn off. Perhaps I'm missing something - but I don't think this short novel was worth my time. .
A sample of the versatility and imagination of GRRM.......2003-04-18
George R. R. Martin is not just one of the best fantasy or science fiction writers of our time, it is hard to pin him down into any genre. Some of the stories in this volume could better be described as horror rather than fantasy or science fiction.
Sandkings, the title story and easily the best of the lot falls into this category. Simon Kress, a rather unpleasant character, acquires as pets these exotic, quasi insect creatures comprised of a physically distinct body (with brain and alimentary functions) and a number of dispersed mobile units who serve as foragers and warriors. Picture an ant-nest or a beehive, except that the queen is of a vastly higher level of consciousness and intelligence and can command her mobiles to undertake more complex projects. Kress' selfishness and sadism wreak havoc on his pets till they transform from loyal subjects (almost disciples in a way) to something beyond scary. It is as if a people long oppressed finally turn on their master. This is just the bare outline, the story itself is compelling and left me gasping by the end (which I am not going to spoil for you - take my word that it is one of the most gripping finales you will read).
The other stories are shadowed by Sandkings but are excellent in themselves. I particularly liked The Way of Cross and Dragon, a searing look at religion and the religious hierarchy. Also Star Lady, a tale of the loss of innocence on a planet with no rule of law, and then in a way, a strange redemption as well.
The mood throughout the book is dark and this is not a book you want to read in a low mood. I strongly recommend it however as a superb example of storytelling and a sample of the versatility and imagination of George R. R. Martin.

It just arrived in the mail and I can hardly wait to carve another bird. This book gives the carver just what he needs--patterns from the front and side plus top and bottom views! Lots of black and white photos, but then you get color photos just when you need them--which is when you begin to paint the bird. Plus, I really like the way the birds look. If I can't produce a fine looking bird from this book it will not be from lack of direction. This beats just about any other bird carving book I have, and believe me I have bought a lot of them!

Rosalyn Daisey's book is a suberb example of how to author a "how to" book. It's top notch in patterns, instructions, and illistrations. You can't go wrong with any of her books. I'm impressed enough to own them all.

He brings life to his carvings by burning the feathers in with such detail nearly everyone reaches out to "pet" his birds. This past year he decided to go beyond the "natural" look and asked me to paint a robin so that the gift to our grandson would be from both of us.
I had only worked with watercolors previously and so, having had no experience with acrylic painting, I was still able to follow the instructions in this wonderful book and came out with a robin that looked very real. In fact, when painting one day, I had to answer the door and the guest flinched, thinking I was holding a real robin. Now if I can only come up with her instructions for painting a blue bird and/or a blue herron I would be grateful beyond words.

Useful book for ideas and patterns for bird carving........1999-02-18
Written by Roger Schroeder, this book is a summary of Ernest Muehlmatt's carving techniques that takes the reader through the steps of carving song birds using a power carver. Mr. Schroeder's writting style is difficult to get used to. He uses many un-necessary adjectives to describe the process of carving. Much of the first part of the book is devoted to reviewing Mr. Muehlmatt's personal opinions in bird carving. The reader gets a sense that Mr. Muehlmatt is quite egotistical. Nonetheless, the book does go over a few techniques useful to aquire for both carving and painting birds. Although geared toward people who use power carving tools, much of the information can be used for those who utilize knives and gouges. The second part of the book includes patterns of some common song birds and a pictorograph showing how each one was carved and painted. This turns out to be the most useful part of the book. Overall, readers will gain some knowledge of song bird carving and painting and a lot of insight into the thought process of Ernest Muehlmatt, albeit at the expense of sifting through the cumbersome writing sytle of Roger Schroeder.
